Flesh EatersMinute To Pray, A Second to Die ... CD
Slash/Superior Viaduct, 1981. Used ... $14.99 24.99
Wicked early 80s punk from The Flesh Eaters – with some fun nods to trash culture and B-movies in the cover art, song titles and lyrical imagery – but it's also some of most slyly ambitious sounds from the west coast scene of the time! It's clear from the first track they're going for something more instrumentally adventurous than others at the time, with sax and off kilter hand percussion all over it – but Chris D's vision and caterwauling presence as front man keeps it nice and raucous. X's John Doe and DJ Bonebrake are both Flesh Eaters in this peak period, along with sax player Steve Berlin, later to join Los Lobos – and even roots rock hero Dave Alvin – that's a hell of a punk band, right?! Titles include "Digging My Grave", "Satan's Stomp", "So Long", "Cryan De Berger's Back", "Divine Horseman", "See You In The Boneyard" and more. CD

Violent FemmesHallowed Ground ... LP
Slash/Craft, 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 25.99
Pure greatness from The Violent Femmes – only the trio's second album, but a set that already has them expanding their sound greatly! They've still got all the raw power of their debut – and Gordon Gano's vocals sound nastier than ever – but they've also picked up a lot more instruments, too – including some folksy elements that are mixed with punkier impulses – all at a level that complicates the groove, and really creates a lot more variety in the structure of their songs! A few guests round out the instrumentation – but the real charm is still mostly from the trio, and especially Gano – whose lead vocals are some of the most unique in music at the time – as is his conception of a song. Titles include the excellent "Country Death Song", plus "I Hear The Rain", "Jesus Walking On The Water", "Hallowed Ground", "Sweet Misery Blues", "Black Girls", "It's Gonna Rain", and "I Know It's True But I'm Sorry To Say". Slash/Fat Possum, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest records to ever come out of the west coast punk scene at the end of the 70s and start of the 80s – incredibly well-penned and well-played – at a level that instantly leaves behind so many of its contemporaries! The themes of the tunes are fantastic – sung by Exene Cervenka and John Doe – as little tales of lust, greed, compromise, and decay – all set to the fantastic drums of DJ Bonebrake and the searing guitar of the great Billy Zoom! The quartet are amazing together – never missing a beat as they rip through classics that include "Your Phone's Off The Hook But You're Not", "Johnny Hit & Run Pauline", "Soul Kitchen", "Nausea", "Los Angeles", and "Sex & Dying In High Society". ✨✧ Violent FemmesViolent Femmes (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Slash, 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
A surprising classic from the early 80s underground – a record that came to the world from the scene in Milwaukee, where neither the group nor the rest of the world would have expected the album to have such staying power over the decades! And yet, from the very first needle drop, it's hard to imagine otherwise – as the record's got this raw intensity that's not really punk, certainly not new wave – almost an American primitivist energy that really gets to the heart of the matter from the very first note – and goes on to deliver a non-stop testament of angst and longing, set to scratchy guitar and fast-riffing drums! Gordon Gano's vocals perfectly fit the spirit of the songs – and the set's full of classics that include "Blister In The Sun", "Kiss Off", "Add It Up", "Gone Daddy Gone", and "Prove My Love". CD

✨✧ Phil Alvin with Sun Ra & Dirty Dozen Brass BandUnSung Stories ... LP
Slash, 1986. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the strongest solo project ever from Phil Alvin – a late 80s effort dedicated to the romping R&B sounds of the 50s – done with great help from both the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the Sun Ra Arkestra! A number of cuts are from the glory days of the R&B single – and the approach moves between tracks with Alvin's combo, one with the Dirty Dozen, and three especially nice tracks with the Arkestra! Given the way that Sun Ra's 80s material was often dipping back into earlier generations of jazz, the group make for a very strong fit with Phil's approach – on titles that include "Someone Stole Gabriel's Horn", "Titanic Blues", "Collins Cave", "Death In The Morning", "Next Week Sometime", and "The Old Man Of The Mountain". Seedy LA postpunk with roots rock swagger – an underground masterpiece! Fire Of Love is legendary in indie and punk circles for being on of the earliest records to go full bore with mix of raw punk drive with blues and country swagger – certainly not the first example of those styles being mixed (hat tip to X, The Cramps, etc), but Gun Club are certainly among the first bands to make it their specific sound and something all their own – and it's not a shtick, it's as natural and real as can be, thanks to front man Jeffrey Lee Pierce's own roots in Texas. It's as firey, original and exciting now as ever! Includes "Sex Beat", "For The Love Of Ivy", "Preaching The Blues", "Ghost On The Highway", "Cool Drink Of Water", "Goodbye Johnny", "Fire Spirit", "She's Like Heroin To Me" and more. CD

Tuff DartsTuff Darts ... CD
Sire/Wounded Bird, 1978. New Copy ... $10.99 13.99
The great self-titled set from Tuff Darts – one of the less-remembered groups to play the CBGB scene of the late 70s, and one who effortlessly blend punkish energy with tighter power pop sounds! The group are maybe a strong precursor of new wave styles to come in the following year or two after the record's release – but they've also got a rawer sound overall, and a snottier vibe on some of their tunes – not exactly Dead Boys territory, but with the vibe that you might guess from their look on the cover! Yet they're also not afraid to get tuneful when they want, which happens on a few key tunes here – part of a great lineup that includes "My Guitar Lies Bleeding In My Arms", "Phone Booth Man", "Your Love Is Like Nuclear Waste", "Rats", "Slash", "Fun City", and "Love & Trouble". ✨✧ VariousThird Noise Principle – Formative North American Electronica 1975 to 1984 (4CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. Used 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic entry in the Close To The Noise Floor series – one that looks at early American experiments with electronics – but from the DIY generation that was unlocking access to technology that had previously been in the hands of bigger label artists and the academic electronic scene! The work here is a great partner to UK changes in the punk years and beyond – and, no surprise, some of these artists gained greater fame overseas, where their sounds resonated strongly with music from Sheffield, Manchester, Berlin, and other cities on the continent. And if you think you can guess what's coming, then guess again – because there's so much material here, the 4CD set really goes into some deeper, darker corners – and also pulls together work from different areas of the underground that most folks wouldn't normally connect. So while there's familiar names from labels like Ralph or RRR, there's also a lot more surprises – amidst selections by Richard Bone, Data Bank A, Tone Set, Psyche, Patrick Cowley, Mental Anguish, Controlled Bleeding, Psyclones, Lon C Diehl, Suicide, Residents, Chrome, If Bwana, Terry Riley, Geoffrey Landers, Futurisk, Dark Day, K Leimer, Hunting Lodge, Boy Dirt Car, Smersh, Steve Roach, John Bender, Ministry, Move, Nash The Slash, Tuxedomoon, and many others. Comes with a great book-styled package – pages and pages of notes on the music, with lots of images and record covers too! CD

Mad 13 (Japan), 2023. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The album's great cover image is an homage to the Death Wish soundtrack by Herbie Hancock, and Mantle references 70s funk group Mandrill in his name – but the sound here is very different than either of those two references might make you expect, more in a contemporary hip hop vein, but equally cool overall! The 70s sonic hints are delivered in the well-produced beats, which are peppered with great samples – all to provide a killer backdrop for a rotating cast of rappers who work in both English and Japanese – a lineup that includes BES, King104, Tetrad The Gang Of Four, Jomo, Jackson2, Vikn, A-Thug, and BD – on titles that include "Rest In Peace", "Only My Lyrics Is Real", "2Face", "Level The Vibes", "OG Theory", "Moment Of The Sexorcist", "Run the World", "Tied In A Row", and "Front Of Underground". BBC Radiophonic WorkshopSoundhouse ... CD
BBC/Silva Screen, 1983. Used ... $11.99 14.99
Weird and wonderful sounds from one of the coolest spots in the universe – the legendary BBC Radiophonic Workshop, home to a mix of surprisingly groovy and experimental electronic music! This album was issued on the 25th anniversary of the sonic institution – and it features a strong mix of older analogue styles with some more 80s-oriented electronics – yet still with all the depth you'd expect from the Radiophonic Workshop during its classic years! These aren't tinny slasher keyboards, or electro pop programs – and instead, the music here is as thoughtful and compelling as the sounds created during the Delia Derbyshire generation – but are handled by artists who include Peter Howell, Paddy Kingsland, Dick Mills, Jonathan Gibbs, Elizabeth Parker, and Malcolm Clarke. Titles include "Mainstream", "Radiophonic Rock", "Computers In The Real World", "Rallyman", "Seascape", "Land & People", "Houdini's Magic Box", "Ghost In The Water", "Planet Earth", and "Catch The Wind". A soundtrack with a blood-dripping knife on the cover, and a number of tracks titled "The Ripper" – both of which are a very good hint at the sounds on the record! Francesco De Masi is in great early 80s horror mode here – penning music with a mighty rich vibe for this Lucio Fulci film – in a mix of familiar slasher numbers with electric elements, and a few other cuts that have a fuller, more expressive feel! The slasher numbers are the real draw here – and represent most of the album – with sweet keyboards, riffing guitar, and an overall vibe that's more late 70s than you'd guess from the time – not as cold as some of the Italo horror sounds to come. Titles include "The Ripper", "Phone Call", "Riptronic", "New York One More Day", "Puertorico Club", "Tic Neveroso", and "The Ballade Of The Cobra". 29 tracks, 70 minutes of music – and lots of bonus material! ✨✧ Fabio Fabor (Fabio Borgazzi)Pape Satan (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Hard/Pleasantville (South Korea), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really dark little sound library album – but maybe that's what you would have guessed from a record that has satan in the title! The music here is almost a stripped-down, compressed approach to some of the territory that Goblin were bringing to their early soundtracks – lots of keyboards, guitar, and other electric elements – used in styles that move between spare and moody, to more compressed and intense – the latter especially on songs that pick up the rhythms a bit, but in a way that's far from the more familiar post-disco grooves of the Italian slasher scene. Fabio Fabor wrote and performed the entire set – with instrumentation that includes Fender Rhodes, Arp, and vocoder – on titles that include "Dies Irae", "Stige", "Trillo De Diavolo", "Dalle Sirene", "Diabolic Love", "Caronte", "Segno Di Fuoco" "Ad Inferos", and "Acheron". ✨✧ Frankie Stein & His GhoulsComplete Ghoul-Lection (Introducing/Shock Terror Fear/Ghoul Music/Monster Melodies/Monster Sounds & Dance Music) ... CD
Power/Real Gone, Mid 1960s. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
The complete run of monster rock albums from this short-lived studio group – all brought together in one set! The first album's the debut – Introducing Frankie Stein & His Ghouls – filled with fantastic Halloween rockers – a whole host of original tracks recorded in the best mid 60s garage/monster mode – at a level that definitely makes this full length set the top of the stack for the short-lived genre! The package came out on the small Power Records label, who sometimes would use other big names in no-name presentations like these – and although the players aren't listed, the instrumentation is great – lots of sharp guitar lines, tenor solos, and all sorts of weird effects and production twists and turns – which keeps things spooky throughout! Titles include "Good River", "Weerdo The Wolf", "Knives & Lovers", "Ghoul Days", "A Hearse Is Not A Home", and "3 Little Weirds". Next is Shock Terror Fear – a horror classic from a cool little combo – one who know how to use just the right dose of sound effects and monster touches next to the rocking instrumental sound at the core! These guys are a super-sharp group – we've always wondered if they're not another act, hiding under this Halloween-styled name – and they serve up romping rhythms and surf guitars with the best of the 60s instrumental acts – but also manage to bring in all sorts of interesting production and effects that live up to the title of the record! Ok, it's maybe not the total terror of some slasher film, but it's plenty fun throughout – a romp through 60s monster territory, with titles that include "Doom At Midnight", "The Ghostman Rings Twice", "Bodies Under The Bridge", "Slay Boy", "Ankle Twist", and "Stoned". Ghoul Music is next – maybe not the wildest record in the genre of 60s monster rock, but a set that's still got plenty of weird and wonderful stuff going on! There's not really any vocals, so the set avoids the "Monster Mash" novelty vibe – but it more than makes up for it with the use of plenty of odd sound effects amidst the echoey production of the rocking instrumentation – almost as if some surf/hot rod combo showed up to play a gig in a spot that turned out to be a haunted house – and they kept on rocking while all the ghouls showed up for the party! Titles include "Fly Me To The Goon", "Chained", "A Taste Of Poison", "Mummy's Little Boy", "Good Noose", "The Wrist Twist", and "Shoot A Nanny". Next up is Monster Melodies from Frankie Stein and his combo – a group who almost have more of a surf/hot rod style here at times – but who also get some cool production to make things a bit more scary overall! There's a fair bit of well-played tenor solos next to the twangy guitar lines you might expect – and the whole thing has very nice echo to make the extra elements sound very cool too – including some harmonica lines that almost echo an Italian film mode! Titles include "In A Groovy Grave", "Dr Spook", "Ghoulish Heart", "Monster Man", "Bloody Water", and "I Died For You". Monster Sounds & Dance Music is the last in the legendary run of monster rock records from Frankie Stein & The Ghouls – a mid 60s set that resonates strongly with both the surf instrumental scene of the time, and with the big wave of monster-inspired records that filled the racks in the decade! Much of the music isn't spook-styled overall – the set's got a lot of great guitar instrumentals at the core – but the producer throws in all these cool screams, sound effects, and odd studio techniques to make the tunes sound nice and strange – lots of nice moments on tracks that include "Dance Of Doom", "The Creep", "Mummy's Little Monster", "Kiss Of Death", and "Saturday Evening Ghost". Spooky keyboards galore – and a classic horror soundtrack from Goblin – done with just the right blend of rock influences and film score modes to live up to their well-deserved legacy! As on other records, the approach here is more that of a rock group – with guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums as the main instrumentation – but the sound is less jamming and very spare at times – so that these familiar elements get a weird sort of twist, and head into styles that are as tense as some of the images on the screen! A few numbers get slightly funky, but overall things are more in a slasher-type mode – and titles include "The Carver", "Rush", "Time Is On", "Ogre", "Quiet Drops", "Bikini Island", and "Flood".
