The earliest roots of the Sly Stone
sound in California – but music that's very different than his heady sounds from the San Francisco scene at the end of the 60s! Instead, the approach here is teen pop and soul at its best – as you'd probably guess from the look of the group, who were all classmates together at Vallejo High – and who work here together as a surprisingly strong sextet! Sly
's a member, but we're not going to give him all the credit – as the vocal leads shift, taking full advantage of the young talents in the group – heard here over a very small slice of work during the few years they were together. The harmonies are great – very much in an east coast group soul mode – and the set unearths some rare tapes for some tunes, and also offers up two rare early Sly Stone
singles, and a Jasper Woods track that is actually Richard Berry with the Viscaynes
. As usual with Ace, the presentation is wonderful – with a huge booklet of notes and lots of photos of the group – to support 19 titles that include "Yellow Moon", "Uncle Sam Needs You", "A Long Time Alone", "Hully Gully Papa", "I'm Coming Home", "Don't Cry Soldier", "I'm Just A Fool", "Oh What A Night", and "Heavenly Angel".
