Serge GainsbourgEn Studio Avec Serge Gainsbourg (3CD set) ... CD
Universal (France), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
A treasure trove of rare work from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg – studio outtakes, alternate versions, and lots of other material that stands as a great addition to the catalog of one of the coolest, grooviest French language singers ever! This 3CD set is overflowing with gems – and CD1 brings together rare tracks by Serge himself – some from 45 or LP projects, but presented here in different modes that stand as a wonderful complement to some of the versions you might know – almost like a "part 2" or extended take in some cases. Titles include "Black Trombone (avec intro)", "L'Homme A Tete De Chou (instrumental)", "Sea Sex & Sun (extrait des prises voix", "Chez Les Yeye (prise complete)", "L'Eau A La Bouche (avec intro)", "69 Annee Erotique (instrumental)", and two very long tracks – "Melody (prise complete)" and "Lola Roastaquoouere (instrumental)". CD2 features various interpretations of Serge's songs – many of which were produced by Serge himself, and a few of which even feature vocals by Gainsbourg! The music spans the space of his early Latin and jazzy work, through his slinky sexy 60s and 70s years, to his final burst of great music in the early 80s. Titles include "J'Ai Deja Donne" by Jacques Dutronc, "Les P'Tits Papiers" by Regine, "Les Papillons Noirs" by Michele Arnaud, "Mambo Miam Miam" by Los Goragueros, "Le Sixieme Sens" by Juliette Greco, "L'Oiseau De Paradis" by Zizi Jeanmarie, "Les Petits Boudins" by Dominique Walter, "Le Mal Interieur" by Isabelle Adjani, "Plus Dous Avec Moi" by Charlotte Gainsbourg, and "Le Drapeau Noir" by Mirelle Darc. CD3 features great music that Serge Gainsbourg did for a variety of cinematic projects – music that's every bit as groovy as his own vocal tunes, and which often appear here in instrumental takes that let you focus even more strongly on his great sense of a funky bit and a groove! Titles include "Milena (instrumental)", "L'Eau A La Bouche (avec intro)", "Requiem Pour Un Con (instrumental)", "First Class Ticket (prise alternative)", "Les Chemins De Katmandou (generique)", "Le Village A L'Aube", "Discophoteque (rough mix)", and "Le Physique Et La Figure (version complete)", plus Anna Karina singing "Roller Girl". Serge GainsbourgLes Plus Belles Chansons De Serge Gainsbourg ... CD
Clarton, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $4.99 14.99
Maybe not the most beautiful songs ever sung by Serge Gainsbourg, but a great collection of the early material that instantly set him apart from any other singer in France – material that's heavy on influences from American jazz and Latin modes, but which also has a very Parisian sense of wit overall! Serge is already breaking plenty of ground here with the subject matter – and has a way of singing that's much more modern than other postwar vocalists – not nearly as emotive, and with this sense of distance that somehow manages to give his music even that much more bite. The set features 40 tracks in all – including some early soundtrack material – and titles include "L'Amour A La Papa", "La Nuit D'Octobre", "La Chanson De Prevert", "Ronsard 58", "Ce Mortel Ennui", "Du Jazz Dans Le Ravin", "L'Alcool", "Intoxicated Man", "Les Cigarillos", "Personne", "Adieu Creature", "La Femme Des Uns Sous Le Corps Des Autres", "L'Eau A La Boche", "Chanson De Magile", "Judith", and "Indifferente". Serge GainsbourgLove On The Beat ... CD
Philips (France), 1984. Used ... $6.99
One of Serge Gainsbourg's biggest international albums – and kind of an 80s update of his earlier erotic sound! There's something of a clubby vibe to the record – and most of the album was recorded in the US, with a fair bit of synthesizer and guitar, in kind of a colder post-new wave groove. Titles include a few great later classics – his remake of "Harley David, Son Of A Bitch", which really broke Serge to a whole new generation of listeners – plus his classic duet with daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg on the great "Lemon Incest" – one of the best songs ever about the virtues of father/daughter love! Other titles include "Sorry Angel", "I'm The Boy", "Kiss Me Hardy", "No Comment", and "Hmm Hmm Hmm". CD

Serge GainsbourgTenue De Soiree ... LP
Apache (France), 1986. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
An overlooked Serge Gainsbourg soundtrack from the 80s – surprisingly well-done, and at a level that both reflects Serge's earlier styles and a much deeper ear for film scoring! There's a main theme that's delivered with this beautifully echoey piano line – sometimes playful, sometimes somber – almost like a melody from a Francis Lai film score – and balanced with some more stylized 80s elements that reflect the instrumental sounds in Gainsbourg's own records of the time – almost a reworking of older 70s trash modes, but towards more comedic ends for the film. The piano passages are especially wonderful – and a real revelation, as they show an emotive quality we don't normally associate with Serge – and titles include "Travelo", "Traverse", "Traveste", "Trave", "Travaux", "Traviolta One", "Travelling", and "Travers". Serge Gainsbourg & Jean Claude VannierLes Chemins De Katmandou ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A lost chapter in the legendary legacy of music from the team of Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier – the pair who created Serge's fantastic Melody Nelson album, and also did the funky soundtracks for the films Cannabis, La Horse, and Sex Shop! This set is every bit as groovy as those classics, but has been lost for years – because the master tapes were reportedly lost, and have only just recently been discovered – which makes the whole thing a 21st Century treasure from these two 60s maestros! The music is great – funky at times, jazzy at others – with elements that include tablas and sitar, funky bass, fuzzy guitar, heavy drums, and sweet clavinet – all used with that mindblowing melange that Vannier could cook up in the studio – so that even some of the familiar elements come out sounding very fresh and new. The film was also issued under the names Road To Kathmandu and The Pleasure Pit – and titles include "Opium Den", "Overdose", "Flower Child", "The Pleasure Pit", "Cache Cache", "Fallen Rainbow", and the tune "Colin Maillard" – a great funky number that's done in both vocal and instrumental versions. Philips/Mercury (France), 1980. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic live set from Serge Gainsbourg – and a record that stands as a concert accompaniment to his famous albums Aux Armes Et Cetera and Mauvaises Nouvelles Des Etoiles – both done in a reggae mode with work from Sly & Robbie! The famous Jamaican duo are part of the group here – with Sly Dunbar on drums and Robbie Shakespeare on bass – working with Ansel Collins on Hammond on Fender Rhodes and Mao Chung on guitar – which makes for a great little combo that really gets the sound right! If you haven't heard Gainsbourg in this mode, you're in for a treat – as the slow-stepping Jamaican rhythms provide a really fresh foil for his spoken, slinky vocals – transformed especially here on the remakes of the older tracks. Titles include "Brigade Des Stups", "Les Locataires", "Elle Est Si", "Pas Long Feu", "Lola Rastaquouere", "Javanaise Remake", "Bonnie & Clyde", "Relaxe Baby Be Cool", "Marilou Reggae Dub", and "Des Laids Des Laids". New version features unissued bonus tracks – "Daisy Temple" and "Docteur Jekyll Et Monsieur Hyde". CD

Unreleased material from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg – recorded for French radio in the 60s, and with a different style than some of his more familiar studio work! Gone are the large, full arrangements – and in their place is an intimate approach that has Serge on piano alongside his vocals – delivering his original tunes in a way that's very personal, and maybe even edgier than usual, and completely charming overall! A few cuts add in bass and guitar – and the set features versions of "Les Goemons", "La Javanaise", "Le Rock De Nerval", "Le Talkie Walkie", "Intoxicated Man", "Ces Petits Riens", and "Elaeudanla Teiteia". Universal (France), Late 50s/1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The coolest collection we've ever seen to focus on the soundtrack work of the great Serge Gainsbourg – and the most complete as well! The package really digs deep – and seems to offer up tracks from just about every single film that Gainsbourg was involved with – from his own compositions, to partnerships with greats like Alain Goraguer, Michel Colombier, and the mighty Jean-Claude Vannier – all of whom come up with very groovy, often funky instrumentation that rivals Serge's own releases! In fact, we might well even say that we find the Gainsbourg soundtrack material to be even cooler – as the films often gave Serge a chance to experiment, and try out new ideas he wouldn't do on his own records. This LP package is a great distillation of the larger CD set, with a focus on the grooviest cuts – and includes selections from the films L'Eau A La Bouche, Manon 70, Anna, Si Jetais Un Espion, Le Pacha, Slogan, Une Vueve En Or, and Les Chemins De Katmandou. An incredible collaboration between Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot – one of Serge's first duet albums ever – and a gem all the way through! In the year before he cut "Je T'aime Moi Non Plus" with Jane Birkin, Serge recorded this great album with Brigitte Bardot in which he worked out many of the same ideas. The album is probably best known for the track "Bonnie & Clyde" – which has been sampled to great fame over the years – but there's loads of other great tracks on here, with a mix of styles that joins Serge's jazzy years with his softcore 70s work – very cool, very groovy, and years ahead of its time. Some tracks are duets, and some are sung individually by Serge or Brigitte, but they're all great, and titles include "Intoxicated Man", "L'eau A La Bouche", "Un Jour Comme Un Autre", "Comic Strip", and more! Arrangements by Alain Gourager, Michel Colombier, and Claude Bolling – and the cover's got a great shot of Serge & BB as Bonnie & Clyde! LP, Vinyl record album

A very cool little collection – one that not just offers up a huge amount of important early work by the legendary Serge Gainsbourg – but a set that also includes a fair bit of his contemporaries singing his songs! When Serge first sprang onto the scene in the late 50s, he brought a new sort of edge to Parisian pop – a sense of danger and power that was different than some of the bluer-tinged modes of some of his predecessors – and the special quality of Gainsbourg's songs also led to many others recording his music – some up-and-coming artists like himself, others older artists who were taken up by Serge's new sort of energy. The 4CD set features a whopping 80 tracks in all – 48 by Gainsbourg, plus more by Juliette Greco, Brigitte Bardot, Michele Arnaud, Jean Claude Pascal, Hugues Aufray, Gloria Lasso, Alain Goraguer, and others. Brigitte BardotLa Belle Et Le Blues ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Brigitte Bardot's best known on these shores as an actress, but during the 60s she cut some really fantastic work on the scene in Paris – including a fair bit of groovers that were done with help from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg! Bardot provided a fantastic new voice in the world of pop music – a singer who was unabashedly open about her desires, and very different than the more melancholy stars of a few years before – a quality that's further emphasized by the wonderfully groovy instrumentation used on most of these tracks! Production and arrangements are superb – and put this music in the best territory of the grooviest 60s French pop by artists like Serge Gainsbourg, France Gall, Jacques Dutronc, and a rare few others. This is the first-ever English-annotated collection of work from the period – and features a whopping 25 tracks from her recordings for Philips and Disc AZ – titles that include "Harley Davidson", "Contact", "Neu Au Soleil", "Je Danse Donc Je Suis", "La Madrague", "Les Hommes Endormis", "Je Voudrais Perdre La Memoire", "Mr Sun", "Le Diable Est Anglais", "Tu Es Venu Mon Amour", "John Et Michel", "Gang Gang", and duets with Serge Gainsbourg on "Bonnie & Clyde" and "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus". Rock-solid work from the mighty Benjamin Biolay – one of the few contemporary French talents who moves us as much as his counterparts from the 60s scene – and an artist who's maybe now got a legacy that's even larger than some of his earlier heroes! The album's got a sound that's as sharp and striking as its cover – well-penned tunes by Biolay, served up with inventive production, and a great ear for the sorts of tunes that work perfectly with Benjamin's oft-whispered vocals – a mode certainly inherited from Serge Gainsbourg's Melody Nelson years, but taken into directions that have definitely made Biolay his own artist over the years. Titles include "Visage Pale", "Ou Est Passe La Tendresse", "Souviens Toi L'Ete Dernier", "Vendredi", "Grand Prix", and "Ideogrammes". CD

One of the grooviest albums ever by this baroque French arranger! Michel Colombier has cut some pretty great stuff in his time – but this album's probably the greatest, and it swings with a bouncy late 60s French pop sound that recalls some of the hippest work of Serge Gainsbourg, Michel Legrand, and others. Serge co-wrote two of the songs on the set – and the style of the work has heavy bass and percussion mixed with bouncy orchestrations and hiply swinging vocals in French, sometimes solo, sometimes in a jaunty ensemble mode. The record is great – one you'll put right up at the top of your pile of grooviest groovy French pop from the 60s – and titles include "Lobellia", "Suite No 12", "Turlututu Capot Pointu", "Le Labyrinthe", "Rose", "The Big Team", and "Frere Convers". One of the spookiest soundtracks ever crafted by one of our favorite film composers of all time! Francois DeRoubaix always had this amazing style to his music – unlike anyone else, especially in the way he could blend together spare acoustic elements and unusual sonic and electronic touches! There's a very intimate feel to the record – almost as if Francois is performing most of the sounds in the studio himself – balancing a guitar line with a keyboard fill, a bowed bass bit with drums, soaring strings with trumpet, and so on – occasionally hitting some funky touches that really keep things interesting – and which makes some of DeRoubaix best work on a par with the genius of Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier! Titles include "The Countess Kiss", "Phantom Organ & Piano", "Pursuit On The Dunes Of Ostend", "Accident & Cymbalum", "Love On The Rails", "Red Lips", "Ballad In Bruges", and "The Dunes Of Ostend Flagellation". Also features two bonus tracks not used in the film – "Dracula 68 Woodstock" and "The Bruges Band". A really different groove from El Michels Affair – but one that reminds us again that the group is really amazing at just about anything they ever try to do! The adult themes here are modes borrowed from older European styles – some of the slinky funk of Serge Gainsbourg and some of his contemporaries, mixed with maybe a touch of Euro erotic film scoring – but all given that strong undercurrent of funk that we can always expect from Leon Michels and the group – arranged and produced with a really superb quality throughout! The drums are nice and heavy, the basslines sexy and slinky, and there's some occasional wordless female vocals and larger arrangements that really expand the palette of El Michels. Killer Hammond from Polish player Piotr Figiel – a player with a really wonderful sort of groove! The album's got a vibe that's halfway between the Hammond antics of Alan Hawkshaw and the freer lines of American jazzmen like Jimmy Smith or Charles Earland – augmented by other cool production touches at points, which gives the record a very groovy late 60s sort of Euro feel! The vocal group Bemibek sing these cool wordless vocals on the tune "Bit Of Spring Bit Of Summer" – and guitarist Dariusz Kozakiewicz adds a nice degree of fuzz to a few other tunes too – tripping out nicely with Piotr's very fluid lines on the Hammond! There's a bit of strings on a few numbers, bringing in a nice cinematic feel – and titles include "Prelude In E Minor", based on the same Chopin changes as Serge Gainsbourg's "Jane B" – plus "Never On Tuesday", "Breakfast At Midnight", "Away I'll Go", "Absence", and "Piece Of Space". These aren't instrumentals, as almost all of them have vocals – and the package focuses very strongly on material from the late 60s and early 70s – one of our favorite periods ever for film soundtracks! Titles include "La Chanson D'Helene" by Romy Schnieder & Michel Piccoli, "Mic Et Mac" by Anna Karina, "Hard Times" by Mickey Baker & Eileen, "Et Si On Invitait James Dean" by Fred Pallem & Juliette Paquereau, "Barbarella" by Jackie Lee, "Where Did Our Summers Go" by Nicole Croisille, "Mon Enfance Est Un Rubis" by The Swingle Singers, "Ca N'Arrive Qu'Aux Autres" by Michel Polnareff, "Sur Le Boulevard Du Rhum" by Brigitte Bardot, and "Sex Shop" by Serge Gainsbourg. New takes on classic cuts from the glory days of French cinema – either remixed versions of the older tracks, or new constructions completely – brought together in a special celebration of the 20 years of soundtrack reissues in the Ecoutez Le Cinema series! As you'd guess, the focus here is very French – and titles include a remake of "Compartiment Teurs" by Michel Magne, done by DJ Patif; "La Horse (disco rmx)" originally by Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier, handled by Marathon Men's; a version of "Melodie En Sous Sol" by Michel Magne, done by Fred Pallem with alto sax from Remi Sciuto; "Le Samourai Se Remixe", a fresh take on a tune by Francois De Roubaix, done by Nicolas Errera; a cool remake of the Francois De Roubaix tune "L'Homme Orchestra", done with Jean Michel Bernard on arrangements and Hammond; "Fantomas Se Remixe", a remix of Michel Magne's theme for Fantomas by Nicolas Errera; and "Dernier Domicile Connu/Le Mere Est Grande/L'Homme Orchestre" – all tunes by Francois De Roubaix, done in a "Jean-Luc Guitar remix" by Gonzales and Taylor Savvy. Europe 1/Universal (France), 1969. New Copy 2CD ... $6.99 18.99
A very cool look at the sound of 1969 – not as it was on our side of the Atlantic, but as it played out on radio in France! The 2CD set is a very hip mix of music – some French tunes mixed with American and British rock and soul, plus some other European cuts too – all of which makes for a really great sense of surprise, and a vibe that's way way different than the sorts of oldies set you might find in the US market! There's 32 tracks in all – and titles include "La Rua Madureira" by Nino Ferrer, "C'Est Extra" by Leo Ferre, "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus" by Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg, "Wight Is Wight" by Michel Delpech, "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" by Steam, "Tout Eclate Tout Explose" by Claude Francois, "It's Five O'Clock" by Aphrodite's Child, "Eloise" by Barry Ryan, "Only The Strong Survive" by Jerry Butler, "Pierre Et Sarah" by Le Quartet De Lyon, "I Want You Back" by Jackson 5, "Un Jour Un Enfant" by Frida Boccara, "Mother Popcorn" by James Brown, "Ma Vie C'Est Un Manage" by Nicoletta, "River Man" by Nick Drake, and "Ou Est La Fete Suzie" by Herbert Leonard. ✨✧ Jane BirkinDi Doo Dah ... LP
Fontana/Light In The Attic, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet sweet work from Jane Birkin – an early solo set that steps strongly off of her classic duets with Serge Gainsbourg! In a way, this album's as much a record by Serge as it is by Jane – since Serge wrote almost all the tracks, and since the arrangements are handled by the legendary Jean-Claude Vannier – who worked famously with Gainsbourg on Melody Nelson and other funky recordings! The set's got a slow, sexy, funky vibe – very similar to the Gainsbourg/Vannier collaborations – and maybe even sexier, given the way that Jane Birkin handles her breathy vocals. There's some sweet guitar bits that go great with Jane's delivery of the material – and the whole thing's an essential part of the Gainsbourg/Birkin canon. Tracks include "Help Camionneur!", "Banana Boat", "Kawasaki", "Leur Plaisir Sans Moi", and "Les Capotes Anglaises". Amazing LP package – 180 gram vinyl, tip-on jacket, and gatefold with English translations of the lyrics! LP, Vinyl record album

Philips/Third Man, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
France Gall won the Eurovision song contest with the title track of this one – and for good reason too, given that the tune is totally groovy! The rest of the work here really follows suit – romping, jerking, and grooving in that wonderful mix of mod rhythms that made France's 60s material so great – some of the best of the French pop scene at the time, with a sound that's really a cut above on all the numbers here! Backings are by the mighty Alain Gouraguer, who brings in a hip mix of jazz inflections, rocking rhythms, and some of the more sparkling soundtrack elements bubbling in the French 60s scene – all a perfect accompaniment for Gall's catchy girl pop vocals. Titles include "Poupee De Cire Poupee De Son", written by Serge Gainsbourg – plus "Le Coeur Qui Jazze", "Le Premier Chagrin D'Amour", "On T'Avait Prevenue", "Dis A Ton Capitaine", "Nounours", "Laisse Tomber Les Filles", and "Bonne Nuit". A fantastic soundtrack that's maybe even more legendary than the unusual animated film for which it was created – a funky French classic that stands strong in the best tradition of work by Serge Gainsbourg, Jean-Claude Vannier, and Michel Colombier! No surprise, Alain Goraguer is part of the same generation, and did some great early jazzy backings for Serge – but here, his style is much funkier, with lots of sweet keyboard lines, wah wah guitar, and soaring larger orchestrations that really put the whole thing together – clearly one of Alain's best musical moments – and filled with great tunes that include "Le Bracelet", "Deshominisation", "Mort De Draag", "La Femme", "Mira Et Ten", and "Ten Et Medor". Creation (UK), 1987. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first album that Momus recorded for Creation Records – a label that provided him with a much stronger springboard than before – which was perfect for the way the singer blended very offbeat lyrics with compelling mainstream songcraft! Momus was always very different than most of the Brit 80s scene in which he worked – influenced strongly by the French work of singer/songwriters like George Brassens, Jacques Brel, and Serge Gainsbourg – but graced with a very British wit, which made for an especially biting style that worked well with the themes of his songs. Momus has a vocal style that's maybe somewhere in Donovan territory, but sharper – and he draws from a variety of European song modes, fitted to the situation of each individual songs – as you'll hear on classics like "Situation Comedy Blues", "Three Wars", "The Gatecrasher", "Flame Into Being", and the Serge Gainsbourg-like "Closer To You". Universal (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Some of the coolest soundtrack music you'll ever hope to hear – all played by a cat who could equally handle the sitar, guitar, Fender Rhodes, and electronics pictured on the cover! Francois De Roubaix is easily one of our favorite soundtrack composers ever – a French talent at the end of the 60s who never got the same international exposure as some of his countrymen, but who had an ear for odd instrumentation and funky undercurrents that rivals that of Serge Gainsbourg, Michel Colombier, or Jean-Claude Vannier – although we might even be tempted to say that Francois is even more way-out than any of them! This collection really lives up to its "essential" promise – and mixes together weird electronic numbers, bass-heavy funk tracks, jazzy groovers, and lots more – all with arrangements and production that are totally fresh, and which should turn you into the same sort of De Roubaix fanatic that we've been for years. Titles include "Le Samourai", "L'Homme Orchestre", "La Vie A Bord", "Les Caids", "Bataille Navale", "Clara 1939", "Journal De Bord", "Le Rapace", "La Scoumoune", "Dernier Domicile Connu", "Tom/Les Prisonniers", "Adieu L'Ami", and "Far From Dallas". Big Crown, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Enfant", "Villa", "Kill The Lights", "Life Of Pablo", "A Swift Nap", "Munecas", "Rubix", "Hipps", and a number of "Adult Theme" tracks. CD

One of the greatest French female singers of the 60s – presented here in a classic collection of work! If you've gotta dig one gal vocalist of the Parisian scene of the time, Gall is definitely your girl – as her brash, bold style of singing really sums up the hippest, grooviest French styles of the time! Many tracks here were penned by some of the best French arrangers and composers of the period – including a fair bit by Serge Gainsbourg, who really helped Gall find her groove, and moved her from being just another girl singer to one of the more powerful 60s voices in French pop! There's even a few funky numbers in the mix, and the rest mostly have a modly snapping 60s groove – of the sort that's being heavily revived these days – and titles include "Pense A Moi", "Laisse Tomber Les Filles", "Attends Ou Va T'En", "Nous Ne Sommes Pas Des Anges", "Poupee De Cire Poupee De Son", "N'Ecoute Pas Les Idoles", "Baby Pop", "Les Sucettes", "Cet Air-La", "Bebe Requin", and "24/36". A great little package that finally brings together two different musical worlds of the great Alain Goraguer – the man who's maybe best known for providing the sounds for early recordings by Serge Gainsbourg – and an artist who also recorded some great jazz and soundtrack material on the French scene of the late 50s and early 60s! The set's overflowing with music we've never heard from Goraguer before – including a fair bit of instrumental readings of early Gainsbourg tunes – and although Alain had a few entries in the earlier Jazz In Paris CD series, this 3CD set moves way way past those outings, and offers up work in a range of styles – straight jazz, orchestral, cinematic, Latin, and even a few special projects as well. Much of the music has a very cool postwar Parisian vibe – and the CD features The albums Alain Goraguer Et Son Trio No 1, Go Go Goraguer, Slow Et Fox Du Jazz A La Une, Danse Party No 26, Los Goraguers Cha Cha Cha, plus some 45rpm EP releases – as well as albums recorded under the nom-du-recording of Laura Fontaine – plus soundtracks for the films La Piege, J'Irai Cracher Sur Vos Tombes, Les Loups Dans La Bergerie, L'Eau A La Bouche, Les Heriteiers, and Le Bel Age – plus other bits too. 83 tracks in all – plus notes in English and French, and images of the original records too. Rare grooves from the French scene's trippiest years – the kind of cuts that will come as a good addition to your well-played records by Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin! Most of this work is much more obscure, but mostly comes from the same time – the late 60s and early 70s, despite the date range in the title – and the artists are working in an equally explosive approach to French pop – using elements from psychedelic music, electric jazz, and funk – to create these amazing little masterpieces in sound! Even if you don't dig the language, your ears will find plenty here to love – and titles on this sixth volume include "Beginning Of Peter's Journey" by Igor Wakhevitch, "A Pas Demesurement Lents" by Richard Lable, "Coupe De Cristal Peint" by Rene Vallere, "Le Perroquet" by Gilbert Deflez, "Monte Sur Le Toit" by Marco, "Ne Me Parlez Plus De L'Amour" by Isabelle, "Je Reve" by Serge Koolenn & Joelle, "Dis Moi Si" by Presence, "Revolution Qui Dira Ta Couleur" by Patrick Roche, "Chante Dans Ma Maison" by Albin, "Mon Reve Certain" by Edwige, and "Cheval De Troie" by Jean Yves Lievaux. Finders Keepers (UK), 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A baroque instrumental masterpiece from Jean Claude Vannier – Serge Gainsbourg's right hand man at the start of the 70s, and a key figure in the legendary Histoire De Melody Nelson album! The feel here is very much along the lines of work that Serge was doing at the time – larger orchestrations mixed with smaller instrumentation – in a level that's often funky, always baroque, and very much in the best Sexopolis styles of the French pop scene of the time! There's a marked similarity here to some of the work of Michel Colombier – but unlike Colombier, and Gainsbourg, there's no vocals at all on these tracks – and the main genius is carried by Vannier's incredibly arranged strings, rolling rhythms, fuzzy guitars, and dark little soundtrack-styled groove! Some tracks are wonderfully funky, others are moody and tripped-out – and the whole thing's a masterpiece that we'd file right up there with our favorite French work of the time! Titles include "L'Enfanta La Mouche Et Les Allumettes", "Danse Des Mouches Noires Gardes Du Roi", "Mort Du Roi Des Mouches", "Le Papier Tue-Enfant", "Les Garde Volent Au Secours Du Roi", and "Petite Agonie De L'Enfant Assassin".
