S Tone IncBody & Soul ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2020. Sealed ... $13.99 16.99
The funkiest album so far from Stefano Tirone – aka S Tone – a set that's got a much clubbier vibe than some of his other records, and a very strong influence both from vintage boogie and funky jazz! Tirone plays plenty of Wurlitzer and other keyboards on the set – and most tunes have jazzy energy at the core, as you'd expect from Schema Records – but also often open up in ways that are more deeply soulful than both the artist and label might make us expect! Toco sings on a few tracks, and steps aside for other singers who include Afra Kane, Laura Fedele, Gui Hargreaves, and Priscila Ribas – who work with Stefano to change up the colors from song to song – a but like in that old DJ/producer soundsystem mode. Titles include "Flying Away", "No Meio Do Samba", "In The Name Of Love", "Midnight Sun", "Move On", "Pra Voce", "Flying Away", and "Blow My Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ S-Tone IncSobrenatural ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2002. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first full length album by Italy's S-Tone – a very groovy group that's right in the best Schema Records tradition! Like other groups on Schema, S-Tone have a wonderful talent for mixing bossa influences, modern beats, and traces of jazz, vocal, and soundtrack inspirations – effortlessly combining the diverse in ways that few other groups can match without sounding all clunky and derivative. There's a professional poise to the record that really makes it sparkle – just the right notes placed at just the right moments, nothing ever too forced or out of line, with just the right amount of spaciousness to make the grooves hit home. Titles include "La Boca Del Rio", "Take 4", "Limbe", "Effetto Notte", "Memphis Freeway", "Bahia Mon Amour", and "Vai Ser Bom". CD

✨✧ S Tone IncBody & Soul – The Disco Experience ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet set of remixes – material from the already-clubby album Body & Soul, taken to even further dancefloor territory by maestro Stefano Tirone! The core album already had a really upbeat vibe – with nicely varied vocals from Toco, Afra Kane, and Laura Fedele – and the remixes here balance things out in an equally great way – on titles that include extended remixes of "Pra Voce", "In The Name Of Love", and "Rosa Da Ribeira" – plus remixes of "Midnight Sun", "No Meio Do Samba", "Move On", and "Body & Soul" – and an Invisible Session remix of "Odoya". Schema (Italy), 2022. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
A great remix here from Afra Kane – who opens up the soulful sound of "Got To Move On" in a really great way! Kane puts lead vocals over the track, which has much more of a Brand New Heavies sort of vibe than anything else we've ever heard from S-Tone – although the man himself also adds in some mighty nice keyboards! "Rosa Da Ribeira" is remixed too – a cut that has more of the clubby Schema vibe of other S-Tone records, complete with vocals from Toco! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Charlie ByrdOnce More – Charlie Byrd's Bossa Nova ... LP
Riverside, Early 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A lovely little record from the man who helped Stan Getz find his bossa – and a set that's done with just a bit more backing than usual from Byrd for the time! The album makes nice use of additional percussion, vibes, cello, and a bit of flugelhorn to back up Byrd's work on acoustic guitar – never in a way that dominates too strongly, with just enough added sound to color in the grooves with a slightly deeper tone. Titles include "Presente De Natal", "Three Note Samba", "Limehouse Blues", "Cancao De Nimar Para Carol", "Chega De Saudade", and "Anna". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousBreak N' Bossa – Chapter 6 ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2003. Very Good- 3LP ... $14.99
Jazzy bossaness abounds – in this fab 6th volume of the always-great Break N Bossa series! This time around, the crew at Schema have gone a bit deeper than usual for the tunes – picking out a good blend of singles that show the true evolution of the bossa influence on the European scene – not just bossa nova remix material, but a wide range of cosmically grooving tunes that have taken the beats of Brazil to a whole new level! And as usual, the Schema interpretation of the bossa sound is all top-shelf all the way – making for a really great set that's filled with wonderful tunes. Titles include "Zenith" by Soulstance, "Running With The Devil (Buscemi rmx)" by Puddu Varano, "Destino (Ben Human inst rework)" by Eli Goulart, "Black Forest Stomp (Gerardo Frisina rmx)" by Hipnosis, "Revelation" by S-Tone Inc, "Listen Love" by UFO, "Malandragem" by Drumagik, "Clouds" by Big Bang with Jessica Lauren, and "Carnival Espirito" by Big Bossa. 3LP set features bonus unmixed tracks "Sophisticated Samba" by Gerardo Frisina and "Barloventenho Blues (Gerardo Frisina rmx)" by Frank Hernandez – both of which are exclusive to the vinyl – plus the tunes "Feliz Viaje" by Buscemi, "Midnight Session" by Buscemi, "Trading Eights" by Five Corners Quintet, and "Forecast" by Pathless – all of which appear on the "mixed" section of the CD version. Dizzy GillespieComposer's Concepts ... LP
Mercury, Early 60s/1977. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $7.99
Nice 2LP set that brings together some of his most striking sessions of the early 60s recorded for Emarcy. This set includes pieces composed and arranged by Lalo Schifrin played by a large ensemble led by Benny Carter – with Dizzy as the main soloist, and work by players that include James Moody, Phil Woods, Emil Richards, Francisco Aguabella, and Schifrin himself. Tracks are long, and have complicated introductions – then easily give way to the sort of flowing grooves that Schifrin was penning often at the time. Titles include "The Conquerors", "The Chains", "The Swords", "The Empire", and "The Legend Of Atlantis". The set also features Diz playing tracks from Tom McIntosh, one of the scene's brightest arrangers at the time, and a talent who was looming large, thanks to support from folks like Diz and James Moody. Moody's in the group – blowing tenor with a quintet that includes Kenny Barron on piano, Chris White on bass, and Rudy Collins on drums – and his tone is incredible, with a darkness that he'd rarely had before, and the whole group has a mixture of modern tones and soulful grooves that's beyond compare! Titles include "November Afternoon", "The Cup Bearers", "The Day After". Also included are songs from the soundtrack for the lost Shirley Clarke verite drama The Cool World. Mal Waldron wrote the material for the score, and Diz plays the music with a moody emotionality that you don't often hear in his other 60's work. The recording was made by his great group that included Kenny Barron and James Moody, and the titles include "The Pushers", "Duke's Fantasy", "Coney Island", and "Street Music". Joep BevingPrehension (180 gram pressing – with download) ... LP
Deutsche Grammophon, 2017. Sealed ... $29.99
Beautiful solo piano work from Joep Beving – material that's maybe rooted in a tradition that goes back to French composers who include Satie and Debussy, but which also has some of the more contemporary warmth of some of his Deutsche Grammophon contemporaries, like Max Richter! Yet unlike some of those artists, Beving's approach here is relatively traditional – just acoustic piano, no other instrumentation – played with a flow that evokes the post-minimalist tradition, and which at times almost reminds us of Wim Mertens – with a great sense of flow and tone. Titles include "Hanging D", "Sonderling", "A Heartfelt Silence", "The Gift", "Ab Ovo", "Kawakaari", and "Pippa's Theme". LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny CrissCriss Cross ... LP
Imperial, Late 50s. Very Good ... $19.99
An odd one for Sonny Criss – as the record purports, on the back, to be a new recording of tunes, but really appears to be a collection of titles from some of Sonny's different sessions for Imperial, put together under a new title. We can't argue with the quality of the work, though – because Criss is impeccable, and he's blowing with this amazing tone, and incredible economy, in a group that includes Sonny Clark on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Lawrence Marable on drums. Titles include "Sunday", "The Man I Love", "Love For Sale", "Blue Prelude", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", and "More Than You Know". LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny HammondGears (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Milestone/BGP (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
One of our favorite albums of all time – and a record that just gets better and better the more we listen to it – and we've listened to it for years! Johnny "Hammond" Smith began his career as a simple soul jazz organist – but by the time of this album, he'd teamed up with the mighty Larry Mizell, the genius arranger/producer who'd breathed new life into the careers of Donald Byrd and Bobbi Humphrey. Mizell works with Hammond in the same way he does with other jazz artists – by taking a groove that works best with their solo style, and slowly layering other instrumentation and effects on top of it, so that when the solo kicks in, it's supported on waves and waves of funky sounds and soulful grooves. Mizell and his brother Fonce both play keyboards on the record, and the rest of the group includes monster fusion players like Harvey Mason, Roger Glenn, Hadley Caliman, and Jerry Peters. The real treat is Johnny, though – as his solos are heavenly, the best of his 70s work, stripped mean and lean, laid in at just the right points. Includes the breakbeat classic "Shifting Gears", the house classic "Los Conquistadores Chocolates", and funky numbers "Fantasy" and "Tell Me What To Do". This stunning version adds in some killer bonus tracks – 6 never-heard cuts from the Milestone vaults, including "Song For My Family", "Funky Native", "Detroit Rainbow", "Can't We Smile (alt)", and slow and fast versions of "A Child's Love". Jared GoldReemergence ... CD
Strikezone, 2018. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Contemporary Hammond giant Jared Gold hardly needs to reemerge – as all of his albums in recent years have been completely top-shelf – and have really marked the musician as one of the best jazz organ talents around! Here, Gold certain reaffirms that reputation – working with amazing deftness that calls to mind the quick changes on the keys that Don Patterson brought to jazz organ work in the late 60s, mixed maybe with a bit of the soaring flow of Larry Young at the same time! The trio is super-tight too – and features the great Billy Hart on drums, and frequent partner Dave Stryker on guitar – plus guest trumpet work from Jeremy Pelt on three tracks, really giving the album a great layer of color with his tone. Titles include "Lookin For Another Pure Love", "One For John A", "She's Leaving Home", "Nomad", "Blues Connotation", "Reemergence", and "It Ain't Necessarily So". CD

Ricky Tick (Finland), 2005. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $14.99
A mad slab of genius from Five Corners Quintet – one that easily matches the brilliance of the group's other singles, but which also has them expanding their sound a bit! Mark Murphy does some wonderful guest vocals on the tune "Before We Say Goodbye" – a breezy jazz dancer that recalls some of Murphy's best work of the 70s, and which reminds us of how many other singers he's inspired in recent years! Okou adds in some lovely female vocals to "Blue Cycles" – a moody modal number that has great vibes and piano at the bottom, plus a nicely cutting tenor lead up top! "Straight Up" completes the single – and is a jazzy, hard-rolling Latin-styled tune that's all-acoustic, all wonderful, and filled with dancefloor energy! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Piano, tenor, and nothing else at all – the former played by Nicki Adams, the latter by Michael Eaton – at a level that's very different than any sort of old school duets of this nature! Neither player is pulling back at all – there's less of the sense of "you go first, then me" here – because the instruments roll together with a shared sense of fluidity, tone, and color - still allowing for solos, but working with a unified richness that's the most beautiful aspect of the album! Genius work from Pepper Adams – one of those players we sometimes forget about, then drop the needle on a record like this and fall in love with his music all over again! Adams blows baritone sax like nobody else – with a sensitivity that you'd normally hear on tenor, and a mix of modes that should have made him one of the most respected saxophonists of his generation – something that maybe didn't happen because of his unusual horn! Yet although big, there's nothing heavy about the way Pepper handles his horn – as you'll hear especially on the few ballads – and as usual for Adams, his choice of a group is great too – a sharp lineup with Walter Norris on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Makaya Ntshoko on drums. Titles include "Julian", "Ad Astra", "Jirge", "Spacemaker", and "Three & One". CD features two bonus tracks – "Time On My Hands" and "Lady Luck". CD

A stone classic from Cannonball Adderley – and a pivotal set that has him continuing the live recording setting of some of his best 60s albums, while also stretching forward to some of the more inventive ideas of the latter part of the decade! David Axelrod produced, and the album's definitely got his ear firmly in place – a great way of bringing together the album's hip instrumentation – Cannon's alto, Nat Adderley's cornet, and the wicked electric piano of Joe Zawinul – played here in a style that would go onto have a huge influence on countless other musicians on the instrument. Rhythm is by Victor Gaskin on bass and Roy McCurdy on drums – and as with other Axelrod live albums, there's some great spoken bits left in the mix – Cannon's charming conversation with the audience, which really opens up the tunes. AffinityAffinity (4CD set – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Paramount/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy 4CD ... $36.99 51.99
A massive set of work from Affinity – a group who only gave the world one classic album, but have a heck of a lot more to offer too! The set begins with the self-titled album from Affinity – a British rock combo, but one with a distinctly jazzy feel – one that's often quite funky at times too! The core instrumentation is heavy on keyboards and guitar, set over some tightly rhythm bass and drums – often moving with some hip jazzy changes in the mix, and a nice sense of space between the notes that really helps things groove. Vocals are by Linda Hoyle, who again has a bit of a jazz-based approach – almost like Norma Winstone or Julie Driscoll at times in the way she soars out majestically over the rhythms, but somewhat more lyrically oriented overall. Titles include "I Am & So Are You", "Night Flight", "Three Sisters", "Mr Joy", and "I Wonder If I Care As Much". CD2 continues the jazzy spirit, with a whole host of instrumentals showing some soul jazz roots of the group – as they take on "Jive Samba", "All Blues", "Fever", "Out Of The Storm", "Comin Home Baby", and "Mercy Mercy Mercy". CD3 features origins of the group, with 17 more tracks from 1965 to 1967 – including more jazz work too – and CD4 features 9 more tracks recorded after the classic album – including "Rio", "Sunshower", "Grey Skies", "Mora's Hand", "Sarah's Wardrobe", and "Highgate". The lineup's nice and jazzy, too – and features lots of tenor work from Timo Lassy, next to vibes, trumpet, guitar, and warm lines on both Hammond organ and Wurlitzer piano – all with a feel that's part funk, part soundtrack – yet served up in the best Schema way, which means that things go far past just being a retro rehash of the past! Toshiko Akiyoshi & Charlie MarianoToshiko Mariano Quartet (Candid) ... CD
Candid/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1960. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
One of the few recorded meetings of alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano and pianist Toshiko Akioshi in the studio – quite strange given that they were a couple at the time! The session's easily one of the last great American sessions by either player – a work that shows Mariano's alto really building on the strengths of his work in the 50s, and Akioshi's piano shedding some of its early bop influences, and going for the richly-toned sound that would serve her greatly in the 70s. The long tracks here offer plenty of space for Charlie's sharp tone to really do its thing – and that raspy warmth of the 50s is even more deeply soulful at this point – and augmented by a new sense of composition that gives the record some of its best tracks. There's almost a nascent sense of spiritualism here – quite unusual for the time – and titles include "When You Meet Her", "Toshiko's Elegy", "Deep River", and "Little T". CD

If the "figures" in the title here sounds a bit familiar, it's because Figures was a great return to form for the legendary Aksak Maboul – a record that showed that their unusual mix of sounds and styles was alive and well into the 21st Century – used here as a platform for new creation by a hosts of artists and producers invited to the project by the group! These tracks aren't remixes, and are definitely "redrawn" in the spirit of the title – fresh music that moves between a variety of modes, but which often still retains the leaner feel of the group in their current incarnation. Tenorist Melissa Aldana is no newcomer to jazz, but this Blue Note debut really seems to open up a special sort of sound in her music – a mode that's both deeper and more sensitive, and filled with a really rich sense of color and tone! A key musical partner on the date is guitarist Lage Lund – whose sense of sound really balances the bolder notes from Aldana – as does his fluid sense of rhythm, which is accentuated by the bass of Pablo Menares and drums of Kush Abadey. Sullivan Fortner handles the keys – both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes – and punctuates the proceedings in all the right ways, almost providing these footholds as Melissa soars on tenor. Titles include "Emilia", "The Bluest Eye", "The Fool", "Lost Ojos De Chile", "Intuition", and "Falling". CD

Lorez AlexandriaThis Is Lorez/Lorez Sings Pres ... CD
King/BGP (UK), 1957. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Incredible early work from Lorez Alexandria – the kind of albums that instantly set her apart from other singers of the 50s, reissued here properly for the first time in years! On This Is Lorez, the singer is working with sublime small combo backings from the group of pianist King Fleming – an unusual Chicago ensemble that includes Wilber Wynn on guitar, Ronald Wilson on flute and oboe, Vernel Fournier on drums, and Audrey Jones on bongos – a musical lineup that brings in a different sort of sophistication to the record, shading tunes with moody colors on flute and oboe that perfectly support Alexandria's soulful and sensitive interpretations of the tunes. The whole thing is pure genius, and a key look at the new levels of sophistication that were bubbling everywhere on the Chicago scene during the years of Jamal and Sun Ra. Lorez Sings Pres follows in a very similar mode – with backing by a Chicago group that again includes King Fleming piano, plus Charles Stepney on vibes, Paul Serrano on trumpet, and Vernel Fournier on drums – an extremely hip lineup that makes the record far more than just the Lester Young tribute promised in the title! But despite the instrumentalists, the real star on all sides is Alexandria – who sings with dark tones and deep colors that go far beyond conventional jazz vocals – all carried off with that slightly breathy mode that was one more unique aspect of her work! CD features all tracks from both albums – a total of 22 titles that include "Snowstorm", "I'm Glad There Is You", "The Sky Is Crying", "I'm Making Believe", "Necessity", "Penthouse Serenade", "DB Blues", "This Year's Kisses", "Easy Living", "No Eyes Blues", "Jumping With Symphony Sid", and a key early reading of "Baltimore Oriole". Gene AmmonsBoss Tenor ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1960. Used ... $7.99
A soul jazz classic from Gene Ammons – the kind of session that easy made him "boss" on tenor – with a tone and conception that few other players could touch! The set is done in a style that's laidback, but never too loose – bouncing along in that "with conga" style of rhythm that was used strongly at the start of the 60s – with Ray Barretto on percussion, alongside Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. The style is nice and echoey – a mode that works well not only here, but on most of the 22 other albums that Ammons went onto record during the next 2 years! Titles include "Close Your Eyes", "Canadian Sunset", "Hittin' The Jug", "Confirmation", and "Blue Ammons". CD

A wonderful batch of mellow, laidback balladry by Gene Ammons. Like a lot of the two-fers issued by Milestone and Prestige in the 70s when they came under the Fantasy umbrella, this set collects sides from a couple of different sessions, Nice An' Cool and The Soulful Mood Of Gene Ammons in this case. Sidemen are Richard Wyands, Doug Watkins and JC Heard, or Patti Brown, George Duvivier and Ed Shaughnessy. 16 tracks in all, including "Till There Was You", "Little Girl Blue", "Something I Dreamed Last Night", "I Remember You", "Someone To Watch Over You", "Two Different Worlds", "Skylark", "Three Little Words", 'Street Of Dreams" and "Under A Blanket Of Blue". ✨✧ AmnestyFree Your Mind – The 700 West Sessions ... CD
Now Again/Stones Throw, 1973. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Rare funk from the Indy scene of the early 70s – the long-overdue release of material recorded by a really hard-jamming, horn-heavy combo! Amnesty have a sound that's awash in the best large group influences of the time – a bit of Earth Wind & Fire, a bit of Parliament/Funkadelic, but also a grittier, more guitar-based groove at times too – one that rumbles heavily at the bottom of the rhythms, with a sound that's like Norman Whitfield-era Motown, taken to much greater extremes! There's actually a lot more Detroit going on in the work than Indy – but the horns also have a jazzier, more open-ended quality too – not just parts penned for simple funky rhythms, but ones that show some influence from the more righteous side of the jazz spectrum. The material was all recorded on two dates in 1973 – but only issued here for the first time – and together, the tracks are a great example of a hip group from the underground, really letting loose with a great sense of freedom. There's some vocals on the record, but almost more of a focus on the instrumentation overall – and titles include "Can I Help You", "Love Fades", "Trouble Will Remain", "We've Come A Long Way", "Liberty", "Mister President", "Free Your Mind", "We Have Love", and "Lord Help Me". Neil Ardley, Norma Winstone, Ian Carr, & OthersMike Taylor Remembered (limited 180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Lantern Editions (Italy), 1973. New Copy ... $29.99 34.99
A beautiful tribute to the legendary British pianist Mike Taylor – recorded at the equally legendary Landsdowne studios in the early 70s, with contributions from some of Taylor's key contemporaries – and released here for the first time ever! Taylor was a rising star in the London scene of the 60s, but sadly passed away right at the end of the decade – leaving a great sense of loss and unfulfilled promise – part of which is addressed by the work on the set. All tracks are original compositions by Taylor – music penned back in the 60s, and given a more ambitious performance here by a large ensemble directed by Neil Ardley – and featuring Henry Lowther and Ian Carr on trumpets, Barbara Thompson and Ray Warleigh on reeds, Peter Lemer on piano and electric piano, Alan Branscombe on vibes, and Norma Winstone on vocals. There's strands here of some of the other high-concept large ensemble work from the UK in the same generation – echoes of Mike Westbrook or Mike Gibbs – but the style's also more personal too, with more of the spirit of some of Taylor's own small group recordings from his all-too-short career. Titles include "Summer Sounds Summer Sights", "Half Blue/Pendulum", "I See You", "Song Of Love", "Folk Dance No 2", "Jumping Off The Sun", "Black & White Raga", and "Timewind". Epic, 1971. Very Good Gatefold ... $6.99
The second album by Argent – Rod Argent's project immediately after the breakup of the Zombies! There's plenty of Zombie-like ideas here – particularly those floating around the Odyssey and Oracle album, but they're also done without the dreamy pop style of Colin Blunstone's vocals, which makes for a much harder sound overall. Added into that the guitar of Russ Ballard, which really kicks into the tunes nicely, and you've got some great rock and roll work – written with a pop sensibility, but played with a razor-sharp edge that's pretty hard hitting. Titles include "Lothlorien", "Rejoice", "Pleasure", "Sweet Mary", "Where Are We Going Wrong", "Rejoice", "Cast Your Spell Uranus", and "Celebration". LP, Vinyl record album

Backings are always filled with lots of jazzy touches, too – the kind of sophisticated soul elements other would cop from the pair in years to come – and titles include "Over & Over", "It's You", "If You're Lying", "Couldn't Get Enough", "Destiny", "So So Satisfied", and "Tried Tested & Found True". An expanded, remastered version of the album Prophecy – early work by Albert Ayler, recorded live in 1964 at the Cellar Cafe in New York, but not issued by ESP until years later, after his untimely early death. The performance is a trio outing – with Ayler's tenor alongside the bass of Gary Peacock and drums of Sunny Murray – all freely skirting around each other's space on the date, in a way that allows Ayler to take the bold lead with his sharp-toned solos, but which also allows for free interplay between the bass and percussion. Ayler's tone and wide swaths of sound are simply amazing – and titles include two variations on "Ghosts", plus "Spirits", "Prophecy", and "Wizard". ESP/ZYX (Germany), 1964/1965. Used ... $9.99
A double-length set that brings together 2 key early live sets by Albert Ayler – both recorded on the New York scene of the mid 60s! Bells was an unusual one-sided record that featured only 20 minutes of music, performed with an intensity that hardly leaves room for complaints about the shortness of the album! The single track "Bells" was performed at Town Hall by Ayler with a group that includes Donald Ayler on trumpet, Charles Tyler on alto sax, Lewis Worrell on bass, and Sunny Murray on percussion – all coming together in a raw, real sense of freedom – beautifully explored here without ever getting too overindulgent. The tune may well be one of the greatest illustrations of the ESP format at its best – as Ayler and company never stray too far, but carve out some incredibly imaginative space through their starkly-blown horn solos! Prophecy is longer – a full album that was recorded live in 1964 at the Cellar Cafe in New York, but not issued by ESP until years later, after Ayler's untimely early death. Albert Ayler with Don CherryEuropean Recordings Autumn 1964 Revisited ... CD
Hat Art/Ezz-Thetics (Switzerland), 1964. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99
A huge 2CD set – one that features important European work that saxophonist Albert Ayler recorded with trumpeter Don Cherry! CD1 brings together six tracks from Albert Ayler's Hilversum Radio sessions from 1964 – plus an additional three tracks recorded in Denmark a few months earlier! The first six titles are a famous performance by a famous group set loose on a European tour in 1964 – Ayler on tenor, Don Cherry on cornet, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sunny Murry on drums – recorded in The Netherlands for a small audience in a Dutch radio studio! The setting is a wonderful one – a mix of the live freedoms that would really let Ayler stretch out – especially when playing overseas – but recorded with the clarity of some of his studio albums for ESP – that sharp-edged sound that really highlights the groundbreaking style of his playing! The rest of the group here is equally great, and Murray is completely freed up from rhythm at points, to fly beautifully with the rest – on titles that include "Angels", "CAC", "Infant Happiness", "Ghosts", and "No Name". The same group performs on the final three tracks – recorded in Copenhagen for Danish Radio, with an equally great level of clarity – on "Saints", "Spirits", and "Vibrations". The interplay between Ayler and Cherry is especially great – echoing the latter's material with Ornette Coleman, but with a different sort of edge! CD2 features amazing live material from 1964 – work that was recorded at the Club Montmartre in Copenhagen, right around the same time that Albert Ayler recorded his album for Debut Records – and a set that has his quartet in even more firey formation overall! The tracks are long, and Ayler is completely unbridled – at a level that really shows not only how much of a leader he was to the American avant underground, but what an inspiration he was to the European free scene too – who could only help but take a big cue from his work here on tenor! The group also features equally wonderful work from Don Cherry on cornet – sounding quite different than when with Ornette Coleman – plus bass from Gary Peacock, whose dark tones really set the mood – and drums from Sunny Murray, who is also at an explosive point in his career. The material is remastered wonderfully, with permission from Albert Ayler's estate – and titles include "Mothers", "Saints", "Vibrations", Spirits", "Children", and a shorter "Spirits". CD

Dare 2, 2016. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
A really unusual group, with a sound that's certainly the sum of its wonderful parts – but also different in ways you might not expect! The lineup is excellent – the legendary Dave Holland on bass, Lionel Loueke on guitar, Chris Potter on tenor and soprano sax, and Eric Harland on drums – all working together in these very groovy styles that seem to have Holland pulling a lot more bold basslines than usual – almost as if he's using an electric version of the instrument, although it appears to just be an acoustic with a pickup! There's a soulful vibe to the record that you might not expect – shades of color and tone that are maybe closest to Loueke's music, but also very different than his own records – and Potter's really great in this setting, and blows with these open lines that are still as angular and sharp as usual, but maybe a bit warmer too. Titles include "Blue Sufi", "Aziza Dance", "Summer 15", "Walkin The Walk", and "Finding The Light". LP, Vinyl record album

AzymuthCascades/Rapid Transit ... CD
Milestone, 1982/1983. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
Sublimely soulful work from Azymuth – 2 albums back to back on a single CD! Cascades is fantastic fusion from a group who just couldn't miss during these early 80s California years! The sound here is smooth, but never slick – always a little offbeat, and quite different from more mainstream US fusion of the time – thanks to the genius of Jose Roberto Bertrami's keyboards, which glide one moment, dip the next, and often have these slight changes in speed that are totally great. Other members of the core trio include Alex Malheiros on bass and guitar and Ivan Conti on drums and percussion – and the set also features guest work by Mauricio Einhorn on harmonica, Jose Carlos on flute, and Sidney Moreira on percussion. Titles include "Remembering Milton", "Club Morocco", "Through The Window", "Festa Nativa", "Cascade Of The Seven Waterfalls", and "Indian Pepper". Rapid Transit is a set with a really warm groove overall – hardly the too-fast, or too-urban record you might expect from the title! Instead, there's a nicely organic sensibility going on here – a sound that feels fresh and spontaneous, even when it's in the highly electric territory of Jose Roberto Bertami's keyboards. There's a slight bit of added flute and percussion on the set, but most of the sounds here are from the core Azymuth trio – who even vocalize wordlessly on one of the album's best tracks. Titles include "Missing Doto", "Make Mine Guarana", "Gate Of Time", "I'm Just Looking Around", "Somewhere In Brazil", and "Afternoon". CD

One of Azymuth's best-remembered albums from their American years on Milestone – a really killer classic that beautifully blends Brazilian and American styles of fusion! There's a simple, elegant feel to these tunes that takes off nicely from the group's previous album for Atlantic in Brazil – a pushing forward of the soulful sides of their style, but with just the right blend of quirkier elements as well – one that still keeps the edge of the early years, yet helps the group reach out with a wonderfully warm sound! Most tracks are quite spare, and without any too-smooth polishing in production – and titles include the classic "Jazz Carnival", a funky fusion classic if there ever was one – plus "Light As A Feather", "Avenida Das Manguerias", "This Exists", "Partido Alto", "Dona Olimpia", "Amazonia", and "Young Embrace". A record that hides a bit under its title and cover – looking like a songbook session, and without Chet Baker's dreamy face on the front – but one that stands every bit as strongly with Baker's other late 50s sessions for Riverside, and done with an equally nice set of New York elements in the mix! The lineup is nicely unusual for a Chet Baker date – Herbie Mann on flute and tenor, Zoot Sims on alto and tenor, Pepper Adams on baritone, and even some piano from Bill Evans – and even though the tunes are all familiar Lerner & Loewe standards, they really come alive in the handling of these top shelf artists. Titles include "Show Me", "I Talk To The Trees", "On The Street Where You Live", "The Heather On The Hill", "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face", and "Almost Like Being In Love". CD

Brann handles his chords with a sense of color that's as strong as the masters of the electric guitar in the 50s and 60s – but also works with this really unique edge too – maybe a special sense of tuning, or maybe just his phrasing – all at a level that makes his performance here really stand out from a more traditional guitar trio session. The rest of the group really matches his energy in a fantastic way – Rudy Royston leaping into the fray on drums, and Nick Morrison providing a richness on bass – on titles that include "Irv's Nerve", "Inverso", "A Waltz & A Prayer", "Some Day", and "Victurus". 2 killers from The Bar-Kays – a heavy funk spectacular all the way through! First up is Gotta Groove – amazing work from the new version of The Bar-Kays – a group who reformed to become a combo as heavy as any of the best funky groups from Detroit, LA, or New York at the time! There's a style here that's a sweet Memphis distillation of ideas bubbling under in music by Sly Stone, Funkadelic, and others – taken to new territory here by a group that was already steeped in 60s soul instrumental sounds! Tracks include "In The Hole", "Funky Thang", "Grab This Thing", "Street Walker", "Humpin", and "Don't Stop Dancing To The Music (parts 1 & 2)". Black Rock is an album that's every bit as great as the title might imply – heavy guitar-based funk from the second version of The Bar-Kays – one that uses the new instrumental focus to push a groove that's much more black rock than before! There's still a bit of trumpet from the past, but the sound here is much heavier on the bottom – and really fuzzes up the guitar nicely at times to create a hipper sort of soul instrumental vibe! The rhythms are quite hip too – with echoes of the experiments in soul going on at Stax in the work of Isaac Hayes and others – and the album's miles away from the work that the group was laying down a few years before! Definitely one of the hardest-hitting Stax albums of the early 70s – and filled with great tracks like "You Don't Know Like I Know", "Dance To The Music", "Piece Of Your Peace", "Montego Bay", and "Baby I Love You". A really unusual soundtrack from the great John Barry – maybe not what you'd expect for a British film set in the 19th Century! A large part of the soundtrack have these great brooding orchestrations – the kinds of passages that Barry would often unfurl in a James Bond film when the big evil devices were being put into place, or when the lair of a villain was first exposed – all these wonderfully well-crafted tones in the orchestrations with an especially strong ear for the lower end of the spectrum. And then, the second half of the set moves into even ore unusual territory – songs that have maybe a touch of South African swing, but with a mod 60s style, and lots of electric guitar – a very startling change, but a groovy one too, and making for some wonderfully swinging numbers! Count BasieOn My Way & Shoutin Again – Count Basie Plays Music By Neal Hefti/Not Now I'll Tell You When ... CD
Verve/Roulette/American Jazz Classics (Spain), 1962. Used ... $6.99
On My Way & Shoutin Again is a wonderful album of 60s Basie – one that focuses on the writing and arranging talents of the great Neal Hefti! Hefti's one of our favorite soundtrack composers of the decade, but in the years before his film fame, he was a frequent partner of Basie – and this album marks one of their greatest collaborations together. The tunes are very much in the "loud, then soft, then loud" mode that Hefti pioneered with Basie's angular group of the 50s – but they've also got some of the warmer, more whimsical touches that Neal would explore more fully in his later soundtrack work too. The result is a classic Basie session, but with plenty of surprises – featuring a fresh batch of tunes that includes "Jump For Johnny", "Ducky Bumps", "Rose Bud", "Shanghaied", "Together Again", and "Eee Dee". Not Now I'll Tell You When is a great title for this classic Count Basie album – as it really gets at the tight, focused direction that makes Basie so great at this point in his career – his way of singling out each and every instrumentalist, and perfectly timing their performances! The sense of rhythm is what makes the Basie group so different from so many other large ensembles – not big band swing, not tonal modern, but this rootsy, soulful style at the bottom – even when the instrumentation is impeccable – that undeniable groove that makes a record like this swing from the start, then keep on going strongly, even when lots of colors and tones come into the mix. The whole lineup's great – and players include Frank Wess on flute, Frank Foster on tenor, Thad Jones on trumpet, and Freddie Green on guitar – and the album features a lot of sweet originals that really keep things interesting – including "The Daly Jump", "Not Now I'll Tell You When", "Rare Butterfly", "Back To The Apple", "Blue On Blue", and "Swingin At The Waldorf". ✨✧ Joe BataanSalsoul ... LP
Mericana/Salsoul, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.99 On November 11, 2022
A landmark album from Joe Bataan – so great, that it made the entire record company change its name! The record has Joe really bursting out after his seminal Latin Soul work of the late 60s – blending Latin rhythms and American soul into a whole new style of music – one that Joe called "Salsoul", because of it's mixture of salsa and soul! The blend is fantastic, a real milestone in the NuYorican scene – and handled perfectly by Joe on every cut! There's some massive Latin funk on here, including the tracks "Latin Strut" and "Aftershower Funk", plus some straighter Latin jazz, like "Sunny Gets Blue Mambo", and a great Latin Soul cut with English vocals called "Johnny". Beat Konducta (Madlib)Beat Konducta Vol 1 & 2 – Movie Scenes/Movie Scenes, The Sequel ... CD
Stones Throw, 2005. Used ... $9.99
The epic CD compilation of the ever prolific, ever satisfying Madlib's first 2 LPs as Beat Konducta – a instrumental song suite of beats for films that do not exist anywhere but the fevered mind of the genius beatcrafter! 'Lib's production work has always had a bit of a filmic groove, and this set collects and assembles the most cinematic of said beats into an (unsurprisingly) incredible whole. The soundscapes really kind of run the gamut of his hip hop styles – always soulful, and always funky, whether he's rocking a stone funk or an electro-modeled groove. Honestly, how much longer is it going to take for the mainstream to finally catch up with this genius!?! Collects tracks from the 2 separate volumes of vinyl: "The Comeback (Madlib)", "The Payback (Gotta)", "Face The Sun (Africa)", "Stax (Strings)", "Left On Silverlake (Ride)", "Offbeat (Grooves)", "Pyramids (Change)", "Eternal Broadcaster (Authentic)", "The Rock (Humps)", "Filthy (Untouched)", "Money Hugger (Gold Diggin'", "Black Mozart (Opus II)", "Snake Charmer (Heads Up)", "African Walk (Zamunda)", "The Forest (Greens)", "Outerlimit (Space Ho)" and more! Beaver & KrauseAll Good Men ... LP
Warner, 1972. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A higher concept album than usual for the team of Beaver & Krause – a record that still features plenty of cool moog and electronics by the pair, but which also has them teamed up with arranger Jimmie Haskell in a set of tunes that mixes older themes with original numbers! A fair bit of tracks here have vocals – either by Krause, or by female vocalists Cris Williamson, Adrienne Anderson, or Elisabeth Wilson – plus the "celestial choir" on a few tracks. There's a hearkening back here that's a bit confused at some moments – mixing Scott Joplin with the then-common apology to Native American mode – but things sound best on the original numbers, which have picked up a groove a bit more than before, and even have some nice warmer tones we really like. Titles include the spacey spinner "Between The Sun & The Rain", plus "Loves Of Col Evol", "Sweet Williams", "Bluebird Canyon Stomp", "Looking Back Now", "Child Of Morning Sun", and "All Good Men". ✨✧ Beaver & KrauseIn A Wild Sanctuary/Gandharva/All Good Men ... CD
Warner/Righteous (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 22.99
A trio of classics from this electronic duo – all brought together in a single set! First up is In A Wild Sanctuary – one of the best records ever from Beaver and Krause – largely because there's not so much noodling! This one features the pair on moog and organ, with help from Dave Grusin on piano, Milt Holland on percussion, Howard Roberts on guitar, and Bud Shank on reeds. The sound isn't jazz at all – but more a mix of spacey grooves and bubbling bits, with much more of a song-like structure than on other records. There's a few nice cuts here that almost hit a groove, and even when they don't, they still have a nice stripped down moogy sound that's very pleasing. Titles include "Spaced", "Salute To The Vanishing Bald Eagle", "People's Park", "Walking Green Algae Blues", and "Another Part Of Time". Gandharva is a cool mixture of rock and electronics – a perfect example of the Beaver & Krause team at their best! The ensemble on this one is bigger than usual, and the players includes jazz musicians like Mike Bloomfield, Gerry Mulligan, and Howard Roberts – but Beaver & Krause still play a lot of moog, though, and the songs are pretty groovy – although a little short. Side 2 was recorded at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Titles include "Soft/White", "Walkin By The River", "Walkin", "Nine Moons In Alaska", "Bright Shadows", and "Short Film For David". All Good Men is a higher concept album than usual for the team of Beaver & Krause – a record that still features plenty of cool moog and electronics by the pair, but which also has them teamed up with arranger Jimmie Haskell in a set of tunes that mixes older themes with original numbers! ✨✧ William BellNever Like This Before – The Complete 'Blue' Stax Singles 1961 to 1968 ... CD
Stax/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 22.99
William Bell was one of the first great soul singers to record for the legendary Stax Records in Memphis – an artist who really helped set the tone for deep soul singles to come from the likes of Otis Redding and Johnnie Taylor – and one whose early work is still some of the best he ever gave us! This well-done package brings together all of Bell's first 14 singles for the label, both a-sides and b-sides – standing together as a testament to all the greatness the singer brought to the fray right from the start – as Stax not only found a way to record him so much differently than he would have been handled in other spots, but also matured along with Bell to keep on creating fresh magic as the 60s moved on! As always with Ace/Kent, the presentation is wonderful – a detailed set of notes that matches the wonderful set list – which includes "Formula Of Love", "Just As I Thought", "Whatcha Gonna Do", "I Told You So", "Don't Stop Now", "Crying All By Myself", "I'll Show You", "Monkeying Around", "Ain't Got No Girl", "Every Man Oughta Have A Woman", "Never Like This Before", "Marching Off To War", "Soldier's Goodbye", "One Plus One", "Eloise", "You're Such A Sweet Thing", "Don't Make Something Out Of Nothing", and his great farewell to Otis Redding, "Tribute To A King". One of Louie's hippest records – a hard grooving set of tracks recorded live, with a swinging off-beat edge that's very different than some of his other straighter work. The players include Conte Candoli on trumpet, Joe Maini on alto, Willie Green on tenor, and Bill Perkins on baritone – as well as Gene Estes on vibes and "boo bams"(?) Most tracks are uptempo, often with a bit of a swinging crime jazz sound to them – and titles include "Cool", "Gumshoe", "Blitzen", "Doozy", and "The Diplomat Speaks". LP, Vinyl record album

Norgran, Early 50s. Very Good- ... $14.99 24.99
Driving Louis Bellson indeed – as Louie's drums set the tone for this session, and let Charlie Shavers and Seldon Powell echo out with some really great horn work! Tunes all have a nicely open-ended feeling that gets the players out of the context of their larger group histories and perfectly showcases the relaxed Verve style in the studio. Titles include "The Hawk Talks" and "Mambo a La Louis Bellson". The cast includes Sabu, Seldon Powell, and Nate Brown, and the cover's by David Stone Martin. LP, Vinyl record album

Benny SingsBeat Tape 2 ... LP
Stones Throw, 2022. New Copy ... $21.99 22.99
A bit more of a stripped-down set than other work that Benny Sings has given us in recent years – definitely a record with the vibe of the beat tape promised in the title – but one that still has some of the soulful elements that Benny's given us on other records too! The hip hop element is stronger here than usual, right down to the record's guests – who include Koreatown Oddity, Cola Boyy, Mocky, St Panther, Rae Khalil, and others – and Benny put the album together out of elements that weren't used in the final version of his album Music – but which still carry some of the soulful currents of that set. Titles include "Money & Guns", "Don't Look", "CGEOOL", "Green Grass", "Watch Me Heal", "Song 13", and "Mag Ik In Je Huid". LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry BergonziIntersecting Lines ... CD
Savant, 2014. Used ... $12.99
The title's a great one for this album – not just because tenorist Jerry Bergonzi always seems to have this forward-thinking, linear quality about his work – but also because his talents here intersect strongly with the alto sax of Dick Oatts! The pair really create some magic here – a balance between Bergonzi's bold tone and that raspier, more personal sound of Oatts – wrapped up beautifully with bass from Dave Santoro and drums from Andrea Michelutti – no piano at all, which only seems to further the fluid quality of the saxophones! There's a loose, free swing to the record – a quality that's still quite rhythmic, but which opens up without the piano and lets the saxophonists get very expressive – sparking stunning lines on original Bergonzi tracks that include "Creature Feature", "Tanzania", "Dig Oatts", "Itchy", "Arbonius Unt", and "Horton's Lament". Farroupilha/Far Out (UK), 1966. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
Very early work from Jose Roberto Bertrami – the keyboardist who rose to fame with Azymuth in the 70s, but who's working here in an all-acoustic bossa mode! In keeping with Bertrami's later talent for an unusual groove, the album's got a feel that's slightly different than the other bossa records of the time – styles that are sometimes less percussive, but still quite flowing – and which are graced by a depth of tone and color that's really wonderful! At some points, Bertrami almost hits modes that are straighter jazz – with traces of Horace Silver or other American players in the mix – even though the tracks are nearly all numbers by Brazilian composers. Nat BirchallSounds Almighty ... LP
Tradition Disc (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $36.99 49.99
A very different album than usual from the great tenorist Nat Birchall – a set that's no less soulful than his other records, but in a completely different way! The album's a collaboration with producer Al Breadwinner – and has this approach that feels like a lost Jamaican instrumental session from the start of the 70s – as if Nat's playing the role of saxophonist Tommy McCook over some nicely laidback Kingston-styled rhythms! Birchall solos on tenor on most tracks, but also blows a bit of melodica too – and even handles a bit of organ and percussion too – all swept up in a dubby mix handled by Breadwinner, who contributes drums, guitars, and keyboards. There's a bit of trumpet and trombone on the set too, plus baritone sax from Stally – and the quality of the record is excellent, every bit up to the range of the Jamaican legends listed as inspiration on the cover – a lineup that includes McCook, Lee Perry, Augustus Pablo, and Cedric Brooks. Titles include "In The Hills", "Ancient Wisdom", "Youth Iron Rock", "Freedom Style", "Amlak Dub", "Hail Don D Jr", and "Igziabeher". LP, Vinyl record album

A mighty feather in the cap of UK saxophonist Nat Birchall – and a set that really shows just how much he's opening up his sound in recent years! The set is a second meeting between Birchall and Al Breadwinner – and like the previous, both artists handle a wide range of instrumentation in a mode that matches 70s dub production styles with jazzy elements too – as Nat plays tenor, soprano, melodica, organ, piano, and percussion – and Al handles drums, organ, guitar, piano, and more percussion too! Breadwinner recorded and mixed the set – with the kind of mysterious vibe that almost recalls Lee Scratch Perry at Black Ark – and the duo are joined by Vin Gordon on trombone, David Fullwood on trumpet, and Stally on baritone sax. ✨✧ Aloe BlaccGood Things ... CD
Stones Throw, 2010. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Cinematic soul rooted in the rawer organ, drums and horns vibes that resonated deeply in records from north to south in the 70s – done with a lean, tight and head nodding groove no doubt informed by Aloe Blacc's own roots in hip hop – on his best album yet and one of best raw soul styled albums ever to come from our friends at Stones Throw! Good Things is a giant leap ahead of Shine Through, Aloe's previous full length on the label. We loved that record for its gritty, unique approach to funky soul, but, Good Things reaches for the heights of Aloe's heroes from Donny Hathaway to Marvin Gaye – and comes closer than we could have imagined! It's produced by the Truth & Soul team, with a timeless funk & soul vibe comparable to their work with the great Lee Fields. We have a feeling we'll still be listening to this album 10-15-20 years from now. Essential! Titles include the underground breakout "I Need A Dollar", an incredible cover of The Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale" (we must have dropped the needle on that 50 times in the first couple days we had it), "Green Lights", "Miss Fortune", "Good Things", "Loving You Is Killing Me", "Mama Hold My Hand", "Hey Brother" and more. A really unique project from Philippe Samiguel – recorded in Bamako, where Samiguel has worked as a producer for many years – during which time he's pulled together ideas from all sorts of different projects, and forged them into a new groove of his own! Samiguel's worked most famously with Samba Toure – who's here on the record alongside other artists who include Hugo Race, Mariam Kone, Mamadou Sidibe, and others – working on music that has roots in Malian blues, Tuareg guitar, and other west African modes – but which has a quality that's also very much all its own. Fantasy/Decision, 1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $6.99 17.98
Some of the sharpest, jazziest funk you'll ever hope to hear – a smoking collection of the legendary 70s work by The Blackbyrds on Fantasy Records! The group started as a jazz combo under Donald Byrd's supervision – right at a time when Byrd was making his own fantastic funky records in the 70s – but working for the Bay Area Fantasy label, they really took off into an amazing groove that was all their own – still informed by jazz, but free to open up to lots of funk and soul elements too – sometimes with vocals in the lead, sometimes more focus on the kinds of solos that always set them apart from all their contemporaries! The cuts have some wonderful keyboard work from a young Kevin Toney – who's gone onto a lot of fame over the years – and production on all cuts is either by Larry Mizell, Donald Byrd, or George Duke – key 70s jazz funk forces who keep things mighty tight in the studio! The package features work from all Blackbyrds albums of the 70s – including the Cornbread Earl & Me soundtrack, and the Night Grooves remix set – and the package features 25 titles that include "Enter In", "Party Land", "Do It Fluid", "Gut Level", "Summer Love", "I Need You", "The Baby", "Blackbyrds' Theme", "City Life", "Rock Creek Park", "Walking In Rhythm", "A Hot Day Today", "Wilford's Gone", "One Gun Salute", "Supernatural Feeling", "Mysterious Vibes", and "Soft & Easy". Miller's work is a great match for Blakey's vibe – a bit like that time when Cedar Walton brought both lyricism and swing to the Messengers – and we love Toussaint at this point in his career, as he plays with this raspy tone that always gets us, and holds onto us long after his solos are done! Blanchard and Harrison are as great as you'd expect – and titles include "Blue Night", "Two Of A Kind", "Blue Minor", and "Mr Combinated". CD

Paul Bley/Jimmy Giuffre/Steve SwallowLife Of A Trio – Sunday ... CD
Owl/Sunnyside, 1989. Used ... $16.99
With players like these, the life of a trio must be a great one – and the album's one part of a two-day recording session done by pianist Paul Bley, bassist Steve Swallow, and saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre! The "trio" tag is somewhat misleading at times – because the album's often a gathering of all three players in the studio, rather than a continuous collaborative effort. Some tracks have a single player, working alone – while others sneak in a duet, and others then follow a trio format – and the album's a great illustration of the sharp talents that all players still had at this point in their career! Giuffre's especially great – and works here on both clarinet and soprano sax – and given that Swallow had been a key part of Jim's trio in years back, many moments often sound like a revival of the more "out" Giuffre trio sides, with the addition of Bley's great tones on piano. This second volume features the "Sunday" session – with titles that include "Things", "Fallen Statue", "Play Ball", "Scrambled Legs", "Where Were We", "Mephisto", and "Tango Del Mar". CD

The group's format is plenty darn famous – adding a lot of horns to hip riffing grooves – but despite countless plays on oldies stations over the years, this initial album still has a power that's undeniable – a way of putting the whole thing together that really uses the best elements of the late 60s studio – handled with sweet production from James William Guerico that rivals his best work for Chicago! Even the lead vocals by David Clayton Thomas hold up nicely – and the set includes the classics "Variations On A Theme By Eric Satie", "And When I Die", "Smiling Phases", "More & More", "Spinning Wheel", and "You've Made Me So Very Happy". The moods here are anything but blue – as the group's got an upbeat, positive way of laying into a tune right from the start – as they take on a range of compositions by Charles Mingus, but all served up in a lean quartet formation that really helps transform the songs! Diego Rivera is often in the lead on tenor, and the rest of the group features Boris Kozlov on bass, Joe Strasser on drums, and Art Hirihara on piano – save for a few tracks where David Kikoski comes in on the keys! If you dig Mingus as much as us, you'll recognize most of the melodies – but the treatment is nicely fresh, and also not nearly as slavish as some other Mingus-related projects – really breathing new life into songs that include "Reincarnation Of A Lovebird", "Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress", "Nostalgia In Times Square", "Tonight At Noon", "Better Get It In Your Soul", and "Pithecathropus Erectus". The third solo album by Colin Blunstone – the magic-voiced singer who was lead vocalist of the Zombies, and went on to cut some god-like solo work in the early 70s! This album's a bit less sublime than Colin's first two – with tracks that veer a bit more towards the soft rock sound of the 70s, with some compressed AOR touches in place of the floating instrumentation of earlier albums – but it still sounds mighty nice to our ears, as Colin's voice is always a treat, and the record has a irrepressible charm in its optimistic presentation of some of the material. Essentially, if you dig Colin lots, you'll still want this one – as it's got more than a few nice moments – and is more of an evolution of his solo work than a divergence from it. Epic/4 Men With Beards, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 21.98
Amazing solo work from ex-Zombie Colin Blunstone – his first album after parting ways with his former group – and one of our favorite albums of all time! Blunstone's vocals were already amazing in The Zombies – especially near the end – but this set takes things even further, by blending his sublime lyrics with spare arrangements that often just feature simple string passages and warm piano parts – subtle accompaniment that leaves Colin strongly in the lead! The songs are wonderful – penned to recall the changes and issues of the year after the parting of the group – with plenty of help from old buddies Rod Argent and Chris White too. There's never been another record like this again, and there never will be – one of the true treasures of the greatest generation of music! Titles include "Let Me Come Closer To You", "I Can't Live Without You", "Smokey Day", and "Say You Don't Mind" – plus a fantastic cover of "Misty Roses", and the more rocking "She Loves The Way They Love Her". LP, Vinyl record album

BohannonGittin Off (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Dakar/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Tremendously tight grooves from Hamilton Bohannon – tunes that have this amazing way of wrapping together the bass, drums, and guitar – all in this fast-chugging style that's plenty funky all the way through! Bohannon was one of the most minimal of his 70s funk contemporaries – and has this way of really focusing in on one key rhythm, then rolling it out with incredible tightness – slowly changing things with some slight phase shifts in tone or timing, but always returning to the core of the tune. The approach is maybe even more striking here than on his previous records – and far grittier than on his later 70s work, too – and at some level, the vocals are almost thrown in as an afterthought, once Bo and the combo get things grooving! Titles include "Come Winter", "South Africa 76", "Feel Good At Midnight", "Gittin Off", and "I'm In Love". CD features two bonus tracks – single versions of "Gittin Off" and "Come Winter". CD

Lo BorgesIntimidade ... CD
Som Livre (Brazil), 2008. Used ... $18.99
Lo Borges is one of those artists who never seems to age in pictures – and his music has an equally timeless feel, still very much in the heartfelt, personal space he first forged with Milton Nascimento in the 70s! This album's got Borges in the company of some younger musicians, who perhaps bring a bit more spirited approach to the instrumentation – but the overall style is still filled with those breathy, spacious tones that he virtually helped invent – and which have come to be such a huge force in Brazilian music over the years. A number of cuts here are older numbers, done in fresher new versions – and titles include "Tudo Que Voce A Podia Ser", "Para Lennon E McCartney", "Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo", "O Trem Azul", "Clube Da Esquina", "Clube Da Esquina No 2", and "Dois Rios". Ruud BosSecret All-Star Band – Studio Sessions 1964 to 1969 (with bonus tracks) ... CD
NJA (Netherlands), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
Hard-swinging work from the pen of Dutch arranger/conductor Ruud Bos – a large group talent whose music here reminds us a lot of the Quincy Jones albums for Mercury in the early 60s! As with Quincy, there's a great blend of sophistication and soul – charts that are fully aware of all the modern changes in tone and color, but which also never fail to groove – and which feature standout solo performances throughout – delivered by a host of top-shelf talents who include Harry Verbeke on tenor, Piet Noordijk on alto, Cees Smal on trumpet, Cees Slinger on piano, and Jacques Schols on bass – all artists who've given us some great albums of their own over the years. Bos himself plays piano and vibes – and the set even features some early work from pianist Misha Mengelberg – on a set of tracks that include "Three Seconds", "Lutuli", "Sad Model", "Harry's Prize", "Gitanes", "ID", "Summernight", "Surprise To Bob", "Monk's Dream", and "On Green Dolphin Street". Joanne BrackeenSix Ate (CDr pressing) ... CD
Choice (UK), 1975. Used ... $11.99
Great work from that point in the 70s when pianist Joanne Brackeen was really taking off – working in bold, modern tones that really set her apart from most of her generation – further underscoring her unique role in jazz! Brackeen's freely creative on the keys – playing in ways that soar out freely at points, yet still always manage to swing – a really careful balance between avant ideas and a traditional jazz groove – possibly illustrated better on this record than any other session we can think of! But the rhythm players are possibly a big part of the album's success – because bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Billy Hart also always show that same sort of balance in their own work, and prove to be great company here for Brackeen. Titles include "Zulu", "C-Sri", "Circle", "Six Ate", "Nefertiti", and "Snooze". CD

Donald BrackettLong Slow Train – The Soul Music Of Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings ... Book
Backbeat Books, 2018. New Copy ... $5.99 24.99
The late Sharon Jones has easily been one of the most important voices in soul music of the past few decades – a great talent who left us all too soon, and who had to work very hard to reach the sort of fame she really deserved! Jones was always a very old school sort of soul singer – especially during the 90s moment when she finally got a chance to record – and her story is also a very old school one of struggle and challenge – then one of personal triumph, only to face later challenge again in the form of the cancer that finally took her life. The full story of Jones, the Dap-Kings, and the Daptone label are all recounted here – in a well-penned book that also includes a record-by-record set of details at the end, and a brief section of images in the middle. Softcover, 230 pages. Book

Charles BradleyBlack Velvet ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
The great Charles Bradley left this planet all too soon – and although we've got this final album of music to enjoy, it's only a partial consolation for Bradley's early departure! The set's maybe a bit like some of the albums of Otis Redding material that were issued after his passing – in that there's some cuts here that were singles, mixed with unissued songs that really show Bradley on top of his game – working strongly with the Menehan Street Band at a level that really has us wanting more! Some of these tunes have a sharply righteous vibe – maybe even more edge than before from Charles – which makes the whole thing not just a completely essential addition to his catalog, but also a way of pointing towards a future that might have been. Titles include "Can't Fight The Feeling", "Luv Jones", "I Feel A Change", "Black Velvet", "Fly Little Girl", "Victim Of Love (electric version)", "Slip Away", and "Heart Of Gold". Charles BradleyChanges (with download) ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
Jaw-dropping work from Charles Bradley – a stunning album that's maybe his best so far – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given the quality of his previous work! There's a focus and power here that really puts Charles on top – from the bold statement at the start of the record, to the range of expressive, emotive lyrics all the way through – given superb support in a range of deep soul and funky currents from the likes of Budos Band, Menehan Street Band, Gospel Queens, Saun & Starr, and Sha La Das! Yet none of these guests ever feel like they're sharing the spotlight with Charles – because, like the James Brown Show of the late 60s, all these super-strong talents are working in constellation around Bradley's majesty – a bold soul vision that's never burned this brightly before. Titles include "Ain't It A Sin", "Nobody But You", "Good To Be Back Home", "Things We Do For Love", "Crazy Love", and "Slow Love" – plus a cover of Black Sabbath's "Changes". LP, Vinyl record album
