Ruud BosDe Fabriek ... LP
678 Records (Belgium), 1981. New Copy ... $34.99 39.99
A rare later soundtrack from Dutch composer Ruud Bos – best known for some very funky work at the start of the 70s, and still going strong here a decade later! The score's got a much more mid 70s vibe than you'd expect – like some of the best American cop show work of the early 70s, with jazzy instrumentation intertwined with larger orchestrations – handled by Nat Peck, who had a fair bit of jazz experience himself – which means that he really lets the best elements of the music come forth and blossom! A number of tracks are upbeat and quickly-grooving – and those are mixed with some shorter scene-setting moments that balance the whole thing out strongly – and make the whole package feel like a long suite of sounds, dedicated to this lost film. There's a whopping 30 tracks in all – and titles include "Longing", "Secret Affair", "At Labour", "Sugar", "Happy House", "In Love", "Romance", "Start", "Casino", "Jack's Death", and the well-titled "Sexy Music". ✨✧ Ruud BosSecret All-Star Band – Studio Sessions 1964 to 1969 (with bonus tracks) ... CD
NJA (Netherlands), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Hard-swinging work from the pen of Dutch arranger/conductor Ruud Bos – a large group talent whose music here reminds us a lot of the Quincy Jones albums for Mercury in the early 60s! As with Quincy, there's a great blend of sophistication and soul – charts that are fully aware of all the modern changes in tone and color, but which also never fail to groove – and which feature standout solo performances throughout – delivered by a host of top-shelf talents who include Harry Verbeke on tenor, Piet Noordijk on alto, Cees Smal on trumpet, Cees Slinger on piano, and Jacques Schols on bass – all artists who've given us some great albums of their own over the years. Bos himself plays piano and vibes – and the set even features some early work from pianist Misha Mengelberg – on a set of tracks that include "Three Seconds", "Lutuli", "Sad Model", "Harry's Prize", "Gitanes", "ID", "Summernight", "Surprise To Bob", "Monk's Dream", and "On Green Dolphin Street". ✨✧ Hank MobleyHank Mobley In Holland – To One So Sweet Stay That Way ... CD
Dutch Jazz Archive (Netherlands), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A lost smoker from the legendary tenorist Hank Mobley – recorded relatively late in his career, at a time when his music on Blue Note was really taking some great new directions! The approach here is maybe a bit more straightforward than those records, but still completely amazing – as Mobley's soloing with all these unusual twists and turns, and phrasing that you never would have heard a few years before – all while working with a variety of Dutch backing combos on these live performances from the Netherlands in 1968! One group features Pim Jacobs on piano, Wim Overgaauw on guitar, Ruud Jacobs on bass, and future avant legend Han Bennink on drums – and another features the great Rob Agerbeek on piano, with Hans Van Rossem on bass and Cees See on drums. There's also two studio performances with the larger Hobby Orkest ensemble – quite an unusual setting for Hank, and a great one too – and titles include "Summertime", "Twenty Four & More", "Three Way Split", "Vierd Blues", "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", "Sonny's Tune", "Autumn Leaves", and "Blues By Five".
