✨✧ HamaHoumeissa ... LP
Sahel Sounds, 2019. New Copy ... $19.99
One of the coolest records we've heard on the Sahel Sound label to date – not the usual guitar material you might know from the imprint, but instead a batch of very cosmic keyboards – all instrumental, and spinning out into space with a vibe that's almost a collision between the best electronic styles of the 70s and 80s! There's almost more echoes here of the German Sky Records scene than you'd expect from the usual southern hemisphere sounds of Sahel – and Hama Moussa keeps things spare, but very melodic throughout – yet always without resorting to easier boogie keyboard modes, or some of the other retro-heavy styles that are more common of late. Titles include "Terroir", "Houmeissa", "Dounia", "Touareg", "Yeta Yeta", "Takamba", and "Wassa". LP, Vinyl record album

Luka ProductionsFalaw ... CD
Sahel Sounds, 2019. Used ... $8.99
Luka Productions is a showcase for the fantastic voice of Luka Guindo – a singer with this raspy charm that grabs you right away and really conveys the power of the tunes – so much so, you hardly need the English translations of the lyrics in the notes! The music is a blend of acoustic and electric modes – some sounds on djembe and ngoni, mixed with occasional rhythm programs handled by Luka – never too over the top, but really well-paced with the older elements – and occasionally augmented by contributions from guest singers too. Titles include "Bbni", "A Tara", "Koduma", "Falaw", "Badjan", "Tolobana", "Damonson", "Dogonodoon", and "Sitanba". CD
Also available Falaw ... CD 12.99

Mdou MoctarIlana – The Creator ... CD
Sahel Sounds, 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
An album titled after the creator, and a set that's maybe the most spiritual to date from Tuareg guitar genius Mdou Moctar – a record that comes across with a strong sense of focus right from the start, and which seems to have Mdou's guitar sounding even better than ever! The drums are maybe a bit stronger than on previous records – and maybe a bit more American-inspired too – which pushes the songs forcefully, while Moctar spins out these beautifully hypnotic lines on guitar – at a level that's made him a real global star in recent years. Titles include "Asshet Akal", "Inzigam", "Tarhatazed", "Ilana", and "Tumastin". CD

Abdallah Ag OumbadougouAnou Malane – Poesies Et Chansons De La Resistance Touaregs (with bonus download) ... LP
Sahel Sounds, 1995. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A seminal album in the Tuareg scene – a record that was initially issued on cassette in the mid-90s, and circulated in the underground as a bold statement of freedom and power! Abdallah Ag Oumbadougou has a guitar style that's fantastically complex, but instantly moving – tight lines interwoven with rhythms, and topped with lyrics that are as political as they are poetic – still very moving all these many years later. Titles include "Akokass", "Tenere", "Zagzane Bass Tila", "Ifitalane", "Anou Malane", and "Thingalene". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mammane SaniMammane Sani Et Son Orgue – La Musique Electronique Du Niger ... CD
Sahel Sounds, 1978. New Copy ... $12.99 15.98
Amazing sounds from Niger – some really hypnotic lines on electric organ – played in a way that's unlike any other use of the instrument we've ever heard! There's a flowing, water-like quality to the music that's almost in the territory of Terry Riley's work on organ – yet the overall approach is a bit more varied, too, with more shifts throughout the course of each song – creating these melodic pulses that are extremely beautiful, and a bit more tune-like than Riley. The album's hardly what you'd expect from an African album of the 70s – and is one of those completely unique, completely transcendent records that keeps on rewarding the listener for many years. Titles include "Lamru", "Lidda", "Bodo", "Tunan", and "Salamatu". CD

✨✧ Super Onze De GaoEnregistres Pour Yehia La Marabout ... LP
Mississippi/Sahel Sounds, Early 90s. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Some of the most intense music we've ever heard from the Mali scene – a set that takes the older takamba rhythms, but gives them a propulsive feel from lots of fast percussion and guitar lines – all served up with little other instrumentation at all, so that the whole record's this long rhythmic jam that's mighty amazing all the way through! Notes are spare, but the intense sound is more than enough – and some of the rawest Saharan sounds we've ever stocked. LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited white label pressing in a screened cover.)

VariousGao Rap – Hip Hop From Northern Mali ... LP
Sahel Sounds, 2017. Near Mint- ... $13.99
The first-time vinyl appearance of a number of contemporary hip hop tracks from Mali – all music that's existed only in the form of MP3 files before this release – which does a great job of pulling together disparate strands to document this scene! From what we can tell, none of the lyrics are in English – which maybe even makes the whole thing more captivating from a global perspective, if not with the usual appeal of American lyricists – and instead of beats or samples, many of these tracks seem to have instrumental passages on keyboards, plus sung vocal chorus bits – which again may well tie the whole thing to more familiar Mali music than hip hop. Titles include "Mon Son" by Fasso Madol, "Priate" by Adiobi with Baba Konate, "Djarabi" by Baba Konate with Filly, "Je Sui Vane De Toi" by Annane Sy, "Hey Koy" by Pheno S, and "He Ni Bonbay" by Askia Hamey. Includes an insert with notes, too! LP, Vinyl record album
