Lonnie YoungbloodMan To Woman (voc, inst) ... 7-inch
Shakat, 1974. Near Mint- ... $1.99
A nice little entry in the "Woman to Woman" answer song series – which was started a few years earlier by Barbara Mason and Shirley Brown. Lonnie pretends he's the man, listening in on the "Woman To Woman" conversation, and thinking about how bad an earner his woman is! The flipside's an instrumental, with Lonnie's sax in the lead. 7-inch, Vinyl record

ShakatakLive ... CD
One Way, 1985. Used ... $4.99
A spacious live set from Shakatak – proof that the smoothness of their groove doesn't always live in the studio, but can also hit a concert stage as well! The album features tracks from both the group's vocal and instrumental incarnations – and as such, it's a bit more fusion-heavy than some of the other Shakatak albums of the mid 80s – never too jamming or rockish, and still always in that warmly soulful sound the group does so well. Jill Saward is on vocals, percussion, and a bit of flute – and titles include "Invitations", "Night Birds", "Dark Is The Night", "Down On The Street", and "Don't Blame It On Love". CD features the bonus track "Summer Sky". CD

✨✧ ShakatakNight Birds ... LP
Polydor, 1982. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The cover of this one sports an image that's almost rockish – especially given that the "night birds" on the image are pterodactyls – but the sound is as smooth and jazzy as you'd expect from Shakatak at their best! The group were a leading light in 80s fusion, and with records like this it's easy hear why – thanks to well-played keyboards from Bill Sharpe – handled with a spaciously stepping groove that underscores the more soulful leanings of the group. There's a bit of vocals on the set, but the album's still mostly an instrumental affair – and titles include "Night Birds", "Easier Said Than Done", "Takin Off", "Light On My Life", "Bitch To The Boys", and "Streetwalkin". Chuwanaga (France), Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rare grooves from the British scene at the start of the 80s – catchy soul-based club tunes, served up in the same generation as Level 42 and Shakatak, but a lot more obscure overall! The music here has the UK artists really hitting their stride – no longer just copying American soul modes, and really coming up with some inventive elements in both the rhythms and instrumentation – often not as raw as the "funk" in the title might make you think, but still with lots of the richer currents borrowed from jazz funk of the previous years! And while you might know some of the bigger names of this scene – like Light Of The World or Hi-Tension, the music here is much more obscure! Titles on this second volume include "Send Me Your Love" by Cruzial, "School" by Stikki Stuff, "Funksters" by The Breakfast Band, "Energy" by Yeow Band, "Keep On Searching For Your Love" by Scratch, and "City Girls" by Potion.
