✨✧ MorphineLive At The Warfield 1997 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Ryko/Run Out Groove, 1997. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Unreleased live recording of the mighty Morphine from a late peak – on the Like Swimming Tour – just a couple years before the world suddenly lost Mark Sandman. It's impossible to discuss Morphine's legacy without bringing up how strongly they stood out from the pack of 90s alt rockers. Ignoring contemporary trends in both style and form, leaning on weirder, rawer strains of blues, old school rhythm & blues and super stripped down jazz in mood in instrumentation. Still, Morphine was a rock & roll trio all the way, just doing it in their completely distinctive style of buzzing 2 string bass, sax, drums, and Sandman's uber-charismatic voice. Includes "Potion", "I'm Free Now", "The Other Side", "Thursday", "Honey White", "Cure For Pain", "Wishing Well", "Radar", "Candy", "Empty Box", "You Look Like Rain", "Early To Bed", "Super Sex", "French Fries With Pepper" and more. Frank Zappa & The MothersOver-Nite Sensation (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Ryko (Japan), 1973. Used Gatefold ... $14.99 19.99
One of Frank Zappa's biggest-selling albums of the early 70s and it's also one of his best ever! Over-Nite Sensation finds Zappa's leftfield weirdness and sly social satire at play within adventurous, but accessible arrangements. It's got some early fusiony rock bits paired with heavy drums and muscular rock riffs – and it's a hell of a great sound! The songs themselves are sharp here, too. If forced to make a list of favorite Zappa songs, it'd certainly include "Camarillo Brillo", which kicks this record off – and other titles include "I'm The Slime", "Montana", "Dinah-Moe Humm", "Zomby Woof", and "Dirty Love". Features keyboards from George Duke and violin from Jean Luc Ponty – plus horns by Ian Underwood, Sal Marquez, Tom Fowler and Bruce Fowler – plus percussion by Ruth Underwood and amazing drums by Ralph Humphrey. CD
(Out of print, 2001 Japanese pressing in a cool gatefold sleeve – in great shape with obi.)

✨✧ David BowieHunky Dory (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Virgin/Ryko, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Quite possibly David Bowie's first complete moment of genius – an incredibly-formed album that's filled with tunes beyond definition and description! There's still some traces of the earlier madman in the mix, but the overall sound is much more rock-heavy – although not without the fuzzed-up and full-on guitars of Space Oddity or Man Who Sold the World – and often augmented with a bit of strings and softer touches that really bring out the humanity in the songs. The balance here is amazing – as is the fact that a few short years before, Bowie was singing "The Laughing Gnome", but is here one of the most sensitive songwriters of his generation. Tunes are quirky and personal, and titles include "Changes", "Oh You Pretty Things", "Andy Warhol", "Life On Mars", "Kooks", and "Queen Bitch". Features bonus tracks – "Bombers", "Quicksand (demo)", "Supermen (alt version)", and "Bewlay Brothers (alt version)". CD

✨✧ David BowieYoung Americans (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Virgin/Ryko, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant soul album! That's right, we said SOUL album! Bowie was at the height of his Ziggy Stardust fame when this one was recorded – a drastic left-turn in styles, forged during a point in his American tour when he could take a break, head to Philly, plug in at the Sigma Sound Studios, and come up with some fantastic little soul tunes, thanks to help from Luther Vandross! The album sparkles with the best sound of Luther's early work – and you'll hear more than a bit of Luther's work on his own, and his tunes with Gregg Diamond on the set. Features the sublime tracks "Win", "Fascination", "Right", "Somebody Up There Likes Me", and "Can You Hear Me" – as well as the hits "Young Americans" and "Fame". CD

✨✧ Elvis CostelloThis Years Model (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Ryko, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most important early records by Elvis Costello – and maybe one of a small handful that we'd deem completely essential out of his massive catalog over the decades! Elvis and The Attractions are in perfect form here – coming across with all the biting energy of the punk generation, but not punk at all – and instead finding a way to open the door to a global audience, especially American, that some of his contemporaries weren't able to reach at the time – thanks to some incredible songs that even Elvis might not have thought would go on to become pop and rock standards over the years! Titles include "This Year's Girl", "Hand In Hand", "Chelsea", "Lip Service", "Little Triggers", "Pump It Up", "No Action", "Lipstick Vogue", and "Living In Paradise". US version also includes "Radio Radio" and "Big Tears". CD

✨✧ DevoHardcore Vol 1 ... CD
Ryko, Mid 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Early art punk genius from Devo – the amazing underground material from the pre-WB years – when they were still Ohio college students! Hardcore Volume 1 features 4 track recordings made in the mid 70s, including some early versions of tracks they'd re-recorded later for their first proper album – including "Jocko Homo", "Mongoloid", "Soo Bawls" and their deranged cover of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" – and a whole bunch more that have only ever been heard by hardcore spuds. It has a cruder sound than their pop years and a darker, chillier vibe that's pretty incredible, but the concept is in full form, even at this early point! Other tracks include "Mechanical Man", "I'm A Potato", "Uglatto", "Stop Look And Listen"and more. CD

✨✧ Medeski, Martin & WoodIt's A Jungle In Here ... CD
Ryko/Gramavision, 1993. Used ... Out Of Stock
A seminal set from a time when few folks were thinking of funk in jazz – the second effort by a trio who came years after the glory days of soul jazz and funky 45s, but who also paved the way for the Daptone generation to come! Chris Wood plays bass, Billy Martin plays drums, and John Medeski plays organ and piano – yet these guys sound nothing like a Hammond trio from back in the day – as they have a soaring, almost cosmic approach to music – really letting loose with lines that sometimes soar, sometimes play in the dirt – effortlessly shifting things up in a really great way! The album includes a great version of Coltrane's "Syeeda's Song Flute", plus originals like "Worms", "Sand", "Where's Sly", and "Wiggly's Way". CD

Ryko, 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
Elvis Costello's early 80s foray into 60s Nashville and otherwise country-indebted songbooks – and it's a nice one! Even on his tighter, blistering punk era records, Elvis demonstrated not only the voice, but a great ear for the roots and soul that came before him. He showed some soul love quite profoundly a year-or-so earlier on the Get Happy album, and here he works in a similarly respectful mode for classic country, countrypolitan and even a little bit of honky tonk. Produced by Billy Sherrill – who was absolutely essential in the country crossover sound of the 60s and 70s. It's a bit overlooked, but we love this record! Includes "Why Don't You Love Me (Like You Used To Do)", "I'm Your Toy", "Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down", "Sittin' And Thinkin'", "Honey Hush", "How Much I Lied" and more. CD

Raw, rollicking Elvis Costello and his early fiery best – a bunch of his best early post punk blazers captured live at Toronto's El Mocambo in 1978! This is the point that Elvis's loving mix of proto rock grit and punk era ferocity was in full force, and that Modern Lovers learned keyboards were the secret weapon. A good number of the classics are in the set list, which includes "Mystery Dance", "Waiting For The End Of The World", "Lip Service", "Radio Radio", "Miracle Man", "Pump It Up" and more! CD

An album with a very mod-looking cover – and a set that's also overflowing with lots of mod-styled tracks to match – a cool current of soul from the 60s, but still handled with the sharper 70s vibe of young Attractions! Two sides of McLaughlin, both showcasing his spiritual exploratory inclination. The first side of this album features McLaughlin in a group with Billy Cobham, Airto, Charlie Haden, Dave Liebman and Jerry Goodman plus nice Indian touches from Mahalakshmi on sitar and Badal Roy on tabla. They perform two extended numbers, "Peace One" and "Peace Two", both modal free-ish excursions. Side 2 is solo guitar, or rather McLaughlin multi tracking himself, performing number of shorter pieces, like Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" and Miles' "Blue In Green", plus "Follow Your Heart", "Something Spiritual" and more. ✨✧ Medeski, Martin & WoodFriday Afternoon In The Universe ... CD
Ryko/Gramavision, 1995. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really transformative album from the trio of Medeski Martin & Wood – a set that helped re-open possibilities for jazz organ expression in the 90s, while also bringing back the instrument in some of his best old school modes as well! Around the time of the set, many folks thought of the organ as an instrument in jazz that was a bit dated – not exactly true, and an opinion that was definitely changed once John Medeski was able to open up on the keys on a record like this –using other keyboards too, in the core trio with Billy Martin on drums and Chris Wood on bass. There's plenty of other elements in the mix too – and Medeski can soar like Larry Young one minute, groove like Jimmy McGriff the next – on titles that include "Shack", "Tea", "Chinoiserie", "House Mop", "Paper Bass", and "Chubb Sub". Ryko, 1993. Used ... Out Of Stock
The second and best album by Morphine – rightly remembered as a much needed antidote to the grunge and mainstream alternative rock that was taking over pop culture at the time – and an enduring, ageless classic that would stand out in any era! Morphine's previous album was nearly as great, but Cure For Pain is nearly perfect. Mark Sandman's 2-string slide bass sound is indeed perfectly paired with his own vocals, the sax and drums doing the rest of the work instrumentally – there was only a couple years in which they'd really surprise us sonically with this setup, but what an amazing couple of years – and albums! Includes "Dawna", "Buena", "I'm Free Now", "All Wrong", "Candy", In Spite Of Me", "Thursday", "Cure For Pain", "Sheila", "Let's Take A Trip Together". CD

A seedy, noirish, vintage R&B-fueled 90s alt rock classic from Morphine – their third straight great album in a hell of a strong run! If they hit their peak on Good, they're still riding it out here for sure – yes, indeed. They always had a way of pairing primitivist R&B influences with compelling songcraft, but there's a confidence level here that's above and beyond, and Sandman is bringing some surprisingly tender melodies into into the grimey rhythms, bleating sax and sly humor at this point. Includes "Honey White", "Scratch", "Radar", "Yes", "Super Sex", "Gone For Good", "Free Love" and more. CD

Ryko, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic first album from Pete Townshend – one that showed the world that he was a hell of a force to be reckoned with, even away from The Who! There's some elements here that link back to Pete's work with the band, but the music here is already showing lots of new ideas brewing in his solo space – some of the greater sensitivity of Townshend's solo voice – which might not always get showcased when Roger Daltrey was taking the lead – and also some different musical strands that might not have been right for The Who. Ronnie Lane takes the lead on "Evolution" – which you'll recognize from the world of The Faces – and other titles include the original acoustic version of "Pure & Easy", plus "Nothing Is Everything (Let's See Action)", "Time Is Passing", "Forever's No Time At All", "There's A Heartache Following Me", "Content", "Parvardigar", and "Sheraton Gibson". Brilliant weirdness from Frank Zappa in the late 70s – and a pretty bold mix of oddball humor and challenging compositions! Studio Tan starts out with the 20-minute "The Adventures Of Gregory Peccary" – with studio-manipulated comic narration and dialogue that's all about slaying disposable trends on one level – but on a deeper level, it's really poetic and alliterative. Add to that the bizzarro musical backdrop and what you have is an overlooked work of genius. Also includes the tracks "Lemme Take You To The Beach", "Revised Music For The Guitar And Low Budget Orchestra" and "RDNZL". CD

An early masterpiece from Frank Zappa – one of those records that looks like it's going to be a big ol' mess when you first see the cover – but which turns out to be a carefully calculated act of madness in the end! The Mothers have all their freeform freaky brilliance intact here – still some of the snide edges of the early years, but also really learning their craft as well – and stretching out under Zappa's direction into a pastiche of songs that explore the anxieties and inanities of late 60s America! Frank produced the whole thing with an approach that others wouldn't reach for years – shifting styles, instrumentation, and sound sources with effortless ease – over tracks that include "Hot Poop", "The Idiot Bastard", "Lonely Little Girl", "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance", "Harry You're A Beast", "Mom & Dad", "Who Needs The Peace Corps", and "Flower Punk". An amazing movie in sound – supposedly music (and more) that was going to be used in a film project, issued to the public while Zappa was trying to raise money for production! The album's one of the most tripped-out studio efforts to date from the group – loads of overdubbing, and wonderfully complicated instrumentation – with some especially great keyboards from Don Preston and Ian Underwood, whose keys alone almost preface the future of fusion – while, at the same time, display some key links to 20th century avant music as well! Vocals are dropped in at just the right time, but the instrumental interplay is what really makes the record special – over many short tracks that include "Mr Green Genes", "We Can Shoot You", "Dog Breath Variations", "Sleeping In A Jar", "The Legend Of The Golden Arches", "Uncle Meat", "Cruising For Burgers", and "King Kong" in many variations. Ryko, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A silly cover and title, but one of the most powerful records so far from Frank Zappa – a set that focuses the mad energy of The Mothers into a groove that really packs a lot of punch! The lineup here is filled with key talents – including Don Preston on organ and electronics, Sugarcane Harris on violin, Lowell George on rhythm guitar, Ian Underwood on alto, and Bunk Gardner on tenor – all players who are more than willing to go to the farther edges of Zappa's consciousness – yet also have the musical chops to make the whole thing come together beautifully! There's a bit more hard rock than some of Zappa's jazz leanings in this set – and titles include "March & Dwarf Nebula", "Didja Get Any Onya", "Directly From My Heart To You", "Toads Of The Short Forest", and "The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue". CD

A really unique album from The Residents – maybe one of their most unified records, and done in an unusual narrative style that has spoken word passages over their usual offbeat sounds! There's a nice current of wit in the record at times – and it's almost as if The Residents are trying to match some of the energy of their Bay Area contemporaries Negativland with the album – although with a different sonic approach, and less of the cutting and mixing. Given that there's always been something of a soundtrack vibe in some of the group's music, the approach here works perfectly – on titles that include "Their Early Years", "Loss Of A Loved One", "Hard & Tenderly", "Kiss Of Flesh", and "Confused By What I Felt Inside". Frank Zappa's got some fantastic fusion touches on this sweet little set from the 70s – thanks to keyboards and a bit of vocals from George Duke, heavy drums from Chester Thompson, and even some brief help from Johnny Guitar Watson! The set's still got a very Zappa-esque feel, but it's clear he's also letting Duke stretch his wings a bit too as there's parts of the record that almost echo the style of some of George's more far-out recordings for MPS. The balance is great – and one that makes the album a lot more soulful at points than we're used to hearing from Zappa. Titles include "Florentine Pogen", "Can't Afford No Shoes", "Inca Roads", "Po-Jama People", "Evelyn A Modified Dog", and "San Ber'Dino". CD

"Mostly" live genius from Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention – recorded at The Roxy with some studio additions – and the players include George Duke, Tom Fowler, Ruth Underwood, Walt Fowler, Ralph Humphrey and the other great players from this peak period! It's astonishing stuff – and as strong of a mix of the tightly rock-centric and exploratory/hard fusiony sides of Zappa as you could hope for – shoot, even the stage banter is priceless! Includes "Penguin In Bondage", "Pygmy Twylyte", "Village Of The Sun", "Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?", "More Trouble Everyday" and "Be-Bop Tango (Of The Old Jazzmen's Church)" and more. CD

Ardent/Koala, Mid 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The legendary lost masterpiece of Chris Bell – an "album" that was only pulled together many years after his tragic early death, as a solo revelation of the genius that Bell had brought to the first album by Big Star! The tracks are incredible – with plenty to love if you love Big Star, but also maybe a more confident sort of presentation – as if, with any strange turn of psyche, Bell would have been able to rise into 70s pop stardom – had so many forces not conspired against him. Even before the release of the material in the early 90s, the sounds within seemed to have inspire some of the best on the forefront of creative underground work in the 80s – and from the perspective of the 21st Century, the whole thing's one of those records that now feels as if it's been perfectly placed in the legacy it deserves – every bit as magical now as when it was recorded. Titles include the classic "You & Your Sister", plus "Look Up", "I Got Kinda Lost", "There Was A Light", "Fight At The Table", "Make A Scene", "Better Save Yourself", "Speed Of Sound", and "I Am The Cosmos".
