Gary BartzMusic Is My Sanctuary ... LP
Capitol, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
A fantastic bit of jazz funk fusion – and one of the landmark 70s albums produced by Larry Mizell! This is Gary Bartz's second (and most amazing) collaboration with Larry Mizell – a studio genius who could focus on the best talent of a jazz artist, then expand it using additional keyboards, percussion, and often a sweet bank of chorus vocals to give the tracks an extra soulful sound! By the time of this album, Larry had already worked to great fame with Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, and Johnny Hammond – and the record has him turning his talents towards Gary Bartz to unlock a whole hidden side of soulful expression that would never be matched again! The title cut – "Music Is My Sanctuary" – is a jazz fusion classic in anyone's book, and it features characteristic Mizell keyboards alongside Gary's soulful sax, augmented by a deep vocal chorus that's simply fantastic. Other highlights include "Carnaval De L'Esprit" and "Macaroni" – and the whole album's nice! LP, Vinyl record album

Ernie WattsSanctuary ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1986. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
Quite possibly Ernie Watts' biggest album ever – a set of soulful fusion done for Quincy Jones' Qwest imprint with tight arrangements and production from keyboardist Don Grusin! As with other Watts albums of the time, there's as much soul going on here as there is jazz – vocals from Phil Perry on 3 of the album's tracks, and an overall sound that picks up plenty of rhythms and instrumental inflections from 80s soul – yet leaves more than enough solo space for Ernie's work on alto, soprano, and tenor sax. Titles include "Homeland", "Cowboy Dreams", "She Feels Good", "Taj", "Chinook", "City Speak", and "The Peace Offering". CD

De La SoulGrind Date (with bonus instrumentals) ... LP
Sanctuary/BMG, 2004. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
The first post-Tommy Boy De La Soul album – and it's a winner! We've been on board with De La throughout their long career – anyone with open ears must know that even their spottiest records (and this is NOT one of those) feature at least a handful of treasure tracks. Two songs into Grinda Date you'll find the stellar "Verbal Clap", one of J Dilla's finest blueprint era inspired productions ever, with precise on beat rhymes by De La. Other highlights include "He Comes" with Ghostface, a soulful track that would sound just as great on Ghost's Supreme Clientele. At the time it came out, this was De La's best album since Stakes Is High, we might actually like this one just as much. Featuring production by Dave West, J Dilla, Madlib and 9th Wonder – plus guest appearances by Yummy, Ghostface, Carl Thomas, MF Doom, Common and others. Other tracks include "The Future", "Much More" feat Yummy, "The Grind Date", "Shopping Bags", "Days Of Our Lives" with Common, "Come On Down", "Rock Co. Kane Flow" featuring MF Doom and more. Alexis KornerEvery Day I Have The Blues – The 60s Anthology (3CD set) ... CD
Sanctuary/Grapefruit (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
Fantastic 60s material by Alexis Korner – a completely unique British artist that we'd rank right up there with the best by Georgie Fame or Zoot Money! Like Fame and Money, Korner was strongly influenced by American sounds – particularly blues, but also a range of jazz, soul, and gospel too – which he started out initially aping, then soon moved the music into something that was very much his own! Korner's too often written up as a blues musician – but like the hippest mod moments of the mid 60s in London, his music quickly moves way past the familiar styles, and opens the door to something very new and groovy – but also never going to straighter rock modes, ala The Rolling Stones or Manfred Mann. This overstuffed 3CD set brings together so many great moments from Korner's early career – not just album tracks and singles, but also some BBC recordings, and other obscure tunes – all packed in a box that features 69 tracks and a big booklet of notes! TrickyVulnerable ... CD
Sanctuary, 2003. Used ... $3.99
Tricky's making strong music again! In the minds of a lot of fans, Tricky stepped over big time in the last half of the 90's and first couple of '00s. With a couple exceptions, the soundscapes he kept dropping grew so self-indulgently dark and gritty, that his work became nearly unlistenable. Just when we were starting to forget his pedigree as one of the most innovative figures in electronic music and one of the architects of trip hop, here he is with his best album in nearly a decade! Vulnerable is a self-conscious attempt at a real pop record, but his inherently dark edges and shrapnel-infected vocals accompanying Costanza's sweet girly lead has the same feel that made Maxinquaye such a great album. Tricky's handling of the keys, drums and programming are designed to head straight out with the hooks – keeping the lengthy noise passages and indulgent wankery that plagues his lesser stuff on the floor. The choice of material, including covers of "Dear God" and "The Love Cats" in pert near perfect. All is forgiven, Tricky! Other tracks include "Stay", "Antimatter", "Ice Pick", "Car Crash", "Hollow" and "Moody". This is an enhanced CD, with bonus film and video footage. CD

✨✧ Earth Wind & FireIllumination (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Sanctuary/BMG, 2005. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Earth Wind & Fire's most ambitiously orchestrated records of recent years – one that pairs the legendary funk/soul/pop collective with contemporary players such as Will I Am of Black Eyed Peas, Raphael Saadiq, Floetry, Big Boi of Outkast, Sleepy Brown and others! Believe us, we were as skeptical as the rest of you when this project first materialized, so it's really a wonderful surprise to report that it works very well! The album is essentially a modern, uptempo neo soul effort by a group that just happens to be legendary – with clean vocals and horns by the group, and warm production by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Will I Am and Raphael Saadiq. It may not be a classic on par with the 70s work, but it's easily the best Earth Wind & Fire album in at least a decade! Tracks include "Lovely People" feat Will I Am, "Show Me The Way" feat Raphael Saadiq, "Work It Out", "Elevated" feat Floetry, "Pass You By", "Pure Gold" and more! LP version features bonus tracks – instrumentals of "Lovely People" and "Elevated". LP, Vinyl record album

Sanctuary/Castle (UK), 1982. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The kinetic fifth (?) album by the mighty Fall – a two-disc special edition featuring a slew of previously unreleased bonus material! At this point the Fall had the two-drummer thing going on, for extra kick, but of the course the most intense drubbing came from Mark E. Smith's mic, which was at it's most brutally sardonic! The main album on the first disc includes the tracks "The Classical", "Jawbone And The Air Rifle", "Hip Priest", "Fortress/Deer Park", "Just Step S'ways", "Who Makes The Nazis?" and more. Disc two includes "Deer Park" and "Who Makes The Nazis?" from a 1981 Peel Session, the originally 7-inch only single "I'm Into CB", "plus live versions of "Session Music", "Jazzed Up Punk S**t", "And This Day", "Deer Park" and more! Pye/Sanctuary, 1968. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums from The Kinks – the kind of material that pulled them strongly past their bluesy, garagey roots – into a role that has them giving some of the clearest, keenest visions of 20th Century British society – with all of its joys and worries! The tunes here are wonderful – well-penned little odes to the common man and fading scenes and styles of the UK – presented together as a sublime portrait of a late 60s England that hardly any other group would try to touch – all with wit and wisdom from the great Ray Davies, and loads of tuneful work from the rest of the band. This version offers up the original 15 track UK album – with titles that include "Do You Remember Walter?", "Picture Book", "Sitting By The Riverside", "Village Green", "All Of My Friends Were There", and "The Village Green Preservation Society". Miles DavisBitches Brew ... CD
Columbia, 1969. Used 2 CDs ... $4.99
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! The record itself is a key cap to Miles Davis' already-groundbreaking years of the 60s – a bold step forward, not just for his nascent electric sound, but also for jazz in general – and the benchmark by which so many other records would be judged (and fail) in years to come! The double-length set makes full use of all four sides of the record – expanding the flow (as well as the lineup) of the original Davis modal vision – and using all players to amazing effect, so much so that most players here turn out some of their best recorded work ever! The lineup is virtually a whose who for the sound of fusion in the 70s – including Wayne Shorter on soprano sax, Bennie Maupin on bass clarinet, Joe Zawinul and Chick Corea on keyboards, John McLaughlin on guitar, Dave Holland on bass, and Lenny White and Jack DeJohnette on drums – plus Jumma Santos and Don Alias on added percussion. Titles include "Pharaoh's Dance", "Spanish Key", "Sanctuary", "Bitches Brew", "John McLaughlin", and "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down". CD

Miles DavisBlack Beauty – Miles Davis At Fillmore West ... CD
Sony, 1970. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
Four sides of noisy, funky, stretched-out playing from Miles Davis – recorded at the Fillmore West, but with an intensity that matches some of Miles' crazy electric recordings from Japan during the early 70s! The music is a powerful blast of music that stretches out over the double-length set of the package – with a style that moves from heavy-duty avant playing, then back to more mellow grooving, then kicks it out nice and hard again – a heavy dose of rock mixed in with the fusion, but still plenty jazzy throughout. In all, the record is probably one of the most heavy-duty that the Miles electric group recorded in the 70s – and the lineup on the set features Steve Grossman on saxes, Chick Corea on electric piano, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Airto on percussion. Tracks include "Spanish Key", "Directions", "Masqualero", "It's About That Time", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "Bitches Brew", "Willie Nelson", and "Sanctuary". CD

Columbia, 1970. Used 4 CDs ... $29.99
A massive moment for Miles Davis – legendary live performances at both the Fillmore East and Fillmore West from 1970 – presented here in their entirety for the first time ever! Part of the record features Miles' work that appeared in edited form on the Miles Davis At Fillmore record – but issued here without the edits, so that you can really hear the group take off in unbridled, Bitches Brew-like energy – served up by a lineup that includes Steve Grossman on tenor and soprano sax, Chick Corea on Fender Rhodes, Keith Jarrett on organ, Dave Holland on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Airto on percussion and flute. The set then also includes material recorded in April at the Fillmore West – but all unissued tracks, and not the material that was on the Black Beauty album at all. These tracks feature a similar lineup, but without Keith Jarrett – on a few long tracks. The set separates out all the tunes with great clarity and better mastering than before – and adds 100 minutes to the Fillmore East set. Titles include "Directions", "The Mask", "It's About That Time", "Bitches Brew", "Spanish Key", "Sanctuary", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "Footprints", "Paraphernalia", "Miles Runs The Voodoo Down", "Willie Nelson", and "The Theme". The greatest moment ever from the legendary Bobbi Humphrey – a funky, soulful flute player who had more than her share of great moments over the years! This set may well be the summation of all the genius that Humphrey had to offer – a collaboration with genius producer Larry Mizell, at a level that matches is Blue Note classics with Donald Byrd, or the Music Is My Sanctuary album with Gary Bartz – a groundbreaking blend of jazz instrumentation and studio technique! The sound is never smooth, nor commercial – and instead, Bobbie's flute and vocals soar out majestically on these long tracks with building keyboard lines, subtle chorus parts, and touches of bass that really transform the rhythms past conventional soul fusion of the period. Barbara RuskinLittle Of This – The Barbara Ruskin Songbook ... CD
President (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $3.99 15.98
A dreamy collection of work by Barbara Ruskin – a lesser-known girl singer from the 60s Brit scene, but one who's fast rising to the top of our list with her work on this great set! Barbara's got a style that's similar to, but a bit different than that of contemporaries like Sandie Shaw, Dusty Springfield, or Cilla Black – because (as you'd guess from the acoustic guitar on the cover), Barbara's got a bit more of an influence from folk music – and as her recordings progress, she picks up some nice trippier elements that expand her sound past the usual UK girl pop mode, into a headier style that we really love. There's plenty of jingle-jangle in the mix here – and the CD's extremely well done, with the kind of notes and images we'd expect from Sanctuary or Cherry Red! Titles include "Pawnbroker Pawnbroker", "Light Of Love", "Euston Station", "Song Without End", "On South Street", "Information", "Almost", "You Can't Blame A Girl For Trying", "The 24th Day Of July", "The Loneliest Word In The World", and "Yesterday's Coffee". The sound here is almost end-of-the-60s Shorter – as the tracks have an incredible amount of space, and might at times almost be dubbed "out". Shorter returns to his angular genius on tenor and soprano sax – crafting long, complicated lines that have a lot more edginess than we've heard from him in years! Blauklang, 2009. Used ... $3.99
Mostly original music from bassist Mark Sonksen – a host of really wonderful little numbers, handled with great depth and sensitivity by a trio that also includes Leandro Lopez Varady on piano and Andre Beasley on drums! There's a sound here that's as subtle as the image on the cover – but one that really grabs us in the end – freshly visionary piano trio numbers, penned with a range of feeling that you might only get in larger ensemble numbers – yet delivered with an intimate feeling that's much more striking in the end. Varady's piano is quite good – often understated, but powerful in that respect – and a few numbers feature electric keys instead of acoustic. Killer work by Astrud Gilberto – very different than her Verve sides of the 60s! The album was produced by Astrud, arranged by Deodato – and has that wonderful warm full jazz feel of her classic album on CTI, but also a bit more like some of the funky work of Jorge Ben at the time – choppy at the bottom, with a sound that's a bit samba, and a bit funky at times. Mike Longo and Deodato play keyboards on the session, giving it an electric groove that works perfectly with Astrud's soaring vocals – and the whole album really holds together wonderfully!
