Beaver & KrauseIn A Wild Sanctuary/Gandharva/All Good Men ... CD
Warner/Righteous (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99
A trio of classics from this electronic duo – all brought together in a single set! First up is In A Wild Sanctuary – one of the best records ever from Beaver and Krause – largely because there's not so much noodling! This one features the pair on moog and organ, with help from Dave Grusin on piano, Milt Holland on percussion, Howard Roberts on guitar, and Bud Shank on reeds. The sound isn't jazz at all – but more a mix of spacey grooves and bubbling bits, with much more of a song-like structure than on other records. There's a few nice cuts here that almost hit a groove, and even when they don't, they still have a nice stripped down moogy sound that's very pleasing. Titles include "Spaced", "Salute To The Vanishing Bald Eagle", "People's Park", "Walking Green Algae Blues", and "Another Part Of Time". Gandharva is a cool mixture of rock and electronics – a perfect example of the Beaver & Krause team at their best! The ensemble on this one is bigger than usual, and the players includes jazz musicians like Mike Bloomfield, Gerry Mulligan, and Howard Roberts – but Beaver & Krause still play a lot of moog, though, and the songs are pretty groovy – although a little short. Side 2 was recorded at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Titles include "Soft/White", "Walkin By The River", "Walkin", "Nine Moons In Alaska", "Bright Shadows", and "Short Film For David". All Good Men is a higher concept album than usual for the team of Beaver & Krause – a record that still features plenty of cool moog and electronics by the pair, but which also has them teamed up with arranger Jimmie Haskell in a set of tunes that mixes older themes with original numbers! A fair bit of tracks here have vocals – either by Krause, or by female vocalists Cris Williamson, Adrienne Anderson, or Elisabeth Wilson – plus the "celestial choir" on a few tracks. There's a hearkening back here that's a bit confused at some moments – mixing Scott Joplin with the then-common apology to Native American mode – but things sound best on the original numbers, which have picked up a groove a bit more than before, and even have some nice warmer tones we really like. Titles include the spacey spinner "Between The Sun & The Rain", plus "Loves Of Col Evol", "Sweet Williams", "Bluebird Canyon Stomp", "Looking Back Now", "Child Of Morning Sun", and "All Good Men". ✨✧ Gary BartzMusic Is My Sanctuary ... LP
Capitol, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A fantastic bit of jazz funk fusion – and one of the landmark 70s albums produced by Larry Mizell! This is Gary Bartz's second (and most amazing) collaboration with Larry Mizell – a studio genius who could focus on the best talent of a jazz artist, then expand it using additional keyboards, percussion, and often a sweet bank of chorus vocals to give the tracks an extra soulful sound! By the time of this album, Larry had already worked to great fame with Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, and Johnny Hammond – and the record has him turning his talents towards Gary Bartz to unlock a whole hidden side of soulful expression that would never be matched again! The title cut – "Music Is My Sanctuary" – is a jazz fusion classic in anyone's book, and it features characteristic Mizell keyboards alongside Gary's soulful sax, augmented by a deep vocal chorus that's simply fantastic. Other highlights include "Carnaval De L'Esprit" and "Macaroni" – and the whole album's nice! LP, Vinyl record album

Earth Wind & FireIllumination ... CD
Sanctuary, 2005. Used ... $3.99
Earth Wind & Fire's most ambitiously orchestrated records of recent years – one that pairs the legendary funk/soul/pop collective with contemporary players such as Will I Am of Black Eyed Peas, Raphael Saadiq, Floetry, Big Boi of Outkast, Sleepy Brown and others! Believe us, we were as skeptical as the rest of you when this project first materialized, so it's really a wonderful surprise to report that it works very well! The album is essentially a modern, uptempo neo soul effort by a group that just happens to be legendary – with clean vocals and horns by the group, and warm production by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Will I Am and Raphael Saadiq. It may not be a classic on par with the 70s work, but it's easily the best Earth Wind & Fire album in at least a decade! Tracks include "Lovely People" feat Will I Am, "Show Me The Way" feat Raphael Saadiq, "Work It Out", "Elevated People" feat Floetry, "Pass You By", "Pure Gold" and more! 13 tracks in all. CD

Do these guys ever falter? We think not, and this album's proof that the O'Jays sound just keeps on going strong as the years roll on! The whole thing's wonderful – with that super mellow sound that's been the group's strongest suit in recent years – overflowing with great Eddie Levert touches that have a really timeless feel, with vocals that are as effortlessly harmonious as the album is smooth and warm! Titles include "Imagination", "Make UP", "Repair Man", "Made It Back", "One Good Woman", "Busy Tonight", and "I Would Rather Cry". Includes a bonus track too – "The Christmas Song". CD

One of the greatest albums from The Kinks – the kind of material that pulled them strongly past their bluesy, garagey roots – into a role that has them giving some of the clearest, keenest visions of 20th Century British society – with all of its joys and worries! The tunes here are wonderful – well-penned little odes to the common man and fading scenes and styles of the UK – presented together as a sublime portrait of a late 60s England that hardly any other group would try to touch – all with wit and wisdom from the great Ray Davies, and loads of tuneful work from the rest of the band. Titles include "Do You Remember Walter?", "Picture Book", "Sitting By The Riverside", "Village Green", "All Of My Friends Were There", and "The Village Green Preservation Society". Rough Trade/Sanctuary (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 5 x 7 inch set (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Fantastic early genius from The Fall – and a real turning point too! The songs here represent a time when Mark E Smith was really getting his groove on – finding a way to balance noise and humor like nobody else before or since – and working in a subtle surprisingly literate agenda, while still able to match the energy of the rest of the scene at the time! In a word, these singles could play to the masses while transforming them at the same time – all with a power that made the group completely unique, and imbued with a richness that really rewards repeated listenings over the years. Box set features four full singles – one of them a 2 x 7" release – all with original artwork – the songs "How I Wrote Elastic Man", "City Hobgoblins", "Totally Wired", "Putta Block", "The Man Whose Head Expanded", "Ludd Gang", "Kicker Conspiracy", "Wings", "Container Drivers (John Peel session)", and "New Puritan (John Peel session)". 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Miles DavisBitches Brew ... LP
Columbia, 1969. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! The record itself is a key cap to Miles Davis' already-groundbreaking years of the 60s – a bold step forward, not just for his nascent electric sound, but also for jazz in general – and the benchmark by which so many other records would be judged (and fail) in years to come! The double-length set makes full use of all four sides of the record – expanding the flow (as well as the lineup) of the original Davis modal vision – and using all players to amazing effect, so much so that most players here turn out some of their best recorded work ever! The lineup is virtually a whose who for the sound of fusion in the 70s – including Wayne Shorter on soprano sax, Bennie Maupin on bass clarinet, Joe Zawinul and Chick Corea on keyboards, John McLaughlin on guitar, Dave Holland on bass, and Lenny White and Jack DeJohnette on drums – plus Jumma Santos and Don Alias on added percussion. Titles include "Pharaoh's Dance", "Spanish Key", "Sanctuary", "Bitches Brew", "John McLaughlin", and "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down". LP, Vinyl record album

Yet another slice of electric Miles Davis at the the Fillmore West in 1970 – not the material that appeared on the Black Beauty album, but instead a live broadcast that originally appeared on KSAN radio – which captures the group in very similarly firey performance! The lineup features Chick Corea on electric and acoustic piano, Steve Grossman on soprano sax, Dave Holland on basses, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Airto on percussion – really stretching out on long tracks that are set with a strong Bitches Brew fire – no surprise, as that famous album was issued in the same year! The whole thing marks a seminal moment in Miles' career – as the group stretches out on titles that include "Sanctuary", "Bitches Brew", "Spanish Key", "It's About That Time", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "This", "Directions", and "Miles Runs The Voodoo Down". JazztronikBB1 ... CD
Pony Canyon (Japan), 2018. Used ... $14.99
The first music we've heard in quite awhile from Jazztronik – and a set that has them sounding even more funk-oriented than before! We've always loved the creations of leader Ryota Nozaki – even his mellower moments – but this time around, he really steps into new territory by working with a larger group that's heavy on horns, and which has some especially strong bass and drums – all to create a vibe that's more 70s funk than you might expect! But there's also some richer, more sophisticated currents too – that strong sense of arrangement that Nozaki has really developed over the years, worked out here in live horn charts that can be extremely beautiful. Some tracks feature soul-styled vocals by singers Eliana and Aisha, and some are instrumental – and tracks include "Dolphin Smile", "Spotlight", "Caprice", "Sanctuary", "Deja Vu", and "Meguru (2017 version)". ✨✧ SijiGod-Given ... CD
BBE (UK), 2004. Used ... $3.99
Mindblowing stuff – the first album from Siji, and an immediate classic that grabbed us right away! Siji's been bumping around on various records for the past few years – lending his vocal talents to a number of great club tracks and singles – but this is his first full album, and it's a heck of a great debut! There's a righteousness to the album that's undeniable – a vocal style that's spacey, warm, and mellow – and which puts Siji somewhere in a trajectory of soul that runs from Stevie Wonder to Eric Roberson! The tunes have a bit of an influence from the New York Osunlade scene – no surprise, considering that Osunlade's offered Siji a lot of support over the years – but the songwriting itself is completely fresh, and crackles out with a personal energy that only seems to deepen as the set moves on. Incredible stuff, with a sound all its own – and titles that include "Sanctuary", "Watching You Watching Me", "Running Away", "God-Given", "Starting Over", "Feels Like", "Bittersweet", "I Believe", and "The Day Ahead". Ropeadope, 2017. New Copy ... $8.99 13.99
Trumpeter David Weiss never fails to give us amazing music, no matter what the setting – and here, he's working with his Point Of Departure group – an ultra-hip lineup that features Myron Waldon and JD Allen on tenor sax, each taking on different parts of the record – plus guitar, bass, and drums – as well as a bit of extra Fender Rhodes from Weiss himself! As with some of David's other projects, the music is a look back at the future of modern jazz in the late 60s and early 70s – with a spotlight on amazing compositions by artists like Wayne Shorter, Kenny Cox, Joe Henderson, Tony Williams, Charles Moore, and John McLaughlin – music that was years ahead of its time when written, and which gets even more forward-thinking treatment here by the group. Rhythms are tentative and angular at some points – really allowing for shades of color between the trumpet and tenor – and other points are bolder, and unlock some deeper righteous power in the compositions. Completely captivating work from Marisa Anderson – an instrumentalist who could easily match the groundbreaking sound of Takoma Records in the 60s with her work on albums like this! Marisa's a guitarist at heart – and mostly plays electric and acoustic on the record, using the instrument in this spare, open sort of way – far from American roots, but also very American at the same time – informed by all the modern changes on the instrument in the hands of the acoustic underground in recent decades, but delivered with a very down-to-earth approach that's extremely beautiful. Anderson plays a few other instruments over the course of the record – including a bit of Wurlitzer electric piano – bu the guitar dominates, in a wonderful way – on titles that include "Lift", "Sanctuary", "Surfacing", "Cloud Corner", "Sun Song", "Lament", "Slow Ascent", and "Pulse".
