Wynton KellyFirst Sessions – A Proper Introduction To Wynton Kelly ... CD
Proper (UK), 1951. Used ... $8.99
The full first sessions by Wynton Kelly as a leader – recorded for Blue Note records in 1951, and featuring a trio with Lee Abrams on drums and either Frank Skeete or Oscar Pettiford on bass. The tracks have a light, fluid feel that shows the depth of Kelly's work on the keys even at a young age – with some key influences from bop, but an overall sense of poise and style that was enough to challenge the bigger mainstream pianists of the time. The set comes with a nice booklet on Kelly's early years, and also features notes on all the sessions – a total of 19 tracks that include "Foolin Myself", "Blue Moon", "Fine & Dandy", "Where Or When", "Born To Be Blue", "Moonglow", "Opus Caprice", "I Found A New Baby", and "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me". Roy AyersPerfection ... CD
Aim (Australia), 2001. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
A recent bit of work from Roy Ayers – but still plenty darn great, and proof that the vibes master hasn't faltered at all over the years! The set was initially released briefly by Roy in 2001, but is getting its proper debut here – and has Ayers working in a mostly instrumental mode that layers his live work on vibes over beats and more programmed rhythm tracks. The sound is plenty darn soulful – sweetly jazzy, deeply soulful, and filled with those unusual colors, tones, and shades that instantly mark the work as Roy's own – a unique approach to vibes that few other players have ever been able to match! Titles include "Drome", "Ears", "Steppin", "Wave", "Thick & Thin", "Perfection", "Afro", "Smoke", "Bags", and "Calm". CD

Conte CandoliLittle Band Big Jazz (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Crown/P-Vine (Japan), 1960. New Copy ... $24.99
An incredible record – and the kind of rare LA bop session that got totally lost because it was never packaged properly! This obscure set was issued by the Crown label under a number of names – both the Conte Candoli All Stars and Vince Guaraldi – and the group includes Conte Candoli, Buddy Collette, Vince Guaraldi, Leroy Vinnegar, and Stan Levey – all playing with a fantastically tight and incredibly soulful bop groove, of the sort you always hear them credited for, but which you can never find on any of their snoozy more famous records. Vince Guaraldi plays some incredibly soulful piano, in a manner that's very different than his Fantasy recordings – and he's playing here with a killer group of LA players who deliver some of their finest recorded work! Trust us, the session's a gem – and it's one of those you can put on and surprise your friends, and yourself! Tracks include "Muggin The Minor", "Mambo Diane", "Macedonia", and "Little David". CD

Johnny CashJohnny Cash At Folsom Prison (remastered edition) ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1968. Used ... $5.99
One of the greatest live albums ever, and probably THE best album Johnny Cash ever recorded, properly reissued with the original sequence restored and uncensored! In 1969 Cash had more angst than you could shake a stick at – he just kicked drugs, and he hadn't had a big hit in years, so his respectful and thoughtful empathy for the audience of inmates not only cemented his persona as the real deal, but carries an air of dizzying emotion throughout the set. Appropriately filled with his darkest tunes, Folsom is one of the few cases in which a live recording of a hitmakers catalog is stronger and more vital than the studio versions. Includes "Folsom Prison Blues", "Dark As A Dungeon", "Cocaine Blues", "25 Minutes To Go", "Orange Blossom Special", "The Long Black Veil", "Dirty Old Egg-Suckin' Dog", "Joe Bean", plus "Jackson" and "Give My Love To Rose" featuring June Carter. 2 previously unissued songs – "Joe Bean" and "The Legend Of John Henry's Hammer". John ColtraneLiving Space ... CD
Impulse, Mid 60s. Used ... $6.99
Brilliant work from the great John Coltrane – a set of material that was recorded in the 60s, but not issued until the late 70s – and only then, not properly in print until the release of this great package! The material is classic Coltrane Quartet – with McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – all working with Trane to craft some long tracks that show the expanding genius of the group at the time. The spirit of the work is in the "new thing" mode of the 60s – more adventurous than even Coltrane's work from a few years before – and titles include "Living Space", "Dusk-Dawn", "The Last Blues", and "Untitled 90314". CD
(Out of print. Please note that the digipack has some substantial edgewear and initials in pen on the cover. Booklet is also missing and is priced accordingly.)

ComplexLive For The Minute – The Complex Anthology (Complex/Way We Feel/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), 1970s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 30.99
Two rare albums and lots of bonus tracks from Complex – an obscure British group from the start of the 70s, and one who have a raw, psychedelic sound that feels a lot more like music from the decade before! The set begins with the self-released Complex album – a record that the band put together themselves, and issued as a way to get attention from bigger labels – and while that never really happened at the time, the quality of the material has really helped them go on to become the stuff of legend! The sound is quite raw – guitars, organ, bass, and drums – often with production that's in kind of a mid 60s garage style, which makes even the sweeter, more thoughtful moments come across with an edge – as you'll hear on tunes that include "Witch's Spell", "Message From The Year 2000", "Live For The Minute", "Storm On The Way", "Mademoiselle Jackie", and "Norwegian Butterfly". Next is the group's second album, The Way We Feel – issued in a very small pressing, as more of a boutique project than anything else – but with a raw quality and trippy sound that really rivals the group's debut! The organ is a bit more up front in the mix here, and balanced with some electric piano too – both of which underscore a deepening songwriting talent in the group, who deliver material that would have gone on to become classic, had it gotten the handling of a proper record label! As before, there's an edge and grit to the record that feels more late 60s than early 70s – and titles include "We Don't Exist", "Lemon Pie Fair", "Moving Moore", "Jeanette", "Every Time I Hear That Song", and "If You Are My Love". Both albums are presented here with very rare bonus tracks – and CD3 features even more obscure material – unissued tracks, a 10" acetate, and even their 1975 single for Pye Records. Great notes – and a long-overdue complete look at the group! CD

Country Joe & The FishReunion ... LP
Fantasy, 1977. Near Mint- ... $9.99
The last proper LP by San Francisco psych rock trailblazers Country Joe & The Fish – and the only album since late 60s with the classic early line-up back together! It's good stuff too, recorded for Fantasy with an unpretentious ear for country rock and unfussy folk-blues-rock hybrid style that's reminiscent enough of their late 60s roots without trying to too hard replicate the strident 60s lyricism. Includes "Come To The Reunion", "Time Flies By", "Stateline, Nevada", "Dirty Claus Rag", "Thunderbird", "Gibson's Song", "Insufficient Funds", "Dreams" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Miles DavisJazz Track (mono) ... LP
Columbia, 1958. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.98
Although not actually a proper album – this is still one of the greatest Miles Davis albums of all time! Side one features 10 tracks from Miles' amazing soundtrack to the film Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud – with excellent work by French players Barney Wilen, Rene Urtreger, and Pierre Michelot, on haunting moody tracks like "Generique", "Lassassinat De Carala", "Au Bar Du Petit Bac", and "Dinner Au Motel". Great stuff – and with a wonderful sound that's like no other Miles album! Side 2 is equally great – as it features 3 classic sextet tunes – "On Green Dolphin Street", "Put Your Little Foot Right Out", and "Stella By Starlight" –peformed with Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, and Bill Evans in that amazing Kind Of Blue mode of perfection. Truly one of our favorite albums of all time! LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry GoldsmithGoldsmith At 20th Vol 2 – The Detective/Flim Flam Man ... CD
La La Land, 1967. New Copy ... $19.99
A pair of overlooked Jerry Goldsmith soundtracks – back to back on a single CD! First up is The Detective – a soundtrack we've been trying to find for years – given the way the music works perfectly in the surprisingly dark film! Goldsmith uses lots of jazzy tones in his scoring – especially trumpet lines – which works wonderfully not just for the urban location of the narrative, but to underscore the really melancholy mood of the whole movie – one of those Bullitt-era cop stories that shows the overwhelming effect of crime upon the outlook of a detective. There's a few weird touches in the mix – some swirling, almost watery moments – and titles include "A New Love", "A Family Affair", "Beach Scene", "Joe", "Night Talk", "The Safe Cracker", and "The Ball Game". The Flim Flam Man was recorded right around the same time, but is quite different – more rural than urban, with American themes that come through in the use of harmonica, woodwinds, and a bit of banjo and guitar – almost a Copland-esque fantasy of the country, but with warmer touches that both belie the comedic nature of the film, and the sensitivity that Goldsmith can bring to any sort of setting. CD features 16 tracks from the film – including "Stolen Property", "A Little Inspiration", "The Flim Flam Man", "A Good Trick/No Rest For The Wicked", "Curley's Plan", and "The Waiting Game". CD

Beautiful sounds from two modern masters of the guitar – both playing here on a mix of electric and acoustic variations of the instrument, with sonic properties that unfold in wonderful ways throughout the set! Both Grubbs and Walker have a way of doing a lot with just a little – even when some effects are used to complicate the sound a bit – always still very organic, and with an understanding of the elements that's always brought back to a completely coherent sense of the guitar. Grubbs plays piano at a few spots, but most of the set features guitar – and titles include "Pump Fake On The Death Rattle", "Uglification", "Tap On The Shoulder", "Accepting Most Plans", and "The Madman From Massachusetts In An Empty Bar". PJ HarveyStories From The City – Stories From The Sea – Demos ... LP
Island, 2000. New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
PJ Harvey, as much as any artist who has long-earned living legend status, has the kind of work worth cherishing in stages of development – and you probably don't need us to tell you that the Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea demos are much more than a mere companion piece to the album! While the main album itself isn't what we'd call elaborately produced, it has a big sound even in sparer moments, whereas the demos are a great showcase for her raw strength and huge voice – and the material his a different vibe all around in a lot of ways, making this a strong album of its own – and you get strains of her influences that get smoothed over on the album-proper. Includes "Big Exit", "Good Fortune", "A Place Called Home", "Beautiful Feeling", "The Whores Hustle And The Hustlers Whore", "Kamikaze", "Horses In My Dreams", "We Float". LP, Vinyl record album

Shafiq HusaynEn A-Free-Ka ... CD
Plug Research, 2009. Used ... $7.99
Cosmic hip hop, moody keyboard funk, tripped out bits of strings, brass, rubbery bass grooves and gritty beats from Sa-Ra's uber creative partner Shafiq – and a record that rivals the best work of Sa-Ra proper! We long suspected that En'A Freek Ka would be a gem, and it does not dissappoint – going much deeper than we thought! The synth funk, cosmic keys, and splintering beats are here, but there's lots of fleshed out instrumentation in the mix that kicks it all a step deeper – lots of keys, soul jazz horns, and more, overall an a little grittier than the usual Sa-Ra vibe. Shafiq's voice floats in and out in kind of a cosmic narrator mode, and guests include Bilal, Jimetta Rose, Count Bass D, Om'Mas Keith & Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner and others. Titles include "Nirvana", The UN Plan", "Cheeba" feat Bilal, "Lil Girl", "Lost & Found" feat Jimetta Rose & Bilal", "No Moor", "All Dead", "Major Heavy" feat Sonny Coates & Count Bass D, "Evil Man", "Changes" feat Om'Mas Keith Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner, ":ove Still Hurts", "Egypt", "Rebel Soldier" and more. Inner CircleEverything Is Great ... LP
Island, 1979. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Smooth soulful reggae, from one of the few groups to successfully span both the commercial and hardcore roots worlds. The last set cut before Jacob Miller's untimely death and his final proper recording with the band, this album works the crisp and clean approach that a great deal of the reggae issued under Chris Blackwell carried, and pulls it off well. The disco and soul influences never sound forced, and the groups tight sense of dynamics holds up better than some of the more raw reggae acts under the shiny, polished production. 8 numbers in all, including the cuts "Music Machine", "Mary Mary", "Roots Rock Symphony", "Everything Is Great", "Playing It", "We A Rockers", "I've Learned My Lesson", and "Stop Breaking My Heart". Warner/Wounded Bird, 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 19.99
Peter Ivers's entire output for Warner Brothers in the mid 70s – including the original LPs Terminal Love & Peter Ivers, plus the Nirvana Peter compilation, which didn't appear until the mid 80s and STILL sounded ahead of its time – in a complete 2CD set! Peter has a distinctive voice and offbeat lyrical sensibility that feels a lot more akin to the arty fringe of the major labels in the early 80s than it does to 1974 or 1976, he's really a pioneer. It's no surprise at all that he'd end up being the host of LA television's legendary music program New Wave Theatre in the early 80s, but it's surprising he doesn't get more credit these days for influencing the kind thing that'd come to be called "new wave" years after his contributing work! Disc 1 includes the Terminal Love and Peter Ivers LPs, with "Alpha Centauri", "OO Girl", "Modern Times", "Holding The Cobra", "Even Stephen Foster", 'Audience Of One", "I'm Sorry Alice", "Eighteen And Dreaming", "Peter", "Rock And Roll Embarrassment", "Child In A Chair" and more. Disc 2 (the Nirvana Peter comp) features a few tracks from his 2 proper LPs and rarities. The 2CDs have 33 tracks in all. CD

Syl JohnsonComplete Mythology (6LPs & 4CDs box set) ... LP
Numero, Late 50s/1960s/1970s. New Copy 6LPs/4CDs ... $68.99 79.98
A really really amazing package – the full story of the early years of Syl Johnson – one of the funkiest soul singers to ever come from Chicago! Syl's music has become the stuff of legend over the years – initially collected in rare funky 45s and two even rarer albums – then sampled heavily, compiled frequently, and spun out to a huge global audience that Johnson never had back in the day. Yet throughout the years, things were never done properly – and certainly with any sense of history or continuity that would unite the music – until now. The folks at Numero have really outdone themselves this time – not just by including both CD (4 of them) and LP (6 of those) versions of the music in the set – but also by coming up with one of the most attractive, uniquely packaged records we've ever seen! The box and booklet alone are completely beautiful – the latter filled with vintage photos, personal recollections by Syl, and some great Numero writing – not to mention much-needed details on the recordings within. And the LPs each come in their own jackets – two of which mimic the original Twinight albums, the other four of which create Shama, Trip, and Federal label albums of Johnson's music – records that didn't exist back in the 60s, but which look as if they've come from a time machine! The CDs come in a very cool LP-styled jacket – and the whole thing slides together as sweetly as the funky music within. None of the Hi Records material is included – just material from labels that include Twilight/Twinight, King/Federal, Shama, TMP/Ting, Zachron, One-Derful, Cha Cha, Special Agent, and P-Vine – including a number of tracks never issued before. We could write for hours about how great this set is – but honestly, one look, or one listen, and you'll be hooked! LP, Vinyl record album

A special set that brings together all the mysterious singles that Khruangbin were dropping during the course of 2021 – mostly untitled singles in very limited releases, finally seeing the light of day here in a proper package! As you'd guess from the title, the core material is from the group's Mordechai album – but the approach here is very much in the farther reaches of the remix mode, so that the original music is often very abstracted – and taken to very new territory by talents who include Natasha Diggs, Ron Trent, Quantic, Soul Clap, Knxwledge, Felix Dickinson, and others. Titles include "Father Bird Mother Bird", "Dearest Alfred", "Connaissais De Face", "First Class (soul in the horn rmx)", "If There Is No Quesiton (Soul Clap's wild but not crazy mix)", "Pelota (cut a rug mix)", "Shida (Bella's suite)", "So We Won't Forget (Mang Dynasty version)", and "One To Remember (forget me nots dub)". ✨✧ John LennonPlastic Ono Band ... LP
Apple, 1970. Near Mint- ... $24.99
The first true proper solo album by John Lennon – recorded after a few non-Beatles records with Yoko Ono, and at the same time as Yoko's much wilder album with a similar title! This one, though, is John at his best – very personal and exposed, in similar territory to Paul McCartney on his first solo record – and the whole thing is a fantastic testament to the humanity that Lennon always brought to his music, even at a time when some might have accused him of going off the deep end with some of his more experimental music. The record's got a relatively stripped-down vibe, although isn't entirely just voice and guitar – as other elements are brought in at just the right level to expand the sound without losing the Lennon at the core. Titles include "Mother", "Hold On", "I Found Out", "Working Class Hero", "Isolation", "Remember", "Love", "Well Well Well", "Look At Me", "God", and "My Mummy's Dead". LP, Vinyl record album

Henry ManciniDays Of Wine & Roses (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Intrada, 1962. Used ... $28.99
One of the greatest Henry Mancini soundtracks of the 60s – and a record that showed the world that he could do a lot more than just crime jazz and groovy tunes! The title track is a well-known gem from the Mancini songbook – perfect for the bittersweet, melancholy of the film – and a great start for Mancini's music – which first shows some of the joy of the couple in the narrative, then moves into much bluer, deeper territory. There's an undercurrent of sadness that haunts even the more sprightly numbers – and some of the best instrumentation is handled by west coast jazzmen who include Pete Candoli and Don Fagerquist on trumpet, Harry Klee and Ted Nash on reeds, Bob Bain on guitar, and Larry Bunker on percussion. The music was never properly issued on record at the time – and this CD features very detailed notes, lots of images, and 27 tracks that include "Cocktail Hour", "No Guts", "A Sad Pop", "I Want To Go Home", "Man Meets Girl", and "Hi Fi". Metal Face, 1999. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $25.99 28.98 On February 4, 2022
The first full length from MF Doom – a record that set the standard for underground hip hop to come! On this modern classic, Doom caps off the 90s with more jazzy soul in the beats, and some semblance of straightforward rhyme mastery from both Doom & his guests – taken to the outer limits! What really pushes this one into legendary status are how well he works with creaky comic adventure samples – using them as the genesis of Doom's metal face supervillain persona. Looking back, the set is clearly the building blocks for deeper insanity to come – but the sense of structure may well make it his best album ever! Includes "Doomsday", "Rhymes Like Dimes" feat Cucumber Slice, "The Finest" feat Tommy Gun, "Go With The Flow", "Tick Tick", "Hey!", "The Mic", "Dead Bent", "?" feat Kurious and much more – including all of the classic skits (yeah, we said it, classic skits, creative sci fi sample genius that are creative as the proper tracks) – with 19 tracks in all. Kent/Dolemite, Early 70s. New Copy ... $5.99 12.98
Rudy Ray Moore cut some mighty raunchy records in his time – but this one may well the be the raunchiest, and maybe the funkiest too! The album's an instruction of "the proper way to make love to a lady" – but done in true Rudy Ray style, with very down-to-earth language that really takes off from the first few sentences – serving up an array of explicit descriptions and references to body parts that make the most hardcore hip hoppers seem like they're singing nursery rhymes! The music is wonderful, too – very funky congas and drums, pounding away behind the vocals, with some funky guitar touches too – all at a level that really makes the raw lyrics move. Parental Guidance is highly recommended – but that's also part of the pleasure of the record, too! CD

Mad funk from Ethiopia – classic work by the legendary Mulatu, one of Africa's heaviest artists of the 70s! Mulatu's been kind of a beathead secret for years – as most of his exotic grooves were never issued properly outside of Africa, and have only been the province of collectors who had the money and cash to get their hands on the work. The music's got a strange, other-worldly feel – a mix of bass-heavy dubby rhythms and spaced-out jazzy solos played on saxophone and electric piano – all coming together in a unique style that will blow your mind! The LP is the first-ever proper vinyl reissue of Mulatu's work – and collects together the best tracks from the recent Ethiopiques CD series, 9 titles that include "Yekatit", "Nesanet", "Sabye", "Ykermo Sew", "Asmarina", "Gubelye", "Dewel", and "Ene Alantchi Alnorem". New York Disco OrchestraReverie ... CD
Artemis/Espacial (Spain), 1978. New Copy ... $16.99
A completely obscure disco session from the New York scene of the 70s, and a great one too – long, well-crafted tracks that clearly draw inspiration from both the work of Salsoul Orchestra and MFSB – and which have a sound that's every bit as great as work from those two famous groups! Like the others, the approach here is mostly instrumental first, with vocals added in second – sometimes as chorus, sometimes as a lead – sung by an unnamed singer who's got a great range, and really soars with the mix – maybe a bit like Eddie Holman on some of the work that he did for Salsoul Records – and there's also a few occasional moogy moments that are pretty great too! The original album was only ever circulated as a promo, which makes this version long overdue as a proper release – with titles that include "Reverie", "It's True", "Get It Up & Dance", "Love In Motion", "Version", and "Untitled". Horace ParlanHappy Frame Of Mind ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1963. New Copy ... $13.99
Wicked work by pianist Horace Parlan – and one of his most stunning Blue Note sessions ever! The album was first recorded in 1963, but then kept on the shelf for years – seeing only brief release as part of a Booker Ervin package in the late 70s, and finally coming out with the proper cover and lineup at some point in the 80s! Why Blue Note waited so long is a mystery, because the album's a gem throughout – almost more important, and more starkly modern than any of Parlan's other work for the label. Booker Ervin leads the frontline on tenor, alongside Johnny Coles on trumpet, Grant Green on guitar, and the rhythm section of Butch Warren and Billy Higgins. Parlan's choice of material is fantastic – with a number of Africanist tracks that feature unique rhythmic patterns that really push the soloists! Titles include "A Tune For Richard", "Dexi", "Home Is Africa", "Kucheza Blues", and "Back From The Gig". CD

An essential brush for record cleaning – very easy to use, and a hell of a value at this price! This cool little baby contains a million lean carbon fibers – which pick up dust from the grooves of a record with ease – using natural static electricity to pull away the grit, and leave you with a much cleaner record in the end. The system doesn't use any fluid at all – just natural properties of attraction – and the brush comes in a holder that helps you clean the brush too! Record Care

Clara RockmoreTheremin (aka Art Of The Theremin) ... LP
Mississippi, Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 18.99
A groundbreaking album of theremin music – recorded at a time when many people had forgotten about the instrument a bit, but at a level that takes the electronic force to a whole new level! The theremin first rose to fame on 50s sci fi soundtracks and weird mood music records – and although it had gotten use on rock albums during the psychedelic years, it never got the proper treatment it deserved until this groundbreaking set from theremin wizard Clara Rockmore! Rockmore plays the instrument here alongside piano from Nadia Reisenberg – really stripping away sci fi futurist stereotype of the theremin, as she takes on work from serious composers, plus other sources too – using the instrument with a sense of drama, and the virtuosic control of a master instrumentalist – on titles that include "Vocalise", "Song Of Grusia", "The Swan", and "Chant Du Memestrel". An incredible document of the punk and post punk era live music scene in Chicago by Brian Shanley – a photographer and designer who shot so many iconic bands and did design work for Wax Trax Records early on – and this book of his black & whites is pretty breathtaking if you have even a passive interest in punk or Chicago live music history in general! It captures some of the earliest Chicago appearances by solo era Iggy Pop,The Ramones, Bauhaus, Pere Ubu, Patti Smith, Motorhead, The Dead Boys and so many more, pics from some of the legendary suburban Chicago gigs in Wheeling and Schaumburg by punk bands back in the day with gigs in the city proper were harder to get, shots of seminal Chicago bands like Skafish and Tutu & The Pirates around town, shots of X in their own LA stomping grounds, Television and others at their CBGBs home base – it's one amazing shot after another here. After a short foreword and intro the book is almost all photos, every one of them vital. Book

A really great Stones Throw debut from Twilite Tone – a Chicago beatmaker who's been one of our local heroes for years, and who finally gets the wider exposure he's deserved for way too long! Tone's done some big name work for Common, Kanye, and others – but here, he's very much at home inside his wonderful little shell – creating these endlessly creative sounds that really move past the obvious, and which showcase the kind of richer sonic palette we would have guessed from his record shopping habits over the years! There's a few 80s electro modes that come as a great surprise, mixed with harder core elements too – and there's occasional moments of sweetness, too – a emotional range that comes across nicely, on titles that include "N'Loveagain", "Tuff Love", "The Sound", "Do It Properly", "Taxi Cab Confessions", "The Lite", "Baby Steps", and "Ancestors & Angels". Mr Bongo (UK), 1970s. Used ... $6.99
Amazing! One of our favorite records of all time! We totally love the work of Marcos Valle – and we can honestly say that he's probably our favorite Brazilian artist ever. Valle had an incredible musical vision, and he was one of those rare Brazilian talents – like Edu Lobo or Egberto Gismonti – who would forever change the face of music with his unique concepts. This set includes some of Valle's best-ever work – much of it long out of print and never properly reissued before. The groove begins with bossa nova, moves into baroque pop, jazzy funk, and incredibly complex MPB. Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Think The Beatles only had an impact on rock and pop fans in the America of the 60s? Think again – because their music had an undeniable impact on soul as well – as you'll here from this wonderful range of remakes of classic cuts from the Fab Four! The work here is a real surprise if you don't know the legacy – but it also really makes sense once you're reminded of the mind-expanding, ear-opening territory the group hit in the latter half of the 60s – and working with themes of social change, alienation, and personal longing – of the sort that turn out to be perfect for new interpretations in soul! Most of these cuts are way more than standard cover versions, too – as the arrangements are really inventive, and take off in bold new directions that make the songs very much new properties overall. Most of the work here is from the late 60s and early 70s – and as always with Ace Records, the notes and presentation really put the music in context! Titles include "The Fool On The Hill" by The Four Tops, "Dear Prudence" by The Five Stairsteps, "For No One" by Maceo & The King's Men, "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" by Ike & Tina Turner, "Tomorrow Never Knows" by Junior Parker, "Got To Get You Into My Life" by Earth Wind & Fire, "Do You Want To Know A Secret" by Mary Wells, "Lovely Rita" by Fats Domino, "With A Little Help From My Friends" by The Undisputed Truth, "Savoy Truffle" by Ella Fitzgerald, and "Let It Be" by Bill Withers. There have been lots of Lowrider soul compilations on the market over the years – documenting the great of of mellow cuts on the LA scene of the 60s – particularly the kind that could move slow, but with a heavy groove at the bottom – perfect for chilling out in the back of a car on an endless summer night! Yet few have ever done the job as well as this collection – because in the hands of Ace/Kent Records, the music finally gets proper historical context – moved past the jargon of the East LA in crowd, and presented with great sound, and the kind of detailed notes that really get at the special qualities that made the west coast soul scene so different than the east in the 60s! The set list is superb – fantastic mellow soul tracks that are perfect, even if you don't care about this history – and titles include "It's Not That Easy" by Reuben Bell with The Casanovas, "I Really Love You" by The Ambassadors, "As I Sit Here" by The Whispers, "One More Chance" by The Four Tees, "Take A Step" by Aesop's Fables, "Why'd You Put Me On" by Bobbi Row & The Englishmen, "I Wanna Chance" by The Vows, "Second Hand Happiness" by Jimmy Conwell, "Be Kind To Love" by The Interpreters, "As Long As I've Got You" by The Charmels, "Don't Forget About Me Baby" by Jeff Dale, "I'm A Lonely Man" by Bobby Burn, "Crying All By Myself" by William Bell, "I'm Just Passing Time" by Melvin Hicks & The Versatiles, "When You're Poor" by The Lovers, "It's So Hard To Break A Habit" by The Webs, "Find Me" by The Attractions, "Never Gonna Let Him Know" by Debbie Taylor, and "Pretending Dear" by The Lovelles. Expansion (UK), Late 90s/2008. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The long-overdue release of Inside My Love – a sublime little set recorded by Trina Broussard in the late 90s – originally planned for the So-So Def label, but never properly issued at the time! The album's years ahead of most soul of the time – a great precursor to the Neo Soul explosion that major labels would finally get behind in the 21st Century, but which still left them scratching their heads back in the 90s – and failing to get music this great out to the market. Thankfully, Expansion have helped fix a decade-old mistake – and they're letting Trina's warmly soulful sound sparkle beautifully with this well-done reissue. Broussard's got a wonderfully classy approach to her music – one that's been appreciated in subsequent releases, but which comes through even more clearly here – a great sense of poise that's almost classic in a Phyllis Hyman sort of way. Titles include "Losing My Mind", "Why Do I Feel So Sad", "All I Need Is You", "All Night Long", "Not Around", "Remember Me", "Sailing", "Say You Really Love", and "Inside My Love". Deep Purple may be asking a lot to knock the faces of the presidents off Mount Rushmore, and put up their own images instead – but given the force of this classic early 70s set, they may well have the musical power on their own to carve up a whole mountainside! The album's a ripper right from the start – a tight barrage of fierce guitars and heavy drums from the legendary lineup that included Roger Glover, Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillian, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice – a group so tight, so tremendous, the only way to proper describe them is to encourage you to drop the needle on a classic gem like this! BBE (UK), 2007. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
It's been quite some time since we've heard a proper album from DJ Vadim, though he's been busy with a variety of projects in the intervening years since The Art Of Listening. He's wrapped himself around a new sound, but just as inventive as the creaky, atmospheric trip hop and left field hip hop that helped put him on the map in the first place. This outing finds Vadim mining a snapping contemporary hip hop vein, with nice bounce to the spare tracks, and his always inventive approach to the sampler and turntable firmly in place. Vocals run the gamut from crisp nusoul influenced singers, to rough ragga chatting, and of course, tight rhymes, courtesy a variety of co-conspirators, old and new, including Abstract Rude, Killa Kela, Skinny Man, Singa Blinga, Kathrin deBoer, Emo, Syrus, Sena, Diane, Deuce Eclipse, Monte Smith, Big Red and Lil Green. 17 tracks in all, including "Fear", "Talk to Me", "Them Say", "Soundcatchers", "Black IS The Night", "I Got To Rock", "Milwaukee", "Manchester", "Kill Kill Kill", "Watch That Sound", "Bath In Bleach" and "SD4". Collectables/Vee Jay, 1960. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
This is probably the first-ever decent reissue of a classic hardbop session that was cut in Chicago for Vee Jay, but which was never issued properly over the years! Chicago alto player Bunky Green leads a tight little sextet that has Donald Byrd on trumpet, Jimmy Heath on tenor, and Wynton Kelly on piano – and the group grooves with a tight sound that's in keeping with lots of the other great soul jazz/hardbop sessions that were coming out of Chicago at the time. Green's tone is nice and raw, quite a bit more so than on his later recordings for Cadet, and Heath is a perfect match for him on the frontline. Tracks include "Cecile", "Step High", "Counter Punch", and a swingin' version of "My Babe". CD

Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones recorded a number of sides for Prestige Records during the early 70s – but this rare gem came out after all those, in 1975, on the tiny Joka label, and never really got into proper circulation at the time – making it one of THE indie jazz funk classics of the 70s! The album's actually one of Boogaloo's best – and has a rougher edge than his Prestige albums – heard to great effect on the two standout funky cuts, "Sweetback" and "Confusion" – both of which are stunners that feature Jones really ripping away on the guitar! We never stop falling in love with the music of bassist Joelle Leandre – and although we've been listening to her records for many many years, we still always feel newly moved when we encounter music as great as this! The set features both a long live set of solo improvisations, recorded in a Church with a wonderfully echoey sound – and a few private after-set tracks too – both of which beautifully demonstrate that quality that always seems to set Leandre apart from the rest – a complete understanding of all the many properties of the acoustic bass, both bowed and plucked – delivered with a freewheeling sense of imagination, but also a quality that's very organic, almost sensual – so that her music has a tuneful quality at the core, even when quite free. The set features six selections from the concert, and two more after-set tracks too – both with a slightly different sonic quality, given the space. CD

Reprise, 1969. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really beautiful work from Joni Mitchell – a set that's got the stripped-down vibe you might expect from the image on the cover – a tremendous performance that features the young Joni at the height of her powers, working in front of a large crowd at Carnegie Hall, with only her vocals and guitar, and a bit of piano as well! Yet throughout the performance, Mitchell is mesmerizing – completely fantastic, and presenting her songs with a frank, honest quality that's maybe even more striking than the familiar studio recordings. Plus, with no other instrumentation at all, you realize just how great Joni's guitar work is – and how important it can be to the proper delivery of these tunes. There's a few nice spoken bits, and a few surprising titles too – and the set presents the full concert, which was recorded properly by Reprise Records in 1969, but never issued at the time. Titles include "I Had A King", "Blue Boy", "Circle Game/Little Green", "Marcie", "Nathan La Franeer", "Michael From Mountains", "Urge For Going", "The Gallery", "Chelsea Morning", "Hunter", "Both Sides Now", "That Song About The Midway", "The Fiddle & The Drum", and "Cactus Tree". RCA/4 Men With Beards, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Iggy's second solo LP proper, and a strange morass of junkie desperation and gutteral white punk funk – a conscious decision to move away from the guitar roar of the Stooges era and closer to the sounds his longtime champion David Bowie was experimenting with at the time, with a little bit of Lou Reed for good measure – but make no mistakes, this is Iggy's show. It's as fascinating as it is impressive on a more visceral level, heavy bass rhythms and keys intergral to the sound, and weary latenight storytelling that trips you out on contact. All tunes co-written by Bowie, who would go on to make a lot of money off "China Girl" a few years into the 80s when the world was more ready for it, plus the classic "Nightclubbing", "Sister Midnight", "Baby", "Dum, Dum Boys", "Tiny Girls" and "Mass Production". One of those records that kind of snuck under the radar at the time – but which has gone onto become a crucial part of soul music from the 90s, and a record that's one of the blueprints for the neo soul generation to come! Sweetback are a trio of musicians who provided important backing for Sade – the kind of warm, classic-styled soul grooves that made her a standout right from the start – and which also inspired a whole generation of musicians to leave behind some of the more electronic modes they were using in the 80s. The set really marks a shift back towards warmer, jazzier, more human sounds of soul music in the 90s – and in addition to great instrumentation by the core trio, the set also features some early vocals from Amel Larrieux, plus work from Maxwell too. ✨✧ Fred AndersonMilwaukee Tapes Vol 1 ... CD
Unheard Music Series/Atavistic, 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
For years, AACM tenorist Fred Anderson labored in obscurity – playing the better part of the 70s and 80s with little or no recognition of his strong inventive talent, and of his never-ending committment to expanding his horizons as a musician. Fortunately, Anderson's been greatly rediscovered in the past decade – and the past few years has seen the reissue and first-issue of material that was recorded during Anderson's "lost years", but never properly handled before. This session is one of those "first issue" sets – as it was recorded in Milwaukee in 1980, yet lay in the can for years, due to lack of interest. The set's fantastic – and features Anderson playing in a quartet with trumpeter Billy Brimfield, bassist Larry Hayrod, and drummer Hamid Drake. What's most notable about the material is that it has kind of a mellow spiritual quality to it – showing the more soulful sound of the AACM, one that didn't always make an appearance on Anderson's other recordings. The strongest case of this is the fantastic track "Bombay", which features tablas by Drake, and some wonderful extended soloing by Brimfield and Anderson. All tracks are great, though – and titles include "Black Woman", "Ballad For Rita", and "The Bull". CD

✨✧ Etta JamesQueen Of Soul (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Argo/Kent (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Queen of Soul is right! Heck, on these early albums, Etta practically invented soul – or at least invented a deep soul style of singing that would be taken up by countless other female singers during the 60s, but rarely matched with this kind of brilliance. Straight up beautiful stuff! The arrangements are uncredited, but we think they're probably by Riley Hampton – who did so much of Etta's other wonderful work in the early 60s. The recordings for sure took place at points between '62 and '64, mostly in Chicago, with couple in New York and one in Nashville. One other thing that is crystal clear about the sessions is that she had access to the very best musicians and the best sound possible – all you need is a listen to know that! The album's an all-solid, all-soul record with loads of obscure tunes and not a bit of filler! Titles include "Flight 101", "Bobby Is His Name", "Breaking Point", "Mello Fellow", "Do Right", and "Somewhere Out There". This first ever proper CD release is loaded with excellent bonus material – recordings from the same early-to-mid 60s period – 13 of them "You Got Me Where You Want Me", "Only Time Will Tell", "Pushover". "You Can't Talk To A Fool", "Would It Make Any Difference To You", "Pay Back", "Tomorrow Night", "I Can't Hold It Any More" and more. 23 tracks in all! CD

✨✧ Ivan Boogaloo Joe JonesSweetback ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A monster set of work by one of the funkiest guitar players ever! The whole set's nice, though – and other tracks include "You've Got It Bad Girl", "Trouble In Mind", and "Jamaica Farewell". CD

✨✧ Quin KirchnerShadows & The Light ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2020. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A double-length set that showcases the ever-growing, ever-evolving talents of drummer Quin Kirchner – working here in a variety of settings with help from some other great talents on the Chicago scene! Most of these tunes have a core sense of structure – and even when Quin is improvising more freely, he still finds a way to swing – working here on conventional drums, other percussion instruments, and even a bit of kalimba too – alongside a mix of players that includes Nick Broste on trombone, Nate Lepine on tenor and flute, Nick Mazzarella on alto, Jason Stein on bass clarinet, Greg Ward on alto, Rob Clearfield on piano, and Matt Ulery on bass. Many numbers have a spacious, ambitious vibe – almost spiritual jazz, of a quality that really has us respecting Kirchner more than ever – and the double space of the album is really needed to allow this majestic message the room to unfold properly. Titles include "Ecliptics", "King Korn", "Jupiter Moon", "Horizons", "At This Point In Time", "Bata Chop", "Pathways", "Star Cluster", and "Moon Vision". CD

✨✧ Eero KoivistoinenOriginal Sin (orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Scandia/Svart (Finland), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The rare fourth album from Finnish reed legend Eero Koivistoinen – his first on a proper jazz label, but still a pretty darn obscure set overall! Although only 25 at the time, Eero's already showing a real maturity in both his solo structures, and his overall conception of his music – sounds that have a sophistication that shows his strong musical education as a youth, but which also open up to all these freewheeling modes that mark Koivistoinen as a player at the forefront of changes taking place on the Finnish scene! There's a few fusion touches here and there – great electric piano from Eero Ojanen, and guitar from Lance Gunderson – but balanced nicely with the bold acoustic currents from Eero on tenor and soprano sax, and work from Tappi Luuppola on trumpet, Juhani Aalto on trombone, and Pekky Poyry on alto. The groove is a more jazz-based take on territory that would soon show up on the Love Records label, but graced throughout by Eero's wonderful phrasing – on titles that include "Bye Bye/Hello", "The Original Sin", "Both & And", "Summersea", and "Sinner". L'Arome/P-Vine (Japan), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Yekatit", "Nesanet", "Sabye", "Ykermo Sew", "Asmarina", "Gubelye", "Dewel", and "Ene Alantchi Alnorem". CD

✨✧ Lalo SchifrinMagnum Force – The Original Score ... CD
Aleph, 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Pure 70s genius from Lalo Schifrin – and the lost soundtrack to the second Dirty Harry film! Magnum Force never received a proper soundtrack album at the time – and although we've waited over 30 years, this overstuffed package finally gives the Schifrin score it's due – serving up a great variety of short tunes that fully illustrated the musical genius that made the Dirty Harry films so great. The set's got a total of 22 tracks in all – and goes way beyond the Dirty Harry Anthology sets to include some of the darker, moodier numbers from Magnum Force – some great shorter tunes that sit nicely next to the more famous funky themes! Titles include "Warm Enough", "Last Dance In Sausalito", "Early Is Late", "Briggs", "Magnum Force", "Stakeout", "Execution Squad", "The Bullet", "Potrero Hill", "The Faceless Assassin", "The Crooks", and "Harry's Ostinato". ✨✧ ScreamersScreamers Demo – Hollywood 1977 EP (with bonus download) ... LP
Superior Viaduct, 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Unreleased music from an LA band that might have been revolutionary, had they got the proper exposure – a group who were distinctly post-punk, right in the birth year of west coast punk – and one who've got a lineup that's a lot more electronic than their contemporaries! The group uses two keyboard players, both using simple, stark versions of the instrument – so that there's a quality that's almost cold wave, but also has the rough around the edges charm of Suicide – and maybe shares some of the bold sense of fidelity too! Lyrics are more punkish overall, and there's definitely a confrontational vibe to the group. Titles include "Magazine Love", "Punish Or Be Damned", "Anything", "Mater Dolores", and "Peer Pressure". Covers and music inspired by the towering figure in Afrofunk – the great Fela Kuti – rare 70s material a few modern cuts recorded in Nigeria, Trinidad, Ghana, Colombia, Germany and America – some previously unreleased, and all wonderful representations of the far-reaching influence of Fela! A few tunes are solid takes of the Nigerian funk groove proper – but others carry the sound into cumbia, steel band and western funk styles – all of it exciting, hugely passionate and floor-shaking! Titles include "Shacalao" by Cumbia Moderna De Soledad, "Woman Pin Down" by Dan Snatch And His Atomic 8 Dance Band, "Never Trust A Woman" by Bola Johnson, "Black Man's Cry" by Mosco Tiles Fonclaire Steel Orchestra, "Egbi/Black Man's Cry (Medley)" by Lever Brothers Gay Flamingos, "Comencemos" by Phirpo Y Sus Caribes, "Up Side Down" by Daktaris, "Lullaby For Lagos" by Whitefield Brothers and more. The stunning second album from Eulenspygel – a record that really has the German group taking off, both in terms of their instrumentation and their subject matter – which pushes their political view even more strongly than before! The set was recorded in the Apple Studios in the UK, and has a fierce, full-on quality that offers plenty of appeal to fans of the harder rock side of the prog spectrum, even if they can't entirely dig the lyrics – although for this set, the group also recorded an English version as well as a German version of the album – but the English one was only ever issued on 8-track tape back in the 70s! This CD issue finally presents the English version in a proper format – with titles that include "Mindshapers", "Trash", "Stranger", "Vicious Circle", "Battery Farm", and "Annoying".

✨✧ Indian SummerGiving Birth To Thunder ... LP
Numero, Early 90s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A quintessential snapshot of the rawer roots of the 90s emo scene! Oakland's Indian Summer only lasted about a year, and recorded a bunch of songs issued as 7 inches or on compilations, but never issued a proper LP in their short time as an active band. Most of their songs have fragile melodic buildups to cathartic roaring end – and a raw sound that really does feel a lot more earnestly real than the more polished followers who made it to the major labels and mainstream alternative rock radio later in the decade. Numero does the 90s underground rock scene a solid here! Includes "Angel", "MM", the relatively epic "Woolworm", "Reflections On Milkweed", "Sugar Pill", "I Think Your Train Is Leaving", "Touch The Wing Of An Angel Doesn't Mean You Can Fly", "Truman" and "Orchard". Pressure Sounds (UK), 1977. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic album of melodica grooves – right up there with the famous work of Augustus Pablo, and done in a very similar mode! The backings are deep and dubby – heavy on bass and riffing guitar, with a brooding energy that's really contrasted by the lighter, more melodic elements of the melodica that move in the frontline! The set was only ever issued as an advance release by producer Phil Pratt, but gets proper issue here – along with a number of bonus tracks from around the same time – which makes for a double-length collection of mighty nice instrumentals. Titles include "Terminal Rock", "Counter Punch", "Counter Dub", "What About The Half Version", "Fat Keys", "Dub Hill", "Behold I Come", "Raw Roots", "Money", "Dub In Fruits", and "Strange Mood". Metal Face, 1999. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
