Big MaybelleSaga Of The Good Life & Hard Times (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Rojac/Traffic, 1967. New Copy ... $7.99 16.98
A great set that may well be Big Maybelle's best record ever – really rare work that's quite different than her famous work of the 50s! The set was recorded in the Criteria studios in Miami – and it's got a cool southern soul sound that's part Bobby Blue Bland bluesy soul, and part Muscle Shoals funk – fused together wonderfully by arranger Eric Knight – who really has a great ear for giving Maybelle a wicked new groove! Maybelle's vocals are a bit deeper than usual – much more soul than the blues of a decade before – and tracks include "This Bitter Earth", "How It Lies", "Old Love Never Dies", "My Mother's Eyes", and "Love Careless Love". CD
(In a very cool Japanese-styled, LP-like cardboard sleeve cover!)

✨✧ Roger (Roger Troutman)Saga Continues ... LP
Warner, 1984. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Crisply popping grooves from Roger – a great solo record from the voice of Zapp! The Saga Continues finds Roger still rocking his trademark effects laden vocals and vamping guitar work into the middle of the decade – with even tighter syncopated percussion, funky keys, and sharp synth bursts – sailing in a killer groove throughout! Roger produced the record along with Larry Troutman – and they bring in Maceo Parker for a horn solo and Ohio Player Billy Beck for keyboards as well! Tracks include a vocoder funk reading of Wilson Pickett's "Midnight Hour", plus "In The Mix", "Play Your Guitar Brother Roger", "The Break Song", "I Keep Trying", "Bucket Of Blood", "T C Song", and "Girl Cut It Out". ✨✧ Charles TylerSaga Of The Outlaws ... CD
Nessa, 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous 70s album from Charles Tyler – one recorded with a rich, raw tone that's simply mindblowing! Tyler here has all of the deep soul we first came to love during his ESP years, but also a sound that's a bit more focused too – one that's extremely powerful, and boldly righteous – not exactly spiritual jazz, but also not loft jazz either. The sound is wonderful – Tyler's sharp-edged alto out front, in a group with trumpeter Earl Cross – a player who's a really great match in spirit and tone. Other group members include Steve Reid on drums, and bassist Ronnie Boykins and John Ore – players who each play in a different channel of the record! The set is billed as "a polyphonic sonic drama performed live by the Charles Tyler Ensemble" – which is a wonderful summation of the music. CD

Thelonious MonkLes Liaisons Dangereuses 1960 ... CD
Sam Records/Saga, 1959. Used 2 CDs ... $16.99
A rare and unused soundtrack recording by Thelonious Monk – and a set of music that would be a standout in his catalog, even if it wasn't planned for a film! You probably know the Art Blakey soundtrack for the movie – which was the used and released version – and you might even know the Duke Jordan recording, too – but this batch of material is equally wonderful, and features an unusual quintet that has Monk's piano alongside the twin tenors of both Charlie Rouse and Barney Wilen – the latter of whom was such a key part of the French scene that gave the world the film in the late 50s. Other group members include Sam Jones on bass and Art Taylor on drums – and most numbers are reworkings of other Monk compositions, but done especially for the film – with titles that include "Six In One", "Light Blue", "Bye & Bye", "Ba Lue Bolivar Ba Lues Are", "Pannonica", "Well You Needn't", and "Rhythm-A-Ning" – all presented here in differing versions and mixes. Great package – 2CDs, with a bonus 60 page color book with photos and essays! CD

Saga, Mid 30s/1940s/Early 50s. Used 3CD ... Just Sold Out!
A pretty incredible little box of Django – one of the best we've seen! It spans the years 1934-1953, so you get a very far-reaching picture of Reinhardt's guises, from the crisp Gypsie rags and blues, to the more swinging Hot Club recordings, to his lonely solo settings, and beyond. The 3 discs are broken up by era, with disc one covering 1934-40, disc two covering 1940-47, and disc three spaning 1947-53. Tracks include "Dinah", Blue Drag", "Sweet Sue", "St. Louis Blues", "Minor Swing", "Honeysuckle Rose", "Black And White", "Swing 39", "I'll See You In My Dreams", "Les Yeux Noir", "Blues Claire", "Echoes De France", "Topsy", "Bellville", "Ol' Man River", "Tears", "Tiger Rag" and tons of others. 58 tracks in the set – plus a really incredible, thick glossy booklet with extensive notes and info in both French & English – and one of the nicest batches of photos we've ever seen in a Django Reinhardt package! The amazing Lizzy Mercier Descloux adds one more global feather to her cap with this sweet little album – a set recorded in Rio, with help from a host of Brazilian musicians – and some special guest work from legendary trumpeter Chet Baker too! The record warms up the sound a bit from some of Lizzy's earlier records – still quite creative in both the songwriting and overall approach, but almost given a warmer spin alongside instrumentation that includes accordion from Sivuca, cavaquinho from Alceu Maia, acoustic guitar from Neco, and percussion from Djalma Correa! Other instrumentation still includes some of the keyboards and rhythm lines you'd know from Lizzy's other Ze Record releases – and titles include "Simply Beautiful", "Fog Horn Blues", "My Funny Valentine", "One For The Soul", "A World Is A Wah", and "Scala Saga Samba". Bob Dylan/The BandBasement Tapes (remastered edition) ... CD
Columbia, Late 60s/1975. Used 2 CDs ... $12.99
Dylan & The Band's legendary Basement Tapes – those amazing late 60s Woodstock recordings – and an album that was a classic long before it was officially released in the mid 70s! Bootleg after bootleg of some these recordings might have sold enough copies on the grey market in the early 70s to go platinum back in the day, so there's little wonder that Columbia would finally get some kind of official release out there – and it lives up to the legend! Dylan's conversational, seemingly spontaneous lyricism stretches over a good portion of it, with some much more soulful numbers, too – and those are all the more effective with The Band's incredible instrumentation, backing and occasional lead vocals. Includes "Odds And Ends", "Million Dollar Bash", "Tears Of Rage", "Tiny Montgomery", "Nothing Was Delivered", "Too Much Of Nothing", "Clothes Line Saga", "You Ain't Goin Nowhere", "Open The Door, Homer", "This Wheel's On Fire, "Crash On the Levee (Down In The Flood)", "Long Distance Operator". Giles, Giles, & FrippCheerful Insanity Of Giles, Giles, & Fripp (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Deram/Universal (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $13.99
Important work from Robert Fripp and the brothers Peter & Michael Giles – recorded a year before the first King Crimson album with a mad sound that's somewhere in between Bowie's early Deram recordings, and some of the Syd Barrett work with Pink Floyd! Although Fripp's guitar figures nicely in the sound of the group, the overall style is much more whimsical and heavily arranged than any of his later work – done with a playful blend of strings and piano, and also some surprising jazz undercurrents from time to time. There's none of the overblown modes of the early King Crimson sound – and if anything, the record's a charmingly understated set that's ripe for rediscovery by ears trained on newly revived strands of 60s music! Titles include "The Sun Is Shining", "One In A Million", "Saga Of Rodney Toady", "North Meadow", "Call Tomorrow", "Digging My Lawn", "Erudite Eyes", and "The Crukster". CD features 6 bonus tracks – including "She Is Loaded", "Under The Sky", "Newly Weds (single)", and "One In A Million (mono)". CD

Dusko Goykovich with Nathan Davis & Mal WaldronSwinging Macedonia ... LP
Enja/Be! (Germany), 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A legendary German session from the 60s – and a record that really showcases the unusual criss-crossing of modes that was going on in the European scene at the time! There's a very strong MPS vibe here – as trumpeter Dusko Goykovich leads a swinging sextet that includes Nathan Davis on flute, soprano, and tenor – blowing some tremendously soulful reed lines – plus incredible rhythms from Mal Waldron on piano, Peter Trunk on bass, and Cees See on drums. The record's an attempt to bring traditional Macedonian rhythms into a jazz perspective – but with players like these, it swings in a way any Macedonian album never could – damn soulful, and with a great exotic vibe. Davis is especially great, and plays in a soaring modal vein that's similar to his work on his classic MPS sides, and on the records he cut in America in the early 70s. The album's a beautiful session that often get's overlooked because it blends it with the Enja catalog – but it's really more of a record that belongs in an MPS reissue series, and is a great lost groover that's waiting to be rediscovered by the Dusty Groove crowd. Titles include "Macedonia", "Old Fisherman's Daughter", "Jumbo Uganda", "Bem Basha", "Saga Se karame", and "The Nights Of Skopje". LP, Vinyl record album

A&M, 1976. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Quincy Jones may be best remembered for his funky soundtrack work of the 70s – but the man can also hit a deeper, more serious vein when he wants – as he does on this ambitious album-length project inspired by the landmark Roots mini-series! The music isn't a straight soundtrack from the program, but instead evokes the longer narrative over the passage of its different selections – working as its own "saga of an American family", as it moves from African roots, through years of oppression, to moments of pride and power – amidst larger orchestrations from Jones, with help from Letta Mbulu on some key vocals, and more help from Bill Summers, James Cleveland, and even Lou Gossett. Great work by one of the most compelling groups in the Kama Sutra bubble gum stable! Sopwith Camel always seemed a bit headier than their contemporaries – part Spanky & Our Gang type pop, part long-haired hipster rock – handled with some introspective touches that almost feel like Leonard Cohen at times. This early album's hard to describe, but it's a lost pop gem – and one of those west coast late 60s sides that make you realize that there was a heck of a lot of great music that got lost in the shuffle of the summer of love! John Surman & Jack DeJohnetteAmazing Adventure Of Simon Simon ... CD
ECM, 1981. Used ... $16.99
John Surman's a player who always shines brightly in any sort of a duet setting – as you'll easily hear in this early 80s session cut with drummer Jack DeJohnette! The work has a slightly composed, slightly improvised feel – with Surman on soprano, baritone sax, bass clarinet, and synth – and DeJohnette on his usual drums, plus congas and a bit of electric piano. Most numbers have a relatively loose structure, but still a strongly melodic pulse overall – and Surman's ability to bring new sounds, moods, and tones to a set like this is one of the key aspects that makes the record great! We've had some great trips on Africa Airways in recent years – and this sweet fourth set proves once again that the fun lies in the journey, not the destination! As before, the cuts here share a lot more with American funk than you might think – especially the tight late 70s style with lots of basslines at the bottom, and some warmly jazzy currents in the instrumentation – which often serve to provide a superb setting for the vocals over the top – sometimes just sing-song chorus bits, but merged perfectly with the grooves! Tracks here come from French labels like Fiesta and Sonodisc, and there's definitely some of that criss-crossing between West African and Parisian modes going on – on titles that include "Sun Explosion" by Manu Dibango, "Nassa Nassa" by Uta Bella, "Nimele Bolo" by Charly Kingson, "Africain" by Momo Joseph, "Biram" by Kemayo & K-System, "Soul Magabe" by Pierre Didy Tchakounte, "Funny Saga" by The Monsters, and "Tinini Yanana" by Jake Sollo. Mariana Aydar's really blowing our mind since the last time we heard her on record – stepping forth here with her deepest, most complex material ever – an album as rich in sounds and styles as some of our favorite Brazilian material from the 70s! There's this confidence to the presentation that's completely genre-transcendent – that feel of making new musical space we loved in the Tropicalia era, and the MPB generation of the 70s – a mode that few other Brazilian singers, especially female ones, can match this well these days. The record speaks volumes on its own – so much so that we'd be daft to try to pin it down with just a few words – but we can definitely say that once you hang on for the ride, Mariana got plenty of places to take you through the course of the set. An excellent "comeback" LP for Ernest Ranglin, though astute observers realize he never really went away in the first place! Ranglin was always able to move back and forth easily between the worlds of groovy jazz, playing alongside Monty Alexander on some of his finest 70s sides, and Jamaican studio work, serving guitar duties at Studio One, cutting some of the rhythms that would serve as the foundation for much of the Jamaican music throughout the years! This set finds him in fine form, rendering excellent jazzy versions of numerous classic rhythms with a crack band that includes old mates Monty Alexander and Roland Alphonso and funky drummer Idris Muhammad! 8 tracks in all: "Congo Man", "Surfin'", "King Tubby MeetsThe Rockers", "Satta Massagana", "54-46 (Was My Number)", "None Shall Escape The Judgement", "Ball Of Fire" and "Black Disciples" LP, Vinyl record album
