S Tone IncBody & Soul ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 26.99
The funkiest album so far from Stefano Tirone – aka S Tone – a set that's got a much clubbier vibe than some of his other records, and a very strong influence both from vintage boogie and funky jazz! Tirone plays plenty of Wurlitzer and other keyboards on the set – and most tunes have jazzy energy at the core, as you'd expect from Schema Records – but also often open up in ways that are more deeply soulful than both the artist and label might make us expect! Toco sings on a few tracks, and steps aside for other singers who include Afra Kane, Laura Fedele, Gui Hargreaves, and Priscila Ribas – who work with Stefano to change up the colors from song to song – a but like in that old DJ/producer soundsystem mode. Titles include "Flying Away", "No Meio Do Samba", "In The Name Of Love", "Midnight Sun", "Move On", "Pra Voce", "Flying Away", and "Blow My Mind". CD

Verve, 1960. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Great large group material from Gerry Mulligan – and a record that definitely defines the sound of his famous Concert Jazz Band of the early 60s! The group features a four part sax section – headed by Mulligan, with other players that include Zoot Sims on tenor, Gene Allen on baritone, Gene Quill on alto, and Dick Meldonian on alto – and the set also features work by Nick Travis and Conte Candoli on trumpets, and Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone and trombone – shading in some nice colors to the group's tone-heavy approach! Titles include "Out Of This World", "Sweet & Slow", "Bweebida Bobbida", and "Manoir Des Mes Reves". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sonny StittSonny Stitt Blows The Blues ... LP
Verve, Late 50s. Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Stitt's classic Verve sides – a mellow late-night session done with a west coast soul jazz quartet that includes Lou Levy on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums. Tracks are short, but Stitt's tone is impeccable – and the album's a key one for moving him away from the Parker-driven bop sound, into a mellower, more open-ended style that really showed his growth as a player. Titles include "Hymnal Blues", "A Blues Offering", "Morning After Blues", "Home Free Blues", and "Blue Devil Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny HammondGears (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Milestone/BGP (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
One of our favorite albums of all time – and a record that just gets better and better the more we listen to it – and we've listened to it for years! Johnny "Hammond" Smith began his career as a simple soul jazz organist – but by the time of this album, he'd teamed up with the mighty Larry Mizell, the genius arranger/producer who'd breathed new life into the careers of Donald Byrd and Bobbi Humphrey. Mizell works with Hammond in the same way he does with other jazz artists – by taking a groove that works best with their solo style, and slowly layering other instrumentation and effects on top of it, so that when the solo kicks in, it's supported on waves and waves of funky sounds and soulful grooves. Mizell and his brother Fonce both play keyboards on the record, and the rest of the group includes monster fusion players like Harvey Mason, Roger Glenn, Hadley Caliman, and Jerry Peters. The real treat is Johnny, though – as his solos are heavenly, the best of his 70s work, stripped mean and lean, laid in at just the right points. Includes the breakbeat classic "Shifting Gears", the house classic "Los Conquistadores Chocolates", and funky numbers "Fantasy" and "Tell Me What To Do". This stunning version adds in some killer bonus tracks – 6 never-heard cuts from the Milestone vaults, including "Song For My Family", "Funky Native", "Detroit Rainbow", "Can't We Smile (alt)", and slow and fast versions of "A Child's Love". Blue Note, 2003. Used ... $5.99
Warmth and magic from Terence Blanchard – an album of simple beauty and timeless soul that's one of the best we've heard from him to date! The set features a group that includes tenor, guitar, piano, Fender Rhodes, and organ – and overall, it's got a soulful depth that reminds us of some of the hidden treasures in mid 80s soul jazz. Blanchard never tries to overstate his case, but plays within a world of confident righteousness that issues forth in waves of well-stated sound, color, and tone. Titles include "Fred Brown", "Passionate Courage", "On The Verge", "Innocence", "Transform", and "Footprints". CD

Jared GoldReemergence ... CD
Strikezone, 2018. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
Contemporary Hammond giant Jared Gold hardly needs to reemerge – as all of his albums in recent years have been completely top-shelf – and have really marked the musician as one of the best jazz organ talents around! Here, Gold certain reaffirms that reputation – working with amazing deftness that calls to mind the quick changes on the keys that Don Patterson brought to jazz organ work in the late 60s, mixed maybe with a bit of the soaring flow of Larry Young at the same time! The trio is super-tight too – and features the great Billy Hart on drums, and frequent partner Dave Stryker on guitar – plus guest trumpet work from Jeremy Pelt on three tracks, really giving the album a great layer of color with his tone. Titles include "Lookin For Another Pure Love", "One For John A", "She's Leaving Home", "Nomad", "Blues Connotation", "Reemergence", and "It Ain't Necessarily So". CD

Steeplechase (Denmark), 2021. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
John Hart has a crystal clear sense of tone on his guitar – one that almost hearkens back to some of the key jazz players of the postwar years, but which also has a nice edge too – coming across with a very personal, individual quality that's supported by a fair bit of original material on the date too! The group's a quartet – with David Wong on bass and Andy Watson on drums – and Gary Smulyan contributes some wonderful lines on baritone sax, deepening the sound past the tones of Hart's guitar – creating a really great counterbalance in tone! Titles include the originals "Power Of Three", "Right To Lie", "Bittersweet", "Checkmate", "Miniature", and "123 Blues". CD

Pepper AdamsJulian (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $16.99
Genius work from Pepper Adams – one of those players we sometimes forget about, then drop the needle on a record like this and fall in love with his music all over again! Adams blows baritone sax like nobody else – with a sensitivity that you'd normally hear on tenor, and a mix of modes that should have made him one of the most respected saxophonists of his generation – something that maybe didn't happen because of his unusual horn! Yet although big, there's nothing heavy about the way Pepper handles his horn – as you'll hear especially on the few ballads – and as usual for Adams, his choice of a group is great too – a sharp lineup with Walter Norris on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Makaya Ntshoko on drums. Titles include "Julian", "Ad Astra", "Jirge", "Spacemaker", and "Three & One". CD features two bonus tracks – "Time On My Hands" and "Lady Luck". CD

✨✧ Cannonball AdderleySophisticated Swing ... LP
EmArcy, 1957. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Forget the "sophisticated" – and concentrate on the "swing"! This early killer from Cannonball Adderley swings all the way – and it features a young Cannon blowing hard with a tight little combo that's kind of a precursor of his hit recordings on Riverside a few years later. Brother Nat's on cornet, and the rhythm's by Junior Mance on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – a really great trio who help give the set some of the soul jazz vibe that Adderley would bring to his later classics for Riverside. Cannonball's solos are choppy and free – a bit more unbridled than on some of his later work, very pinched in tone, which makes for a wonderfully soulful sound. Titles include "Miss Jackie's Delight", "Another Kind Of Soul", "Jeanie", "Spectacular", and "Eddie McLin". LP, Vinyl record album

Nat Adderley, Benny Bailey & Ake PerssonMusic Of Quincy Jones – As Played Nat Adderley, Benny Bailey, Ake Persson, Coleman Hawkins & Lucky Thompson ... CD
Lonehill (Spain), 1959/1960. Used ... $9.99
Early Quincy Jones jazz tunes – played by a legendary crew of musicians – led in separate spots by Benny Bailey, Nat Adderly, Coleman Hawkins, Lucky Thompson and Toots Thielemans! The tunes are from the Late 50s/early 60s era when young Quincy was being groomed to be another Duke Ellington (boy, if the world only knew!) The sessions were cut in Sweden with a rotation of Swedish players, plus American Joe Harris on drums on some tracks – and some of the work originally appeared on a Benny Bailey album for Argo, as well as on a Roy Haynes set for Mercury. The material is a batch of mostly clean-toned, bop-learned jazz, with some leisurely paced bluesy arrangements in spots. Tracks include "The Golden Touch", "Jones Beach", "Tiem Midnight Sun Never Sets", "Fallen Feathers", "Sister Sadie", "On The Sunny Side Of The Street", "That Old Black Magic", "I Remember You" and more. Antonio Adolfo & Carol SaboyaLa E Ca ... CD
Agra (Brazil), 2010. Used ... $14.99
Killer keyboards from Antonio Adolfo – one of the best records we've heard from the Brazilian jazzman in years, thanks in part to vocals from daughter Carol Saboya on a number of cuts! Adolfo leads off the set with a reworking of his classic "Cascavel" – a really wonderful tone that soars on a mix of acoustic and electric keys here – in a group that also features guitar, trombone, bass, and drums. The set mixes instrumental tunes with vocal numbers – and Saboya's singing brings in an even stronger jazz component – mostly English lyrics that nicely offset the Brazilian styles that ring out a bit more on the keyboard-led tracks. Titles include "Cascavel", "Toada Jazz/Night & Day", "So In Love", "Sabia", "Easy To Love", "Time After Time", "Night In Tunisia", and "Minor Chord". CD

Paramount/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy 4CD ... $36.99 51.99 About September 17, 2021
A British rock combo, but one with a distinctly jazzy feel – one that's often quite funky at times too! The core instrumentation is heavy on keyboards and guitar, set over some tightly rhythm bass and drums – often moving with some hip jazzy changes in the mix, and a nice sense of space between the notes that really helps things groove. Vocals are by Linda Hoyle, who again has a bit of a jazz-based approach – almost like Norma Winstone or Julie Driscoll at times in the way she soars out majestically over the rhythms, but somewhat more lyrically oriented overall. Titles include "I Am & So Are You", "Night Flight", "Three Sisters", "Mr Joy", and "I Wonder If I Care As Much". CD

A bright new groove on the Schema Records label – but one that features work from some of the company's real heavyweights in recent years – as the album was conceived and produced by Lucio Cantone (aka Invisible Session), and features tunes written by the funky Alex Puddu – all in a style that's heavy on the 70s funk influences that grace the music of both artists! The lineup's nice and jazzy, too – and features lots of tenor work from Timo Lassy, next to vibes, trumpet, guitar, and warm lines on both Hammond organ and Wurlitzer piano – all with a feel that's part funk, part soundtrack – yet served up in the best Schema way, which means that things go far past just being a retro rehash of the past! Titles include "Fire In Acapulco", "Heat In The City", "Everybody's Going Uptown", "Red Light District", and "The Crowd Pleaser". CD features the bonus tracks "Summer Of 75" and "The Game Of Love". Things are a bit more lean on the Specswizard side – lots of fantastic soulful tones and textures, mixed together with a spare sound that never gets in the way of the muted voice that delivers the rhymes – some biting commentary on his city and scene – on titles that include "Floyd", "The President", "Legend", "Pirate Tax", "Another", and "Empty". Riverside/OJC, 1957. Used ... $12.99
A teaming of two modern jazz talents from differing generations – one, pianist Joe Albany, rediscovered and re-recorded here after a number of years of obscurity during the 50s – the other, Warne Marsh, an emerging genius with one of the best tenor tones of his generation. The pair play together in an unusually spare setting – with no drums, and only bass work by Bob Whitlock for extra accompaniment. A real standout in the Riverside catalog – and recorded in LA, which makes one more distinction from the label's mostly New York output. Titles include "Daahoud", "Body & Soul", "I Love You", and "It's You Or No One" – and the record's a great one to hear Marsh in an unbridled setting. CD

Venus (Japan), 2004. New Copy (reissue)... $56.99
A long-overdue session of ballads from modern tenor giant Eric Alexander – a player we've always loved for his soaring, leaping lines on soul jazz sets – but who also has just the right tone to carry off an album of mellow tunes and ballads! Alexander's tone reminds us a lot of the Sonny Rollins sound of the mid 60s – that perfect, yet never too-polished style that Sonny was using when re-interpreting standards in a masterful demonstration of space and economy. The tracks on this set are a well-chosen lot – and include 2 classic Mal Waldron ballads, "Left Alone" and "Soul Eyes", and Alexander's own track "Gently". The group's a quartet, with Mike Le Donne on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and the session's recorded with impeccable sound, in the Venus Records mode. Tony Allen steps out onto his own – moving away from the Afrika 70 group who accompanied him on his first three solo albums – nicely cooking here into a whole new groove! The tracks are a bit shorter than the side-long jams of previous records, but no less funky – as Tony somehow manages to pack all the great bits he learned while working with Fela into a tighter space – coming up with the nicely offbeat grooves we've always loved him for – in a large lineup that's heavy on guitars, keyboards, and percussion – with some nice trumpet and baritone sax as well! There's vocals on most tracks – but mostly in the sing-song chorus mode – and titles include the classic "Ariya", plus "Road Safety", "Love Is A Natural Thing", and "No Discrimination". Da Mon/P-Vine (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $24.99
One of the best records ever recorded by the Ambiance II Fusion Ensemble – a group led by sax player Daoud Abubakar Balewa – and grooving here in a mix of soul jazz and electric fusion that sounds pretty darn sweet overall! Daoud's got a pinched style to his reed work, creating a tone that's almost sad – even in the more joyful moments of the record – and it blends well with the album's work on electric guitar and keyboards. There's a great jazzy groover on the album with a sweet Jazz Biznezz feel – "Fiesta", a lively Latinized number that has some sweet female vocals. Other tracks are a mix of styles, but hold together nicely – and titles include "There Is A Love", "Quasar", "The Clavicle", and "Baggage". CD

All the horn players are pretty wonderful too – and the set features work from Lew Soloff and Mike Mossman on trumpets, Steve Coleman on alto, Howard Johnson on baritone, Mike Brecker on tenor – given a nice kick by the trio Tommy Flanagan on piano, Dave Holland on bass, and Daniel Humair on drums – all working together perfectly as a unit, as if they've been that way for years – while still allowing all these great breakout solos along the way. A tight, old school set of jazz from the Dutch American All Stars – a group that features trumpeter John Marshall, pianist Hod O'Brien, bassist Jacques Schols, and drummer Peter Ypma – all playing here in very relaxed, familiar company! There's nothing too fancy or overdone with these tunes – and they spin out with that easygoing feel we love in any album that has O'Brien on piano – a mature mode of jazz that never tries too hard to overstate its case, but gets plenty of greatness done along the way. Marshall's horn has all the sparkling tones we love in other Blue Jack Jazz recordings, and the basswork from Schols really adds a nice undercurrent of soul to the set. AmnestyFree Your Mind – The 700 West Sessions ... CD
Now Again/Stones Throw, 1973. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
Rare funk from the Indy scene of the early 70s – the long-overdue release of material recorded by a really hard-jamming, horn-heavy combo! Amnesty have a sound that's awash in the best large group influences of the time – a bit of Earth Wind & Fire, a bit of Parliament/Funkadelic, but also a grittier, more guitar-based groove at times too – one that rumbles heavily at the bottom of the rhythms, with a sound that's like Norman Whitfield-era Motown, taken to much greater extremes! There's actually a lot more Detroit going on in the work than Indy – but the horns also have a jazzier, more open-ended quality too – not just parts penned for simple funky rhythms, but ones that show some influence from the more righteous side of the jazz spectrum. The material was all recorded on two dates in 1973 – but only issued here for the first time – and together, the tracks are a great example of a hip group from the underground, really letting loose with a great sense of freedom. There's some vocals on the record, but almost more of a focus on the instrumentation overall – and titles include "Can I Help You", "Love Fades", "Trouble Will Remain", "We've Come A Long Way", "Liberty", "Mister President", "Free Your Mind", "We Have Love", and "Lord Help Me". Decca, 1957. Very Good+ ... $34.99
An enigmatic set of modern jazz – recorded by the Amram-Barrow Quartet – an obscure group led by tenor saxophonist George Barrow and horn player David Amram, the latter of whom would go onto great fame in the 60s and 70s for his groundbreaking arrangements, soundtrack work, and world/jazz experiments! At this point, Amram's a young modernist with some very fresh ideas – and contributes some wonderful original tunes to the session with a moody east coast style that almost has traces of the Mingus camp – particularly the work of Jimmy Knepper and Pepper Adams. George Barrow's tone on the tenor is really tremendous – sharp and soulful, reminding us a bit of the freshness that Hank Mobley brought to some of his early sessions in the 50s, but with less of a hardbop fire. The rhythm in the group is by Arthur Phipps on bass and Al Harewood on drums (Amram plays a bit of piano as well) – and titles include "City Talk", "Someday Morning Will Come", "Somewhere Along The Way", "Phipps Quipps", "Lobo Nocho", and "I Love You". Maybe the most searing album we've ever heard from Antibalas – a set that's completely on fire from the very first note, both musically and politically – and which burns with an intensity that seems to blow away all their previous music! Make no mistake, we've always loved these guys – but this time around, there's an urgency that really grabs us – maybe because of the political climate in which the set was recorded, or maybe just because these guys always keep growing and maturing, where so many other similar combos are just content to stick in the same territory. The lead vocals by Duke Amayo are incredible – with a righteous power that demands to be heard – and the horns are more creative and colorful than ever, with some fantastic solos on the album's very long tracks. And of course, the grooves are great – that blend of riffing guitars and percussion that Antibalas have updated from 70s Afro Funk – on titles that include the three-part "Tombstown" suite, plus "Hook & Crook" and "Gold Rush". Stones Throw, 2020. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
A jazz set, but one that's in a very Stones Throw mode – as the music here mixes jazz elements with more contemporary production elements, and blends together the live and programmed in a mighty nice way! The group's a quartet, most of whom have played on other Stones Throw albums – and the lineup features twin keyboard work from Yuval Havkin (aka Rejoicer) and Nitai Hershkovits, plus bass from Yonatan Albalak and drums from Amir Bresler – the last of whom has a great rhythmic pulse that often defines the energy of the set! Titles include "Notre Damn", "Pulse 420", "Four Green Yellows", "Iris One", "Lake Vu", "The Pit & The Beggar", and "Yaki's Delight". LP, Vinyl record album

Decca (Japan), 1967. New Copy ... $22.99 About August 4, 2021
A surprising gem from Louis' later years – most famous for the title hit, but a great album all the way through! Louis is more of a singer than a musician on the set – and he's working with arrangements steeped in warmth and nostalgia – going for an instantly-ancient sound that brings out the best in Armstrong's sentimental tone. Next to the album's wonderful title track "What A Wonderful World", there's also lots of great obscure material – including "The Home Fire", "Hello Brother", "There Must Be A Way", "Fantastic That's You", and "The Sunshine Of Love". Ataraxia (Mort Garson)Unexplained – Electronic Musical Impressions of the Occult (orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
RCA/Sacred Bones, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 22.98
One of the spookiest albums we've ever heard from moog maestro Mort Garson – way darker and more complex than his Wozzard Of Id or moogy horoscope projects – with a feel that's much more like his legendary Black Mass album! Like that one, there's a fair current of supernatural running through the mix – an early use of the electronics to explore the darker corners of reality, served up with lots of cool 70s occult touches – in a way that's oddly more timeless than some of the later projects of this nature from the industrial generation. Garson's range of tones is wonderful – from fuzzy bassy bits, to sparkling keyboard lines, to lots of spacey sounds in between – and titles include "I Ching", "Tarot", "Deja Vu", "Seance", "Sorcerer", and "Astral Projection". Okka Disk, 2008. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... $10.99 19.99
An explosive meeting between Atomic and Ken Vandermark's School Days combo – proof that the Chicago/Scandinavia connection is stronger than ever! The double-length performance was recorded at Chicago's Green Mill nightclub, and it features an impressive lineup with Ken Vandermark on baritone sax and bass clarinet, Havard Wiik on piano, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Magnus Broo on trumpet, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, Fredrik Ljungkvist on tenor, Kjell Nordeson on vibes, and Paal Nilssen-Love – all working on very long, open tracks that almost have the feel of some of the best improvising orchestra work from years back. The vibes add a nicely chromatic quality to the work amidst some of the fiercer horn passages – and titles include "Deadline", "Irrational Ceremony", "Visitors", "Andersonville", "Dark Easter", "Fort Funston", "Bunuel At The Cocktail Party", and "Closing Stages". Aim (Australia), 2001. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
A recent bit of work from Roy Ayers – but still plenty darn great, and proof that the vibes master hasn't faltered at all over the years! The set was initially released briefly by Roy in 2001, but is getting its proper debut here – and has Ayers working in a mostly instrumental mode that layers his live work on vibes over beats and more programmed rhythm tracks. The sound is plenty darn soulful – sweetly jazzy, deeply soulful, and filled with those unusual colors, tones, and shades that instantly mark the work as Roy's own – a unique approach to vibes that few other players have ever been able to match! Titles include "Drome", "Ears", "Steppin", "Wave", "Thick & Thin", "Perfection", "Afro", "Smoke", "Bags", and "Calm". CD

Albert Ayler1964 Prophecy Revisited ... CD
Hat Hut (Switzerland), 1964. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
An expanded, remastered version of the album Prophecy – early work by Albert Ayler, recorded live in 1964 at the Cellar Cafe in New York, but not issued by ESP until years later, after his untimely early death. The performance is a trio outing – with Ayler's tenor alongside the bass of Gary Peacock and drums of Sunny Murray – all freely skirting around each other's space on the date, in a way that allows Ayler to take the bold lead with his sharp-toned solos, but which also allows for free interplay between the bass and percussion. Ayler's tone and wide swaths of sound are simply amazing – and titles include two variations on "Ghosts", plus "Spirits", "Prophecy", and "Wizard". Newly remastered version of the full concert – with 10 tracks in all! CD

Impulse/Third Man, 1968. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $20.99 25.99
One of the last albums that Albert Ayler ever recorded before his strange and mysterious early death – and one of his most memorable records as well! The record shows Ayler at the crossroads, filled with emotion and meaning, struggling to convey his message to a lager audience. At times, he takes a strange soul/jazz format to do so, and has tracks featuring backing by "the Soul Singers" – at others, he plays solo, with some of the most plaintive tones he ever laid down on wax! The record features an incredibly haunting "Message From Albert", plus the tracks "New Generation", "Sun Watcher", "New Ghosts", and "Free At Last". Completely fascinating, and a record that really makes you wonder what would have happened had he not left the planet so early! LP, Vinyl record album

Albert AylerSomething Different – The First Recordings Vol 1 & 2 ... CD
Go Bop (Germany), 1963. New Copy ... $10.99 16.99
Early work by avant saxophone genius Albert Ayler – and very very striking! The setting is very spare, with only bass and drums backing Ayler up – and the way the album is mixed, Ayler's solos dominate the tracks in a way that isn't always the case with some of the more group-driven later work. His tone is amazing even in this early date of 1962 – and he completely blows away the other two players on the set, drummer Sune Spangberg and bassist Torbjorn Hulcrantz. The set was first recorded by the small Swedish label Bird Notes, and it's the beginning of a longtime love affair that Swedish modernists had with Ayler's tone and playing – a love affair that runs up to the current avant garde that includes Mats Gustafsson. Includes a mindblowing reworking of "I'll Remember April", plus versions of "Rollins Tune", "Good Bait", "Moanin", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "Tune Up", and Ayler's own "Free". CD

✨✧ AzymuthFlame/Spectrum ... CD
Milestone, 1984/1985. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
Subtle magic from Azymuth – two mid 80s albums, back to back on a single CD! First up is Flame, a set that nicely lives up to its title – and which shows the strengths the trio picked up during their years in the US! The sound here is round and soulful – a great fusion of the group's roots in the 70s Brazilian fusion scene, and some of the smoother styles of the California one – never in a way that's too soft or commercial. As usual, there's a heavy emphasis on the keyboards of Jose Roberto Bertrami – who also sings a bit in a wordless, scatting sort of way. Flora Purim joins in on vocals on the cut "The Textile Factory" – and other titles include "Tamal Vista Boulevard", "Rapa Poeira", and "Flame (O Amor E Chama)". Spectrum is proof that Azymuth were one of the few groups who could keep things real at a time when most of their fusion contemporaries were sounding cloying and commercial! The album's got a well-rounded sound that really shows the group's roots in the 70s, and their wonderful evolution over the years – that keyboard-heavy sound that's always warm and soulful, and never too tinny or beat-heavy. Jose Roberto Bertrami's keys come across with a 70s warmth that most groups were lacking by this time – and the backing from Alex Maheiros on bass and Ivan Conti is always very subtle, and simple too – swirled up alongside the keyboards, and mixed in with a few occasional bits of guest instrumentation – including trumpet from Marcio Montarroyos on one track, and flugelhorn from Paulinho Olivera on a few more. Titles include versions of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On", Jobim's "Song Of The Jet", and Ivan Lins' "The Island", plus the cuts "Universal Prisoner", "Candomble", and "Areis". CD

Rare live work from Back Door – a Brit trio with plenty of connections to the blues rock scene of the time, but one who has a fair bit of jazzy undertones too! The live set's presented by Alexis Korner, who also plays some guest guitar on the record – but the core sounds come from the heady trio of Ron Aspery on saxes, Colin Hodgkinson on bass, and Tony Hicks on drums – with vocals from both Aspery and Hodgkinson too! The tracks arguably have a bit more bite than the group's recordings for Warner Brothers at the time – and the set's very well recorded, and pulled from the vaults of the BBC. Donald BaileySo In Love ... LP
Trio (Japan), 1978. Near Mint- ... $34.99
A fantastic record from jazz harmonica player Donald Bailey – maybe one of the few we've ever seen with his name in the lead, and a set that shows that he can easily rival some of the greats on his instrument at the time! The vibe of the set is a bit like some of the best jazz dates from Toots Thielemans – mellow accompaniment from a Japanese group that features Hideo Ichikawa on piano, Yoshio Ikeda on bass, and Takaki Nishikawa on drums – plus guest tenor from Hideyuki Kikuchi on two tracks! Yet throughout it all, the round, robust sound of Bailey on the harmonica is in the lead – blowing with a strong sense of tone, and an imaginative power that shows how he, like Toots, can really match the energy of a saxophonist in sense of solo and rhythm. Riverside, 1959. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A record that hides a bit under its title and cover – looking like a songbook session, and without Chet Baker's dreamy face on the front – but one that stands every bit as strongly with Baker's other late 50s sessions for Riverside, and done with an equally nice set of New York elements in the mix! The lineup is nicely unusual for a Chet Baker date – Herbie Mann on flute and tenor, Zoot Sims on alto and tenor, Pepper Adams on baritone, and even some piano from Bill Evans – and even though the tunes are all familiar Lerner & Loewe standards, they really come alive in the handling of these top shelf artists. Titles include "Show Me", "I Talk To The Trees", "On The Street Where You Live", "The Heather On The Hill", "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face", and "Almost Like Being In Love". Jalen Baker is a vibist, and he gets big props in the notes from Warren Wolf – which means a lot to us, as Wolf is one of our favorite contemporary players on the instrument! But it also looks like Jalen might be giving him a run for his money – as the young musician is also a hell of a composer and a leader too – working here in a setting that mixes his richly chromatic tones with a well-chosen blend of instrumentation – familiar trumpet, bass, and drums – blended with just the right use of light strings – never in a sleepy way, but just kind of cascading around the bolder, rhythmic elements of the music, and giving the whole thing this sense of spirit that's really wonderful. All titles are original, and tunes include "Don't Shoot", "So Help Me God", "Healing", "We Regret To Inform You", and "Obey/Disobey". CD

Baker Hansen & John Pal InderbergLive I Oslo – Baker Hansen Speler Chet Baker Sin Musikk Pa Norsk ... CD
Jazzland (Norway), 2021. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
That's a young Chet Baker on the cover of the record, and the set's a really beautiful experiment based on the music that Chet recorded back in the 50s – a reworking of some of the songs he sung and made his own, turned into versions with lyrics in Norwegian, and instrumentation that nicely changes things up! Don't worry, there's still a trumpeter in the group – Thomas Husmo Litleskare does a great job in that role – but John Pal Inderberg brings in some excellent baritone, crafting these warm solos that are a surprisingly great match for the Baker-spirited trumpet – in a group that also featuers Kjetil Jerve on piano, Stian Andreas Egeland Andersen on bass, and Tore Flatjord on drums. Vocals are by Sigurd Rotvik Tunsetveit – and despite all the strange language in place, you'll find plenty to love here if you're as in love with the classic Chet Baker spirit as much as us! Titles include new versions of "Let's Get Lost", "How Deep Is The Ocean", "You Don't Know What Love Is", "There Will Never Be Another You", and "Everything Happens To Me". CD

Volt/Craft, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Amazing work from the new version of The Bar-Kays – a group who reformed to become a combo as heavy as any of the best funky groups from Detroit, LA, or New York at the time! There's a style here that's a sweet Memphis distillation of ideas bubbling under in music by Sly Stone, Funkadelic, and others – taken to new territory here by a group that was already steeped in 60s soul instrumental sounds! The cuts show a great ear for simple hooks and playful instrumental twists and turns – still with a bit of the trumpet used on Bar-Kays work of the past, but more in a groove that lets the guitar step out nicely with psychedelic soul undercurrents! Tracks include "In The Hole", "Funky Thang", "Grab This Thing", "Street Walker", "Humpin", and "Don't Stop Dancing To The Music (parts 1 & 2)". LP, Vinyl record album

A slightly more aggressive trio session than usual for Kenny Barron – still done with that round, warm tone on the keys that we love so much – but hitting the tracks with a stronger punch that's a bit unusual, and which might be the result of using Dave Holland and Daniel Humair as part of the trio! All but one of the tunes on the set are original numbers, and there's a mix of Monkish and modern modes sitting next to some more traditional Barron approaches to the piano. ✨✧ Gary BartzI've Known Rivers & Other Bodies (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Prestige (Japan), 1973. Used Gatefold ... $49.99
Really wonderful stuff – and one of Gary Bartz's greatest albums ever! This double-length live set was recorded around the time of his NTU Troup albums for Milestone – but it's a bit more straightforward than those sides, going back towards a searching soul jazz sound, with some slight touches of electric funk. The group features Hubert Eaves on electric and acoustic keyboards, Stafford James on acoustic and electric bass, and Howard King on drums – and the wonderful bass work of James really creates some great platforms for Bartz and Eaves to stretch out on long long solos. Gary vocalizes a bit on a few tracks – almost in the style of Andy Bey on his NTU albums – and the set list includes "Uhuru Sasa", "Jujuman", "Bertha Baptist", "The Warrior's Song", "Mama's Soul", "Sifa Zote", "I've Known Rivers", "Don't Fight That Feeling", and "Peace & Love". Gary Bartz NTU TroopHarlem Bush Music – Taifa/Uhuru ... CD
Milestone, 1970/1971. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
A landmark set of recordings – both of Gary Bartz's Harlem Bush Music albums, back to back on one CD! After a few years as a modern-tinged soul jazz saxophonist, Bartz broke strongly into the 70s with this pair of sessions – working in a mode that brought together rhythmic percussion, funky bass, and some incredibly righteous vocals from singer Andy Bey! Bey's presence on the record really marks them as a departure for Bartz – as it's the first time that Bartz used vocals on his recordings, in a style that was neither straight jazz, nor sellout soul – but rather a progressive approach that set a whole new tenor for the voice in jazz! Gary plays both soprano and alto sax – blowing in a rhythmic mode that's a perfect match for the chunky rhythms of the tunes – and which seems to often take on the same tone as Andy Bey's unique approach to the lyrics. There's an earthy, organic, almost tribalistic quality to some of the tracks – and titles include "Rise", "People Dance", "Drinking Song", "Taifa", "Parted", "Uhuru Sasa", "Vietcong", "Celestial Blues", and "The Planets". Joe Bataan is alive and well – and to our ears, the king of Latin Soul is sounding better than he has in decades! This tasty little set really takes us back to Joe's classic work for Fania – but it's also got a slightly different twist – one that shows a new younger appreciation of the funk side of Joe's work that wasn't always able to come to the forefront in earlier years. Joe recorded the album at the Daptone Studios in New York – so the sound of the set is spot-on all the way through – perfectly recorded to bring out the soul in Joe's music, and handled with some great touches that make the instrumentation as wonderful as Joe's classic-styled vocals! And even more than that, there's also a heck of great new songs on the set – tunes that follow very strongly in the spirit of Joe's older classics, but which have a freshness that makes the album a totally essential part of Joe's catalog. Capitol, 2004. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $31.99 35.99
A masterful later album by the Beastie Boys – who always preferred to put out a great record every five or six years, than a sub par album every 2 or 3! All these years after Paul's Boutique, when the world of difficult, expensive sample clearance could've kill the layers of pop pastiche sound bites that made P's B such a brilliant statement, the soul and funk samples are still piled on in abundance on this one (albeit with a more electro studio built backdrop), as are the block rockin' party rhymes – even if the tone is serious and strident in spots. There are no attempts at live funky jazz or punk rock this time – this may be the Beasties' most classifiable hip hop album in decades. Tracks include the great throwback single "Ch-Check It Out", "Right Right Now Now", "3 The Hard Way", "It Takes Time To Build", "Rhyme The Rhyme Well", "Hey F**k You", "Triple Trouble", "Oh Word?", "That's It That's All", "All Lifestyles", "Shazam!", "An Open Letter To NYC" and more. Nonesuch, 1968. Near Mint- 2LPs + Book ... $24.99
One of the most electronic albums that Beaver & Krause ever recorded – a set that was issued as a Guide To Electronic Music, but which has a way more to offer than just a simple demonstration record! Unlike most other B&K albums, which can feature a bit of rock mixing in with the moog, this one is almost entirely analogue electronics – often played in a stark, spare way that has plenty of spooky tones – but also works beautifully together in a mode that's similar to other experimental electronic sets from the time, such as Morton Subotnick's contemporaneous records for Nonesuch. The tracks are very short, with concentrated bursts of sound, and have titles like "White Sound", "Ribbon Controller", and "Sawtooth". Comes in a box with a very cool book that explains a lot of different properties of electronic music. Great for sample-heads or for junior knob twiddlers. 2 LPs strong! LP, Vinyl record album

A really cool take on traditions of Guadeloupean musical traditions – served up in a style that echoes some of the blends of jazz and island elements from earlier generations! The group here is a trio – with the great Edmondy Krater on ka, djembe, and percussion – all instruments that are often used in ways that are as melodic as they are rhythmic – and blended with more percussion from Olivier Maurieres and harp from Anne Bacqueyrisse, the last of which is clearly a different variation on the instrument than the more familiar European mode – used to accent some great elements in the percussion with great colors and tones alongside the grooves. There's vocals on a number of tracks, but the percussion/harp interplay is key – and titles include "Natibel", "Mazunga", "Gwadeloup", "Armelance", "Metamorphoses", and "Arawak E Karayib". The album's got some very tasty Varitone work by Pete Christlieb – blowing over the top of the group's vamping, chomping charts with a flatly soulful tone on the best numbers. Norgran, Early 50s. Very Good ... $33.99
Driving Louis Bellson indeed – as Louie's drums set the tone for this session, and let Charlie Shavers and Seldon Powell echo out with some really great horn work! Tunes all have a nicely open-ended feeling that gets the players out of the context of their larger group histories and perfectly showcases the relaxed Verve style in the studio. Titles include "The Hawk Talks" and "Mambo a La Louis Bellson". The cast includes Sabu, Seldon Powell, and Nate Brown, and the cover's by David Stone Martin. LP, Vinyl record album

Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $13.99
There's nothing silent here – as the album's one of the most biting 70s albums we've heard from vibist Karl Berger – an album that's relatively free overall, and which features some fantastic work by Masahiko Sato on piano! Sato really seems to bring out the darker tones in Berger's vibes, and his sometimes use of marimbas – really wonderful hues that are especially compelling when the whole group takes off for a long free run of improvisation! Other players include Allen Blairman on drums and Adelhard Roidinger on bass – and titles include "From Now On", "With Silence", "Get Up", and "The Only One Of Its Kind In My Garden". CD

Jerry BergonziSpotlight On Standards ... CD
Savant, 2016. Used ... $11.99
The tunes may be standards, by tenorist Jerry Bergonzi makes them into something else entirely with his performance here – taking these really open-ended runs on the familiar numbers, in these beautiful waves of soul and sound with Hammond organist Renato Chicco! The two work together at a sublime level – as Bergonzi's horn has those raspy tones that we love so much, and almost a Joe Henderson-like balance between modernist impulses and a soulful core. Chicco's amazing – almost Don Patterson-like in his fluidity – handling both the keys and the basslines, and getting some spacious rhythms from drummer Andrea Michelutti. The whole thing's great – maybe one of Jerry's most compelling records in years – and titles include "Bi Solar", "Witchcraft", "First Lady", "Dancing In The Dark", "Out Of Nowhere", "Stella By Starlight", and "Blue Cube". Beautiful recent work from Andy Bey – a singer who seems to get better and better as the years go on! As the title might indicate, the set's a collection of classic American songs – 20th century standards and evergreens, done by Bey in his wonderfully dusky style of singing – and supported by small group backing that includes piano from Geri Allen, tenor and flute from Frank Wess, trombone from Steve Davis, and trumpet from Vernell Garrett. The backings have some nice lush tones at some moments, and fall off into sparer moods at others – allowing a lot of space for Andy's wonderful voice to roll in! Ancient Archive Of Sound (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $36.99 39.99
A mighty feather in the cap of UK saxophonist Nat Birchall – and a set that really shows just how much he's opening up his sound in recent years! The set is a second meeting between Birchall and Al Breadwinner – and like the previous, both artists handle a wide range of instrumentation in a mode that matches 70s dub production styles with jazzy elements too – as Nat plays tenor, soprano, melodica, organ, piano, and percussion – and Al handles drums, organ, guitar, piano, and more percussion too! Breadwinner recorded and mixed the set – with the kind of mysterious vibe that almost recalls Lee Scratch Perry at Black Ark – and the duo are joined by Vin Gordon on trombone, David Fullwood on trumpet, and Stally on baritone sax. Arthur BlytheDa Da/Basic Blythe ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), 1986/1988. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
A pair of 80s albums from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – back to back in a single set! Da Da is a set that mixes some of the sharper edges of Blythe's earlier records with a few more contemporary touches – but always at a level that still has the reedman standing far from the mainstream! The core group here features Olu Dara on trumpet, Cecil McBee on bass, John Hicks on piano, and Bobby Battle on drums – and on the acoustic tracks, there's some great energy between them that soars with a soulful spirit birthed in the loft jazz years, maybe swung a bit straighter than before. A few other tunes add in some extra elements – an electric bass on one number, some light strings on another – but the core of the album still has a magnificent focus on that tone that Blythe had only perfected even more on records like this, especially on the more laidback numbers, which come as a real surprise, and reflect a ballad style we might not have guessed in the early days. Titles include "Odessa", "Esquinas", "After Paris", "Crescent", and "Break Time". Next up is Basic Blythe – not exactly basic work from Arthur Blythe, as the set features an added string ensemble too – but a record that certainly has the saxophonist really hitting a whole new level of genius! There's a great core group here – with John Hicks on piano, Anthony Cox on bass, and Bobby Battle on drums – and the strings are added in around the edges, never getting to much in the way of the combo energy, but also fleshing out the sound with this beautiful richness that only seems to enhance the sharp tone of Arthur's alto sax! The arrangements are great, too – hardly the usual "with strings" material, and instead very creative – with this mix of soul and sophistication that reminds us a bit of the Bill Lee scores for early Spike Lee films, but even longer and with the key addition of Blythe in the lead. Titles include "Lenox Avenue Breakdown", "Faceless Woman", "Ruby My Dear", "Heart To Heart", and "As Of Yet". CD

Hard-swinging work from the pen of Dutch arranger/conductor Ruud Bos – a large group talent whose music here reminds us a lot of the Quincy Jones albums for Mercury in the early 60s! As with Quincy, there's a great blend of sophistication and soul – charts that are fully aware of all the modern changes in tone and color, but which also never fail to groove – and which feature standout solo performances throughout – delivered by a host of top-shelf talents who include Harry Verbeke on tenor, Piet Noordijk on alto, Cees Smal on trumpet, Cees Slinger on piano, and Jacques Schols on bass – all artists who've given us some great albums of their own over the years. Bos himself plays piano and vibes – and the set even features some early work from pianist Misha Mengelberg – on a set of tracks that include "Three Seconds", "Lutuli", "Sad Model", "Harry's Prize", "Gitanes", "ID", "Summernight", "Surprise To Bob", "Monk's Dream", and "On Green Dolphin Street". An obscure bossa combo, but a great one too – featured here on a rare 60s album for the Equipe label, which was also home to some of Dedoato's earliest work! The feel here is a bit like some of those better-known records – with organ lines stepping out over some lively samba and bossa rhythms, all with a very groovy jazz approach! But Bossa 4 also seem to have a cool guitarist in the mix – who hits these great tones that are almost surf-like in the way they echo, but played with a lot more open space than any surf guitar – more a sound that's used to balance out the organ and tight rhythms on the grooves. Titles include "Bus Stop", "Uni Du Ni Te", "Coracao De Papel", "Eu So Quero Ver", "Voce Fala Demais", and a few sweet pot-pourri tracks too. CD

The great Charles Bradley left this planet all too soon – and although we've got this final album of music to enjoy, it's only a partial consolation for Bradley's early departure! The set's maybe a bit like some of the albums of Otis Redding material that were issued after his passing – in that there's some cuts here that were singles, mixed with unissued songs that really show Bradley on top of his game – working strongly with the Menehan Street Band at a level that really has us wanting more! Some of these tunes have a sharply righteous vibe – maybe even more edge than before from Charles – which makes the whole thing not just a completely essential addition to his catalog, but also a way of pointing towards a future that might have been. Jaw-dropping work from Charles Bradley – a stunning album that's maybe his best so far – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given the quality of his previous work! There's a focus and power here that really puts Charles on top – from the bold statement at the start of the record, to the range of expressive, emotive lyrics all the way through – given superb support in a range of deep soul and funky currents from the likes of Budos Band, Menehan Street Band, Gospel Queens, Saun & Starr, and Sha La Das! Yet none of these guests ever feel like they're sharing the spotlight with Charles – because, like the James Brown Show of the late 60s, all these super-strong talents are working in constellation around Bradley's majesty – a bold soul vision that's never burned this brightly before. Dunham/Daptone, 2013. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
Damn amazing work from Charles Bradley – an instant soul classic for all generations, as you'll hear from the very first note! Not only are Bradley's vocals incredible – the kind of once-in-a-long-time approach he brought to his debut – but the backings and production are completely sublime too – magical music from the Menahan Street Band, who sound here like some lost combo from 60s Memphis, but without any of the hoke that reference might imply – instead that really unique approach that you'd only find on one of your few favorite vintage soul albums – maybe Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers, or Jesse James on his 60s album for 20th Century! Yet the sound here isn't just vintage for vintage sake, either – as there's an intensity that's very present, contemporary, and urgent – a sound that doesn't die – and which just gets better and better with each new listen. Tremendous stuff – even from the Daptone universe we've been loving for years and years – with titles that include "Strictly Reserved For You", "You Put The Flame On It", "Dusty Blue", "Love Bug Blues", "Hurricane", "Through The Storm", "Confusion", and "Where Do We Go From Here". A wonderful early album from Victor Assis Brasil – one of Brazil's greatest saxophone players of the 60s and 70s, and an artist with a keen post-Coltrane approach to his work! The album's awash in modally grooving numbers that would have made Coltrane proud – soulfully swinging tunes that bounce along on tight piano, bass, and percussion – as Victor spins out some lean and exploratory lines on alto sax. The album features some nice work by a young Claudio Roditi, and the lineup shifts a bit from track to track – but Brasil's incredible tone and solo work on the alto sax really holds the whole set together, and offers up a new surprise at each track! One of the more obscure Anthony Braxton albums of the first decade of the century – but also one that's completely well worth seeking out, as it's got this warm spirit of collaborative creation that takes us back to some of his best moments of the 70s and 80s! The record features duets with trumpeter John McDonough – a Braxton fanatic who's clearly a great partner for the saxophonist to spin out ideas – trumpet notes both muted and muted, mixing with Braxton's work on alto, baritone, sopranino, and soprano sax – each with a very different sense of interplay from track to track! The album features two long, very out numbers – "Improvisation" and "Composition 168 + (103)" – then moves into a sublime sonic exercise on "Massive Breath Attack", offers a surprising reading of "Hail To The Spirit Of Liberty", and also includes the tunes "Finnish Line" and "Schizoid". ✨✧ Bob BrookmeyerBob Brookmeyer & Friends ... LP
Columbia, 1965. Very Good+ ... $16.99
Sound, space, tone, and color – a tremendous effort from trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, and a record with a really unique feel! The album features a wonderful group that includes Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Stan Getz on tenor, Gary Burton on vibes, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – all coming together in a way that's extremely equally-weighted – with less of Brookmeyer as the leader, than as a warm friend, gathering together a few key players in the studio. Given that Getz worked with Brookmeyer back in the early 50s, and had Burton in his group at the time, the album's always a link between both sides of a decade in Stan's career – but with the presence of the modernists on the rhythm team, there's a sound here that's much more unique – one that has a place for Stan's wonderful tone, and Brookmeyer's airy phrasing – but which also drives along in a rhythmically pulsing mode that almost puts Burton's vibes at the top of the set on some numbers. There's a change in mood from tune to tune that gives the record a remarkable depth, but without sounding schizophrenic – and titles include "Bracket", " Wrinkle Time", "Jive Hoot", "Skylark", "Sometime Ago", and "Who Cares". One of the greatest releases ever from the Okka Disk label – a legendary set that stands as a great testament to the global improvising scene that exploded in Chicago during the 90s! Back in the early years of FMP, nobody would have thought to use the name "Peter Brotzmann" and "Chicago" in the same context – but by the time of these recordings, the legendary reedman had been spending quite a bit of time in the Windy City – working strongly alongside that decade's fresh generation of improvisers, at a level that also helped Brotzmann discover new energy in his music too! The lineup here is great – both octet and tentet groups that operate in an improvising orchestra tradition – with players that include Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Mars Williams on tenor and alto, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Mats Gustafsson on baritone and fluteophone, Joe McPhee on pocket cornet and valve trombone, Fred Lonberg Holm on cello, Kent Kessler on bass, Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion, and Brotzmann himself on tenor, clarinet, and tarogato. A study in brown, and a study in hardbop too – a seminal album of 50s jazz that forever went on to set the tone for the music! The album was one of a few that trumpeter Clifford Brown cut as his star was strongly rising, before a tragic early accident took his life – and it's a masterpiece of bop modernism, done with the co-leadership of drummer Max Roach – with an equally well-matched group that includes Harold Land on tenor, George Morrow on bass, and Bud Powell's brother Richie on piano. Tracks are short, and played with great boppish fire and fury – virtually the blueprint for the hardbop sound of the 50s, and one of the strongest expressions from this important, but short-lived group. A real smoker of a session – Rusty Bryant's first comeback album of the jazz funk years, done in a mode that virtually set the tone for other Prestige sessions of the time! Rusty's working here on alto sax, in a mode that's clearly inspired by the Lou Donaldson sessions of the time on Blue Note – but done with a freer, looser, more rolling sort of vibe. Organist Sonny Phillips really makes the set great with some fluid work on the Hammond that matches Bryant's groove – and guitarist Grant Green's also in the group, setting up some great single note lines that punctuate the tunes nicely. A key factor is also bassist Bob Bushnell, who plays Fender bass on the record (an element missing from the Donaldson sound), and gives the record a key bit of motion at the bottom! A great third album from Staten Island instrumental funk titans The Budos Band – who've brought eclectic inspiration all along and have always colored from a much broader palette of styles than most of their peers – going even further this time out and delivering their best yet! The Daptone House Of Soul blueprint is a big part of the recipe, as it should be. Classic funky soul grit holds it all together and each cut has an unshakable groove, but with that in full effect, the group is free to explore. The Budos horns are as impeccable and communicative as ever, with brass that ranges from classic stateside funk and Afro influences. The percussion (bongos, clave, cowbell and more) is just as broadly thought out and tightly delivered, snakey bass lines, flute and the sometimes secret weapon on Budos Band III, the electric organ – which brings a bit of a garage psych/funk rock vibe. Truly exceptional work from the one of the best bands of their generation! Some of the deepest, heaviest work we've ever heard from the Budos Band – as you might guess from the album's dark title and cover! There's a bit of a heavy metal look to the package, but the sounds within are still the righteous funk we've always loved from Budos – yet are also inflected with a very slight bit of trippy elements this time around – a touch of fuzz on the guitar, or cosmic echoes on the keyboards – which really balance out strongly with the group's bold horns and razor-sharp drums! The slight changes make for a more sinister sound than before, and show that these guys continue to be one of the most forward-thinking funk bands around – never content to just rest on the laurels of their great musicianship, but always leaping ahead with new ideas. This time around, the guitars seem even sharper than ever – full and fuzzy, and maybe even touched with some elements that might have made some of the bigger 70s groups weep – almost as if the BB are trying to create a whole new generation of prog funk in the process! All the other elements are still in place – lots of heavy drums, rumbling bass, and some mighty nice horns – but when mixed with the strength of the guitars, even the horns feel as if they're hitting some new currents – like when artists like Dick Heckstall Smith or Alan Skidmore might jam along with a funky guitar riff from way back. Titles include "The Enchanter", "Spider Web (part 1)", "Old Engine Oil", "Veil Of Shadows", "Arcane Rambler", "Valley Of The Damned", and "Rumble From The Void". LP, Vinyl record album

Buffalo SpringfieldRetrospective – The Best Of Buffalo Springfield ... CD
Atco, 1969. Used ... $5.99
A seminal collection of work from Buffalo Springfield – a group with a short-lived existence on the LA scene, but an impact that shaped the sound of mainstream rock for many years to come! That effect is no surprise – given that the lineup features a young Neil Young, Stephen Stills, and Richie Furay – moving from folk influences into trippier, headier territory – and paving the way for both classic and country rock to come! Here at the start, things are nice and lean – well-penned tunes that pack a heck of a lot into a very short space – given key production help from Jack Nitzsche, Brian Stone, Jim Messina, and even Neil Young himself. Titles include "For What It's Worth", "Mr Soul", "Broken Arrow", "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Win", "Expecting To Fly", "Go & Say Goodbye", "On The Way Home", "Sit Down I Think I Love You", and "Kind Woman". Kenny BurrellKenny Burrell At The Five Spot Cafe ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1959. New Copy ... $18.99
One of our favorite albums ever from the great guitarist Kenny Burrell – a smoking live session, and one that's got a bit more of an edge than some of his other records from the time! Kenny's guitar still has that impeccable tone throughout – but it's also matched by some wonderful tenor from the great Tina Brooks – making one of his few key Blue Note appearances here – in a massively cooking group that also features some piano from Bobby Timmons on three of the album's five tracks (Roland Hanna plays on the two others) – plus drums from Art Blakey, and bass from Ben Tucker – a pair wo work together wonderfully to create some really great grooves. Kenny himself seems to pick up great energy in the setting – and titles include "Lady Be Good", "Birk's Works", "36-23-36", and "Hallelujah". CD

Abraham Burton & Lucian BanBlack Salt ... CD
Sunnyside, 2021. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
A fantastic setting for the tenor of Abraham Burton – long-flowing tracks recorded live in a very open space, with Lucian Ban on piano, really pushing Burton to heights that we've never heard before! There's one track on the set dedicated to Pharoah Sanders – and Burton really seems to have a raspier tone in his horn than usual – this nice edge that really cuts alongside some of the piano lines of Ban – piano that's often relatively free, but very rhythmic too – nice structures of sound that seem to allow Abraham even more space to explore. Titles include "Blacksalt", "Dad", "Opening/Freeflow", "Belize", "Not That Kind Of Blues", and "Untold". CD

Donald ByrdSlow Drag (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1968. New Copy ... $8.99 11.98
Beautiful stuff – and one of the best Donald Byrd albums of the 60s! The album is a killer all the way through – recorded with a group that Byrd maintained for 2 years, one that featured Sonny Red on alto sax, Cedar Walton on piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all of whom come together magnificently in a razor-sharp formation, mixing hardbop and soul jazz with an edge that you'll hardly find on any of Byrd's other albums from the time. A lot of the credit is due to Sonny Red – who plays with a raspy tone that's odd for the alto, and which really draws out Byrd's solo skills. Walton's got a heavy left-handed approach that really hits some great grooves – and the team of Booker and Higgins leap lyrically, yet also throw just the right amount of funk into the rhythms. Includes the Blue Break classic "Jelly Roll", the amazing jazz dancer "Book's Bossa", and the sublime "Slow Drag", one of the strangest groovers you'll ever hear! CD
(24 bit remastering by Rudy Van Gelder!)
