✨✧ Willie The Lion Smith & Don Ewell/Claude Hopkins/Sir Charles ThompsonGrand Piano/Soliloquy/Portrait Of A Piano ... CD
Sackville (Canada), 1967/1972/1984. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
Three full albums in one package – each featuring a different trad pianist! First up is the Grand Piano album – fiercely fantastic duets between Willie The Lion Smith and Don Ewell – both artists who've got a tremendous command of the piano keyboard on their own, and who really explode with energy when working together! The album's filled with effortlessly-cascading notes on the keys – often quite rhythmic, with interlocking energy that just seems to drive each player onward. And while you might worry that trad piano recorded in the 60s might be a bit of a snooze, the album's anything but – as the high fidelity and relaxed recording setting makes for even more magic than you might expect. Titles include "Some Of These Days", "Can't We Be Friends", "I Would Do Anything For You", "Just You Just Me", "I've Found A New Baby", and "A Porter's Love Song To A Chambermaid". Soliloquy is a 1972 session, and one that actually marks the first solo performance by pianist Claude Hopkins – really sounding wonderful here as he works through some traditional jazz modes, but in a nicely crisp setting that opens up with a beautiful sense of tone and color! Titles include "Late Evening Blues", "Crazy Fingers", "If I Could Be With You One Hour Tonight", and "Safari Stomp". Portrait Of A Piano is beautiful late work from the great Sir Charles Thompson – recorded solo, and with a set of tunes that spread out to showcase his versatility on the keys – with some really lovely numbers that resonate more with contemporary jazz, or at least jazz from the postwar years – plus others that step back into more trad-styled roots! Charles is solo throughout, and beautifully recorded – on titles that include "All The Things You Are", "Round Midnight", "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most", "Samo Blues", and "Easy Living". ✨✧ Don ByasDon Byas Quartet Featuring Sir Charles Thompson ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
Tenorist Don Byas may have waned a bit on the American scene by the end of the 60s – but the saxophone genius was alive and well overseas, where he got the chance to cut some amazing records like this! The set has Byas at the top of his form – maybe as openly expressive as Dexter Gordon on some of his great late 60s recordings from Europe, although with a slightly more compact, direct approach as well – one that's given a nice sort of punch here by pianist Charles Thompson, work works alongside the excellent bass of Isla Eckinger and drums fo Peter Schmidlin. Titles include "Darn That Dream", "Autumn Leaves", "The Girl From Ipanema", "Loverman", "Stella By Starlight", and "Bag's Groove". CD

Buck Clayton & Buddy TateKansas City Nights (Buck & Buddy/Buck & Buddy Blow The Blues) ... LP
Prestige/Swingville, 1960/1961. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $4.99
A 2-fer set from the 70s – with 2 great older albums from Buck & Buddy! First up is the self-titled Buck & Buddy – beautiful blowing from Buck Clayton and Buddy Tate – captured here in the relaxed, easy-going setting of the Swingville label! The album's got a lot more charm than some of Clayton's sides for Columbia – a bit more mellow, with the kind of after hours feel that lets players like these show their strongest suits on their instruments. Clayton plays trumpet, Tate tenor – and rhythm is from the trio of Sir Charles Thompson on piano, Gene Ramey on bass, and Mousie Alexander on drums. Titles include "High Life", "Birdland Betty", "Can't We Be Friends", and "Kansas City Nights". Next Is Buck & Buddy Blow The Blues – a romping little session from Buck Clayton and Buddy Tate – served up in a looser, more relaxed setting than the former's albums for Columbia, and a slightly more swing-based mode than the latter's dates for Chess! Both horn players get plenty of room to solo in the open-ended Swingville mode – Buck on trumpet and Buddy on both tenor and clarinet – and the group's a nice one too, since Sir Charles Thompson's playing piano, Gene Ramey's on bass, and Gus Johnson's on drums. Titles include "Blue Creek", "Blue Breeze", "Blue Ebony", "Rompin At Red Bank", and "Dallas Delight". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some ring & edge wear and light aging.)

Illinois Jacquet & Leo ParkerToronto 1947 ... CD
Uptown, 1947. Used ... $14.99
A rare performance from two 40s giants of the saxophone – tenorist Illinois Jacquet and baritonist Leo Parker – coming together here in a live setting, with tracks that run a lot longer than most studio work from either player at the time! Given that Jacquet's horn is played at a pretty deep, soulful level, he's pretty great match for the sound of the young Leo Parker – already one of the strongest baritone saxophonists of his generation, with a voice that easily bridges the space between bop and swing! Other players on the date include Joe Newman and Russell Jacquet on trumpets, Sir Charles Thompson on piano, Al Lucas on bass, and Shadow Wilson on drums – and the live material has a quality that's a bit like some of the smaller group JATP performances of the period. Tracks include "Mutton Leg", "Home Sweet Home", "Music Hall Beat", "Bottoms Up", and a nice "Ballad Medley". CD

A killer album by Jimmy – and certainly one of his best later records! The album includes the amazing track "Russian Lullaby", done in a totally swinging jazz version with Ray Bryant, Buddy Tate, and Sir Charles Thompson on organ. The track's incredible, and still sends shivers down our spines when we hear it – even though we've owned it for years! Other material's pretty darn great, too – including "Three Long Years", "Did You Ever", "I Cried for You", and "You Can't Run Around". Great organ by Thompson really makes the set swing! Rare work by Charlie Parker, recorded at Storyville Nightclub in Boston in 1953 – originally broadcast on radio station WHDH, and featuring Bird in a more open, relaxed style than his studio sessions. Blue Note, 1961/1962. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Obscure material from Dexter Gordon – some rare gems from his early 60s years at Blue Note – unissued back and in the day, but brought together for this sweet package at the start of the 80s! The album's great in that it shows Gordon really trying on some new things at the label – playing in a few modes that are less iconic than his classics, yet still really exciting because of that fact! A few tracks feature an unusual quintet with Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Sir Charles Thompson on piano, and Willie Bobo on drums – and three more have Sonny Clark on piano and the great Dave Burns on trumpet, with rhythm by Ron Carter on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. One last track is a quartet number with Kenny Drew on piano – and titles include "Six Bits Jones", "Landslide", "Love Locked Out", "You Said It", and "Second Balcony Jump". LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent late work by Illinois Jacquet – right on a par with his best recordings for Verve, and a great example of the strength of his tenor playing, which didn't always surface as well in large group recordings. The record features Jacquet in the company of a number of smaller groups – featuring players like Matthew Gee, Roy Eldridge, Sir Charles Thompson, Kenny Burrell, and Leo Parker – and the tracks are a good mix of originals and lusty standards, with tunes that include "Pucker Up", "Imagination", "Banned In Boston", "How Now?", and "Stella By Starlight". Storyville/Black Lion (Germany), 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant work from Joe Newman – arguably our favorite session of his from the 50s, and a freshly crafted batch of tracks that actually has some nice modern touches! Joe's playing here with 2 different groups – one with John Lewis on piano, Gene Quill on alto, Frank Foster on tenor, and Freddie Green on guitar; and one with Frank Wess on tenor and flute, Ed Jones on bass, and Sir Charles Thompson on piano. The Quill sides are especially nice – very tightly arranged with a good sense of counterpoint, but also enough relaxed soloing to bring in the Newman that we know and love. Titles include "Midgets", "Diffugalty", "I Feel Like A Newman", "King Size", "East Of The Sun", and "Sweetie Cake". CD

Two excellent albums from Jimmy Rushing – packed together on one CD, with extra tracks and great liner notes! Rushing Lullabies is a killer album by Jimmy – and certainly one of his best later records! Jimmy & The Big Brass is another excellent session – and his approach to the material is extremely thoughtful, and always tinged with a good sense of jazz, making it swing a bit more than on earlier recordings. On this album, he's singing to a set of arrangements by Jimmy Mundy, Buck Clayton, and Nat Pierce – and titles include "Jimmy's Blues", "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie", "I'm Coming Virginia", and "Knock Me A Kiss". 25 tracks in all! ✨✧ Buck ClaytonHuckle-buck & Robbins' Nest – A Buck Clayton Jam Session ... LP
Columbia, 1953. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A heavy classic from trumpeter Buck Clayton – and a record that set a whole new standard for the jam session on record at the time! The album pushes forward strongly from the territory of the Jazz At The Philharmonic and Jam Session records on Verve – with a vibrancy that's even stronger, and which really has Clayton's leadership bringing all the players into sharp focus. Each track takes up a side of the record – with plenty of room for individual solo work from players who include Joe Newman on trumpet, Urbie Green and Henderson Chambers on trombones, Lem Davis on alto, Julian Dash on tenor, Charlie Fowlkes on baritone, Sir Charles Thompson on piano, and Freddie Green on guitar! The performances are nicely more focused than looser live jam session material of this nature – and titles include "The Huckle-Buck" and "Robbin's Nest". LP, Vinyl record album
