CartolaCartola (1974) (Disfarca E Chora) ... LP
Discos Marcus Pereira (Brazil), 1974. Very Good ... $59.99
Incredibly solid 70s work by Cartola – recorded in that lean, folksy style used in his best records at the time – and done in a way that keeps the samba groove at an incredibly warm and personal level! The vocals here are the main attraction – recorded with a homey sort of approach – but the backing's nice too, and features small combo percussion and guitar, used lightly and in just the right way! Titles include "Tive Sim", "Acontece", "Sim", "Disfarca Chora", "Alegria", "Amor Proibido", and "Festa Da Vinda". LP, Vinyl record album

Satisfaction UnlimitedThink Of The Children (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Hot Wax/Demon (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A really compelling little set from Satisfaction Unlimited – a group we only know from this one corker of a record on the Hot Wax label! The style's a bit in some of the harmony modes of the east coast scene of the time – yet like most Hot Wax/Invictus work, there's also a bit of an odd twist too – a quality that's hard to peg in words, but which is sometimes slightly trippy, other times warmly soulful – almost a Cali indie sort of vibe – with a bit of sunshine that breaks through amidst some of the darker, heavier themes of the record. There's plenty of great numbers with a catchy vibe that could have almost gotten these guys the radio play of some of the RCA groups of the time – and titles include "Time For Us", "Think of The Children", "Bright City Lights", "Let's Change The Subject", "Come On Back", and "Why". Soul SocietySatisfaction ... LP
Dot, Late 60s. Very Good ... $11.99
One of those "studio groups play instrumental versions of soul hits" albums that were so popular at the time. Most of the stuff's fairly standard soul instrumental material – like "Soul Man", "Sidewinder", "Pata Pata", and "Cold Sweat" – but there's a very cool original called "Afro-Desia", which has a nice groove to it! Andre CymoneAC (2CD version – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/FTG, 1985. Used 2CD ... $18.99
The best of a handful of albums that the one-time Prince bassist put out in the early 80s – a record that made a splash via the great Prince-penned "The Dance Electric" – possibly a blessing and a curse for AC, as Prince was so huge at the time that the record going public was too quick to dismiss him as a clone! But don't let that stop you – as Cymone's got a groove that's all his own – and an 80s soul star definitely worth rediscovering. The percussive vibe is similar to Prince, but Andre's got a leaner, funkier style overall – virtually working as a one man band here, and handling most instrumentation himself – which brings a compact feel to the record that really comes through in the tightness of the grooves. Titles include "The Dance Electric", "Lipstick Lover", "Pretty Wild Lover", "Book Of Love", "Vacation", "Satisfaction", and "Neon Pussycat". Massive 2CD version features loads of bonus tracks – 20 more numbers that include lots of mixes of "The Dance Electric", "Satisfaction", and "Lipstick Lover" – plus "Vacation (Andre Cymone mix)", "Let Me Kiss The Bride (inst)", and "Anything (inst)". DevoQ: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! ... LP
Warner, 1978. Very Good ... $24.99
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah, Y- Y- Y- Y- Y- Y- Y-eah, this is one of best art rock albums of all time – the Eno produced full length debut of Devo – the caustic, sarcastic and fun soundtrack to society's devolution! There's nothing we don't love about Devo at this point, from their unprecedented use of multimedia, to the hard to pull off fusion of sneering social and pop culture satire with good humored fun, and that's just the conceptual stuff. The songs are original and inimitably great, too, with those squeeling synth punk dynamics. Tracks include (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (best rock cover ever?) "Jocko Homo", "Mongoloid", "Uncontrollable Urge", "Space Junk", "Come Back Jonee", "Sloppy (I Saw My Baby Gettin')" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Art FarmerSoul Eyes (with bonus track) ... CD
Enja/Solid (Japan), 1992. New Copy ... $9.99
Never-failing genius from Art Farmer – recording here in his later years, and working in that long and open-ended mode we love so much! There's few trumpeters who could make a record like this work – but Farmer's got a tremendous ability to stretch out on longer tunes with well-crafted solos that make beautiful use of soundspace and texture – letting his trumpet almost float along in the air and find its own notes, while the trio of Geoff Keezer piano, Kenny Davis bass, and Lewis Nash on drums provide just the right sort of accompaniment. The album's got a grace that matches any of Art's excellent mid 70s sides from Japan – and is proof that his talents never waned as the years went on – making him one of the few talents from his generation who continued to create and invent beautifully over time. Titles include "Soul Eyes", "Isfahan", "Will You Still Be Mine", "Sad To Say", "Time On My Hands", and "Recorda Me". CD

Joe HendersonLush Life – The Music Of Billy Strayhorn ... CD
Verve, 1991. Used ... $4.99
Amazing sounds from Joe Henderson's later years – a completely sublime take on the music of Billy Strayhorn, and a wonderful demonstration of Henderson's mature talents on the tenor! There's a fantastic balance here between darkness and light, grit and clarity, heard in Joe's very first notes on the set – and holding on strong through some of the bolder moments in the set – with work by a shifting lineup, from solo to quintet, that features Wynton Marsalis on trumpet, Stephen Scott on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Gregory Hutchinson on drums. Yet although Marsalis might be a draw for some folks, we really love it best when Henderson gets to do his own thing – stretching out in these marvelous laidback solos that are heavy on those rich tones he developed in his early years, yet turned towards Strayhorn's brilliant ear for space between the sounds. Titles include "Blood Count", "Isfahan", "Rain Check", "Lotus Blossom", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", and "Upper Manhattan Medical Group". CD

Pride/Octave (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... About December 18, 2019
The Incredible Bongo Band returns – with a second super-tasty batch of funky instrumentals! As before, the group seek to rework older echoes of music with some tight 70s funk percussion – played by a lineup that includes lots of drums from Jim Gordon, and loads of sweet percussion from the legendary King Errison – who cut a fair bit of funky records under his own name too. Many of the tracks are older numbers, but mixed with new tunes here – co-penned by arranger/producers Michael Viner and Perry Botkin – and the rhythms here are even more offbeat and complex than the first time around. Titles include the classic "When The Bed Breaks Down I'll Meet You In the Spring" – plus "Sing Sing Sing", "Pipeline", "Wipe Out", "Topsy", "Satisfaction", "Kiburi", and "Sharp Nine" – and with the bonus track "Ohkey Dokey Part I". Low LeafBaker's Dozen – Low Leaf ... LP
Fat Beats, 2019. New Copy ... $18.99 19.98
The most outwardly cosmic entry in the Baker's Dozen series to date – courtesy of producer, multi-instrumentalist and all around soulful spirit Low Leaf! We were introduced to Low Leaf through her soul jazz inspired, though ultimately (and refreshingly) hard to define craft built around harp and vocals – though abstract beatcraft was often a vital part. Naturally, she leans more on that hear without grounding her soaring style at all. She's a really impressive choice to helm an entry in Fat Beats' far reaching hip hop instrumentals series – as she's no doubt as much inspired by Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane as Madlib or Ras G – so it's really something special. Includes "Heart Chakram", "Veviter", "Sup God", "Innersound Oddity", "Taliz", "O'ahu", "Black Earthsong", "Pure Satisfaction", "Nu Era", "Endtrodabata" and "Dusty Stringz". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Moderna Orquestra De SambaSambalanco ... CD
Pawal/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1963. Used ... $9.99
A totally wonderful little combo – and one that features some excellent horn solos with a very jazzy vibe! The groove here is definitely the samba rhythms you'd expect, but there's also a lot of jazz in the mix too – a strong sense of soloing that has some key players stepping out from the larger lineup for extended spots on their own – including a alto saxophonist, a trumpeter, and trombonist – all with a very well-developed sound! The rhythms are great – nice and lively – but its these (unfortunately unnamed) soloists who really make the album great – and give it way more flavor than just a standard Brazilian instrumental set. The group's led by maestro Marku Rupe – and titles include "Sem Bossa", "Tao Bom", "Era Bom", "Caminhando", "O Tempo Nao Desfaz", "A Sandalia Dela", "Doi Doi Doi", and "O Maioral". CD

Membran (Germany), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
A mindblowing record from the great Ed Motta – a set that continues all the warmer, English language elements of his recent albums – but one that also seems to have Ed hitting a new sort of sophistication too! The sound is incredible – almost out-AORing all the global AOR references that Motta's given us in both his own music, and some of the great collections he's done over the years – but there's also more of a special small combo vibe, with some instrumentation on the record that seems even more compelling than usual – and which includes some great guitar moments from Ed, in addition to Fender Rhodes. Take it from us, the whole thing is superb – as appealing to fans of the older soul tradition that Motta inherited in his youth, as it is to people who love jazzy vocals, and even those elite few of us who think that Steely Dan were one of the highest points in 20th Century music. (Ed's with us on that one, by the way!) Palm UnitDon't Buy Ivory Anymore – The Music Of Henri Texier ... CD
Komos (France), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99
Palm Unit began their recorded career with a great tribute to French jazz legend Jef Gilson – but here, they maybe sound even more amazing – in an album that takes on the tunes of bassist Henri Texier, but with results that are completely the group's own! Bass definitely figures in the music – as organist Frederic Ecoffier plays some very cool bass synth too – but the music has this warm, organic flow that's very much like some of the more unusual albums that Texier recorded in the 70s – music that certainly has jazz at the core, but which is very open to embracing other sounds too – in a lineup that also features Lionel Martin on tenor, Philippe Pipon Garcia on drums, and Abraham Mansfarroll on percussion. The drums and percussion dance along in these wonderful rhythms with the keyboards and electric bassbits – and the tenor tops things off with a very soulful vibe. The set features one track with vocals – "Le Piroguer" – and other titles include "Homme Rogue", "Mad Nomad", "Don't Buy Ivory Anymore", "Quand Le Blues S'En Ira", and "Mr Freeman". CD

A really lost slice of work from the legendary Scott Walker – material recorded for his short-lived TV show and specials for the BBC in the late 60s! Scott here is at the height of his powers – the god-like voice from the albums Scott 1 through Scott 4 – working mostly with his arranger Wally Stott, on a mix of material that includes some favorites from the records, done in new TV versions, plus a number of other tracks that we've never heard Scott sing before! The original videos of the broadcasts have been lost forever, but these audio records remain – and the CDs also feature patter from Scott, some introductions, and guest performances from Kiki Dee, Blossom Dearie, OC Smith, Billy Preston, and others. Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970s. New Copy ... About December 18, 2019
Hi Records way past the hits – served up here in a wonderful batch of rare singles that go way past the obvious numbers you may know from the label! Most of the cuts have this mellow groove that's mighty nice – not totally laidback, but kind of slow-stepping in a style that takes off from the usual Willie Mitchell territory – and has different elements with each of the many singers in the set – a lineup that includes many folks you may not have known worked for the label! Deep soul pervades, but the approach often has some of those modern mellow elements that were coming into hipper southern scenes in the mid 70s – a great maturation that really comes through in a track selection that includes "I Must Be Losin You" by Willie Clayton, "Satisfactorize Your Mind" by Africano, "Now That I've Found You" by The Masqueraders, "Trying To Live My Life Without You" by Venice, "What Do You Mean" by Gene Miller, "He's Got It" by Known Facts, "Baby Love" by Gene Anderson, "Any Ways The Wind Blows" by Erma Coffee, "What Made You Change" by Eddie McGhee, and "When The Battle Is Over" by The Joint Venture. Les Disques Robespierre (Spain), Late 60s. New Copy ... $28.99
Weird and wonderful music – more than enough so to live up to the cover's image of a communist Antoine Doinel in a film by Jean-Luc Godard! The music here has little to do with cinema, but is part of that same new sense of freedom that was sweeping the French scene in the 60s – with a sound that's straight enough to be the pop promised in the title, but is never afraid to take all sorts of chances with the instrumentation, arrangements, and production! In other words, the songs here are as groovy as French pop tunes from a few years before, but also get nice and trippy too – often in the space of a few short minutes, which makes all the cool touches even more amazing. Titles include "Super Girl" by Les Fleurs De Pavot, "Mao Mao" by Claude Channes, "Le Diable De Pres" by Francoise Deldick, "L'Insatisfait" by Carine, "Je Te Veux" by 5 Gentlemen, "J'Ai Traverse L'Enfer" by Monty, "Pour Les Miss" by Nicky Nicolas, and "Satisfaction" by Gammas. Studio One/Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99 32.99
A fantastic collection of righteous work from the 70s years of Studio One – tracks from a time when the label was giving voice to some of the deeper cultural strands of Jamaican music, including a fair bit of Rastafarian-inspired material – presented here by both bigger names at the label, and some much more obscure artists who only recorded briefly at the time! The package may well be the deepest in this excellent series from Soul Jazz – and like the rest, it not only offers up some killer music, but does so in a way that really understands its subject – and presents the tunes with copious notes to bring greater meaning to the message. ✨✧ Black PearlBlack Pearl ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Heavy drums and a good dose of soul – both of which make Black Pearl stand out a bit from many of their late 60s contemporaries! There's a definite bluesy undercurrent to the group's music, but the riffs are also pretty hard and fast too – almost a bit funky at times, and delivered with a starker sort of groove than the usual blues rock combo. The musicianship is super tight throughout – really at a superstar level, but without sounding slick or commercial – and the album alone is worth it for the sharp drums and guitar leads, but also sports some pretty great vocals too – with almost a garagey soul sort of feel. Titles include "White Devil", "Mr Soul Satisfaction", "Thinkin Bout The Good Times", "Crazy Chicken", "Forget It", "Climbing Up The Walls", "Reach Up", "Bent Over", and "Endless Journey". ✨✧ Otis ReddingOtis Blue – Otis Redding Sings Soul ... LP
Volt, 1965. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Otis Redding Sings Soul – plenty of truth in that – but on this sweet little set, he somehow does it even better than before! The album's got a tightness that's totally great – but it's light years from the smoother soul of Motown, and still has plenty of the gritty Memphis edges that helped Otis rise to the top in the 60s – that burning-under sort of groove that pushes up from the earth along with his vocals, and gives the album a push that most other singers never got! Redding's vocals are as perfect as usual – deeply personal, and free from cliche – even from all of those laid down by Otis' copycats of the time. Titles are a near-perfect mix of numbers too – and include the raw groovers "Respect", "Shake", and "Satisfaction", then hits a wonderfully warm soulful ballad style the classic "I've Been Loving You Too Long", and really sparkles on southern soul tributes like "You Don't Miss Your Water" and "Down In The Valley". Very solid stuff all the way through – and one of the best-conceived albums of his career! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Herbie MannMississippi Gambler ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
After dipping into the Memphis Underground, Herbie continues his tour of the funky south – recording here at American Studios in Memphis (only 5 miles from Mississippi, we guess!), with a small combo that includes Bobby Emmons on organ, Bobby Wood on electric piano, and Reggie Young on guitar! There's a relaxed easy groove to the album that makes it one of Mann's most consistently satisfying funky albums – a really cool, laidback style that's a great showcase for Herbie's funky flute – and David Newman turns out some great solos on tenor and flute, which really soup the record up! Tracks are long, and titles include "Dippermouth", "Mississippi Gambler", "Respect Yourself", and "Satisfaction". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mulatu And OthersEthiopian Modern Instrumentals Hits (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
L'Arome/Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Mad grooves from the Ethiopian scene of the 70s – featuring work by the enigmatic Mulatu, plus some of the other extra-cool artists on that country's groundbreaking soul and funk scene! Mulatu plays Fender Rhodes and organ on his tracks – grooving with a slow, snakey approach that's almost a bit like the work of Sun Ra, but which also has distinct African touches. The sound here is quite different than the Nigerian funky work of the 70s – much more laidback and open-ended, with less American influences, and a really unique approach! Titles include "Yekermo Se", "Yegele Tezeta", "Munaye", "Metche Dershe", "Kasalefkut Hulu", and "Tezeta" by Mulatu Astatque; "Heywete" and "Bemgnot Alnorem" by Bahta Gebre Heywet; and "Yetesfa Tezeta" by Tesfa-Maryam Kidane. Vinyl release of tracks pulled from the Ethiopiques CD-only series, done with some good notes. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Palm UnitDon't Buy Ivory Anymore – The Music Of Henri Texier ... LP
Komos (France), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of classic soul – 5CDs and 100 tracks in all – all with the upbeat, soaring vibe that's always made these underground American cuts such favorites on the UK Northern Soul scene! The package starts with Motown, then really takes off – featuring loads of killer cuts from Chicago, Philly, and beyond – almost all from the late 60s, but with a few contributions from other years too – and all of the chart-shy quality that belies the love of rare and unusual cuts that made the Northern Soul dancefloors such a groundbreaking place for soul. ✨✧ VariousStudio One – Black Man's Pride 3 – None Shall Escape The Judgement Of The Almighty ... CD
Studio One/Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Whey No Dead" by Glen Miller, "When The Time Comes" by Zoot Simms, "Wrong Doers" by Sugar Minott, "Jehovah" by The Nightingales, "It's No Secret" by Alphonso Stewart, "Conscious Dread Lock" by Horace Andy, "Dread Oppression" by The Mellodies, "Jah Jah Help Us" by Big Joe, "Can't Catch Me" by Wailing Souls, "Get Up & Try" by Lloyd Jones & The Super Natural Six, "Satisfaction" by Errol Dunkley, "Give Natty Dread Glory" by Mr Manchester, and "Selassie Bandman" by The Manchesters. ✨✧ Four TopsFour For The Road ... CD
Sunset Blvd, 1996/2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The original and most legendary line-up of the Four Tops – Levi Stubbs, Abdul "Duke" Fakir, Renaldo "Obie" Benson and Lawrence Payton – reunited for a triumphant anniversary show at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas! Levi Stubbs is his impassioned soulful self out front and the harmonies are endearing and heartfelt in a way that really makes us wish we were in the room – and if the live recording lacks the manicured grandeur of the monumental Motown classic versions, it has energy and experience to spare. Includes "MacArhur Park", "Shake Me, Wake Me", "Baby I Need Your Loving", "Ain't No Woman (Like The One I Got)", "Bernadette", "Walk Away Renee", "Reach Out I''l Be There", "Standing In The Shadows of Love", "Reach Out To Me", "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)", and nod to thier influencees with "(I Can't Get No)Satisfaction" and "Jumpin Jack Flash". ✨✧ 9th CreationStep Ahead (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Past Due, Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic music from 9th Creation – an album that was recorded in the early 80s, but never issued at the time – which is a heck of a shame, as it's some of the best work we've ever heard from the group! The album's got a great blend of funk and soul – with a deepening of both the vocal and instrumental arrangements, at a level that really keeps things interesting throughout – and which unlocks these righteous elements in the music that we totally love! There's a fair bit of uptempo tracks, but these are mixed with great mellower moments too – with a vibe that's maybe a bit like the last few Leroy Hutson albums on Curtom – which is mighty fine praise from us. The notes indicate that only cassette copies were made of the sessions, but Past Due have done a wonderful job of bringing the music back to life with surprisingly strong fidelity – and titles include "More & More", "Always Be Lovers", "Let It Shine", "Beautiful Lady", "Music Is My Pen & Paper", and "A Step Ahead". CD features lots of bonus tracks – "Mellow Music", "Love Crime", "Maybe", "She's The Kind", "Bygones", "A Step Ahead (7" mix)", and demos of "Satisfaction Guaranteed", "Love Can Find A Way", and "Whenever You Need Me". ✨✧ SpinnersWhile The City Sleeps – Their Second Motown Album Plus Bonus Tracks (2nd Time Around/bonus tracks) ... CD
Motown/Kent (UK), 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous collection of early work by The Spinners – their sublime second album for Motown, plus 13 additional bonus tracks, most of which appear here for the first time ever! The core of the set is the 2nd Time Around album – pre-Philly magic from The Spinners – a wonderful early album recorded for Motown – done with a heady Detroit sound that's quite different than their later work in the 70s! The album already has the group sounding amazing on the harmonic tip – definitely a cut above the groups that came before them – with that brilliant Spinners ability to harmonize heavily while still hitting a groove! Arrangements are by Paul Riser, Wade Marcus, and David Van DePitte – all of whom keep things full, but never overblown – presenting music with a perfect polish for the group, but in quite different ways than the later Philly groove. Titles include the classic original version of "It's a Shame", plus "My Lady Love", "Souly Ghost", "Ooh Child", "In My Diary", "My Whole World Ended", "I've Got To Find Myself A Brand New Baby", "Bad Bad Weather", and "Pay Them No Mind". But the bonus tracks are pretty amazing, too – really showcasing the group as they grew tremendously in a few short years – on gems that include "I Can't Let You Go", "Sunshine Train", "Mental Telepathy", "Satisfaction Guaranteed", "Why Don't You Try It", "Just A Little Part Of Your Life", "Sadder Words Were Never Spoken", "Don't Take Your Love Away I Can't Stand It", "Your Sweet Love Is All I Need", "Gonna Keep On Tryin Till I Win Your Love", and "When It Starts To Rain It Pours".
