✨✧ Sha La DasLove In The Wind ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The cover sticker bills this one as sounding like a lost collaboration between the Beach Boys and Delfonics – although for our money, we'd lean a bit more towards the latter – as the Sha La Das have a surprisingly strong approach to harmony soul! Instrumentation and production are much leaner than Brian Wilson ever would have used – more in the Daptone mode you'd expect from the label, and from the great backings from the Menahan Street Band – who are wonderfully restrained here, and really just let the vocals of the quartet shine through in a mighty nice way! None of these guys is as strong as Poogie Hart of The Delfonics (but then again – who could be?) – yet the group really absorbs the best spirit of those days when harmony soul sounded best in a spare indie label setting – which is exactly the way that Daptone presents them. Titles include "Open My Eyes", "Just For A Minute", "Okay My Love", "Those Years Are Over", "Do What", "Carnival", and "You Never Know Whether". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Charles BradleyChanges (with download) ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Jaw-dropping work from Charles Bradley – a stunning album that's maybe his best so far – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given the quality of his previous work! There's a focus and power here that really puts Charles on top – from the bold statement at the start of the record, to the range of expressive, emotive lyrics all the way through – given superb support in a range of deep soul and funky currents from the likes of Budos Band, Menehan Street Band, Gospel Queens, Saun & Starr, and Sha La Das! Yet none of these guests ever feel like they're sharing the spotlight with Charles – because, like the James Brown Show of the late 60s, all these super-strong talents are working in constellation around Bradley's majesty – a bold soul vision that's never burned this brightly before. Titles include "Ain't It A Sin", "Nobody But You", "Good To Be Back Home", "Things We Do For Love", "Crazy Love", and "Slow Love" – plus a cover of Black Sabbath's "Changes". LP, Vinyl record album

Jack MarshallMunster Go Home (with bonus tracks) ... CD
La La Land/Universal, 1966. New Copy ... $19.99
A really great soundtrack from Jack Marshall – the groovy arranger you might know from a host of Capitol Records albums in the early 60s – stepping out here on a film that marked the movie debut of Herman Munster! The music echoes some of the themes you'd hear on the Munsters TV show – but also opens up with all these other scene-setting and comedy action modes that vary nicely – handled by a great group that includes plenty of guitar work from Bob Bain and Howard Roberts! The electric guitar often gets some great space in the charts – either to pace out the slower action, or step up more with the groovier moments – and Chuck Berghofer also gets plenty of space to shine on electric bass. It's Marshall's use of the electric instruments that really make the whole thing great – on a set of 23 titles that include "Ridin & Racin", "Cash Dash Hash", "Off To The Races", "Gate Crashers", "Racy Romance", "Grandpa's Goof", and "Heroic Herman". Dom La NenaEla ... CD
Six Degrees, 2012. Used ... $6.99
A beautiful debut from this up-and-coming Brazilian singer – put together with a really timeless feel that comes through in both the vocals and instrumentation! Dom's got a breathy way of singing – a style that takes us back to older French modes by artists like Jane Birkin and Brigitte Fontaine – and she also plays a fair bit of cello and acoustic piano on the record, shading in the tunes with this subtle acoustic sort of darkness that's mighty nice – picked up by co-producer Piers Faccini, and given little tweaks around the edges – in a creative pairing that's almost like some of the Benjamin Biolay projects in recent years! The set's got a surprising amount of depth – a lot more so than other Six Degrees albums – and the record's got an appeal that goes way past just contemporary Brazilian music. Titles include "Sambinha", "Conto De Fadas", "Anjo Gabriel", "No Meu Pais", "Batuque", "Ela", and "Menina Dos Olhos Azuis". CD

✨✧ Peter Brotzmann/Adasiewicz/Edwards/NobleMental Shake ... CD
OTOroku (UK), 2014. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant free improvisation from a really great lineup – a quartet that brings together the legendary reed work of Peter Brotzmann and the vibes of Jason Adasiewicz – already great enough on their own, but matched here with the bass of John Edwards and drums of Steve Noble – the latter of whom we know for his fantastic rhythms in Rip Rig & Panic! Noble's drums have these earthy tones that are quite different from the usual drummer on a free improv gig – and the vibes of Adasiewicz ring out strongly with this inspiration. Brotzmann's got a real fire, but also a focus too – blowing strongly and soulfully on alto, tenor, b flat clarinet, and tarogato – and Edwards works in an understated by powerful way to keep the energy moving forward. One long improvisation – worthy of old school classic status – more ESP than FMP! CD

Balona E Seu ConjuntoGarota De Ipanema ... CD
Paladium/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1967. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
A rare one from 60s Brazil – and a really great small combo bossa session with some very unusual instrumentation! At their core, the Balona group seem to be a bossa piano trio – but many tracks here have a little "something else" – vibes, electric guitar, or trumpet – often used sparingly but with enough punch to really help shade in the sound of the tunes, even with a few jagged notes. A few numbers have harmony vocals – ala Tamba Trio, but perhaps a bit less modern – and the overall sound is pretty darn great! Titles include "Balonadas", "Aurora", "Meu Balanco", "Balanco 67", "Insensatez", "Tema Para Dois", "Vem Menina", "Duas Contas", and "Ceu E Mar". CD

Al StewartYear Of The Cat ... LP
Janus, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $8.99
The biggest record that Al Stewart ever cut – as you no doubt know from the oft-played title track – but a set that also stands as a great testament to all the many years he'd been crafting fine music before fully getting the recognition he deserved! Stewart's got a way with words that's like few of his contemporaries – maybe a bit like Donovan, with whom he shares a similar vocal approach – and also a clear early love of Bob Dylan, yet an immediate evolution past that influence – so that the whole thing is very much in a world of Al's own, with some slight 70s mainstream production, but not enough to soften the music into more mainstream AOR – despite the fame of the hit. Titles include, of course, "Year Of The Cat", plus "One Stage Before", "Flying Sorcery", "Broadway Hotel", "Lord Grenville", "If It Doesn't Come Naturally Leave It", and "Midas Shadow". Ace (UK), Late 50s/1960s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A wonderful compilation of Lee Hazlewood songs performed by others in the 60s – magnificent pulp pop, girl groups, starlets, rockers and more covering prime era Lee tunes – songs about lovers, fools, rebels and heartbroken examples of all of the above! Features Lee duets with Nancy Sinatra & Suzi Jane Hokum, and covers by Duane Eddy, The Hondas, The Darlenes, Al Casey, Sanford Clark, Ann Margaret, The Wildcats, Dino, Desi & Billy, The Sharps, Peggy March and many more1 25 tracks in all: "Lady Bird' by Nancy & Lee, "Sweet Ride" by Dusty Springfield, "You Turned My Head" by Ann Margaret, "Don't Look Now, But I've Got The Blues" by BB King, "(I'm Afraid) You'll Hurt Me" by The Darlenes, "The City Never Sleeps At Night" by The Shacklefords, "Guitar On My Mind" by Duane & Miriam Eddy, "Das Ist Zauberei (And I Loved You Then)" by Peggy March, "Twelve Feet High" by The Hondas and many more. ✨✧ Muddy WatersAfter The Rain ... LP
Cadet/Get On Down, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A gem of a record from the funk-heavy period of Muddy Waters – a moment that once made the traditional blues fans mad, but which has gone onto become the stuff of legend – thanks to a real criss-crossing of Chicago talents in the studio! The set was co-produced by Chess Records talents Charles Stepney, Gene Barge, and Marshall Chess – and features expanded instrumentation that includes Phil Upchurch on added guitar, Louis Satterfield on bass, Charles Stepney on organ, and Morris Jennings on drums – plus even more guitar from Pete Cosey, who you might know from later work on some Miles Davis electric albums! Muddy is still very firmly the lead talent at the core, though – coming across with a badass kind of vibe that mixes his raw roots with the hipper soul of the new generation – a great Chess/Cadet hybird that was years ahead of its time. Titles include "I Am The Blues", "Hurtin Soul", "Bottom Of The Sea", "Honey Bee", "Rollin' And Tumblin'", "Screamin & Cryin", and "Blues & Trouble". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousFoolish Fool/Herbsman Reggae (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1970. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A pair of classic Clancy Eccles-produced compilations from the start of the 70s – issued here with plenty of bonus tracks too! Foolish Fool was initially billed to Cynthia Richards, the great singer who delivers the leadoff title tune – but the real start of the set is maybe Clancy Eccles, as the tracks here are all from the hand of the legendary producer – and really show the way that rocksteady was moving towards some of the tighter, sharper rhythms that would mark the early days of reggae! All the singers are as great as Richards – and titles include "Don't Look Back" and "Here Comes The Night" by Busty Brown, "Don't Mind Me" and "Mademoiselle" by Joe Higgs, "Foolish Fool" and "Conversation" by Cynthia Richards, "Feel The Rhythm" and "Africa" by Clancy Eccles, and "Revival" by The Dynamites. Herbsman Reggae is a set that more clearly foregrounds the work of Clancy Eccles in the lead – and one that also gives plenty of credit to the great Dynamites band on most of these tracks – a wicked quintet with Winston Wright on organ, Hucks Brown on guitar, and Gladdy Adams on piano! The rhythms are hard, the production is wonderful – all spacey and weird – and the record has this beautiful unified mix of vocals and instrumentals, a number with some cool pre-dub use of echo. Tracks include "Herbsman Shuffle" by King Stitt & Andy Capp, "Black Beret" and "Phantom" by The Dynamites, "Promise" by Cynthia Richards, "See Me (take 2)" by Earl George, "False Nyah" by Barry & The Affections, "The Ugly One" by King Stitt, and "Senor Judas" by Clancy Eccles & The Dynamites. This fantastic 2CD reissue also includes 34 bonus tracks – more Eccles productions of work by The Westmorlites, Barrington Sadler, The Dingle Brothers, Glen & Roy, Carlton Wedderburn, Carl Dawkins, and many others. 56 tracks in all! ✨✧ VariousMinimal Wave Tapes Vol 1 ... LP
Minimal Wave/Stones Throw, Late 70s/Early 80s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Sparsely furnished underground new wave from Europe and North America in the early 80s – the first official Minimal Wave compilation from Veronica Vasicka's Minimal Wave label and the arbiters leftfield funky errata at Stones Throw! This is some of the deepest and rarest music from the nascent electro rock and post punk electronic underground of the 80s – most purportedly released on scarcely distributed cassettes, if they were ever really distributed at all beyond the hands of the artists involved – which is fascinating and everything, but the real story here is the exceptional quality. It's incredible stuff! The sound is impeccable, those primitive synth melodies and drum machine rhythms sounding sharp and clear. The songs are great, too, maybe a bit darker edged than the mainstream of the time, and without the cheesy and poorly aging pop sheen of the hits, but we have no doubt the artists here could have been stars had the material reached the right people. It's all wholly ripe for discovery and we already can't wait for Volume 2! Titles include "Way Out Of Living" by Linear Movement, "Flying Turns" by Crash Course In Science, ""Tempus Fugit" by Tara Cross, "Mickey, Please" by Bene Gesserit, "Reassurance Ritual" by Das Ding, "Radiance" by Oppenheimer Analysis, "Who's Really Listening" by Mark Lane, "The Cabinet" by Das Kabinette and more. 14 tracks in all. A masterful set of improvisations from a quartet who can move at so many different levels and speeds – sometimes very spacious and sensitive, other times with a ferocity that shows that they've really found their footing together as a unit! Nate Wooley is on trumpet, and is often at his best slow-shaping mode here – as is Liudas Mockunas on bass clarinet, sopranino, and tenor – both players who may well be inspired by the careful creations on bass of Barry Guy, then taken to more intense territory by the drums of Arkadijus Gostesmanas. The lineup shifts with each track, as do the horns handled by Mockunas – who blows tenor and soprano sax – plus a very cool "water prepared soprano sax" – in the company of Akira Sakata on clarinet and alto, Masayo Koketsu on alto, Eiichi Hayashi on alto, Yoshihide Otomo on guitar, and Kazutoki Umezu on bass clarinet, alto, and soprano! All tracks are nice and long, and filled with the sort of sharp reed interplay you'd know from both the music of Mockunas or Sakata – on titles that include "Brown Line", "Green Line", "Red Line", "Blue Line", and "Yellow Line". Some of the earliest work ever recorded by Lester Bowie as a leader – and a set that stands in importance right next to the early Delmark AACM sides by Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell! Plus, the album's almost an early Art Ensemble of Chicago effort, given the lineup – which features Bowie on trumpet and flugelhorn; Roscoe Mitchell on alto, soprano, clarinet, and flute; Malachi Favors on bass; and Joseph Jarman on alto, sopranino, and clarinet!. The session was cut in 1967 by Chuck Nessa, and it features performances of the tracks "Number 1" and "Number 2" – very much in the Art Ensemble mode, with alternating instrumentation, sharp attacks and spare moments, plus a good dash of humor! An incredible album from Moreno Veloso – the son of the famous Caetano, but an artist who's already very much his own man on this classic collaboration with the team of Kassin and Domenico! Moreno plays it cool on most of the record – singing in a spare setting that mixes acoustic guitar and percussion with some occasional electronics, sounding best on the tracks that are the most stripped-down, because if he does share one thing with his father, it's a warmly intimate voice, one that will grab you right away! The electronics are all a bit ok, but it's the voice that sells this one – and it fortunately comes to the forefront on most of the record. A fantastic collection of work from a real golden age in hip hop – a period that you'll probably guess from the image of the Native Tongues posse on the front – served up here in a compilation that brings together classics from De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers, Monie Love, and many others! The set list is superb – and while most of the tracks are well-remembered gems, and not the kind of rare cuts we usually hear from Ace Records – taken together, they're a tremendous reminder of a time when hip hop really came alive – bursting with wit, wisdom, and a whole new sense of musical imagination! As usual with Ace, the liner notes and other details are great – making this way more than just a slap-dash mix of hits – and titles include "You're Not Coming Home (Mase's funkay recall mix)" by Groove Garden, "Age Ain't Nothin But A #" by Chi Ali, "Bonita Applebum" by Tribe Called Quest, "Sunshine Men" by Freestyle Fellowship, "Peachfuzz" by KMD, "K Sera Sera" by Justin Warfield, "It's A Shame" by Monie Love, "Doin Our Own Dang" by Jungle Brothers, "OPP" by Naughty By Nature, "Doowutchyalike" by Digital Underground, "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays" by De La Soul, "The Choice Is Yours" by Black Sheep, "All For One" by Brand Nubian, "My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style" by Dream Warriors, "Mama Gave Birth To The Soul Children" by Queen Latifah with De La Soul, "Where I'm From" by Digable Planets, and "We Run Things (It's Like Dat)" by Da Bush Babees. The set's done in collaboration with husband/drummer Tutty Moreno – and the pair lead a small combo with a nicely jazzy feel that further enforces the freely soaring lines in Joyce's vocals! It certainly was time – time for Jackie McLean to break out of his older bop mode, and hit a whole new level of playing with a tight group of "new thing" compatriots like Herbie Hancock on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Charles Tolliver on trumpet! The record isn't as totally "out there" as some of his other ones from this period, but it's a seminal release in Jackie's modernist period – and it's one of the hardest to find from the era. Filled with warmly wonderful original compositions like "Revillot", "Snuff", "Truth", and "Das Dat" – the record is unpacked and remodeled nicely by the trio of young players, aided by Jackie's moody alto, and given a great spin by Roy Haynes on drums. ✨✧ Bobby WomackI Don't Know What The World Is Coming To ... LP
United Artists, 1975. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The cover and the title are a great illustration of the growth of Bobby Womack on this classic 70s set – a mode of presentation that's maybe a bit more badass than before, without the down-home image of Bobby holding his guitar! Some aspects of the record are plenty darn righteous – and live up to the social commentary of the title – and these are mixed with Womack's rootsy vocals in a way that's really unique – almost as if a Marvin Gaye message album was crafted down in Memphis or Muscle Shoals. Some bits of the record are almost blackploitation funk in their use of wicked keyboards, sharp guitar, and larger charts – and the tunes blend together in this very cool way that really makes the whole set fit together nicely. Womack's voice is fantastic, as always – and titles include "Put Something Down On It", "What's Your World", "Git It", "I Don't Know", "Jealous Love", and 2 very nice "Interlude" tracks! ✨✧ VariousErnest Chahoud Presents Taitu – Soul Fueled Stompers From 1960s/1970s Ethiopia (3LP set) ... LP
BBE (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection of Ethiopian funk – rare singles from the late 60s and early 70s – all brought together as an amazing illustration of a time when the scene was really on fire! The music here has this incredible resonance between ancient and modern – local and global – as older instrumental modes and singing styles get inflected with drums, basslines, and horn parts that are strongly influenced by American funk and soul – all at a level that makes for one of the most mindblowing mixes of music you'll ever hear! The "stompers" in the title is very well-chosen – as many of these grooves are maybe even more floor-shaking than conventional funk – with a different rhythmic structure than American styles, but an end result that's even more powerful overall. Titles include "Ewnetegna Feker" by Hirut Bekele, "Endiet Zengeshiw" by Selomon Shibeshi, "Alkedashim" by Birkineh Wurga, "Hasabe" by Teshome Meteku, "Mela Mela" by Seifu Hohannes, "Sigibgib Joroye" by Tilahun Gessesse, "Fikrishin Eshaleyu" by Getatchew Kassa, "Alagegnhwatem" by Muluken Melesse, "Ene Yewodedquat" by Tamrat Molla, "Felagote" by Bezunesh Bekele & Bodyguard Band, "Temeles" by Hirut Bekele & Alemayehu Eshete, and "Teleyeshign" by Merawi Yohannis. ✨✧ Orquestra ImperialCarnaval So Ano Que Vem ... CD
Som Livre (Brazil), 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
A long-awaited release by an incredible Brazilian group – an ensemble made up of some of our favorite contemporary artists from the scene – including the trio of Moreno Veloso, Domenico, and Kassin! The style here is somewhat like work from those three, but also somewhat more traditional too – rooted in warmer, jazzier tones that stretch back to the bossa, and which have some echoes of samba too – all handled with a personal, almost spontaneous feel at times – even though it's clear that the group's put a lot of thought into the way they want their sound to work. Other members of the orchestra include Pedro Sa, Bartolo, Nina Becker, Thalma De Freitas, Bidu Cordeiro, and Wilson Das Neves – and titles include "O Mar E O Ar", "Nao Foi Em Vao", "Erecao", "Jardim De Alah", "Rue De Mes Souvenirs", "Yarusha Djaruba", "Ela Rebola", and "De Um Amor Em Paz". ✨✧ VariousLittle Heart Attacks From North Carolina – Rockabilly & Rock N Roll From Little Oak Records (10 inch LP, booklet, & CD set) ... LP
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very cool little package – one that comes in a 10" record jacket, features a 10" record, and also a bonus booklet of notes and a CD with lots more music too – all to document the ultra-rare Oak Records label – a small company that put out some real killers at the end of the 50s! Oak was a tiny imprint way out in tobacco country in North Carolina, but they had a great ear for some homegrown talent who really knew how to knock a tune out in the studio – the kind of cuts that would leap right from the grooves of an indie 45, at a level that's made these gems some top-shelf treasures for collectors over the years. The package features 12 tracks on the LP, 25 on the CD, and comes with a full color booklet of notes and images, telling the Oak Records story – alongside cuts that include "My Honey My Honda" by Frank Rice, "Haystack Rock & Roll" by P Jay & The Haystackers, "Little Heart Attacks" by Glenn Johnson & The Acorns, "Sweet Thing" by Bobby Green & The Sportsmen, "Run Here Honey" by Glenn Johnson & The Acorns, "Liza Jane Bop" by Don Hager & The Hot Tots, "Dr Nack's Tom Cat" by Frank Rice, "Bermudas" by Big Jay Mercer, "Little Heart Attacks" by Bobby Green & The Sportsmen, and "Sure Is A Cryin Shame" by Big Jay Mercer.
