Bobby RushI Wanna Do The Do/Hey Western Union Man ... 12-inch
Philadelphia International, 1979. Near Mint- ... $11.99 14.99
A nice little funky number from Bobby Rush – still with a bluesy undercurrent, but some smoother Philly touches as well! "Do The Do" is quite different than the usual club you might expect from Philly International at the time – and although produced with a full feel, still has a nice gritty, stomping groove at the bottom! "Hey Western Union Man" is Bobby's remake of the early Gamble/Huff hit – again given a very bluesy approach. 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Otis RushMourning In The Morning (French pressing) ... LP
Atlantic (France), 1969. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A funky bit of blues from Otis Rush – the guitarist's debut album, and a surprisingly great batch of tracks recorded at Fame Studios! Production is by Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites, who are clearly going for more of a crossover sound than Rick Hall might have given the set – but that approach is a strong one, as it really brings a hard focus on Rush's guitar, and sets his slyly sliding vocals a bit more back in the mix. Sweet electric Chicago blues before it got over-Alligatorized – with tracks that include "Feel So Bad", "Baby I Love You So", "Me", "Working Man", "You're Killing My Love", and "Can't Wait No Longer" – the last 4 of which were written by Bloomfield and Gravenites. Planet Mu, 2021. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A record of almost sci-fi sort of energy from Chicago underground figure Jana Rush – an artist whose musical legacy goes way back to work for the Dance Mania label back in the 90s, but who's definitely very much in her own space here! There's a few frenetic beats that might tie the record to the footwork scene, but the music overall is much more complex – often abstract electronics at points, mixed with really messed-up samples too – but used in ways that still have a rhythmic structure, even if it's sometimes nicely jarring and unfamiliar! DJ Paypal and Nancy Fortune guest on the record – and titles include "Mynd Fuc", "G Spot", "Disturbed", "Painful Enlightenment", "Suicidal Ideation", "Disorientation", and "Intergalactic". Weird electro pop recorded at the Cabaret Futura nightclub – most of it somewhere in a space between Factory Records and some of the more tuneful work of the Sheffield scene – although somewhat thinner overall. ✨✧ VariousSurinam Funk Force – More Boogie & Disco Funk From The Surinamese Dance Floors ... CD
Rush Hour (Netherlands), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A huge range of funky soul cuts from a very surprising source – the nation of Surinam, which didn't earn its independence until the mid 70s – which then seemed to pave the way for a big wave of wonderful music like this! The cuts often have a groove that's more northern hemisphere club than you'd expect from the nation's South American locale – and given that the nation was previously under the control of the Dutch, there's a lot of back/forth action here with European sounds, styles, and studios – which results in some great grooves that have a really unique hybrid in their approach! Rhythms are strong, but never too slick – never totally polished, as in a Euro disco mode – and instead maybe feel like some of the best underground New York material of the period – especially the sort that was drawing influence from communities of new immigrants. Some tracks have straightforward vocals, others have more of a group chant vibe – and most cuts have at least one key jazzy element, which really sharpens up the sound. Titles include "Happines" by Errol De La Fuente, "Born To Boogie" by Steve Watson, "Craziest" by Sonny Khoeblal, "The Funky G" by Sumy, "Love Dance" by Eddie Tailor, "Kaseko Attack" by Ronald Snijders, "Jamasa Roro" by Astaria, "Tirsa Song" by Sound Track Orchestra & Silvy, "Jhoom Le" by Cyntia, "Freedom Is The Thing" by Langa Langa, and "Jammin With The Jam Band" by Jam Band 80. Dario Carnovale/Alessandro Turchet/Luca ColussiUntitled (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Albore Jazz (Japan), 2018. Used ... $18.99
A record without any title, but more than enough energy to brilliantly state itself – thanks to magical interplay from the trio of Dario Carnovale on piano, Alessandro Turchet on bass, and Luca Colussi on drums! And yes, the format is one that you're certainly familiar with – but this is also one of those piano trio records that states itself as unique right from the start – not through any avant inclinations, but just through the freshness of the group and the way they work together – a strength that partly comes from the album's original music by Carnovale! In fact, we might say that these songs are strong enough, they hardly needed to title the album – as great tracks include "Rush", "Interpolation", "Miriam & Sara", "Return", "Malinko", and "Zisa". CD

A killer set – one that not only features vocals from Jimmy Dawkins on one half, and vocals from Big Voice Odom on the other – but which also includes some great guitar from the mighty Otis Rush! Rush is fantastic, twisting around Jimmy's own guitar, which is pretty darn great too – and the set also has some smoking Hammond from Jerome Van Jones – a player we don't know at all, but whose instrument really brings out some of the funkier currents in the guitars! Titles include "Mean Atlantic Ocean", "Life Is A Mean Mistreater", "No More Troubles", "Tell Me Woman", "Sweet Laura", "Come To Me", "Marcelle Jacques Et Luc", and "It Serves You Right To Suffer". The second album in Denny's legendary Exotica trilogy – a set of records that provided the extreme definition of the small sub-genre that today has become the stuff of legend! Denny's still working here in his classic format – a small group with heavy piano lines, playful percussion, and some birdcalls sung by the members of the group! The set's a mix of strange songs from strange sources, all given the sublime Denny twist – and titles include "Singing Bamboos", "Escales", "August Bells", "Ebb Tide", "Rush Hour In Hong Kong", and "Soshu Night Serenade". GoblinContamination (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cinevox (Italy), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... About June 1, 2022 (delayed)
Spooky keyboards galore – and a classic horror soundtrack from Goblin – done with just the right blend of rock influences and film score modes to live up to their well-deserved legacy! As on other records, the approach here is more that of a rock group – with guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums as the main instrumentation – but the sound is less jamming and very spare at times – so that these familiar elements get a weird sort of twist, and head into styles that are as tense as some of the images on the screen! A few numbers get slightly funky, but overall things are more in a slasher-type mode – and titles include "The Carver", "Rush", "Time Is On", "Ogre", "Quiet Drops", "Bikini Island", and "Flood". Scott HamiltonSwinging Young Scott ... LP
Famous Door, 1978. Near Mint- ... $11.99
One of the earliest albums as a leader from tenorist Scott Hamilton – definitely the young talent promised in the title, but already one with a very traditional sense of tone and timing! Hamilton's horn takes the lead, but gets strong support from Warren Vache on trumpet – whose well-crafted, economical lines never overwhelm the solos of the leader! The group's also got very deft piano work from John Bunch – who may well be the secret hero of the record – plus bass from Michael Moore and drums from Butch Miles. Scott's got this great rasp in his tone on some of the best numbers – a quality that hardly belies his age at all – and which has echoes of Lester Young and Ben Webster at their best. Titles include "Scott's Idea", "Thru For The Night", "Imagination", and "Warren's Rush". LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny HartmanUnforgettable Songs ... LP
ABC/Paramount, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $11.99
An excellent batch of rare material by vocalist Johnny Hartman, and a very strong set of tracks that shows a side of his work that's often ignored! Usually, Hartman gets cited for his slow, moody, syrupy sound – such as that which he used in his classic recordings with Coltrane. However, we really dig the side that's exposed on this album – the shorter, livelier, more uptempo jazz numbers, done with a swing that you don't normally get with Johnny, and proof that he really was a tremendously versatile singer! Arrangements are by Gerald Wilson, and titles include "Fools Rush In", "Down In The Depths", "Bidin' My Time", "The More I See You", "Once In A While", and "Almost Like Being In Love". Harold Mabern with Gregory Porter & Kurt EllingAfro Blue ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2015. New Copy ... $13.99 17.99
The great Harold Mabern kicks it hard with a key core group – then finds a way to open up with some surprise guest artists as well – including singers Gregory Porter, Kurt Elling, Jane Monheit, and Norah Jones! The core of the album features Mabern's piano rocketing out with rhythm from John Webber on bass and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and getting some strong tenor work from the mighty Eric Alexander – and as the set goes on, the group also brings in Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and Steve Turre on trombone. But the key force here is the singers – especially Porter and Elling, who seem to find an old school space with the group that really takes them back to their roots. Elling sings on "You Needed Me", "Portrait Of Jennie", and "Billie's Bounce"'; Porter sings on "Afro Blue" and "The Man From Hyde Park"; Monheit sings on "I'll Take Romance" and "My One & Only Love"; and Norah Jones sings on "Don't Misunderstand" and "Fools Rush In". CD also features Alexis Cole on "Such Is Life" – and the instrumental tracks "The Chief", "Mozzin", and "Bobby Benny Jymie Lee Bu". CD

Lloyd McNeillWashington Suite (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Asha/Soul Jazz (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 39.99
One of the most beautiful albums ever recorded by DC flutist Lloyd McNeil – and one of the grooviest, too! Lloyd's work is always amazing – stretched-out, spiritual, and filled with life – but this time around, there's a definite groove to the record that's undeniable – an increased sense of rhythm, yet one that's still extremely creative, especially in the mellower moments – which are among some of the most compelling that McNeil ever recorded. The tunes were originally scored for a dance group, and feature a core combo with Lloyd on flute, some great Fender Rhodes from Eugene Rush, and sublime bass and drum patterns – mixed with some haunting added woodwinds, played by a combo that also features the legendary Andrew White. The whole record has a beautifully rhythmic quality, filled with throbbing, modal, soulful grooves – and tracks include "Home Rule", "City Triptych", "2504 Cliffborne Pl", "Just 71% Moor", and "Fountain In The Circle". To fans of the group Rush, the title of this record has a very different meaning than the common one – and, no surprise, pianist Brad Mehldau is actually referencing that song by the group here – which he performs on the record, along with some of their other work – and adds in his own music too – all in pursuit of this amazing blend of spirituality informed by progressive rock! The concept is one that's a bit hard to describe in words, and it's also kind of a mindblowing surprise from Mehldau – music we never would have expected from any of his previous records! There's still a current of jazz on the album, but there's all sorts of other things going on too – a guitar solo on one number, heavy drums on another, and even a vocal contribution from Cecile McLorin Salvant, who also sounds nothing like usual. In addition to remakes of "Tom Sawyer" and "Jacob's Ladder", the set also features the titles "Maybe As His Skies Are Wide", "Herr Und Knect", "Cogs IN Cogs", "Voy Correndo Te Encontrar/Racecar", and "Heaven". An unlikely pairing – but that's what makes the record so great! Mulligan and Hodges come together in this rare Verve set from the late 50s – an inspired combination of talents that really work some magic together. Hodges' tone is in the lead in our ears, always wonderful, especially in a set of open-ended tracks like this – but Mulligan's sweet and careful blowing works surprisingly well as a foil, giving the set a nice bottom, and a good overall approach. Phillips' vocals are still as soulful and compelling as ever, but the backings are quite full – penned by Joe Beck, who also plays a fair bit of guitar on the record too – and done with a sound that's in the same mode as David Matthews' backings for other Kudu sides of the time. Charlie RichToo Many Teardrops – The Complete Groove & RCA Recordings ... CD
RCA/Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 22.99
A great look at a really lost legacy in music from Charlie Rich – obscure sides recorded for RCA Records in the early 60s – done after his initial rush of genius on Sun Records, and before his later commercial success on Epic! Charlie's got one of the all-time great voices in pop music – a richness that easily rivals that of Memphis contemporary Elvis Presley, and which never fully got its due at the time – even though labels like RCA and Smash provided Rich with some fantastic material and production! Charlie's work for Smash has been picked up by the cognoscenti in recent years, and we'd honestly put these RCA tracks right up alongside them – with a similar Tennessee blend of soul and rock, rural and urban – all delivered by Charlie's incredibly charming vocal approach, and recorded with a depth that goes way beyond the usual RCA production modes of the time. There's plenty of currents of soul in the mix – even some New York-styled modes, which really work well with Rich – and this 40 track set is the first time this material has ever been pulled together – long-overdue, and a real treat to our ears! Titles include "Like Someone In Love", "Lady Love", "Nice & Easy", "Big Boss Man", "It's All Over Now", "The Grass Is Always Greener", "Now Everybody Knows", "My Mountain Dew", "The Big Build Up", "She Called Me Baby", "Gentleman Jim", "Christmas Greetings", "All Of My Friends Are Gonna Be Strangers", "Is Goodbye That Easy To Say", "Tragedy", "Ten Dollars & A Clean White Shirt", "Tomorrow Night", and "No Room To Dance". Garrett Shider's lost none of his charm over the years – and although contemporary, the set's got the same sharp crackle he first delivered back in the day, when working as part of George Clinton's P-Funk empire! Shider sings and plays lots of tightly-riffing guitar – in a nicely spare setting that's mostly just got a lot of bass, funky drums, and keyboards for support – plus chorus vocals that have that same back/forth vibe of a late 70s Parliament jam! The whole thing's surprisingly hip – much better than just some lame P-Funk cash-in, with a quality level that's honestly better than most of the later Clinton productions – and a style that's more early 80s P-Funk than 21st Century. A major label set, but one that stays very true to the new ideals that James Blood Ulmer was trying to bring to jazz guitar at the time – a really revolutionary style that moves beyond simple genre conventions, and embraces a whole world of new ideas that would inspire others in the decade to come! Ulmer plays with a real frenzy at points – deep currents that reflect the bluesy touches of his early work in jazz organ combos, but given a skittish energy that reflects his association with the downtown crowd – and which was very fitting for his record with Rough Trade! A fantastic document of the first-ever Ann Arbor Blues Festival – the start of a great event that would blossom into other styles of music in the 70s, but which stood as a strong blues-based event in its initial year of 1969! In some ways, the three day series of concerts is a roots answer to Woodstock – which took place just a few weeks before – as the festival featured a great scope of blues talents, from the rootsier sort of artists who were recording for labels like Folkways or Arhoolie, to some of the sharper modern talents rising to the top on Chess or Delmark! The package alone is almost worth the price of admission – beautiful photographs of the event, detailed notes, and the first-ever release of this music – which has sat in the vaults for decades, finally to see the light of day. Titles include "Dirty Mother For You" by Roosevelt Sykes, "So Glad You're Mine" by Arthur Big Boy Crudup, "Everybody Must Suffer/Stone Crazy" by Luther Allison & The Blue Nebulae, "Help Me" by Junior Wells, "I Wonder Why" by Jimmy Dawkins, "Too Much Alcohol" by JB Hutto & His Hawks, "So Many Roads So Many Trains" by Otis Rush, "Long Distance Call" by Muddy Waters, "Off The Wall" by James Cotton Band, "Juanita" by Big Joe Williams, "Jelly Jelly Blues" by Shirley Griffin, "I Feel So Good" by Magic Sam, "Call It Stormy Monday" by T-Bone Walker, "Death Letter Blues" by Son House, "Key To The Highway" by Sam Lay, and "Mojo Hand" by Lightnin Hopkins. ✨✧ Rudiger Carl IncKing Alcohol (New Version) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
FMP/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1972. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe the greatest moment ever on record from Rudiger Carl – and not just because the album is "dedicated to all drinker friends"! Despite that embrace of alcohol, the record's got a very sobering power – as the group is a free jazz trio, working in the best bracing early FMP way – with Carl on tenor, Gunter Christmann on trombone, and Detlef Shoenenberg on drums – all turning their instruments inside out as they madly, freely, explosively work off the power of one another! Christmann is especially amazing – and this album might well be to his trombone what the late 60s FMP sides were to Brotzmann's tenor – although Detlef's drums are pretty amazing too – very different than any contemporaries or precursors, and worth the price of admission alone. Titles include "Thrombose", "King Alcohol", "AEIOU", and "Rush Hour/Something/Triotrip". Plus, this 2CD reissue adds in an astounding 70 more minutes of unreleased recordings from the same sessions! Bob James is picking up some extra keyboards here – mixing his usual Fender Rhodes with a bit of Oberheim Polyphonic – but the overall sound of the record is still pretty great, and filled with those warm, spacious tones that make Bob's albums so great! Things are slightly smooth, but never cloying – and there's a number of tracks here that show a strong "Taxi" influence in the way Bob puts together t he rhythms and brings the keyboards up in the mix – a style that's slightly gentler than the CTI years, but which also shows a deepening spirit in his work. Titles include "Look Alike", "Rush Hour", "Blue Lick", "Big Stone City", "Friends", and "Fly Away". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Waylon JenningsFolk Country/Leavin Town/Waylon Sings Ol Harlan/Nashville Rebel ... CD
RCA/Morello (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Four fantastic early albums from Waylon Jennings – all served up in a single package! First up is Folk Country – a mid 60s classic from Waylon Jennings – cut for RCA at a time when the singer was really beginning to find his own style! While not really a folk album, the use of the word in the title is maybe key to an understanding of Waylon's approach here – as he's already trying to go past the conventions of mainstream country music, and maybe bring in some of the depth of material and presentation that you'd be more likely to find from a folk singer – but all while still staying very true to the country music core that would hold strong over the decades! There's some great material on the album – and titles include "Another Bridge To Burn", "Cindy Of New Orleans", "I Don't Mind", "What Makes A Man Wander", "Look Into My Teardrops", and "Down Came The World". Leavin Town is a record with a really fantastic sense of spirit – from the rough-around-the-edges look of Waylon Jennings on the cover, to the album's presentation of music that really shows the deeper style of the singer at the start – tunes of yearning and searching that still sound fantastic all these many years later! The production is still somewhat in the Nashville RCA mode, but there's also some deeper currents that seem as if they're trying to pull in some of the hipper side of the scene too – served up nicely on titles that include "Leavin Town", "Anita You're Dreaming", "Doesn't Anybody Know My Name", "I Wonder Just Where I Went Wrong", "Time Will Tell The Story", "Baby Don't Be Looking In My Mind", and "Time To Bum Again". Next up is Wayon Sings Ol Harlan – a tribute to songwriter Harlan Howard! As with the best of his contemporaries, Waylon Jennings was always ready to acknowledge how important a good songwriter was to his music – definitely the case here on this late 60s tribute to the work of Harlan Howard! Howard wasn't the biggest star in the studio himself, but he gave key songs to a number of country acts in the 60s – and the rock-solid quality of his songs makes the album a real standout in the early RCA catalog of Waylon Jennings – a no-filler collection that's filled with gems that include "Sunset & Vine", "Busted", "Woman Let Me Sing You A Song", "She's Gone Gone Gone", "In This Very Same Room", "Heartaches For A Dime", "Tiger By The Tail", and "The Everglades". Last up is Nashville Rebel – a pretty nice soundtrack from the mid 60s – featuring a mixture of vocal and instrumental tunes, sung by Waylon Jennings, who also stars in the film, and arranged by Chet Atkins, who's also producing the album. Waylon's in fine form, and often singing with a style that's more expressive than earlier records, maybe because of his presence on the screen – and the instrumentals are great too – with kind of a honky tonk mod approach, similar to tracks you'd find in another groovy 60s soundtrack, but with a bit of a country twist. This means that you've got heavy twang in the guitar upfront, tightly snapping rhythms over a bit of strings, and a bit of organ or piano. Titles include "Lang's Theme", "Rush Street Blues", "Hoodlum", "Tennessee", "Silver Ribbons", "Nashville Bum", and "Green River". CD

Capitol, 1960. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great late Frank Sinatra at Capitol Records – a set that still grooves in all the Nelson Riddle brilliance of the early 50s years, but also points the way towards the mature masculinity that Frank would find working at Reprise! The title tune, "Nice and Easy", is a classic swinger with great backing by Nelson Riddle – and the rest of the album's selection of tunes is a bit more in the sad late nite mode of some of Sinatra's other end of the 50s sessions, but handled with a bit more flair, a bit more of that ass-pinching machismo that would creep into his love songs in the 60s. Titles include "Dream", "She's Funny That Way", "Fools Rush In", "That Old Feeling", and his seminal reading of "I've Got A Crush On You" – one of the gems from the late Capitol years! The tunes are mostly all originals by Alex, delivered with a strong focus by the quintet – a lineup that also features Diego Rivera on tenor, Art Hirihara on piano and Rhodes, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums and percussion – a group who work with an innate sort of energy throughout, really packing a heck of a lot into a small space – while still allowing for plenty of individual moments of expression! Although the glory days of southern soul have long since passed, the core of the old "chitlin circuit" is still alive – as many of the classic players regularly tour larger cities, playing to smaller audiences in out of the way clubs (like East Of The Ryan, home to some great soul shows here in Chicago!) Daptone, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the most searing album we've ever heard from Antibalas – a set that's completely on fire from the very first note, both musically and politically – and which burns with an intensity that seems to blow away all their previous music! Make no mistake, we've always loved these guys – but this time around, there's an urgency that really grabs us – maybe because of the political climate in which the set was recorded, or maybe just because these guys always keep growing and maturing, where so many other similar combos are just content to stick in the same territory. The lead vocals by Duke Amayo are incredible – with a righteous power that demands to be heard – and the horns are more creative and colorful than ever, with some fantastic solos on the album's very long tracks. And of course, the grooves are great – that blend of riffing guitars and percussion that Antibalas have updated from 70s Afro Funk – on titles that include the three-part "Tombstown" suite, plus "Hook & Crook" and "Gold Rush". ✨✧ Frank StrazzeriStrazzatonic (Taurus/Frames/After The Rain) ... CD
Fresh Sound (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Three killer albums from pianist Frank Strazzeri – all brought together in a wonderful demonstration of his genius during the 70s! First up is Taurus, a record that's also known as View From Within – a date that has Frank playing Fender Rhodes with a wonderful sound – that open quality he always had in acoustic piano, stretched out even more with the space allowed by The Rhodes! The group features work from Conte Candoli on trumpet, Frank Rosolino on trombone, and Don Menza on tenor and flute, in a nicely laidback vibe – with tracks that include "Strazzatonic", "Taurus", "Lazy Moments", "View From Within", "Calcutta", and "Sphinx". Frames is a great overlooked set from the 70s – one that has the mighty Frank Strazzeri working some real magic on Fender Rhodes – with an open style that's completely wonderful, and warmed up even more with help from Don Menza on soprano sax and flute, Frank Rosolino on trombone, and Gary Barone on trumpet. Titles include "Frames", "Injun Jo", "Jo Gee", "Ballad Of The Matador", and "La Mosca". After The Rain is filled with funky keyboard work from Frank Strazzeri – a player who's really stretching out here in the 70s, with a massively cosmic vibe you'd never have guessed from his earlier work! Strazzeri had recorded and played heavily around the LA scene by the time of this mid 70s release – but most of his other work was a bit restrained, and hardly as wonderfully soulful as this! Frank's working here on moog and electric piano – in a group that includes Sam Most on tenor, Bobby Shew on trumpet, and Don Alias on percussion – grooving with Frank in a gently funky way that's got a heck of a lot of soul, and which makes for some nice extended tunes. Titles include "After The Rain", "Rush Hour", "Philadelphia Flyer", "Cloudburst", and "The Third Eye". CD

Capitol, 1961. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful beautiful work from Stan Kenton – an album that applies the dark tones of his arranging style to a range of popular numbers that end up completely transformed! The set has Stan working with some unusual instrumentation that features the Kenton-designed "mellophonium" – an odd larger horn that creates a beautiful shimmering finish in the brass section – one that pushes the Kenton "wall of color" style even further than before, as Stan takes the group through a set of lushly emotive numbers. The tones and sounds are still very much in the Kenton mode, despite the "romantic" tag in the title – with a style that shows that brings in the modern along with the mellow – on tracks that include "Fools Rush In", "You're Mine You", "Moonlight In Vermont", "I'm Glad There Is You", and "All The Things You Are". Dave Brubeck & Jimmy RushingBrubeck & Rushing ... LP
Columbia, 1960. Very Good+ ... $11.99
One of the coolest collaborations of Dave Brubeck's years at Columbia Records – and one of the greatest jazz sessions from vocalist Jimmy Rushing too! On paper, the modernist Brubeck and Kansas City roots singer Rushing would seem to be a very unlikely pair – but by this time in his career, Jimmy had gotten extremely inventive and was very open to new ideas – and manages to lend his amazing vocals to some sublime instrumental backdrops from the Brubeck quartet! Dave unlocks a whole host of bluesy tones for the session, and really matches Rushing's energy – and Paul Desmond's alto sounds somewhat unusual in that setting, but with a real appeal too – a very unusual sound for a record like this. Titles include "There'll Be Some Changes Made", "My Melancholy Baby", "Blues In The Dark", "I Never Knew", "Ain't Misbehavin", "Evenin", "All By Myself", "River Stay Way From My Door", "You Can Depend On Me", and "Am I Blue". A nicely collaborative project from Crushed Velvet – aka Alan Evans of Soulive, working here at a level that's much different than the style of that jamming instrumental trio! The lyrical contributions make the record much stronger than just another funk set with a singer thrown into the mix – and singers include Brother Goodlove, Kim Dawson, Yanick, and Saundra Williams – on titles that include "You Are My Home", "Good Thang", "Really Can't Get Over You", "We Are Not OK", "Say Their Names Be The Change", "As Far As We Know", and "Keep On Fightin". New Item ... $15.99 19.99
An essential brush for record cleaning – very easy to use, and a hell of a value at this price! This cool little baby contains a million lean carbon fibers – which pick up dust from the grooves of a record with ease – using natural static electricity to pull away the grit, and leave you with a much cleaner record in the end. The system doesn't use any fluid at all – just natural properties of attraction – and the brush comes in a holder that helps you clean the brush too! Record Care

Patrice RushenNow ... LP
Elektra, 1984. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Sweet sounds from the lovely lady – one of Patrice Rushen's last truly great albums, and a masterpiece of 80s groove with lots of jazzy touches! The keyboard sound has evolved a bit here – compressed with more electronic percussion than on Patrice's earlier records, but still done with a degree of soul that sets it apart from work by most of her contemporaries – and the music has this warm flow that really sets Rushen apart from the rest – a sublime mix of soul, funk, and fusion that holds together perfectly throughout! Titles include "Gotta Find It", "Gone With The Night", "My Love's Not Going Anywhere", "High In Me", "To Each His Own", "Heartache Heartbreak", and "Feels So Real". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a small cutout notch.)

✨✧ Patrice RushenStraight From The Heart ... LP
Elektra, 1982. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A landmark record from Patrice Rushen – one of those albums that completely cemented her standing in the world of jazz, funk, and soul – and a wonderful summation of everything she'd done in the years before! The young Patrice was already a breakout keyboardist on the west coast scene of the mid 70s – turning out great work on her own, and adding her talents to plenty of others – but here, she emerges as a soaring soul star in her own right – a talent who's really worked her way up, with a quality level that's head and shoulders above most of her peers! Rushen produced the set with Charles Mims, and there's a righteous blend of jazz and soul that's at the level of Minnie Riperton, so that even the catchiest cuts come off with a sense of sophistication and warmth that's so different than so much other 80s soul and fusion. Titles include the classic "Forget Me Nots", plus "Number One", "I Was Tired Of Being Alone", "Where There Is Love", "Breakout", "If Only", and "Remind Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cutout notch, light wear.)

Colpix, 1963. Near Mint- ... $5.99
One of Jimmy Rushing's last truly great albums – a jazz-tinged session of bluesy material, one that gets at his best work of the 50s! The arrangements are by Al Cohn, and have a fluid swing that pushes Jimmy past cliche – working with players that include Zoot Sims, Budd Johnson, Freddie Green, and Gene Quill in a style that's got all the leaner touches of the Basie band at the same time. Titles include "Heartaches", "Please Come Back", "My Bucket's Got a Hole In it", "Did You Ever", and "Just Because". LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Rushing with Buck ClaytonJazz Odyssey Of James Rushing Esq. ... LP
Columbia, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A classic from Jimmy Rushing – recorded at a time when he was really finding a new audience for his vocals! In a style that Columbia was using on a number of sides in the late 50s and early 60s, Jimmy and Buck do a bit of educatin' – and trace a progression of jazz styles from New Orleans, to Chicago, to Kansas City, and New York. The Odyssey's not really Jimmy's, so much as it is the jazz that was defined by the white liberal tastes that always were the main force between Columbia in the early years – but the set's still a nice one, like all of Jimmy's later work for Columbia, which features some of the best-recorded vocal work of his career. Titles include "New Orleans", "Doctor Blues", "Rosetta", "Piney Brown Blues", "Lullaby Of Broadway", and "Some Of These Days". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dave Brubeck & Jimmy RushingBrubeck & Rushing (with bonus track) ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1960. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The rare second album from Clydie King – recorded at a time when she was lending her backing vocals to artists like The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, and Humble Pie – but a set that firmly puts Clydie in the lead! King's got an amazing style of singing – deep and raspy at one moment, with key southern soul roots – yet also totally tight and together, too – with a focus that really shines on the album's more upbeat tracks – groovers that almost have an east coast club vibe at times, quite similar to material that Clydie recorded with the group Brown Sugar! Titles include "Rushing To Meet You", "Loving You Is So Easy", "Steal Your Love Away", "Punish Me", "Our Love Is Special", and "Morning Sun". CD

Not quite the Wild Style soundtrack, but still an early hip hop cinema classic – thanks to work from some of the bigger acts of the time! The movie's from a second generation of rap filmmaking – more narrative, less documentary – but over the course of years, the whole thing's come to stand as a great document of this moment in music – and in super-fresh style as well! Hip Hop tracks include "She's On It" by Beastie Boys, "I Can't Live Without My Radio" by LL Cool J, "If I Ruled The World" by Kurtis Blow, "All You Can Eat" by Fat Boys, and "Krush Groovin" by the Krush Groove All-Stars – which features Run-DMC, Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow, and Sheila E! A&M/Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1983. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
A sweet 80s groover throughout – the only album we've ever seen by this keyboard-heavy quintet, served up in a flurry of catchy catchy tunes! Keys on the set are handled by producer/arranger Michael Stokes – who's very clearly in charge of the voices of the group – giving them real focus on the album's mix of uptempo groovers and a few mellower cuts, sometimes even underscoring things with a groove that's verging on electro! Stokes also handles the keyboards, but Patrice Rushen is on the set on piano – warming things up nicely – and titles include the great midtempo stepper "Give Me Your Love", plus "Bottom Line", "Rise Up", "Keep On Rockin", "My Sunshine", "Coo Coo Kachu", and "I Never Thought I'd Love Again". CD also features a bonus extended mix of "Give Me Your Love". CD

Biff Bang PowBetter Life – Complete Creations 1984 to 1991 (6CD set) ... CD
Creation/Cherry Red (UK), 1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 6CD ... $42.99 59.99
The complete Creation Records work of Biff Bang Pow – a group who were one of our favorite moments of 80s jangle pop from the UK – a group headed up by Creation founder Alan McGee, and an ensemble who probably kept the Creation spirit more strongly than any other group! McGee took the group's name from a 60s tune by the group The Creation – and the style of the music follows very strongly in the spirit of that influence – lean, guitar-driven, slightly psychedelic pop tunes – crafted with a simple and slightly dark approach. But there's also some of the darker production styles that emerged in the post-punk generation – which ensures that although catchy, the group's work is never too poppy – especially in comparison to some of their contemporaries who fled to bigger fame at major labels. The scope of Biff Bang Pow's material is tremendous – served up here on full albums that include Pass The Paintbrush Honey, The Girl Who Runs The Beat Hotel, Oblivion, Love Is Forever, Me, and The Laughing Apple – plus dozens and dozens of rare tracks – singles-only material, demos, alternates, live material, and more – some of it unreleased! The huge box features a massive 129 tracks in all. CD

Black NastyTalking To The People (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Enterprise/4 Men With Beards, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 21.98
Excellent heavy funk from Stax! Black Nasty were one of the heaviest groups on the label – with a rock-solid guitar-based groove that went even farther than the Bar-Kays, who were no slouch in the guitar department themselves! The grooves are all slow to midtempo, with the band coming down hard on the downbeats, jamming away in a style that sounds more like heavy Detroit Westbound than sweetly soulful Memphis. Most all cuts have vocals – sung in a shouting style by the band that works well with the tripped-out hooks of the songs. This was the only album the band ever cut, but it's become a fast favorite among those who like their funk raw. Tracks include "We're Doin Our Thing", "Rushin Sea", "Booger The Hooker", "Black Nasty Boogie", "Nasty Soul", and "Getting Funky Round Here". LP, Vinyl record album
