Jamel ShabazzJamel Shabazz – Albums (hardcover) ... Book
Steidl (Germany), 2023. New Copy ... $34.99 50.00
The biggest book we've ever seen to focus on the photography of Jamel Shabazz – a Brooklyn photographer who was out on the streets in the glory days of the old school – famous for his work capturing key sides of the early hip hop scene, and plenty of other New York culture as well! The book follows strongly from other volumes to collect the work of Shabazz – like Back In The Day and Time Before Crack – but the presentation is a bit different, as each page represents a page in one of Jamel's photo albums – usually with a few different color photographs on each page, often in arrays that bring together images from a single location or which have a way of resonating with each other. Subject matter is similar to other books of the photos of Shabazz – lots of early 80s New York street scenes and street portraits – and the huge book comes with a few essays on the work as well. Hardcover, 320 pages, and full color throughout – with hundreds of images! Book

✨✧ Shabazz PalacesQuazarz – Born On A Gangster Star ... CD
Sub Pop, 2017. Used ... Out Of Stock
Shabazz Palaces takes spacey hip hop further out then they've every done before, while still somehow holding ground in hazy, headnodding beats and rhymes – delivering 2 separate albums loosely centered around a cosmic character called Quazarz! Far out as concept is and as thickly atmospheric as the vocals are record, Born On A Gangster Star and Quazarz Vs The Jealous Machines still manage to come across as some of the most immediately accessible music the duo have recorded to date – but still a far murkier, moodier outer space experience than Ishmael Butler's pioneering legendary work with jazz rap pioneers Digable Planets or the underrated Cherrywine. Includes "Since CAYA", "When Cats Claw", "Shine A Light" feat Thaddillac, "Deese Du Sang", "Eel Dreams" feat Loud Eyes Lou, "Parallax" feat The Palaceer Lazaro, "The Neurchem Mixalogue", "That's How City Life Goes", "Moon Whip Quaz" feat Darrius and "Federalist Papers". Billy CobhamShabazz – Recorded Live In Europe ... LP
Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Heavy-jamming fusion from Billy Cobham – done at a time when he was already cutting plenty of heavy-jamming fusion! The album was recorded live in Switzerland and London – all very much in a post Bitches Brew approach to jazz that has all players going pedal to the metal in pursuit of their ends – thankfully working together well here, and really propelled into the cosmos by Billy's mighty work on the drums! Players include John Abercrombie, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, and Milcho Leviv – and the tracks are all long, with titles that include "Red Baron (Revisited)", "Tenth Pinn", "Shabazz", and "Tauranian Matador (revisited)". Diamond & The Psychotic NeuroticsStunts, Blunts, & Hip Hop ... LP
Mercury/Get On Down, 1992. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $23.99 27.98
A 90s hip hop masterpiece from Diamond D – and like some of the rest of the best of the decade, a set that was slightly slept-on at the time, but which has gone to have massive impact over the decades – still sounding completely fresh in comparison to bigger hits of the time! Diamond D comes from the same DITC underground as Showbiz & AG, Big L, and Lord Finesse – and like those others, when he got his time in the spotlight, he really took off – with beats that had an influence on so much more to come – and a very collaborative spirit that opens the door for contributions from Fat Joe, Mark The 45 King, Brand Nubian, Lakim Shabazz, and some of his old partners in DITC. Titles include the classic "Best Kept Secret" – with its fantastic Kool & The Gang sample – plus "Sally Got A One Track Mind", "I'm Outta Here," "Check One Two", "Freestyle", "Stunts Blunts & Hip Hop", "Pass Dat S**t", "What You Seek", "Confused", "A Day In The Life", "Step To Me", and "Shut The *!*! Up". LP, Vinyl record album

Warp, 2019. Used ... $6.99
Fantastic sounds from Flying Lotus – an artist who just keeps on pushing past any conventional expectations, to a point where his music is almost a genre unto itself! The record's got this very tripped-out sort of vibe – very much in keeping with the image on the cover – and while many others are exploring this territory of late, few ever even get close to the right sort of mix that's going on here – subtle elements of soul, funk, jazz, hip hop, and maybe a million other influences – all flowing through the double-length space of the set, as it Flying Lotus redefines the sound of soul in the modern age. The set's got guest work from Thundercat, Shabazz Palaces, David Lynch, George Clinton, Anderson Paak, Little Dragon, Solange, and others – and titles include "Post Requisite", "Takashi", "Spontaneous", "More", "Burning Down The House", "Actually Virtual", "Find Your Own Way Home", "The Climb", "Debbie Is Depressed", "Black BAloons Reprise", and "Land Of Honey". Impulse, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Arguably the most classic Alice Coltrane album on Impulse – and a strong group effort that features some great work from Pharoah Sanders! Coltrane leads two different small combos on the record – both with Sanders on saxes, plus either Cecil McBee or Charlie Haden on bass, and Rashied Ali on drums – plus assorted percussion from Tulsi and Majid Shabazz, and some really enigmatic work on oud by Vishnu Wood! Tracks are long and drawn out, and open with the beauty of a field of flowers meeting the dawn – as Alice plays with a sound that's gentle and poetic, but which also has some wonderfully dark undertones. Titles include "Stopover Bombay", "Isis & Osiris", "Shiva-Loka", and "Journey In Satchidananda". CD

Tommy Boy, 1991. Used ... Out Of Stock
The breakthrough second album from Naughty By Nature (who recorded formerly as The New Style) – one of the key groups to emerge from the New Jersey scene at the end of the 80s, and be able to give the world of New York hip hop a run for its money! Queen Latifah championed the group right from the start, and gave them a solid footing on Tommy Boy – a perfect label for the group to balance their commercial appeal and well-penned rhymes – at a level that makes this album at least a rock-solid entry in the key canon of the true school generation! Latifah makes an appearance on the record – as do Lakim Shabazz and Apache – on cuts that include the classic "OPP", plus "Ghetto Bastard", "Guard Your Grill", "123", "Wickedest Man Alive", "Everyday All Day", "Strike A Nerve", "Let The Ho's Go", "Pin The Tail On The Donkey", "Rhyme'll Shine On", and "Thankx For Sleepwalking". ✨✧ David ScheinbaumHip Hop – Portraits Of An Urban Hymn (hardcover) ... Book
Damiani (Italy), 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We're not normally the biggest fans of hip hop photo books, but this one really does a great job of breaking the mold – by featuring excellent photographs of live performers and their audiences by David Scheinbaum – and interspersing the images with writings by Michael Eric Dyson, Brian Hardgroove, Gaye Theresa Johnson, and others! The book's got a nicely poetic feel – and although contemporary, some of the images almost have a timeless feel that recalls the Back In The Day book by Jamel Shabazz – while others are abstractions that really change up a conventional mode of hip hop portraiture. Photos are both color and black and white, and the book is 160 pages, hardcover, and done in a very nice style by Damiani Press. Book

✨✧ Sophie BramlyYo – The Early Days Of Hip Hop 1982 to 1984 – Photography By Sophie Bramly ... Book
Soul Jazz (UK), 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic book of images from the early 80s hip hop scene in New York – put together by a photographer who was right on the scene for a number of key years – and snapped hundreds of images of performers, clubs, street scenes, graffiti artists, and all the other forces that made hip hop happen! The book's a bit like the classic Back In The Days by Jamel Shabazz, but it also goes even further – as Bramly managed to capture a heck of a lot of key DJs and rappers, and also includes comments and memories from many of them too – snippets of text that are every bit as essential as the images – although the images are more than enough on their own! Bramly's got a great eye – both for a key moment, and composition within the frame – and the book is stuffed with images throughout, both color and black and white – in a hefty softcover volume that's over 300 pages in length.
