Gary NumanI Assassin (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Atco/Beggars Banquet, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 22.98
Gary Numan's looking mighty noirish on the cover – and the record continues that fantastic run of dark-edged electro pop that made the man one of the most important song stylists of his generation! A few tracks here are maybe more tuneful than before – with some surprisingly bright moments – but overall, the Numan vibe is still very much in place – and those trademark vocals are completely wonderful. Titles include "White Boys & Heroes", "This Is My House", "The 1930s Rust", "We Take Mystery To Bed", "War Songs", "Music For Chameleons", and "I Assassin". LP, Vinyl record album

TriageAmerican Mythology ... CD
Okka Disk, 2004. New Copy ... $6.99
A record that leaps right out of the gate with a sound that's more of the moment than mythological – amazing improvisations between this very sharp Chicago trio – a group that features Jason Ajemian on bass, Tim Daisy on drums, and Dave Rempis on some mighty nice alto and tenor sax! Rempis is really rising to the best of his abilities here – becoming a real shining star and a boundless source of imaginative tones and phrases – but the presence of the other group members is crucial to the sound too, as the bass is fantastic, and Tim Daisy's sense of sound is equally great. Titles include "Rust Belt", "White Flies", "Sidelights", "Rong Tones", and "In The Afternoon". CD

✨✧ VariousLaurie Records Story Vol 3 – Girls & Girl Groups ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Great girl group grooves from Laurie Records – one of the powerhouses of the genre during the 60s! The set brings together some of the best that Laurie had to offer at the time – not just hits, but some great lesser-known gems that really make the package stand out from other girl group sets on the market – a wonderful collection of both rock and soul cuts that show there's still plenty left to discover if you know where to dig! Tracks are pulled not just from the main Laurie label, but also from other imprints too – including the Rust, Providence, and Harmon labels – and as usual, Ace has done a bang-up job with the notes and images – helping us learn plenty about the music while our ears are enjoying the sounds. Titles include "Hanky Panky" by The Summits, "Shy Guy" by The Charmers, "You're The Love Of My Life" by Brenda Lee Jones, "Stop Look & Listen" by The Chiffons, "He's Mine" by Linda & The Lindettes, "Your Big Mistake" by The Del-Rons, "I Still Love You" by Les Girls, "He's My Dream Boy" by Marie Antoinette, "How Can I Be Sure" by Gloria Dennis, "Circus Girl" by Bernadette Carroll, "Whenever A Teenager Cries" by The Jeans, "Nothing Went Right" by Lorrie Darnell, and "Your Life Is Gone" by Reparata. ✨✧ Ken Vandermark & Mats GustafssonVerses ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Bold, beautiful work from the team of Ken Vandermark and Mats Gustafsson – two of the most inventive reed players of the past few decades – working together here in free, unfettered formation! The set was actually recorded right above Dusty Groove – in a very open, woody loft space – which really helps shape the sound of the set – as the notes from both players ring out wonderfully in the loft – almost recalling the creative improvisations of the New York scene from decades before – but handled here with all the amazing new sense of invention that both Vandermark and Gustafsson seem to bring to any instrument they touch! Ken plays tenor, bass clarinet, and b flat clarinet – and Mats handles alto, tenor, and baritone – all in a rich range of sounds and tones that really leave us breathless. Titles include "Ripolin", "The Madness Of Branches", "I Never Dreamed", "Fortunate Rust", "We Turn The Page", and "Beside Me Images". CD

Brand NubianIn God We Trust ... LP
Rush/Elektra, 1992. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $19.99 24.98
Early 90s greatness from Brand Nubian! Once Puba left the group, we were all ready for this sophomore effort to just fall flat. But Sadat X and Lord Jamar aquit themselves nicely on the mic, and the beats are head-noddingly satisfying too, no doubt due to Dante Ross's guidance. And they don't let up on their hardcore 5% stance either. Classic! Includes the classic singles "Allah U Akbar", "Love Me Or Leave Me Alone" and "Punks Jump Up To Get Beat Down", plus "Travel Jam", "Steal Ya 'Ho", "Steady Bootleggin'", "Black Star Line", "Meaning Of The 5%", "Ain't No Mystery", "Pass The Gat", 'Allah & Justice", "The Godz. . .", "Brand Nubian Rock The Set" and "Black & Blue". Comet Is ComingTrust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery ... LP
Impulse, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99
A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". LP, Vinyl record album

Mood II Swing takes on This great groover from Crustation – serving up an especially nice mix on the vocal version – which has this nicely creepy vocal passage seeping out between more ubeat, uplifting house-oriented grooves! There's a great kick in the rhythm, and these really great keyboard blasts – and the energy still returns on the flipside, even though the bass is up a bit more for the dubby mix! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Dark work from Beth Gibbons – known to most as the voice of Portishead, but sounding amazing here on this album of her own! The record certainly has traces of the Portishead work from earlier years – but there's also a folksy sound to it, conjuring up images of a dark past England, almost in the moody mode of some of our favorite albums from the folk funk generation. Production is great – dripping with light instrumental touches, hung around Beth's eerie vocals – and titles include "Tom The Model", "Mysteries", "Sand River", "Romance", "Spider Monkey", and "Funny Time Of Year". Columbia, 1974. New Copy ... $5.99 6.99
Killer electric work from Herbie Hancock – right on par with his groundbreaking Headhunters set, but a bit spacier too! The album features a Headhunters-solid lineup – with Bennie Maupin on saxes, Paul Jackson on bass, Mike Clark on drums, and Bill Summers on percussion – all grooving wonderfully with Herbie on a set of super-long tracks! Hancock himself handles a host of incredible keyboards – Fender Rhodes, clavinet, Arp, and lots more – all in a lean electric style that still sounds as fresh today as it did way back in the mid 70s – perhaps even more so, given the return to this sort of basic groove that has happened in recent years! Tracks are long, tight, and super funky – and titles include "Actual Proof", "Palm Grease", "Spank-A-Lee", and "Butterfly". CD

Carlo RustichelliAvanti (with bonus tracks) ... CD
United Artists/Quartet (Spain), 1972. New Copy ... $24.99
An American film – directed by Billy Wilder and starring Jack Lemmon – but one with a distinctly Italian-styled soundtrack, thanks to the music of Carlo Rustichelli! Rustichelli scores the film with a style that's quite like his early 60s work for Italian films – warmly romantic, with some nice old school touches – all served up in a nice blend of light strings, easygoing rhythms, and some moody touches on keyboards that almost feel like theremin! Tracks are mostly short, some of them sprightly – to fit the comedic mood – and a few have some more traditionally Italian themes too. Titles include "Cha Cha Cha", "The Morgue", "Miss Piggot", "Coffee & Croissants", "A Burial Front The Sea", "Permesso", and "Wendell & Pamela". CD features 5 bonus tracks too! CD

Carlo RustichelliBirds, The Bees, & The Italians ... LP
United Artists, 1967. Sealed ... $4.99
An extremely groovy soundtrack from Carlo Rustichelli – one that bridges two generations of Italian comedy scores! At one level, there's a bouncing melodic feel to the score – done in a very Nino Rota-esque way, with plenty of jazzy touches on electric guitar, and some extremely captivating tunes. At another level, there's more of the mod 60s approach at work too – particularly in the way Pier Luigi Urbini interprets the score, and in the way the whole thing's recorded. Very nice stuff – and filled with classic Italian-styled tunes! Titles include "Night Dance", "Preparing For The Party", "Busy Bodies", "Sunday In The Piazza", "In Town", "Rounds Of Pleasure", and "Blackmail With Loving Care". LP, Vinyl record album

Carlo RustichelliDelitto Quasi Perfetto ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1966. New Copy ... $16.99
A wealth of unreleased music from this 60s Italian film – a movie that only gave the world a 45rpm single when first in theaters – which makes this bounteous collection of songs a real lost treasure! The music may well be some of the most striking of the time from Carlo Rustichelli – often awash in odd sounds from familiar instruments – kind of with the jazz through a filter mode that Nino Rota would use for night scenes in Fellini films, or maybe in the more understated modes of early work by Piero Piccioni. Bruno Nicolai conducts, and no doubt helped the music sound even groovier – and the CD features 22 tracks in all, 20 of which are previously unreleased! CD

Carlo RustichelliDivorce Italian Style ... LP
United Artists, 1962. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A classic Italian score from Carlo Rustichelli – penned for a famous early comedy from Marcello Mastroianni! The mood of the film is a bit lighter than some of Marcello's with Fellini – and as a result, so is the soundtrack – put together with a mixture of sprightly melodies and older, warmer modes that really the Italian film score mode of the previous decade – but which are masterfully handled by Rustichelli with a tongue-in-cheek approach that's more of a parody of them than anything else! The blend is quite nice – and almost visual enough even without the images on the screen. Titles include "Divorzio", "Canto D'Amore", "Traffico", "Marcia Funebre", "Musica D'Amore", and "Serenata". One of Rusty Bryant's classics! The record's a monster – very much in the style of his Fire Eater classic, as you might guess from the title! The tracks here are all long, open, and rock-solid – held firmly in place by some incredible drums from Idris Muhammad – and featuring a group that includes Jimmy Ponder on guitar, plus the little-heard Bill Mason on organ – a player who recorded briefly for the Eastbound label, and who also handled the Hammond chores on Rufus Harley's funky album! Rusty's tenor is great, as always – really opening up with this younger generation – and titles include "If You Really Love Me", "Wildfire", "Alobamo Kid", and a version of "Riders on the Storm", of all things! Saimel (Spain), 1967. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from Carlo Rustichelli – a set that resonates strongly with some of his earlier soundtracks for Italian comedies in the 60s, but which also has a few groovier touches as well! The setting is Sicily, and the film's a commentary on outdated modes in that part of Italy during the 60s – and Rustichelli's music has a nice way of dancing back and forth in time – occasionally echoing older Sicilian styles, while then bringing in some hipper modern elements – invoked especially on the organ lines that step out on a few of the coolest songs in the score. CD features 25 titles in all, including a few bonus tracks – and tunes include "The Nightmare", "Spying On Lucia", "The Wedding", "Don Pippo Matara", "Deguello", "The Four Newlyweds", and "Nightly Antics". ✨✧ VariousRustlers Roots Of Funk – 20 Ultra Rare Rocking Funk & R&B Instrumentals ... CD
Lo Recordings/Invisible College (UK), 1950s/1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Raunchy raunchy raunchy – and pretty darn nice too! The Rustler takes his "roots of funk" very seriously – and serves up a massive batch of pre-funk singles that have a really nasty sound. The work dates back to the 50s and early 60s, and includes a host of obscure R&B and soul jazz acts, most of them instrumental, all of them with a really strong pre-funk sound! There's lots of heavy drums, fierce bass, scratchy guitars, and honking sax – and the whole thing thumps with a stark, raw, jagged quality that will definitely take you back to the early days of funk – and many of the singles are produced with weird production touches and sound effects. Titles include "Get Frogish (parts 1 & 2)" by King Cobras, "Cake Time" by Them Prodigals, "Cabbage Greens" by World Famous Upsetters, "Pigmy" by The Delegates, "Hot Pants" by Zuma, "Too Much Firewater" by Lorenzo & Smith, "Soul Shang A Ling Dance" by Fabulous Georgia Soul Twisters, "The Dealer" by Jamie Coe & The Gigolos, "Soul Bagg" by Reno & The Chosen 3, "Strange Happenings" by Rex Garvin, "Neck Bones & Hot Sauce" by L Anderson, and "Black Olives" by Badboys. Tresor National (Canada), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 29.99
A fantastic porn soundtrack from the Canadian scene at the start of the 70s – a wicked little record from the time when even a schlocky movie could be trusted to have some pretty great music in the mix! The styles here echo some of the modes in the Vampyros Lesbos world of Jess Franco films – funky drums, great organ lines, and plenty of trippy guitar – but there's also the added use of harmony vocals on a few cuts, with female singers who give the whole thing a warmly joyous quality, and really sets the whole thing apart from the rest! The record's got a great sense of variety, including some really cool distorted moog on one track – and titles include "Felicia Nova", "Emmene Moi", "Harizap", "Chanson Pour Candy", "Cago 9", "Sans Raison", "Ouvre Ton Ame", and "Je Ne T'Attendrai Pas". Beach BoysPet Sounds (mono) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Capitol, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
One of the greatest records of all time – and don't you forget it! Despite the countless lines of type that have been written about this record, nothing does it full justice like an all-through listen – something we're reminded of every time we put this one on the turntable, which is a heck of a lot over the years! Brian Wilson busted his ass making this little gem – and the rest of the world, and the band, were never the same again – awash in harmonies that most other groups tried to match, set to themes of young loss, longing, and frustration that really mark an emotional development – not just in the Beach Boys, but in pop music in general. And although some of the tracks are ones you've heard a million times on oldies stations, they somehow resonate together much more strongly here – taking on new meaning as the smaller elements of each song come into constellation with each other – creating a complicated tapestry of feelings set to near-godlike orchestrations. Titles include "God Only Knows", "Caroline No", "Pet Sounds", "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", and "You Still Believe In Me". LP, Vinyl record album

International Anthem, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99
A really fantastic album from Jaimie Branch – one that's even more powerful than the first Fly Or Die set – which is saying a heck of a lot, given that that record hit most of us with a pretty hard punch! The sound is even more groundbreaking than before – moving well beyond jazz, although there's plenty of that in the mix too – to reflect Branch's connection to so many different musical communities in the contemporary scene! Jaimie brings a lot of anger and frustration at the current political situation into the music – a great reminder that with the right focus, jazz can be used for so many different cultural aims – especially when handled this well, in a lineup that features Jaimie on trumpet, electronics, and a bit of voice – with Lester St Louis on cello and percussion, Jason Ajemian on bass and percussion, and Chad Taylor on drums, mbira, and xylophone. The record also features guest work from Ben Lamar Gay and Marvin Tate on voice, Matt Schneider on 12 string guitar, and Dan Bitney on percussion and synth – and titles include "Prayer For Amerikkka (parts 1 & 2)", "Lesterlude", "Love Song", "Simple Silver Surfer", "Bird Dogs Of Paradise", "Nuevo Roquero Estereo", and "Twentey Three N Me Jupiter Redux". Fool's Gold, 2013. Used ... $2.99
Danny Brown steps up his game on Old – delivering on all the promise of his much-hailed previous Fool's Gold LP – and actually topping it! Danny's XXX was a mix of next-level smarts and production, balanced with knowlingly gutter dwelling rhymes – but this one is knowingly more "mature" on the vocal tip, to a degree – but don't worry, it's still Danny Brown! Once again, the production is brilliant – but with better pacing throughout, making this one of the stronger hip hop full lengths of '13. Includes production by Paul White, Rustie, SKYWLKR, A-Trak and others. Ezz-Thetics/Hat Hut (Switzerland), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $16.99
A CD that brings together some important early work from altoist Marion Brown – two long tracks from the sessions for his Quartet album on ESP – and a later album issued only overseas! The set begins with the long tracks "Capricorn Moon" and "Mephistopheles" from Marion Brown Quartet – one of our favorite albums ever on the legendary ESP label – a rhythmic, soulful, early session by Marion Brown – recorded before his own albums on Impulse, but with a similar feel to the best new thing sessions of that label at the time! The group is superb – with Benny Maupin on sax, Alan Shorter on trumpet, Rashied Ali on drums, and Ronnie Boykins on bass, often playing in tandem with Reggie Johnson – for a unique double-pulsing feel that makes for a nice rhythmic thrust. Next are the tracks "Juba Lee" and "Iditus", from the album Juba Lee – brilliant work from Marion Brown – one of his first albums, and a great set of tracks that have a fragile New York avant style – almost ESP, but not as raw, and with the kind of soulful emotion that's always made Brown's work stand out from the rest of his crowd. The group on the album is a septet, with Beaver Harris on drums, Dave Burrell on piano, Bennie Maupin on tenor, Alan Shorter on trumpet, and Grachan Moncour III on trombone. CD

Gene ClarkNo Other ... LP
Asylum/4AD, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 26.99
A pretty amazing effort from country rock progenitor Gene Clark! This one blends breezy songcraft that's not too far off from his previous couple of great solo albums – rustic harmonies and memorable lyricism flavored by acoustic guitars – with far more deft studio touches such as synths and densely layered backing vocals. There really was no other album in '74 like No Other, and initially it had the poor reception to show for it! It has a somewhat laidback and laconic vibe overall – infused with that Cali country rock groove that Gene helped invent – yet the production is richly produced on an epic scale, an effort that seems to seek flat out perfection. A couple years later, California fellow travelers would utilize a similar approach and sell LPs by the ton. Here's hoping those groups bought Gene a dinner or two to thank him for the inspiration! Includes "Life's Greatest Fool", "Silver Raven", "No Other", "Some Misunderstanding", "The True One", "Lady Of The North", "Strength Of Strings" and "From A Silver Phial". LP, Vinyl record album

Stanley CrouchKansas City Lightning – The Rise & Times Of Charlie Parker ... Book
Harper Perennial, 2013. New Copy ... $4.99 16.99
The story of Charlie Parker is often draped in hyperbole and exaggeration – which is why it's extra great that this biography is handled by Stanley Crouch – one of the few writers we could trust to get past the hype and really find a way to link Parker's life and music! As you might guess from the title, the book spends a lot of time looking at Bird's early years in Kansas City – and draws a great portrait of that vivid environment in the years between the wars, which is almost as enthralling as the information on Parker himself. Crouch writes with a great sense of story, as well – and he holds us rapt throughout, going way past any of the over-told tales from later years. 365 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleNeptune Collection ... LP
Folkways, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 24.99
Warmly experimental music from the 70s Folkways scene – music that's a mixture of jazz, folk, electronics, and improvised styles – played with an open, honest sort of feel! The Entourage Music & Theater Ensemble features four composer/musicians – Joe Clark, Wall Matthews, Rusti Clark, and Michael Smith – all individuals with a nicely subdued sensibility, despite the "theater" in the group's name. The work here is hardly performative – at least not in an aggressive sense – and instead is a beautiful matrix of sounds from instruments that include keyboards, acoustic guitar, soprano sax, viola, gong, and percussion – all used lightly, with an approach that's almost a folksier take on early 70s spiritual jazz – especially given the way the acoustic guitar is used. Titles include "Nature Spirits", "Incantation For The Death Of Self", "Space Needle Suicide", "Tar Box Poltergeist", and "Druid Dance". LP, Vinyl record album

4th ComingStrange Things – The Complete Works 1970 to 1974 ... CD
Now Again, Early 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
A stunning batch of tracks from a very unusual LA group of the early 70s – a funk combo at the core, but one that was also equally comfortable with bits of psych and redneck rock as well! The music here was all recorded within a short span of years, and mostly issued on the small Alpha label as a handful of funky 45s – but the style is surprisingly spacious, and shows a strong sense of musicianship from the members of the group – so much so that they seem equally comfortable and right on top of their game, no matter what direction they choose to take! And don't think that this multi-style description means that these guys are too all over the map, because there's a really unified sense of soul that holds the whole thing together – so that when they get a bit rootsy, the result is country soul – or when they get a bit trippy, they hit some Funkadelic-styled sounds. The collection includes great notes on the setting that produced these tracks – penned by Egon, who put the set together with help from Malcolm Catto, DJ Shadow, and others. Titles include "Don't Let Him Take Away Your Mind", "Strange Things", "Heaven & Earth", "Take Time", "We Got Love", "Waterloo At Watergate", "Why Don't You Trust In Me", "Cruising Central Ave", "The Dead Don't Die Alive", and "You're My Precious Someone". Dawn/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $18.99
Very unusual music from Fruupp – a group who issued these four albums on the always-unusual Dawn label – one of the most-trusted UK prog imprints of the early 70s! The sound of Fruupp is a bit hard to peg – as they're very proggy on their debut, but also clearly have a strong ear for more tuneful moments – almost like they've secretly got a few pop songs they're waiting for expose at the right time – although maybe that's just the production, because as things move on, the group more strongly embrace this vaguely medieval aesthetic, although again always with shorter tunes that feel like they could easily become hits in the right hands. Part of that quality is from the strength of the instrumentation, which really focuses the energy of the songs – even when the group is moving off into oboe or flute territory next to their guitars and keyboards. The box set features all four albums with original cover art – Future Legends, Seven Secrets, Prince Of Heaven's Eyes, and Modern Masquerades – plus the bonus tracks "Prince Of Heaven", "Jaunting Car", and "On A Clear Day". Blue Note, 2013. Used ... $11.99
Mindblowing work from Robert Glasper – a set that makes us fall in love with his music even more than before – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given that we've loved him for years! Glasper's working here in his collaborative Black Radio format – but at a level that's even more perfected than the initial album of this project – a really groundbreaking blend of live jazz instrumentation and underground soul inspiration – served up by Robert's core quartet, with help from a whole host of wonderful guest singers! Glasper alone is worth the price of admission – Fender Rhodes and piano lines that are completely sublime, in that flowing groove that's only gotten better with age – and the combo also features wicked bass from Derrick Hodge, sax and flute from Casey Benjamin, and some damn funky drums from Mark Colenburg – who proves that you don't need any drum loops or samples to make music this great. The singers are the icing on the cake – a lineup that includes Faith Evans, Dwele, Jill Scott, Common, Lupe Fiasco, Lalah Hathaway, Norah Jones, and others – on titles that include "Calls", "Worries", "I Stand Alone", "What Are We Doing", "Trust", "Yet To Find", "You Own Me", "Somebody Else", "Persevere", and "Let It Ride". Sublime sounds from the great Herbie Hancock – presented here in one of his amazing Japanese-only albums from the 70s! The record is a showcase for Hancock in two different modes – as Herbie plays solo acoustic piano on side one, and delivers these really haunting renditions of "Maiden Voyage" and "Dolphin Dance" – both of them long, and with relaxed exploratory solos. Side two features Herbie on a variety of electric keyboards (moog, arp, etc) – playing with the kind of imagination and funkiness that characterized his best recordings of this period. On this side, Hancock lays down a sweet electric version of "Cantaloupe Island", and a nice spiritual groover called "Nobu" – both of them great, and nearer to the electric vibe of Thrust or Flood. There's a fair bit of soul in the mix here, including some great work on vocoder – blended in with Hancock's work on jazzy keyboards – all wrapped up in a cosmic level that really fits the image on the cover, and which acts as a preface for some of the electro work to come in the early 80s! A sublime early 70 set of rustic-accented folk, soul & blues from Tim Hardin that's heavy on covers – with tunes penned by Willie Dixon, Randy Newman, and others – in a soulful rock mode that's just ragged enough to give it a loose charm unlike any of Hardin's earlier work! Tim's in fine, effortlessly soulful voice here on material that could have found him going over the top, ala Joe Cocker, but he's tastefully restrained throughout. An underrated gem! A great assortment of material from Coleman Hawkins – sides that nicely span the mid 40s and late 50s, showing some great growth in his technique! The first four tracks are from a record by the Walter Foots All Stars – a group led by Foots on tenor, but also featuring Hawk – also with Hilton Jefferson on alto and Jonah Jones on trumpet – on tracks that include "Out To Lunch", "Every Man For Himself", and "Look Out Jack". Next are four more tracks recorded in 1944 with backing by a quartet that includes Thelonious Monk – on titles that include "On The Bean", "Recollections", and "Flyin Hawk". A set with a more boppish lineup follows – with JJ Johnson on trombone and Fats Navarro on trumpet – on titles that include "Bean & The Boys", "Cocktails For Two", and "You Go To My Head". Last are some later sides from 1959 – the great album Stasch, played by a very hip group – with Jerome Richardson on flute and tenor, Pepper Adams on baritone, Idrees Sulieman on trumpet, Roy Gaines on guitar, and Ray Bryant on piano. Jerry Valentine did the arrangements – and cuts include "Stasch", "Trust In me", "Roll Em", "Skyrouk", and "My Babe". CD

We love Lee Hazlewood – and this album is one of his best! The record's a stunning batch of Lee's original compositions – all wonderful examples of the way that Lee could take a postwar fascination with Western themes and images, and turn it on itself to reveal the anxieties and frustrations of the 60s generation – all with a smooth presentation and near-perfect backings from the legendary Billy Strange! If you ever needed proof of why Lee Hazlewood's so great, this album may well be it – a record we'd gladly trade for a dozen by other 60s singer/songwriters. Titles include "The Girls In Paris", "After Six", "In Our Time", "Jose", "The Old Man & His Guitar", "Dark In My Heart", and "The Nights". Fantastic stuff! A great record from folk rock oddball Michael Hurley – with spare, ragged little solo guitar & vocal tunes that greatly showcase both Hurley's easygoing, slowly rolling along vocals, as well has his piercing, high emphatic howls– plus more fleshed out tunes with the band, full of groovy, eccentric instrumentation. He brings in some fiddle and mandolin for a rustic feel here and there, a coronet that lends a bit of a jazzy cognizance, and more streamlined, folk rock touches. A really great step forward for Nate Fox and Nico Segal – who you might know from the Chicago collective The Social Experiment – set here to transform the world of contemporary soul on their own! The album's got this really fantastic, yet sensitive blend of modes – tunes that are often gentle on the rhythms, yet sparkle with light touches on keyboards, horns, guitar, and a bit of percussion – all used in ways that are maybe as open as the image on the front cover – a kind of more-is-less mode that really balances with the vocals! The record's got some big names as guests – including Esperanza Spaulding and Vic Mensa – but trust us, these guys on their own are already headed in a great direction. Keith JarrettMourning Of A Star ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1971. Used ... $11.99
Keith Jarrett's really pushing himself here – playing piano with some of the freewheeling qualities that would make him a huge new talent in the 70s, and also picking up some other instruments as well! Although the set's billed to a trio – Jarrett with Charlie Haden on bass and Paul Motian on drums – the overall sound is way more than just your usual piano record, thanks to Keith's use of soprano sax, steel drums, congas, and tape recorder – elements that fill the tunes in alongside his piano, and create some really surprising moments. Some tracks are beautifully warm and personal – the kind of lyrical modes that could have made Jarrett a huge mainstream act, had he ever wanted to be more overtly commercial – and these are balanced nicely with the more experimental numbers, to keep a nice edge in the set. Titles include a nice version of Joni Mitchell's "All I Want", plus originals by Jarrett that include "Standing Outside", "Traces Of You", "Trust", "Interlude No 3", and "Mourning Of A Star". CD

Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Not sure what it takes to be a "sex hunter", but with music this great, you'd hardly need a weapon! The album's one of the weirdest so far in this hip Japanese soundtrack series – a batch of tracks that take mod influences from 60s American and Italian soundtracks, and trip them out with a bit more fuzz, distortion, and heavy drums! There's a really gritty feel to some of the tunes here – especially some of the more rocking ones that have shouted and grunted vocal parts that sound like they're being distorted through a megaphone. Guitar is the dominant instrument here, and most instrumentation feels like small combo performance – but there's also some jazzy flourishes at points, especially on a few of the more funky tunes. Titles and notes are all in Japanese – but trust us, even without any notes you can understand, the CD's still got plenty to blow your mind! CD

Sure, it's not the classic years of the 70s, but Kool & The Gang sound surprisingly great here on this recent set – grooving in a well-done, tightly-crafted way that may not exactly be early 70s funk, but which is still right up there with some of their later, mellower work! The rhythms are quite right on most numbers – never too stiff, and never too overdone – often with just a hint of jazz at the bottom – and vocals are delivered lightly, wrapped around the beats, keys, and riffs with a slightly subtle edge. A contemporary combo, but one who hit the style of classic sound library funk right on the money – with a killer approach that makes the album bristle like a vintage set all the way through! And trust us on this – these guys aren't "retro" or going for some sort of easy 60s modes – and instead, they really find the best way to turn out the sort of small combo funk that you'd hear from one of the small Italian sound library labels of the 70s – from the sharp instrumentation, right down to the production – and especially the best sense of economy and focus when turning out a groove. The music is heavy on keyboards – Hammond, Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and more – but also isn't just one of these copycat keyboard affairs, like the flurry of 80s styled work on the market. We're darn hard to please, and naturally suspicious of material like this – to take our word that when we say it's great, it's plenty darn great! Westbound (UK), Early 70s. Used ... $9.99
2 killer jazz funk albums – both rare, and both on one CD! The records were cut for the short-lived Eastbound side of the soul/funk Westbound label, both under the supervision of Bob Porter, who handled some of the best early 70s jazz funk work for Prestige! Both albums also feature drumming by the super-heavy Idris Muhammad – who keeps things very much in his classic breakbeat mode. Bill Mason was an obscure organ player who performed on the legendary Rusty Bryant funk LPs (Fire Eater & Wildfire), and his session here has the same kind of fierce groove – with tenor by Hubert Laws, trumpet by Gary Chandler, and guitar by Wilbert Longmire. Titles on that one include "Gettin Off", "Stone", "Mistery Jay", and "Now Run & Tell That". Gary Chandler's album is even better – and features organ work by Ceasar Frazier, guitar by Cornell Dupree, and tenor by Harold Ousley. The album includes a much-sampled version of "Baby Let Me Take You In My Arms", plus the cuts "Kaleidoscope", "Jet Set", and "Blue Dues". Both records are great – and together, they'd cost you well over $100 in the original! One of the darkest records to ever come out of the Chicago scene of the 70s – an unreleased gem from Medusa – a group who really know how to go head to head with some of the most frenetic acts of their generation! The set's got a blistering array of guitars right up front in the mix – brilliant solos that are very much in the metal mode, yet without all the posturing that usually comes along with such dexterity – a style that's often more content to hide behind the larger, darker trappings of the entire group! There's plenty of cuts on the set that would have set late night FM radio on fire at the time – plus a few more than would definitely have been too dangerous for the airwaves too – and Numero's done a wonderful job of resurrecting this lost nugget – giving it a lavish velvet-covered jacket, with the kind of presentation that no big record labels would have paid for at the time! Some of the greatest Italian film work of the 70s – a fantastic package of tracks from maestro Ennio Morricone, pulled from a host of lesser-known crime and horror films of the time! Some cuts are funky, others dreamy – and the set features vocals from both Edda Dell'Orso and I Cantori Moderni – and features work from the films Citta Violenta, Maddalena, Veruscha, L'Emarginato, Svegliati E Uccidi, La Corta Notte, Il Gatto A Nove Code, Gli Occhi Freddi Della Paura, and "Dimenticare Palermo. Tracy NelsonDeep Are The Roots ... CD
Prestige/Wounded Bird, 1965. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
Very early work from singer Tracy Nelson – done years before her greater fame in the group Mother Earth, and with a folksy, stripped-down style that's mighty nice! The set's one of a handful of folk classics that Prestige Records issued in the 60s – material that's way hipper than some of the pop-folk albums on other labels (Terry Callier also made his debut in this series) – and featuring a presentation that really keeps Nelson far from any attempt to cross over big, even maybe to mainstream folk audiences of the time. Tracy mostly sings and plays guitar, but also plays a bit of piano too – and the album features contributions from Peter Wolfe on guitar, Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica, and Harvey Smith on piano. Samuel Charters produced the record, and most numbers are in an older folk blues mode – with titles that include "Starting For Chicago", "Motherless Child Blues", "Candy Man", "Rambling Man", "Trust No Man", "Black Cat Hoot Owl Blues", and "Jesus Met The Woman At The Well". Larry Novak TrioInvitation ... CD
Delmark, 2015. Used ... $1.99
The first album in many years from pianist Larry Novak – a Chicago pianist who worked with giants like Sinatra and Sarah Vaughan many decades back, and who's remained a committed stylist after all these years! In fact, the set's got a depth of feeling and sensitivity that might be more common in a younger player – a lyrical beauty that's extremely captivating, and which has a vibrancy that hardly belies Larry's age at all – so much so, we had to make sure we had the right CD in the player when writing up this review! Part of the album's strength is the rhythm duo – which features superb bass from Eric Hochberg, who seems born to work with Novak – and drums from Rusty Jones, who often still lets Novak set the pace. Titles include "Minority", "Very Early", "Nobody Else But Me", "The Touch Of Your Lips", and "The Days Of Wine & Roses". CD

Ann PeeblesI Can't Stand The Rain ... CD
Hi Records/Fat Possum, 1974. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
Easily our favorite album ever by Ann Peebles – not just for the beathead title track, but also because it seems to be the one record where she brings a bit something extra to the studio! The sound is certainly in the classic Hi Records mode here – thanks to production by Willie Mitchell – but there's also a deeper groove overall, a stronger burning bottom, and an all-soul sound to most tracks that goes way beyond simple cliches of southern soul. Ann's vocals are tremendous throughout – sometimes sweet, sometimes mean – and titles include the sublime "I Can't Stand The Rain", plus "Run Run Run", "One Way Street", "You Keep Me Hangin On", and "If We Can't Trust Each Other". Piero Piccioni3 Notti D'Amore (3 Nights Of Love) ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1964. New Copy ... $29.99
Three nights of love from Piero Piccioni – scored with a sound that's right in between the jazzier styles he used in the first half of the 60s, and the groovier modes from the second half of the decade! Instrumentation matches that of some of Piero's straighter scores from a few years before – but the rhythms are right up front, often with mod or bossa touches – which make the jazzy solos sound even better overall! There's a bit of organ, too – used in a cool other-worldly way – and titles include "Come On Rome", "Sally's Surf", "In The Early Hours", "Just For Fun", "Mistico Amore", and "Nelle Tue Braccia". Also includes some never-released tunes – and Carlo Rustichello composed two of the album's fourteen tracks. LP, Vinyl record album

One of the greatest and most frustratingly obscure post punk albums of the early 80s – the still amazing Odyshape by The Raincoats – their second album and one that's too often discussed for who it influenced than for how great it is in its own light! Spare, scratchy guitar and keyboards, clattering bits of percussion, violin and hazy mood to spare – resonating emotionally in a way pulls us in each time. A should-be classic! Blue Note, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 29.99
An incredible debut from vibist Joel Ross – an artist who's already given us great moments on records with Makaya McCraven, Marquis Hill, and others – but who's completely his own man here right from the start! Ross instantly emerges as a major creative force – leading the combo, composing the music, and co-producing the set – with a rich vision for the future of vibes in jazz, but one that also carries the depths of previous generations – especially in the way that Joel approaches a tune, with a subtle sense of gravity that makes each new selection a very powerful statement. The group features Immanuel Wilkins on alto, Jeremy Corren on piano, Benjamin Tiberio on bass, and Jeremy Dutton on drums – a tight quintet who work with a great sense of sympathy – and singer Gretchen Parlato also joins the group at one point. Titles include "Prince Lynn's Twin", "The Grand Struggle Against Fear", "Freda's Disposition", "Yana", "With Who Do You Learn Trust", and "Ill Relations". LP, Vinyl record album

Siouxsie & The BansheesThrough The Looking Glass (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Polydor (Germany), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 24.98
Siouxie & The Banshees pick up songs from a well-chosen array of other artists – including Roxy Music, Iggy Pop, Bob Dylan, Television, and Billie Holiday – almost moving into that reworking-of-classics style that This Mortal Coil was using at the time – even though Siouxie's earlier work was probably a huge inspiration on that group and most of the 4AD acts to emerge during the 80s! The vibe here is similar to Tinderbox – surprisingly catchy at times, yet still with that balanced sense of drama that Siouxie could bring to her music – on tunes that include their hit remake of "The Passenger", plus "This Wheel's On Fire", "Strange Fruit", "Sea Breezes", "Little Johnny Jewel", "Hall Of Mirrors", and "Trust In Me". MoWest/Reel Music/P&C, Early 70s. Used ... $12.99
The incredible lost album from the group Sisters Love – material slated for release in the early 70s, but never saw the light of day, save for a handful of singles – a mix of rootsier southern soul and impeccable west coast funk styles, finally brought to light and with bonus tracks, to boot! Sisters Love came to Motown/MoWest at a transitional time for the label(s), who sent the group on tour, released a rare few singles in the US & UK, but didn't get the group over into the public consciousness the way it deserved. Soul Jazz UK released a stellar compilation of great Sisters Love recordings, but the complete album that they recorded for MoWest that never saw an official release remained in the dark – until now! Reel Music/P&C Records dove into Motown's vaults and came out with the 10 tracks intended for the With Love album in the early 70s – and pulls together 5 more. 8 of the 15 tracks have never been released officially before this essential release – and each one is a straight up stunner! Great songs that were written, produced & arranged by the cream of the crop of soulful talents – Willie Hutch, Hal Davis, Gene Page, Gloria Jones & Pamela Sawyer – but this is the Sisters Love show, and they shine brilliantly! Titles include the amazing "Fast Mack" (purportedly submitted for the soundtrack to The Mack – and it's funky enough!), "Communication", "Mr Fix-It Man", "I'm Learning To Trust My Man", "Giving Up", "I Ain't That Easy To Lose", ""Do What You Gotta Do", "Sweet Inspiration", "Give Me Your Love" and more. A nice little set from Jimmy – often overlooked amidst the flurry of early 60s Blue Notes, but a really strong session! The group on the set is Jimmy's trio with Quentin Warren on guitar and Don Bailey on drums – but they're augmented here by Lou Donaldson, whose crafty work on alto really opens the set up. Tracks are shortish and mostly familiar, but done with a laidback and easy groove that brings out the best in Jimmy's late Blue Note Hammond stylings. Mavis StaplesMavis Staples Live In London ... CD
Anti, 2019. New Copy ... $7.99 11.98
Mavis Staples follows up her strong run of recent solo albums by a live set that's maybe even rootsier than the studio material – recorded in London with a nicely small band – which gives the music a nice sort of bite, right from the start! Guitarist Rick Holmstrom is almost an equal star in the spotlight – as his bluesy guitar licks are a big part of the album's sound, and either kick off a tune with a bold lead, or solo for a bit right in the middle. Mavis hardly needs an introduction here – given all the recent acclaim she's gotten in the press – and she does a nice job of throwing in a few surprises along the way, on titles that include "Love & Trust", "What You Gonna Do", "You Are Not Alone", "Can You Get To That", "Let's Do It Again", "Slippery People", "We're Gonna Make It", "Touch A Hand", "Dedicated", and "Who Told You That". Bear Family (Germany), 1950s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 10CD set ... $199.99 274.99
An insane collection of work from the mighty Wynn Stewart – a figure that most people know from just a handful of recordings in the late 50s, but who continued to cut some really fantastic music as the years moved on! Wynn was an early legend on the West Coast – very important to the rise of the Bakersfield sound in the 50s – and although his best-known tracks were recorded for the rock/pop label Challenge, this box finally brings to light all of Stewart's great 60s sides for Capitol, plus some sides for that label that predate the Challenge work – and more music for RCA, Copre, Jewel, Playboy, Win, and other labels – including a completely unissued album, and an unissued session cut with Rusty York in 1969. The box has a massive 279 tracks in all – 70 of which are previously unreleased – along with the kind of deep history, detailed notes, and vintage images that always make these Bear Family boxes so essential. There have only been a handful of "best of" sets of Wynn's music on the market over the years – which makes this box long overdue. CD

Killer soul from Johnnie Taylor, and really his first major LP! The record was Johnnie's second for Stax – and although the first one was good, this was the record that really had Johnnie hitting that funky bluesy sound that became his trademark into the 70s. The title cut – "Who's Making Love" – is a monster groover with a funky hook that was covered instantly by many jazz combos, and which riffs along with an Isley Brothers-ish kind of sound. The album features loads of other tasty numbers, too – all produced by Al Jackson and Don Davis – and featuring the cuts "Poor Make Believer", "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water", "Can't Trust Your Neighbor", and "Payback Hurts". A weird bit of sunshine pop – with the unusual feature that side one of the album is vocal, and side two is instrumental! There's some wonderful backings on the set – almost in a Rotary Connection mode, with lots of strange production, echoey orchestrations, and a good mix of conventional instrumentation turned trippy, next to rockish influences on guitar. Victory (Italy), 1986. New Copy ... $23.99
A fantastic all-star quartet – performing here in a concert that's full of surprises, and which really opens up the best aspects of all the musicians at this point in their career! There's definitely some of the freer improv you might expect, but the music also has some more rhythmic, swinging passages too – very much part of that legacy that Don Cherry explored in the 70s, and always with the wider ears for different sounds that he brought into the mix – served up in part by the very creative work on drums and percussion by Masahiko Togashi! Togashi can be free one minute, swing the next – and both the bass of Dave Holland and pocket of Don Cherry really respond to the changes – with the soprano sax of Steve Lacy maybe holding its own in a very special space. Cherry also plays a bit of piano, and titles include "Mopti", "Quakes", "Luna Turk", "The Crust", and "I Speak To The Star Last Night". LP, Vinyl record album

Four fantastic albums from Charlie Walker – one of the lesser-remembered talents of the late 60s country scene, but a singer whose work on albums like these can match the best of the bunch! As you'd guess by some of the titles, the tunes are heavy on references to barrooms and drinking – with all the other classic country trappings as part of the mix, too – lost love, cheating, broken hearts, and all the other sort of little frustrations that tend to drive a man to dive into the bottle! 2CD set features 43 tracks in all – and titles include "Don't Squeeze My Sharmon", "The Tail's Been Wagging The Dog Too Long", "Last Call For Alcohol", "Pick Me Up On Your Way Down", "Back In My Baby's Arms Again", "Memory Killer", "Out Of A Honky Tonk", "A Honky Tonk In Dallas", "Honky Tonk Season", "My Baby Used To Be That Way", and "Fast Women Slow Horses & Wine". BGP (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Jazzy 45s galore – and a huge dip into the vaults of Prestige Records! This tasty set brings together 18 classics recorded in the heyday of the jazz funk years at Prestige – the late 60s and early 70s, a time when the soul jazz sounds of previous years were being forged into a leaner, meaner, harder-hitting groove. And although the LP was the growing format during these days, there was actually a heck of a lot of great work issued on 45s – still spinning strong with the jukebox crowds in the clubs and tap rooms, and still getting major play on radio stations, where the single was still king. The set features many 45 mixes of funky classics that you might know from LPs – and intersperses them with some other more obscure numbers pulled from full albums – making for an all-solid, all-funky set of tracks from one of the hippest jazz labels ever! Titles include "Fire Eater" by Rusty Bryant, "Don't Knock My Love" by Idris Muhammad, "Jungle Strut" by Gene Ammons, "Express Yourself" by Idris Muhammad, "Right On" by Boogaloo Joe Jones, "Who's Gonna Take The Weight" by Melvin Sparks, "Sing A Simple Song" by Charles Earland, "Son Of Man" by Houston Person, "Listen Here (part 1)" by Freddie McCoy, "Black Talk (part 1)" by Charles Earland, "Message From The Meters" by Leon Spencer, "Reelin With The Feeling" by Charles Kynard, "I Want You Back" by Harold Mabern, and "Thank You (part 1)" by Melvin Sparks. A lucky number 13 for the Brownswood Bubblers series – a great reminder that the compilation is still one of the best places we know for getting turned onto new music from the global underground! And by that, we don't mean the lame dance music "underground" of more than a decade ago – where this week's big track would go stale by the next. Instead, this territory is much richer – plumbed by DJ Gilles Peterson via his Worldwide Radio series, and the always-great work of the Brownswood label – an imprint that's dedicated to finding the best sort of genre-crossing, category-defying music we've always loved here at Dusty Groove! The tracks within are proof that in the right hands, soul, jazz, and other styles know no boundaries – or limits of imagination – on cuts that include "Ley Lines" by Emma Jean Thackray, "Nuketown" by Tiana Khasi, "Something My Heart Trusts" by Yazmin Lacey, "Ideas" by Sonnymoon, "No White God" by Oscar #Worldpeace, "Move" by Lynda Dawn, "Sailor" by Wu Lu feat Binisa Bonner, "Only Trying 2 Tell U" by Puma Blue, "Jury Judge Executioner" by Alxnder London, and "Continue The Fun (space version)" by Mauskovic Dance Band. Muro's a name we can really trust for mixes of rare American funk and soul – but this time around, he turns his talents towards his homeland, and comes up with an incredible blend of rare Japanese grooves pulled from film scores – the kind of cool cuts we've been digging in the Hotwax & Trax series we've stocked from Ultra Vybe – but all filtered down into one sweet little set by Muro! The package has a whopping 38 tracks in all – all funky, and filled with loads of great beats, basslines, keyboards, and guitar – kind of a perfect distillation of the best cuts from a wide range of rare soundtracks – many of which have been reissued on CD over the years, but which are now out of print. The notes and titles are all in Japanese – but take it from us, the grooves are more than enough – and the set features over 70 minutes of rare funk! CD

Stag O Lee (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $15.99
Wonderful sounds from that amazing time in American music – a period when it seemed that there were so many records being made, new sounds were always finding a way to get onto vinyl! This collection represents an excellent criss-crossing of modes – exotic styles finding their way into soul, jazz, blues, R&B, and even a little bit of rock – thanks to plenty of weird instrumental modes used to great effect in the studio, and some nicely heavy percussion too! There's no set genre on the collection, but the music is all nicely unified in a fantasy of the exotic – which makes for some plenty playful tracks throughout. CD features the full tracks from the 10" vinyl releases Loc-A-Li and Eeny Meeny – and titles include "Jack Hammer" by Rusty Evans, "Eeny Meeny Minie Mo" by Little Luther, "Yabucoa" by Hector Rivera, "Princess Of Persia" by Billy Grammer, "Call Of The Jungle" by Carl Stevens, "I'm Hurted" by Mamie Perry, "Say There" by Wes Reynolds, "Shakin All Over" by Tommy Bruce, "Oh Lord Give Me Back My Baby" by Bobby Nichols, "Loc A Li" by Little Victor & His Jivin Five, "The Magic Ring" by Dante & Friends, "Don't Leave My Arms" by Terry Phillips, and "Ain't That Bad" by Pancho Villa & The Bandits.
