Sonore (Gustafsson/Vandermark/Brotzmann)Call Before You Dig – Loft/Koln ... CD
Okka Disk, 2009. New Copy 2CD ... $10.99 16.99
Three of the greatest saxophonists of the past few decades, teaming up here as a trio, and working at a level of sonic intensity that few other players could match! The set features Mats Gustafsson, Ken Vandermark, and Peter Brotzmann – all blowing tenor, plus a variety of other saxes – coming together without any other instrumentation, yet creating a world of sound beyond compare – very free and frenetic one minute, then spacious and textural the next – with sounds that show this amazing understand of the instruments from all three players in the group. The 2CD set features one disc of material recorded in the studio, and one disc that includes a live performance from the day before! Tracks are somewhat shorter on the studio recordings, but still have a very similar spirit and sense of interplay. CD

✨✧ Sonore (Gustafsson/Vandermark/Brotzmann)No One Ever Works Alone ... CD
Okka Disk, 2004. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A mighty mighty album that recalls the glory days of the FMP scene – a triple-talent terror that features the massive reed work of Mats Gustafsson, Ken Vandermark, and Peter Brotzmann! Given that Gustafsson and Vandermark are the two key heirs to the sound that Brotzmann first forged back in the 60s and 70s, the pairing is a perfect one – and somehow, the trio manage to find even more strength, energy, and creativity working together on this set than on any of their recent pairings. Tracks are spare, improvised, and beautifully creative – and titles include "Elements Of Refusal", "Broken Hymn", "Hammer Requiem", "Blessed Assurance Uninsured", "No One Ever Works Alone", and "Death Can Only Kill Me Once". ✨✧ Sonore (Gustafsson/Vandermark/Brotzmann)Only The Devil Has No Dreams ... CD
Jazzwerkstatt (Germany), 2007. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Three horns, and a hell of a lot of power – the trio of Peter Brotzmann, Mats Gustafsson, and Ken Vandermark – all recorded live together in a wonderfully echoey space! The players have worked with each other often over the years – Brotzmann's older horn an inspiration for, and getting new energy from younger players Gustafsson and Vandermark – and together, the three continue to represent the cream of the crop of reed-based free jazz, especially on a performance as great as this one! Brotzmann plays tenor, alto, tarogato, and b flat clarinet; Gustafsson handles baritone, slide-sax, and flutephone; and Vandermark works with tenor, baritone, and b flat clarinet too. Titles include "Open Shore", "Driftwood", "First Feedback", and "Straight Into The Light". CD
