SatisfactionSatisfaction ... LP
Decca/Alternative Fox (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99
The only album ever recorded by Satisfaction – a wonderful British group from the key jazz rock years of the scene, but one who have a sound that's maybe more personal and intimate than the rest! These guys are never too proggy, and are only just a sextet – one that's fronted by some excellent trumpet from Mike Cotton, who'd recorded some other great work on the UK mod scene of the mid 60s – evolved here into a style that's more rocking, but also has currents of soul and funk in just the right ways – with plenty of flute, trombone, alto, and tenor – alongside vocals that are often warmly harmonized by the group, which makes for a really great approach! The songs have plenty going on, but are also nice and tight – and tunes include "Gregory Shan't", "Love It Is", "Just Lay Back & Enjoy It", "She Follows The Band", "Call You Liar Liar", "Go Through Changes", and "Cold Summer". Satisfaction UnlimitedThink Of The Children (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Hot Wax/Demon (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
A really compelling little set from Satisfaction Unlimited – a group we only know from this one corker of a record on the Hot Wax label! The style's a bit in some of the harmony modes of the east coast scene of the time – yet like most Hot Wax/Invictus work, there's also a bit of an odd twist too – a quality that's hard to peg in words, but which is sometimes slightly trippy, other times warmly soulful – almost a Cali indie sort of vibe – with a bit of sunshine that breaks through amidst some of the darker, heavier themes of the record. There's plenty of great numbers with a catchy vibe that could have almost gotten these guys the radio play of some of the RCA groups of the time – and titles include "Time For Us", "Think of The Children", "Bright City Lights", "Let's Change The Subject", "Come On Back", and "Why". ✨✧ AurraSatisfaction (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Family Groove, 1984. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A previously-unreleased album from Aurra – laid down in the studio after the group's famous run for Salsoul Records – and with a groove that's even leaner and meaner than before! Mainmain Steve Washington is still at the helm of the group – but vocals are handled by Mark Stevens and Sheila Horne (the latter of whom sung with Brides Of Funkenstein), wrapped together in that great male/female duo mode that always made the Aurra sound so great! Stevens and Horne handle both ends of the spectrum wonderfully together, and bring a wide soul sound to the lyrics – while Washington keeps things mighty tight in the background – using these bumping basslines that bounce between 80s groove and boogie effortlessly – no surprise, given that the set was recorded right at the heart of the Ohio funk scene of the time. There's nothing "lost" or half-baked about the sound here – as the album's easily one of the tightest ever from Aurra – and tracks include "Turn The Lights Down Low", "Satisfaction", "My Lovin Is For You", "Perfect Date", "Hide & Seek", and "Never Met No One Like You". CD features two bonus tracks – "Turn The Lights Down Low (inst)" and "Perfect Date (7" single mix)". CD

✨✧ Laura BraniganSelf Control (2CD version – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Cherry Pop (UK), 1984. New Copy 2CDs ... Just Sold Out!
Laura Branigan gets some help here on arrangements from Harold Faltermeyer – who makes things a bit funkier than you might expect – although still very much in the kind of poppy style he used famously on some big 80s soundtracks! The mode works well for Laura – whose approach is always on the soulful side of pop, but still filled here with all the sense of drama that made Branigan huge on the charts at the time. Titles include "Heart", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", "The Lucky One", "Self Control", and "Satisfaction". This 2CD version features the main album on CD1 – and CD2 features rare material that includes "Hot Night", "Self Control (ext)", "Self Control (classic summer mix 1982)", "The Lucky One (Jack White mix)", "Satisfaction (special dance mix)", "When (single)", "Lucky One (John Robie mix)", and "Self Control (117 bmp club 1992)". DevoQ: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Rhino, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... On October 16, 2020
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah, Y- Y- Y- Y- Y- Y- Y-eah, this is one of best art rock albums of all time – the Eno produced full length debut of Devo – the caustic, sarcastic and fun soundtrack to society's devolution! There's nothing we don't love about Devo at this point, from their unprecedented use of multimedia, to the hard to pull off fusion of sneering social and pop culture satire with good humored fun, and that's just the conceptual stuff. The songs are original and inimitably great, too, with those squeeling synth punk dynamics. Tracks include (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (best rock cover ever?) "Jocko Homo", "Mongoloid", "Uncontrollable Urge", "Space Junk", "Come Back Jonee", "Sloppy (I Saw My Baby Gettin')" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Heaven Sent & EcstasyGreatest Love Story ... LP
Jamieko/P-Vine (Japan), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... About October 2, 2020
Heavenly soul from the start of the 80s – a sweet little indie set that's done as a tribute to Minnie Riperton and Kenneth Armstrong! The overall format doesn't have that much to do with Minnie, but the record's still pretty darn great – and the style is a mix of modern, mellow, and boogie – all served up with a real sense of earnestness that matches the cover of the album, and which makes the record stand strongly next to some of the bigger releases of the time. A number of tracks feature vocals by the lovely Pamela Morrison, and the group hails from the Oakland scene of the time – working here under the direction of Barbara J Trotter, who also wrote a good number of the titles on the set too. Titles include the dancefloor jammer "Sho Nuf Funky Beat", plus "We're Together Again", "I See Heaven", "Satisfaction To The Bone Nitty Gritty Naked Bone", "I'm A Lady", "Rapping With My Subconscious Mind", and "We're Together Again". ✨✧ Joe HendersonLush Life – The Music Of Billy Strayhorn (promo CD) ... CD
Verve, 1991. Used ... $3.99
Amazing sounds from Joe Henderson's later years – a completely sublime take on the music of Billy Strayhorn, and a wonderful demonstration of Henderson's mature talents on the tenor! There's a fantastic balance here between darkness and light, grit and clarity, heard in Joe's very first notes on the set – and holding on strong through some of the bolder moments in the set – with work by a shifting lineup, from solo to quintet, that features Wynton Marsalis on trumpet, Stephen Scott on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Gregory Hutchinson on drums. Yet although Marsalis might be a draw for some folks, we really love it best when Henderson gets to do his own thing – stretching out in these marvelous laidback solos that are heavy on those rich tones he developed in his early years, yet turned towards Strayhorn's brilliant ear for space between the sounds. Titles include "Blood Count", "Isfahan", "Rain Check", "Lotus Blossom", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", and "Upper Manhattan Medical Group". CD
(Unusual promo pressing, released in a standard digipak.)

Incredible Bongo BandBongo Rock (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Pride/Universal (Japan), Early 70s. Used ... $12.99
A landmark album that is perhaps the single most influential beat source in hip hop! The record was the brainchild of bongo player Michael Viner – who also happened to be running the Pride subsidiary of MGM at the time. Viner's got a meeeeeean touch on the bongo, hitting it hard and funky like the best 70s conga players – and his approach to the instrument is kind of like a funky update of popular instrumental styles laid down on guitar by The Ventures or on moog by Hot Butter. This album features the classics "Apache" and "Bongo Rock" – both with monster funky breakdowns that showed up on a heck of a lot of hip hop records over the years – plus loads of other goodies like "Last Bongo In Belgium" and "Bongolia". Excellent stuff – and darn hard to find! (We can still remember how stunned we were when we found our first copy in a Canadian record store back in 1987 – and even then we had to pay plenty!) Japanese reissue version includes 4 bonus tracks – "Sing Sing Sing", "Kiburi (part 1)", "Satisfaction", and "Last Bongo In Belgium (breakers mix)". CD

✨✧ Ennio MorriconeLa Monaca Di Monza/La Califfa ... CD
GDM/Quartet (Spain), 1969/1970. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Two very beautiful soundtracks from Ennio Morricone – back to back in one massively overstuffed package! La Monaca Di Monza is a masterpiece in slow strings and moody sounds – a work that's almost as tense as some of Morricone's horror scores, but which also has this flowing, redemptive quality in the strings – almost a precursor of the sounds that he's bring to his global successes of the 80s – but at a richer, more personal level here in the early setting. Titles include the great "La Monica Di Monza" theme, in a few variations – plus "Quel Giorno", "Dopo La Notte", "Canone Per Quattro", "Svegliarsi Pensado", and "Falsa Tranquilita". La Califfa is a really moody little record from Ennio Morricone – spare, subtle, and extremely beautiful – touched with notes of sadness and remorse, but also handled with a strong spirit of redemption! The sound here isn't as cold or atonal as that on some of Morricone's horror work – but it's also not sweet and dreamy either. Instead, there's kind of an economic use of piano, light strings, and odd sonic textures – woven into a tapestry of shorter tunes that convey a real sense of loss, but also a quietly growing beauty. There's a few wordless vocals on the set, but things are mostly instrumental overall – and titles include "La Califfa", "La Pace Interiore", "Fari Nella Notte", "La Cena", "Notturno", "Sotto La Pioggia", and "Sangue Sull'Asfalto". CD features 42 tracks in all – over 76 minutes of music! CD

Mulatu And OthersEthiopian Modern Instrumentals Hits (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
L'Arome/P-Vine (Japan), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $26.99
Mad grooves from the Ethiopian scene of the 70s – featuring work by the enigmatic Mulatu, plus some of the other extra-cool artists on that country's groundbreaking soul and funk scene! Mulatu plays Fender Rhodes and organ on his tracks – grooving with a slow, snakey approach that's almost a bit like the work of Sun Ra, but which also has distinct African touches. The sound here is quite different than the Nigerian funky work of the 70s – much more laidback and open-ended, with less American influences, and a really unique approach! Titles include "Yekermo Se", "Yegele Tezeta", "Munaye", "Metche Dershe", "Kasalefkut Hulu", and "Tezeta" by Mulatu Astatque; "Heywete" and "Bemgnot Alnorem" by Bahta Gebre Heywet; and "Yetesfa Tezeta" by Tesfa-Maryam Kidane. Rare Earth/Culture Factory, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.99
One of the rarest albums from Rare Earth – and one of the funkiest, too – an obscure soundtrack release from the end of the 60s, and a set that maybe has the group taking off in wilder directions than some of their other records of the time! Some tracks are nice and long, and the group use their trademark Detroit-bred mix of soul and rock in a really wonderful way – even stretching out on a few tunes by other folks too! Otis ReddingLive At The Whisky A Go Go – The Complete Recordings (6CD set) ... CD
Stax, 1966. New Copy 6 CDs ... $45.99 59.98
The complete document of a legendary live recording by Otis Redding – material that not only shows a slightly different side of Redding than his studio albums for Stax – but which also continued to flow out in parts, issued after his too-early death, as a way of keeping his music alive! During the 60s, as Otis recorded his classics for Stax, he was also spending an insane amount of time performing live – hitting the road constantly, as live performance was the way he could really make a living – to a point where his presence on the stage was incredible, and Redding had blossomed into a hell of an entertainer, instead of just a simple singer of songs! The power of that level of performance really comes through here – material that comes from three nights of live performance in Los Angeles, with a huge amount of work appearing here for the first time ever, especially in correct order and format. Over the course of the whopping 6CDs in the set, Otis moves through familiar numbers, some key covers, and a few surprising tracks – and a number of selections are even longer than usual. Redding seems to especially take off on his covers – turning in extended versions of cuts like "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" and "Satisfaction" – but the whole thing is great. 65 tracks in all, with great notes and a poster too! Warner/Rhino Handmade, 1968. Used ... $34.99
A huge double-length live set of the groovy Tiny Tim at the height of his powers – and one that maybe offers up the fullest document of his surprisingly strong impact on the late 60s scene! The album's overflowing with tracks, all recorded by producer Richard Perry while Tim was strumming and singing at London's Royal Albert Hall – reworking old songs with a very strange vibe, leaving his imprint on some more contemporary numbers, and acting maybe more like an entertainer than you'd hear on record. Titles include "Save Your Sorrows For Tomorrow", "Welcome To My Dream", "Livin In The Sunlight Lovin In The Moonlight", "I Gave Her That", "Where Does Daddy Go When He Goes Out", "I Got You Babe", "Mr Tim Recalls His Visit With The Rolling Stones/I Can't Get No Satisfaction", "Nowhere Man", "I'll See You Again", and "The Other Side". A really lost slice of work from the legendary Scott Walker – material recorded for his short-lived TV show and specials for the BBC in the late 60s! Trama (Brazil), 2005. Used ... $6.99
A wonderful overview of the rich strands of music that have been coming out of Brazil's Pernambuco region in recent years – a brilliant criss-crossing of styles that's some of the freshest new work we've heard in a while! Pernambuco is somewhat free from the confines of the bigger cities, and is a virtual crossroads of cultures in the north of Brazil – a place where older rhythms and instrumentation come into play with styles borrowed from Europe and Africa – not just old and acoustic, but new and electronic as well! Tracks on the set are highly rhythmic and extremely striking – rootsy one minute, but freshly modern the next. And although a few names here will be familiar to those interested in modern Brazilian music, there's some even more surprising lesser-known artists on the set! Titles include "Anum Azul" by Isaar, "Cordao De Prata" by Selma Do Coco, "Balao Azul" by Banda De Pifanos De Caruaru, "Poneteio Acutilado" by Antonio Nobrega, "Anjos Do Asfalto" by Otto, "Trancelim De Marfim" by DJ Dolores, "Blunt Of Judah" by Nacao Zumbi, "Fuloresta Do Samba" by Siba, "A Ponte" by Lenine, "A Missa" by Mombojo, and "Alice Williams" by Mundo Livra SA. ✨✧ Roy HeadSame People ... LP
Dunhill/Demon (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic bit of southern funky rock from Roy Head – an artist who's in the same territory here as Tony Joe White on his early albums for Monument! Like Tony on those gems, Roy's got a heavy dose of soul in his music – produced to perfection by Huey P Meaux, who was handling plenty of work from the deeper side of the southern spectrum at the time, and who makes Head sound fantastic here with a vibe that's kind of in a Texas-meets-Muscle Shoals sort of style! There's a great core group – heavy on organ, riffing guitar, and a tight team of trumpet and tenor – and the heavy drums on the set make it super nice and funky! Sampled by Tribe Called Quest, Lord Finesse, and others – and with the cuts "Soul Train", "Neighbor Neighbor", "Don't Want To Make It Too Funky", "Trying To Reach My Goal", "Same People", "Mama Mama", "Driving Wheel", and the break-heavy "Double Your Satisfaction". Finally back on wax, and pressed up on double vinyl to boot! Pre-MF Doom/Metal Fingers, et al, classic from then-Zev Love X and DJ Sub Roc. The last chance before everybody had to be hardcore. Humor, knowledge and pure niceness, on par with the first De La album, though it never broke as huge. A whole other side of the man who'd become Metal Face, before the tragic loss of Sub Roc and subsequently strident and once lost but now widely available LP Black Bastards, this was one of the highwater marks in hip hop. Essential listening. ✨✧ Otis ReddingOtis Blue – Otis Redding Sings Soul (Original Master Recording) ... CD
Volt/Atco/Mobile Fidelity, 1965. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Otis Redding Sings Soul – plenty of truth in that – but on this sweet little set, he somehow does it even better than before! The album's got a tightness that's totally great – but it's light years from the smoother soul of Motown, and still has plenty of the gritty Memphis edges that helped Otis rise to the top in the 60s – that burning-under sort of groove that pushes up from the earth along with his vocals, and gives the album a push that most other singers never got! Redding's vocals are as perfect as usual – deeply personal, and free from cliche – even from all of those laid down by Otis' copycats of the time. Titles are a near-perfect mix of numbers too – and include the raw groovers "Respect", "Shake", and "Satisfaction", then hits a wonderfully warm soulful ballad style the classic "I've Been Loving You Too Long", and really sparkles on southern soul tributes like "You Don't Miss Your Water" and "Down In The Valley". Very solid stuff all the way through – and one of the best-conceived albums of his career! CD

Killer stuff! Despite the early date and boppish orientation of the material on this album, the tracks have a sinister modernist edge that easily belies the later work of both Roach and Hank Mobley. The set kicks off with the incredible stormer "Cou Manchi Cou", then slides into a crackling batch of cuts that include "Mobleyzation", "Chi Chi", "Sfax", and "Orientation". There's lots of amazing drum work, and some incredible arrangements that show a very far-reaching sensibility on Roach's part. LP, Vinyl record album

There's a definite bluesy undercurrent to the group's music, but the riffs are also pretty hard and fast too – almost a bit funky at times, and delivered with a starker sort of groove than the usual blues rock combo. The musicianship is super tight throughout – really at a superstar level, but without sounding slick or commercial – and the album alone is worth it for the sharp drums and guitar leads, but also sports some pretty great vocals too – with almost a garagey soul sort of feel. Titles include "White Devil", "Mr Soul Satisfaction", "Thinkin Bout The Good Times", "Crazy Chicken", "Forget It", "Climbing Up The Walls", "Reach Up", "Bent Over", and "Endless Journey". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red & green Broadway label pressing. Cover has a cutout notch.)

✨✧ Arnett CobbFunky Butt ... CD
Progressive/Solid (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Strong later work by tenor sax legend Arnett Cobb – in a quartet session cut in New York in January of 1980 – sounding fresh and revitalized one of his final studio dates! Funky Butt actually isn't a left turn into a funk sound Cobb, but it is a pretty darn great showcase for his rich, full sounding and playful tenor approach – not too out of character from his work in the late 50s on Prestige. He's backed by a great group that includes Ray Drummond on bass, Derek Smith on piano and Ronnie Bedford on drums. It's got a few fairly stomping numbers, particularly the opener "Jumpin' At The Woodside" and their energetic take on "I Got Rhythm" – and the whole set is terrific – with the bluesy Cobb-composed title track, plus "September In The Rain", "Isfahan", "Georgia On My Mind" and "Satin Doll". ✨✧ Andre CymoneAC ... LP
Columbia, 1985. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The best of a handful of albums that the one-time Prince bassist put out in the early 80s – a record that made a splash via the great Prince-penned "The Dance Electric" – possibly a blessing and a curse for AC, as Prince was so huge at the time that the record going public was too quick to dismiss him as a clone! But don't let that stop you – as Cymone's got a groove that's all his own – and an 80s soul star definitely worth rediscovering. The percussive vibe is similar to Prince, but Andre's got a leaner, funkier style overall – virtually working as a one man band here, and handling most instrumentation himself – which brings a compact feel to the record that really comes through in the tightness of the grooves. Titles include "The Dance Electric", "Lipstick Lover", "Pretty Wild Lover", "Book Of Love", "Vacation", "Satisfaction", and "Neon Pussycat". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear and a promo stamp.)

✨✧ Roy HeadSame People ... LP
Dunhill, 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
(Cover has light wear and a small cutout hole.)

✨✧ Wendy & LisaFruit At The Bottom ... LP
Columbia, 1989. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The second album from the team of Wendy & Lisa – and a record that nicely gets past some of the more mainstream sounds of the first! The styles here move a bit more away from the mid 80s pop/soul modes the pair first forged with Prince – and there's a bit more variety in the arrangements and song structure overall – showing the deeper talents that always lurked behind the pair's more pop-tuned sensibilities. The overall sound is still pretty late 80s, but in a way that shakes off a fair bit of cliche – and titles include "Lolly Lolly", "Are You My Baby", "Satisfaction", "Always In My Dream", "Everyday", and "I Think It Was December". London/Abkco, 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A legendary greatest hits collection from the Rolling Stones – one that was so popular back in the day, it was maybe the one Rolling Stones album that everyone had in their collection! The package was a great way for folks to go back and catch up after digging in deep on Exile On Main Street and Let It Bleed – and the set has work from the earliest years of The Stones all the way up to those classics – a killer set list that includes "Get Off Of My Cloud", "Gimme Shelter", "Brown Sugar", "Wild Horses", "Honky Tonk Women", "Sympathy For The Devil", "Satisfaction", "Ruby Tuesday", "Play With Fire", "Paint It Black", "Jumpin Jack Flash", "Street Fighting Man", "Midnight Rambler (live)", "You Can't Always Get What You Want", "Time Is On My Side", "Heart Of Stone", "19th Nervous Breakdown", "Let's Spend The Night Together", and "Mother's Little Helper". ✨✧ Palm UnitDon't Buy Ivory Anymore – The Music Of Henri Texier ... CD
Komos (France), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Palm Unit began their recorded career with a great tribute to French jazz legend Jef Gilson – but here, they maybe sound even more amazing – in an album that takes on the tunes of bassist Henri Texier, but with results that are completely the group's own! Bass definitely figures in the music – as organist Frederic Ecoffier plays some very cool bass synth too – but the music has this warm, organic flow that's very much like some of the more unusual albums that Texier recorded in the 70s – music that certainly has jazz at the core, but which is very open to embracing other sounds too – in a lineup that also features Lionel Martin on tenor, Philippe Pipon Garcia on drums, and Abraham Mansfarroll on percussion. The drums and percussion dance along in these wonderful rhythms with the keyboards and electric bassbits – and the tenor tops things off with a very soulful vibe. The set features one track with vocals – "Le Piroguer" – and other titles include "Homme Rogue", "Mad Nomad", "Don't Buy Ivory Anymore", "Quand Le Blues S'En Ira", and "Mr Freeman". CD
