Serge GainsbourgA La Maison De La Radio EP (180 gram pressing) ... LP
INA (France), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $22.99
Unreleased material from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg – recorded for French radio in the 60s, and with a different style than some of his more familiar studio work! Gone are the large, full arrangements – and in their place is an intimate approach that has Serge on piano alongside his vocals – delivering his original tunes in a way that's very personal, and maybe even edgier than usual, and completely charming overall! A few cuts add in bass and guitar – and the set features versions of "Les Goemons", "La Javanaise", "Le Rock De Nerval", "Le Talkie Walkie", "Intoxicated Man", "Ces Petits Riens", and "Elaeudanla Teiteia". Serge GainsbourgAux Armes Et Caetera ... CD
Philips (France), 1979. Used ... $6.99
A great little album from Serge – possibly his last truly genius record, and one with a very unusual twist! The album was recorded in Jamaica with production from Sly & Robbie – very much in the late 70s, big-business reggae mode – but done with Serge's usual flair for the lyric. The album's not really a reggae album – more a set of dubby tracks that have a similar feel to some of Serge's other backings during the 70s, with whispered sexy lyrics over the top. The record shouldn't work, but it does – and picks up a sound that's similar to Serge's work on the excellent album L'Homme A Tete Chou! Titles include "Relax Baby Be Cool", "Daisy Temple", "Javanaise Remake", "Pas Long Feu", and "Marilou Reggae Dub". CD

Universal (France), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A treasure trove of rare work from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg – studio outtakes, alternate versions, and lots of other material that stands as a great addition to the catalog of one of the coolest, grooviest French language singers ever! This 3CD set is overflowing with gems – and CD1 brings together rare tracks by Serge himself – some from 45 or LP projects, but presented here in different modes that stand as a wonderful complement to some of the versions you might know – almost like a "part 2" or extended take in some cases. Titles include "Black Trombone (avec intro)", "L'Homme A Tete De Chou (instrumental)", "Sea Sex & Sun (extrait des prises voix", "Chez Les Yeye (prise complete)", "L'Eau A La Bouche (avec intro)", "69 Annee Erotique (instrumental)", and two very long tracks – "Melody (prise complete)" and "Lola Roastaquoouere (instrumental)". CD2 features various interpretations of Serge's songs – many of which were produced by Serge himself, and a few of which even feature vocals by Gainsbourg! The music spans the space of his early Latin and jazzy work, through his slinky sexy 60s and 70s years, to his final burst of great music in the early 80s. Titles include "J'Ai Deja Donne" by Jacques Dutronc, "Les P'Tits Papiers" by Regine, "Les Papillons Noirs" by Michele Arnaud, "Mambo Miam Miam" by Los Goragueros, "Le Sixieme Sens" by Juliette Greco, "L'Oiseau De Paradis" by Zizi Jeanmarie, "Les Petits Boudins" by Dominique Walter, "Le Mal Interieur" by Isabelle Adjani, "Plus Dous Avec Moi" by Charlotte Gainsbourg, and "Le Drapeau Noir" by Mirelle Darc. CD3 features great music that Serge Gainsbourg did for a variety of cinematic projects – music that's every bit as groovy as his own vocal tunes, and which often appear here in instrumental takes that let you focus even more strongly on his great sense of a funky bit and a groove! Titles include "Milena (instrumental)", "L'Eau A La Bouche (avec intro)", "Requiem Pour Un Con (instrumental)", "First Class Ticket (prise alternative)", "Les Chemins De Katmandou (generique)", "Le Village A L'Aube", "Discophoteque (rough mix)", and "Le Physique Et La Figure (version complete)", plus Anna Karina singing "Roller Girl". A fantastic live set from Serge Gainsbourg – and a record that stands as a concert accompaniment to his famous albums Aux Armes Et Cetera and Mauvaises Nouvelles Des Etoiles – both done in a reggae mode with work from Sly & Robbie! The famous Jamaican duo are part of the group here – with Sly Dunbar on drums and Robbie Shakespeare on bass – working with Ansel Collins on Hammond on Fender Rhodes and Mao Chung on guitar – which makes for a great little combo that really gets the sound right! If you haven't heard Gainsbourg in this mode, you're in for a treat – as the slow-stepping Jamaican rhythms provide a really fresh foil for his spoken, slinky vocals – transformed especially here on the remakes of the older tracks. Titles include "Brigade Des Stups", "Les Locataires", "Elle Est Si", "Pas Long Feu", "Lola Rastaquouere", "Javanaise Remake", "Bonnie & Clyde", "Relaxe Baby Be Cool", "Marilou Reggae Dub", and "Des Laids Des Laids". A strange late soundtrack for this film that starred Serge, Catherine Deneuve, and Gerard Depardieu! The score features the main theme "La Fautive" – in both a vocal version by Serge, plus two instrumental readings that have a mellower tone. Other tracks include the duet with Deneuve on "Dieu Fumeur De Havanes", also done later as an instrumental – plus 2 vocal numbers, "Papa Nono" and "La P'Tite Agathe", written by Serge, but sung by Depardieu with the band Bijou! One of Serge Gainsbourg's biggest international albums – and kind of an 80s update of his earlier erotic sound! There's something of a clubby vibe to the record – and most of the album was recorded in the US, with a fair bit of synthesizer and guitar, in kind of a colder post-new wave groove. Titles include a few great later classics – his remake of "Harley David, Son Of A Bitch", which really broke Serge to a whole new generation of listeners – plus his classic duet with daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg on the great "Lemon Incest" – one of the best songs ever about the virtues of father/daughter love! Other titles include "Sorry Angel", "I'm The Boy", "Kiss Me Hardy", "No Comment", and "Hmm Hmm Hmm". CD

Serge GainsbourgTenue De Soiree ... LP
Apache (France), 1986. Near Mint- ... $13.99
An overlooked Serge Gainsbourg soundtrack from the 80s – surprisingly well-done, and at a level that both reflects Serge's earlier styles and a much deeper ear for film scoring! There's a main theme that's delivered with this beautifully echoey piano line – sometimes playful, sometimes somber – almost like a melody from a Francis Lai film score – and balanced with some more stylized 80s elements that reflect the instrumental sounds in Gainsbourg's own records of the time – almost a reworking of older 70s trash modes, but towards more comedic ends for the film. The piano passages are especially wonderful – and a real revelation, as they show an emotive quality we don't normally associate with Serge – and titles include "Travelo", "Traverse", "Traveste", "Trave", "Travaux", "Traviolta One", "Travelling", and "Travers". Serge Gainsbourg & Jean Claude VannierLes Chemins De Katmandou ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A lost chapter in the legendary legacy of music from the team of Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier – the pair who created Serge's fantastic Melody Nelson album, and also did the funky soundtracks for the films Cannabis, La Horse, and Sex Shop! This set is every bit as groovy as those classics, but has been lost for years – because the master tapes were reportedly lost, and have only just recently been discovered – which makes the whole thing a 21st Century treasure from these two 60s maestros! The music is great – funky at times, jazzy at others – with elements that include tablas and sitar, funky bass, fuzzy guitar, heavy drums, and sweet clavinet – all used with that mindblowing melange that Vannier could cook up in the studio – so that even some of the familiar elements come out sounding very fresh and new. The film was also issued under the names Road To Kathmandu and The Pleasure Pit – and titles include "Opium Den", "Overdose", "Flower Child", "The Pleasure Pit", "Cache Cache", "Fallen Rainbow", and the tune "Colin Maillard" – a great funky number that's done in both vocal and instrumental versions. Wagram (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... $7.99
A very cool little collection – one that not just offers up a huge amount of important early work by the legendary Serge Gainsbourg – but a set that also includes a fair bit of his contemporaries singing his songs! When Serge first sprang onto the scene in the late 50s, he brought a new sort of edge to Parisian pop – a sense of danger and power that was different than some of the bluer-tinged modes of some of his predecessors – and the special quality of Gainsbourg's songs also led to many others recording his music – some up-and-coming artists like himself, others older artists who were taken up by Serge's new sort of energy. The 4CD set features a whopping 80 tracks in all – 48 by Gainsbourg, plus more by Juliette Greco, Brigitte Bardot, Michele Arnaud, Jean Claude Pascal, Hugues Aufray, Gloria Lasso, Alain Goraguer, and others. Fontana (France), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible collaboration between Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot – one of Serge's first duet albums ever – and a gem all the way through! In the year before he cut "Je T'aime Moi Non Plus" with Jane Birkin, Serge recorded this great album with Brigitte Bardot in which he worked out many of the same ideas. The album is probably best known for the track "Bonnie & Clyde" – which has been sampled to great fame over the years – but there's loads of other great tracks on here, with a mix of styles that joins Serge's jazzy years with his softcore 70s work – very cool, very groovy, and years ahead of its time. Some tracks are duets, and some are sung individually by Serge or Brigitte, but they're all great, and titles include "Intoxicated Man", "L'eau A La Bouche", "Un Jour Comme Un Autre", "Comic Strip", and more! Arrangements by Alain Gourager, Michel Colombier, and Claude Bolling – and the cover's got a great shot of Serge & BB as Bonnie & Clyde! LP, Vinyl record album

Universal (France), Late 50s/1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The coolest collection we've ever seen to focus on the soundtrack work of the great Serge Gainsbourg – and the most complete as well! The package really digs deep – and seems to offer up tracks from just about every single film that Gainsbourg was involved with – from his own compositions, to partnerships with greats like Alain Goraguer, Michel Colombier, and the mighty Jean-Claude Vannier – all of whom come up with very groovy, often funky instrumentation that rivals Serge's own releases! In fact, we might well even say that we find the Gainsbourg soundtrack material to be even cooler – as the films often gave Serge a chance to experiment, and try out new ideas he wouldn't do on his own records. This LP package is a great distillation of the larger CD set, with a focus on the grooviest cuts – and includes selections from the films L'Eau A La Bouche, Manon 70, Anna, Si Jetais Un Espion, Le Pacha, Slogan, Une Vueve En Or, and Les Chemins De Katmandou. DOL (Russia), Mid 60s. New Copy 5CD ... Out Of Stock
Five full albums of hip French pop from the 60s – all packaged together, with a fair amount of bonus work too! First up are the first two albums by Francoise Hardy – filled with original tunes that have a really fresh presentation – not just in the lyrics, but in the overall presentation – which was a huge change from the overly emotive modes of the generation before. Hardy plays a fair bit of acoustic guitar along with her vocals – furthering the groovy feel of the set – and backings are by the orchestra of Roger Samyn, who adds in some slight rockish touches! Next is Johnny Hallyday chante Johnny Hallyday – a set that features all original material by the famous French rocker – really showing his growing strengths as a songwriter, which helped give him a uniquely French style! Next is Brigitte Bardot Sings – classic 60s work from Brigitte Bardot – the roots of French female pop, with a set of tracks that mix together bits of rock, pop, and lively jazz-based arrangements – all in a unique blend that's totally great, and every bit as wonderful as you might expect! We might go so far as to argue that Brigitte Bardot on record is almost sexier than on the screen – and thanks to backing from the likes of Claude Bolling, Francois Rauber, and Pedro Serrano – the grooves are as great as the lovely lady's vocals! Twiste Et Chante follows – groovy early work from Sylvie Vartan – some of the earliest sides we've ever heard from this fab French singer, and done at a time when she was clearly inspired by early rock from the US scene! A number of the tracks here are French remakes of American songs – like "Twist & Shout", "Comin Home Baby", "So Long Baby", and other groovy 60s numbers – mixed with French originals, and all given some sprightly orchestrations by Eddie Vartan, in a way that allows Hammond, guitar, and other electric bits to mix nicely with larger arrangements. Last up is Serge Gainsbourg Et Le Cinema – a set that shows early soundtrack contributions from the legendary French singer – really cool work that resonates strongly with the mix of jazz and Latin in his other early recordings! Fantastic sounds from Charlotte Gainsbourg – a singer we first fell in love with through her father, the famous Serge – but who we've really come to love tremendously over the years – both through her work on screen and in the studio! Charlotte's got this sense of presence that's unlike anyone else at all – on film she's a complete individual, and on record she's very much the same – even while also echoing everything that made both Serge and Jane Birkin so great back in the day! This set has Charlotte working with collaborator Sebastian on most tracks – often in a musical mode that has spare rhythms, bass, and keyboards in the background – almost befitting the slight 80s look of the cover, but never in any sort of easy retro mode at all. The approach is a personal reinvention of an earlier generation of French sounds – and titles include "Lying With You", "Kate", "Deadly Valentine", "Rest", "I'm A Lie", "Dans Vos Airs", and "Les Crocodiles" – as well as the song "Songbird In A Cage", which features guest work from Paul McCartney – and "Sylvia Says", which features lyrics by Sylvia Plath. Play Time (France), 1969. New Copy ... $32.99
One of the grooviest albums ever by this baroque French arranger! Michel Colombier has cut some pretty great stuff in his time – but this album's probably the greatest, and it swings with a bouncy late 60s French pop sound that recalls some of the hippest work of Serge Gainsbourg, Michel Legrand, and others. Serge co-wrote two of the songs on the set – and the style of the work has heavy bass and percussion mixed with bouncy orchestrations and hiply swinging vocals in French, sometimes solo, sometimes in a jaunty ensemble mode. The record is great – one you'll put right up at the top of your pile of grooviest groovy French pop from the 60s – and titles include "Lobellia", "Suite No 12", "Turlututu Capot Pointu", "Le Labyrinthe", "Rose", "The Big Team", and "Frere Convers". Features bonus material too – tracks from La Femme Ecarlate and Coplan Agent Secret FX 18. LP, Vinyl record album

Butler (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 19.98
One of the spookiest soundtracks ever crafted by one of our favorite film composers of all time! Francois DeRoubaix always had this amazing style to his music – unlike anyone else, especially in the way he could blend together spare acoustic elements and unusual sonic and electronic touches! There's a very intimate feel to the record – almost as if Francois is performing most of the sounds in the studio himself – balancing a guitar line with a keyboard fill, a bowed bass bit with drums, soaring strings with trumpet, and so on – occasionally hitting some funky touches that really keep things interesting – and which makes some of DeRoubaix best work on a par with the genius of Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier! Titles include "The Countess Kiss", "Phantom Organ & Piano", "Pursuit On The Dunes Of Ostend", "Accident & Cymbalum", "Love On The Rails", "Red Lips", "Ballad In Bruges", and "The Dunes Of Ostend Flagellation". Also features two bonus tracks not used in the film – "Dracula 68 Woodstock" and "The Bruges Band". A really different groove from El Michels Affair – but one that reminds us again that the group is really amazing at just about anything they ever try to do! The adult themes here are modes borrowed from older European styles – some of the slinky funk of Serge Gainsbourg and some of his contemporaries, mixed with maybe a touch of Euro erotic film scoring – but all given that strong undercurrent of funk that we can always expect from Leon Michels and the group – arranged and produced with a really superb quality throughout! The drums are nice and heavy, the basslines sexy and slinky, and there's some occasional wordless female vocals and larger arrangements that really expand the palette of El Michels. Killer Hammond from Polish player Piotr Figiel – a player with a really wonderful sort of groove! The album's got a vibe that's halfway between the Hammond antics of Alan Hawkshaw and the freer lines of American jazzmen like Jimmy Smith or Charles Earland – augmented by other cool production touches at points, which gives the record a very groovy late 60s sort of Euro feel! The vocal group Bemibek sing these cool wordless vocals on the tune "Bit Of Spring Bit Of Summer" – and guitarist Dariusz Kozakiewicz adds a nice degree of fuzz to a few other tunes too – tripping out nicely with Piotr's very fluid lines on the Hammond! There's a bit of strings on a few numbers, bringing in a nice cinematic feel – and titles include "Prelude In E Minor", based on the same Chopin changes as Serge Gainsbourg's "Jane B" – plus "Never On Tuesday", "Breakfast At Midnight", "Away I'll Go", "Absence", and "Piece Of Space". The rest of the work here really follows suit – romping, jerking, and grooving in that wonderful mix of mod rhythms that made France's 60s material so great – some of the best of the French pop scene at the time, with a sound that's really a cut above on all the numbers here! Backings are by the mighty Alain Gouraguer, who brings in a hip mix of jazz inflections, rocking rhythms, and some of the more sparkling soundtrack elements bubbling in the French 60s scene – all a perfect accompaniment for Gall's catchy girl pop vocals. Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $22.99 29.99
A great little package that finally brings together two different musical worlds of the great Alain Goraguer – the man who's maybe best known for providing the sounds for early recordings by Serge Gainsbourg – and an artist who also recorded some great jazz and soundtrack material on the French scene of the late 50s and early 60s! The set's overflowing with music we've never heard from Goraguer before – including a fair bit of instrumental readings of early Gainsbourg tunes – and although Alain had a few entries in the earlier Jazz In Paris CD series, this 3CD set moves way way past those outings, and offers up work in a range of styles – straight jazz, orchestral, cinematic, Latin, and even a few special projects as well. Much of the music has a very cool postwar Parisian vibe – and the CD features The albums Alain Goraguer Et Son Trio No 1, Go Go Goraguer, Slow Et Fox Du Jazz A La Une, Danse Party No 26, Los Goraguers Cha Cha Cha, plus some 45rpm EP releases – as well as albums recorded under the nom-du-recording of Laura Fontaine – plus soundtracks for the films La Piege, J'Irai Cracher Sur Vos Tombes, Les Loups Dans La Bergerie, L'Eau A La Bouche, Les Heriteiers, and Le Bel Age – plus other bits too. 83 tracks in all – plus notes in English and French, and images of the original records too. The book offers up Klein's work in a few different slices – some relatively straight early black and white photographs, which are exceptional – then some shots in Tokyo, and a lot more in Paris – which get increasingly wilder as the 60s move on, and which lead up to a section on his films – including the classic Qui Est Vous Polly Magoo, and Mister Freedom, which also featured Serge Gainsbourg! MomusPoison Boyfriend ... LP
Creation (UK), 1987. Very Good ... $14.99
The first album that Momus recorded for Creation Records – a label that provided him with a much stronger springboard than before – which was perfect for the way the singer blended very offbeat lyrics with compelling mainstream songcraft! Momus was always very different than most of the Brit 80s scene in which he worked – influenced strongly by the French work of singer/songwriters like George Brassens, Jacques Brel, and Serge Gainsbourg – but graced with a very British wit, which made for an especially biting style that worked well with the themes of his songs. Momus has a vocal style that's maybe somewhere in Donovan territory, but sharper – and he draws from a variety of European song modes, fitted to the situation of each individual songs – as you'll hear on classics like "Situation Comedy Blues", "Three Wars", "The Gatecrasher", "Flame Into Being", and the Serge Gainsbourg-like "Closer To You". Kudu/King (Japan), 1975. Used ... $13.99
A surprising jazz funk stunner from drummer Idris Muhammad – part of his great second chapter of work for CTI in the 70s! Idris is working here in a style that's very different than his heavy-footed funky work on Prestige and Blue Note – and while it's easy to criticize him for not keeping the same old breakbeat funk style, it's also important to give him a lot of credit for pushing his vision way past the simple stock style of the earlier days! The record's a very nice set of complicated jazzy grooves – some a bit clubby, but many very nice, and with the kind of sophisticated funk arrangements that were on the best Kudu records. No surprise that Dave Matthews is putting together most of the cuts, save for one excellent groove that's arranged by Tom Harrell. Players include Fred Wesley, Ronnie Cuber, Eric Gale, and Wilbur Bascomb – and titles include "Baia", "Sudan", "Hey Pocky A Way", "Theme For New York City", which is based on the same Chopin haunting tune as Serge Gainsbourg's "Jane B"! CBS (France), 1969. Sealed ... $19.99
The group name's got "opera" in the middle, but the set is way more than that – and way more than the usual "rock opera" modes in which the rare album is frequently cited! Instead, the whole thing's a freewheeling bit of French psych – very much tied to the trippier corners of the world that included music of Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Paul Vannier, but with some freakier elements around the edges! The arrangements and production are wonderful – very different than some of the looser hippie modes that would come on the French scene in the early 70s – with sonic energy that keeps things nicely intense throughout, even when things are going wild! The project is the brainchild of mad rockers Francois Wertheimer, Guy Skornik, William Sheller, and Dominic Perrier – and also features sitar from Serge Franklin, orchestrations from sound library maestro Paul Piot, and jams from the group Alice. The whole thing is fantastic – and the reissue features a great booklet of notes and information on this very unique record! LP, Vinyl record album

The previous Popshoppers album was a tribute to the "popshopping" sound of old German adverts from which they took their name – and this time the group turns it's attention to hedonistic 70s dancefloor sounds! A baroque instrumental masterpiece from Jean Claude Vannier – Serge Gainsbourg's right hand man at the start of the 70s, and a key figure in the legendary Histoire De Melody Nelson album! The feel here is very much along the lines of work that Serge was doing at the time – larger orchestrations mixed with smaller instrumentation – in a level that's often funky, always baroque, and very much in the best Sexopolis styles of the French pop scene of the time! There's a marked similarity here to some of the work of Michel Colombier – but unlike Colombier, and Gainsbourg, there's no vocals at all on these tracks – and the main genius is carried by Vannier's incredibly arranged strings, rolling rhythms, fuzzy guitars, and dark little soundtrack-styled groove! Some tracks are wonderfully funky, others are moody and tripped-out – and the whole thing's a masterpiece that we'd file right up there with our favorite French work of the time! Titles include "L'Enfanta La Mouche Et Les Allumettes", "Danse Des Mouches Noires Gardes Du Roi", "Mort Du Roi Des Mouches", "Le Papier Tue-Enfant", "Les Garde Volent Au Secours Du Roi", and "Petite Agonie De L'Enfant Assassin". Columbia, 2016. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
The cover's a bit chilling, given that the record was Leonard Cohen's last – and it almost makes us feel as if he's looking back on all of us, from the brightness of the great beyond! But even without that image, the album's got a vibe that really lives up to its title – impossible to consider in these days after Cohen's passing – which feels almost inevitable in the pacing and mood of the music, and the liner notes' explanation that he was in such pain during the recording of the set, that his son Adam had to work as the guiding force to bring all the music together. Cohen's often talking more than singing, but shifts easily between both modes – in a raspy voice that almost makes him feel as if he's taking a late-life turn towards a Serge Gainsbourg mode of presentation – even though his lyrical content is very much his own. The poetry of the man is still extremely powerful – and still a masterpiece in economy that so many other songwriters should heed – on titles that include "It Seemed The Better Day", "Steer Your Way", "Traveling Light", "If I Didn't Have Your Love", "You Want It Darker", "Treaty", and "Leaving The Table". Some of the coolest soundtrack music you'll ever hope to hear – all played by a cat who could equally handle the sitar, guitar, Fender Rhodes, and electronics pictured on the cover! Francois De Roubaix is easily one of our favorite soundtrack composers ever – a French talent at the end of the 60s who never got the same international exposure as some of his countrymen, but who had an ear for odd instrumentation and funky undercurrents that rivals that of Serge Gainsbourg, Michel Colombier, or Jean-Claude Vannier – although we might even be tempted to say that Francois is even more way-out than any of them! Amazing grooves from a completely unlike source – Wales! With a strange language and a windswept location, one would hardly imagine the Welsh groove of the 70s to be anything of note – but it turns out that the records coming out on the Sain label were even more mindblowing than some of the best baroque French and Italian bits of the time! There's an approach here that's partly acid folk, partly jazzy groove – but also in a really unique territory that carves out its own space in sound – similar to the way that Serge Gainsbourg and others of his generation openly reached out to other styles of the time, and forged them into a surprisingly funky batch of tunes. And given that the Welsh language is highly consonant-based, and extremely rhythmic, even when there's not funky backings on some of these tunes, there's still an undeniable sense of groove that really amazing. Even the production is out of this world too – with strange twists and turns that out-do the best underground talents working at the time – and which create a real sense of timelessness to these tunes that's also only matched by our joy in discovering them! Beautiful work from Benjamin Biolay – easily one of our favorite French artists of the 21st Century – even though we've been following his work since the previous one! Benjamin's got a sound that's just perfect if you, like us, dig an older generation of French work by artists like Serge Gainsbourg, Jacques Dutronc, Michel Polnareff, and others from that magical late 60s moment when French pop really found its own sound. Biolay's got a way of sliding in the sinister next to the groovy – often with vocals that are spoken as much as sung – and produced to perfection by his own strong ear for unusual combinations of sounds. Benjamin helped launch the career of many other great French acts in the past decade or two – but we still love his own work the best – and an album like this definitely lives up to that faith.
