✨✧ VariousJazz Ladies – The Singing Pianists 1926 to 1961 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1920s/1930s/1940s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
The image of a female singer at a piano is nothing new, but it definitely has a very special place in the history of jazz – maybe one of the few spots where a female instrumentalist could really get some time in the spotlight, while also breaking past some of the more standard cliches of teary-eyed torch singers too! This set is an excellent overview of the tradition – and features material from the early years of jazz, when there was maybe a stronger through-line to blues as well – then follows artists up through a huge boom in the postwar years – as piano lines got more modern, and vocal approaches did too! The set does a great job of mixing up traditions – still following some of the more blues-based artists through the 50s as well – and as with every great set on the Fremeaux label, the set features detailed notes in English and French on all the contents. 76 tracks in all – with selections by Cleo Brown, Una Mae Carlisle, Katie Webster, Lilette Thomas, Shirley Horn, Madonna Martin, Christine Chatman, Jeri Southern, Blossom Dearie, Hadda Brooks, Frantic Fay Thomas, Louise Johnson, Martha Davis, Nellie Lutcher, Clara Ward, Ira Mae Littlejohn, Paula Watson, Arizone Dranes, Camille Howard, and a number of others. VariousLet's Do The Boogaloo ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.98
A set that really gets at the full spectrum of the boogaloo groove – not just the Spanish Harlem sounds of the Latin Soul generation – but also the deeper roots of the style from across the USA! "Boogaloo" is a term that most folks use to refer to that New York uptown fusion of Latin rhythms and soulful vocals – and while the NYC styles were key to its fame, the music also burst forth from lots of points west, too – and came together in a flurry of fast rhythms, jazzy instrumentation, and hard-driving vocals that made for a completely infectious blend! This package is a fantastic testament to that mad musical moment – and is overflowing with a selection of gems that goes way past the obvious – not the Fania Records catalog that usually shows up on other boogaloo releases, but a huge batch of tracks from small labels and indie singles too. Titles include "Skate Boogaloo & Karate Too" by Lee Harris, "Block Party" by Jimmy Castor, "Boogaloo #3" by Roy Lee Johnson, "Do The Boo-Ga-Loo (part 1)" by Tom & Jerroo, "Playing It Cool" by Hector Rivera, "Ready Steady Go" by Prince & Princess, "Bar Kays Boogaloo" by The Bar-Kays, "What I Feel" by Richie & The PS 54 School Yard, "Have Some Boogaloo" by Timmy Thomas, "Bugalu" by Charlie Palmieri, "Boogaloo (part 1)" by The Bob & Earl Band, "Me & You Doing The Boogaloo" by Lou Courtney, "Boogaloo Zoo" by Shirley Butler, "Bugaloo Party" by Harold & Connie, "Boogaloo Investigator" by The Exotics, "Funky Funky Boogalo" by Jimmy Brown, and "Let's Do The Funky Boogaloo (part 1)" by Barry Jones. ✨✧ VariousDefinitive Jazz Scene 2 – A Collection Of Rare & Previously Unreleased Recordings ... LP
Impulse, Mid 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Excellent work from the glory days of Impulse Records – tracks from sessions for the label's most famous albums, but never issued until this special package! We're not normally ones to dig various artists collections in jazz, but this series is wonderful – an essential counterpart to the main records on Impulse, and filled with work that really offers a fresh look at the musicians. This 2nd volume is a bit more mainstream than some of the others, but still quite nice – and titles include "Gloria" by JJ Johnson, "Dear Old Stockholm" by John Coltrane, "Anything I Do" by Tommy Flanagan, "Moon Over My Annie" by Lionel Hampton, "The Blues Ain't Nothin But Some Pain" by Shirley Scott, and "Night Lights" by Oliver Nelson. LP, Vinyl record album
