Bobby Shad & The Bad MenBobby Shad & The Bad Men ... CD
Mainstream/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. Used ... $14.99
The only album to ever credit producer Bob Shad as a leader – even though the man had been behind so many famous records on labels that include Mainstream, Time, and Mercury! This set has Shad taking the hip vibe of the Mainstream label to the forefront – mixing funky jazz and trippier rock touches together beautifully – blending Mainstream's worlds of psych and soul in a tremendous way – as he turns out these fresh new takes on big tunes from the time – all redone here as fuzzy instrumentals! The great Ron Frangipane handled arrangements – and titles include "Whole Lotta Love", "Pinball Wizard", "I Want You Back", "Instant Karma", and "No Time". CD

Smoking tenor sax from Paul Quinichette – heard here in a small group of Basie bandmates, but in a setting that also has all the players stretch out a lot more than usual! Benny Aronov with Bob Brookmeyer & Tom HarrellShadow Box (with bonus track) ... CD
Choice/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A beautiful pairing of horns – the compressed trombone and trumpet sounds of Bob Brookmeyer and Tom Harrell – coming together here in a record that's one of the real standouts from Brookmeyer's 70s years, and a key demonstration of the young powers that would really make Harrell shine in later decades! The players have a way of blowing that's almost a great 70s update of 50s modern modes – a clear thought to the way they'd work together, but with a more fluid, soulful energy too. Rhythm is just the right kind of easygoing to make the whole thing gel wonderfully – thanks to strong leadership from pianist Benny Aronov – and titles include "Shadow Box", "Marchons", "On A Theme Of Debussy", "Water's Edge", "Upper Manhattan Medical Group", and "Passages". CD features a bonus alternate take of "I Have A Dream". CD

Ars NovaFields Of People – The Elektra & Atlantic Recordings 1968/1969 (Ars Nova/Sunshine & Shadows) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of great albums from the overlooked Ars Nova – back to back in a single set! First up is the 1968 self-titled Ars Nova – a wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! Titles include "Album In Your Mind", "Pavan For My Lady", "General Clover Ends A War", "And How Am I To Know", "Fields Of People", "Automatic Love", and "Song To The City". Sunshine & Shadows is the second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Injection/PTG (France), 1985. New Copy ... $10.99
A lost 80s groover from The Netherlands – one that's done in a style that's very similar to American soul work of the time, but which also has a nice sparkly finish that's got traces of UK 80s soul! The keyboards are very nicely placed in the set – never too strong, and with some jazzy flourishes that help deepen the feel of the set, and maintain a warm stepping midtempo groove. Tracks include "Flying High", "Feelgood", "Where Are You Now", "Funky Nights", "Never Gonna Let You Go", "Shadows Of The Night", and "Who Will Be The One". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Shadows Of The Night (club mix)" and "Feelgood (extended mix)". CD

Vanessa FreemanShades ... CD
Chilli Funk (UK), 2004. Used ... $3.99
One of the strongest albums to come out of the London scene in years – and a stunning debut from vocalist Vanessa Freeman! Vanessa's vocals have been bubbling out of some great singles in recent years, but here she steps forth as a major talent with a fully-formed set – produced in collaboration with the great Phil Asher, and grooving in a very solid Restless Soul mode! The record's got a much more solid soul-based approach than some of the other recent sets on Chilifunk – as Vanessa's firmly in control of each tune, guiding them with her massively soulful vocals – some of the best we've heard since Carleen Anderson's early work with the Young Disciples! The set also features lots of keyboards by Mark De Clive-Lowe and Kaidi Tatham – and titles include "Shades", "Dawning Of A New Day", "Hang Tight", "Cover Me", "Life Line", "Who Are You", and "Fresh & Wild". GRP, 1982. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
Dave Grusin's definitely out of the shadows here – after years of session work, soundtrack music, and other arrangements – finally beginning to shine in the limelight as a jazz musician on his own! The set's got a nice sort of vibe – not the too-smooth later sound of the GRP label, and instead this nice balance of electric keyboards and acoustic piano – delivered with help from key contemporaries who include Lee Ritenour on guitar and Steve Gadd on drums! Production is nicely understated – and titles include the mellow stepper "Serengeti Walk", plus "Last Train To Paradiso", "She Could Be Mine", "Crystal Morning", "Hokkaido", and "Sweetwater Nights". ✨✧ Johnny Hodges3 Shades Of Blue ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... $13.99
An excellent late Johnny Hodges album that mixes his supreme talents with two of the other big stars of the Flying Dutchman label – Oliver Nelson and Leon Thomas – both of whom contribute wonderfully to the set! Nelson arranged the whole album, and gives it the groovy feel of some of his best orchestrations from the late 60s – nicely swinging throughout, but also awash in sophisticated colors and tones at the bottom! Leon Thomas sings vocals on a few cuts, and although he's a little straighter than on his own recordings, or the records he did with Pharoah Sanders, he still gives the set a hip sound that's a great change from the usual Johnny Hodges record – especially some of his 60s sessions with Wild Bill Davis. Hodges is great throughout, and the best tracks include "Yearning", "Welcome To New York", "Disillusion Blues", and Nelson's great "Black, Brown, & Beautiful" – plus a hip vocal take on "Dukes Place". CD

✨✧ LaBelleMoon Shadow ... LP
Warner, 1972. Near Mint- ... $34.99
One of the greatest albums ever by Labelle – known especially for the massive funky title cut, which has been an in-demand groover for years! "Moonshadow" begins with a nice funky piano intro, then rolls into a 10 minute groove that's really tasty – filled with lots of jazzy riffing, tasty conga, and a weird monologue by Patti that runs through different parts of the body and why you should appreciate them! The cut was lost on American audiences of the 70s, but became a huge one in the European jazz dance scene of the late 80s, probably because most of them couldn't understand how silly Patti's vocals were! The cut's nice and funky, though – and there's some other nice ones on the record, too, including "Sunday News", "Touch Me All Over", and "Peace With Yourself". Much more interesting than most of their stuff, with a hip mixture of jazz, soul, and hard grooving! LP, Vinyl record album
(White label stereo promo, includes the Warner inner sleeve and both wrap-around and folded inserts. Cover is lightly wrinkled at the bottom left corner, with a small scrape and some pen imprints on front.)

✨✧ MadlibShades Of Blue – Madlib Invades Blue Note ... CD
Blue Note, 2003. Used ... $5.99
Madlib invades Blue Note! He gets free reign of the catalog for this mix of sampler genius and live band interpretations, too, as/with Ahmad Miller, Yesterdays New Quintet, Malcolm Catto, Medaphoar, and others from the Stones Throw camp. This one's truly a conceptual triumph, if there ever was such a thing – one of the greatest hip hop producers alive, given carte blanche with the source beats of the century! Madlib's Blue Note crates are heavily weighed in the mid 60s through mid 70s electric beats that often get the shaft in mainstream jazz round-ups, but floor the beathead world into overdrive. Re-interpretations, remixes, and revisions are spliced seamlessly with the source samples, creating a whole new world where hip hop and late model live funk not only co-exists with classic Blue Note jazz, but it actually draws a linear transition between the 2 genius art forms. Beautiful stuff – if the album isn't the most original idea to come along all of these years into the hip hop & jazz underground, it's certainly one of the most perfectly realized projects of its kind, ever! It's one for the time capsule – easily one of Madlib's masterpieces, and pure funky sample wizardry by any standard! Includes Monk Higgins' "Slim's Return" interpreted by Ahmad Miller and DJ Lord Such on cuts, "Donald Byrd's "Distant Land", "Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Bounce", Yesterday's New Quintet's adaptation of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints", Madlib Invazion's "Funky Blue Note", the Joe McDuphrey Experience take on Horace Silver's/Herbie Hancock's "Peace/Dolphin Dance" and lots more. Sun RaDancing Shadows (aka Nothing Is) ... CD
Magic Music (Germany), 1966. Used ... $14.99
One of the best non-Saturn Sun Ra albums of the 60s – material recorded live on a tour of New York colleges in 1966, and very much in a spirit that captures the Arkestra at their best! Longer tracks are juxtaposed nicely with shorter ones – in a way that has the group running very outside one minute, yet stepping soulfully back to the center the next – never schizophrenicly, but in a mode that really displays the full range of energy pulsing in the group. Interesting instrumentation on the set includes Ra on clavoline, plus Carl Nimrod on the beautiful-sounding "sun horn" – and other players include Marshall Allen on alto, John Gilmore on tenor, Pat Patrick on baritone, and James Jacson on log drum and flute. Shades Of BrownS.O.B. ... CD
Cadet/Dusty Groove, 1970. Used ... $9.99
Amazing soul from Chess Records – and an album that almost feels like some lost small-label soul set, or a batch of rare funky 45s! Shades Of Brown are an ultra-hip male group from Chicago – a quartet of singers with the range and depth of The Temptations or Dells at their best, supported by a small combo of very lively instrumentalists who bring a really funky edge to their music – that sort of self-contained sound than you might find more in the hinterlands of the 60s soul scene than at Chess. But there's also plenty of key Chess touches too – including production by Dells maestro Bobby Miller, who also penned all the tunes for the record, giving the group some wonderful material to work with. Richard Evans handled most of the arrangements, but Charles Stepney also did a few too – and titles include "Man's Worst Enemy", "Girl I'm Coming Home", "Falling In Love Too Hard", "Lite Y'All Up", "Lie #2", "Little Girl", "Ho-Hum World", "He Didn't Leave Me A Name", "Garbage Man", and "The Soil I Tilled For You" – which has an amazing break! Clark Terry with Al GreyShades Of Blues ... CD
Challenge/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1994. New Copy ... $16.99
Late work from trumpeter Clark Terry, but the kind of record that really lives up to his long legacy of specially-shaped sounds from his instrument – matched here by superb work from Al Grey on trombone! Terry always has this great way of evoking a mouthy, gritty vibe from his horn, while still delivering a clear, clean sound – and a great vision for a solo, even in a compact space – and that's carried forward here by very strong work from Al Grey, a player who didn't always get his chance to sparkle this much in later years! The group's got another great feature – no drums, just the bass of Marcus McLaurine and piano of Charles Fox – leaving plenty of open room for improvisation, and even more reliance on the inherently rhythmic styles of both hornmen. Titles include "Hooties Blues", "Greazy Blues", "Cool Vibes", "Sluggo", "Hip Hat Blues", and "The View From Glencove". CD

Elvis Costello has given us his own detailed account of his life and music – but before that well-circulated volume was released, Grame Thomson did a pretty great job with this one – using his years of experience as a music journalist to plumb the depths of the man and his recordings! The book is as hefty as Costello's own – and goes into great detail on both his personal and musical life, but all with a care that gets far past any gossipy or salacious tone. If you've read Elvis' own book on these years, this one provides a fascinating counterpart – and the book is 440 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. Book

Prestige, 1975. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A key early pairing of saxophonist Gary Bartz and producer Larry Mizell – working here together before their more famous collaboration on Capitol Records, in a sound that's even more freewheeling and open-ended! Bartz still has a bit of an edge in his horn here – the style laid down heavily on his NTU Troop records from a few years before – and Mizell takes that edge and runs with it nicely, helping Gary to focus his rhythms a bit more, and reach out with some really wonderful electric sounds! Hubert Eaves plays keyboards here – and Mizell brings in a bit too – and the blend of keys and reeds is really great, with that double-edged depth that makes Gary Bartz so great on his best albums! There's lots of great cuts with an airy Mizell feel to them, including "Love Tones", "Gentle Smiles (Saxy)", "Sea Gypsy", and "Winding Roads". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1972. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Ornette Coleman's best recordings from the 70s – and like his other album for Columbia, quite a change from the freewheeling sounds he was blowing over at Blue Note! The style here is a bit more high concept, but in a good way – with all the edges that Coleman had developed from the late 50s onward, brought into tighter focus for the Columbia setting – given a bit more complexity, although still with plenty of room for freedom – and played both with a smaller combo, and a slightly larger group. The mix of players is as striking as the sounds on the record – and includes Coleman on alto, trumpet, and violin – plus Dewey Redman on tenor, Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Bobby Bradford on trumpet, Jim Hall on guitar, Cedar Walton on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins and Ed Blackwell on drums. Asha Pulthi sings a bit on the larger ensemble tracks – making a rare appearance here before her 70s soul career in Germany – and titles include "What Reason Could I Give", "Street Woman", "The Jungle Is A Skycraper", and "All My Life". 2CD set also features all the material from the Broken Shadows album as well – plus 3 previously unissued bonus tracks. A mighty helping of music from the overlooked Mitty Collier – a 60s soul singer on Chess Records, and one who was every bit as great as bigger label stars like Etta James or Fontella Bass! Like both of those singers, Mitty's got a voice that grabs you right from the get-go – a deeply soulful approach to her music that's really fresh and without cliche – especially considering she got her start belting out tunes years before some of the bigger names in 60s female soul, and managed to keep things mighty real all the years she was working at Chess. Production and arrangements here are all top shelf – handled by Phil Wright, Riley Hampton, and others – and the CD offers up 24 gems from Mitty's years at Chess – the a-sides of all 15 singles cut for the label, plus 9 more great tunes from the flips! Titles include "Everybody Makes A Mistake Sometimes", "Gotta Get Away From It All", "I've Got Love", "I Had A Talk With My Man", "Walk Away", "My Party", "Sharing You", "That'll Be Good Enough For Me", "Git Out", "Watching & Waiting", "Like Only Yesterday", "No Faith No Love", "I'm Your Part Time Love", and "Miss Loneliness". ✨✧ GrayShades Of Gray (3LP set) ... LP
Ubiquity, 1979. New Copy 3LPs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A legendary industrial project from the New York scene – a group that features artist Jean Michel Basquiat on vocals – plus Michael Holman and Nick Taylor on vocals, keyboards, and a lot of processing and effects! Instrumentation includes a guitar with a metal file, making tape and steel ball bearings, and lots of odd, unusual, pre-industrial sounds! There's occasional moments of found sound samples, blended with the other elements at a level that's almost more UK post-punk, but with the occasional old school hip hop sensibility – all as dark and moody as the group's name, and surprisingly strong after all these years. The record was so much a genre-crossing effort it was a bit lost at the time, but has since gone on to be the stuff of legend – and titles include "The Man Who", "Gauntlet Of Wrigglys", "Eight Hour Religion", "Figure It Out For Yourself", and "The Mysterious Ashley Bickerton". This 3LP set expands the original record with some remixes from King Britt, Tewz, Hank Shocklee, Todd Rundgren, Gaslamp Killer, and Sal P of Liquid Liquid – plus appearances by Amir Yaghmai and Kool Keith! ✨✧ Keith JarrettShades ... LP
ABC/Impulse, 1976. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lost gem from Keith's "with horns" period – a quintet session from the mid 70s, recorded with a group that features Dewey Redman on tenor, plus Charlie Haden on bass, Paul Motian on drums and percussion, and Guilherme Franco on additional percussion. The feel is a bit straighter than Jarrett's excellent Death & The Flower set – as the tunes have a highly rhythmic component, and make good use of the extra percussion to create a flowing, organic groove. There's still a nice loose feel overall, though – almost a take on the loft jazz sound, especially at the moments when Jarrett goes a bit outside on piano. Titles include "Shades Of Jazz", "Southern Smiles", "Rose Petals", and "Diatribe". LP, Vinyl record album

A double-length set that showcases the ever-growing, ever-evolving talents of drummer Quin Kirchner – working here in a variety of settings with help from some other great talents on the Chicago scene! Most of these tunes have a core sense of structure – and even when Quin is improvising more freely, he still finds a way to swing – working here on conventional drums, other percussion instruments, and even a bit of kalimba too – alongside a mix of players that includes Nick Broste on trombone, Nate Lepine on tenor and flute, Nick Mazzarella on alto, Jason Stein on bass clarinet, Greg Ward on alto, Rob Clearfield on piano, and Matt Ulery on bass. Many numbers have a spacious, ambitious vibe – almost spiritual jazz, of a quality that really has us respecting Kirchner more than ever – and the double space of the album is really needed to allow this majestic message the room to unfold properly. Titles include "Ecliptics", "King Korn", "Jupiter Moon", "Horizons", "At This Point In Time", "Bata Chop", "Pathways", "Star Cluster", and "Moon Vision". CD

✨✧ LA ExpressLA Express/Shadow Play ... CD
Epic/BGO (UK), 1976. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of jazz funk classics from this group who got their start with reedman Tom Scott! First up is the self-titled LA Express – funky fusion with a bit of a studio feel – played by the LA Express, a combo best known for their work with Tom Scott – stepping out here strongly on their own! Even without Scott's sax in the lead, the sound here is still pretty darn sharp – and the lineup features Robben Ford on guitars, Victor Feldman on keyboards, Max Bennett on bass, and John Guerin on drums and percussion – plus saxophones from David Luell, who kind of steps in where Scott left off! There's some nice jamming that's on the tighter side of the CTI sound – with lots of choppy sax lines from Luell over sweet electric rhythms – and titles include "The Shrug", "Stairs", "Cry Of The Jungle", "It's Happening Right Now", "Western Horizon", and "Down The Middle". Shadow Play is proof that the group could stand strongly on their own away from former leader Tom Scott! This time around, the sound is a bit more built-up than before – put together with a slight dose of soul in the mix, which really warms things up from the sharper sound of their debut! The album features vocals on 3 numbers – wonderful wordless scatting from Joni Mitchell on the track "Nordic Winds" – which almost comes across like a rare Euro fusion cut from the time – and straighter soulful singing from Paulette McWilliams on the tunes "Double Your Pleasure" and "Dance The Night Away". Players include Victor Feldman on keyboards and percussion, David Luell on saxes, Peter Maunu on guitar, Max Bennett on bass, and John Guerin on drums – and other titles include "Shadow Play", "Chariot Race", "Velvet Lady", "Mad Drums & Englishman", and "Vortex". ✨✧ Harold LandNew Shade Of Blue ... CD
Mainstream/Solid (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An overlooked chapter in the Harold Land/Bobby Hutcherson partnership that recorded more famously for Blue Note – a date that's issued here under the tenorist's own name, but which also features equal contributions from Hutcherson on vibes! Tracks have that long, modal quality that has the pair almost birthing a whole new generation in jazz expression – a style that's more sophisticated than earlier soul jazz, yet equally soulful in its own sort of way – aware of all the freedoms of the avant scene, yet never fully indulgent of them – and always guided by a spirit set loose by Coltrane, but in ways that are very different than so many others in the post-Coltrane generation! Part of that difference might be Land's personal phrasing on tenor – or Hutcherson's amazing approach to vibes – both without any sort of comparison at all, and set up here in a group that features Bill Henderson on acoustic and electric piano, Buster Williams on bass, Billy Hart on drums, and Mtume on congas. The latter gets his own song named on the record – the great "Mtume" – and other titles include "Short Subject", "Ode To Angela", and "De-Liberation". CD

Alternative Fox (UK), 1959. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great early moment for the legendary Charles Mingus – music that was used in the equally-legendary film Shadows – the first directorial effort from a young John Cassavetes! The album's worth it alone for the unusual piece "Untitled Percussion Composition" – one of the loosest, sparest Mingus moments ever – and a work that features Charles on both piano and percussion, alongside more percussion from Dannie Richmond, Horace Parlan, Jimmy Knepper, and Clarence Shaw – with a sublime flute solo from Shafi Hadi over the top! The rest of the tracks are more familiar moments from the key Mingus year of 1959 – played by groups with John Handy on alto, Booker Ervin and Shafi Hadi on tenor, and either Richard Wyands or Horace Parlan on piano – on the titles "Self Portrait In Three Colors", "Nostalgia In Times Square", and "Alice's Wonderland" – plus an "Untitled Percussion Composition". The three or four shades of the blues here are all pretty darn deep – as Charles Mingus is returning to the soulful gospel-influenced mode he swung big in the early 60s! The record's something of a later predecessor of the classics Blues & Roots for Atlantic and Mingus (x5) for Impulse – and the style is slightly less dramatic, but still quite steeped in soulful explorations that feature plenty of notes from the bluer side of the spectrum! Players include George Coleman and Ricky Ford on tenor, Jack Walrath on trumpet, and Larry Coryell on guitar – and titles include new takes on "Better Git Hit In Your Soul" and "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" – plus"Nobody Knows", "Noddin Ya Head Blues", and "Three Or Four Shades Of Blues". Ubiquity, 2009. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fractured avant funk, raw leftfield soul, and jittery, unpredictable bits of electronics on the outer edges – all with a human heartbeat and real depth of emotion – the best stuff yet from East Bay groover Nino Moschella! Nino is combining off kilter sound washes and true blue funk & soul better than ever before – from bedroom beatcraft with bubbling synth and tripped out vocals, to emotive soul baring numbers with horns, guitar, keys and all around fuller arrangements – it's all solid stuff, and he's clearly having a great time – while still getting over a genuine sense of soul. Titles include the gem "We Fight, a really great tune, starting out in a laidback funky soul mode that gets deeper and deeper, with some sweeter vocal accompaniment courtesy Fanny Franklin – and the album's a winner all the way! Titles include "Sleep", "Time Of Day", "We Fight", "Looking At Your Face", "Continue To Call", "Running", "Stella", "Something Like?", "What U Do 2 Me", "All Round The World" and "I Love Myself". One of Lou Rawls' last albums for Philly International, and a really nice departure from the style of Lou's earlier hits for the label. It's got a sophisticated jazzy mode that has Rawls often singing with sparer piano backings than the fuller strings of the late 70s – in a way that's sort of a return to the jazziness of some of his roots. A number of tracks are standards or familiar 70s numbers, done in modes that run from bluesy soul to mellower jazz vocals. ✨✧ Freddie ReddShades Of Redd (RVG remaster edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note, 1960. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An exquisite bit of modernist hardbop – recorded by Freddie Redd with the same sort of sound that he brought to the classic Connection recording, also done for Blue Note! As with that session, Redd is working here with alto from a young Jackie McLean's on alto sax – really at the top of his powers here, and beautifully skirting a line that runs between soulful hardbop and some of the more modern phrasing McLean would use during his "new thing" years! Tina Brooks is on tenor, and as on other classic Blue Notes – such as the Street Singer album – the Brooks/McLean combination makes for some stellar solo work throughout. Redd's piano is firey in a way that we can hardly describe, and tracks include "Thespian", "Melanie", and "Shadows". This CD reissue also includes a few bonus cuts – alternate takes of "Melanie" and "Ole". CD

David's definitely graduated to the big time by this point in his career – and works here with help from Paul Jackson and Lee Ritenour on guitars, George Howard on soprano sax, Ernie Watts on tenor, and Harvey Mason on drums – and the set also features a fair bit of vocal numbers, mostly sung by Bob Carlisle, with a nicely soulful vibe – although a young Dianne Reeves sings on one number too. Smooth and soulful guitar work from Cornell Dupree – a player who recorded on countless sessions as a studio sideman, but hardly ever got to work as a leader on his own! Both albums here have a full sound that's kind of a step beyond the Kudu/CTI sound of the time – an approach that takes larger orchestrations and uses them as the backdrop for Dupree's work on guitar, often with a fair bit of keyboard support from Mario Sprouse who arranged both albums on the set. The fullness resonates with the funky dancefloor style of David Matthews during the same stretch – a bit commercial at times, but still with plenty of nice instrumental touches – and the CD features all tracks from both albums Dupree recorded for the Versatile label, a total of 14 tracks that include "The Creeper", "Two Doors Down", "Peg", "Lovely Day", "Boogie Nights", "The Closer I Get To You", "On & On", "Hey Girl", and "Shake It Well". ✨✧ Grant GreenShades Of Green ... LP
Blue Note, 1972. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A stellar album from Grant Green – very different than most of his other work for Blue Note, and a sly electric groover recorded with vibist Billy Wooten! The sound here is a bit more spacious than some of Grant's earlier albums, yet no less funky – thanks to a hip undercurrent of soul in the drums, and arrangements from Wade Marcus that keep things fluid throughout. Wooten's vibes are wonderful, a ringing counterpoint to Green's great lines on guitar – and even the more familiar tunes on the record turn out to be really unique readings here – thanks to the arrangements and overall conception. Mellow moments are dripping with plenty of soul, and the funky ones are pretty great too – and titles include a killer medley of James Brown's "I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing" and "Cold Sweat", a heavy version of his instrumental groover "In The Middle", and a great original called "California Green" – plus "Never My Love", "Sunrise Sunset", "Got To Be There", and "If You Really Love Me". Blue Note/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 2003. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
On The Less You Know, The Better, Josh Davis flirts with the beats, scratches and mood altering soundscapes of his early work at a few points, but he really tackles wide sylistic breadth here – including fuzzed out rock guitars over frenetic beats, spacey folk funk, darkness tinged new wave, timelessly brilliant rap. Dot, 1957. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Dreamy vocal work from Bonnie Guitar – a singer with a bit of a country tinge, but a jazzy feel as well! The album's got a laidback and mellow feel that fits perfectly with the title – moonlight, with just a hint of shadow – a blue undercurrent that comes from Bonnie's nice deep-toned approach on vocals. The backings are by Jack Fascinato, but are a bit more sensitive than some of Jack's work with Tennessee Ernie Ford – not as playful, but still with a great sense of sound overall – one that's a bit echoey, and which makes a great setting for Bonnie's voice. Titles include "Moonlight On The Colorado", "Moonlight & Roses", "The Moon Is Low", "Roll Along Kentucky Moon", "Get Out & Get Under The Moon", and "Moonlight & Shadows". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label mono pressing. Cover has some wear and a center split in the top and bottom seams.)

✨✧ This Mortal CoilFiligree & Shadow ... LP
4AD (UK), 1986. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from This Mortal Coil – only the second album by the 4AD Records collective, but one that doubles the length of the first – and explores some even deeper territory in the process! The group take songs that had been forgotten from previous generations – beautiful nuggets of 60s and 70s rock, folk, and underground music – and weave them together in a moody soundscape that's full of echoey piano, rich cello, edgey oboe, and all these other elements that were never used in the original songs. Add to that some original material, and the spacious 4AD production style, and you've got an instant classic – full of gems that include "Tarantula", "The Jeweler", "My Father", "Morning Glory", "Inch Blue", "Drugs", "Red Rain", "I Want To Live", "Come Here My Love", and "Fire Brothers". Joshua Abrams & Natural Information SocietyMandatory Reality ... CD
Eremite, 2019. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99
A really fantastic album from bassist Joshua Abrams – a set that may well be his greatest to date – and that's saying a lot, given all the other work he's given us in recent years! The double-length set has Abrams working with this lineup of improvising jazz talents, but in a way that's very rhythmic, and very organic – slow-building songs that almost seem to mix jazz with inspiration from gamelan music, but with very spiritual currents overall – music that builds slowly and flows to the cosmos – almost in a way that reminds us of the seminal "On The Beach" by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Yet Abrams is very much in his own territory here – working with a lineup that features the leader on guimbri, Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and gongs, Mikel Avery on tam-tam and gongs, Ben Boye on electric autoharp and piano, Hamid Drake on tabla and tar, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, Nick Mazzarella on alto saxophone, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet – with every member of the ensemble also performing on flutes. The sound is incredible – music to build a bridge to the heavens – and titles include "In Memory's Prism", "Finite", "Shadow Conductor", and "Agree". CD

Nat AdderleyGood Company ... CD
Challenge/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1994. New Copy ... $16.99
The legendary Nat Adderley is definitely in good company here – a group with excellent work on alto from Antonio Hart – a player who comes off in a very different way than the famous alto of Nat's late brother, Cannonball! Antonio seems to open up some nicely dark currents in Adderley's music – underscored by the piano work of Rob Bargard, who can do a great job of shading things in from below – while the whole group moves with great rhythm work from the team of Walter Booker on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Tunes include two great Bargard originals – "Rob's New Tune" and "War Zone" – plus versions of "Rwanda", "Sermonette", "Corcovado", and "Unit Seven". CD

Rodrigo Amado with Peter EvansFreedom Principle ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 2014. New Copy ... $9.99
The title definitely lives up to the sound of the record – a really loose, free session from a quartet that includes strong work from both trumpeter Peter Evans and tenorist Rodrigo Amado – the latter of whom leads the group! All tracks are long, and build with a nice degree of energy – one that gets back to the "freedom principle" generation between the ESP and loft jazz years – when spontaneous creativity like this was really in action. All four members contribute equally to shape the sound of the performance – and the group also features Miguel Mira on cello and Garbirel Ferrandini on drums. Titles include "Pepper Packed", "Shadows", and "The Freedom Principle". CD

✨✧ Ant Trip Ceremony24 Hours ... CD
Cicadelic, 1968. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
A college band, but one with an amazing sound that should have made them huge – had they managed to survive graduation time at Oberlin College! For a combo out in the sticks of Ohio, these guys sound pretty darn great (but let's also not forget that Oberlin's given us Liz Phair, John McIntire, and plenty of other key talents over the years) – and they're a fuzzy little group with a warmly laidback feel to their music – kind of folk-psych, produced here with a nicely naive sort of sensibility. The tunes are every bit as great as better-known work coming out of the New York or LA scenes of the time, and they're quite surprising for their maturity and power overall – as even familiar numbers are way more than just simple covers in the hands of the group. Titles include "Four In The Morning", "Violets Of Dawn", "Hey Joe", "Outskirts", "Elaborations", "Pale Shades Of Gray", and "What's The Matter Now". CD

✨✧ Roy AyersPerfection ... CD
Aim (Australia), 2001. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
A recent bit of work from Roy Ayers – but still plenty darn great, and proof that the vibes master hasn't faltered at all over the years! The set was initially released briefly by Roy in 2001, but is getting its proper debut here – and has Ayers working in a mostly instrumental mode that layers his live work on vibes over beats and more programmed rhythm tracks. The sound is plenty darn soulful – sweetly jazzy, deeply soulful, and filled with those unusual colors, tones, and shades that instantly mark the work as Roy's own – a unique approach to vibes that few other players have ever been able to match! Titles include "Drome", "Ears", "Steppin", "Wave", "Thick & Thin", "Perfection", "Afro", "Smoke", "Bags", and "Calm". CD

A career-spanning set of work from the Beastie Boys – one that features tracks from both their Def Jam and Capitol/Grand Royal years – in a way that really shows the continuing evolution of their sound! The tracklist is great – classics from every generation, and the kind of cuts that maybe hold up more strongly than some of their others as the years go by – a 20-track testament to the genius and wit that set them apart from the pack! ✨✧ Beastie BoysPaul's Boutique (180 gram colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Capitol, 1989. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $31.99 35.99
The Beasties' masterpiece – and one of the original nightmares for sampling opponents everywhere – the cut & paste hip hop classic Paul's Boutique! The Dust Brothers unapologetic way of weaving very famous samples with soul, funk and film score obscurities would steal the show if not for the infectious, boisterous rhymes of the Beastie Boys – they couldn't possibly have cared less about alienating the massive frat boy fan base built with License To Ill, and it's a joy to behold. It's one of those mindblowing pop transformations on par with the Beatles (who the Beasties and Dust Brothers were so brazen to sample several times on this album) and the Beach Boys on the pop maturation scale from earlier hits to later artistry – even if the wild lyrics and deft back & forth rhymes by the Beasties aim to be the goofy antithesis of maturity. From classic rock dinosaurs to soul and disco classics, from the Jaws score to "Dueling Banjos", it all finds it's way into the beatcraft – and both mainstream pop and underground hip hop are better now because of this record. Tracks include "Hey Ladies", "Shake Your Rump", "High Plains Drifter", "Shadrach", "Johnny Ryall", "Eggman", "Car Thief", "What Comes Around", the "B-Boy Bouillabaisse" suite and more. Art Blakey/Modern Jazz QuartetArt Blakey's Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk/Blues At Carnegie Hall ... CD
Collectables, 1958/1967. Used ... $6.99
An unlikely pairing of albums, but another nice 2-fer of classic Atlantic sides. The Jazz Messengers album is a great one – and features the firey hardbop of Blakey's late 50's Messengers (with Johnny Griffin and Bill Hardman) meeting the modernist piano playing of Monk, who was really hitting his stride at this point on his own Riverside recordings. The session's an interesting one, and if it lacks the groove of the usual Blakey album, Monk more than makes up for any lack of soulfulness by throwing in some nice complicated piano lines. We still prefer Bobby Timmons to Monk with Blakey – but the album's worth having, and includes nice Monk tracks like "Evidence", "Blue Monk", "I Mean You", and "Purple Shades". The MJQ session's a live one, and features the usual tightly arranged chamber jazz approach. Tracks on that one include "Bag's Groove", "Blues Milanese", "Pyramid", and "The Cylinder". CD

Blank BlueWestern Water Music Vol 2 ... CD
Ubiquity, 2008. Used ... $1.99
A compelling new project from Nobody – quite different from his previous work, and very much in tuneful territory – thanks to help from vocalist Niki Randa! The style here is somewhat subtle – well-crafted tunes that shimmer in shadows of soundshapes – almost atmospheric, but with a bit more structure than the usual downtempo pop of this nature – and Niki's vocals are a big part of this, as they help bring form to Nobody's sounds in some really nice ways. The album's got some dark undercurrents that still echo a previous Nobody vibe – and titles include "A New Design", "Eyes Closed", "Sonic What", "All The Shallow Deep", "Circles In Circles", and "Faces". Jewel/Paula, Early 70s. Used ... $1.99
By this point in his career, Charles has come a long way from his "Drifting Blues" hit of earlier years – but he's still one heck of a singer, and in a modern soul/blues format like this, it's interesting to hear him sound like singers like Mose Allison, on whom he had an undeniable effect. The group's a small combo with some wah wah and fuzzy guitar, and Charles is probably the one playing piano. Peabo Bryson & Roberta FlackBorn To Love ... LP
Capitol, 1983. Near Mint- ... $3.99
The beautiful full scale duets set from Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack – a record that's no doubt defined by it's biggest hit – but the rest is just as great! Born To Love kicks off with "Tonight I Celebrate My Love For You" – a song that's doubtlessly one of the most inescapable slow dance classics ever – and if its ubiquity overshadows the rest of the record, that's not because it's any less excellent! Peabo's affectionate style is in top form here, and Roberta is such a perfect duet partner – with plenty of lead moments of her own. It definitely feels like a perfectly balanced partnership. The record's got some lovely slow jams on par with the aforementioned pop soul standard, plus some great ones that up the tempo a little bit. Other titles include "Blame It On Me", "Born To Love", "Heaven Above Me", "Comin' Alive", "Can We Find Love Again", "You're Looking Like Love To Me" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

BunalimBunalim ... CD
Shadoks, Early 70s. Used ... $14.99
The bass is right out front in the picture of the band on the cover – and it's also right out front in the sound of their music as well – helping to drive the rhythms of this Turkish combo with a rolling sound that's almost funky at times! Bunalim hail from the same Turkish scene as Erkin Koray – and the group's founding bassist also played on Koray's classic Elektronik Turkuler – a record that's quite similar to this one with its mix of Turkish roots, psychedelic roots, and trippy production! And although the group is represented here with material recorded over a 3 year period, with a shifting instrumental lineup – there's still a core sound that's really unified, with plenty of great Andalusian elements in the mix! Titles include "Basak Saclim", "Bunalim", "Tas Var Kopek Yok", "Yollar", "Yeter Artik Kadin", "Guzel", "Ayrilik Olmasaydi", and "Bir Dunya Da Bana Ver". CD
