✨✧ Santiago (Neftali Santiago)22 Somerset Drive – 1976 to 1978 ... CD
Manufactured, Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Never-heard work from drummer Neftali Santiago – one of the founding forces of legendary funk group Mandrill – working here alone in the mid 70s, during a time when he was taking a break from the group! The music is fantastic – the best sort of 70s funk ensemble mode – maybe in the manner of Fatback Band on their earliest records, especially in the sharpness of the basslines and drums – mixed with some of that warmer, more spiritual glow that you'd find on the first two Mandrill albums for Polydor. Neftali sings on many cuts, but also really kicks it out of the park with his work on drums – heading up a few different groups here, with instrumentation that includes sax, flute, clavinet, and even a bit of minimoog. These are all unreleased tracks, but they've got a very fully-formed sound – and the whole album is a great testament to Santiago's genius, in a way that really has us underscoring his contributions to Mandrill! Titles include "Land Of The Leaping No No", "Feelin Good", "Bionic Funk", "Alone Together", "Freakin", "To & From Gamma 4", "Set It Free", "Let Out Your Beats", and "Everybody Hears But Nobody Listens". Eddie BertLike Cool – The Contemporary Trombone Artistry Of Eddie Bert (aka Let's Dig Bert) ... LP
Somerset, Early 60s. Very Good ... $9.99
A nice little album that features some of Eddie Bert's best work as a leader – a set with some sharp modern tones and a very cool feel overall! The outing's a strong small combo one – with Bert in lead on trombone, plus tenor by Dave Schildkraut, guitar by Barry Gailbraith, piano by Hank Jones, and drums by Osie Johnson. Tracks are more open than you'd expect – with lots of great blowing by Bert in that dark moody mode he worked on with Mingus. Schildkraut's sax is very nice, too – and tracks include "Blue Beetle Original", "Father Time", "Cool School Days", "Home Cookin", and "Speedster". LP, Vinyl record album

MustangOrgan Freakout – A Happening With The Mustang ... LP
Somerset, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A great little album – even if it tries to promise too much! The set bills itself as "the swinginest Hammond organ album since the birth of psychedelia" – and while that sort of a claim is so high that nobody could ever match it, the album is a great batch of offbeat soul instrumentals – recorded in kind of a tripped-out take on the Memphis groove! We're not sure who the mysterious "Mustang" is (although it could be Paul Griffin, who also recorded for the same label in a similar mode) – but we're guessing here that the name is also used to convey the fact that many of the tunes have a "Mustang Sally" sort of rhythm. Backing is in a hip small combo mode – with nice go-go drums, tight rhythm guitar, and soulful honking sax behind the organ – and although the sound is more straight soul instrumentals, the titles are nicely tripped-out – and include "The Acid Test", "California Time", "Joshua Got Busted", "Haight Ashbury Time", "Swing Low Sweet Truth", and "Golden Gate Freakout". Marco RizoBossa Nova – Brazilian Jazz ... LP
Somerset, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $1.99
Rizo was one of many American Latin pianists who tried to cash in on the bossa craze in the early 60s – but like so many others, his style is much more steeped in Latin playing, with a much heavier sound than some of the Brazilian keyboardists who were the true geniuses of bossa. Still not bad if you dig easy grooves – and tracks include "Desafinado", "Lucy Bossa", "Chit Chat", "Rio Bossa", and "Chopin Goes To Rio". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a center split bottom seam.)

✨✧ Animated EggAnimated Egg (180 gram orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Somerset/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Freaky fuzzy guitars from the great Jerry Cole – working here under the name of The Animated Egg – not a real group, but a one-off studio project – yet one that is filled with plenty of great guitar, and some surprising rock funk grooves! The music is much trippier than Jerry's famous surf work – more fuzz on the amps, and a romping sort of rhythm that often takes these tunes right into Cherrystones funky rock territory, which is always treat for ears like ours – and the music veers between hard 60s instrumentals and modder Now Sound territory – thanks to some burning organ alongside the tight guitar and drums! Titles include "Sock It My Way", "Sippin & Trippin", "Dark", "Down Down & Gone", "Tomorrow", "Sur Listic", "I Said She Said Ah Cid", and "A Love Built On Sand". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limite numbered pressing of 750 copies!)
