✨✧ Chuck Brown & The Soul SearchersFunk Express ... LP
Source, 1980. Very Good ... $16.99
Post-We The People, post-"Ashley's Roachclip", but pre-Go Go, very much in the vein of the great Bustin' Loose album. This LP has Chuck and the Soul Searchers produced by Wayne Henderson, with the same sort of jazzy funk style that he was doing with a lot of mid 70s bands at Fantasy records. The LP's got a lot of mid-tempo funk tracks with a rolling groove, including "Sticks & Stones", "Come On & Boogie", "In The Pocket", and more. And of course, Henderson made them record his classic "Keep That Same Old Feeling", as he made all groups do at this time! LP, Vinyl record album

James Brown Soul TrainHonky Tonk (parts 1 & 2) ... 7-inch
Polydor, 1972. Very Good ... $2.99
An old track – redone as a funky 70s killer from James Brown! The track starts out in a JBs party mode – with some dialogue before the band starts playing, then hitting a "Funky Good Time" groove. Over the top, you'll get some hard raw guitar soloing – very much in the classic mode from the Bill Doggett original – and the "part 2" features some great sax work, probably from Maceo! Originally issued only on single, before appearing on a greatest hits LP. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Newmiss, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Sublime stuff! "I Don't Know" is a great deep soul harmony cut – rolling into a midtempo groove from the intro like a rare Stax gem, with some great guitar and organ riffing along with the vocals, which are sung in a mode that's raspy and sweet at the same time! "Look What You Done" is pretty nice too – a bit more driving, but with a really nice harmony sound! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Everlast, Early 60s. Very Good- ... $0.99
A thumping bit of funky – two sides from Les Cooper and his Soul Rockers combo, both produced by Bobby Robinson! There's a feel here that's a lot like Bobby's raw R&B instrumental sides of the early 60s – lots of heavy bass, muddy piano, slurry drums – and a honking tenor sax cutting right out front! "Dig Yourself" actually has a bit of a vocal – a nice little hipster, almost beat group kind of approach! 7-inch, Vinyl record

De La SoulGrind Date (with bonus instrumentals) ... LP
Sanctuary/BMG, 2004. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
The first post-Tommy Boy De La Soul album – and it's a winner! We've been on board with De La throughout their long career – anyone with open ears must know that even their spottiest records (and this is NOT one of those) feature at least a handful of treasure tracks. Two songs into Grinda Date you'll find the stellar "Verbal Clap", one of J Dilla's finest blueprint era inspired productions ever, with precise on beat rhymes by De La. Other highlights include "He Comes" with Ghostface, a soulful track that would sound just as great on Ghost's Supreme Clientele. At the time it came out, this was De La's best album since Stakes Is High, we might actually like this one just as much. Featuring production by Dave West, J Dilla, Madlib and 9th Wonder – plus guest appearances by Yummy, Ghostface, Carl Thomas, MF Doom, Common and others. Other tracks include "The Future", "Much More" feat Yummy, "The Grind Date", "Shopping Bags", "Days Of Our Lives" with Common, "Come On Down", "Rock Co. Kane Flow" featuring MF Doom and more. A hard-hitting romper from trumpeter Jukka Eskola – a tune that has the trumpeter working with the well-named Soul Trio – in a groove that feels like some lost jukebox jazz single from the 60s, with the trumpet popping nicely alongside a soaring Hammond! "Martha's New Moment" begins with a great drumbreak, the rolls into more great organ – all very 60s overall, and capped with a cool compressed solo from Jukka! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Jukka Eskola Soul TrioSteamy ... CD
Timmion (Finland), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
An excellent group, and one with a really great concept – a fresh take on a format that was big in the 60s soul jazz scene, but spun out in a very unique way – both in terms of instrumentation, and in terms of the groove! Trumpeter Jukka Eskola heads the trio, which also features Hammond from Mikko Heleva and drums from Toppo Makynen – a mode that was more famously used in tenor/organ combos, like the match of Don Patterson and Sonny Stitt on Prestige Records – but which has never been found in this format before! The trumpet turns out to be a great sound in the frontline, and is given some changed-up rhythms here to work with – not straight soul jazz or funk, and instead a mixture of complicated elements that move the tunes throughout a great range of grooves and colors – really showing all the wonderful sounds that Jukka's been capable of giving us over the years. Titles include "Stick Of A Branch", "Jongo Street", "Tiny B", "Old Stories", "Smash", "Five On Three", and "Steamy". CD

Maryann Farra & Satin SoulNever Gonna Leave You (with bonus track) ... CD
Brunswick/Solid (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $13.99
A 70s indie club classic – and the only album we've ever seen from Maryann Farra & Satin Soul! The group have a sound that's equal parts Brunswick Chicago soul and New York early disco groove – a combination that's brought out even more by the production talents of disco maestro Tony Valor and Chi-soul genius Eugene Record! The tunes groove along in a really rich style of arrangement – often using sweeping strings over tighter rhythms – sometimes hitting the loping midtempo groove you'd expect from Brunswick records at the time, yet also going for some of the faster, freer rhythms that were cropping up on the east coast indies of the time. Some tracks have a tight dancefloor feel – like "Never Gonna Leave You", "Do Those Little Things", and "Just A Little Timing" – while others have a beautiful soul groove – like "You Got To Be The One" and "Living In The Footsteps of Another Girl" – which both have a sound that feels like it was lifted from a lost Barbara Acklin or Chi-Lites album! The set also includes a female soul remake of "Stoned Out Of My Mind" that's almost worth the price of the record alone! CD also features a bonus cut – the single version of "Never Gonna Leave You". An early classic solo jam from Fat Jon – one of our favorite underground hip hop beat wizards in the immediate post millennium – and a more than ample effort that still sounds great today! Combining his Dyslexic and Stasis EPs, it features a trademark batch Fat Jon's chilled out hip hop excursions into the realm of jazzy tone science. The beats here are fairly straight forward and snap nicely to keep it in head nodding territory, but his signature atmospheric production style is still floating nicely over the filtered basslines and crisp drum loops. Includes "Where?", "Feel The Void", "Visual Music", "For Stress", 'Wet Secrets", "Automated Life Machines" and "Surrection". 2019 version includes a couple extra tracks: "Trust You" and "Rain Dance Instrumental". Al Hudson & The Soul PartnersHappy Feet ... LP
MCA, 1979. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Joyous, bouncy sounds from the legendary Al Hudson – a sweet little set with his Soul Partners group, done in a mode that's right up there with the best music of his One Way combo! The grooves are uptempo, yet are much more rooted in ensemble funk than some of the disco of Al's contemporaries – and if anything, the album really shows a great evolution from the funk bands of the previous generation to a newer, more sophisticated style overall. Hudson's work at the helm is wonderful – and helps steer the group towards some nice mellow moments too – with arrangements from Kevin McCord, Rudy Robinson, and Dave Roberson. Alicia Myers serves up some great early vocals with the group – and titles include "I Don't Want You To Leave Me", "Another Love Song", "You Can Do It", "In The Basement", "Call Me", and "Rock". Al Hudson & The Soul PartnersSpreading Love/Happy Feet ... CD
ABC/Expansion (UK), 1978/1979. New Copy ... $16.99
A pair of ABC Records gems from Al Hudson & The Soul Partners – back to back on a single CD! Spreading Love is excellent early work from Al Hudson – a soulful talent who stood his own in the late 70s, forging an up-tempo funk sound that lived long past disco, and which was sort of a platform for groups of the 80s to build a new dancefloor sound. Hudson relied heavily on bass-y funk to hit his groove, but he also gave strong focus to the good singers who worked with his groups – adding in good ballads that act as a showcase to members like bassist Kevin McCord, who sings some great vocals on this set. The album kicks off with the up-tempo groover "Spread Love", an anthemic dancefloor tune that almost points the way towards soulful house, and it's got some other nice cuts, like the ballads "Lost Inside Of You" and "Love Me Forever", plus the funky numbers "How Do You Do", and "Dance, Get Down". Happy Feet is joyous, bouncy sounds from the legendary Al Hudson – a sweet little set with his Soul Partners group, done in a mode that's right up there with the best music of his One Way combo! Funky fusion from 70s Japan – a really great set that's heavy both on Fender Rhodes, and on a range of choppy reed lines on tenor, soprano sax, and flute! The set's got a warm glow that's perfect for the CTI generation – with an equally apt sense of space, one that keeps the record from veering into any overdone fusion cliches, and which instead helps the group stay in just the right territory to bring out all the best soul in their music. There's a funky feel on most cuts, but even the mellow numbers have a hell of a lot of soul too – thanks partly to the keyboards, and even more to a brilliant execution of the whole set. Jiro Inagaki plays some heavy tenor and soprano sax on the record – working with a combo that includes electric guitar, electric bass, and organ – plus a trumpet joining Jiro in the frontline! The rhythms are tight, hard, and very funky at times – drenched in soul, but also filtered through a bit of a psychedelic influence, as you might guess from the cover on the record – and Jiro's choppy tenor and soprano come off with some of the same sharp notes and changes you might expect from the best European funky fusion of the time. Pretty nice work from one of the hipper groups to groove around Chicago in the past decade – the almost-famous Liquid Soul, a tight little combo that was playing out years before there was any funk or jamband scene to speak of! The format of the group is similar to some of the best West Coast jazz funk acts of the early 90s – a blend of older funk styles, modern soul, and some current production styles – and this set's got the group really honing their act after earlier albums, coming across with a sound that's more deeply soulful than we might have expected. A fantastic funky set from the Sydney scene of the 60s – one of the coolest, cookingest combos to ever record in Australia at the time – and a group with a mix of mod and soul elements that reminds us of the best organ jazz recorded in London too! The group's led by the mighty Col Nolan – whose handling of the Hammond is wonderful – with lots of cool, compressed tones that work very well with the funky drums of John Sangster – a player that most folks know for his other records that feature vibes instead of drums! Raw Soul Express have a touch of jazz in their playing – coming off here with a sound that reminds us of Wood Brass & Steel, and a rare few other funk acts of the time who knew how to do more than just hit a heavy drum and pluck a noisy bass – really going beyond the usual to come up with a groove that's wonderfully crafted throughout – and way way more than just the sum of its parts! Not that the band is slick or too polished, though – because they definitely earn the "raw" in their name with some sharp edges on the instrumentation – a sharp sense of power that really helps the whole thing cook. Can we ever hope to accurately describe the genius of the Soul Children? It's virtually impossible to do so in a few short words – especially at this early point in their career, when the group were forging a whole new sound in vocal harmony soul! The group is unique in a number of respects – they've got 2 men and 2 women, they're from the south, they work in a style that's very different from other groups, with the voices getting a lot of individual space, ladies saying their thing, the guys (especially singer J Blackfoot) saying theirs – coming together on the choruses, but with more than enough space for everyone to testify, and get their own opinions out on love, life, and everything that makes loving and living great. Production and arrangements are by the Isaac Hayes/David Porter team – who've never sounded doper here – and titles include "The Sweeter He Is (parts 1 & 2)", "I'll Understand", "Move Over", "Tighten Up My Than", "Take Up The Slack", and "Super Soul". A massive legacy in soul music – served up here in one great little set – with the first five albums by Soul II Soul, all presented in tiny little LP-styled sleeves! It's hard to deny the power of the group at the time – and even all these many years later, we're amazed at how well these albums hold up – as the first two here had such a huge influence on American soul music, you might expect the sound to be old hat by now! Yet Jazzie B was still one of the first guys to successfully mix hip hop rhythms and modern soul production – at a level that was far less forced than American experiments of the mid 80s – and which found a way to carry all the hip underground love of soul and jazz from the British scene over to the American mainstream. Even the later albums here are still head and shoulders above most of their contemporaries – and beyond the classics, the whole package here is ripe for rediscovery! CD

Soul SearchersWe The People ... LP
Sussex, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
One the all time great funky albums of the 70s – a mad little record with a sense of rhythm and timing that was years ahead of its time! The Soul Searchers (along with Chuck Brown) later became known for their heavy-hitting Go Go work at the end of the decade – but here, they're a really free-thinking outfit with a lot of jazz in their funk – and a willingness to change up the beats and timings in ways that push the record miles ahead from an average funk outing. Tracks swirl around with an amazing intensity – supported by guitar work from Brown, organ from Hilton Felton, and some really great horns from Don Tillery and Lloyd Pinchback. The album features a wonderful remake of "Think" – plus the great originals "1993", "Soul To The People", "Blowout", and "We The People". LP, Vinyl record album

The Soul Stirrers pay tribute to Sam Cooke – once a member of their group, back in the days before he made the shift from gospel music to secular soul! As you might guess, the tribute focuses on gospel tunes that Sam sang with the Stirrers – redone here with strong 60s Chess gospel production, in a style that gives the tunes more of a soul type swing – almost secularizing the whole gospel group in the end! Atco, 1969. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A great little record – and perhaps the most soulful outing by this white rock band with a great talent for crossing over! The record was partially produced by Gamble & Huff, and partially produced by Rick Hall at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals – and it's a wonderful blend of the two styles that these massive forces in soul music were laying down at the time. Gamble & Huff retain the group's sweet post-harmony combo "Expressway To Your Heart" sound forged on their first album, and Rick Hall gives the band a funkier rawer sound that has them giving up a few nice funky moments. Titles include "Darkness", "Turn Out My Fire", "We Got A Job To Do", "Tell Daddy", "Go Out Walkin", and a nice cover of Calvin Arnold's "Funky Way To Treat Somebody". LP, Vinyl record album

Soul SurvivorsWhen The Whistle Blows, Anything Goes With The Soul Survivors ... LP
Crimson, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $24.99
Some of the best blue-eyed soul to come out of America during the late 60s – a soaring batch of tunes from a combo that broke down borders wherever they went! The album's the first by the group – and easily their best – based around their biggest hit ever, "Expressway (To Your Heart)", one of those songs you've heard a million times, but which always grabs you when it hits the break in the chorus! There's none of the "fake soul" style vocals that rock acts in later years would try to pick up, and these guys instead play like they're just a Philly group, ready to mash it up at some tasty club gigs. The whole thing's great, and titles include "Do You Feel It", "Respect", "Hey Gyp", "The Rydle", and "Taboo-India". LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Train/RCA, 1976. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Although it would be easy to write these guys off as a cheapo product emblazoned with the Soul Train name to cash in on the fame of the TV show, the gang's actually a pretty decent harmony soul act, and they really benefit from strong Norman Harris production on this LP. The ensemble features 2 female vocalists and 3 male ones – and they have a sweet grooving style that's kind of in the same mode as The Spinners, but which also hints at some of the later LA harmony hits on the Solar label, which is no surprise, since Solar owner Dick Griffey's involved in the project as executive producer. Philly soul arrangements abound – by Harris, Ronnie Baker, or Bobby Martin – and tracks include "That Certain Way", "How Much Longer", "All My Life", and the "Soul Train Theme". The blend is wonderful, and carried off to perfection here – touched with some added percussion and other surprises over the course of the record – but all with this lean, sharp instrumental style that never needs any vocals, nor any other added elements to hold our interest! A sweet 12" single from the limited Preservation Project series! Side one begins with The Teacher Haters – unreleased material by a 60s group that have a very soulful take on the party rock style – really mixing together garagey elements and bluesy inspirations – a bit like some of the cooler Texas combos of the time! "Big Big Polly" has vocals that are more offbeat vocalizations alongside the chorus – with this romping groove that's mighty nice – and the wild singer in the band continues his thing on "Cut Loose", while the rest of the group hold more towards a romping groovy lyric! Side two features two cuts by unknown female soul singers – both pretty great! "We Got A Thing" has this fantastic intro that's maybe worth the price of admission – setting a rising tone for the tune that the vocals really strive to match! "Guys Today" is a bit longer than the usual soul single – and has this great late nite vibe, but with a looser feel than the usual 45! 12-inch, Vinyl record

The deep funk groove of Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators – and their instant classic Keep Reachin' Up LP – remixed by an excellent group of producers/DJs/fellow travelers including Ghost, Mr Scruff, Aaron Jerome, Lack Of Afro, Elisabeth Shepard and more! The revivalist soul & funk of the original LP hardly needs an upgrade, a truism that isn't lost on the producers involved – and their reworkings wisely build from the core groove of the originals. Some cuts are tripped out on a spacier tip, others bring more of a sophisticated club soul groove, others simply ratchet up the funk. We're usually a bit turned off by the reworked/reimagined projects, but this one works incredibly well. A worthy companion piece to the vital original album! Other tracks are a bit more laidback, fitting the mood of their respective signs – and overall, the whole thing slips and slides wonderfully from cut to cut – taking you through the star signs with a really righteous, soulful approach. Incredible material from a pair of underappreciated queens of Mississippi soul – 70s Malaco material from Jewel Bass and Dorothy Moore – together on this excellent compilation from Soulscape! Jewel Bass started as a session singer in her teen years, and recorded precious little material as a solo star, making these Malaco singles all the more precious! She pulls off a number of styles on a dozen tracks here equally well, from soaringly soulful ballads to funkier numbers, raw groovers to more polished gems. In contrast, Dorothy Moore made a bigger impact sales wise in the mid 70s, but still overlooked by history – and she's another versatile singer who could pull of perfect female southern soul with big choruses and achingly soulful melodies, tearful ballads, and more uptempo numbers. Jewel Bass songs include "All Good Things Must Come To An End", "Sugar Britches", "Let Your Love Rain Down On Me", "It's Been A Long Time Coming", "Seeing You Again", "I'm Worried" and more. Dorothy Moore tracks include "See How They've Done My Love", "Same Old Feeling", "Cry Like A Baby", "Two Of A Kind", "I Know", "Diamonds" and more. 21 tracks in all, plus a cool unlisted track with Dorothy Moore plugging the US Navy, with her hit "Misty Blue" in the background! Tunes are a mix of funky fusion and modal, spiritual styles – and other players include Randy Brecker on trumpet, Gerry Niewood on tenor and flute, and George Young on soprano and alto sax – and the horns are all arranged tightly by Mitch Farber, in a way that adds an extra edge to the record, but still leaves plenty of space for Bishop's solo flights on the keys. Muse, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
One of a rare few electric albums from the great Walter Bishop Jr – a pianist who started during the bop years, but really grew into new modes in the 70s! The set's an album on Muse, but one with the same hip grooves as Walter Bishop's pair of excellent albums for the Black Jazz label – and like those gems, this set features Bishop working on Fender Rhodes – hitting a groove we never would have expected in the old days, and really going for a style that's at the hippest end of the soul jazz spectrum of the 70s! Titles include great versions of "Soul Village", "Coral Keys", and "Soul Turnaround" – plus the cuts "Philadelphia Bright", "Sweet Rosa", and "Valerie". LP, Vinyl record album

BlinkyHeart Full Of Soul – The Motown Anthology ... CD
Motown/Real Gone, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $29.99 31.99
A fantastic collection of work from Sondra "Blinky" Williams – a hell of a soul singer who recorded a fair bit for Motown Records at the end of the 60s and start of the 70s – but an artist whose music ended up mostly spending the next few decades in the label's vaults! Yet Blinky never let the lack of success stop her from giving her best – as she's a fantastic vocalist, and one with an expressive range that easily matches some of the Motown greats of her generation – a list that would include Martha Reeves or Gladys Knight – but who also has these deeper, more righteous currents that make her a perfect singer for a Motown move into the 70s! Blinky only saw one full album issued at the time – a duo with Edwin Starr titled Just The Two Of Us – but this package features a fully conceived, yet never-released album – plus other singles, unissued tracks, live material, and lots more – a wealth of fully-cooked, powerfully-produced singles that finally give the singer her due. The whole thing is an amazing Motown discovery – 46 tracks in all, 28 of which appear here for the first time ever – with titles that include "Don't Leave Your Baby", "Heart Full Of Soul", "How Can I Go On", "Inside", "I'll Make It Up To You", "One Half Of Love", "Shine On Me", "For Once In My Life", "I Wouldn't Change The Man He Is", "I Can't Turn You Loose", "People Make The World Go Round", "T'Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do", "I've Gotta Get You Back", "Mr Soul Brother", "You're The Loser Now", "One Half Of Love", and lots lots more. Blue Mandala ProjectNotes From The Outer Soul ... CD
Pietro Vincenti (Italy), 2018. New Copy ... $8.99
Beautiful work from Blue Mandala Project – an Italian group led by pianist Pietro Vincenti, an artist we really loved for his older Brazilian-styled sounds in the group Quintetto X! The vibe here has some of the sound of the older group, but there's also maybe more funk and soul elements at play – given that Pietro sometimes plays sweet electric keyboards, and that the album features soulful lead vocals from Mimma Pisto – a female singer who provides English vocals for most of the tracks! The core approach is still jazz, but the vocals really give the whole thing a very personal vibe – and all songs are written by Pietro, both music and lyrics – with titles that include "Cold Blue", "The Human Journey", "Lonely Girl", "The Trip", "Breve Amore", "Murcia", "Kali", "South Shout", and "Summer Afternoon". Booker T & The MGsSoul Dressing ... LP
Stax, 1965. Very Good ... $34.99
A great little record from Booker T and group – often overlooked amidst the range between Green Onions and Melting Pot, but a very strong album of soulful Memphis instrumentals all the way through! Book's organ is bubbling hot, and the band's tight rhythm style works in a perfect laid-back mode to push the group way past the stock grooves of earlier albums – thanks to great work from the rest of the combo too. There's some mighty nice rhythm changes on this one, and a good range of non-pop tunes like "Night Owl Walk", "Chinese Checkers", "Soul Dressing", "Tic Tac Toe", "Outrage", "Home Grown", "Big Train", "Jelly Bread", and "Plum Nellie". Robi BotosOld Soul ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
Robi Botos is a keyboardist with a nice sense of space – one that makes for an inherent sense of groove in his music, even when things are mellow! Robi's not exactly a funk musician, but the record has plenty of currents of that mode – as his own keyboards are blended strongly with the snapping drums of Larnell Lewis and well-timed bass of Mike Downes – then topped off with some mighty nice work on tenor by Seamus Blake! We're not used to hearing Blake in such a setting, which really brings out some of his more soulful elements – and the tenor is a great sharp-edged contrast to some of Botos' warmer lines on piano and keyboards. The set also features guest work from Lionel Loueke's guitar on one track – and titles include "Calhoun Square", "Budapest", "Old Soul", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Praise", "Hope", and "Diamond". CD

✨✧ Lester Bowie/The LeadersComplete Lester Bowie On Black Saint & Soul Note (5th Power/Out Here Like This/Unforeseen Blessings) (3 CD set) ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1978/1988/1989. Used 3CD ... $22.99
Three full albums – all presented in cool mini LP-styled sleeves! First up is The 5th Power – one of the best sessions as a leader ever cut by Lester Bowie – and one of the few to really share the warmth and imagination of his work with the Art Ensemble! The session features Bowie on trumpet, Arthur Blyteh on alto, Amina Myers on piano and voice, Malachi Favors on bass, and Phillip Wilson on drums – working in a set of modes that replicates the sparer and more creative passages of Art Ensemble work of the early 70s. Some of the tunes are introspective, some are freer, and one number features a gospelly approach. Titles include "The 5th Power", "God Has Smiled On Me", "Sardegna Amore", and "BBB". Next are two albums that feature Bowie in The Leaders – the first of which is Out Here Like This – a great set by The Leaders, a group that's made up of players who are normally leaders on their own, but who work together here with the great spirit of a group! The lineup features Lester Bowie on trumpet, Arthur Blythe on alto, Chico Freeman on tenor and soprano sax, Kirk Lightsey on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Don Moye on percussion – and the tracks are longish, overall – and shift easily between the straighter and more outside proclivities of the players on the set – making for a well-rounded album that showcases the mainstream aspects of the American avant scene of the time. Titles include "Donkey Dust", "Portraits", "Felicite", "Loves I Once Knew", and "Zero". Unforseen Blessings is one of the strongest albums from the Leaders sextet – an ensemble that features 6 of America's best left-of-center players of the time – all of them leaders of their own groups, putting aside ego to come together beautifully here! The set features Lester Bowie on trumpet, Arthur Blythe on alto, Chico Freeman on tenor and soprano, Kirk Lightsey on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Don Moye on percussion – all jamming to a set of original tunes that vary between longer numbers and shorter bits that are interspersed between the tracks – a balance that further underscores the creativity of the players. Titles include "Lucia", "Now A Moment", "Heaven Dance", "Peacemaker", "The Search", "Lightish", and "Sun Percussion Six". CD

James BrownJames Brown Sings Raw Soul ... LP
King, 1967. Very Good+ ... $24.99
Raw soul, indeed – a term that could have been coined for James Brown's vocal approach, and which probably makes one of its first appearances here on a record! The album's kind of a grab bag of earlier sides that James recorded for King, but it's a perfect showcase for his amazing sound in any setting – as it brings together funky bits with more straightforward soul numbers. Tracks include the great funky numbers "Money Won't Change You" and "Bring It Up", both of which show the new hard sound of James coming to the forefront – plus the tracks "Stone Fox", "Tell Me That You Love Me", "Money Won't Change You (parts 1 & 2)', "Let Yourself Go", and the hip message cut "Don't Be A Drop Out". James BrownSoul Syndrome ... CD
TK/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $22.99
A rare TK Records effort from James Brown – very much in the best uptempo funk mode of the later Polydor years! The groove here is quite similar to those better-known efforts – grooves that are a bit quicker than a few years before, but still played in a core JB funky style – live and lively, with plenty of emphasis on the rhythms! Brown often referred to his style here as disco, but it's a lot more like some of the P-Funk progressions of the period – a mode that's more polished than a grittier funky generation, yet far from smooth club or disco overall. There's plenty of choppy little groovers that make the record great – and titles include the long cut "Rapp Payback", plus "Funky Men", "Smokin & Drinkin", "Stay With Me", and "Mashed Potatoes". CD

Solomon BurkeFrom The Heart – King Of Rock N Soul ... LP
Charly (UK), 1978. Very Good ... $4.99
An obscure late 70s session by Solomon Burke – recorded in a style that's got some of the rootsier, bluesier touches of his early 70s work on MGM, plus a bit of the smoother sound from his mid 70s sides for Chess! Solomon's voice is still in fine shape on the set, and although Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams wrote most of the songs, the overall approach is lacking the cliched style that could sometimes mark Swamp Dogg's own sides from the time. Ray CharlesBirth Of Soul – The Complete Atlantic Rhythm & Blues Recordings 1952 to 1959 (3 CD box set) ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, 1950s. Used 3 CDs ... $13.99
You know, over the years, you get exposed to so many cliches about Ray Charles that it's easy to forget how great he is – but you won't after hearing this set! This totally essential box pushes way past any other collection to pull together the raw early R&B sides by Ray – much harder stuff than any of his later country soul work, and way more rockin than even his instrumental sides that show up more as "jazz" efforts. No, this stuff kicks ass – and is right up there with the best 50s R&B work by artists like Tiny Bradshaw, Wynonie Harris, or Ray Brown. Plus, a huge amount of the cuts on here never really appeared on full LPs, so it's not like you'll be able to track them down that easily on other reissues. There's a wealth of excellent material here that will open up a whole new side of Ray for you – and which will fill in loads of holes if you've already got some of his work. There's a total of 53 tracks in all, plus a great set of notes and a very handsome box – and titles include "What Kind Of Man Are You", "Get On The Right Track", "Leave My Woman Alone", "Roll With My Baby", "Jumpin In The Morning", "It Should Have Been Me", "Feelin Sad", "Mess Around", "I Wonder Who", "Blackjack", "Greenbacks", "A Fool For You", "Hard Times", "A Bit Of Soul", "I Want To Know", "It's Alright", "Ain't That Love", and "That's Enough". All cuts are vocal – and this is some of the most satisfying Ray Charles you could ever buy! CD

Ray CharlesGenius + Soul = Jazz ... LP
Impulse, 1960. Very Good- Gatefold ... $11.99
A wonderful chapter in the career of Ray Charles – and a key album in helping raise his respect level a notch or two in the early 60s! We might argue with the mathematics in the title – or at least joke that Ray was using equations as titles years before Anthony Braxton – but you can't contest the fact that this one's a classic treat, and a legendary attempt to class up Ray's bluesy style for the masses. Quincy Jones and Ralph Burns handled the arrangements, and given that the record was issued by ABC a few years before they brought Ray into a country mode, it's interesting to think what might have happened had his career continued this way. There's only a small number of vocal tracks on the record, and most of the rest feature Ray at the organ, grooving away very nicely! Titles include "One Mint Julep", "Moanin", "I've Got News For You", "Mister C", and "Stompin Room Only". LP, Vinyl record album
