Sisonke XontiUgaba The Migration ... LP
Sharp Flat (Netherlands), 2021. New Copy ... $32.99 36.99
A really tremendous effort from South African saxophonist Sisonke Xonti – way more than just a straight jazz record, and instead the sort of visionary music we're used to hearing from some of the greats of his scene in years back! Xonti's work on tenor and soprano is a key part of the record – but there's also so many deeper currents going on, too – heard most strongly on the long "Migration Suite" that sits at the core of the record, but also flowing out on some of the shorter songs too – which have a sense of majesty and power that's really amazing – especially from such a young musician. In addition to Xonti, other players on the set include Yonela Mnana on piano, Sakhile Simani on piano, Benjamin Jephta on bass, Sphelelo Mazibuko on drums, and Tlale Makhene on percussion. Titles include the four-part "Migration Suite" – plus "Minneapolis", "The Call", "Sinivile", "Nomalungelo", and "Newness". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousThat'll Flat Git It! Volume 35 – Rockabilly & Rock N Roll From The Vaults Of Mercury & Limelight Records ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Hard-rocking gems from the second decade of Mercury Records – a label that first broke big in the postwar years with a strong ear for up-and-coming R&B – and one who continued that close to the ground success during the early years of rock and country music as well! Mercury wasn't as close to the south as some of its contemporaries, but it had a really great ear for key talent, and would often scour points far from its Chicago home in search of budding talents in a variety of genres – which means that the work here is definitely at the top of the pack for the time – tunes that have the sharp bristle of cuts on Chess, Sun, or Starday – the latter of whom was an early partner in helping Mercury find talent. The set features 35 tracks in all, with the superb presentation and detailed notes of previous volumes – on titles that include "Sittin On Top" by Curtis Gordon, "Rockin Robert" by The LaDell Sisters, "My Search" by Ben Hewett, "Baby Baby Baby" by Eddie Bond, "Shake It Up" by Conway Twitty, "My Foolish Fling" by The Half Brothers, "The Last Drag" by Voxpoppers, "Downtown" by Orville Couch, "I Want You Baby" by Jackie Cray, "I'll Never Let It Show" by Charlie Walker & The Four Pals, "Shake This Town" by The Counts, and "Cry Baby Cry" by Narvel Felts. Arthur SmithGuitar Boogie – The Hits Of Arthur Smith & His Crackerjacks ... CD
Nashville/Starday, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $2.99 9.98
Chugging country guitar from Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith – one of the hottest country instrumentalists of the 50s! Smith's heard here in a nicely understated setting – a Starday session from the 60s, with a great back to basics vibe that really focuses on his tight work on the strings – set up on tunes that have a nicely rompin rhythm, but which always feature Smith breaking out in a mighty sharp solo! Titles include his classic "Guitar Boogie" – plus "11 String Strut", "Flat Top Hari Kari", "Guitar Hop", "Maggie Blues On Guitar", "Troubled Mind Blues", and "Philadelphia Guitar". CD

✨✧ De La Soul3 Feet High & Rising ... CD
Tommy Boy, 1989. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The mindblowing classic debut of De La Soul! 3 Feet High And Rising is inarguably one of the most important records in hip hop history – with playful, endearingly oddball trio rhymes and Prince Paul production at it's most sprawlingly sampled and creative. It's got flat out classic songs that stand out well enough on their own, but it's also one of the greatest full length albums in hip hop history – featuring loosely connective skits with recurring characters that are vital to the experience. Last, but not least, 3 Feet. . .is especially fascinating given it's 1989 release year – a time when so many of the contemporaneous crews and solo MCs on both the east coast and west coast were going grittier, darker and more profane – but it doesn't feel like a conscious reaction to that, as much it feels like sharp trio and a brilliant producer carving out their own damn creative niche. Includes "Me, Myself & I", "The Magic Number", "Plug Tunin", "Say No Go", "Tread Water", "Eye Know", "Buddy" and much more! CD

✨✧ Jack McDuffMoon Rappin' ... LP
Blue Note, 1969. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An incredible record – the kind of album that no fan of funky jazz should be without! This album is far and away one of the greatest ever cut by Brother Jack McDuff – and it's a baroquely complicated batch of funky jazz cuts that's still light years ahead of any other record! The tracks are much longer than you'll find on Jack's other work – and the group plays these lines that are laidback and trippy, yet which still have a tremendous amount of funk in them. Guitar sets the tone, spacing out over the drums of the great Joe Dukes; electric bass rumbles at all the low, dark spots; flute and tenor sax cut some sharp edges in the void; and the organ of Brother Jack comes in over the top, and soars with cosmic lines of sound! The album includes the monster cut "Oblighetto", sampled by Tribe Called Quest years back – plus other amazing groovers, like "Flat Backin", "Moon Rappin", and "Loose Foot". LP, Vinyl record album
(Liberty pressing – nice and clean overall. Cover has some light aging inside the gatefold, but is nice too.)

Nobuo Hara & Sharps & FlatsActive Volcano ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... $19.99
A definite active volcano of sound from Nobuo Hara and his excellent Sharps & Flats ensemble – a group who were to the Japanese scene of the 70s what the Clark Boland Big Band was to the European one! By that, we mean that the style here is way groovier than you might expect – definite third (if not fourth) generation big band work – full of color and life, but also with a great ear for contemporary rhythms too – thanks to some sweet guitar and keyboards in the mix. The horns are tremendous, but never overwhelming – and Takashi Shitaka provides some very thoughtful arrangements for the record – on tracks that include "White Heron", "Ondo", Sharp Curve", and "South Wind". CD

Jesse Sharps Quintet/Pan Afrikan Peoples ArkestraSharps & Flats ... LP
Nimbus, 1986. New Copy ... $34.99 About January 10, 2022 (delayed)
Soaring spiritual soul jazz from the LA scene – a double-length set that features a beautiful performance by the Jesse Sharps Quintet, plus a longer extended track from Horace Tapscott's Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra! We'll be honest in saying that we'd never heard of Sharps before this album – but he's a heck of a great saxophonist, with a sound that recalls the glory days of the Strata East scene, and the beautiful post-Coltrane Muse sessions by Earl & Carl Grubbs. His group for the session features some excellent work by the great Nate Morgan on piano – driving away in long, rhythmic passages that are very much in the mode of Morgan's own Nimbus recordings – and carried through with an equal amount of soul. Horace Tapscott joins the group on two numbers as well – before stepping over to lead his expanded Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra on the record's extra cut – a composition by Sharps that's entitled "McKowsky's First Fifth" – played by a great Nimbus-esque group that includes Adele Sebastian on flute, Sabia Mateen on tenor, Billie Harris on soprano, and Horace Tapscott on piano. Other titles on the album include "The Goat & The Ramjam", "As A Child", "Mike's Tune", "Macrame", and "Carnival" – and the whole set of tracks is easily one of the greatest recordings on the legendary Nimbus label! Hozan Yamamoto & Sharps & FlatsBeautiful Bamboo Flute ... LP
Victor/Mr Bongo (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 27.98
One of the coolest albums ever cut by Japanese wood flute player Hozan Yamamoto – a set that has him working with very groovy backings from the Sharps & Flats ensemble – who almost give the whole thing an MPS label blending of funky jazz and world music sounds! The approach is wonderful – a bit more upbeat and swinging than some of Yamamoto's other records, as Nobuo Hara leads the larger group with a totally cool sound – which makes the flute lines a sweet exotic touch over straightforward, soul-drenched, big band jazz! We might even link the sound to some of Dorothy Ashby's grooviest albums for Chess/Cadet – although with flute, instead of harp – and titles include "Komoro Mago-Uta", "Soma Bon-Uta", "Kokirio Bushi", "Sado Okesa", "Tairyo Utaikomi", and "Kuroda-Bushi". ✨✧ VariousJ Jazz 2 – Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969 to 1983 (3LP set) ... LP
BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $39.99
An incredible trip through the 70s Japanese jazz scene – a second volume of J Jazz that's even bigger and better than the first – with unknown gems from private presses, indie labels, and rarities from the Japanese branches of the major labels, too! Compilers Tony Higgins & Mike Peden (who are both also responsible for the nicely done notes) follow through on all of the things we loved about the first J Jazz compilation, but improve on it by going bigger and digging deeper. The majority of the tracks were recorded from 1969 through the late 70s – with a few recorded in later years – and all have a wonderful way of being open to the stylistic inventions of the time without getting hung up on trends. So while there's some fusiony funk and electric piano, there's plenty of acoustic instrumentation and timelessly inventive material. BBE has outdone themselves on this excellent collection – and the titles include "Dragon Dance" by Makoto Terashita & Harold Land, "Daguri" by Kohsuke Mine Quintet, "Distant Thunder" by Mabumi Yamguchi Quartet, "Animal Garden" by Miyasaka + 5, "Mother Of The Future" by Electro Keyboard Orchestra, "Serenade To A Dimly Lit Street" by Hiroshi Matsumoto/Hideo Ichikawa Quartet, "Teru-Teru Bozu" (Black Keys) by Teru Sakamoto Trio, "Little Giant" by Nobuo & Sharps & Flats, "Brown Trout" by Akira Miyazawa and more. 14 tracks on 3LPs. ✨✧ VariousOriginal Blues/Risque Blues – It Ain't The Meat – Original King Recordings ... CD
King/Gusto, Late 40s/Early 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Raw, raunchy sounds – all pulled together from a time before soul and rock even existed! Most of the work here is from the classic catalog of King Records – a killer imprint in the postwar R&B market, and a company who wasn't afraid to do what it took to make a knockout record! In the case of these tracks, the singers often hit some fairly suggestive material – often hidden in early 50s innuendo, but barely so – with a vibe that's often nastier than even the most hardcore rockabilly sounds to come! The music here has its roots in blues, but is inflected with plenty of jazz, and the presence of the singers often point the way towards soul music – especially the James Brown crowd that would later rise at the same label. Titles on this volume include "It Ain't The Meat" by The Swallows, "Salty Dog" by The Lamplighters, "Ride Daddy Ride" by Orvill Fats Noel, "The Walkin Blues" by Fluffy Hunter, "I Knew He Would" by The Sharps & Flats, "Wasn't That Good" and "Shake That Thing" by Wynonie Harris, and "Roll Roll Pretty Baby" by The Swallows. ✨✧ Icepick (Nate Wooley/Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten/Chris Corsano)Hellraiser ... LP
Astral Spirits, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A group that comes on with the sharply pointed force of their name – a really powerful presentation of sounds from Nate Wooley on trumpet, Chris Corsano on drums, and Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten on bass! All three players are fantastic here – leaping right out of the box with an energy that clearly shows an implicit understanding of each others' strengths, and improvising freely in ways that are really wrapped around each other – not the single expressions of the three different egos in the group, but instead this really unified approach that makes the whole thing even more forceful overall! Haker-Flaten is especially impressive – a player who's always great, but whose fast, rumbling presence here really seems to move mountains – on titles that include "El Bound", "Chicago Deader", and "Blue Line" – all references to the Windy City pedigree of the set.
