Champian Fulton & Scott HamiltonThings We Did Last Summer ... CD
Blau (Spain), 2017. New Copy ... $11.99
Champian Fulton's in a great setting here – working alongside tenorist Scott Hamilton, whose presence only seems to deepen the sound of the record! Make no mistake, Champian's great on her own – a hell of a pianist, and one with a very strong voice that seems to instantly wrap up generations of piano jazz expression, but find a way to make it come across fresh and new – which is very much what Hamilton could do so well in his younger years, which makes him a great match for Fulton. Champian also sings on the record, too – although it's clear that the presentation gives most of the focus on the instrumentation, which is rock-solid throughout. Ignasi Gonzalez is on bass, and Esteve Pi is on drums – and titles include "Black Velvet", "I Cried For You", "The Things We Did Last Summer", "Runnin Wild", "My Future Just Passed", and "When Your Lover Has Gone". ✨✧ Scott HamiltonSwinging Young Scott ... LP
Famous Door, 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the earliest albums as a leader from tenorist Scott Hamilton – definitely the young talent promised in the title, but already one with a very traditional sense of tone and timing! Hamilton's horn takes the lead, but gets strong support from Warren Vache on trumpet – whose well-crafted, economical lines never overwhelm the solos of the leader! The group's also got very deft piano work from John Bunch – who may well be the secret hero of the record – plus bass from Michael Moore and drums from Butch Miles. Scott's got this great rasp in his tone on some of the best numbers – a quality that hardly belies his age at all – and which has echoes of Lester Young and Ben Webster at their best. Titles include "Scott's Idea", "Thru For The Night", "Imagination", and "Warren's Rush". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Eddie Higgins/Scott Hamilton/Ken PeplowskiIt's Magic Vol 1 (On Demand CDr pressing) ... CD
Venus (Japan), 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
Eddie Higgins' piano work on Venus Records is already a pretty great proposition – but here it's augmented wonderfully by saxophone lines from Scott Hamilton and Ken Peplowski! The set's got a laidback, easygoing groove that's mighty nice – one that has Higgins' piano lines at the helm of the session, with soulful, late nite solos from Hamilton on tenor, and Peplowski on both tenor and clarinet. The rest of the group features Jay Leonhart on bass and Ben Riley on drums – and titles ont his volume include "Ghost Of A Chance", "It's Magic", "I Got It Bad", "I Never Knew", and "Mood Indigo". CD

✨✧ Scott Hamilton QuartetDanish Ballads & More ... CD
Stunt (Denmark), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Unfamiliar songs, but blown in a very traditional mode – that deep, rich tenor sound that Scott Hamilton has had since his start – an approach that sounds even fresher here in the context of some nicely unusual tunes! Hamilton's only improved over the years, and his level of expression on ballads is backed by a gently swinging trio that features Jan Lundgren on piano, Hans Backenroth on bass, and Kristian Leth on drums. Lundgren's touch is great – slightly sprightly, and a very nice balance to the tenor – but it's also clear that Hamilton's the star of the show, and gets plenty of space to stretch out and blow some open, creative solos – on titles that include "Dance Song", "The Wharf", "In The Still Of The Woods", "My Little Anna", "Take It Easy", and "In Love With Copenhagen". Dave Mackay & Vicky HamiltonDave Mackay & Vicky Hamilton ... LP
Impulse, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $14.99
One of the grooviest albums of the late 60s – a lost vocal treasure from the team of Dave MacKay & Vicky Hamilton! The pair were sort of like a hip version of Jackie & Roy – usually singing together on their tracks, with a mixed male/female vocal approach that sounds totally great – and which really fits the breezy mood of the tunes on the set! Dave himself plays Fender Rhodes and piano on the album – along with an odd little combo that includes flute and tenor played by Ira Schulman, percussion by Francisco Aguabella, and guest sitar by Bill Plummer. The whole thing's got an amazing feel that's equal parts groovy jazz and sunshine pop – and tunes include a great reading of Tom Scott's "Blues For Hari", Flip Nunez's classic "See You Later", and the original tracks "Jacques The Junkman", "Samba For Vicky", "Now", and "Moon Rider". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousSacred Soul – Dave Hamilton's Raw Detroit Gospel 1969 to 1974 ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The lost gospel music legacy of Detroit producer Dave Hamilton – a key force in funk and soul in the Motor City in the 60s – where he developed an amazing sound that he also brought to his spiritual recordings as well! Dave's approach was always grittier than that of Motown or some of the sweeter labels in the city – as you might have heard on some of the great Ace/Kent collections of his rare singles and unissued recordings over the years – all compilations that really lay the groundwork for this one, which is brimming over with raw gospel material from a very soulful stretch in the genre! The work here is like the hippest soul gospel recorded by Chess/Checker or Jewel/Paula at the same time – strongly associated with secular soul in terms of instrumentation, arrangements, and production – and graced with message-oriented lyrics that are perfect for the heady times of the late 60s and early 70s. Some of the tracks were issued on the Sacred Sounds label back in the day, and are mixed with some others found in Hamilton's archives – all given the usual great support by Ace with a big booklet of notes and photos. Titles include "Grown Old & Feeble" by The Soul Inspirers, "I Still Remember" by Umble Faith, "Someday We'll Be Together" by The National Independent Singers, "Savoir On The Throne" by Mr Bo, "Pressing On" by The Silver Harps, "I'm Not Ready To Die" by The Scott Singers, "Down Here Praying" by The Detroit Silvertones, "The Little Light" by The Fantastic Voices Of Joy, "I Heard A Voice (part 1)" by Sensational Angelettes, "If I Had My Way" by OC Tolbert & Clara White Houston, and "Life's Pathway" by Rev Evans. Champian, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99
Champian Fulton's an artist of many talents – both a great singer and a strong pianist too – at a level that's way more than just a vocalist shading in her lyrics with piano – as part of this set is instrumental, and really showcases Fulton's strong touch on the keys! The set features a nice mix of standards and bop classics – including three Charlie Parker numbers – and the group features Hide Tanaka on bass and Fukutushi Tainaka on drums – with guest work from tenorist Scott Hamilton on two tracks, and trumpeter Stephen Fulton on four others. Titles include "Bluebird", "Just Friends", "Quasimodo", "Star Eyes", "This Is Always", "Dearly Beloved", "Yardbird Suite", and "If I Should Lose You". CD

Famous Door/Progressive, 1977. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A really great later album from vibist Red Norvo – one that not only features some great small combo work of his own, but which also boasts some strong tenor from a young Scott Hamilton! But Norvo and Hamilton are only part of the group here – which also includes Dave McKenna on piano, really finding some great space in the lead – plus Richard Davis on bass and Connie Kay on drums, a nicely understated rhythm duo who give the set a looseness that really seems to bring out the best in everyone. Titles include "I Love You", "Hindustan", "All Of Me", "There Will Never Be Another You", "Undecided", and "A Ghost Of A Chance". CD features 3 bonus alternate takes, too! CD
