John BarryWhisperers ... CD
Ryko/United Artists, 1966. Used ... $4.99
John Barry did the score for this dark British film starring Dame Edith Evans as an elderly woman slowly succumbing to the "whispers" of old age. The music is far different than Barry's Bond work, with more of a sophisticated orchestral sound – filled with dark brooding passages, occasionally punctuated by jazzier moments. This deluxe edition features additional dialogue from the film, a nice booklet, and an enhanced CD-rom that includes a film clip! Titles include "Are You There?", "Sticks & Stones", "Nobody & Nothing", and "Three Attackers". CD

David BowieHeroes (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ryko, 1977. Used ... $9.99
One of the three great collaborations between David Bowie and Brian Eno – and possibly the ultimate statement from his years in Berlin! The album's got some tunes that still show some of the guitar power of the early 70s Bowie – but it's also got some of the beautiful spacier moments brought forward on Low – and which are every bit the Brian Eno of Aother Green World. The balance is beautiful – stark and dark on one half, then airy and spacious on the next – handled without any sense of gimmickry, and a bold mainstream experiment that still resonates strongly today. Titles include "Beauty & The Beast", "Joe The Lion", "Heroes", "Sons Of The Silent Age", "Blackout", "V-2 Schneider", "Sense Of Doubt", "Moss Garden", "Neukoln", and "The Secret Life Of Arabia". CD
(Out of print pressing with 2 bonus tracks.)

David BowieLodger (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Ryko, 1979. Used ... $6.99
The brilliant consummation of Bowie's late 70s years in Berlin – a record that showed he could take the experiments in sound he was crafting with Brian Eno, and turn them back into the kind of creepily catchy rock tunes that first made him a legend! Eno's help on the record is still quite strong – heard very well in the record's use of odd electronics and exotic themes – of a sort that Eno would later explore on his own with David Byrne. But the real charm here is pure Bowie – with an unabashed flair for a dramatic lyric, a well-chosen use of a heavier guitar, and a sense of personality and poise that makes the record one of his most unified ever! Titles include "Red Sails", "Look Back In Anger", "Repetition", "Boys Keep Swinging", "Red Money", "Yassassin", and "DJ". Includes the bonus tracks "I Pray Ole" and "Look Back In Anger (1988 version)". CD

✨✧ David BowieScary Monsters (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Ryko (UK), 1980. Used ... $11.99
David Bowie back in costume at the end of the 70s – but informed enough from his Berlin trilogy that he's coming at things quite differently here! The album's a great summation of the sounds on Low, Heroes, and Lodger – taken almost back to some Ziggy Stardust and Space Oddity territory, but in ways that are a bit leaner, and more focused. Even more impressive, though, is the near-complete absence of other 1980 elements in the set – hardly any influences from punk or new wave, no post-disco dancefloor elements – just deeply unique Bowie all the way through, and proof that he could always find his own space in music when he wanted! Titles include "Up The Hill Backwards", "Teenage Wildlife", "Scream Like A Baby", "Because You're Young", "Scary Monsters", "Ashes to Ashes", "Fashion", and "Kingdom Come". CD
(Out of print. Includes original green tinted Ryko case, barcode has a cutout hole.)

David BowieStation To Station (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI/Ryko, 1976. Used ... $6.99
The second half of Bowie's Thin White Duke years in the studio – a record that's more cool and condense than his Young American album – but equally sublime in its own sort of way! The format here is much more compact – with a small group working alongside Bowie, still with some currents of Philly soul – but also some of the darker tones that would come to the forefront during the Berlin years after this album's release – a mode that's maybe hinted at by the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. A few tracks are long, and build up beautifully – showing a new sort of subtlety from Bowie – and titles include the classic "Station To Station", plus "Golden Years", "Word On A Wing", "TVC 15", "Stay", and "Wild Is The Wind". CD

David BowieZiggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ryko, 1973. Used ... $6.99
Arguably one of the greatest rock and roll albums of all time – and the key flowering of the partnership between David Bowie and Mick Ronson! The guitars here are heavy – so much so that the record's always crossed over big with crowds who are always suspicious of Bowie's artier work of the 70s – and represented a crucial moment when his groundbreaking music also found a large mainstream audience as well. And despite the fact that Ziggy's an androgynous space rocker with a spurious pedigree, the manufactured posturing of the album's come to be taken quite literally over the years – a vivid text of alienation, expression, and redemption – served up beautifully over a host of classic tracks that include "Five Years", "Soul Love", "Moonage Daydream", "Suffragette City", and "Ziggy Stardust" – all further proof of Bowie's 70s ability to slide in wherever he wanted with ease! Features great bonus tracks – unreleased demos of "Ziggy Stardust" and "Lady Stardust" – plus the unreleased "Sweet Head", the b-side "Velvet Goldmine", and an unreleased mix of "John I'm Only Dancing". Ryko, 1989. Used ... $5.99
The second of 3 great albums by in the short but massively influential career of Galaxie 500 – the members of whom would go on the pretty successful careers in other groups, but it's hard to imagine how those records can be better remembered than gems like On Fire! Dean Wareham had really become a master of hypnotic, just spacey enough guitar sounds by the time this record hit, with Dean & Naomi's plaintive vocals ekeing raw emotions out of the songs like no other group working at the time. Titles include "Blue Thunder", "Tell Me", "Snowstorm", "Strange", "When Will You Come Home", "Decomposing Trees", ""Leave The Planet", "Plastic Bird" and "Isn't It A Pity" – plus the bonus tracks "Victory Garden", "Ceremony" and "Cold Night". Golden SmogDown By The Old Mainstream ... CD
Ryko, 1995. Used ... $2.99
The first proper album by Americana rock supergroup Golden Smog – featuring members of Wilco, The Jayhawks & Soul Asylum among others – very much living up to the kind of trends-be-damned album that would come from these guys circa 1995 – inspired by the best acoustic-leaning classic rock of the 70s, sans cliche and feeling fresh all over again! There's a lot to love here for fans of pre-Summerteeth era Wilco and American Recordings era Jayhawks – which is to say it soundly ignores the noisier sounds of the rock mainstream at the time for a more down home vibe. Includes "V", "Pecan Pie", "Glad U Sorry", "He's A Dick", "Red Headed Stepchild", "Williamton Angel", "Friend", "Nowhere Bound", "Radio King" and more. CD

Incredible String BandWee Tam & The Big Huge ... CD
Hannibal/Ryko, 1968. Used 2CD ... $6.99
The fourth album from The Incredible String Band and by far their most sprawling to date – the double album Wee Tam & The Big Huge – which was originally split into separate LPs for the US release, but best served as a whole! Multi-instrumentalists Mike Heron & Robin Williamson began using studio multi-tracking to incredible effect on their previous LP, and continue on that path here, though accompanied by frequent collaborator Licorice (who earlier sang with the group, but contributes Irish harp & percussion here) plus violin and percussion by Rose – and the album as in turns their most ambitious and also quite intimate, particularly on the first half. 18 tracks on 2CDs: "Job's Tears", "Puppies", "The Yellow Snake", "The Half-Remarkable Question", "Air", "Ducks On A Pond", ", "Maya", "Lordly Nightshade", "The Mountain Of God", "The Circle Is Unbroken" and more. ReplacementsLet It Be ... CD
Restless/Ryko, 1984. Used ... $3.99
The masterpiece by one of the greatest genuine rock bands of all time – finally remastered! Let It Be veers all over the place, or at least as much as jangly rock music can, in the best way possible. Includes the pseudo twangy opener "I Will Dare", with the distinctly midwestern hardcore of the group's earlier years showing up on "We're Coming Out" and "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out", and Westerberg's great heart-on-sleeve, ragged balladry appearing for the closers. Like the Meat Puppets and X, the 'Mats really found themselves after they shed the rigid rules of punk rock, and developed into something every bit as genuine. They followed the rock songbook just enough to keep their work warm and familiar, but with way too huge and hard-pounding heart to ever seem even the least bit derivative. Hell, they even make Kiss's "Black Diamond" sound sincere! Other tracks include "Favorite Thing", "Androgynous", "Unsatisfied", "Seen Your Video", "Gary's Got A Boner", "Sixteen Blue" and "Answering Machine". CD

✨✧ TamboAl Santiago Presents Tambo ... CD
Montuno/Ryko, 1975. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the earliest records on the Montuno label, and one of the best too – a killer batch of Latin jazz numbers that really sets a whole new standard for the 70s! Al Santiago's at the helm of the session, and he guides the musicians with all the care of his older recordings from back in the day – allowing for plenty of open, descarga-like instrumentation – yet also bringing in a nice set of focus, too. Players include Johnny Almendra on timbales, George Haskins and Gilbert Colon on piano, John Purcell on baritone sax, Dave Chamberlin on flute and trombone, and Mike Ortiz and Charlie Affelt on trumpets. There's some great mambo numbers in the set – and titles include a "Gone City", "Muneco", "Co Co My My", "Mientras Yo Viva", and "Con Sandunga". CD

✨✧ Mothers Of Invention (Frank Zappa)Freak Out ... CD
Ryko, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fabulous furry freakout from Frank Zappa – the start of a legendary run in the late 60s – and a record that is still as mindblowing now as it was all those many years back! There's a deadpan quality to the vocals that's unlike anything other groups were trying for at the time – a snotty aspect that's often forgotten amidst all the celebrations of Zappa's hippiedom, but which really makes the record stand out from the pack – giving it a kind of darkness that's a wonderful change from some of the too-earnest psych or folk rock elements of the period. Music is great too – and a lot more simple than in later years – a really tight blend of garage and psych that furthers the almost punky quality of the record. Titles include "The Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet", "Motherly Love", "I Ain't Got No Heart", "Hungry Freaks Daddy", "Wowie Zowie", "You Didn't Try To Call Me", "Any Way The Wind Blows", and "I'm Not Satisfied".
