✨✧ Sonic YouthBad Moon Rising ... LP
Homestead, 1985. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A huge turning point for Sonic Youth – one of those records that suddenly made the world understand that they could craft songs as well as they could craft noise – propelling them from the New York underground onto the turntables of hipsters around the globe! The set's still one of our favorite by the group – and includes the beautifully sinister "Death Valley 69", with fantastic guest lyrics from Lydia Lunch – plus "Brave Men Run", "Society Is A Hole", "Ghost Bitch", "I Love Her All The Time", "Just Is Might", "I'm Insane", and "Justice Is Might". LP, Vinyl record album

Goofin', 1988. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sonic Youth's best ever – bringing the earlier, noisier impulses into an anthemic rock realm -with incredible results! Daydream Nation's legancy looms as heavily over the indie rock to come over the next 20-or-so years as much as any other album album we can think of...hell, just the first 2 songs do that – and it doesn't let up 'til the end. Perfection! Includes "Teen Age Riot", "Silver Rocket", "The Sprawl", 'Cross The Breeze", "Eric's Trip", "Total Trash", "Hey Joni", "Providence", "Candle", "Rain King" and the closing "Kissability" suite. ✨✧ Lee MorganSonic Boom (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note, 1967/1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lost genius from trumpeter Lee Morgan – a session recorded for Blue Note in 1967, but not issued until the late 70s – and even then, only for a very short time! The session has Morgan moving into that wonderful last stage of his career – working in tight formation towards a sound that still had that groovier hardbop styles of earlier recordings, but which also unfolds towards a more ambitious spiritual jazz mode. The writing on the session is superb – original tunes that crackle with energy in a surge of dark notes and shadowy moods, inspiring the soloists to express themselves at levels that rank with their best work of the time! The group features David Newman on tenor – sounding completely different, and far more righteous, than on his Atlantic sides of the 60s – plus Cedar Walton on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. A great sound overall – right up there with Tom Cat or The Gigolo for lyrical modernism – and with titles that include "Sneaky Pete", "The Mercenary", "Sonic Boom", and "Mumbo Jumbo". Plus, the album is expanded here by 6 more tracks – all recorded in 1969, and only briefly issued on a 2LP late 70s album called The Procrastinator. These tunes have a slightly different, almost sadder feel – with a group that includes Julian Priester, George Coleman, and Harold Mabern – on more wonderful originals that include "Cla Til Da", "Uncle Rough", "Mr Johnson", and "The Stroker". ✨✧ Wadada Leo Smith/George Lewis/John ZornSonic Rivers ... CD
Tzadik, 2014. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent session from trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, with trombone and electronics by George Lewis, and alto sax by John Zorn! It's got the jagged, freely experimental vibe you'd expect from such a trio, but it moves with a deliberate sonic flow, hence the title, albeit with some sharp edges. Plenty of muscular interplay amongst the trio, with Lewis's occasional electronic flourishes serving as an exciting wild card element, but there's a roominess and an overall sense of restraint here that works really well. Great stuff! Includes "Cecil Taylor", "The Art Of Counterpoint", "North", "South", "East", "West", "Screaming Grass" and "The Culture Of Gun Violence In The US". CD

David Boykin ExpanseHazel Boykin – Big & Fine ... CD
Sonic Healing Ministries, 2004. Used ... $6.99
A great lost performance from David Boykin's Expanse group – one of the boldest forces in Chicago underground jazz a few years back! The lineup here is great – with Boykin on tenor, Nicole Mitchell on flute, Josh Abrams on bass, James Baker on piano, and Myron Cherry on drums – working together beautifully in a tribute to the late Hazel Boykin – at a level that arguably has more structure and force than even other great Boykin recordings of the time! The interplay between tenor and flute is wonderful – very complex, but also deeply soulful, and quite organic – and David's especially great, blowing with that spiritual power that really made us sit up and take notice when he first came onto the scene. Titles include "His & Hers", "1/20/03", "Eli Whitney", "Gates", and "Big & Fine". CD

Rob FrankenFender Rhodes ... CD
Sonic Scenery (Netherlands), Mid 70s. Used 2CD ... $26.99
Incredible Fender Rhodes from Rob Franken – a beautiful collection of rare recordings made in the mid 70s! All of this work was never issued here in the US – and most of it features Franken in really laidback, stripped-down settings – working some soulful magic on the keys of the Fender Rhodes, with a depth in sound that easily matches some of the bigger-name keyboardists in the US during the 70s! The package is filled with gems you'd never find in American record racks (or European ones, for that matter!) – and although many of the numbers are trio tunes, a few of them expand the group with other players who include Jimmy Owens or Clark Terry on flugelhorn, and Ernie Wilkins on tenor. Titles include "Absorbed Love", "Title Wave", "Six Seven Eight", "Terry Tune", "Esopet", "Straight Back", and "Look Softly". Also features a bonus CD – with a long live version of "Secret Love", plus interviews and other materials that make an "audio portrait" of Franken, but in Dutch language. CD

Palm UnitHommage A Jef Gilson ... LP
Super Sonic Jazz (Netherlands), 2018. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
A beautiful tribute to pianist Jef Gilson – one of the hippest French jazz talents of the 60s and 70s – put together by a combo who take their name from his legendary Palm Records label! The group here are a quartet, and they work with wonderfully moody use of Hohner electric piano by Fred Escoffier, plus a bit of Farfisa and Hammond – of which are used spaciously, over rhythms that often move a lot more fiercely – with a third element created from the soulful tenor work of Lionel Martin – a saxophonist who really gets the spirit of the older Palm Records releases right! Actually, the whole group gets the spirit right – working here with a knowledge of the freer corners of jazz, but never going to that space – and instead hanging back in this spiritual blend of global currents, but all with a sensibility that's really unique. The mixture of tenor and harder electric piano lines is already great enough – but the loose rhythms at the core are what really send things home – on titles that include the Jef Gilson compositions "Mother Africa", "Chant Inca", "Chakan", "Mode De Fa", "Newport Bounce", and "Ouverture Jazz Pour San Remo" – plus a version of "The Creator Has A Master Plan". Bento AraujoLindo Sonho Delirante Vol 3 – 100 Fearless Records From Brazil 1986 to 2000 ... Book
Poeira Zine (Brazil), 2021. New Copy ... $34.99 39.00
Author Bento Araujo has given us previous examinations of crucial Brazilian records in the 60s and 70s – and this important third volume shows just how strongly the spirit of experimentation continued well into the 21st Century – as the CD era opened up new frontiers for sonic exploration, and Brazilian artists moved far past the familiar styles of the past! Given that much of this music has not been reissued over the years, the volume is maybe even more important than the previous two – and like those, it presents page-by-page listing of records – with a full page reproduction of the cover art, listings of tracks and titles, other details, and a page of notes on each record in both English and Portuguese. There's plenty of titles here that we're betting you don't have in your record collection – and the book is a great guide to digging much deeper into the wealth of amazing sounds from Brazil. 229 pages, softcover, full color throughout. AricaHeaven (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Just Sunshine/Tidal Waves, 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99
An early musical moment from the Arica Institute – a spiritual collective whose many members supposedly recorded this album over the course of a night spent at the Electric Lady studio – with such a shifting lineup of sounds and participants, the album doesn't list any particular musicians at all! The work is on the farther side of cosmic jazz – almost hearkening towards more meditative modes at times – such as the later recordings of Laraaji – but with elements that are also borrowed from Indian music and other global sources, often presented and produced in a way that the sonic elements bubble into a heady aural space that's difficult to navigate without letting yourself go entirely. A tremendous recording from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – done during the same Paris stretch as their Great Black Music classics on the BYG/Actuel label – and a set that easily matches, if not tops, those classics! You can really hear the group finding their own space here – taking some of the free jazz explorations of the Chicago scene in the late 60s, and forging them with an even earthier use of both percussion, and the more offbeat sonic possibilities of their own instruments – often with a sense of surprise that you don't always get from some of their later albums. American Dreams, 2021. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
Introspective improvisations from saxophonist Dylan Baldi and drummer Jayson Gerycz – both members of the band Cloud Nothings, but working here in a much more free jazz-styled setting! Side one features an extended track titled "Hermit Thrush/Vat Of Oil" – really building up nicely at first with open, almost rambling work on the drum kit – matched with saxophone work from Baldi that slowly builds, still in soulful spiritual territory for the most part – occasionally hitting some wilder, raspier moments – almost in an Arthur Doyle sort of way. Side two has some more subtle sonic interplay on "Frog Congress At Dawn", a very organic track – and ramps things up with more freewheeling improv on "The Holy Retrievers In Transit". The first-ever full presentation of the music for Ghoulies – the creepy 80s horror film about monsters that would come up from the toilet! Richard Band's music is surprisingly rich and full for the film – done with light orchestrations that evoke a nice sense of fantasy – floating strings and woodwinds at some points, darker and more moody elements at others – but all acting together as this very evocative sonic landscape – rescued by Band from the original musical elements, and sequenced here to finally fit the order of the film. Titles include "Jonathan Prepares", "Basement Discovery", "First Incantation", "Becky Is Leaving", "Organ Track", "The Ghoulie Attacks", and "Mr Dick's Tongue Lashing" – plus "Surrender" and "Dancing With A Monster" by Fela Johnson – both of which are more electronic and keyboard-heavy. A contemporary horror score, but one that's handled by Basement's Glare with a nice mix of modes – including some darker electronic textures that feel like they're borrowed from the farther reaches of 80s indie soundtracks! Make no mistake, this isn't the easily-done keyboard score that some folks use to replicate 80s modes – and instead, the group have a deeper understanding of sonic possibilities – able to often work in the very low end of the spectrum, creating tension that builds from a bassy bottom and then steps into the light with a bit more keyboards. CD features 24 tracks in all – including "Mutants", "A New Beginning", "Getting Fresh Food", "Kinslayers", "Udolfo Violates Ornella", "Melody Of A Corrupt Love", and "Vera Unchained". CD

Robbie BashoBashovia (Falconer's Arm Vols 1 & 2/Song Of The Stallion) ... CD
Takoma, 1967/1968. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A great collection of tracks from three important early albums from Robbie Basho – all issued on Takoma Records, under the guidance of John Fahey – an early champion of Basho, who was an artist who was every bit a revolutionary acoustic player as his mentor! Basho a guitarist who's often known as a contemporary of John Fahey – but one that we might well put in an entirely different class altogether! The music here is mostly solo guitar – on 12-string and standard acoustic guitar – and Basho has this sublime way of spinning out these long, almost modal lines – clearly inspired a bit by Indian music, given his comments in the notes – but with a result that's very much his own, and which has this sonic sensibility that's years ahead of his time! If you dig Fahey or Sandy Bull, you'll find plenty to dig here too – but there's also elements of Basho's late 60s performance that wouldn't turn up until decades later in the playing and phrasing of others. There's a bit of vocalization on a few numbers – a strange style that's less singing than channeling the planet – and titles include "The Falconer's Arm", "Lost Lagoon Suite", "Song Of The Snowy Ranges", "Pasha", "The Haji", "Khatum", and "Pavan Hindustan". Official Beatles Fan Club (UK), 1960s. Near Mint- 7 x 7" Set ... $269.99
Limited binder-style set featuring picture disc pressings of some of the coolest music The Beatles ever recorded – a series of sides from special 7" singles that were originally sent only to members of their 60s fan club – and never saw commercial release at the time! Given that the music here documents a year-by-year visit with the group, the approach is one that definitely shows their transformation over a few short years – from the witty, quippy Fab Four of the first few years, to the more intellectual lads of the mid 60s, to the way-out cats of the final years – a time when the Christmas singles turned more into sonic experiments, with maybe a bit of Monty Python humor in the mix! There's definitely some music here, but it's second to the presence of the group – saying "hi", telling jokes, and showing a side of themselves you're not likely to otherwise hear on record. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Dominique Blanc-FrancardAilleurs ... LP
Riviera/Lion, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A hell of a record from the French scene of the early 70s – released by an artist who'd worked in the backdrop of many famous productions at the time, but who really bursts forth here with his own sort of special genius! The record is definitely a rock set, but often defies categorization, too – like some of those unique French recordings of the period, which were able to draw on so many different strands and styles at once – all without caring if they ever fell into any sort of specific genre! Instrumentation mixed acoustic guitar with freakier, fuzzier touches – and the sonic mix is sublime, with all these unusual elements percolating back and forth – really making the whole thing sound very different than anything from the Anglo world. Dominique handled most of the arrangements himself, recording at the legendary Studio Du Chateau D'Herouville, where he was in residence – and titles include "Il Est Fou", "Arrete De Rever", "Laissez Ce Reveil", "Ballade Extra Terrestre", "Icare", "Jeudi Je T'Aime", and "Ah Que C'Est Bon". The feel's quite hard to describe – kind of a cross between Sun Ra and Moondog, with the righteous style of vocalization that you might find on some of the Max Roach experiments with voices, recorded in the relaxed and expressive style of the early AACM – all of which means it's a great little record, with a very striking approach! Titles include "Transfiguration", "Nature's Children", "Transcendental March", "Boundless Rhythm", "Sweet Illumination", and "Celestial Strings". CD

George Burton, 2020. New Copy ... $7.99
An album that explodes with life, soul, and energy right from the very first note – a jazz set from keyboardist George Burton, but a record that weaves in lots of different strands along the way – with a sense of imagination that's certain to make Burton's music something to really keep an ear on for years to come! Yet already, this record is more than enough – and grabs us in a way we're not usually grabbed – as George balance his own bold energy on piano and Fender Rhodes with occasional vocals from a female singer, work by Tim Warfield on soprano sax, Chris Hemingway on alto, and Andy Bianco on guitar, and a trio of different drummers who really know when to kick in and propel the album forward! Burton is never content to just lay down a solo, or swing a groove – and there's a larger sonic palette of soul to the record that has to be heard to be understood – yet even the few straighter jazz numbers are pretty amazing too. Imagine the joy you felt when you first heard the early records of Robert Glasper, and you'll get some of the energy this record can deliver – on titles that include "Finding", "Gratitude", "Spirit", "Reciprocity", "Third Prayer", "Finite Space", "Us", "Power", and "Turn". Calibro 35 have certainly gained momentum in our book – as the group's given us more than a few albums over the years, and just keep sounding better and better with each new one! This set has the group still strongly in their core territory of Italian soundtrack and sound library funk – but they're also pushing the sound with some flavors that are very much their own – newer rhythmic and instrumental modes that fold nicely with the older-style elements, and really help keep the whole thing from just sounding like a retro-inspired set of funk! There's lots of cool sonic textures and colors throughout – and titles include "Stan Lee", "Black Moon", "Tom Down", "Automata", "4 x 4", "Glory Fake Nation", "Death Of Storytelling", and "One Nation Under A Format". The set features long tracks that spin out beautifully – driven that that rhythmic drive that the group always had at their best – so different than some of their contemporaries who might have gotten stuck in a sonic corner and never found their way out – while Can was bursting forth with energy and imagination that has kept them still sounding amazing as the decades move on! The shifting mix of Carter's instrumentation is matched by a never-ending flow of imagination from the fingers of Shipp – often moving fast, with that sense of freedom that marked his earlier work – but circling back to some of the more sense-making moments that have graced his more mature recordings in recent years! Weird Cry, 2015/2018/2020. New Copy 3CD ... $36.99
Three different performances from guitar genius Eugene Chadbourne – each recorded in a very intimate setting at Grady's Record Refuge in Ventura! Each CD features two long tracks – one an extended performance with guitar, the other with banjo – usually with Chadbourne delivering some of his wonderfully offbeat vocals – almost an extension of a Michael Hurley mode from the 70s, but with all of the guitar creativity that's always marked Chadbourne's music – which means lots of sonic stops along the way, and unusual inflections that really mark the music with a creative complexity that's sometimes hidden by the innocence of Eugene's vocals. There's maybe even more currents of Takoma Records-styled outsider acoustic modes here than on some of Chadbourne's work from decades back – which is A-OK with us, as it opens up a further side of his character during these maturing years. The group have some sonic roots in the past, but also embrace some of the newer freedoms of the current spiritual jazz scene – modes that would be right at home in both the world of London's Brownswood Records, or Chicago's International Anthem – really moving past the obvious, and in ways that have Trible's vocals maybe sounding more righteous and important than ever before! Dwight's as much a poet as he is a singer – and gets superb accompaniment here from Derf Reklaw on congas and flute, Pablo Calogero on tenor and flutes, Christopher Garcia on indigenous percussion, and Breeze Smith on percussion, drums, and loops. There's a very deep sonic texture to the whole album – one that's echoed by the cover image – a dark tapestry of sound from which the voice, flute, and tenor especially soar out – on titles that include "Nature's Vision", "Blue Skies", "How Long", "Motherless Child", "Water Flow", "Movin On", "Olbap", and "Tragedy Escapes". One of the most insanely wonderful soundtracks from the late 60s – filled with weird instrumental touches and sublimely groovy vocals that really match the mad spirit of the film! Although Bob Crewe's best known for his work as a producer for bigger names in the 60s, he really shines here on this set – stepping out with a mad mix of styles that blends 60s adult easy with spacier themes – using primitive electronics and odd studio tricks to capture the cartoony space landscape of Jane Fonda's world in the move. The Glitterhouse sing on a few cuts, in a great mod rock soundtrack mode – and the pacing, timing, and overall presentation of the music here is really great – an audio document that almost feels like a "sonic film" in and of itself! The music isn't really jazz, but we're not sure what else to call it either – as the duo mix together lots of keyboards, tenor, drums, and plenty of beats and samples – but in ways that are very unconventional, and which have an intensity that's very different than Alabaster's previous record – almost some of the genre-crossing modes that we loved in sonic experiments from London in the 80s, but hipper overall. A brilliant reunion of some key members of the AACM in Chicago – recorded at the Chicago Jazz Festival in a stunning performance that features drummer Jack DeJohnette in the lead, plus Muhal Richard Abrams on piano, Henry Threadgill on alto and flute, and Roscoe Mitchell on a variety of reeds! Bassist Larry Gray completes the group, and also plays a bit of cello – and the music has this wonderfully freewheeling, organic quality that really takes us back to the early years of the avant scene in Chicago – that very special sense of improvisation that the players forged back in the day – with an especially sonic-sensitive ear tuned towards the musicianship. The album is neither the usual ECM mode, nor even what we'd expect from DeJohnette – and instead takes us back to the earliest utterings from Chicago on labels like Delmark or Nessa. A classic album from this great group from Ghana – one that probably got more exposure than usual, thanks to the fact that they were taken under the wing of Brian Eno, who produced the album, in a tradition that would stretch back to Ginger Baker's work with Fela! The group have a great sound here – bold, fast-moving rhythms – with elements in Eno's production that almost recall his work with the Talking Heads – especially his way of bringing out the most robust elements in the basslines and percussion! The whole thing is done with a great balance – nicely respectful, but also with a slight updating of the sonic quality – yet never in a way that's got the more commercial inclinations of the world music boom to come. A pivotal album from Fairport Convention – hardly the "holiday" you might expect from the title, and instead a set that has the group really reaching out for some new ideas and styles in their music! Sandy Denny is firmly in place here – taking the lead on most numbers – but Ian Matthews is also still in the group, bringing in that bit of west coast style that we loved from the first record – and which keeps the overall feel here more 60s than ancient, especially given the upped electrics on a few numbers. Ashley Hutchings' bass is brilliant – almost more this subtle, sonic force at the bottom than an instrument on its own – yet also still away from the more modal elements to come on the next few records. And although there's less traditional tunes on here than later, the group themselves are already becoming timeless – and unlike anything that had ever come before. The group clearly have an influence from sweet soul of the 70s – but their presentation is more contemporary too – both at an instrumental level, where they seem to have winnowed down the best sonic elements of larger orchestrations – and at a vocal level, where they never try to push too hard for their range, or overstate their case too much. We really appreciate that subtle balance – and it resonates strongly throughout, on titles that include "Love Me", "Honest Man", "Long Weekend", "Telephone/Good Place", "Heart", "Life For Each Other", "Special", "Wander", "Alone In Love", and "Fat Night's Theme". At the time of the set, the group was riding high on the success and controversy of their singles "Relax" and "Two Tribes" – but in the ambitious ZTT mode, sought to expand their sound way past familiar hits, and into a realm of sonic exploration that rivaled that of labelmates Art Of Noise. Don't get us wrong, because the Frankie of this album is still very much in groove-oriented territory – but they also let Horn take over with some more striking tunes that are both longer and shorter than the usual pop track – offsetting the vocal numbers on the record with a rich tapestry of musical backdrops that also more firmly forward the group's social and sexual leanings. ✨✧ Frankie Goes To HollywoodWelcome To the Pleasuredome ... LP
ZTT/Island, 1984. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99
Arguably one of the greatest concept albums of the 80s – and the only really strong full length album cut by Frankie Goes To Hollywood! The album features surprising covers of "War", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Born To Run" – plus the hits "Relax" and "Two Tribes", and the original numbers "Welcome To the Pleasure Dome", "Krisco Kisses", "The Ballad Of 32", "Wish The Lads Were Here", "Black Night White Light", "The Only Star In Heaven", "The Power Of Love", and "Bang". Funky BijouAdventures In The Land Of Breaks ... LP
Stereophonk (France), 2020. New Copy ... $34.99
These guys definitely take the "breaks" in the title seriously – as the music explodes with fresh funky drums right from the start – very much in an old school style, but mixed with elements that also showcase more of sonic influence from decades of hip hop production too! Most of the tracks are funk cuts created by mixing – ala the early years of the Melting Pot label – but there's also maybe more of a vintage vibe going on, and something of a Wu-Tang-inspired love of offbeat sounds and musical elements. Titles include "Nagasaki Break", "Itchy The Blind", "Okinawa Break", "Late Night", "Karate Break", "Sec Undo", and "Mountain Funk". LP, Vinyl record album

Ron GeesinPot-Boilers – Soundtracks To Stephen Dwoskin Films 1966 to 1970 ... LP
Trunk (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $23.99
The great Ron Geesin is a man of many talents – UK studio genius, ace composer, arranger, and more – with ties to worlds that include film music, sound library work, easy listening, and even collaborations with Pink Floyd! The music here is all from films by underground director Stephen Dwoskin – a British filmmaker who was very influenced by the avant film scene in New York – and who, like some of the best of those artists, really saw music as a key component to his overall work! Gavin Bryars later scored some of Dwoskin's 70s efforts – but this set brings together mindblowing music by Geesin – work that, like Ron at his best on other records, is often as experimentally sonic as it is musical – created from elements that are almost impossible to discern, once they get the Geesin touch – and presented here in a long-overdue musical document of five films that have now crumbled to the ashes of time. Selections include "Chinese Checkers", "Alone", "Pot Boiler", "Feet", and "Moment". LP, Vinyl record album

Ghost Funk OrchestraOde To Escapism ... CD
Karma Chief/Colemine, 2020. New Copy ... $9.99 12.98
This one-man orchestra just keeps on getting better and better with each new record – working with the funk you'd expect from the name, but also all these cool and moody touches that mix together David Axelrod-like ambition with some of the sharper snap of hip hop production! This time around, Seth Applebaum has a fair bit of strings and horns in the mix – plus added voices, some strong lead singers – and an array of sonic touches that make for a richness that's much deeper than it is ghostly! Previous records were good, but Seth's really onto something great hear – and mixes together strands of sounds into something that's much richer than its parts – emerging as a surprising maestro for the underground, on titles that include "Stoop Talk", "Mourning", "Drop Me A Line", "Little Bird", "Fuzzy Logic", "Quiet Soul", "Tojours", "Queen Bee", and "Cost Of Living". Trumpeter Jaimie Branch makes a very strong addition to the trio of guitarist Dave Gisler – bringing her tremendous sense of sound to the carefully-crafted lines of sonic color that flow from Gisler's strings! The rest of the group features Raffaele Bossard on bass and Lionel Friedli on drums – both of whom often keep things moving forward while Branch and Gisler get pretty loose and free – Dave sometimes in fuzzier territory, almost rocking at one point – other times more in a loose sense of tonal exploration. Reedman Mats Gustafsson is in very cool territory here – blowing a variety of saxes, but also getting manipulated by the electric treatments of Wendy Gondeln – Mats' violin partner on the album's duo improvisations, but also a soundshaper with talents to be reckoned with! Gustafsson also opens up on some live electronics too, plus a bit of piano mate – and this electric side of his talents is a new one, but a great one too – mixing familiar improvisation with a larger sonic palette, in ways that almost make for a merging of free jazz and musique concrete! Some of the tracks are quite tuneful, even if fairly freewheeling – and the set also features editing and mixing from Wolfgang Voigt, and guest guitar on two tracks from Martin Siewert. David Grubbs & Nikos VeliotisHarmless Dust ... LP
Headz/Improved Sequence (Italy), 2005. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Beautifully minimal sounds from the duo of David Grubbs and Nikos Veliotis – Grubbs on piano and Hammond organ, and Veliotis on cello and e-bowed piano – all instruments that are used together in really wonderful ways! The first half of the set features piano and cello – the latter of which is often gently bowed, with these long-running tones that are very different than the spacious, well-chosen notes that come from Grubbs' piano – almost as if Veliotis is trying to create this subtle cloud of darkness to offset the brighter tones of the keys. That approach shifts slightly on the second half – as both the Hammond and bowed piano have a similar resonance together – making these very slow, subtle sonic shifts as the record moves on – creating some very nice tension near the end! Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 15.00
A fantastic meeting of the musical minds – coming together here in a set of live improvisations recorded at a record store in Greece! The setting's an unusual one, and the music is too – sounds that really move past the usual for all three players, but especially David Grubbs and Mats Gustafsson – both of whom seem very comfortable here in some of the sonic territory that we normally hear more from Rob Mazurek! Grubbs' guitar is quite different than on some of his own records – especially the solo acoustic moments – and Mats reminds us that he's not just a hell of a saxophonist, but also a master of many other ways to disturb the flow of air – delivering work here on flute, fluteophone, and live electronics – the last of which is matched with more electronics from Rob Mazurek, who also plays piccolo trumpet and wood flute too. Every song has a different shape and texture, which is a further testament to both the sensitivities of the musicians, and their sympathies with each other – and titles include "Not In A Hall Of Mirrors", "Creep Mission", "City Stones Sleep", and "Goats & Hollers". Far Out (UK), 2006. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
A Brazilian tribute to football – but one that's given a distinctly London twist – as core rhythms by Wilson Das Neves, Dom Um Romao, and others are mixed up and augmented by Da Lata, Zero dB, Roc Hunter, Fauna Flash, and Osunlade! The album's got a depth and compelling quality that goes far beyond other records by Grupo Batuque – as tightly-played percussion riffs are mixed with sound effects, crowd noise, and commentary from football games – all in a rich sonic tapestry that goes past simple samba or batucada! The whole thing's almost like an audio document to the greatness of the sport and its importance in Brazilian culture – but thanks to the globe-spanning efforts of Far Out, the added production help should help settle more than a few disputes at the World Cup! Okka Disk, 1995. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
The first American recording of Swedish reed genius Mats Gustafsson – done at a time when he was first reaching out to the Chicago jazz scene, the start of a legacy that would continue for decades! Mats is already an amazing force on his horns here – which include soprano, baritone, and fluteophone – flowing out with unusual textures and shapes that quickly mark him as one of the most unique and spontaneously creative players to emerge from the European scene in years. The first half of the set has Gustafsson working with percussionist Michael Zerang – whose sense of soundshape really matches Mats on reeds. The second is maybe a more unusual pairing, as both forces were an important part of Chicago at the time – Gene Coleman on clarinet, and Jim O'Rourke on guitar, accordion, and percussion – working strongly as an improviser, before he left the city for Sonic Youth and a host of other great endeavors. Titles include "Parrot Fish Eye", "I'll Give You This", "Knotted Canvas", "Even The Rain", "Dolphin Nap Music", "Where's The End", and "Tied Door". CD

There's something about the Eastern European scene that seems to pull out some of the darkest sounds you'll ever hear from avant players – and this recent Lithuanian performance by Mats Gustafsson is key proof of that fact! The album's got a sound that's often even more abstract than avant jazz – and Mats plays post-musically, in a range of odd tones and textures on baritone, slide saxophone, and alto fluteophone – matched well by the equally compelling sonic experiments of the quartet! Liudas Mockunas plays additional reeds, often as offbeat as Gustafsson – and other instrumentation includes bass and double drums. HarmoniaComplete Works (Musik Von/Deluxe/Live 1974/Tracks & Traces/Documents 1975) 5CD set) ... CD
Brain/Gronland (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy 5CD ... $38.99 40.99
A stunning set – one that brings together two rare albums from this legendary group – plus essential rare material too! First up is Musik Von Harmonia – an electronic prog classic – served up by the trio of Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius from Cluster, plus Michael Rother of Neu! The tracks here have a definite Cluster-like sound – instrumentals that use organ, keyboards, guitar, and electronic percussion to build up some wonderfully analogue-styled grooves – often quite slow at first, but filling up nicely as added elements come into the mix! The record's easily one of our favorites from the time, and has a much darker sound than later Moebius/Roedelius work. Titles include "Watussi", "Ohrwurm", "Ahoi", "Dino", "Sonneschein", "Sehr Kosmisch", "Veterano" and "Hausmusik". Next is Deluxe – a brilliant little album from Harmonia – quite possibly their greatest record ever, and a set that's wonderfully balanced between progressive and electronic modes! There's a live drummer on the set – Mani Neumeier of Guru Guru – and although he still plays with a spare, circular mode that recalls the Harmonia rhythms of before, there's also a slight bit of propulsion here too – one that pushes the keyboards and guitars alongside nicely. There's also some spacey vocals at times, which when coupled with these other elements, gives the record a sound that's a bit like early Neu – although still a bit more electronic overall. A great bridge between two worlds of music in the German scene of the 70s – with tracks that include "Gollum", "Monza", "Notre Dame", "Deluxe", "Walky Talky", and "Kekse". Next is Live 1974 – a hypnotic live set from Harmonia – and a pretty incredible sonic document of the hugely important group made of Krautrock lynchpins Michael Rother, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Mobius! The gig was one from March of 1974 in Griessem, Germany and it finds the trio kicking out the trance inducing ambience, lumbering 70s style electronic manipulation, and improvisational interplay without ever sacrificing a heady groove! The group was hardly content to simply play the tracks from their couple of LPs – taking a much more freeform, exploratory and beautifully languorous approach to their sound – a pretty raw, but no less beautiful swirl of electronic percussion, keys, synthesizer and ambient guitar. Titles include "Shaumberg", "Veteranissimo", "Arabesque", "Holta-Polta" and "Ueber Ottenstein". Tracks & Traces is textural mood pieces and quite beautiful material from Harmonia and Eno – beautiful mid 70s recordings and a few unreleased gems – wholly wonderful material that weirdly didn't see a release for about 30 years! Some of the tunes are sparely furnished, kind of pastoral bits of echoing atmospherics and trance inducing sound loops, others with more jarring bits of dissonant tension, and all of it holding up proudly with the better known work of the sound masters involved, together and separately! Includes "Welcome", "Atmosphere", "Camos Comapneros", "By The Riverside", "Weird Dream", "Almost", "When Shade Was Born". "Aubade" and more. Last up is Documents 1975 – four unreleased tracks all recorded during the pivotal year of 1975, when the group was really pushing its sound a bit, and helping find a new path forward for the energy of Krautrock! As with other Harmonia work, there's a sense of layering and modal progression that drives most of these numbers forward – but there's also a bit of compactness, too – which has some of the most important musical elements playing a stronger role more quickly – showing both the direction that group members Dieter Moebius and Hans Joachim Roedelius would take in later work, and the influence that Harmonia would have on other European acts through the post-punk years. Mani Neumeir of Guru Guru joins in on drums on two tracks – and along with Michael Rother, the varied instrumentation from Moebius and Roedelius includes lots of keyboards, electronics, guitar, Fender Rhodes, and even a nagoja harp! Titles include "Tki Taka At Harmonia Studio In Forst", "Proto Deluxe At Harmonia Studio In Forst", "Live At Fabrik In Hamburg", and "Live At Onkel Po In Hamburg". CD

They definitely got the title right on this one – because the group never seems to move in any sort of direct line – instead always tripping around nicely with all these hip little twists and turns! Karl Hector & The Malcouns are the same loose collective of players you'll know from their work as The Whitefield Brothers, Poets Of Rhythms, and other famous combos – and here they take on a whole host of exotic rhythms and instrumental elements – but always in a way that mixes them up with the heavy funk we've come to expect! There's a bit more psych at play with The Malcouns than some of the other groups from the musicians – which seems to really set them free to explore the outer limits of sonic consciousness – all with the feel of some weird electric ethno experimental project on a late 60s label like Limelight or Verve. Afro Funk elements crop up from time to time, but always in a relatively abstract way – and titles include "El Gusto", "Girma's Lament", "Kaifa (parts 1 & 2)", "Bring It On Down", "Mission Control", "Who's Foolin Who", and "Sharpville Massacre". We really love the music of Theo Hill more and more with each new record – and here, the pianist is working in a quartet with Joel Ross on vibe – a player who makes a perfect partner for his music! Both Hill and Ross have this open sense of sound and timing – often using the spaces between the notes as much as the notes themselves – even when things are moving at a more full-on level, which they do often – thanks to contributions from Rashaan Carter on bass and Mark Whitfield on drums! Yet it's the sonic interplay between the vibes and keys that really blow us away – maybe especially at the few points when Theo picks up Fender Rhodes, and balances out the record with even more warmth next to his acoustic tracks. Defever plays guitar and piano with plenty of effects – already hitting that spacious sound that 4AD would pioneer in the studio with a lot more expense – somehow even more amazing here in the stripped-down setting of these home recordings. We're not entirely sure if the set was recorded underground, but there's definitely a sense of resonance that comes through in the performance – this echoey space that just seems to further intertwine the improvisations of the members of the group! Katarsis4 is an all-horn group – with Arminas Bizys on alto and baritone, Kazimieras Jusinskas on soprano and alto, Algridas Janonis on alto and hornpipe, and Danielus Pancerovas on baritone and alto – a blend of horns that makes for an amazing array of sounds and tones throughout the one long improvised performance on the set – sometimes all tied together, almost harmonizing – other times confronting each other in the open space of the performance – really beautiful, and in ways that are quite different than standard saxophone quartet material! Basil KirchinEveryday Madness ... LP
Trunk (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $23.99
Rare work from the archives of Basil Kirchen – very appropriately titled, given the madness of the legendary UK composer! As Jonny Trunk explains in the notes, Kirchen left the music behind with little in the way of information – but that hardly detracts from the quality of the music, as each of the three selections on the record are a very compelling part of his legacy! "Pat's Pigs" begins the set – and is possibly some field recordings, which are then processed, with improvised music added in – all with the end result of maybe some of the more sonic/textural experiments on FMP in the latter half of the 70s. "Electronic" is clearly a pun of a title – as the core elements of the music are voices, including some of autistic children – recorded by Kirchen, then processed and augmented – with this surprising sense of beauty and depth that comes in the way they're organized and mixed with very subtle low-end horns – all with surprisingly musical results. Last up is "The Suspended Fourth" – a piece that is maybe more jazz or soundtrack overall – and maybe partly in the territory of the looser minimalists of the 70s! There's a bit of guitar, some nice reed work, and this really poetic quality to the music overall – especially when the use of vibes brings out some stunning chromatic elements in the recording. The set features vocals on a few tracks by Corey King – a great singer who's a great match for the sonic qualities of Kuroda – and other musicians include Craig Hill on tenor, Takeshi Ohbayashi on keyboards, and Takahiro Izunmikawa on Fender Rhodes – on titles that include "Moody", "Fade", "TKBK", "Fly Moon Die Soon", "Do No Why", and nice remakes of "Tell Me A Bedtime Story" and "Sweet Sticky Thing". KutimanWachaga ... CD
Siyal (Israel), 2020. New Copy ... $12.99
Much deeper work than we're used to hearing from Kutiman – and a set that's really widened the global scope of their sounds and influences! At the start, these guys were a funk group with a mix of psychedelic and 70s Afro-oriented influences – but they've really expanded here, and bring in spiritual jazz elements and other more sophisticated modes – all handled with a richness that's very organic, and which has a very uplifting quality we really didn't expect! There's often use of vocals by a group of female singers, in ways that recall some of the more powerful South African vocal chorus passages of vintage recordings – mixed with acoustic percussion elements, and layers of keyboards, samples, and other sonic touches – on cuts that include "Awake In The Rain", "Firefly Before Tomorrow", "A Giant Snail", "Tanzania", "Maasai", "Lost In The Bush", and "Rainbow Kilimanjaro". Charles Lloyd & The MarvelsTone Poem ... CD
Blue Note, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Beautiful work from the Marvels group of Charles Lloyd – a combo that not only features his own great sounds on tenor and flute, but also the very strong presence of Bill Frisell on guitar! Although Lloyd recorded famously with guitar players back in his early years, the sound here is very different – filtered through the sonic explorations of his albums for ECM, and inflected with that sense of color that only seems to get stronger and stronger in the work of Frisell over the years. That quality is also augmented by use of the steel guitar in the quintet, handled by Greg Leisz – alongside the bass of Reuben Rogers and drums of Eric Harland. Titles include remakes of two 60s gems – Ornette Coleman's "Rambling" and Gabor Szabo's "Lady Gabor" – plus the originals "Tone Poem", "Dismal Swamp", and "Prayer". CD

Maria Teresa LucianiSounds Of The City (Suoni Di Una Citta) ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1972. New Copy ... $26.99
An amazing sonic portrait of the modern city – one created on the early 70s Italian scene, but lost to the shifting sands of time, due to its release as a sound library-only album! We've heard Maria Teresa Luciani on a few other records of this nature – but this one may well be her greatest – music that's beyond categorization in the way it presents its subject – not really jazz or soundtrack styles at all, but also not some sort of too-modern compositional idiom either. Instead, the whole thing seems to make some sort of honest, organic sense – as it presents differing aspects of the city, both residential and commercial, public and private – often with a sense of darkness in the immediate approach, but also with a current of hope at times too. Titles include "Public Gardens", "Modern Residential Complex", "Supermarket", "Poor Neighborhoods", "Power Station", "Traffic", and "International Airport". LP, Vinyl record album

Luka ProductionsFasokan ... LP
Sahel Sounds, 2017. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Luka Productions is Luka Guindo – who created the wonderful sounds on this set on the Bamako scene, then made space for a number of other voices to step in and out of the mix! At some level, the music is almost a contemporary studio reworking of older field recording modes from Mali – very spare, with core elements on percussion and stringed instrumentation – often captured in a way that's very organic, but interwoven with enough sonic care to make us aware of the "productions" side of the project. Luka has some ties to hip hop, but this is a much more organic, earthy set – and the different singers come in almost in a conversationally collaborative approach at times. Titles include "Yelen", "Dambefoli", "Christianisme", "Allah Be", "L'Excision", "Terriya", and "Kora Koukan". LP, Vinyl record album

Egisto MacchiCitta Notte (200 gram pressing) ... LP
Cometa/Roundtable (Australia), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Way more than just another set of soundtrack work from the Italian scene of the 70s – and instead, a record that stands equally well on its own, with a really complicated mix of larger themes, folksy currents, and some avant garde instrumentation! The music is possibly some of the warmest we've ever heard from Egisto Macchi, but also some of the most complex, too – as the record begins with this mix of acoustic guitar over sonic textures, almost sentimental in quality – but soon moves into some of the more offbeat elements that define the Macchi legacy – many sounds carried far from their initial instrumental sources, coming together with an overall vibe that lies somewhere in a space between Italian soundtracks and the experimentation on the Cramps Records label. Titles include "Citta Notte", "Bidonvilles", "Orsa Maggiore", "Lampare", and "Terza Eta". LP, Vinyl record album

Madlib & OthersMadlib's Medicine Show No 3 – Beat Konducta In Africa ... CD
Madlib Invazion, 2010. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Raw crackling hip hop funk beatcraft at its deepest from mighty Madlib – working in his Beat Konducta style for this third entry in the epic Madlib's Medicine Show Series! Beat Konducta In Africa is a hazy hip hop instrumental set from 'Lib (lest you thought it might be a funky compilation of rare African material) with some additional mixing from J Rocc – based on rare African vinyl. The sound is pure Madlib/Beat Konducta heady hip hop funk – recognizable as being spun from and inspired by African material, and impeccably so, with that instantly identifiable, exploratory Madlib sonic stamp. He looks far beyond Afrobeat and funk sources, with some raw funk rock beats, psych, garage and more with some trippy vocal samples – and he's building up from blueprints records originally pressed all over Africa – Zambia, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Botswana and Ivory Coast. But too much mention of the source material risks making this sound like a compilation or a mix set, when it's Madlib all the way! Titles include "Motherland", "Raw Introduction To Afreaka", "Warrior's Theme", "Street Hustler", "Afritonic" (Pts 1 & 2), "Tradition", "Blackfire", "Obtaive", "Mtima", "African Bounce", "Freedom Play", "Natural Sound Waves", "Unika (Outro)" and many more. 43 tracks on the CD version, which includes 6 bonus tracks. Harry ManfrediniFriday The 13th – Parts 2 & 3 ... CD
La La Land, 1981/1982. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99
Beautifully chilling music to the second and third Friday The 13th films – all masterfully scored by Harry Manfredini! The sounds here aren't as electric or rockish as some of the other slasher work from the time – and in fact, most of the instrumentation is from acoustic sources, but used with the spareness and sharpness that was opened up in the generation of John Carpenter and Goblin – which makes Manfredini's use of strings a remarkable evolution in soundtrack styles! Familiar elements are often given a rasp or atonal edge – and the production sometimes emphasizes a bit of echo, too – so there's a sonic intensity to the music that comes as a very nice surprise. 2CD set features 17 tracks from Part 2, and 26 more tracks from Part 3 – the latter of which includes some re-used material from the first two films. A great package – and the first time these sounds have finally gotten their due in the CD generation. CD
