Sabrina MalheirosNew Morning (deluxe edition) ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2008. Used ... $12.99
A nicely changed-up version of this sweet Brazilian-tinged set! Sabrina Malheiros just keeps on getting better and better – and she really sparkles wonderfully here in a set of fully soulful backings! The album's put together by Daniel Maunick, aka Venom, and son of Bluey from Incognito – and there's a bit of an Incognito sensibility to the whole thing – a warmly soulful feel, touched with lots of jazzy instrumentation and a deeply classic sensibility – all of which makes for a wonderful setting for Sabrina's Portuguese vocals! Arthur Verocai helped on arrangements, and brings in some beautifully soaring strings – really helping to push the sound past the standard Far Out approach – and the whole thing's one of the most compelling albums we've heard from the label in recent years. This new version features rare singles and remixes – and titles include "Brisa Mar (Nicola Conte re-work)", "Connexao", "Ginga De Amor (unreleased)", "New Morning (Nicola Conte re-work)", "Eira Nem Beira (IG Culture re-work)", "Connexao (Paradiso rework)", "Essa Cancao", "Nova Estacao", "Sintonia (inst)", "Brisa Mar (inst)", and "Alem Do Sol". Alex Malheiros & Banda Utopia with Sabrina MalheirWave ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2009. Used ... $9.99
Beautiful grooves from Alex Malheiros – best known for his bass work in Azymuth, but stepping out here in a warm and wonderful set of his own! The groove here really takes us back to the sunny, soulful fusion we first loved when Azymuth hit the scene in the 70s – and Malheiros' guidance of the groove is really felt strongly in the album's warm-rolling basslines – a beautiful complement to a lineup that also includes Fender Rhodes, tenor, soprano sax, flute, trumpet, and trombone – plus a bit of occasional vocals from Sabrina Malheiros! Production is wonderful – handled by Daniel Maunick with some of the warmth of his Incognito work – and IG Culture comes in at the end to remix four of the album's tracks – almost creating a mini-modern suite to complement to the core 70s vibe of the record. Titles include "The Wave", "Corpo", "Copa A Noite", "Solar", "Sem Pressa", "Baixo Partido", "Serenity", "Uno Esta", and "4 Eyed Viper" – plus remixes of "The Wave" and "Uno Esta", the latter of which is a version of the Bobbi Humphrey classic! ✨✧ Alex MalheirosTempos Futuros ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic futuristic fusion from Alex Malheiros – best known as the bassist in Azymuth, but equally great here on his own – and in a completely different sort of way! The set's got heavy contributions from keyboardist Daniel Maunick, of Incognito fame – but the record's definitely got that well-crafted blend of jazz funk and Brazilian rhythms you'd know from Alex's legacy, but maybe tuned a bit more towards a 21st Century sort of groove – the right London touches in all the right places, in the best tradition of the Far Out label! Sabrina Malheiros sings on a few cuts, but most numbers are instrumental – and titles include "Retrato", "The Razor's Edge", "Telegramas Para Arp", "O Temporal", "Kuarup", "Alto Verao", and "Requiem For A Storm". ✨✧ VariousSoul Lounge Volume 12 – 40 Soulful Grooves (3CD box set) ... CD
Dome/Soul Lounge (UK), 2015. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest values in contemporary soul music – and a series we can still highly recommend even after the course of eleven previous volumes! The 3CD package is overflowing with great tracks far from the mainstream of soul – the kind of current, underground tracks that you'll hear from only a select few on both sides of the Atlantic – with an especially strong focus on UK soul artists here, given that the Dome Records label puts out some of the best of the London scene! There's plenty here to love – including a number of tracks that haven't been on CD before – and titles include "Sleepwalkers (Opolopo rmx)" by Jarrod Lawson, "Lowdown (Ski Oakenfull rmx)" by Incognito with Mario Biondi & Chaka Khan, "People (DJ Spen & Gary Hudgkins rmx)" by Shaun Escoffery, "Just For One Day" by Imaani, "Music & Its Magical Way" by Jarrod Lawson, "Soul Town (Nigel Lowis rmx)" by Ola Onabule, "Deja Vu" by Angela Johnson, "Bridge Over Troubled Water (acoustic)" by Shaun Escoffery, "Believe Me" by Anthony David, "Ever After (Jiva rmx)" by Seek, "Touch My Body" by Cooly's Hot Box, "Brighter Tomorrow" by Diplomats Of Soul, "Major Bossa" by Khari Cabral Simmons with Sabrina Malheiros, "Change" by Full Flava with Joy Rose, and "Every Time I Turn Around" by Makeda. 40 tracks in all!
