Salsoul OrchestraIt's Good For The Soul – The Vince Montana Years 1975 to 1978 (8CD set) ... CD
Salsoul/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 1970s. New Copy 8CD ... $54.99 68.99
Vince Montana might look a bit hokey on the cover – but over the course of a few short years, he helped transform the sound of the soulful dancefloor with the huge amount of music on this set – a stunning legacy that's presented here with expanded versions of the group's full albums from the time, which means a heck of a lot of rare bonus material too! The Salsoul Orchestra approach was a hit, right from the start – as Montana drew on all his earlier work in the Sigma Sound studios in Philly, blending soulful rhythms with larger orchestrations – all while keeping everything right on the money, so that the many elements in the music still found a way to groove in an essential way! The approach set the disco generation on fire – and although hundreds tried to copy the Montana/Salsoul approach, nobody could touch it – as you'll hear on this huge batch of 103 tracks – which include the full albums Salsoul Orchestra, Nice N Naasty, Magic Journey, Up The Yellow Brick Road, and How Deep Is Your Love – plus the Carol Williams album Lectric Lady, and the Charo record Cuchi Cuchi. There's a huge amount of bonus tracks here too – all sorts of 12" single remixes and other material – and the whole box is a disco delight all the way through! CD

2 stone stunners from Salsoul Orchestra – both of them great! "Magic Bird" has a very similar feel to Earth Wind & Fire's "Getaway" – stepping out with a soaring and righteous groove. And "Getaway" is a darker tune – lots of bass at the bottom, with these cool keyboards that really set the track off from other stuff by the group. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Salsoul/BMG (UK), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $32.99 36.98
Vibes, strings, keyboards, and vocals – the heavenly sound of the Salsoul Orchestra, one of the greatest disco outfits of the 70s! At the time, the group were ubiquitous on the dancefloor scene – but the amazing thing to our ears is how great these tunes still sound after all these years – still tight, right, and funky at the best places – gliding along with a sound that's classy yet soulful at the same time. The group were the brainchild of Philly soul maestro Vince Montana – who'd cut his teeth in the Sigma scene for years, and stepped out in the mid 70s with this fully-formed vision of a larger disco orchestra – one that countless others tried to copy, but could never catch the groove as well as Montana. Titles include "Getaway","Street Sense", "212 N 12th", "Seconds", "Ohh I Love It", "Runaway", "It Don't Have To Be Funky", "How High", "Magic Bird Of Fire", and "Take Some Time Out". Ahhhh . . . The Salsoul Orchestra at its finest, with Vince Montana at the helm, crafting some superb arrangements that have all of the positivity of the best funky club groove that made the group great – without any of the disco schlock of their contemporaries! The group's format is still head and shoulders above most of its imitators here – a perfect balance of larger orchestrations and tighter rhythms for the club – handled with all the best Philly elements that Montana brings to play. Titles include the superb soul track "Run Away", which features excellent lead vocals by Loleatta Holloway – one of her best tracks ever – and other instrumental titles include the funky "Getaway", plus "Magic Bird Of Fire", "It's A New Day", and "Alpha Centuri". The soaring debut of one of the greatest groups of the disco era – and one that would go onto be the sound of Salsoul Records too! The large mostly-instrumental ensemble is headed up by Vince Montana – who brings plenty of Philly disco touches into play with the group's wonderful blend of tight rhythms, jazzy instrumentation, and full strings – a blend that comes off perfectly, and with a surprisingly lean groove – thanks to Montana's vision, and help from arranger Ron Baker too. There's some surprisingly funky moments at times – that sharp edge of the Sigma Sound rhythm section – and titles include "Chicago Bus Stop", "Salsoul Rainbow", "Salsoul Hustle", "Tangerine", and "You're Just The Right Size". Far Out (UK), 2014. New Copy 2 CDs ... $7.99 19.99
A really wonderful project that was years in the making – a mix of American club and Brazilian elements – put together by a group that includes members of Azymuth and Banda Black Rio, as well as the legendary Arthur Verocai! Jose Roberto Bertrami's the strongest contributor here – and the music really echoes that great late 70s/early 80s point when the Azymuth fusion groove crossed over into tighter, funkier territory – coming off here with a sound that's got really universal appeal and a wickedly classic vibe overall – like some unusual cross-breeding of Brazilian grooves and Salsoul Records! Vocals are by Mia Mendes and Marcina Arnold, but the instrumentation is even better than the lyrics – filled with jazzy touches, blended with bits of strings, and perfectly produced all the way through. Really tremendous stuff – one of the freshest records we've heard from Far Out in years – with titles that include "Mystery", "Keep Believing", "Dead Dance", "The Last Carnival", "A Disco Supreme", "Vendetta", and "Don't Cha Know He's Alright". 2CD set features 8 more bonus remix tracks too! A sweet collection of grooves from the legendary Salsoul label – easily one of the hippest imprints on the New York scene of the 70s! This is the kind of Italian disco we can get our ears around! Bebu Silvetti is on keyboards, and at the helm of the orchestra – working here like an Italian Barry White, on a groove that's very similar to the best work of the Love Unlimited Orchestra. The tracks have a harder focus on the drums and beats than you'd expect – which punches things up nicely, and is a perfect complement to the breathy vocals and smooth Euro grooving over the top of the mix. Great stuff – a real treasure, and with a lot more soul than you'd expect! Titles include "Primitive Man", "Spring Rain", "Two Cups Of Coffee", "Voyage Of No Return", "Coconut Rain", and "Contigo". An incredible collection – and one that fills in a crucially under-documented side of the New York dancefloor generation – the wealth of special mixes and edits that were made for that city's important DJs for their own use in clubs! The package sorts through a mountain of never-issued acetates, and goes way past conventional disco or rare club collections – to showcase the special mixing talents these DJs brought to their re-presentation of the material – which was usually done on tape, then pressed onto acetate discs for their own private use! Those rare treasures are brought forth here – in a beautiful package that's also overflowing with fantastic notes that finally give this lost history its due – all handled by Al Kent – who's a hell of a mixer himself, as well as an underground club historian. Funky sound library instrumentals, done for Polish radio at the end of the 70s – which means they've got a fair bit of disco and club influences thrown into the rhythms for good measure! In fact, there's plenty of tracks here that would be great to drop on a disco dancefloor – although most are just a few minutes long, which will leave you moving fast for your next segue – as bumping basslines, soaring strings, and solo instrumentation serve up sounds that are maybe a tighter take on territory of groups like MSFB and Salsoul Orchestra from the US. A legendary collection of cuts from Salsoul Records – not just big classics from the label, but special Walter Gibbon mixes that are even more revolutionary than the original tunes! Gibbons has a really wonderful way with a cut – an expansive touch that really opens things up, and makes just about every number here kind of a mini-symphony in clubby soul! The core arrangements and orchestrations of the Salsoul cuts are already wonderful – handled by Vince Montana and other top studio talents – but Gibbons makes those core parts into something even more amazing with his mixes here – still allowing you to love the hooks and grooves, but also taking everything to an even more sophisticated level. Titles include "My Love Is Free" and "Ten Percent" by Double Exposure, "It's Good For The Soul" and "Magic Bird Of Fire" by Salsoul Orchestra, "Let No Man Put Asunder" by First Choice, and "Catch Me On The Rebound" by Loleatta Holloway. A key moment for the Philly soul scene of the 70s – and the first album to feature the MFSB backing group as a solo act on their own! The ensemble were responsible for key sounds on countless soul singles of the time – yet also find a way to soar beautifully on their own – in a sweet instrumental groove that matches the strength of Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra, and which was definitely a key inspiration for the sound of the Salsoul Orchestra! There's definitely a bit of early disco in the mix, but the style's more uptempo east coast overall – that pre-disco groove that was going down in the clubs – with larger strings added to a core group of funky rhythm players. Gamble & Huff production make the whole thing sparkle, and arrangements are by Vince Montana, Bobby Martin, and Jack Faith – on titles that include "Love Is The Message", "Cheaper To Keep Her", "TSOP", "Zack's Fanfare", "Touch Me In The Morning", and "My One & Only Love". Quite possibly our favorite album from MFSB – the legendary Philly instrumental group from the 70s! The record's completely sublime all the way through – and is perhaps the most perfect illustration of that subtle blend of funk, soul, and disco that makes the group so great – a sound that was copied by others like Salsoul Orchestra or Instant Funk, but almost never done as perfectly as on this sweet little set! The album's got some chorus vocals on a few cuts, but mostly hangs out in an instrumental mix of Philly rhythms, jazzy solo moments, and some soaring strings that really help fill up the groove. Classic soul, with a slight touch of funk – all served up in a limited vinyl-only package that really does justice to the longstanding legacy of the Free Soul series from Japan! Silver ConventionMadhouse ... CD
Midland/Goodtime, 1976. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
The Silver Convention groove is nicely opening up on this set – with an approach that actually seems a bit jazzier than the group's first two albums, bringing more of a focus on the keyboards of Silvester Levay – who's really the brainchild behind the whole group anyway! At some level, Levay seems to be more influenced by the best American club work of the time – especially the Salsoul records that just kept on getting better and better, deeper and deeper with each year. The orchestrations have a bit more soul than before, and mix nicely with the group's trademark Euro-disco sound. Levay wrote all the music on the set, co-produced, and arranged – and his well crafted keyboard lines are the brightest spots in the whole set. Titles include "I'm Not A Slot Machine", "The World Is A Madhouse", "Plastic People", "Fancy Party", "Everybody's Talkin About Love", "Dancing In The Aisle", and "Land Of Make Believe". CD
