Doris DayLatin For Lovers (mono/stereo/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Columbia/SFE (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
An expanded 3CD version of Latin For Lovers – one of the best moments from the 60s career of Doris Day – a set that's more bossa than the Latin promised in the title – but in the best way possible! Mort Garson provides the backings, and the tunes have this dreamy, jazzy approach that's quite a change from some of the usual arrangements used for Doris Day – which creates this great space for the singer to slide gently into the tunes – never in a way that's trying to copy Brazilian bossa modes, but which also lets Doris show off some of her more melancholy modes too. Titles include "Be Mine Tonight", "Por Favor", "Dansero", "Meditation", "Fly Me To The Moon", "Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars", and "Our Day Will Come". CD1 features the album in stereo, CD2 features the album in mono, and CD3 features "Other Latin Directions" – 18 tracks from mid 60s singles that include "There They Are", "Every Now & Then", "Caprice", "Glass Bottom Boat", "Catch The Bouquet", "Rainbow's End", "Do Not Disturb", "Possess Me", "Everybody Loves A Lover (alt version)", and "Enjoy Yourself – It's Later Than You Think". Brownswood (UK), 2022. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $25.99 26.99
A set that's even better than the first album from Str4ta – a great side project from Jean Paul Bluey Maunick of Incognito, and one that takes him back to the British 80s funk world from which he came! Gilles Peterson is Bluey's partner on the project – and he's opened the door to a lot of talents from the underground, both classic and contemporary – in a lineup that features vocals from Valerie Etienne, Omar, and Emma Jean Thackray – and work from trumpeter Theo Croker! Keyboardist Peter Hinds is also great, and has a legacy that goes back on the British scene to work in Light Of The World and Atmosfear, both seminal groups – and titles on the album include "Bad Weather", "To Be As One", "Turn Me Around", "City Sounds", "Lazy Days", "Find Your Heaven", "Night Flight", "Why Must You Fly", "Virgil", and "When You Call Me". ✨✧ Francois TusquesAlors Nosferatu Combina Un Plan Ingenieux ... LP
Cacophonic (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Never-heard music from from French free jazz legend Francois Tusques – sounds that grew out of a 1968 "happening" experiment he was doing on the Parisian scene – but which then took stronger force as the American avant garde descended on the city during the BYG/Actuel generation! The tapes were recorded at a few different events at the end of the 60s – and have this loose structure in which a large ensemble improvise freely along a musical idea, then really take off into flights of their own – in a way, maybe an early example of the improvising orchestra at work. Players include Noel McGhie, Barre Phillips, Aldo Romano, Alan Silva, Claude Delcloo, Earl Freeman, and others – and titles include "Le Fumet Du Jubjub", "La Voute D'Un Caveau Ou D'Un Charnier", and "Tout Le Pouvoir Au Peuple". Spector, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful look at club culture far from the mainstream – farther flung locales than London, Paris, or Ibiza – presented here in a way that's very different than the hype that's usually associated with the nightclub scene! There's almost a poetic approach to the book at times – a series of essays and photos that get at all the many aspects and cultures of music scenes in cities that include Bristol, Johannesburg, Cairo, Kyiv, Lagos, Lisbon, Launda, Nairobi, and Naples – illuminated wonderfully with details that go far beyond DJs and music. The book features many different voices contributing text – which furthers the spirit of the journey – and the whole thing is a hefty softcover volume – over 500 pages, with hundreds of images in color and black and white! Richie Cole with Eddie JeffersonHollywood Madness ... LP
Muse, 1980. Very Good+ ... $2.99
A great example of the Muse Records charm of altoist Richie Cole – bop-fired creativity at its peak, mixed with some added contemporary elements to keep things fresh! In this case, Richie's horn takes on some key bop classics, but also opens up a bit with vocalsits too – Eddie Jefferson on versions of "Hi Fly", "Relaxin At Camarillo", and "Waiting For Waits" – the latter of which also features Tom Waits as well! The Manhattan Transfer make some subtle guest appearances too – but in ways that are much more restrained than their own albums, really leaving most room for Richie's horn. Bruce Forman plays guitar and Dick Hindman piano – and titles include "Hi Fly", "Relaxin At Camarillo", "Hooray For Hollywood", "I Love Lucy", "Malibu Breeze", "Waiting For Waits", and "Tokyo Rose Sings The Hollywood Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Sam PrekopSparrow (with bonus download) ... LP
Tal (Germany), 2022. New Copy ... $26.99 28.99
A beautiful little record, and one that's part of a surprising shift into the world of electronics from Sam Prekop – an artist that most folks know as a completely charming singer/songwriter, yet who manages to take all the warmth of his previous work and transfer it here to an instrumental mode! The music is spare, but tuneful, and full of lyrical elements that are really wonderful, and almost poetic at points – created with a Prophet 5 at the core, but also clearly a lot of the humanity that's always made same such a fantastic artist in other modes as well. The balance is sublime, and the whole thing is very very different than so many other releases of this nature – on titles that include the side-long "Sparrow", plus "Every Night", "Step & Stair", "Fall Is Farewell", and "Palm". Underground SetUnderground Set (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Pantonic/Big Pink (South Korea), 1969. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A really groovy little record – definitely "underground", but with lots of funky sound library appeal – given that the group were mostly a studio combo, put together to record a few records like this! The set's mostly instrumental, and is filled with loads of strong organ lines from Gianpiero Reverberi – a keyboardist you might know from other work, both in the fields of prog and sound library – and here, the organ is tied to short tracks that are mostly in a groovy sort of style – 60s mod with lots of psychedelic touches – on titles that include "Atollo", "Eastern Longitude", "Underground In Blue", "Shake Twenty Six", "Equator", "Emisfero", and "Archipelago". ✨✧ VariousHunk Of Heaven – Volume 4 Of The Collectable Jazzman Sevens Series ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
Proof that there's few labels better at digging up an interesting groove than the mighty Jazzman imprint – home to a consistently great series of reissue 45s over the past 10 years or so! The Jazzman groove goes way beyond the standard deep funk line – into a realm of groovy styles that includes soundtrack bits, primitive electronics, female jazz vocals, socking 60s soul, and a whole lot more – all served up perfectly in this wonderful little set! And as with other Jazzman volumes, it's not just the music that makes the set great, but the way it's put together – as Gerald Jazzman manages to sort tunes and lay them out one by one in a style that really changes up the groove – pushing our expectations with each new number, and really keeping things fresh throughout! This one's way way way more than just a pile of rare funk tracks – a truly loving document of one label's commitment to the depth of music in all its forms – served up over a batch of 12 rare tunes! Titles include "Let's Go" by James Reese & The Progressions, "Baby True" by Gettysbyrg Address, "Hunk Of Heaven" by Lemuria, "Pretty Bird" by Terea, "Transfert 2002" by Le Groupe X, "Scherzi Pesanti" by Remigio Ducros, "One" by Mary Lou Williams, "Bobby's Mood" by Soul Toronadoes, "California Soul" by Marlena Shaw, and "Baltimore Oriole (King version)" by Lorez Alexandria. BBE (UK), Mid 90s-Early 2000s. Used 4CD ... Just Sold Out!
Part two of this stunning collection of the work of the duo known as Masters At Work! This 4CD collection showcases MAW's amazing ability to blend a wide range of influences from house, classic disco, hip hop, and Latin into a dancefloor friendly mix that not only sounds fresh and up-to-date, but which also has a very strong respect for grooves of the past. MAW have worked with so many different artists over the past 5 years, that this collection ends up being as much a rich document of the growth of club and soul music in general, as it is a testament to their own stunning work.
