Eddie BertLike Cool – The Contemporary Trombone Artistry Of Eddie Bert (aka Let's Dig Bert) ... LP
Somerset, Early 60s. Very Good ... $9.99
A nice little album that features some of Eddie Bert's best work as a leader – a set with some sharp modern tones and a very cool feel overall! The outing's a strong small combo one – with Bert in lead on trombone, plus tenor by Dave Schildkraut, guitar by Barry Gailbraith, piano by Hank Jones, and drums by Osie Johnson. Tracks are more open than you'd expect – with lots of great blowing by Bert in that dark moody mode he worked on with Mingus. Schildkraut's sax is very nice, too – and tracks include "Blue Beetle Original", "Father Time", "Cool School Days", "Home Cookin", and "Speedster". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a small X in marker on one corner.)

Pete TerraceKing Of The Boogaloo ... LP
Somerset, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
Pete Terrace challenges Pete Rodriguez for the title of "King Of The Boogaloo" in this live set recorded at Chez Jose in New York! The album's got a few tracks that say boogaloo, but which aren't – but that's still ok with us, because the bulk of the set is a hard grooving batch of uptempo groovers that would make anyone proud – and the record's easily one of Pete's best from the 60s! Includes covers of "El Pito", "At The Party", and "Bang Bang" – plus Marty Sheller-penned originals like "Do The Boogaloo", "I'm Gonna Make It", "Here Comes Pete", and "No! No! No!". Pete's vibes sound mighty nice, and the pianist in the group is nice and firey! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Marco RizoBossa Nova – Brazilian Jazz ... LP
Somerset, Early 60s. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rizo was one of many American Latin pianists who tried to cash in on the bossa craze in the early 60s – but like so many others, his style is much more steeped in Latin playing, with a much heavier sound than some of the Brazilian keyboardists who were the true geniuses of bossa. Still not bad if you dig easy grooves – and tracks include "Desafinado", "Lucy Bossa", "Chit Chat", "Rio Bossa", and "Chopin Goes To Rio". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a center split bottom seam.)

✨✧ Dennis YoungPrimitive Substance ... CD
Athens Of The North (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
That's drummer Dennis Young on the cover – looking as he might when he was a key member of Liquid Liquid – that killer New York underground group from the early 80s, whose complex funky rhythms were a big part of that scene at the time! Dennis here is working from the years after that group – on a host of much more obscure recordings that continue the mix of electric and acoustic elements that made Liquid Liquid so great – all with Young on a great range of percussion, with additional help on keyboards, guitar, bass, and other instrumental elements. Most tracks are instrumental, a few have never been released, and the whole thing feels a lot like the sound of Liquid Liquid, had they kept on going to the other half of the 80s – on titles that include "Berlin", "Safari Western", "Somerset Hills", "Volcano Cathedral", "You Turn Me On", "Tarzan Meets Jane", "Primitive Substance", and "Montezuma". ✨✧ Johnny DankworthFive Steps To Dankworth ... LP
Verve, 1957. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An early gem from Johnny Dankworth – the hard-swinging British arranger who'd release some great work on these shores in the 60s! Five Steps To Jazzis- slightly unusual in that all of the arrangements (and most compositions) are by Dankworth, but half of them are played by the Laurie Monk Quartet and Dickie Hawdon Quintet – and not Johnny's own group! The larger Dankworth ensemble is full on horns, and heavy on rhythm – a tightly-swinging large group that's one of the best manifestations of the big band in the post-swing era of the time. Monk's group has a smaller, intimate feel that's heavy on Laurie's trombone and Johnny Dankworth's alto – and Dickie Hawdon's combo features some great sax work from Dankworth himself. Titles include "One For Janet", "Somerset Morn", "Horoscope", "Somebody Loves Me", "Export Blues", and "Magenta Midget". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono blue label pressing with deep groove. Cover is stained on the bottom half, with peeled spots on front and back.)

✨✧ James MoodyJames Moody With Strings ... LP
Argo, 1960. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A rare setting for Moody – a player who rarely cut sides with larger backing, but who sounds really wonderful here! The album's got Moody blowing mostly alto, and a bit of flute – over large backings by Torrie Zito that feature equal parts strings and woodwinds – conducted in a way that's got the same modern touches as the best Verve "with strings" work from the 50s, but which also shares some of the boozier, more mature touches that Zito brought to his work for vocalists in the 60s. There's a sad, languid feel to the record that's emotively redeemed by Moody's soulful and contemplative solo work – breaking out nicely on titles that include Zito originals "Somerset", "Another Day", "Dorothee", "A Song Of Love", and "Dorian Mood" – plus versions of "I Remember Clifford", "Love For Sale", and "All My Life". LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange label Cadet pressing. Cover has a cut corner.)
