Big MaybelleSaga Of The Good Life & Hard Times (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Rojac/Traffic, 1967. New Copy ... $7.99 16.98
A great set that may well be Big Maybelle's best record ever – really rare work that's quite different than her famous work of the 50s! The set was recorded in the Criteria studios in Miami – and it's got a cool southern soul sound that's part Bobby Blue Bland bluesy soul, and part Muscle Shoals funk – fused together wonderfully by arranger Eric Knight – who really has a great ear for giving Maybelle a wicked new groove! Maybelle's vocals are a bit deeper than usual – much more soul than the blues of a decade before – and tracks include "This Bitter Earth", "How It Lies", "Old Love Never Dies", "My Mother's Eyes", and "Love Careless Love". CD
(In a very cool Japanese-styled, LP-like cardboard sleeve cover!)

RogerMany Facets Of Roger/Saga Continues/Unlimited (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Robinsongs (UK), Mid 80s. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
A trio of albums from Roger – with bonus tracks too! On the first album, there's Many Facets Of Roger – and they're all pretty darn funky! From this vantage point, all we can think of is that Roger Troutman must have had some sort of crystal ball to see into the hip hop sampling future – either that, or he was busy cooking up west coast gangster funk drones in some secret So Cal laboratory! Whatever the case, though, the record's a classic in the Troutman/Zapp catalog – and features a sparkling west coast take on electro – offered up with lots of popping basslines, snapping electric kickdrums, and a truckfull of vocoder! There's also some pretty nice guitar in the mix – especially on the good jazzy groover "Chunk Of Sugar", which sounds like it's from a completely different record. Other tracks include "Maxx Axe", "Do It Roger", "So Ruff, So Tuff", and "Blue". The Saga Continues finds Roger still rocking his trademark effects laden vocals and vamping guitar work into the middle of the decade – with even tighter syncopated percussion, funky keys, and sharp synth bursts – sailing in a killer groove throughout! Roger produced the record along with Larry Troutman – and they bring in Maceo Parker for a horn solo and Ohio Player Billy Beck for keyboards as well! Tracks include a vocoder funk reading of Wilson Pickett's "Midnight Hour", plus "In The Mix", "Play Your Guitar Brother Roger", "The Break Song", "I Keep Trying", "Bucket Of Blood", "T C Song", and "Girl Cut It Out". Unlimited has Roger going for a sound that's maybe even more electro than some of his earlier solo work, at a level that really seems to be pushing the Zapp sound further for the 80s! The style is funky, but touched with lots of elements that have wended their way from indie hip hop up to mainstream soul – all at a level that later acts might fuse together with a bit more warmth, but which still has the starker feel of electro soul in Troutman's hands. Titles include "Thrill Seekers", "I Want To Be You Man", "I Really Want to Be You Man", "Night & Day", and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag". Bonus tracks include "Please Come Home For Christmas", "Bedisguitarist-A-Rown", and 7" mixes of "Heard It Through The Grapevine (part 1)", "Do It Roger", "In The Mix", "I Want To Be Your Man", and "Midnight Hour (part 1)". ✨✧ Charles TylerSaga Of The Outlaws ... CD
Nessa, 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous 70s album from Charles Tyler – one recorded with a rich, raw tone that's simply mindblowing! Tyler here has all of the deep soul we first came to love during his ESP years, but also a sound that's a bit more focused too – one that's extremely powerful, and boldly righteous – not exactly spiritual jazz, but also not loft jazz either. The sound is wonderful – Tyler's sharp-edged alto out front, in a group with trumpeter Earl Cross – a player who's a really great match in spirit and tone. Other group members include Steve Reid on drums, and bassist Ronnie Boykins and John Ore – players who each play in a different channel of the record! The set is billed as "a polyphonic sonic drama performed live by the Charles Tyler Ensemble" – which is a wonderful summation of the music. CD

✨✧ Thelonious MonkLes Liaisons Dangereuses 1960 ... CD
Sam Records/Saga, 1959. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 19.99
A rare and unused soundtrack recording by Thelonious Monk – and a set of music that would be a standout in his catalog, even if it wasn't planned for a film! You probably know the Art Blakey soundtrack for the movie – which was the used and released version – and you might even know the Duke Jordan recording, too – but this batch of material is equally wonderful, and features an unusual quintet that has Monk's piano alongside the twin tenors of both Charlie Rouse and Barney Wilen – the latter of whom was such a key part of the French scene that gave the world the film in the late 50s. Other group members include Sam Jones on bass and Art Taylor on drums – and most numbers are reworkings of other Monk compositions, but done especially for the film – with titles that include "Six In One", "Light Blue", "Bye & Bye", "Ba Lue Bolivar Ba Lues Are", "Pannonica", "Well You Needn't", and "Rhythm-A-Ning" – all presented here in differing versions and mixes. Great package – 2CDs, with a bonus 60 page color book with photos and essays! CD

BandIslands (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol (Japan), 1977. Used ... $14.99
A truly underappreciated later album from The Band, made after they decided to hang it up as a touring act – one that holds up SO much better than it's given credit for, by thier die hard fans and even The Band itself – but it works for us! The Band's most legendary first couple of records were the product of a longtime road tested group of deeply invested craftsmen, working together in a beautifully intuitive way. By this point, they are well known to have been looking for an exit strategy – and while Islands is a strong batch of songs, masterfully played and soulfully sung – it's genuine charms get lost in the lore. It's a breezier, easier going affair than their more rawly passionate records, but it's an overlooked gem. Includes "Right As Rain", "Street Walker", "Ain't That A Lot Of Love", "Islands", "The Saga Of Pepote Rouge", "Knockin' Lost John", "Living In A Dream" and their sweet little take on "Georgia On My Mind", with Richard Manuel on lead vocals for a change, given this beauty of a pop standard a gruff edge that works wonderfully well. Beach BoysCarl & the Passions – So Tough/Holland ... CD
Brother/Capitol, 1972/1973. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
2 Beach Boys albums on 2CDs – plus the bonus ep of material from Holland. The Carl & The Passions album was supposed to be a back to basics rocker, but it's a bit weak from this vantage point – although has some of those nice little later numbers that we always seem to overlook when shuffling through BB albums too quickly. Holland is a much more impressive effort – as it kicks off with the sublime "Sail On Sailor", proof that the group were ready to forge a whole new sound of 70s pop, plus a nice mix of tight pop songs and looser Smile-like tracks. Titles include "The Trader", "Funky Pretty", "Only With You", and the "California Saga". The CD also includes "Mount Vernon & Fairway" – a "fairy tale" that was included with the original LP as a bonus ep. The work's interesting – especially in that it shows that the group could still be pretty trippy and experimental – but gosh, we really have a hard time getting through it! CD

The amazing Lizzy Mercier Descloux adds one more global feather to her cap with this sweet little album – a set recorded in Rio, with help from a host of Brazilian musicians – and some special guest work from legendary trumpeter Chet Baker too! The record warms up the sound a bit from some of Lizzy's earlier records – still quite creative in both the songwriting and overall approach, but almost given a warmer spin alongside instrumentation that includes accordion from Sivuca, cavaquinho from Alceu Maia, acoustic guitar from Neco, and percussion from Djalma Correa! Other instrumentation still includes some of the keyboards and rhythm lines you'd know from Lizzy's other Ze Record releases – and titles include "Simply Beautiful", "Fog Horn Blues", "My Funny Valentine", "One For The Soul", "A World Is A Wah", and "Scala Saga Samba". CD features the bonus tracks "Bravado" and "Let's Get It On". CD

Bob Dylan/The BandBasement Tapes ... LP
Columbia, Late 60s/1975. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $99.99
Dylan & The Band's legendary Basement Tapes – those amazing late 60s Woodstock recordings – and an album that was a classic long before it was officially released in the mid 70s! Bootleg after bootleg of some these recordings might have sold enough copies on the grey market in the early 70s to go platinum back in the day, so there's little wonder that Columbia would finally get some kind of official release out there – and it lives up to the legend! Dylan's conversational, seemingly spontaneous lyricism stretches over a good portion of it, with some much more soulful numbers, too – and those are all the more effective with The Band's incredible instrumentation, backing and occasional lead vocals. Includes "Odds And Ends", "Million Dollar Bash", "Tears Of Rage", "Tiny Montgomery", "Nothing Was Delivered", "Too Much Of Nothing", "Clothes Line Saga", "You Ain't Goin Nowhere", "Open The Door, Homer", "This Wheel's On Fire, "Crash On the Levee (Down In The Flood)", "Long Distance Operator". Esquire/Solid (Japan), 1953. Used ... $24.99
Fantastic sounds from Kenny Graham – maybe the only musician on the London scene of the postwar years who could take on Latin music, and make it sound as sharp as work from the other side of the Atlantic! Graham's working here with his amazing Afro-Cubists group – an ensemble filled with the best modern players British jazz had to offer at the time – with tenor work from Graham, Derek Humble, and Peter King – plus Phil Seamen on drums, Joe Hunter on trumpet, and Roy Plummer on guitar! The arrangements are wonderful – heavy on percussion, but equally weighted to the vivid work on horns – and titles include "Jump For Joe", "Afro Kadabra", "Bongo Chant", "Saga Boy", "Dance Of The Zombies", "Wha Huppin Sah", "Tempo Medio Lento", and "Hatian Ritual". Sheila Jordan & Arild AndersenSheila ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1977. Used ... $9.99
One of the hippest albums ever recorded by Sheila Jordan – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of her work! The album's a set of spare duets recorded in Oslo with bassist Arild Andersen – in a setting that recalls some of the initial experimental work she'd done with Roswell Rudd, but with an even more spacious sound overall – one that lets Jordan dominate the tunes strongly with an amazing command of rhythm and timing! The approach is never too self-indulgent, and Andersen's warm tones on bass round out the tunes with a subtle sense of soul. Tunes are a mix of old standards and a few hipper 70s numbers – and include "Song Of Joy", "The Saga Of Harrison Crabfeathers", "On Green Dolphin Street", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "The Lady", and "Better Than Anything". MSB stands for Medical Sugar Bank – maybe an odd name for a group, but one that you'll quickly forget about, once you slide into the sound of this stellar fusion set from keyboardist Masahiko Satoh! Satoh plays a lot of great Fender Rhodes on the album, and a bit of acoustic piano too – and the lineup here is all Japanese, but with a soulful vibe that reminds us of some of the best American albums of this type from the time – never too uptight or commercial as fusion would be a few years later – but also not as noodly or jamming as some rock fusion either. The whole thing's very much right on the money – and Masahiko's got great help from Yasuaki Shimizu on soprano and tenor sax – on titles that include "Fly May Fly", "Monadic Dance", "Overhang Blues", "Ridin Out", and "Saga Unknown". ECM (Germany), 1981. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
John Surman's a player who always shines brightly in any sort of a duet setting – as you'll easily hear in this early 80s session cut with drummer Jack DeJohnette! The work has a slightly composed, slightly improvised feel – with Surman on soprano, baritone sax, bass clarinet, and synth – and DeJohnette on his usual drums, plus congas and a bit of electric piano. Most numbers have a relatively loose structure, but still a strongly melodic pulse overall – and Surman's ability to bring new sounds, moods, and tones to a set like this is one of the key aspects that makes the record great! Titles include "The Buccaneers", "Kentish Hunting", "The Pilgrim's Way", "Nestor's Saga", and "A Fitting Epitaph". CD

Monica ZetterlundChicken Feathers ... CD
EMI (Sweden), 1972. Used ... $19.99
One of the best records ever by this amazing Swedish singer – a really unique record that's filled with freshly-written tunes, including some great vocal numbers by pianist Steve Kuhn – who's also a key part of the session! The sound is wonderful – vocal jazz, but a lot more too – this fresh new style for the 70s, with inventive twists in the lyrics, amazing phrasing by Monica, and a whole new conception of the music that was the start of a great turn for the style – even if it was hardly ever realized this perfectly again! Kuhn wrote most of the tunes himself, and Bengt Hallberg wrote some of the others – and also handled piano and arrangements for the record – with a group that also include Lennart Aberg on tenor and Arne Domnerus on alto. Every track is a gem – really wonderful stuff throughout – and most have a sweet modal groove we totally love! Titles include "Chicken Feathers", "The Thoughts Of A Gentleman", "The Baby", "Raindrops Raindrops", "Silver", "Pearlie's Swine", and "The Saga Of Harrison Crabfeathers". CD

✨✧ Dusko Goykovich with Nathan Davis & Mal WaldronSwinging Macedonia ... LP
Enja/Be! (Germany), 1966. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A legendary German session from the 60s – and a record that really showcases the unusual criss-crossing of modes that was going on in the European scene at the time! There's a very strong MPS vibe here – as trumpeter Dusko Goykovich leads a swinging sextet that includes Nathan Davis on flute, soprano, and tenor – blowing some tremendously soulful reed lines – plus incredible rhythms from Mal Waldron on piano, Peter Trunk on bass, and Cees See on drums. The record's an attempt to bring traditional Macedonian rhythms into a jazz perspective – but with players like these, it swings in a way any Macedonian album never could – damn soulful, and with a great exotic vibe. Davis is especially great, and plays in a soaring modal vein that's similar to his work on his classic MPS sides, and on the records he cut in America in the early 70s. The album's a beautiful session that often get's overlooked because it blends it with the Enja catalog – but it's really more of a record that belongs in an MPS reissue series, and is a great lost groover that's waiting to be rediscovered by the Dusty Groove crowd. Titles include "Macedonia", "Old Fisherman's Daughter", "Jumbo Uganda", "Bem Basha", "Saga Se karame", and "The Nights Of Skopje". LP, Vinyl record album

Africa Seven (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We've had some great trips on Africa Airways in recent years – and this sweet fourth set proves once again that the fun lies in the journey, not the destination! As before, the cuts here share a lot more with American funk than you might think – especially the tight late 70s style with lots of basslines at the bottom, and some warmly jazzy currents in the instrumentation – which often serve to provide a superb setting for the vocals over the top – sometimes just sing-song chorus bits, but merged perfectly with the grooves! Tracks here come from French labels like Fiesta and Sonodisc, and there's definitely some of that criss-crossing between West African and Parisian modes going on – on titles that include "Sun Explosion" by Manu Dibango, "Nassa Nassa" by Uta Bella, "Nimele Bolo" by Charly Kingson, "Africain" by Momo Joseph, "Biram" by Kemayo & K-System, "Soul Magabe" by Pierre Didy Tchakounte, "Funny Saga" by The Monsters, and "Tinini Yanana" by Jake Sollo. Insanely fantastic! Ananda Shankar was one of the hippest sitar players of the 60s – an artist who was not only steeped in the strongest traditions of Indian music heard in other more mainstream players, but one who also had a keen ear for modder and funkier grooves of the time! This rare American set by Ananda is one of his greatest ever – a brilliant mix of funky backings and tripped out sitar work – done in a way that blends together soul, funk, and rock – all given a particularly cool Indian twist. The vibe is very much in the best funky Bollywood style – but was actually done years before most Bollywood funk – and the set includes great covers of "Jumpin Jack Flash" and "Light My Fire", plus great original tracks like "Sagar (The Ocean)", "Snow Flower", "Dance Indra", and "Metamorphosis". Contemporary grooves, but all pretty darn funky – thanks to an excellent track selection by Tobias Kirmayer – the same guy who brought us the excellents Movements collections! A few of the titles here are of older vintage, but most are pulled from the same deep funk underground that Kirmayer services with his Tramp Records label – groups steeped in the styles of the 60s and 70s underground, but who serve up new work that's filled with plenty of funky roots! Despite the wide range of styles promised in the title, most of the titles here are on the grittier side of the spectrum – which is a good thing for us – and even the few tracks that are a bit more programmed still work with plenty of soulful and jazzy elements to keep things real throughout.
