Vladimir CosmaDiva ... CD
DRG/Ryko, 1982. Used ... $2.99
When we were impressionable little arty tykes, this was one of our favorite soundtracks. It's got some beautiful Satie-esque tracks that feature solo piano by Vladimir Cosma, plus some weird Euro electronic stuff that has a nice cold feel to it. Also features a few tracks from the opera "La Wally", but we always skipped over these. Titles include "Voie Sans Issue", "Gorodish", "Promenade Sentimentale", "Metro Police", and "Lame De Fond". CD

Elvis CostelloGet Happy (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ryko, 1980. Used ... $5.99
An album with a very mod-looking cover – and a set that's also overflowing with lots of mod-styled tracks to match – a cool current of soul from the 60s, but still handled with the sharper 70s vibe of young Attractions! Production is by Nick Lowe – and although The Jam were also turning towards more soul-styled sounds at the time, Elvis and Lowe may well have done them one better with this set. Titles include "Love For Tender", "Opportunity", "The Imposter", "Secondary Modern", "King Horse", "Possession", "High Fidelity", "Riot Act", "Human Touch", "Beaten To The Punch", and "I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down". Remastered with 10 bonus tracks. CD
(Out of print. Includes the original green tinted Ryko case.)

Diga Rhythm BandDiga ... CD
Round/Ryko, 1976. Used ... $6.99
One of Mickey Hart's first forays into the world music genre – and way way better than his later Planet Drum recordings! The Grateful Dead's drummer plays with, and produces, an all-percussion ensemble that includes tablas, marimbas, talking drums, timbales, and congas. All the melody parts are handled by marimba, vibes and talking drums, but there does seem to be some overdubbed guitar on a couple tracks – and although the rhythms are firmly rock-based and the group is quite large, there's a lot of spacious moments and atmosphere in the polyrhythmic grooves – more than enough so to give the record strong appeal to listeners with more globally-tuned ears. 5 tracks in all, most fairly long – "Sweet Sixteen", "Magnificent Sevens", "Razooli", "Tal Mala", and "Happiness Is Drumming". ✨✧ Frank ZappaHot Rats ... CD
Ryko, 1969. Used ... $5.99
One of those records that should be an insane dark mess, given the look of the cover – but which turns out to be a surprisingly well put-together effort all the way through! Zappa does a great job of hiding behind his hair here – never acting with the pomp that a pop genius like him could easily have enacted – and instead passing off the record as if it's just another freakout – despite the fact that the arrangements are some of his tightest, most focused, and downright groovy so far! There's plenty of key musical help to make the whole thing come out right – including bass from Shuggie Otis, the inimitable voice Captain Beefheart, on the cassic "Willie The Pimp", violin from Jean-Luc Ponty, drums from Paul Humphrey, and bass from Max Bennett – all players who really live up to the musical complexity of Zappa's compositions – often with a pre-fusion vibe that's almost unexpected. Other titles include "Son Of Mr Green Grass", "The Gumbo Variations", "It Must Be A Camel", "Peaches In Regalia", and "Little Umbrellas". CD
(In the original green-tinted case.)

✨✧ Frank ZappaWe're Only In It For The Money ... CD
Ryko, 1968. Used ... $6.99
An early masterpiece from Frank Zappa – one of those records that looks like it's going to be a big ol' mess when you first see the cover – but which turns out to be a carefully calculated act of madness in the end! The Mothers have all their freeform freaky brilliance intact here – still some of the snide edges of the early years, but also really learning their craft as well – and stretching out under Zappa's direction into a pastiche of songs that explore the anxieties and inanities of late 60s America! Frank produced the whole thing with an approach that others wouldn't reach for years – shifting styles, instrumentation, and sound sources with effortless ease – over tracks that include "Hot Poop", "The Idiot Bastard", "Lonely Little Girl", "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance", "Harry You're A Beast", "Mom & Dad", "Who Needs The Peace Corps", and "Flower Punk". Ryko, 1970s/1980s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $38.99
A special vinyl sampler from Frank Zappa – intended to point the way towards the big run of releases that would soon come on CD under the same title! The set brings together some of the best of that enterprise – and features live performances from 1969 through 1984 – all mastered by Bernie Grundman, with sound that really made most of the Zappa bootlegs on the market obsolete! Titles include "The Florida Airport Tape", "Sharleena", "Nanook Rubs It", "The Evil Prince", "You Call That Music", "King Kong", "Dickie's Such An Asshole", "Cosmic Debris", "Montana", "The Torture Never Stops", and "Plastic People". ✨✧ David BowieMan Who Sold The World (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Virgin/Ryko, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first truly great David Bowie electric guitar album – an all-out, power-driven set of tracks played by a group that included Mick Ronson and Tony Visconti! Bowie's in prime pre-Ziggy mode here – ripping into tunes that blister with dark energy that are some of the first truly dangerous songs he ever recorded – with this strong undercurrent of mania that follows some of the darker whimsy of his earliest records – set to searing sounds that would forever help Bowie cross over to audiences who might previously have thought him an arty wimp. The set includes classics like "Saviour Machine", "The Width Of The Circle", "All The Madmen", "Black Country Rock", "The Supermen", and the title track, "The Man Who Sold The World". Great Ryko pressing – with bonus tracks "Moonage Daydream", "Hang Onto Yourself", "Holy Holy", and "Lightning Frightening". CD

✨✧ David BowieZiggy Stardust – Motion Picture Soundtrack ... CD
Ryko, 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great package that includes the "final" concert by David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars persona – recorded at London's Hammersmith Odeon in 1973, and pulled from the soundtrack to the DA Pennebaker film of the same name! The original film featured Bowie, Mick Ronson, and the rest of the Spiders jamming their way through the guitar-heavy tunes of the Ziggy era, plus a few choice bits from earlier years. Titles include "Ziggy Stardust", "Watch That Man", "Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud", "All The Young Dudes", "Oh You Pretty Things", "Moonage Daydream", "Changes", "My Death", and "Hang Onto Yourself". Ryko, 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Textural mood pieces and quite beautiful material from Harmonia and Eno – beautiful mid 70s recordings and a few unreleased gems – wholly wonderful material that weirdly didn't see a release for about 30 years! Some of the tunes are sparely furnished, kind of pastoral bits of echoing atmospherics and trance inducing sound loops, others with more jarring bits of dissonant tension, and all of it holding up proudly with the better known work of the sound masters involved, together and separately! Includes "Welcome", "Atmosphere", "Camos Comapneros", "By The Riverside", "Weird Dream", "Almost", "When Shade Was Born". "Aubade" and more. CD

✨✧ Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of InventionOne Size Fits All ... CD
Ryko, 1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Frank Zappa's got some fantastic fusion touches on this sweet little set from the 70s – thanks to keyboards and a bit of vocals from George Duke, heavy drums from Chester Thompson, and even some brief help from Johnny Guitar Watson! The set's still got a very Zappa-esque feel, but it's clear he's also letting Duke stretch his wings a bit too as there's parts of the record that almost echo the style of some of George's more far-out recordings for MPS. The balance is great – and one that makes the album a lot more soulful at points than we're used to hearing from Zappa. Titles include "Florentine Pogen", "Can't Afford No Shoes", "Inca Roads", "Po-Jama People", "Evelyn A Modified Dog", and "San Ber'Dino". CD

✨✧ Frank Zappa/Mothers Of InventionAbsolutely Free (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Reprise/Ryko, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most mindblowing pop culture pastiches of the 60s – a record that's as absolutely mad as it is absolutely free – and proof that a whole new generation of musicians like Zappa were using the studio like an instrument itself! This is work that could have never existed away from record – as the mix of sounds, moods, and music comes together with a maddening frenzy – hardly the languid speed you'd expect from the early years of hippiedom – and instead, an inspirational stream of styles and ideas delivered with trademark Zappa dexterity and wit! The album's divided into two long passages – "Absolutely Free" and "The MOI American Pageant" – with tracks that include "Plastic People", "Amnesia Vivace", "The Duke Regains His Chops", "America Drinks & Goes Home", "Son Of Suzy Creamcheese", "Status Back Baby", and "The Duke Of Prunes". ✨✧ DevoHardcore Vol 1 ... LP
Ryko/Superior Viaduct, 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Early art punk genius from Devo – the amazing underground material from the pre-WB years – when they were still Ohio college students! Hardcore Volume 1 features 4 track recordings made in the mid 70s, including some early versions of tracks they'd re-recorded later for their first proper album – including "Jocko Homo", "Mongoloid", "Soo Bawls" and their deranged cover of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" – and a whole bunch more that have only ever been heard by hardcore spuds. It has a cruder sound than their pop years and a darker, chillier vibe that's pretty incredible, but the concept is in full form, even at this early point! Other tracks include "Mechanical Man", "I'm A Potato", "Uglatto", "Stop Look And Listen"and more. LP, Vinyl record album
