Dinosaur L (Arthur Russell)24 24 Music – The Definitive Arthur Russell Sleeping Bag Recordings ... CD
Sleeping Bag/Get On Down, 1981. New Copy 2 CDs ... $9.99 19.99
An incredible album from Dinosaur L – the legendary New York dancefloor project of Arthur Russell! – fleshed out and expanded more than ever before by Sleeping Bag and Get On Down Records! The group's core sound is a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! The tracks on the original set were simply numbered – "1", "2", "3", and so on – and come across almost as free-jamming instrumentals – but this reissue appends the songs with their 12" titles, so "#1" gets parenthetically entitled "You're Gonna Be Clean On Your Bean" and "#5" as "Go Bang!", plus this disc adds several 12" versions that were not on the original LP release, like Francois K's mix of 'Go Bang!" and Larry Levan's mix of "In The Corn Belt". Totally great stuff – as experimental as it is funky! This 2CD box set edition is amazing – coming in a heavy-duty box with each disc in an oversized gatefold style sleeve – and it includes more Arthur Russell collaborative and/or pseudonymous material for Sleeping Bag with or as Bonzo Goes To Washington, Felix, Sounds Of JHS Brooklyn and Indian Ocean. Other tracks include "School Bell/Treehouse" (Indian Ocean), "You Can't Hold Me Down (Extended Version)" (Felix), "5 Minutes (R-r-r Radio Mix)" (Bonzo Goes To Washington) and more. Also includes a nice booklet of photos, artwork and artist testimonials – plus notes by Russell biographer Tim Lawrence. CD

✨✧ VariousGo Bang – Sleeping Bag 80s Club Classics ... CD
Sleeping Bag/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Mid 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A mighty double-length collection of cuts from the Sleeping Bag label – an important 80s indie that grew up almost completely during the generation of hip hop – which meant that right from the start, the company had a very different approach to soul music and contemporary club! There's plenty of hip hop elements at work here – harder beats, more electro modes, and other street soul elements – mixed with a rising current of house music, but again with a style that's much more tuned towards a New York vibe than the rest. 2CD set features 24 tracks in all – most of them rare 12" mixes – and titles include "Go Bang (Francois K mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Tiger Stripes (ext mix)" by Felix, "Radio Rhythm (short voc)" by Clandestine, "Weekend (club the wam bam mix)" by Todd Terry, Happiness (orig Frankie Knuckles club 12" mix)" by Nicole, "Let Me Love You For Tonight (orig house club 12")" by Kariya, "Just Waiting For You (master dub 12")" by Ann Marie, "Come Into My Life (Mantronix 12")" by Joyce Sims, "A Little Bit Of Lovin (clubby dubby mix)" by Chocolette, "Cornbelt (Larry Levan mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Chill Pill (Danny Krivit mix)" by Sounds Of JHS Brooklyn, and "What Am I Gonna Do About You (Steve Anderson silk on steel mix)" by Tafuri. Cash Money & MarvelousWhere's The Party At? (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sleeping Bag/Demon (UK), 1988. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
Maybe the crowning achievement of DJ Cash Money – a sharp DJ from the early Philly scene – and a talent who was every bit as great at the time on as Jazzy Jeff on the wheels of steel! Cash is paired here with Marvelous, an MC whose sense of wit really matches the sharpness of the production on the record – and the album's a classic from a time when the indie underground was starting to burst out again with strong full length albums like this! There's plenty of deft, playful rhymes on the set – and titles include "Find An Ugly Woman", "Play It Kool", "Is It Real", "Time Is Up", "A Real Mutha For Ya", "Marvelous' Drawers", "Ugly People Be Quiet (rmx)", "Ugly People Be Quiet", "The Mighty Hard Rocker", and "The Music Maker". Sleeping Bag/Octave (Japan), 1986. New Copy ... $14.99
The follow up to the classic first LP! Listening to Kurtis Mantronik productions all of these years later is a definite educational experience, given the huge influence the crisp synth sounds had on the future of hip hop – not only as a matter of necessity, given the cost of sample clearance, but also as an aesthetic choice. Archeological chin-scratching aside, it's a straight up good time, with a shiny electronic bounce – one that holds up well! Tracks include "Music Madness", "Who Is It?", "Ladies (UK rmx)", "Scream", "Listen To The Bass Part" – plus 5 bonus tracks including "Scream" original 12 inch club and dub versions, "Who It Is?" original 12 inch freestyle USA club and UK club mixes, and "Who's Dub Is It? Great stuff – as "Weekend" is an extremely catchy groover! A bit disco, a bit funk, and with some stellar work by Patrick Adams. The cut was written by Adams' old collaborator from Black Ivory days, Leroy Burgess – and it's got a hook that just won't quit. This version's a bit more soulful than the one on Sleeping Bag that was cut a few years later, too!
