✨✧ VariousFunk Spectrum Vol 3 – Real Funk For Real People (Compiled by Pete Rock & Keb Darge) ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
BBE strikes again with another massive bit of funk! This time, they've got Pete Rock helping Keb Darge to choose the tracks – and the set's divided up so that the first half's all cuts picked by Pete, and the second's picked by Keb. These two funky selectas go head to head in a wonderful batch of rare tunes – and if you ask us, the listener's the real winner! Titles include "Trespasser (part 1)" by Bad Medicine, "Chains & Things" by BB King, "Soul Lover" by Mutt & Jeffo, "Break It Loose (part 2)" by Onyx, "You're Welcome Stop On By" by Vickie Anderson (Mommie O), "Big Bad John" by Big John Hamilton, "Prelude To Say Brother" by Stark Reality, "We Are The Chosen Few" by The Chosen Few, "Nothin But A Party (part 1)" by The Blenders, "Jones N" by The Soulistics, "Don't Give A Damn" by King Cain & Silvertone Band, "Twine Time" by Seeburg Spotlite Band, "Ca Ba Dab" by Soul Swingers, "Deal With It" by Jimmy Lane & The Incredibles, and "What They Doing (Funkie Junkie)" by Charles Pryor & Power Of Love. Loads of excellent cuts – and almost none of them have been reissued before! CD

SilvertonesSilver Bullets ... LP
Trojan/Antarctica Starts Here, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 22.99
Great work from one of the lesser-known vocal trios of the Kingston scene in its heyday – and a group who are also an obscure Lee Perry project too! The Silvertones have a wonderful harmony style – a very deep lead, and soaring backups that really take off in surprising ways – all given a nice deep grounding by some early Perry production – which makes a lot of the music sound a lot more hard-hitting than it might in the hands of someone else! The tunes include some excellent American soul remakes, plus some even better obscure originals – and titles include "Soul Sister", "He Will Break Your Heart", "Are You Sure", "Rock Me In Your Soul", "Early In The Morning", "I'll Take You Home", "Rejoice Jah Children", "Rejoicing Skank", and "Souvenir Of Mexico". Lee Perry & The UpsettersReturn Of Sound System Scratch – More Lee Perry Dub Plate Mixes & Rarities 1973 to 1979 ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99 29.99
Rare and unreleased Lee Perry dubplate mixes – brilliant productions from the creatively fruitful, boundary busting 70s years – with the mighty Upsetters and numbers featuring Junior Murvin, Candy Mackenzie, Leo Graham, Jimmy Riley, George Faith, Jack Lord and The Silvertones! This is the second Sound System Scratch compilation from the deep treasure diggers at Pressure Sounds – who have again assembled staggeringly adventurous and hard to find Scratch productions from an amazing period at Black Ark. A number of the tracks are previously unreleased, others are exclusive dubplate mixes, all incredible – be it smoked out, hazy dubs and surprisingly accessible and soulful reggae. Includes "Righteous Rocking" by The Upsetters, "Get Ready (Bongo Mix) by Junior Murvin & The Upsetters, "Kis Me Mix" by The Upsetters, "I've Got The Dub" by George Faith & The Upsetters, "Enter The Upsetter" by Lee Perry & The Upsetters, "Darkness In The City" by Jimmy Riley & The Upsetters, "Rejoice Jah Jah Children" by The Silvertones and more. VariousCan't Stop The Dread (with bonus tracks) ... CD
High Note/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
Deep Jamaican sounds from the 70s – all work produced by the legendary Sonia Pottinger, and which shows that her talents for roots music were every bit as great as her work with earlier styles too! With Pottinger, the key is almost less what she does in the studio than what she does with her ear – as her ability to identify key talent at the right moment is something that really graces most of her recordings – definitely the case here, in an overstuffed 2CD set that features rare singles from the High Note label, most appearing on CD for the first time ever, 8 of which are previously unissued! As with other releases on the Doctor Bird label, the choice of cuts are as great as the overall presentation – which includes very detailed notes – to support a set list of 35 tracks that includes "Winey Winey (12" version)" by The Kingstonians, "King Of Kings" by Mind Body & Soul, "Babylon A Run Come" by The Mellows, "Sufferer's Child" by Delroy Denton & The Silvertones, "Lonesome I" by The Roots Defenders, "Trouble & Strife" by The Africans, "Whole Lot Of Feeling (12" version)" by Justin Hinds & The Dominoes, "See It Deh (12" version)" by Enos McLeod, "World World" by Joseph Burke & Tribute, and "Love & Inity" by Ras Miller. VariousFire Over Babylon – Dread, Peace & Conscious Sounds At Studio One ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99 39.99
Some of the most righteous sounds ever recorded at the legendary Studio One label in Jamaica – 70s music that marks a time when the company was moving into some of the more thoughtful, meaningful lyrics that rose to prominence during the rasta generation! The shift is no surprise, given that Bob Marley once recorded for Studio One – but by the time of these tracks, Marley had risen to international fame on Island Records – helping to open the door for a huge new audience for the message and the music, which Studio One was only happy to address with great tracks like this! The set's every bit as great as the other collections from the label on Soul Jazz – handled with equally thoughtful track selection and detailed notes, to support an 18 track set that includes "Sufferation" by Trevor Clarke, "I Am A Revolutionist" by Freddie McGregor, "Burning In My Soul" by The Silvertones, "Mr Jolly Man" by Horace Andy, "Things & Time" by Wailing Souls, "Serious Thing" by The Gladiators, "So Many Problems" by The Viceroys, "Inner Peace" by Pablove Black, "Rock But Don't Fall" by Wailing Souls, "Jah Jah Fire" by Devon Russell, and "Give Me Back Me Language & Me Culture" by Im & Count Ossie. VariousSacred Soul – Dave Hamilton's Raw Detroit Gospel 1969 to 1974 ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The lost gospel music legacy of Detroit producer Dave Hamilton – a key force in funk and soul in the Motor City in the 60s – where he developed an amazing sound that he also brought to his spiritual recordings as well! Dave's approach was always grittier than that of Motown or some of the sweeter labels in the city – as you might have heard on some of the great Ace/Kent collections of his rare singles and unissued recordings over the years – all compilations that really lay the groundwork for this one, which is brimming over with raw gospel material from a very soulful stretch in the genre! The work here is like the hippest soul gospel recorded by Chess/Checker or Jewel/Paula at the same time – strongly associated with secular soul in terms of instrumentation, arrangements, and production – and graced with message-oriented lyrics that are perfect for the heady times of the late 60s and early 70s. Some of the tracks were issued on the Sacred Sounds label back in the day, and are mixed with some others found in Hamilton's archives – all given the usual great support by Ace with a big booklet of notes and photos. Titles include "Grown Old & Feeble" by The Soul Inspirers, "I Still Remember" by Umble Faith, "Someday We'll Be Together" by The National Independent Singers, "Savoir On The Throne" by Mr Bo, "Pressing On" by The Silver Harps, "I'm Not Ready To Die" by The Scott Singers, "Down Here Praying" by The Detroit Silvertones, "The Little Light" by The Fantastic Voices Of Joy, "I Heard A Voice (part 1)" by Sensational Angelettes, "If I Had My Way" by OC Tolbert & Clara White Houston, and "Life's Pathway" by Rev Evans. VariousSoul Power 68 (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Treasure Isle/Doctor Bird (UK), 1968. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
Soul power 1968, but Kingston-style too – served up here in a host of gems from the vaults of Jamaican producer Duke Reid! The material is from a perfect moment in Reid's career – a time when he was changing his well-crafted Treasure Isle groove from ska to rocksteady – bringing in a new wave of inspiration from American soul, similar to the work at the start of the 60s that first inspired Jamaican artists to take off in some new directions of their own! The mode here is a blend of styles you might hear on Atlantic or Stax, but set to rhythms that are much more Jamaican – sometimes with soulful vocals in the lead, sometimes working as an answer to American soul instrumental singles of the time. Titles include "Come On Little Girl" by The Melodians, "Funky Beat" by Lloyd Williams, "In The Midnight Hour" by The Silvertones, "Soul Power" by Radcliff Butler, "Music Is My Occupation" by Tommy McCook & The Supersonics, "Black Power" by Winston Wright, and "What More Can I Do" by Clive & Doreen. 2CD set features a stunning 30 bonus tracks – 18 titles of which are new to CD, 3 of which appear here for the first time – material from The Sensations, Hopeton Lewis, Lloyd Tyrell, Joya Landis, The Gladiators, Yardbrooms, Phyllis Dillon, Tommy McCook, and others. 42 tracks in all! Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $21.99 22.99
A seminal look at the sound of harmony soul in Jamaican music – the special way that a label like Studio One could take an American vocal approach, then find new life when pairing the style with the hippest sounds in Kingston! ✨✧ VariousPanama! Vol 2 – Latin Sounds, Cumbia Tropical & Calypso Funk On The Isthmus 1967 to 1977 ... CD
Soundway (UK), Late 60s/1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A second heavy dose of sounds from the Panamanian scene of the 60s and 70s – a long-overdue companion to the previous volume of the series on Soundway, filled with rare gems that are finally getting their first exposure to the world outside the isthmus! The sounds here are completely fresh – somewhat Latin-styled in the rhythms, but often put together in ways that are quite different than any more familiar music of the time – touches of tropical styles, funky grooves, and other odd elements that really keep things interesting – shifting our ears way past any easy expectations, and making us love the Soundway label all over again for their massive work in digging up the rare stuff! The package contains rich notes on the music put together by the label – a look at this oft-ignored musical culture, complete with vintage photos and record images too, so that the whole thing's almost as much of a visual treat as it is an audio one. Titles include "Descarga Superior" by Los Superiores, "Jazzy" by Los Papacitos, "Borambon" by Camilio Azuquita, "La Escoba" by Alfredo Y Su Salsa Montanera, "Love Letters" by Lord Cobra Y Los Hnos Duncan, "Piculina" by Chilo Pitty, "Ain't No Sunshine" by The Soul Fantastics, "Dreams" by The Duncan Brothers, "Tamborito Swing" by Los Silvertones, and "Ese Muerto No Lo Cargo Yo" by The Exciters. ✨✧ VariousTurn It Loose, Ain't No Good – Savoy Gospel 1970 to 1979 ... LP
Savoy/Honest Jons (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
An insanely fantastic look at the strong legacy of gospel music from Savoy Records – a company who were initially a powerhouse in the fields of jazz and R&B, but who moved into the gospel world and dominated that market for decades! Savoy is a bit like Chess Records – a company who really learned how to record blues singers and soulful styles from the secular world, then used that same ability to work some real magic on songs from the more spiritual side of the spectrum – an approach that really made for top-shelf music, even as the decades moved on! Savoy's gospel legacy has always been a bit underground – not nearly as reissued for larger audiences as their jazz and blues material – but this collection does a great job of correcting that lack, by presenting their music in a wonderful format – all in a mix of rare cuts and classics from the gospel underground. This second volume features work from Savoy's prime 70s gospel years – 20 tracks by artists who include The Metro Tones, Betty Hollins, Gene Martin, Swan Silvertones, Artistic Sounds, James Moore, Holy Lights Of Baltimore, Brooklyn Skyways, World Wonders, Myrna Summers, Brockingham Ensemble, Prof Charles Taylor, Exciting Supreme Highlights, and Highway QCs.
