Only the fourth year of this amazing all-star group – and they've already got their own sound so strongly in place, they really make some fresh magic with the music of Thelonious Monk! Arrangements of Monk tunes are by different members of the group – pianist Renee Rosnes, trumpeter Dave Douglas, bassist Matt Penman, drummer Eric Harland, tenorist Joshua Redman, and alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon – who work here alongside the vibes of Bobby Hutcherson in some stunning remakes of "Oska T", "I Mean You", "Ugly Beauty", "Bye Ya", "Criss Cross", "Brilliant Corners", and "Bright Mississippi" – handled by the octet in a style that reminds us of some of Monk's late 50s larger group work on Riverside. The songs of Horace Silver never grow old – they've had a special sort of soulful energy from the early Blue Note years onward – really kept alive here in a set of great performances by this all-star group, who also mix in some excellent originals of their own! SF Jazz, 2016. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Miles Davis is on the cover, but the record is definitely in the best spirit of the SF Jazz Collective – a group who are very open about their inspirations, but always take the music in very different, personal directions too! The set begins with a range of Miles Davis classics from a few generations, then moves into equally great original material from the group – presented in a way that maybe even acts as a blue print for what they were doing to the music of Miles! As usual, arrangements are all original, by members of the group – which includes work by Warren Wolf on vibes, David Sanchez on tenor, Sean Jones on trumpet, Miguel Zenon on alto, Robin Eubanks on trombone, and Edward Simon on bass – on titles that include "Nardis", "Tutu", "All Blues", "Teo", "Joshua", and "Bitches Brew" – plus "Tribe", "Canto", "Feel The Groove", "Hutcherson Hug", and "Shields Green". SF Jazz, 2011. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The San Francisco Jazz Collective, recording in New York – doing a really wonderful job with a host of tunes from the mighty Stevie Wonder! These aren't soul songs, or easy cover versions – as the tunes are complex and jazz-based right from the start – stretched out in ways that only use the compositions as an initial framework, before adding in all these really creative arrangements, and strong solos from just about every member of the group! This time around the lineup features Stefon Harris on vibes, Mark Turner on tenor, Miguel Zenon on alto, Avishai Cohen on trumpet, Robin Eubanks on trombone, Edward Simon on piano, Eric Harland on drums, and Matt Penman on bass – an instrument that's really important to the shape of many of these tunes. ✨✧ SF Jazz CollectiveLive The At SF Jazz Center 2019 – Miles Davis In A Silent Way & Sly & The Family Stone Stand ... CD
SF Jazz, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest albums ever issued from this all-star group – a 50th anniversary tribute to two classic albums from 1969 – In A Silent Way by Miles Davis, and Stand by Sly & The Family Stone! The pairing is a great one – as Miles was listening to a lot of Sly in the late 60s, and the Family Stone were a key part of the SF scene at the time – but the group here makes the whole thing come across as way more than just a recasting of classics – because, like other tributes to their inspirations, the Collective have a really strong way of making things completely their own! Sly tracks alternate with Miles numbers – and vocals are handled by Martin Luther McCoy, who's worked with The Roots – in a group that also includes Warren Wolf on vibes, David Sanchez on tenor, Etienne Charles on trumpet, Adam Rogers on guitar, and Edward Simon on piano. The vocal tracks are nice and long – with a lot more jazz instrumentation than vocals – and titles include "I Want To Take You Higher", "Sex Machine", "In A Silent Way/It's About That Time", "Everyday People", 'You Can Make It If You Try", "Shh/Peaceful", and "Sing A Simple Song".
