SmokeRisin' ... LP
J.Bridge/P-Vine (Japan), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 39.99
A great record – and the kind of lost soul that has group collectors digging through the used bins year after year! Smoke hailed from Kansas City, and they were sweet harmony group in the mode of many of their east coast contemporaries. The record was recorded in 1976, but has a sound that's more 1972 or 1973 – with some uptempo righteous cuts, and some heavenly floating ballads that really hit the best sort of group soul harmony heaven! The record appears to have been recorded in Chicago – as the engineer is Paul Serrano, and the arrangements were handled by Benjamin Wright. Tracks include "I Can Feel Your Love (Comin' Down On Me)", "Cream Of The Crop", "I'm So Lonely", "Have I Really Lost You", and "Don't Take Your Love". A smooth groove classic through and through! ✨✧ Smoke CityI Really Want You ... LP
Epic, 1985. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A damn great bit of 80s soul – the only album ever issued by Smoke City, but a killer set that we've loved for many years – especially given the group's link to the Chicago scene! The set's perfectly put together – head and shoulders above so much other major label soul of the time – with a mature, sophisticated groove that's really wonderful – almost an extension of the styles explored by Philly International at the start of the 80s, taken forward at a time when so many others were amping up their drum machines and going for too-commercial riffs in their grooves. The vocals alternate nicely between lead male singer Daveon Overton and female singer Starr – and the album also alternates between 80s groove, quiet storm numbers, and even a few slyly jazzy numbers that are perfect for the hipper side of the mainstream soul spectrum at the time. Titles include "Dreams", "Life Of the Party", "Time To Jam", "Back Seat Kind Of Girl", "In The World Of Fantasy", and "Cafe Francois". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Smoke (aka Black Smoke)Smoke ... CD
Chocolate City/Universal (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really great little funky record – even if it's a bit of a mystery in the record racks at times! This group were one of a number to use the name Smoke during the 70s – but at some point they were forced to change their name to Black Smoke, and you'll see the record listed both ways, but with the same cover. The band's a mixed ensemble of funk players – and they've got a sound that begins with a bass-heavy Average White Band groove, but moves into some more sophisticated playing with plenty of jazz funk touches. No surprise that the album's produced by Wayne Henderson, who handled some of the best jazz funk of the 70s – and in a way, the group probably sounds more like Pleasure (who Henderson also produced) than anyone else. The album features the extremely catchy soul tune "What Goes Around Comes Around", which has sweet ensemble vocals riffing along in a jazzy groove – plus the tracks "Screamin", "There It Is", "Freedom Of The Mind", and "Turn This Thing Around". Epic, 1985. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A smooth mellow stepper from Smoke City – taken at a fairly slow pace, with washes of keyboards and some nice acoustic piano lines over the top, almost as an extension of a late Barry White mode, but less heavy on the beats. The vocal track's a great ballad, the sort that's perfect to play at the end of a late-nite set, or to kick off a mellow one! 12-inch, Vinyl record

RCA, 1962. Very Good ... $4.99
Elmer Bernstein handled the score for this steamy Hal Wallis romance film from the early 60s, based on a play by Tennessee Williams. The whole thing's fairly orchestral, with occasional breakaway instrumental touches designed to convey a slight feeling of "rural" or "southern" themes – and titles include "Degeneration", "Rosa's Dance", "John's Patient", "Glorious Hill Waltz", and "Two Lonely Women". Big Star#1 Record (purple & gold smoke vinyl pressing) ... LP
Ardent/Craft, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99 32.99 On December 9, 2022
The amazing first album from Big Star – a set that came out of nowhere, made hardly a ripple on the charts, yet went onto crash in big waves of sound for generations to come! The style here is unlike thing else before – hardly what you'd expect from the group's Memphis roots or Alex Chilton's previous performances – yet the group's music has become a generation-defining sound in the way it blends southern inflections with harder rock influences, and a lean, gritty quality that's arguably in a late 70s space between punk and power pop. Every element is wonderful – guitars that are powerful, but never indulgent – vocals that are moving, but never overly emotive – and a balance between sensitive and searing moments that even The Replacements could never hope to match. A landmark all the way through – with tracks that include "Feel", "Ballad Of El Goodo", "In The Street", "The India Song", "When My Baby's Beside Me", "Give Me Another Chance", "Don't Lie To Me", "Thirteen", "Watch The Sunrise", and "Try Again". Not just a wonderful letter, but a love letter to Los Angeles – served up here in a style that maybe makes for one of the most evocative creations we've ever heard from J Rocc! There's a richness here that comes through on the very first track – almost an imagined LA from the past, at a time when the city had a few more problems – but given more than a few contemporary touches along the way, especially when some of the guests step into the mix – work from Koreatown Oddity, Med, Frank Nitt, Budgie, LMNO, and Key Kool – as well as older legends Steve Arrington and Egyptian Lover – whose appearance here really cements some of the 80s elements in J Rocc's conception. Titles include "LA Anthem", "Love & Dope", "Dancing With The Best", "All I Wanna Do (rmx)", "The Changing World", and "Flawless". LP, Vinyl record album

Harold MabernIron Man – Live At Smoke ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2019. New Copy 2CDs ... $16.99 18.99
Pianist Harold Mabern works here with a trio of players who really helped him find new focus and energy in later years – the great Eric Alexander on tenor, with John Webber on bass and Joe Farnsworth on drums – a rock-solid lineup who really take off here in a live date from New York's Smoke nightclub! Tracks are all long, and have that solid, soaring sense of groove that always marked Mabern in his early years – but which was lost a bit in the 80s and 90s, until he teamed up with Alexander – and found the kind of inspiration that's returned him to greatness for most of the last 20 years! The songs are straightforward, but filled with searing solos – and with Webber and Farnsworth on hand, things keep swinging in all the right ways. Alexander himself seems to have unlocked a whole new corner of his talents in recent years – very much on display here – and titles include "A Few Miles From Memphis", "Nightlife In Tokyo", "She's Out Of My Life", "Mr PC", "On A Clear Day", "Rakin & Scrapin", "T Bone Steak", and "I Know That You Know". Prodigy's solo debut HNIC – gritty and raw from intro to outro, with a methodical flow on par the with the best of his work with Mobb Deep in the best moments – while taking stylistic detours! Naturally, there's a personal vibe to the peak tracks here that he couldn't explore so singularly on rhymes in the Mobb Deep canon, but there's some less personal, more boisterous bangers here too. Stands the test of time pretty strongly production wise, too. Includes the classic "Keep It Thoro", "Wanna Be Thugs", "Infamous Minded", "Trials Of Love", "What U Rep", "YBE", "Three", "Can't Complain" and more, plus guest appearances by Havoc, Big Noyd, Cormega and production on a few tracks by Alchemist. ✨✧ Jaki ByardBlues For Smoke ... CD
Candid/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1960. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very unusual early album from piano genius Jaki Byard – recorded right around the same time as his initial albums for Prestige, and his big breakthrough with Charles Mingus! The set is all solo, recorded during that legendary short span of recordings by Candid Records in Nola Penthouse – and Byard is completely on fire, maybe showing a pianistic dexterity and command of the history of jazz that wouldn't burst forth on other records until the end of the decade! Jaki wrote all the material himself – and seems to embrace a range of expression that runs from Jelly Roll Morton up through Mal Waldron – then filtered and focused brilliantly through his godlike fingertips. Titles include "Hollis Stomp (Mr Piano Man)", "Flight OF The Fly", "Aluminum Baby", "One Two Five", Dian's Melody", and "Jaki's Blues Next". CD

Rustblade (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A very spooky score for this film that's also known in America as "The Cat With Nine Tails" – the second collaboration between Ennio Morricone and noted horror director Dario Argento! The album's a bit different than some of Morricone's other work on horror films – and at times, it almost has qualities that sound more like a western – a spacious mix of light strings and more sparely focused instrumentation – sometimes a bassline, sometimes a bit of flute. Other numbers get a bit more dark and jagged – slightly atonal, with shimmering, shifting styles that create a tremendous amount of tension! Titles include "Paranoia Prima", "1970", "Sottintesi", "Ninna Nanna In Blu", "Placcaggio", and "Metafora Finale". LP, Vinyl record album

Warlock/Idlers, 1988. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic set from the late 80s – one of the first records to really herald the new generation to come with De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest – served up by Native Tongues partners The Jungle Brothers! While this set never got the major label push that debuts by the other groups would have, the set was an instant sensation in the world of hip hop – the start of a new level of wit and wisdom – urban sensibility able to look back at itself, almost a postmodern commentary on the then-short history of hip hop! Production is great – and the JBs not only reworked use of classic samples, but also added a newly jazzy sensibility – on titles that include "On the Run", "Straight Out the Jungle", "Black Is Black", "Braggin & Boastin", "Behind The Bush", "Because I Got It Like That", and the classic "Jimbrownski". Nicholas Payton shines in two different ways here – blowing trumpet, and handling piano and Fender Rhodes – often overdubbed, but with a unified sound that makes the album sound wonderful throughout! Part of the strength of the set is the rhythm backing – as Payton works with help from bassist Ron Carter, a player he'd always dreamed of recording with – alongside more regular drummer Karrie Riggins, who fits into the trio with a really magical sense of energy. Tenorist George Coleman joins the group on two tracks – partly as a nod to the Miles Davis album Four & More, which was some of the inspiration for the sound of this set – and titles include "Gold Dust Black Magic", "Q For Quincy Jones", "Big George", "Hangin In & Jivin", "Levin's Ope", "No Lonely Nights", "Big George", and "Lullaby For A Lamppost". ✨✧ Marty RobbinsGunfighter Ballads & Trail Songs (clear with black smoke swirl vinyl pressing) ... LP
Columbia/Real Gone, 1959. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The great Marty Robbins did plenty of things in his many years with Columbia Records – music from straight country, to Hawaiian tunes, to crossover pop – yet the singer will forever be known for his western-themed songs – and in particular, this classic collection of tracks! Robbins has a voice that's amazing – deep and rich, and instantly able to open up your ears – a quality that makes him instantly narrative, which really suits the spirit of this material wonderfully – as Marty delivers these tunes that evoke the old west, but in the style of a postwar western – more Gunsmoke than the real thing – but that's the charm of the whole record too! The set's one of the key classics in the run of Columbia Records material from the time – not hard country, certainly – but an undeniably influential record – thanks in part to the huge crossover hit "El Paso", nestled here next to other gems that include "Big Iron", "Cold Water", "Running Gun", and "In The Valley". Soave (Italy), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really wild bit of sound library work from this Italian duo – a set that almost feels more like an experimental radio art piece than the usual sorts of records from the scene – given the advanced use of electronics, and the mixture of spoken parts with very offbeat sounds! Most of the work comes from an Arp 2600, electric piano, and Eminent Organ – handled by Giombini – mixed with some slight classical guitar, but which is layered in the larger sonic landscape, which is often quite processed and abstracted – mixed with some spoken bits that move in and out of the mix. The whole thing works best as a whole – but individual passages include "La Terra", "Transvita Express", "La Stazione", "La Partenza", "Termina", "L'Annuncio", and "Fuori". LP, Vinyl record album

Titles include "Halloween" and "1997 Escape From New York" by Claudio Simonetti, "Night" by Mythical Vigilante, "Matthew Ghost Story" by Leather Strip, "Assault On Precinct 13" by Code Elektro, "The Fog" by Motion Kapture, and "The Thing" by Tibia. The group here is heavy on horns – two trumpets, two trombones, alto and tenor – shifting a bit throughout the concert here, and really rising wonderfully from the energy that Evans brings on piano! The group's a quartet – with Cyrus Chestnut on piano, Yasushi Nakamura on bass, and Johnathan Blake on drums – instantly hitting that kind of a groove that really makes Herring sound his best – a level of accompaniment he doesn't always get on record – but when he does, on a set like this, it reminds us all over again how much we can love his music when it finds the right sound! Harold MabernMabern Plays Coltrane ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 17.99
One of the most soulful records we've heard in years from the late pianist Harold Mabern – and that's saying a hell of a lot, as Harold gave us plenty of soulful sets during his many years on the planet! The record is as fantastic as you might guess from the title – as Mabern takes on tunes made famous by John Coltrane, but delivers the goods in this soaring style that's very much his own – and maybe most specifically, at a level that recalls the vibe he first hit in the 60s when playing with Lee Morgan, and then took to even newer heights on some of his fantastic 70s material – particularly recordings with reedman Frank Strozier! Here, the reeds are handled by Eric Alexander on tenor and Vincent Herring on alto – a hell of a pair – and the group also features really strong work from Steve Davis on trombone, who's really at the top of his game throughout. The rest of the group feature the familiar team of John Webber on bass and Joe Farnsworth on drums – both also really rising to the occasion – and although we'll not be hearing much from Mabern in years to come, this set is a hell of a farewell. Titles include "Impressions", "Blue Train", "Naima", "Straight Street", "My Favorite Things", and "Dahomey Dance". CD

The great Harold Mabern kicks it hard with a key core group – then finds a way to open up with some surprise guest artists as well – including singers Gregory Porter, Kurt Elling, Jane Monheit, and Norah Jones! The core of the album features Mabern's piano rocketing out with rhythm from John Webber on bass and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and getting some strong tenor work from the mighty Eric Alexander – and as the set goes on, the group also brings in Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and Steve Turre on trombone. But the key force here is the singers – especially Porter and Elling, who seem to find an old school space with the group that really takes them back to their roots. Elling sings on "You Needed Me", "Portrait Of Jennie", and "Billie's Bounce"'; Porter sings on "Afro Blue" and "The Man From Hyde Park"; Monheit sings on "I'll Take Romance" and "My One & Only Love"; and Norah Jones sings on "Don't Misunderstand" and "Fools Rush In". If you dig The Meters, you'll no doubt recognize most of the tunes – but you've probably never heard them in these versions before – as most of them are pulled from the farthest reaches of the 60s and 70s funky underground! Most numbers change things up a bit in terms of instrumentation – using a guitar where you might normally hear an organ, tipping the rhythm a bit more towards one speed or another – but all of them continue strongly that chunky, gritty approach to instrumental funk the New Orleans combo first forged in the late 60s – a legacy that still lives on in lots of current work, but which sounds even fresher in these rare gems from years back. There's also a few original compositions by some of these artists, but they're all tunes that fall strongly within a classic Meters groove – and titles include "Cissy Strut" by Rod Piazza, "Flight Of The Phoenix" by Dennis The Fox, "Slot Machine" by Duke Of Burlington, "Cissy Strut" by King Herbert & The Knights, "Cardova" by Syd Jones & The Gay Troubadours, "The Cissy's Thang" by The Soul Seven, "Look Ka Py Py" by The Invaders, "Chicken Strut" by King Herbert & The Knights, "Madrox" by Big Band Katouuice, "Cissy Strut" by Sacramento Senior High School, "Big Splash" by Band It, and "Soul Heart Transplant" by Ebony Rhythm Band. Le Smoke Disque, 1970s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Funky stuff inspired by the deepest, funkiest Kool & The Gang work of the 70s – a set weighed heavily with real obscurities – with furiously grooving jazzy bits, grainy hard soul versions, steel band numbers and more – all massively funky in their unique strains of the sound! Much like the other comps in the Le Smoke Disque tributes to classic funk figures, the really dig deep – with material from rare regional funk singles, cover versions, and tribute tracks from regions as far apart as the midwestern US, Mexico, Brazil, Thailand and well beyond. The regional sounds are certainly big factors, the the groove is ultimately pretty faithful to the Kool funk sound – amazing stuff! Includes "You Best Give It Up" by Jessie & The Mel O Tones, "Who's Gonna Take The Weight?" by Cane & Able, "Kool Is Back" by La Mars, "Lose Pelos Tiesos" by Rabbits & Carrots, "Funky Granny" by Everyday People, "Jammin With Shorty" (Parts A & B) by Shorty And The Junior Kools, "Give It Up" by The Impossibles, "Funky Stuff" by the Dutch Rhythm Steel And Show Band, "Kool And The Gang" by Tyree Glenn, Jr & Brain Damage, and more. Le Smoke Disque, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Wickedly funky reworks of classics by Sly & The Family Stone – most of which are harder-hitting than the famous original versions! The package is a great assemblage of lesser-known cover versions – many of which are done in rough-edged, deep funk modes – not just by American groups, but from artists around the globe – showing the far far reach of Sly's music, even in the early days! The language is sometimes changed in the lyrics, but the grooves are totally universal – the chopped-up funk that Sly Stone and the Family cooked up in the SF scene of the late 60s – served up here in a wide variety of groovy new versions. Titles include "Sing A Simple Song" by Tomorrow's Children, "Thank You (extended album version)" by Kashmere Stage Band, "Stand" by He 6, "Thank You" by Blue Star Gang, "Everyday People" by Sacramento Senior High School 1970, "Family Affair" by Jimmy Stone, "Remember Who You Are" by Breakestra, "Are You Ready" by LA Carnival, "Loose Booty" by Horizons High School Band, "Sing A Simple Song' by Donald Seward, "Messin With Sly" by Hot Chocolate, and "I Want To Take You Higher" by Gougoush. Smoke Sessions, 2021. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pianist Kevin Hays is the ersatz leader here, and also wrote almost all the tracks – but the set's a very well-rounded effort from every member of the trio, thanks to fantastic contributions from Ben Street on bass and Billy Hart on drums! There's a way that the bass rolls around the drums rolls around the piano on some tunes – that complexity that we've always loved in Hart's music, and the way that he can make it seem so simple and organic – pointed a bit more by some of Hays' work on the piano, while Street may well be working as the most understatedly powerful member of the session. There's a nicely mature, and maybe melancholy, sense to most of the tunes – and titles include "Elegia", "Twilight", "All Things Are", "New Day", and "Unscrappulous". CD

A heartbreakingly beautiful album from pianist Harold Mabern – a set that's already beautiful on its own, but which maybe moves us even more when we realize it's one of the last that Harold has ever given us! The set's recorded at the Smoke nightclub on the upper west side – and features fantastic energy from some familiar players who've worked with Mabern often, and who maybe even rise up in great spirits together – in a set that's an unintentional memorial to the wonderful music that all of them made together during the final decades of Harold's life! In addition to Mabern on piano, the group also features Eric Alexander on tenor, Vincent Herring on alto, Steve Davis on trombone, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and as you'd guess by the title, there's a fair bit of original Mabern compositions in the set – including "Mr Johnson", "Rakin & Scrapin", "The Beehive", "Edward Lee", and "The Lyrical Cole-Man". The sense of movement in the album's title is really well-put – as organist Larry Goldings has this effortless way of running up and down the keys of his instrument, and the bass pedals too – spinning things out in a really freewheeling style that's caught fire by the guitar of Peter Bernstein and drums of Bill Stewart! There's a very modern vibe to the whole thing – the album's not a set that's out to rehash a 60s soul jazz mode, but instead show that new expressions from a guitar/organ trio are alive and well – maybe no surprise, given the strength that both Goldings and Bernstein have given us over the years – although brought into even greater focus here. In addition to Davis on trombone, the group also features Steve Nelson on vibes, Peter Bernstein on guitar, Geoffrey Keezer on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Willie Jones III on drums – all strong leaders in their own right, coming together here as a beautifully cohesive unit to really spin some magic – energy that's tight on the leads, but breaks off nicely with strong solo voices that are never too overindulgent, but really make themselves heard. Any record from pianist Orrin Evans is worth of attention – but this set might be worthy of a bit more, given that it features some really beautiful work from alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins – a player who's a perfect accompaniment for all the great ideas that Evans brings to his music! Immanuel's horn has all these sharp edges – currents that really set him apart from the rest, and make his voice known instantly when he appears on the tunes – often set up with those darkly rich lines that Evans can cast so well in a small group setting, which he does here on tunes penned both by himself and Wilkins. The pairing is wonderful – and balanced with work from Vicente Archer on bass and Bill Stewart on drums – on long, fresh tunes that include "Momma Loves", "MAT Matt", "Libra", "The Poor Fisherman", "Levels", and "Dave". A rock-solid trio set from the great drummer Joe Farnsworth – one that draws every bit as much of its strength from the piano of Kenny Barron and bass of Peter Washington – both players who work together with Joe on a set of tunes that feel effortless, but which are filled with complex ideas and never-ending energy! A fair bit of tunes are originals by Barron or Farnsworth – tunes that partly stand as a tribute to New York as it wakes up from the dark days of 2020 – and there's this really positive spirit to the record that keeps on going all the way through, and which also transforms the standards as well. One of the best records yet from alto sax player Vincent Herring! He's working with a great group of players that includes Mike LeDonne on piano, Brandi Disterheft on bass, Joe Farnsworth on drums and the always great trumpeter Jeremy Pelt on this one. A tribute to the music of Charlie Parker – but a set that sparkles more from the individual inspiration of the three alto giants in the lead – a great lineup that features Gary Bartz, Bobby Watson, and Vincent Herring! The tracks are long, with great lead passages that have all three horns soaring together, then individual solos from each player – and although the songs include a number of classics from the Charlie Parker songbook, the album also features original tunes by Herring and Watson, and another by Jackie McLean – maybe marking the whole thing as being very much in the spirit of its title – a look back at a century that's felt the influence of Bird, with all the alto sax changes that have taken place in the time since his passing. The rhythm trio is excellent too – David Kikoski on piano, Yasushi Nakamura on bass, and Carl Allen on drums – and titles include "Bird-Ish", "Klactoveedsedstene", "The Hymn", "Folklore", "Bird Lives", and "Yardbird Suite". Bold, beautiful work from pianist Renee Rosnes – a player who's already been great for many decades, but who really seems to be unlocking new qualities in her music – and a record like this is definitely a piece of that trend! There's a richness of sound on the piano that's always marked Renee's approach to the keys – but there's also maybe more of a fuller group dynamic going on – maybe in part because the combo is so wonderful – with work from Christian McBride on bass, Carl Allen on drums, Rogerio Boccato on percussion, and Chris Potter on saxes, flutes, and bass clarinet! Boccato's percussion is subtle, but really does a lot to the rhythms – and in another standout element, Renee also picks up the Fender Rhodes on a few tunes too. Both of the Steves really open up the sound here – taking the music into deeper, more ambitious territory than usual for Renee – especially as the core of the album is built around the extended "Galapagos Suite", which features these patterns of shifting colors and shades that are especially great in the way they combine the piano and Nelson's vibes. Bobby Watson's always keeping it real in our book – as the alto saxophonist maybe hasn't made a bad record ever, and has continued to turn out the sort of fantastic music we loved right when he was an up-and-comer in an 80s version of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers! Here, Bobby's working with some key talents from his solo years – a re-formed New Horizon group that features excellent work on bass from Curtis Lundy, drums from Victor Jones, and piano from Victor Gould – plus trumpet work on some tracks by Josh Evans and on others by Giveton Gellin! The use of trumpet is somewhat striking, as it's an instrument that's not always in place on some of Bobby's small combo sessions – and both Evans and Gellin are clearly inspired by the warmth of the leader – as both soar out with a wonderfully full, rich sound that only adds to the classic soulful touch of Watson on the alto. Titles include Watson and Lundy originals "Keepin It Real", "One For John", "My Song", "The Mystery of Ebop", and "Elementary My Dear Watson 2020" – plus a nice take on the Donny Hathaway tune "Someday We'll All Be Free". The kind of overlooked, understated gem that should have put Badfinger at the top of the charts in the mid 70s – a record of impeccable songwriting, really great production, and a refinement of an earlier musical ideal that really points the way forward – all while avoiding most of the pitfalls of some of the group's UK contemporaries! There's a quality here that almost reminds us of the more straightforward elements of Wings, but with a rootsy vibe too – almost a bit like Little Feat, but definitely British in terms of the way the vocals come across. Johnny GriffinBlowing Session (aka Johnny Griffin Vol 2) (Non-RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1957. Used ... $6.99
A stellar early Johnny Griffin recording for Blue Note, and one that features him in a larger group with Hank Mobley, Lee Morgan, John Coltrane, and Wynton Kelly. As the "blowing session" title might imply, this set features long tracks that let the players get in plenty of soloing (and, we might add, in a very competitive way!) The record is similar to the Prestige sessions of the same vintage and style, but recorded with a little bit more of the care and rehearsal that Blue Note provided. Cuts include "Ball Bearing" and "Smoke Stack". CD

Blue Note, Late 50s/1975. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99 34.99
Excellent 2-fer that brings together 2 of the hardest hardbop albums ever to be recorded for Blue Note! The set includes Johnny Griffin, John Coltrane, and Hank Mobley jamming together on the classic Blowing Session LP (also known as Johnny Griffin, BN 1559); and it's also got John Gilmore and Clifford Jordan blowing hard on the classic Blowing In From Chicago. With Jordan, Gilmore, and Griffin all together here, the set's sort of a loving tribute to the great tenor sound of Chicago. The recording quality of both records is fantastic, and the tracks are all long drawn-out takes with lots of room for hard hard solos! Titles include "Evil Eye", "Everywhere", "Ball Bearing", and "Smoke Stack". LP, Vinyl record album

A hell of a record from Irreversible Entanglements – a group we already loved on previous records, but who really knock it out of the part with this fantastic set! The mix of modes here is a bit hard to put in words – as the group blend acoustic and electric elements in the best tradition of the International Anthem label, but also have a boldly spiritual presence that's all their own – given great focus by the voice of Camae Ayewa when she steps into the lead – but held equally strong in the instrumental moments too! Ohio PlayersFire ... LP
Mercury, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
One of the biggest albums ever for Ohio Players – a set that took their earlier funk sound and targeted firmly at the mainstream with a lean, mean groove that a million other groups copied at the time! There's still plenty of the soul of the early years in the group's approach here – and sometimes, the mellower tracks show a wonderful talent for harmonies coming even more fully to the top. But the real appeal of the record has always been the bold, bassy grooves that hit strongly just as ensemble funk was exploding in the mainstream during the early years of disco – making plenty of space for the Players and their contemporaries to grab up new audiences who never would have touched a record like this five years before! There's plenty of grit in the grooves on the best numbers – a style that's maybe not as dirty as on Westbound, but still more than enough to make any real funk fan proud. Titles include "Fire", "Together", "Together/Feelings", "It's All Over", "Runnin' From the Devil", "Smoke", "What The Hell", and "I Want To Be Free". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
Joyous grooves indeed – the second album by this legendary 70s jazzy soul outfit – and a landmark album in the Fantasy Records Bay Area funk mode! The record will forever be remembered for the cut "Joyous" – a monster groover with a killer hook, strong funky playing, and a searing tenor solo that wails for about a minute before the vocals even come in! Wayne Henderson produced the record – and it's very much in the mode of work that he was doing for other groups at Fantasy, but also sounds a bit like later jazz funk groups, such as Breakwater or Smoke – tight, but never uptight – funky, but never with the kind of grit you'd find in the indie underground. The vocals are a bit in the Average White Band mode, and the instrumental playing is top-shelf all the way – a monster mix that's possibly carried off better here than on any other album by the group! The album includes 2 instrumentals, "Selim" and "Sassafras Girl", as well as the vocal tracks "Tune In", "Let Me Be The One", and "Can't Turn You Loose". CD

An album with a cheesy sort of cover – one that almost looks like it's about to melt – and one that hides the great all-star talents within – a lineup that includes Alexis Corner on guitar, Jack Bruce on bass, and Charlie Watts on drums! Yet maybe even better than the non-rockers on the date – as the group also features tenor from Hal Singer and Don Weller, and piano from both Bob Hall and George Green – both of whom really smoke up the keys in a very old-school mode! Korner and Bruce each sing a bit on the set, but the main focus also seems to be in the mix of R&B and bluesy currents from all the instrumentalists – who also include Colin Smith on trumpet and John Picard on trombone. Titles include "Roadhouse Boogie", "Rocket 88", "Waiting For The Call", "St Louis Blues", and "Talking About Louise". CD

Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A trio of classic albums produced by Linval Thompson – with lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Linval's I Love Marijuana record – an album with a striking title – and a set that really marked the full promise of Linval Thompson in the 70s – a dubby classic that's every bit as strong on the vocal side of Thompson's skills, as it is the production side! The album was recorded at Tubby's with the Revolutionaries band and an uncredited Junjo Lawes (who would later go on to cut some of the best dub albums ever, with Scientist) – and the vocals have this great style of cresting between sweeter modes and more biting modes – particularly when wrapped around the social themes that always made Thompson stand out. Titles include "I Love Marijuana", "Don't Push Your Brother", "Dread Are the Controller", "The Children of the Ghetto", "Not Follow Fashion", and "Jamaican Colley Version". African Princess is a set that features great DJ vocals from Big Joe – one of the lesser-knowns of the time, but a voice that's perfect for the rich sense of flow that Linval Thompson brings to the production – on titles that include "African Princess", "Big Disgrace", "Tubby At The Controls", "Smoke Marijuana", "Love Can Conquer", and "Pauline Love The Natty". Rock In The Ghetto is classic 70s work from Trinity – a Jamaican deejay singer who gets some excellent help on the set from Linval Thompson! Thompson mixes dubby modes with some sharper, crispier crackles at key moments – working as a nice way of punctuation to the moods delivered by Trinity's vocals – which are almost always in the righteous modes you'd guess from the title. Tracks include "Dangerous Rockers & Ting", "Pope Paul Dead & Gone", "Don't Lose Me", "Life Is Not Easy", "Don't Lose Me", "Every Trick In The Book", "Freedom Style", and "Rock In The Ghetto". 2CD set features 10 bonus tracks – titles that include "Lover's Style" and "Come On Baby Dub Style" by The Roots Radics, "Follow My Heart (12" mix)" and "Pope Paul Dead & Gone (12" mix)" by Trinity, "Mr CID" by Barry Brown, "There's A Song" by Pat Kelly, "King Tubby's Rockers" and "Second Hand Girl" by Scientist & Roots Radics, and "Here With Me" by Linval Thompson. A great bit of funk from this obscure 70s combo – the first of their many good albums, and with a sound that's rougher and rawer than the others. The band's grooving in a pretty slow mode here – without the uptempo club tracks of later years – and they've got a style that's a mix of electric LA wah wah funk, plus some of the more Afro-influenced rhythms you might expect from their name. The title's a bit of a joke – because the record features a batch sidemen from the Count Basie band – Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Freddy Green, Billy Mitchell, Frank Foster, and others – all working with Sarah, but the Count's name is missing, due to contractual obligations! Despite that lack, though, the grooves are very much in the best Basie mode – full of soul and searing horn lines – at a level that makes the album one of Sarah's liveliest from the time! Players include Thad Jones and Joe Newman on trumpet, Al Grey on trombone, Frank Foster and Frank Wess on tenor, and Freddie Green on guitar – and Ronnell Bright handles the piano, instead of Basie. Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $19.99 24.99
Don't think "girl zone", think "killer female tracks from the 60s" – because this whole collection has a lot more bite than the usual sort of records that are often pushed under a girl-titled heading! Some numbers are raw garage tracks from the 60s, with female singers in the lead, and an all-gal lineup in the backing – and others are soul-styled numbers that definitely stay on the grittier side of the spectrum, and which aren't the sort of weepy or sappy tunes you might normally associate with 60s girl pop. The collection's a stone killer, done in the best Ace Records mode – which means detailed notes on the heavy liner sleeve inside, and a stunning selection of rare tracks that include "I Idolize You" by The Charmaines, "Here She Comes" by The Darlettes, "Louie Louie" by The Angels, "Here Comes Loneliness" by The Teardrops, "It's All In The Way You Look At It Baby" by Mousie & The Traps, "Smoke From Your Cigarette" by The Drake Sisters, "Camel Walk" by The Ikettes, "I've Got A Story To Tell You" by The Kavetts, "Together Forever" by Pat Powdrill & The Powerdrills, "Panic" by Reparata & The Delrons, and "Losin Control" by The Fashionettes. Nothing weird here, just wonderful – a fantastic assortment of music from a time when the British scene was really changing things up – served up in a book-styled package with notes that are as dynamic as its music! The tracks here move way past the obvious – that's an image of John Lennon on the cover, but these aren't the tracks by The Beatles and bigger acts of the time – and instead, the collection really does a great job of digging around all the really wonderful groups that were recording for the bigger British labels of the period, but who were given a lot of freedom to really try out new ideas – both in their music, and in the way the music was recorded. The package is the best we've ever seen to present this slice of English rock – and the set features 122 titles on 5CDs – with work from Ron Geesin, Atlanta Roots, Simon Dupree, The Smoke, John's Children, Ivor Cutler, Tinsel Arcade, The Soft Machine, Canto, New Generation, Medium Rare, 117 Venusian Moonshine, Friday's Chyld, New Generation, Third Ear Band, Wimple Winch, The Deviants, Sorrows, Rupert's People, Orange Bicycle, Shuster, Felius Andromeda, Tomorrow, Crystal Ship, The Moles, and many others – and the set also features 9 never-issued tracks! Pete Brown engineers, and although he is no longer in the group, many of the tunes were originally penned by him – and vocals from other band members have an equally mad sort of vibe – and if that's not enough, the record also features some wonderful work on sax and flute from Nisar Ahmad Khan, who really unlocks some jazzy currents in the music. A tremendously soulful session from the late 70s P-Funk empire – sung by a group who were George Clinton's answer to Three Degrees, First Choice, and other female club trios of the time! The sound here is hardly as disco as those other groups, though – and there's plenty of funky Clinton touches in the mix – including rumbling basslines, raspy guitars, and a tightly focused groove that has the singers Dawn Silva, Sheila Horn, and Jeanette McGruder working equally with the larger group of musicians on the record. Production is by Bootsy Collins and Clinton, with horn arrangements by Fred Wesley – which makes for some great Horny Horns funk touches on most tracks! The title cut – "Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy" – runs on as a long P-Funk groove for about 15 minutes, but other tracks are shorter, and titles include "I'm Holding You Responsible", "Smoke Signals", "Party Up In Here", and "Didn't Mean To Fall In Love". The set's certainly got traces of Don's work within larger west coast groups of the time – but also shares some of the more open and spontaneous styles of his labelmates' work on the Mode label at the time – kind of an opening of the west coast approach of the 50s, still with a focus on arrangements and the overall feel of the work – but also in a way that swings easily and openly! A stunning tribute to the wonderful Bobbie Gentry – and maybe the first package to really show the world how much she has to offer past her one classic crossover hit! Bobbie started out like a rocket with the country gem "Ode To Billie Joe" – a tune she wrote herself, and followed with lots of other great music on her debut album – which then set the scene for a great expansion into other modes, as Capitol Records really opened up their resources for Gentry to record in the late 60s! This double-length set really gets at the full scope of sounds that Bobbie created for Capitol – and includes way more than hits, with some rare tracks from obscure later albums, singles, and even a big number of titles that didn't even see the light of day until a 2018 box set issued with a similar title. 2CD set features a massive 32 tracks in all – and tunes include the rare "Sweete Peony (alt)", "Sunday Mornin (alt)", "Conspiracy Of Homer Jones", "Let It Be Me (without strings)", "Apartment 21 (stereo)", "Smoke", "Joanne", "The Girl From Cincinnati", "Circle Round The Sun", "Seasons Come Seasons Go (demo)", "Refractions", "Courtyard", and "Sittin Pretty" – plus lots more titles that only first appeared in 2018.
