Serge GainsbourgA La Maison De La Radio EP (180 gram pressing) ... LP
INA (France), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $22.99
Unreleased material from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg – recorded for French radio in the 60s, and with a different style than some of his more familiar studio work! Gone are the large, full arrangements – and in their place is an intimate approach that has Serge on piano alongside his vocals – delivering his original tunes in a way that's very personal, and maybe even edgier than usual, and completely charming overall! A few cuts add in bass and guitar – and the set features versions of "Les Goemons", "La Javanaise", "Le Rock De Nerval", "Le Talkie Walkie", "Intoxicated Man", "Ces Petits Riens", and "Elaeudanla Teiteia". Universal (France), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A treasure trove of rare work from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg – studio outtakes, alternate versions, and lots of other material that stands as a great addition to the catalog of one of the coolest, grooviest French language singers ever! This 3CD set is overflowing with gems – and CD1 brings together rare tracks by Serge himself – some from 45 or LP projects, but presented here in different modes that stand as a wonderful complement to some of the versions you might know – almost like a "part 2" or extended take in some cases. Titles include "Black Trombone (avec intro)", "L'Homme A Tete De Chou (instrumental)", "Sea Sex & Sun (extrait des prises voix", "Chez Les Yeye (prise complete)", "L'Eau A La Bouche (avec intro)", "69 Annee Erotique (instrumental)", and two very long tracks – "Melody (prise complete)" and "Lola Roastaquoouere (instrumental)". CD2 features various interpretations of Serge's songs – many of which were produced by Serge himself, and a few of which even feature vocals by Gainsbourg! The music spans the space of his early Latin and jazzy work, through his slinky sexy 60s and 70s years, to his final burst of great music in the early 80s. Titles include "J'Ai Deja Donne" by Jacques Dutronc, "Les P'Tits Papiers" by Regine, "Les Papillons Noirs" by Michele Arnaud, "Mambo Miam Miam" by Los Goragueros, "Le Sixieme Sens" by Juliette Greco, "L'Oiseau De Paradis" by Zizi Jeanmarie, "Les Petits Boudins" by Dominique Walter, "Le Mal Interieur" by Isabelle Adjani, "Plus Dous Avec Moi" by Charlotte Gainsbourg, and "Le Drapeau Noir" by Mirelle Darc. CD3 features great music that Serge Gainsbourg did for a variety of cinematic projects – music that's every bit as groovy as his own vocal tunes, and which often appear here in instrumental takes that let you focus even more strongly on his great sense of a funky bit and a groove! Titles include "Milena (instrumental)", "L'Eau A La Bouche (avec intro)", "Requiem Pour Un Con (instrumental)", "First Class Ticket (prise alternative)", "Les Chemins De Katmandou (generique)", "Le Village A L'Aube", "Discophoteque (rough mix)", and "Le Physique Et La Figure (version complete)", plus Anna Karina singing "Roller Girl". One of the grooviest collections of work by Serge Gainsbourg we've ever seen – a 23 track set that features most of his coolest numbers! In case you don't know Serge, he's one of the most incredible singers ever – a sexy Frenchman with a good talent for a groove, with a sound that was light-years ahead of most of his contemporaries, and which is continually being re-discovered today. This package goes way past other simple "best of" collections of Serge's work – to compile those tunes that are especially appealing to an era in which his classics have been sampled, re-recorded, and used as inspiration for countless young bands. As such, the tracks, although old, sound incredibly fresh – with a stunning array of gems from the 60s and 70s that include "Chez Les Ye Ye", "Bonnie & Clyde", "Ford Mustang", "Initials BB", "Requiem Pour Un C", "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus", "L'Anamour", "69 Annee Erotique", "La Decadanse", "Ballad De Melody Nelson", "Sous Le Soleil Exactement", "Marilou Sous La Neige", "Sea Sex & Sun", "Aux Armes Et Cetera", "Dieu Fumeur De Havanes", "Je Suis Venu Te Dire Que Je M'En Vais", "L'Homme A Tete De Chou", and "Qui Est In Qui Est Out". The score features the main theme "La Fautive" – in both a vocal version by Serge, plus two instrumental readings that have a mellower tone. Other tracks include the duet with Deneuve on "Dieu Fumeur De Havanes", also done later as an instrumental – plus 2 vocal numbers, "Papa Nono" and "La P'Tite Agathe", written by Serge, but sung by Depardieu with the band Bijou! Philips (France), 1975. Very Good+ ... $19.99
Brother Serge shocked the world when he released this album of Nazi Rock in the mid 70s – but as might be expected, the whole thing's an ironic take on fascism – and not really the overt celebration you might think! That aspect of the record becomes a bit clearer when you consider Gainsbourg's (nee Ginsburg) Jewish background – and in a way, the campy presentation of the material here almost makes the Nazis come off like the portrayal of Hitler in The Producers! Backings are by a small combo that includes the great Alan Hawkshaw on keyboards and Alan Parker on guitar – and titles include "S.S. In Uruguay", "Yellow Star", "Rock Around The Bunker", "Nazi Rock", and a great version of "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album

Serge GainsbourgTenue De Soiree ... LP
Apache (France), 1986. Near Mint- ... $19.99
An overlooked Serge Gainsbourg soundtrack from the 80s – surprisingly well-done, and at a level that both reflects Serge's earlier styles and a much deeper ear for film scoring! There's a main theme that's delivered with this beautifully echoey piano line – sometimes playful, sometimes somber – almost like a melody from a Francis Lai film score – and balanced with some more stylized 80s elements that reflect the instrumental sounds in Gainsbourg's own records of the time – almost a reworking of older 70s trash modes, but towards more comedic ends for the film. The piano passages are especially wonderful – and a real revelation, as they show an emotive quality we don't normally associate with Serge – and titles include "Travelo", "Traverse", "Traveste", "Trave", "Travaux", "Traviolta One", "Travelling", and "Travers". ✨✧ Serge Gainsbourg & Brigitte BardotBonnie & Clyde (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Fontana (France), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
An incredible collaboration between Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot – one of Serge's first duet albums ever – and a gem all the way through! In the year before he cut "Je T'aime Moi Non Plus" with Jane Birkin, Serge recorded this great album with Brigitte Bardot in which he worked out many of the same ideas. The album is probably best known for the track "Bonnie & Clyde" – which has been sampled to great fame over the years – but there's loads of other great tracks on here, with a mix of styles that joins Serge's jazzy years with his softcore 70s work – very cool, very groovy, and years ahead of its time. Some tracks are duets, and some are sung individually by Serge or Brigitte, but they're all great, and titles include "Intoxicated Man", "L'eau A La Bouche", "Un Jour Comme Un Autre", "Comic Strip", and more! Arrangements by Alain Gourager, Michel Colombier, and Claude Bolling – and the cover's got a great shot of Serge & BB as Bonnie & Clyde! LP, Vinyl record album

Fontana, 1969. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A landmark collaboration between Serge Gainsbourg and actress Jane Birkin – his paramour at the time, and a much younger woman! This album is perhaps the archetypal Gainsbourg erotic effort – and it's filled with wonderful duets set to breathy, bouncy orchestrations – tunes that forged a whole new "adult" level in pop music – not just in France, but around the globe! The arrangements are amazing, and feature some of the weirdest instrumentation ever heard on a pop record – especially one that was as successful as this – and titles include the classic "69 Annee Erotique", plus"Jane B", "Elisa", "Orang Outan", "Les Sucettes", and "Manon". Philips (Japan), 1967. Used ... $26.99
A late 60s soundtrack by Serge Gainsbourg – but a record that's easily as great as any of his studio albums from the same time! The bulk of the album has a spare, punctuated groove that's somewhat funky – quite a bit like Melody Nelson in its sense of space and timing – and its sex-heavy groove that bubbles up nicely from the bottom of bassy backings and mod orchestrations. Serge sings a bit – as does Anna Karina and Jean-Claude Brialy, Gainsbourg's co-stars in the film – and the orchestrations on the record were handled by Michel Colombier, and easily rank as some of his greatest work ever! Titles include both vocal and instrumental versions of "Sous Le Soleil Exactement", "Pas Mal Pas Mal Du Tout", "Boomerang", "Un Jour Comme Un Autre", "Ne Dis Rien", "Roller Girl", "GI Jo", "Pistolet Jo", "Photographes Et Religieuses", "Rien Rien J'Disais Ca Comme Ca", and "Un Poison Violet C'Est CA L'Amour". DOL (Russia), Mid 60s. New Copy 5CD ... $7.99
Five full albums of hip French pop from the 60s – all packaged together, with a fair amount of bonus work too! First up are the first two albums by Francoise Hardy – filled with original tunes that have a really fresh presentation – not just in the lyrics, but in the overall presentation – which was a huge change from the overly emotive modes of the generation before. Hardy plays a fair bit of acoustic guitar along with her vocals – furthering the groovy feel of the set – and backings are by the orchestra of Roger Samyn, who adds in some slight rockish touches! Next is Johnny Hallyday chante Johnny Hallyday – a set that features all original material by the famous French rocker – really showing his growing strengths as a songwriter, which helped give him a uniquely French style! Next is Brigitte Bardot Sings – classic 60s work from Brigitte Bardot – the roots of French female pop, with a set of tracks that mix together bits of rock, pop, and lively jazz-based arrangements – all in a unique blend that's totally great, and every bit as wonderful as you might expect! We might go so far as to argue that Brigitte Bardot on record is almost sexier than on the screen – and thanks to backing from the likes of Claude Bolling, Francois Rauber, and Pedro Serrano – the grooves are as great as the lovely lady's vocals! Twiste Et Chante follows – groovy early work from Sylvie Vartan – some of the earliest sides we've ever heard from this fab French singer, and done at a time when she was clearly inspired by early rock from the US scene! A number of the tracks here are French remakes of American songs – like "Twist & Shout", "Comin Home Baby", "So Long Baby", and other groovy 60s numbers – mixed with French originals, and all given some sprightly orchestrations by Eddie Vartan, in a way that allows Hammond, guitar, and other electric bits to mix nicely with larger arrangements. Last up is Serge Gainsbourg Et Le Cinema – a set that shows early soundtrack contributions from the legendary French singer – really cool work that resonates strongly with the mix of jazz and Latin in his other early recordings! Serge Gainsbourg's previous unissued mid recording of "Comme Un Boomerang" – a pretty famous composition for Serge, but his own version has languished in the vaults since 1975! Vocally, it's a husky, sexy groover, as you'd expect – with kind of a raw, moody rock & roll backdrop of drums, guitar and an appropriately sinister bass line snaking through. Serge Gainsbourg's last studio album – but a record that's still very much in the bad boy mode of earlier years! The sound is quite 80s-oriented – with more electric rhythms and a fair bit of keyboards – but Serge makes the best of the sound by delivering the lyrics in his older style of singing – slightly spoken, always honest, in that raspy tone that makes just about all his records pretty compelling! And in a way, the lyrics here are a lot more direct – taking advantage of an opening up of ideals in the post-punk years, and hitting topics with even more force than before. A very cool little collection – one that not just offers up a huge amount of important early work by the legendary Serge Gainsbourg – but a set that also includes a fair bit of his contemporaries singing his songs! When Serge first sprang onto the scene in the late 50s, he brought a new sort of edge to Parisian pop – a sense of danger and power that was different than some of the bluer-tinged modes of some of his predecessors – and the special quality of Gainsbourg's songs also led to many others recording his music – some up-and-coming artists like himself, others older artists who were taken up by Serge's new sort of energy. The 4CD set features a whopping 80 tracks in all – 48 by Gainsbourg, plus more by Juliette Greco, Brigitte Bardot, Michele Arnaud, Jean Claude Pascal, Hugues Aufray, Gloria Lasso, Alain Goraguer, and others. The coolest collection we've ever seen to focus on the soundtrack work of the great Serge Gainsbourg – and the most complete as well! The package really digs deep – and seems to offer up tracks from just about every single film that Gainsbourg was involved with – from his own compositions, to partnerships with greats like Alain Goraguer, Michel Colombier, and the mighty Jean-Claude Vannier – all of whom come up with very groovy, often funky instrumentation that rivals Serge's own releases! In fact, we might well even say that we find the Gainsbourg soundtrack material to be even cooler – as the films often gave Serge a chance to experiment, and try out new ideas he wouldn't do on his own records. This LP package is a great distillation of the larger CD set, with a focus on the grooviest cuts – and includes selections from the films L'Eau A La Bouche, Manon 70, Anna, Si Jetais Un Espion, Le Pacha, Slogan, Une Vueve En Or, and Les Chemins De Katmandou. ✨✧ Serge Gainsbourg & Jane BirkinJane Birkin – Serge Gainsbourg (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Fontana/Light In The Attic, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A landmark collaboration between Serge Gainsbourg and actress Jane Birkin – his paramour at the time, and a much younger woman! The pair come together beautifully here in a set of sensuous duets – tunes that have an open, honest approach to the relations between the sexes – yet never in any sort of cliched late 60s hippie-esque ways. This album is perhaps the archetypal Gainsbourg erotic effort – and it's filled with wonderful duets set to breathy, bouncy orchestrations – tunes that forged a whole new "adult" level in pop music – not just in France, but around the globe! The arrangements are amazing, and feature some of the weirdest instrumentation ever heard on a pop record – especially one that was as successful as this. Backings are by Athur Greenslade – and titles include the classic "69 Annee Erotique" and "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus", plus "Jane B", "Elisa", "Orang Outan", "Les Sucettes", and "Manon". ✨✧ Serge GainsbourgJe T'Aime Moi Non Plus – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Philips (France), 1976. Near Mint- (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A sexy soundtrack to a mid-70s film written and directed by Serge Gainsbourg – and starring Jane Birkin and a young Gerard Depardieu! The feel here is very much in the spirit of Serge's work of the time – especially that recorded with Birkin – but in a way, it's almost even better, because the soundtrack setting has most of the tunes stripped down to their barest elements – with a simplicity not heard in Gainsbourg's music since Melody Nelson! Instrumentation includes some great "watery" piano bits that kind of float over the main rhythmic theme – but other tracks get a bit more rockish, with heavy bunker rock-styled guitar, and a few more use a bit of banjo – but in a weirdly syncopated way. The score features a few great variations on the classic "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus" – and the "Ballade De Johnny-Jane" is a great instrumental that stands as one of Serge's most compelling themes from the 70s! Other tracks include "Banjo Au Bord Du Styx", "Joe Banjo", "Le Camion Jaune", and "L'Abominale Strip-Tease". LP, Vinyl record album

Finders Keepers (UK), 1969. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A lost chapter in the legendary legacy of music from the team of Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier – the pair who created Serge's fantastic Melody Nelson album, and also did the funky soundtracks for the films Cannabis, La Horse, and Sex Shop! This set is every bit as groovy as those classics, but has been lost for years – because the master tapes were reportedly lost, and have only just recently been discovered – which makes the whole thing a 21st Century treasure from these two 60s maestros! The music is great – funky at times, jazzy at others – with elements that include tablas and sitar, funky bass, fuzzy guitar, heavy drums, and sweet clavinet – all used with that mindblowing melange that Vannier could cook up in the studio – so that even some of the familiar elements come out sounding very fresh and new. The film was also issued under the names Road To Kathmandu and The Pleasure Pit – and titles include "Opium Den", "Overdose", "Flower Child", "The Pleasure Pit", "Cache Cache", "Fallen Rainbow", and the tune "Colin Maillard" – a great funky number that's done in both vocal and instrumental versions. A new generation of the Gainsbourg family line comes into the musical fold – with results that are surprisingly nice! Lulu Gainsbourg enlists a host of famous guests on the outing – including Rufus Wainwright, Marianne Faithfull, Shane McGowan, Iggy Pop, Ayo, and others – and highlights include Scarlett Johansson joining Lulu on a remake of "Bonnie & Clyde", and Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis singing together on "Ballade De Melody Nelson"! The groovy French pop of Serge Gainsbourg gets the remix treatment! After years of being sampled by hip hoppers, referenced by post-rockers, and claimed as an influence by a wide range of singers and instrumentalists – Serge Gainsbourg's finally breaking into the mainstream of modern music with this tasty batch of remixes from some of Europe's best producers. Of course, ol' Serge is probably rolling over in his grave at the thought of the project – but from our end of things, the whole thing sounds pretty groovy! Because/Warner, 2010. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunner from Charlotte Gainsbourg – in keeping with her style of crafting a diverse body of avant pop sounds by working with stellar collaborators – this time with producer/composer Beck, and it's her best to date! A few tunes are sung in French and have a kind of dramatic French pop noir vibe that would made Serge proud, a mix of sweet and sultry, lightness and drama. Others have more of a raw and messed up vibe with heavier percussion and more of a leftfield sound, and still others have kind of a freaky folk funk sound with horns, drums and more. She covers a lot of stylistic terrain with equally successful wins all around. It's the mark of a true talent that Charlotte can invite such hugely impacting collaborators onto her albums – Beck and his stable of amazing studio musicians on this album, and previous collaborators from Jarvis Cocker to Air – yet it's her show all the way. Titles include "Master's Hands", "IRM", "Le Chat Du Cafe Des Artistes", "In The End", "Heaven Can Wait", "Vanities", "Time Of The Assassins", "Trick Pony", "Greenwich Mean Time", "La Collectionneuse" and more. Warner, 2017. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful setting for the great Jane Birkin – working here with a full symphony orchestra, in very fresh interpretations of the classic songs of her onetime partner, Serge Gainsbourg! The orchestrations are wonderful – never sleepy, and always nicely light – so that Jane's voice is very upfront in the mix, but has a vibe that's quite different than most of her other later work – almost more fragile, in a way – and certainly with more world experience in her tone than when she sang some of these songs in her youth. The project is a surprising treat, and has us loving Birkin all over again – as well as being really amazed that some of Serge's songs could sound so different. Titles include "Baby Alone In Babylon", "Jane B", "L'Anamour", "La Javanaise", "Amour Des Feintes", "Valse De Melody", "Ces Petits Riens", "La Chanson De Prevert", and "Requiem Pour Un Con". Brigitte Bardot's best known on these shores as an actress, but during the 60s she cut some really fantastic work on the scene in Paris – including a fair bit of groovers that were done with help from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg! Bardot provided a fantastic new voice in the world of pop music – a singer who was unabashedly open about her desires, and very different than the more melancholy stars of a few years before – a quality that's further emphasized by the wonderfully groovy instrumentation used on most of these tracks! Production and arrangements are superb – and put this music in the best territory of the grooviest 60s French pop by artists like Serge Gainsbourg, France Gall, Jacques Dutronc, and a rare few others. This is the first-ever English-annotated collection of work from the period – and features a whopping 25 tracks from her recordings for Philips and Disc AZ – titles that include "Harley Davidson", "Contact", "Neu Au Soleil", "Je Danse Donc Je Suis", "La Madrague", "Les Hommes Endormis", "Je Voudrais Perdre La Memoire", "Mr Sun", "Le Diable Est Anglais", "Tu Es Venu Mon Amour", "John Et Michel", "Gang Gang", and duets with Serge Gainsbourg on "Bonnie & Clyde" and "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus". Naive (France), 2013. Used Gatefold ... $5.99
Beautiful work from Benjamin Biolay – easily one of our favorite French artists of the 21st Century – even though we've been following his work since the previous one! Benjamin's got a sound that's just perfect if you, like us, dig an older generation of French work by artists like Serge Gainsbourg, Jacques Dutronc, Michel Polnareff, and others from that magical late 60s moment when French pop really found its own sound. Biolay's got a way of sliding in the sinister next to the groovy – often with vocals that are spoken as much as sung – and produced to perfection by his own strong ear for unusual combinations of sounds. Benjamin helped launch the career of many other great French acts in the past decade or two – but we still love his own work the best – and an album like this definitely lives up to that faith. Serge co-wrote two of the songs on the set – and the style of the work has heavy bass and percussion mixed with bouncy orchestrations and hiply swinging vocals in French, sometimes solo, sometimes in a jaunty ensemble mode. Some of the coolest soundtrack music you'll ever hope to hear – all played by a cat who could equally handle the sitar, guitar, Fender Rhodes, and electronics pictured on the cover! Francois De Roubaix is easily one of our favorite soundtrack composers ever – a French talent at the end of the 60s who never got the same international exposure as some of his countrymen, but who had an ear for odd instrumentation and funky undercurrents that rivals that of Serge Gainsbourg, Michel Colombier, or Jean-Claude Vannier – although we might even be tempted to say that Francois is even more way-out than any of them! A really different groove from El Michels Affair – but one that reminds us again that the group is really amazing at just about anything they ever try to do! The adult themes here are modes borrowed from older European styles – some of the slinky funk of Serge Gainsbourg and some of his contemporaries, mixed with maybe a touch of Euro erotic film scoring – but all given that strong undercurrent of funk that we can always expect from Leon Michels and the group – arranged and produced with a really superb quality throughout! The drums are nice and heavy, the basslines sexy and slinky, and there's some occasional wordless female vocals and larger arrangements that really expand the palette of El Michels. All the music is composed by Nico Fidenco, and it's got a sound that's different from a lot of these other Italian soundtracks, and which sounds a bit like some of the French stuff of the 70's, particularly the scoring that was being done by Serge Gainsbourg at the time. The third amazing album from Liminanas – and a record that already has the group moving way farther forward than before! If their debut material had the quality of mid 60s French fuzzy pop, this set shows a deeper, darker Serge Gainsbourg-like sophistication – one that has the duo still holding onto some of the best mod and psych albums of before, but finding a new sense of rhythm, spacing, and overall presentation that's completely sublime! But make no mistake, the record's hardly a Serge copy effort – like other recent work of this type – and instead shows a really personal, powerful contribution to an all-too-small legacy of truly sublime work of this nature. Noirish French rock from The Liminanas – the second great record in a row from multi-instrumentalist Lionel and sultry singer/drummer Marie! Crystal Anis is their first album for Hozac – and one that equals, if not tops their underground instant classic debut for Trouble In Mind. Honestly, no other neo-classic garage psych revivalists anywhere in the world hits our sweet spot like The Liminanas. They carry a darkness-tinged, fuzzy guitar vibe inspired by early Velvets, the sometimes spoken, sometimes sung sexiness of Serge Gainsbourg and his chanteuses on the vocal tip, and an overall narcotic vibe that sinks in and doesn't let up. Yes, the influences are familiar, but what they do with them is uniquely hypnotic and wholly distinctive. The songs jump back and forth from French to English, but it's really all about the mood here. We can't recommend 'em highly enough! The group name's got "opera" in the middle, but the set is way more than that – and way more than the usual "rock opera" modes in which the rare album is frequently cited! Instead, the whole thing's a freewheeling bit of French psych – very much tied to the trippier corners of the world that included music of Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Paul Vannier, but with some freakier elements around the edges! The arrangements and production are wonderful – very different than some of the looser hippie modes that would come on the French scene in the early 70s – with sonic energy that keeps things nicely intense throughout, even when things are going wild! The project is the brainchild of mad rockers Francois Wertheimer, Guy Skornik, William Sheller, and Dominic Perrier – and also features sitar from Serge Franklin, orchestrations from sound library maestro Paul Piot, and jams from the group Alice. A sweet sexy score from the great Yan Tregger – who you'll also know for his disco and sound library material on the late 70s Italian scene! This music is a bit earlier than some of Yan's sounds that we know from that part of the decade, but all the best roots of his groove are firmly in place – including an early love of fast funk tunes mixed with strings, creating a nascent disco vibe at times – which then gives way to slower, slinkier tunes that mix great basslines with the orchestrations – very much in the best Serge Gainsbourg/Jean Claude Vannier mode! A few tunes get a bit more playfully melodic, but these are more than offset by some of the tighter, funkier numbers on the set – titles that include "Tirage Coquin", "Theme D'Amour", "L'Amour A La Bouche", "Preliminaires Gastronomiques", "Frankenstein Delivere", "Decadance", and "Fin De Partie". Decca/Wah Wah (Spain), Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Groovy Brit girl pop from Twinkle – a singer who only shone briefly for a stretch in the 60s, but who made some really great music in the process! Twinkle's got a style that's maybe a bit more dreamy than some of her UK contemporaries – less the brash, proud pop of Cilla Black or Petula Clark than the blue-tinged styles of some of the American girl singers of the time – especially some of those who were best at weepy ballads and songs of loss. Yet Twinkle's also much more of an enigma – as she wrote most of the material herself, and sort of sprung on the scene out of nowhere – with enough personal presence that she's not just another girl singer run through a few changes in the studio. Titles include her big hits "Golden Lights" and "Terry" – plus "Ain't Nobody Home But Me", "Tommy", "The End Of The World", "What Am I Doing Here With You", and Serge Gainsbourg tune "A Lonely Singing Doll". Jean Claude VannierL'Enfant Assassin Des Mouches ... CD
B- Music/Finders Keepers, 1972. Used ... $6.99
A baroque instrumental masterpiece from Jean Claude Vannier – Serge Gainsbourg's right hand man at the start of the 70s, and a key figure in the legendary Histoire De Melody Nelson album! The feel here is very much along the lines of work that Serge was doing at the time – larger orchestrations mixed with smaller instrumentation – in a level that's often funky, always baroque, and very much in the best Sexopolis styles of the French pop scene of the time! There's a marked similarity here to some of the work of Michel Colombier – but unlike Colombier, and Gainsbourg, there's no vocals at all on these tracks – and the main genius is carried by Vannier's incredibly arranged strings, rolling rhythms, fuzzy guitars, and dark little soundtrack-styled groove! Some tracks are wonderfully funky, others are moody and tripped-out – and the whole thing's a masterpiece that we'd file right up there with our favorite French work of the time! Titles include "L'Enfanta La Mouche Et Les Allumettes", "Danse Des Mouches Noires Gardes Du Roi", "Mort Du Roi Des Mouches", "Le Papier Tue-Enfant", "Les Garde Volent Au Secours Du Roi", and "Petite Agonie De L'Enfant Assassin". CD features 2 bonus tracks – both versions of "Je M'Appelle Geraldine"! CD

Delabel (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $9.99
Grooviness abounds! This set's a wonderful batch of obscure French pop tunes – the kind of upbeat, hard-swinging 60s numbers that are a far cry from the moodier, more sentimental modes of the years before – with complicated elements laid alongside some straightforward grooves – all with production and execution that's completely sublime! If you dig the music of Serge Gainsbourg, and have always wanted to go further, this set's a great place to start – as it's got an excellent blend of slightly funky styles that feature lots of work on fuzzed-out guitars, organ, and heavy bass – the sorts of ultra-hip sounds you might always dig for on French records, yet never find together in one place as great as this! Titles include "Cuisses Nues, Bottes De Cuir" by Philippe Nicaud, "Bernadette" by L'Oeil, "A Degager" by Les Fleurs De Pavot, "Rouge Rouge" by Christie Laume, "Les Filles C'Est Fait" by Charlotte Leslie, "Le Pape Du Pop" by Stephane Varegues, "Avec Les Oreilles" by Monique Thubert, and "Sexologie" by Danyel Gerard. ✨✧ Jane BirkinDi Doo Dah (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Fontana/Light In The Attic, 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet sweet work from Jane Birkin – an early solo set that steps strongly off of her classic duets with Serge Gainsbourg! In a way, this album's as much a record by Serge as it is by Jane – since Serge wrote almost all the tracks, and since the arrangements are handled by the legendary Jean-Claude Vannier – who worked famously with Gainsbourg on Melody Nelson and other funky recordings! The set's got a slow, sexy, funky vibe – very similar to the Gainsbourg/Vannier collaborations – and maybe even sexier, given the way that Jane Birkin handles her breathy vocals. There's some sweet guitar bits that go great with Jane's delivery of the material – and the whole thing's an essential part of the Gainsbourg/Birkin canon. Tracks include "Help Camionneur!", "Banana Boat", "Kawasaki", "Leur Plaisir Sans Moi", and "Les Capotes Anglaises". CD features 2 bonus tracks – "La Decadanse" and "Les Langues De Chat". CD

Fontana/Mercury (France), 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Very groovy solo work by the lovely Jane B – working here with a set of songs by Serge Gainsbourg, and sublime arrangements by Brit Easy/KPM maestro Alan Hawkshaw. The record's got a super-sexy sound, with a lot of whispered Frenchy tracks in a style that's similar to Serge's best work – especially on the duets that him and Jane recorded in earlier years. The songs are very cool, too, and have a dreamy spacey quality to them, with cool lyrics, as you might guess from titles like "Nicotine", "Classee X", "Apolcalypstick", and the groovy "Ex Fan Des Sixties", which is filled with dreamy references to big rock stars! Chateau Flight pay tribute to some of their favorite music – and remix their way through a stack of wax, both classic and recent! The album, not surprisingly, is actually the group's best – and has a timeless quality that's kind of missing in most of their other records. Older French pop, European jazz, and avant classic tunes come into play with some of the best newer bits from the Paris scene – and titles include Chateau Flight remixes of "Beng Beng Beng" by Femi Kuti, "Lola Rastaquouere" by Serge Gainsbourg, "Brand New Day" by Pavel Kostiuk, "Take A Rest" by Psyco On Da Bus, "Too Fortiche" by Pierre Henry, "Soul Fiesta" by Manu Dibango, "J'Ai Dormi Sous L'Eau" by Air, "Who Am I" by Peace Orchestra, "Ritual" by Brandy, "August Day Song" by Bebel Gilberto, and "Second Nature" by Seji. ✨✧ Alain GoraguerLe Monde Instrumental D'Alain Goraguer (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little package that finally brings together two different musical worlds of the great Alain Goraguer – the man who's maybe best known for providing the sounds for early recordings by Serge Gainsbourg – and an artist who also recorded some great jazz and soundtrack material on the French scene of the late 50s and early 60s! The set's overflowing with music we've never heard from Goraguer before – including a fair bit of instrumental readings of early Gainsbourg tunes – and although Alain had a few entries in the earlier Jazz In Paris CD series, this 3CD set moves way way past those outings, and offers up work in a range of styles – straight jazz, orchestral, cinematic, Latin, and even a few special projects as well. Much of the music has a very cool postwar Parisian vibe – and the CD features The albums Alain Goraguer Et Son Trio No 1, Go Go Goraguer, Slow Et Fox Du Jazz A La Une, Danse Party No 26, Los Goraguers Cha Cha Cha, plus some 45rpm EP releases – as well as albums recorded under the nom-du-recording of Laura Fontaine – plus soundtracks for the films La Piege, J'Irai Cracher Sur Vos Tombes, Les Loups Dans La Bergerie, L'Eau A La Bouche, Les Heriteiers, and Le Bel Age – plus other bits too. 83 tracks in all – plus notes in English and French, and images of the original records too. Anthologys (France), 1960s. Used 4CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of female French pop from the 60s – packaged in a special case with a bonus male disc too! The 4CD package is a tremendous introduction to the hippest French pop sounds of the 60s – and goes way past the obvious stars of the time to include some cool girl singers who never got full exposure here on this side of the Atlantic. Some of the tracks on the set are versions of English-language hits, and others are original French numbers with a really hip, mod, go-go approach – very romping and groovy, with the sort of styles that are becoming the best-remembered from the time. The overall sound here is similar to some of France Gall's best work from the mid 60s – touched with traces of some of the Brit girl singers, but handled with some great instrumental touches that really make the tunes come alive. 4CD package features all 3 volumes of the Femmes De Paris series in thin LP-style sleeves, plus a bonus disc of the Gentlemen De Paris set – making for 73 tracks in all, including "7 Heures Du Matin" by Jacqueline Taieb, "Partie De Dames" by Liz Brady, "Je Suis Sublime" by Elizabeth, "Fille Ou Garcon" by Stone, "J'Ai Peur Parfois" by Adele, "L'Adorable Femme Des Neiges, "Idelisation" by Cosette, "Dracula" by Christine Pilzer, "La Fille De Paille" by Brigitte Bardot, "Baby Love" by Annie Philippe, "Nitty Gritty" by Jocelyne, "Et Moi Et Toi Et Soi" and "Madame La Terre" by Cleo, "Pourquoi Pas Moi" by Stella, "Agathe Ou Christie" and "Des Tigres Et Des Minets" by Christine Delaroche, "La Premiere A Gauche" and "La Fac De Lettres" by Jacqueline Taieb, "Les Cheveux Dans Les Yeux" by Cosette, "Je Suis Folle De Tant T'Aimer" by Arlette Zola, "Je Ne Veux Plus D'Accordeon" by Adele, "Cette Fille N'Est Rien Pour Lui" by Maryrene, "Fallait Pas Ecraser La Queue Du Chat" by Clothilde, "Aucune Fille Au Monde" by Pussy Cat, "Les Yeux Doux" by Olivia, "Palladium" by Liz Brady, "Tu Fais Partie Du Passe" by Zouzou, "Rien N'Y Fait Rien N'Y Fera" by Catherine Ribeiro, "La Porte A Cote" by Christine Delaroche, "Dis-nous Dylan" by 5 Gentlemen, "My Name Is Eduard" by Edouard, "Elles Ne Veulent Pas De Moi" by Les 1515, "Une Fille Mais Qu'Est Que C'Est" by Les Anges, "Pas Question" by Eric Charden, "Le Jour La Nuit Le Jour" by Les Lionceux, "Ma Theorie" by Steff, "Changement De Main" by Claude Richi, and "Boomerang" by Jean-Claude Brialy & Serge Gainsbourg. One of the grooviest French rockers of all time – the amazing Jacques Dutronc, a cat who sounds as cool as he looks on the cover! Dutronc's groove is an unabashedly hip one – a style that borrows a bit from the Brit mod scene of the 60s, but also layers in plenty of French styles too – all with a brash, masculine sensibility that's often a bit funky too! To us, Dutronc's music is right up there with the best 60s work by Serge Gainsbourg or France Gall – and this killer collection really offers a great look at his best recordings for Vogue Records. Big Crown, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A 50th anniversary celebration of Italy's Capital Radio in 1968 – a set that combines familiar English rock of the late 60s with a huge amount of Italian pop as well! The mix of modes is great – and the 2CD package goes a long way towards illustrating the way that non-Anglo countries on the European scene were served some of the hipper British and American music of the time, in ways that effortlessly blend with more homegrown efforts of the era. Given that American radio was almost completely closed to non-English language tunes, there's a generosity to the spirit here that's really great – and which goes to show why Anglo rock dominated the globe so much in the following decade. Yet here, the time is 1968, the place the Italian scene – illustrated in a set of 42 tracks by artists who include Equipe 84, Caterina Caselli, Gianno Morandi, The Byrds, Beach Boys, I Dik Dik, I Nomadi, The Who, Lucia Dall, Temptations, The Band, The Rokes, Lugi Tengo, I Camaleonti, Buffalo Springfield, Velvet Underground, Otis Redding, Francoise Hardi, Giorgio Gaber, Fabrizio De Andre, Canned Heat, New Trolls, The Monkees, Serge Gainsbourg, and Mina. Columbia, 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
The cover's a bit chilling, given that the record was Leonard Cohen's last – and it almost makes us feel as if he's looking back on all of us, from the brightness of the great beyond! But even without that image, the album's got a vibe that really lives up to its title – impossible to consider in these days after Cohen's passing – which feels almost inevitable in the pacing and mood of the music, and the liner notes' explanation that he was in such pain during the recording of the set, that his son Adam had to work as the guiding force to bring all the music together. Cohen's often talking more than singing, but shifts easily between both modes – in a raspy voice that almost makes him feel as if he's taking a late-life turn towards a Serge Gainsbourg mode of presentation – even though his lyrical content is very much his own. The poetry of the man is still extremely powerful – and still a masterpiece in economy that so many other songwriters should heed – on titles that include "It Seemed The Better Day", "Steer Your Way", "Traveling Light", "If I Didn't Have Your Love", "You Want It Darker", "Treaty", and "Leaving The Table".
