Big MaybelleSaga Of The Good Life & Hard Times (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Rojac/Traffic, 1967. New Copy ... $7.99 16.98
A great set that may well be Big Maybelle's best record ever – really rare work that's quite different than her famous work of the 50s! The set was recorded in the Criteria studios in Miami – and it's got a cool southern soul sound that's part Bobby Blue Bland bluesy soul, and part Muscle Shoals funk – fused together wonderfully by arranger Eric Knight – who really has a great ear for giving Maybelle a wicked new groove! Maybelle's vocals are a bit deeper than usual – much more soul than the blues of a decade before – and tracks include "This Bitter Earth", "How It Lies", "Old Love Never Dies", "My Mother's Eyes", and "Love Careless Love". Charles TylerSaga Of The Outlaws ... CD
Nessa, 1978. New Copy ... $13.99 16.99
A tremendous 70s album from Charles Tyler – one recorded with a rich, raw tone that's simply mindblowing! Tyler here has all of the deep soul we first came to love during his ESP years, but also a sound that's a bit more focused too – one that's extremely powerful, and boldly righteous – not exactly spiritual jazz, but also not loft jazz either. The sound is wonderful – Tyler's sharp-edged alto out front, in a group with trumpeter Earl Cross – a player who's a really great match in spirit and tone. Other group members include Steve Reid on drums, and bassist Ronnie Boykins and John Ore – players who each play in a different channel of the record! The set is billed as "a polyphonic sonic drama performed live by the Charles Tyler Ensemble" – which is a wonderful summation of the music. CD

Quite possibly our favorite of the wonderful 90s comeback sessions by Randy Weston – thanks in large part to the great players on the set! The album's a smaller group outing than some of Weston's others from the time – played by a septet that includes Billy Harper on tenor sax, Talib Kibwe on flute and alto, Benny Powell on trombone, and Billy Higgins on drums. Neil Clarke adds in a lot of additional percussion to the tunes – expanding the rhythms to match Weston's fluid work on piano – and the set features a great assortment of original tunes with all the evocative power of Weston's classic work. Titles include "Loose Wig", "Tangier Bay", "FEW Blues", "Uncle Neemo", "Lagos", "Night In Mbari", "Casbah Kids", and "Jahjuka". CD

Dee Dee BridgewaterThis Is New ... CD
Verve/Universal, 2002. Used ... $1.99
Dee Dee Bridgewater returns in wonderful form – singing a set of Kurt Weill compositions, working with small combo backings to infuse the tunes with a heck of a lot more soul than usual! Dee Dee's always been one of our favorite jazz singers, and we've got new appreciation for her talents in the way that she transforms older classics like "My Ship", "Bilbao Song", "This Is New", "Lost In The Stars", "Speak Low", and "Saga Of Jenny". Her approach to the material loses all the stark, rough edges of the songs' original readings – and makes them swing with new life in the presence of Dee Dee's warmth! CD

Wendell Harrison TribeGet Up Off Your Knees ... CD
Tribe/P-Vine (Japan), 2021. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
Fantastic new music from Detroit reedman Wendell Harrison – working here with a renewed version of the Tribe Records scene, at a level that makes the album one of his best in many years! Wendell blows tenor and bass clarinet, and his group here is mostly younger, lesser-known players – but who soar with Harrison in a mix of spiritual jazz modes and a few more rhythmic currents – all with the kind of powerful, progressive vibe that made the Tribe Records material of Harrison and his contemporaries so important in the 70s! Other musicians include Vincent Chandler on trombone, Steve Woods on flute, Luis Resto on piano, Walter White on trumpet, and Jacob Schwantz on guitar – although players shift often from track to track – and frequent Harrison partner Pamela Wise also provides a bit of keyboards, and the set features both sung vocals on two tracks from Pathe Jassi, and a recitation from Mbiyu Chui on another. Titles include "Revoltuion", "Siera", "Wandering Thoughts", "Samoulen Khale Yi", "What's Up", and "Saga Of A Carrot". CD

Quincy JonesRoots – Original Soundtrack ... LP
A&M, 1976. Sealed ... $5.99 7.99
Quincy Jones may be best remembered for his funky soundtrack work of the 70s – but the man can also hit a deeper, more serious vein when he wants – as he does on this ambitious album-length project inspired by the landmark Roots mini-series! The music isn't a straight soundtrack from the program, but instead evokes the longer narrative over the passage of its different selections – working as its own "saga of an American family", as it moves from African roots, through years of oppression, to moments of pride and power – amidst larger orchestrations from Jones, with help from Letta Mbulu on some key vocals, and more help from Bill Summers, James Cleveland, and even Lou Gossett. Titles include "Many Rains", "Free At Last", "Jumpin De Broom", "Ole Fiddler", "Boyhood To Manhood", "Oluwa", and "Motherland". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1975. Very Good+ ... $7.99
One of Henry Mancini's grooviest LPs from the 70s – a mixture of tight large arrangements with a smooth funky edge, similar to some of his best soundtrack work at the time! The rhythm section is great – with Harvey Mason on drums and Joe Sample on keyboards, and guitar by David T Walker and Dennis Budimir – and the album also features some cool solos on instruments like African finger piano and piccolo trumpet. The whole thing bounces along with a majestic approach that's very full and complicated – yet also tight and funky! Lots of nice groovy tunes – and titles include "Sun Goddess", "Symphonic Soul", "Soul Saga", "African Symphony", "Slow Hot Wind", and "Satin Soul". LP, Vinyl record album

Kama Sutra, 1967. Very Good ... $8.99
Great work by one of the most compelling groups in the Kama Sutra bubble gum stable! Sopwith Camel always seemed a bit headier than their contemporaries – part Spanky & Our Gang type pop, part long-haired hipster rock – handled with some introspective touches that almost feel like Leonard Cohen at times. This early album's hard to describe, but it's a lost pop gem – and one of those west coast late 60s sides that make you realize that there was a heck of a lot of great music that got lost in the shuffle of the summer of love! Titles include "Walk In The Park", "Postcard From Jamaica", "Cellophane Woman", "Maybe In A Dream", "Saga Of The Low Down Let Down", "Hello Hello", and "Frantic Desolation". LP, Vinyl record album

On-U Sound/Lantern (Italy), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
A legendary compilation – and one that marked the start of the huge On-U Sound legacy to follow throughout the 90s! The work here is maybe even more messed-up than some of the later productions by Adrian Sherwood – as there's maybe a bit more post-punk influence in the blend, alongside plenty of that Jamaican groove that was so important to both Sherwood and the UK scene at the time, already getting manipulated here in the way that made the producer and label such an important aesthetic force in years to come! Titles include "Bed Bound Saga" by Machine Gun Hogg & Co, "Woodpecker Sound" by Jah Woosh, "Quit The Body" by The Chicken Granny, "Dreams Are Better" by London Underground, "Demonic Forces" by Alan Pellay, "Afghani Dub" by The Mothmen, "The Dice" by Judy Nylon, "Yipee I Aah" by New Age Steppers, "Quante Jubila" by Prince Far I & Creation Rebel, and "Asian Rebel" by Suns Of Arqua. ✨✧ Dusko GoykovichPortrait/Swinging Macedonia/Brandenburg Concert (3CD set) ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1966/2001/2013. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A trio of albums from one of our favorite trumpeters on the European scene! First up is Portrait – a set that stands as a tribute to trumpeter Dusko Goykovich's 70 years on this planet – and a record that features him in a variety of settings too! Other players include Ferdinand Povel on flute and tenor, Tony Lakatos on tenor, Steve Gut on trumpet, Isla Eckinger and Ray Drummond on basses, Abraham Burton on alto, and Kenny Barron and Tommy Flanagan on pianos – on titles that include "Recado Bossa Nova", "Balkan Blue", "Adriatica", "One For Klook", and "Inga". Next is Swinging Macedonia – a legendary German session from the 60s – and a record that really showcases the unusual criss-crossing of modes that was going on in the European scene at the time! There's a very strong MPS vibe here – as trumpeter Dusko Goykovich leads a swinging sextet that includes Nathan Davis on flute, soprano, and tenor – blowing some tremendously soulful reed lines – plus incredible rhythms from Mal Waldron on piano, Peter Trunk on bass, and Cees See on drums. The record's an attempt to bring traditional Macedonian rhythms into a jazz perspective – but with players like these, it swings in a way any Macedonian album never could – damn soulful, and with a great exotic vibe. Davis is especially great, and plays in a soaring modal vein that's similar to his work on his classic MPS sides, and on the records he cut in America in the early 70s. The album's a beautiful session that often get's overlooked because it blends it with the Enja catalog – but it's really more of a record that belongs in an MPS reissue series, and is a great lost groover that's waiting to be rediscovered by the Dusty Groove crowd. Titles include "Macedonia", "Old Fisherman's Daughter", "Jumbo Uganda", "Bem Basha", "Saga Se karame", and "The Nights Of Skopje". Brandenberg Concert features one of the greatest trumpeters on the European scene of the past few decades – heard here in a completely sublime setting! Dusko Goykovich has played in many styles and many ways, but hasn't ever done a date with full strings before – a long-overdue placement for his wonderful tone on trumpet – shimmering out front of a larger ensemble, in the manner of classic "with strings" dates by Dizzy Gillespie or Art Farmer! Altoist Peter King arranged the album – and titles are all originals by Dusko, some of which you might know from earlier records – reworked here beautifully for the new setting. King also solos on a handful of tracks too – a rich voice that provides a nice balance with Dusko's trumpet. Strings are never overdone, and the album's always got a nice swing from a core rhythm trio that features Renato Chicco on piano. Titles include "Good Old Days", "Handful O Soul", "Danca Comigo", "St Germain Des Pres", "Adriatica", "In My Dreams", and "I Miss You So". CD

The early roots of The Guess Who – served up here in a double-length collection of material that's overflowing with great cuts before their famous years on RCA! The group's sound is already pretty strongly formed here – thanks to vocals and piano from Burton Cummings, and guitar work from Randy Bachman – maybe in more familiar garage territory on a number of cuts, but definitely finding that special sort of approach by the middle of the set – especially once Cummings discovers the more soulful, expressive side of his vocals. The set's got 28 tracks in all – put together by Bachman himself – and titles include "Friends Of Mine", "Maple Fudge", "Of A Dropping Pin", "We're Coming To Dinner", "Sitar Saga", "Miss Felicity Grey", "There's No Getting Away From You", "Croyez Moi", and "Shadows Cross The Shadows". The really wonderful debut of Thin Lizzy – a set that features a slightly different sound than their big 70s classics, but which is also completely wonderful, and shows that the group was already on a very clear path! There's a bit more acoustic guitar here than in later years – as Phil Lynott plays the instrument, and Eric Bell adds in 12 string guitar – both elements in the music that really give the songs a subtle sense of beauty, even while they still rock out heavily with those amazing Lynott lead vocals, as well as his great work on bass! The power of the album comes through right away – clearly very different than so much of the scene at the time – and titles include the fantastic "Friendly Ranger At Clontarf Castle", plus "Honesty Is No Excuse", "Ray-Gun", "Look What The Wind Blew In", "Clifton Garage Hotel", "Saga Of The Ageing Orphan", and "Remembering (Part 1)". Steeplechase (Denmark), 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the hippest albums ever recorded by Sheila Jordan – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of her work! The album's a set of spare duets recorded in Oslo with bassist Arild Andersen – in a setting that recalls some of the initial experimental work she'd done with Roswell Rudd, but with an even more spacious sound overall – one that lets Jordan dominate the tunes strongly with an amazing command of rhythm and timing! The approach is never too self-indulgent, and Andersen's warm tones on bass round out the tunes with a subtle sense of soul. Tunes are a mix of old standards and a few hipper 70s numbers – and include "Song Of Joy", "The Saga Of Harrison Crabfeathers", "On Green Dolphin Street", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "The Lady", and "Better Than Anything". A really groovy set of work by The Rascals – one that gets past some of their other greatest hits collections on the market, to include not just all the weird and wonderful b-sides of their singles, but also some of their great later work for Columbia Records too! The music here is a fantastic evolution in sound – from the early garage soul of the Atlantic material issued under the name of The Young Rascals, to the trippier sounds as the group dropped the "young" from their name, and found an even more spacious, soaring sort of approach – one that only continued to get cooler as the 60s came to an end, and organist Felix Cavaliere took more charge of their sound in the studio. The earliest singles are presented in mono, the later ones in stereo – and the 2CD collection features 47 tracks in all – with titles that include "Slow Down", "Sueno", "Groovin (Spanish version)", "Rainy Day", "Of Course", "Baby I'm Blue", "Jungle Walk", "Hummin Song", "Brother Tree", "Saga Of New York", "Rainy Day", "I Believe", "If You Knew", "Away Away", "Almost Home", "Of Course", and all the hits you might expect! El-P's production is a the perfect balance of classic era inspired boombap and his totally distinctive, icy electric sound – and the breathless rhymes by both, but especially Killer Mike are powerful to say the least. Includes "Down" feat Joi Gilliam, "Talk To Me", "Legend Has It", "Call Ticketron", "Hey Kids" feat Danny Brown, "Stay Gold", "Thieves! (Screamed The Ghost)" feat Tunde Adebimpe, "2100" feat Boots, "Thursday In The Danger Room" (feat Kamasi Washington), "A Report To The Shareholders/Kill Your Masters". LP, Vinyl record album

One of our all-time favorites – with the classic part 2 of the "Cynus X1" saga – the mighty "Trees", and the post-rock jam "La Villa Strangiato". Buda (France), Late 70s/1980s/1990s/Early 2000s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An ambitious anthology of music from African films of many styles – featuring a variety of material that stretches as deep as the subject matter – covering films from 1975 to 2005! The sound quality is crisp and impeccable – and the stylistic breadth is quite wide! Many of the tracks feature the clapping and thumping percussion, and gorgeous vocals you'd expect, both solo and choral – but the far-reaching compositions and melodies really make this an interesting listen. Musicians involved include percussion/drummer Mokhtar Samba, Senegalese kora player Lamine Konte, eclectic Franco-Senegalese composer Patrice Gomis, author/composer/singer Francios N'Gwa and many more! 19 tracks in all: "Ouaga Saga" by Mokhtar Samba", "Bako" by Lamine Konte, "Oghendo" by Francois N'Gwa, "Donka" by Marc Herouet, "Maaya" by Amity Neria, "Sababu", Ray Lema, "Brakka, I Am Calling From Africa" by So Kalmery, "Arrivee A Cotonou" by Marianne Entat, "Voyages" by Loy Ehrlich, "Pet A Tetit" by Jean Odoutan and more! ✨✧ AssagaiAssagai ... LP
Vertigo/Cosmic Rock, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 26.99
An excellent bit of UK Afro-Funk – recorded at the beginning of the 70s by a group that included members of the legendary South African jazz combo The Blue Notes – Dudu Pukwana on reeds, Mongezi Feza on trumpet, and Louis Moholo on drums! The record's quite different than you'd guess from those players – thanks to some kickass help from the rest of the group – who really push things into a tripped-out version of Afro Funk – a bit in the mode of Demon Fuzz at the time – a group who also lent a member to this project! There's some great horn work on the record – with the kind of "out" soloing you might expect from the group, laid out over heavy drums and good bass-heavy funk – on titles that include "Hey Jude", "Irin Ajolaway", "Akasa", "Telephone Girl", "Beka", and "Cocoa". Jam Sounds/Heartbeat, 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An essential reissue of an essential roots album! A mid 70s landmark of harmony roots, the Abyssinians' Satta Massagana, aka Forward To Zion, is hard to beat for hardcore, spiritual roots delivered over hypnotically pulsing rhythms, and Heartbeat ups the ante by digging deep for some excellent and essential dubs and extended mixes, plus several sweet bonus numbers. Sly and Robbie, plus Horsemouth and Boo Richards, Micky Chung, Chinna Smith, Clive Hunt and Geoffrey Chung are among their erstwhile co-conspirators on this self produced gem. 14 tracks in all, including "Declaration Of Rights", "The Good Lord", "Forward Unto Zion", "Know Jah Today", "Abendigo", "Y Mas Gan", "Black Man's Strain", "Satta Massagana", "I & I", "African Race", "Leggo beast", "Peculiar Number", "Reason Time" and "There Is No End". ✨✧ Philippe SardeLe Choix Des Armes/Fort Saganne ... CD
Universal (France), Early 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Strong work by a composer who's becoming one of our favorite French soundtrack artists! Both of these scores are fairly dramatic – but they're handled in a way that has subtle little touches of intimacy, with solo bass instrumentation on Le Choix Des Armes by Ron Carter and Buster Williams, and solo cello on Fort Saganne by Xavier Gagnepain. The best score here is really Le Choix – as it's a dark set of tracks written for a 1981 crime thriller starring Yves Montand and Gerard Depardieu. The orchestra's led by Nat Peck, with direction by Peter Knight – and the overall quality of the tracks is right up there with some of Morricone's thriller work from the 70s. 22 tracks in all – with notes in English and French! Matthew HalsallWhen The World Was One ... LP
Gondwana (UK), 2014. New Copy 2LP ... $34.99 36.99
Incredible modal sounds from trumpeter Matthew Halsall – one of our favorite contemporary jazz artists, and one whose vision just gets bolder and bolder with each new record! This completely sublime set has Halsall working tightly with reedman Nat Birchall – a frequent musical partner whose own records bristle with the same sort of spiritual energy – given some slight additional flavors here with extra flute, harp, and koto – used alongside the more familiar piano, bass, and drums that have always grounded the pair's work together. All tunes are original, and have this vibe that's perfect for the post-Coltrane spiritual jazz generation – but delivered in a way that's quite fresh, too – and not just a simple rehash of early 70s Impulse Records modes. Every track's a gem – and titles include "Sagano Bamboo Forest", "Tribute To Alice Coltrane", "When The World Was One", "Falling Water", and "Kiyomizu Dera". LP, Vinyl record album

Michel MagneLe Monde Instrumental De Michel Magne – Jazz Et Musiques De Films 1955 to 1962 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CDs ... $20.99 34.99
French composer Michel Magne is perhaps best remembered for his soundtrack work of the 60s – but this well-done collection digs farther back, and brings together not only some earlier film score work from the postwar years, but also some extra cool instrumental projects too! Magne's always got a special sort of twist in his music – and he was maybe one of the first French arrangers to incorporate newer ideas in pop and rock to his music, at a level that opened the door for later artists like Jean Claude Vannier or Michel Colombier – and like contemporary Alan Goraguer, he's also got some strong backing in jazz as well! Those many streams of styles really come into play here – in a big 3CD package that features 88 tracks in all – including the soundtracks to the films Le Repos Du Guerrier, Le Pain Vivant, Detournement De Mineures, Le Pique Assiette, and Un Singe En Hiver – plus work from a Musique Pour Films album, the records Musique Tachist, Paris, and A L'Alhambra – and even a rare collaboration with author Francoise Sagan! Trojan, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Stunning soul from Ken Boothe – one of the singers who really helped bring a sense of soul to Jamaican music with classic material like this! Ken's got a unique voice that's not the usual style of reggae vocalists – a really distinct sense of phrasing that's both easygoing and deep at the same time – yet never in a way that's like American deep soul either. The approach is one that helped Boothe ride strongly from the rocksteady years into the soulful side of 70s reggae, and beyond into the roots generation too – sometimes transforming American soul tunes, but often delivering some mighty righteous originals that were some of his best material. This big set covers all the bases – and the 2LP version features 28 tracks in all, with titles that include "Lady With The Starlight", "Silver Words", "Everything I Own", "Is It Because I'm Black", "Freedom Street", "Say You", "Who Gets Your Love", "Your Feeling & Mine", "I'm Not For Sale", "Rasta Never Fails", "Satta Massagana", "Love Don't Love Nobody", "Freedom Day", "Let Go", and "That's The Way Nature Planned It". ✨✧ Charles Hilton BrownOwed To Myself ... CD
Schema (Italy), 1974. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A swirling blend of soul, funk, and jazzy grooves – and a super-rare album that we've never seen in the original! Supposedly, backing on the record is by the British Afro-Funk group Assagai – which sounds right to us, because there's a nice rolling conga groove on many of the tracks. Lead vocals are by Charles Hilton Brown, in a nicely raw soul style that reminds us a bit of Otis Redding, and a bit of Mike James Kirkland on some of his early 70s material. The record features vocal covers of a number of soul hits – like "Try A Little Tenderness", "Love Train", and "Ain't No Sunshine" – plus some originals that are even better, like the funky instrumental "GRF", and the tunes "Maddox" and "Tell Me Once Again". Nice and raw, and with a sound hip enough to match the record's cover! CD

Ronnie James Dio's final album fronting Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow – and one of the better albums from that 70s hard rock/proto metal behemoth! It's got 2 tracks per side, each with a shorter song and a more epic rocker – lumbering, catchy, and heavy rock that's a helluva lot of fun all these years later! Dio's at his 70s best here, too, before going all out with the sword-wielding macabre sagas, but the Rock God anthems were in full force with Rainbow. One of the first-ever Brazilian remix projects – pioneered back in the mid 90s by the Mr Bongo posse – already steeped in Brazilian grooves from years of great reissues and retail! For the set, the Bongo crew enlisted the aid of talents that include Faze Action, Ballistic Brothers, Fila Brazilian, and Boxsaga – all to remix 11 Batucada tracks performed by the group Arakatuba. The sound is a brilliant update of Brazilian percussion traditions, and shows the keen energy of the London scene to attempt to merge older styles into a new dancefloor groove. The lovely Marilia Medalha turns her talents to a host of songs penned by Vinicius De Moraes – all numbers done in collaboration with the singer, at a level that's quite different than some of the other Vinicius projects of the time! The poet produced the set, and arrangements are by Edu Lobo and Chiquinho De Moraes – who both bring in this warmly sophisticated style that really makes things interesting – charts handled with that special care that Edu always had for his best work – with a blend of fullness in the setting, but never in a way that overwhelms the vocals. Medalha's got this well-paced, sometimes spacious approach to the music that really opens up the tunes – and titles include "Mr Toquinho", "Se O Amor Pudesse", "Moinho D'Agua", "Algum Lugar", "Ausencia", "Sagarana", "Meu Tempo", and "Distante".
