✨✧ Slide HamptonSister Salvation ... LP
Atlantic, 1960. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Slide Hampton's first albums – and a massively hard-wailing set that will make any doubters sit up and take notice! The set really packs a punch – as Slide leads a hip group that features Freddie Hubbard, Richard Williams, Bernard McKinney, and George Coleman through some tightly woven arrangements that manage to swing with the grace of small combo work, yet wail with the intensity of a big band. Great solos pop out all over the set – and there's a soul jazz groove that makes the album sound like a classic Prestige session. Titles include "Asseveration", "Hi Fly", "Sister Salvation", and "A Little Night Music". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red & purple label pressing with deep groove.)

✨✧ Dizzy GillespieSoul & Salvation ... LP
Tribute, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A fantastic bit of late 60's funk, and a surprisingly slammin' record from Dizzy! The album's got tight, hard, choppy funk arrangements from Ed Bland – who went onto to do some great work at the Perception label – and the group features James Moody blowing hard lean funky solos right next to Diz, in the way that he'd do on some of his own funk work from the same time. The record is wonderful all the way through – killer heavy drums, heavy electric bass, searing sax solos from Diz and Moody – all produced with a mad mad full-on funk sound that will make your jaw drop! Titles include "Blue Chuchifrito", "Chicken Giblets", "Rutabega Pie", "The Fly Fox", "Stomped & Wasted" and "Casbah Melon". LP, Vinyl record album

AirtoVirgin Land ... LP
Salvation, 1974. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A great little fusion set from Airto – recorded in a mode that's a great bridge between his acoustic roots and some of his smoother albums in years to come! The sound has some key electric elements here – bits of bass, guitar, and keyboards – but there's still a strongly acoustic sound overall too, one that leaves plenty of room for Airto's unique jams on percussion, plus a bit of vocals from the lovely Flora Purim. Airto's got some top-shelf talents helping him out here – Billy Cobham on production, and Stanley Clarke and Milcho Leviev on arrangements – and there's a nice sense of darkness going on that even separates the album from some of Airto's other mid 70s sides on CTI. Titles include "Peasant Dance", "Musikana", "Virgin Land", and "Hot Sand". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some ring & edge wear.)

✨✧ Ghostface Killah36 Seasons ... CD
Salvation, 2014. Used ... $6.99
A really stunning set from Ghostface Killah – a record that has the Wu-Tang legend teaming up with soul group The Revelations – who produce the set, participate, and bring in a really wonderful old school vibe! The album's still hip hop at the core – with guest appearances from Pharoahe Monch, Nems, Kool G Rap, AZ, and others – but The Revelations also sing a bit too, bringing in a killer harmony approach that's often echoes by the instrumentation, which includes guitar from Wes Mingus and keyboards from Angela Johnson, who also sings a bit of backup as well. The whole thing's a stunning meeting of minds – almost 70s New Jersey soul filtered through 90s New York hip hop – and even the booklet is a collective effort, with comics from David Lapham and others. Titles include "Here I Go Again", "Dogs Of War", "The Battlefield", "Call My Name", "Pieces To The Puzzle", and a sweet cover of "Thin Line Between Love & Hate". CD
(Still sealed with hype sticker.)

✨✧ New York Jazz QuartetNew York Jazz Quartet In Concert In Japan ... LP
Salvation, 1975. Very Good ... $2.99
A great set by one of the more obscure groups to record for the CTI/Motown subsidiary Salvation – a great quartet that features Frank Wess on soprano sax and flute, Roland Hanna on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Ben Riley on drums. The group play in a mode that really pushes past that of Hanna and Wess' regular work – with Frank blowing in a more soulful, open style than usual; and Roland playing in a more rhythmic, slowly swinging kind of style. Tracks are long and open – with lots of space – but they manage to groove with a really subtle approach, thanks to some excellent bass work from Carter. Titles include "Little Waltz", "Well You Needn't", "Introspection", and "Mediterranean Seascape". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has peeling along the back paste-on.)

✨✧ Johnny HammondGambler's Life ... LP
Salvation, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing bit of jazz funk from Johnny Hammond – and one of his greatest LPs! This is the first album that Johnny recorded with Larry Mizell, cut right before the pair of them went onto do the landmark Gears album. While this one never became as famous as Gears, it's got some fantastic moments that are every bit as great – a perfect blend of Mizell's spacey fusion and Hammond's fiercely soulful soloing, with lots of great jazzy changes to keep the pace fresh throughout. Includes the great spacey jazz cuts "Star Borne" and "Yesterday Was Cool", the latter of which is an excellent piece of work by Larry Mizell – plus the cuts "Back To The Projects", "Gambler's Life", "Rhodesian Thoroughfare", and "Virgo Lady". Lloyd McNeilTreasures ... CD
Baobab/Soul Jazz (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A gem of a record from flute player Lloyd McNeil – an artist who flourished strongly during the spiritual jazz scene of the 70s, but who also seemed to always have his own sort of groove as well! Lloyd blows with the complexity and far-reaching sounds of contemporaries in the loft jazz scene, but he also opens up with more of a modal groove on most of these tracks too – a great pulse from a hip rhythm section that features Dom Salvador on piano, Cecil McBee on drums, Brian Brake on drums – and both Portinho and Ray Armando on percussion – players who add sensitive, subtle elements to the music to really resonate with the flute! Lloyd's sound is wonderful throughout – sometimes with the soulful focus of Roland Kirk, sometimes more open and cosmic, ala Prince Lasha – all depending on the special rhythms of the tunes. Titles include "Griot", "Salvation Army", "You Don't Know What Love Is", and "As A Matter Of Fact". CD

Tatham, Mensah, Lord, & Ranks6th EP ... 12-inch
2000 Black (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The record comes in a plain white sleeve, with little to announce its presence on the front – but that's A-OK with us, because this mighty quartet always make their presence known in the grooves of the record! The set begins with the bristling cosmic energy of "Life After Subway" – this jazzy tune with great keyboards and nice changes – all very much in the best spirit of the post-4Hero years! "The Blessings Of Salvation" follows – a mellower tune, but one that has this nice spacey crackle at the core – and things then take a deeper, more soulful turn on "The Return Of Pastor Shadrach" – rhythms flowing back and forth over each other, percussion dancing on beats dancing with keyboards! "Blue Signs" ends – maybe the most conventional groove on the set, but one with a moody bassy line that's completely wonderful! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Omni (Australia), 1950s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Great work from a series that never gets old – and which, if anything, seems to keep digging deeper and deeper with each new volume! If you know that, as the Louvin Brothers tell us, Satan Is Real – then you'll find plenty to spook your soul here – and we don't just mean the creepy cover! As with previous volumes, the tracks are a superbly-selected batch of songs from the farther reaches of country music – dealing with themes of temptation and salvation, awash with all the evils of mankind that weren't washed away in the pulpit! Titles include "Satan's Wife" by Jesse Floyd, "Turn Your Radio On" by The Statemen Quartet, "It's Nothing To Me" by Loy Clingman, "The Devil" by Ronnie Wolfe, "Satan's Suitcase" by Robert Zehm, "Devil Get Away From Me": by Roy & Georgia & The So & Sos, "Nightmare" by Jack Turner, Ghost Of A Honky Tonk Slave" by Cowbowy Howard Vokes, "On The Cross" by Margie Singleton, "Ghost Town" by Billy Massey, "Singing Shouting Praying" by Bill & Opal Carter with The Country Gents, "Fourth Man" by Reverend Tully McCoy, and "Please Devil" by Bobby Griggs. VariousQuentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (with poster) ... LP
Columbia, Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $40.99 41.98
A fantastic audio tribute to the greatness of the movie Once Upon A Time In Hollywood – a record that not only includes so many of the great tracks that were playing alongside the story, but which also recreates the way in which they were used! If you saw the film, you'll know that a good deal of the musical moments come from folks hopping in cars and turning on the radio – and this album version of the soundtrack includes a fair bit of DJ patter and radio ads – which really brings a great vibe to the full songs that are included. Titles include "Treat Her Right" by Roy Head & The Traits, "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show" by Neil Diamond, "Don't Chase Me Around" by Robert Corff, "Dinamite Jim (English version)" by I Cantori Moderni, "You Keep Me Hangin On (Quentin Tarantino edit)" by Vanilla Fudge, "Circle Game" by Buffy Saint Marie, "Jenny Take A Ride" by Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, "Hungry" by Paul Revere & The Raiders, "Hush" by Deep Purple, "Ramblin Gamblin Man" by Bob Seeger System, "Bring A Little Lovin" by Los Bravos, "Hey Little Girl" by Dee Clark, and "Son Of A Lovin Man" by Buchanan Brothers – plus the funky classic "Hector" by The Village Callers. ✨✧ Dom Um RomaoSpirit Of The Times ... LP
Muse, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible set of Brazilian jazz – one of the few albums that percussionist Dom Um Romao recorded as a leader, and sublime all the way through! The record's got a wonderful blend of funky fusion and Brazilian percussion – and features a group from two continents that includes Sivuca on organ, Dom Salvador on electric piano, Joe Beck on guitar, Jerry Dodgion on alto sax, Lloyd McNeill on flute, and Mauricio Smith on tenor, soprano, and flute. Includes the percussion jammer "Shake (Ginga Gingou)", the modal groover "Wait on the Corner", and the lively scatting tune "The Angels" – but the whole album's great, and other tracks include "The Salvation Army", "Kitchen", and "Lamento Negro".
