A wonderful, wonderful, wonderful "new thing" jazz session from Blue Note – and proof that the avant garde in the 60s didn't necessarily have to resort to blowing their heads off to make fantastic music! Trombonist Grachan Moncur III organized the session – but like other key Blue Note dates of this type, including work from Tony Williams and Jackie McLean, the album's a very evenly-weighted date that features equal contributions from all members involved! Four albums that show the continuing evolution of Earl Scruggs in the 70s – with a sound that's very different than his earlier music, and maybe even sharper instrumentation overall! First up is I Saw The Light – a record made after the famous banjo pioneer split with Lester Flatt, and was very popular with a young rock crowd – as evidenced by help he gets here from Linda Ronstadt and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – not to mention Gary and Randy Scruggs, Vassar Clements, and Norman Blake! The mix of famous names and the growing Scruggs Review sound is great – and the record is an unlikely but important entry in the rise of country rock during the early 70s, with a very different quality than some of Earl's earlier work. We might well thank the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – as the vibe is similar at times to their shifting music of the period – mixed with some Mike Nesmith inspiration, as a few of his tunes are included. Titles include "Lonesome & A Long Way From Home", "Silver Wings", "Never Ending Song Of Love", "Rock Sant & Nails", "Some Of Shelly's Blues", "It's A Picture From Life's Other Side", and "Propinquity". On Live From Austin City Limits, the great Earl Scruggs takes on the growing Austin scene – which turns out to be a perfect fit for his Revue's blend of new country modes and older styles of instrumentation! Earl leads off the set with stunning work on banjo – maybe even sharper than earlier years – and the group lead off with some Dylan material at the start, showcasing some of their rock leanings – but soon bringing on other songs of their own, and making for this beautiful mix of key instrumental moments and lyrical passages. Lead vocals are from Gary Scruggs, and Randy and Steve Scruggs are in the group too – on titles that include "Nashville Skyline Rag", "I Shall Be Released", "Tall Texas Woman", "I Just Can't Seem To Change", "Black Mountain Blues", "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven", and "The Swimming Song". Strike Anywhere is a mighty nice album from the great Earl Scruggs – recorded with his boys' Revue group, and a sound that really helps keep Earl's instrumentation fresh for the 70s! Years back, we never would have thought that mixing the legendary Scruggs banjo sound with keyboards would have worked – but the change here is a great one, as Earl makes the shift that a few of his traditional instrumental contemporaries were doing at the time – such as Vassar Clements or Bashful Brother Oswald – finding a new setting for the instruments that still shine out in the lead at all the best moments. Titles include a great remake of "Mandolin Wind" – plus "Muhammad Ali", "Bring It On Home To Me", "You Really Got A Hold On Me", "I Think Of You", and "Dreaming As One". On Bold & New, the great Chips Moman produced and recorded the record – a set that shows that move that Earl had made into country rock during the decade, delivered in the best possible hands! Vocals are from some of Earl's sons, and the man himself still gets gets in plenty of banjo solos too – as the group mix their own material with a few from Bobby Emmons, who plays organ, electric piano, and clavinet on the set. Titles include "The Cabin", "Our Love Is Home Grown", "That's Alright Mama", "Found Myself A New Love", "Games People Play", "Take The Time To Fall In Love", and "Louisiana Lady". CD

Never-heard studio work from the great Bill Evans – not another one of those many (and great) live performances from overseas – but a well-conceived, beautifully recorded set of tracks that were done for MPS Records in their famous studios in the Black Forest! The group here is Evans sublime trio with the great Eddie Gomez on bass and a young Jack DeJohnette on drums – perfect players for completely reworking the sound of the jazz piano trio, with all the new ideas that Bill had bursting forth at the time – and this material is the only studio session by the group, recorded right after their famous live appearance at Montreux in 1968 (documented on a well-known album on Verve.) The set's a double-length outing – recorded with the kind of crisp, clear sound that MPS brought to its other classic piano albums of the time by artists like Hampton Hawes or Tete Montoliu. The whole thing's wonderful – and Gomez has a wonderful presence in the mix – as the trio really shines on titles that include "Wonder Why", "Green Dolphin Street", "These Foolish Things", "Walkin Up", "Turn Out The Stars", "Very Early", "You Go To My Head", "Lover Man", and "Baubles Bangles & Beads". Beautifully choppy jazz from Steve Grossman and his legendary 70s comrades Gene Perla and Don Alias – one of the heaviest hitting American combos of the time! The trio have a tight fusion sound that's as full-on as it is funky – and Grossman blows some amazing work on tenor and soprano sax that cut into the tunes with a really fierce bite – while Perla delivers these round, powerful basslines – and Don Alias alternates between free percussion and some driving funky drums! For this session, the group's joined by Jan Hammer on electric piano and moog, playing in a nicely restrained fashion that's not nearly as overblown as his later work, and which jams into the groove just perfectly – making for a sweet electric set that's a real standout of the 70s. Povel's got a nice edge in his horn at times – a mode that's always inside, but often sharply spoken – even when he's going for some mellower moments too – a bit of old school bite in the way he approaches the reed, maybe – and a definite sense of attack that really comes on when he's in a more swinging mode! The group here has some great guitar from Wim Overgaauw, whose ringing tones bring a bright balance between Povel's horn and the piano of Frans Elsen – and the rest of the group features Victor Kaihatu on bass and Ruud Pronk on drums. Some Other Blues features great work as a leader from reedman Ferdinand Povel – a player who's sparked up some great moments on albums by other players over the years, but who hardly ever records as a boss on his own! Good Bait is a live album, and one that features the twin-tenor leadership of Ferdinand Povel and Pete Christlieb – both excellent soloists who get plenty of room here to really stretch out and soar! In some ways, Maki might be said to be one of the original goths in music – but with her longer legacy, and varied roots, that sort of a tag would only be reductive –as you'll hear on this set. One of the most soulful records ever recorded by Joe Bataan – a sweet blend of harmony soul and east coast styles, done in a mode that's a bit less Latin than some of his earlier records – but really wonderful overall! The style here is almost late 60s Philly soul – particularly that of the Intruders, O'Jays, or other harmony-heavy groups – and the production has a rootsy edge that really gets at the honesty in Joe's approach. And given Joe's wonderful approach to these heartfelt tunes, we hardly miss the Latin rhythms at all – as we're really in love with his soul tunes here! A great move in a fresh direction for the Flaming Groovies – a set that has the group working with producer Dave Edmunds, and hitting this sweet power pop sort of sound! The Groovies still have all the tight energy of before – but they also seem to be paying tribute to an older vintage of British material – as evidenced by their 60s look on the cover, and the album's back cover parody of a stance by The Beatles! The short tracks are plenty tuneful, and Edmunds has a way of compressing the fuzz down tightly, but never in a way that makes things sound slick or commercial. We don't know much about Harris, but he's got a freewheeling spiritual sound that's very much in the Coltrane-inspired mode, yet also steeped in the creative improvised style of Tapscott's scene in LA. Tracks are all long, with a sound that builds majestically over time – and the set leaves us wondering why Harris wasn't a bigger player at the time. The core tracks of the CD were recorded in the studio – with Tapscott, Harris, and added bass, percussion, and guest vocals by the enigmatic Lorelei. An additional longer track was recorded live, with a larger group that also includes Adele Sebastian on flute and Sabia Mateen on tenor. And a last track is an 8 minute solo piano number by Tapscott. A nice little funk album from Eddie – one that shouldn't work, but does nicely, thanks to a unique approach to the groove! Eddie's still playing plenty of electric sax on the set – and is going for a sound here that's equal parts soul jazz, modal groove, and down and dirty funk! The album kicks off with the catchy vocal number "I Need Some Money", which features a chugging Varitone groove in the background. Other cuts mix up funk and soul, and add in touches of the "electric rhythm machine", which was heard on a few earlier Harris albums for Atlantic. Very strange, but strangely nice – and with the cuts "Bumpin", "Get On Down", "Carnival", "That's It", and "Time To Do Your Thing". CD

Leon Haywood's best album from the 70s! After working as a keyboardist and sometimes vocalist for a number of years – making some strong and some tentative entries into the soul genre – Leon really exploded with this album, an electric funk classic that gave the world his fantastic "I Wanna Do Something Freaky To You" (a track that had new life years later when Dr Dre sampled it to great fame.) The rest of the record holds up nicely, too – and is a mix of smooth soul and wicked funk, with tracks that include "Consider the Source", "Who You Been Giving It Up To", and "This Feeling's Rated Extra". An album that's way better than you might expect – not the easy cash-in on the film Some Like It Hot that's telegraphed by the cover – but instead a tight trad jazz date by trombonist Lou McGarity – done in some of the same mature modes as Jack Teagarden's work from the same time! The group's a quintet, with lots of room for Lou's bold solos in the lead – and other players include Dick Cary on trumpet and piano, Jack Lesberg on bass, George Barnes on guitar, and Don Marino on drums. Barnes provides a nice link between classic and modern styles – and titles include "Runnin wild", "La Cumparasita", "I'm Thru With Love", "Sugar Blues", "Sweet Sue Just You", and "Stairway To The Stars". A wonderful, smooth jazzy number from Sade's beautiful Stronger Than Pride album, one that we always treated as a guilty pleasure, though looking back we don't know why we felt guilty about it – we certainly don't now! The remix is not the sort of radical reworking you'd expect today, just some tweaking to make the cut hit a little more on a big PA, while the extended mix of "Make Some Room" on the b-side draws out the nice instrumental groove just enough to keep us satisfied. 12-inch, Vinyl record

A date recorded in 1980, with an equally laidback feel as some of the earlier Ann Burton albums from the 70s! Burton's singing with only bass and piano for accompaniment – no drums at all, which makes for a very gentle, laidback sound – a perfect showcase for Ann's unique talents. Given that Burton was easily one of the most sensitive singers of the 70s, the lack of instrumentation is hardly a challenge – as she makes things swing beautifully all on her own, even when mellow – and has this way of holding rapt attention without any need for other instrumentation. While little of Clinton's work under his own name in the 80s compares favorably with the best of the Parliament-Funkadelic years, it's still fairly solid compared to a lot of the other commercial R&B dreck that was being peddled at the time. With the sort of fat bass, loads of synthesized keyboards and brittle drum machine sounds that were stock in trade during that era, but an undeniable groove running throughout most of the tunes, like "Double Oh Oh", "Bulletproof", "Bodyguard" and "Some Of My Best Jokes Are Friends". A pretty amazing setting for this quintet of top-shelf improvisers – artists who find a way to spin things out in a long creative performance that spans almost two hours in length – always finding a way to make our ears smile with a sense of surprise at all the different moments of inspiration! Perhaps the most unique artist here is singer Elaine Mitchener – who has a way of improvising all these non-verbal sounds that come into play strongly with the mad percussive skills of Hamid Drake, and the always-beautiful bass of William Parker. Pat Thomas handles his piano with a balance of sensitivity and strength, and the marimba of Orphy Robinson comes in at moments that seem to explode with fresh color and sound. Both Robinson and Thomas bring in a bit of electronics, and Parker plays a bit of guimbri too – and the set features two very long sections, titled "Put The Breaks On" and "Some Good News". CD
