Karin Krog & Dexter GordonSome Other Spring – Blues & Ballads ... LP
Sonet (Sweden), 1970. Near Mint- ... $38.99
The icy voice of Norwegian singer Karin Krog is a perfect match for Dexter's deep soulful saxophone, and the two of them perform wonderfully together in this rare set of tracks recorded in 1970 with Kenny Drew on piano and Niel Henning Orsted-Peterson on bass. Krog has always been tremendously respectful of the players that she records with, and unlike other jazz vocal recordings, where the soloists take back seat to the singer, her recordings have them coming out front, and really sharing the spotlight – both in solo space, and in the interplay between the singer and musicians. Tracks include "Blue Eyes", "How Insensitive", "Some Other Spring", "Blue Monk", and her "Tribute To Jimmy Scott". LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese pressing, with obi! UXP 85 V.)

✨✧ Monica ZetterlundDen Sista Jantan ... CD
Sonet/Grand Prix (Sweden), 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful CD from Swedish jazz legend Monica Zetterlund – a record that's quite different than most of her earlier work, and done in an style that's part jazz, part folksy, part experimental – showing the changing modes of expression of the cutting edge European jazz vocal scene of the 70s! Tracks have a really great approach – often making good use of percussion to create skittish rhythms that have a slightly loungey feel, but which are also carried off in a style that's far from cheesy. All lyrics are in Swedish, but Monica's presentation of the material is more than compelling enough to make us forget the language difference – and titles include "Vals I Mejram", "Du", "Det Finns Ju Faktiskt Telefon", and "Svartvit Kalypso". Mel TormeLive At The Maisonette ... LP
Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint- ... $5.99
Great live work from a near-lost stretch of Mel Torme – a time when he wasn't recording as much as a few years before, but still has a hell of a lot of power in performance! Backings are tight and jazzy – served up by the Al Porcino, with the same punchy approach that Marty Paich gave Mel on other albums – and set to some surprisingly nice arrangements that Torme supposedly handled himself. The recording quality brings a nice sort of liveness to the date – really captures the crowd's enthusiasm in the Maisonette Room of the St Regis – and titles include "Jet Set", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Route 66", and "It Takes Too Long To Learn To Live Alone" – plus an extended "Gershwin Medley", a hint of Mel's medley years to come – and a surprising take on Stevie Wonder's "Superstition". Maynard FergusonLive From San Francisco ... LP
PAJ, 1984. Sealed ... $7.99
Maynard Ferguson live – and still holding onto all the great sort of grooves he cooked up in the studio during the 70s! The performance is from a 1984 appearance at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall – and Maynard's got the group in super-tight, super-soulful formation – with a very strong focus on the rhythms at the bottom, but plenty of room for spirited solos over the top – including work by Ferguson on trumpet, Tim Reis on soprano and alto, Steve Wiest on trombone, and Gregg Bissonette on drums. Titles include "Coconut Champagne", "Fireshaker", "Ganesha", "Bebop Buffet", and "South 21st Shuffle". LP, Vinyl record album
(Shrinkwrap has a vintage price sticker on front and a large hole in back.)
