Lakecia BenjaminPursuance – The Coltranes ... CD
Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
The music of the Coltranes – both John and Alice – taken into wonderful directions by saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin – a younger player who clearly feels the influence of the Great One in a very deep way, but isn't about to just offer up a straight copy of the family spiritual legacy! Part of the difference lies in the fact that Lakecia plays alto, not tenor or soprano – but there's also this energy here that's really fresh, too – maybe a more compact take on the ideas of the songs, but also strongly collaborative too – as the record features contributions from so many other great artists – Gary Bartz and Steve Wilson on alto, Meshell Ndegeocello and Reggie Workman on bass, Marc Cary on piano, Brandee Younger on harp, and Georgia Anne Muldrow and Dee Dee Bridgewater on vocals. The lineup changes nicely throughout the album, and there's many flavors of reflection in this Coltrane rainbow – on titles that include "Turiya & Ramakrishna", "Om Shanti", "Alabama", "Acknowledgement", "Liberia", "Central Park West", "Sprial", "Syeeda's Song Flute", and "Pursuance". Gorden CampbellConversations ... CD
Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A wonderful debut from Gorden Campbell – an underground soul singer on the contemporary LA scene, and one who works here with some of the same collaborative power as the jazz musicians in the city in recent years! Gorden claims inspiration from Terrace Martin, who's on the set, in a lineup that also includes Kamasi Washington – but apart from the bigger names, the whole thing is really an overall effort from everyone involved – great musicians who help shift the vibe with each track, but keep things unified over the strong vocals and message-minded music that Campbell lays down – tunes that include "Too Many Lost", "One Mind", "6 In The Mornin", "Play Somethin", "Initiate", "Song In 6", "Wherever", and "Purify Me". Chris McCarthy's the pianist in the group, and also the composer of all the tunes on the set – but the record gets some equally strong drive from the frontline work of Takuya Kuroda on trumpet and Michael Blake on tenor! Chris' tunes seem to fuse together Kuroda and Blake with this really bold energy at the start of every song – before the artists each take off on solos of their own, matched with McCarthy's energy on piano – which is often this very vibrant array of notes that come in streams and clusters! The rest of the group features the round, solid bass of Sam Minaie and the effortless romping drums of JK Kim – on titles that include "Shockingly Effective", "That's All You Get", "Ready Steady Here You Go", "Toasty", and "Happy Tired". Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
Great work from a really unique singer – a vocalist who's equally well-balanced between jazz and soul, and who uses that balance to great advantage throughout this well-crafted LP! Brenda's vocals and inflection definitely show a strong side of the understanding of the nuances you'd use in jazz – but she also works in tunes that are more soul-based, although still with a nice degree of complexity – instrumentation that changes from track to track, and which has way more going on than just beats and keyboards too. Tracks include "Marrow", "Catch Me Falling", "The Core", "Little Prayer", "Flying Lessons", "Return To Sender", and "Your Light". CD

Eddie PalmieriMi Luz Mayor ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 13.98
A hard-driving set from the great Eddie Palmieri – and a record that's maybe his strongest salsa effort in years, even though it's still filled with lots of the edgey, jazzy touches he's also brought to his best material in recent decades! The album's got a very strong lead vocal presence – both from Herman Olivera and Gilberto Santa Rosa, both of whom join Eddie's group and provide a strong focus for the ensemble's jazzy performances – with an especially strong sax section that includes work from Craig Handy, Ralph Moore, Gary Smulyan, and Ronnie Cuber! Carlos Santana serves up a few guitar parts on the record – and the group also features work from Jimmy Bosch and Conrad Herwig on trombones, and Brian Lynch and Jonathan Powell on trumpets – amidst plenty of percussion, and strong lead piano from Palmieri. Titles include "Mi Congo", "Chica Ni Lambo", "Abarriba Cumbiaremos", "Sun Sun Babae", "Yo Soy Mulato", "Tremendo Cumban", "Sonando Con Puerto Rico", and "El Resbaloso". CD

Christian Scott Atunde AdjuahChristian Scott Atunde Adjuah – Ancestral Recall ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 13.98
A really great showcase for the continuing evolution of Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah – a musician who's become so much more than just a straight jazz trumpet with a soulful vibe – as you'll hear on this really compelling set! The music is even more expansive than Christian's recent trilogy for Ropeadope – especially in the rhythms, which are both earthily percussive, and very forward-thinking – kicked up way past standard jazz rhythms, and driven by a heck of a lot of percussion as well – including some from Scott himself! The man also handles a variety of hip horns in addition to his trumpet – including a reverse flugelhorn, and another horn of his own creation – in a group that also features lots more percussion, a bit of piano, and guest vocalists who include Saul Williams, Mike Larry Draw, Chris Turner, and Devan Mayfield. The sound of the record is tough to describe in easy words – but if you loved the recent Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah, you'll find yourself maybe loving this one even more. Titles include "Songs She Never Heard", "Prophesy", "Forever Girl", "The Shared Stories Of Rivals", "I Own The Night", and "Ancestral Recall". CD

Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Seth Trachy is the saxophone leader of the group, but the set also features some guest Miguel Zenon on alto – and the two horns often do a great job of flowing and fluttering together – over nicely dynamic rhythms from Glenn Zaleski on piano, Pablo Menares on bass, and Felix Lecaros on drums! Yet even the core quartet material is great – as there's this bold, chunky energy to the album that pulsates out of the rhythm trio, then gives great encouragement to Trachy to make these long, blocky lines with his solo! The set features one vocal number, with lots of guests – the end track "ChiChi" – and other titles include "Water Bat", "JoJo Yelli", "Prantz", and "Expansion Contraction". CD

Gillian Margot's a jazz singer, and clearly has a fantastic ability to use her voice with the dexterity of an instrument – but she also brings in some nice currents of soul to this standout set, which is the kind of record that should really push Gillian over the top! The great Geoff Keezer's on board, handling all the piano and keyboards on the set – and Margot seems especially well-tuned to his energy, as the voice and keys flow together wonderfully, but in very different ways from track to track – maybe no surprise, given that the set mixes Gillian's own originals with cuts by Stevie Wonder, Wayne Shorter, and Joe Sample. Titles include "This Night", "Lighthouse", "Shadow Box", "Black Is The Color", "Power Flower", and "Now Is Where You Were". CD

A sweet keyboard set from Shaun Martin – a pianist who does a great job of mixing electric and acoustic elements here, driven on strongly by the acoustic bass of Matt Ramsey and powerful drums of Mike Mitchell! The set's funky at times, but never lets the rhythms completely dominate – as Martin's got this way of mixing his keyboard elements together with a richness that's completely great on its own – and which only sounds better once the bass and drums kick into gear and really set the tunes on fire! The set features an unusual take on "Afro Blue", which uses a heavy drum break – and an equally sweet take on "Naima", again with an unusual sense of rhythm – plus the originals "Riddle Me This", "The Light In Dark Place", and "Liberty Of The Rising Son". And as with that set, the keyboards are balanced by the sharp, raspy tones of Greg Tuohey on guitar – a player who almost gets key-like tones from his instrument at times, using it sparely, and with a nice sense of resonance that really helps shape the mellow grooves of the sound! The rest of the group features David Dinyard on bass and Tommy Crane on drums and percussion – and titles include "My Mistake", "Friendo", "Solace", "Here", "Is Anything Okay", "The Storyteller", "The Shadow & The Self", and "Where Now". ✨✧ Bobby PreviteCoalition Of The Willing ... CD
Ropeadope, 2006. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the hippest records we've heard in years from drummer Bobby Previte – a record that has him getting some great help from Charlie Hunter, Stanton Moore, and Skerik – yet which also still resonates with some the artier touches of his earlier years as well! Previte's directly here actually gets some great work out of the players involved – honing their sounds into moody tunes that paint a darkly political future of America in the 21st century – spelled out in titles that include "The Ministry Of Truth", "The Ministry Of Love", "Airstrip One", "Oceania", and "Memory Hole" – but carried out musically in tunes that are more straightforward and earthily appealing overall. The record's not as funky as you might expect from the players involved, but it's certainly straightforward and rhythmic – and nicely without the overindulgence of the jamband scene! CD

David Sanchez kicks off the album's liner notes with a great discussion on the African diaspora and its influence on music – one that's always been strongly felt in David's recordings, but which seems to come through even more strongly here! The record's definitely jazz, but borrows lots of rhythmic conceptions from around the globe – using a fair bit of percussion at the bottom of the sound, which is balanced nicely with strong, soulful tenor lines from Sanchez, waves of color on the guitar from Lage Lund, and a mix of piano and Fender Rhodes from Luis Perdomo! There's some especially great interplay between the angularity of the tenor and the warmer, rounder currents of the guitar – on titles that include "Madigra", "Wave Under Silk", "Mirage", "Fernando's Theme", "Canto", "Land Of The Hills", and "Iwa". A fantastic chapter in the continuing evolution of trumpeter Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah – a set recorded at the Blue Note in New York, just days before the city had to shut down in 2020 – and a record that maybe carries with it some of the urgency of that moment! Scott's studio records in recent years have really blown us away – but it's maybe even more amazing here to hear him working with the group in this frenzy of colors, tones, and rhythms! In addition to conventional trumpet, Christian blows a reverse flugelhorn, which has an amazing sound – and his group features really intense work on drums from Cory Fonville, whose efforts on the kit seem to set everyone else on fire – a lineup taht features Lawrence Fields on piano and Rhodes, Kris Funn on bass, Weedie Braimah on percussion, and Elena Pinderhughes on flute. Trombonist Clifton Anderson always makes us wait way too long between his albums as a leader – but each of his sets is definitely worth the anticipation, and seems to push Clifton's music forward a fair bit more than before! This album's a gem through and through – all original music, save one Bacharach tune – played with a core group that includes Stephen Scott on piano, Buster Williams on bass and either Ronnie Burrage or Al Foster on drums – but open to a shifting array of players who include Peter Bernstein on guitar, Antoine Roney on soprano and tenor, Rene McLean on tenor, and Victor See Yuen on percussion – players who open things up past Anderson's already-great phrasing on the trombone, which is especially striking on a few tunes that feature some less conventional instrumentation. Titles include "Nana D", "Mission Statement", "TUBC", "Sista Gemini", "Sonny Says", "Been Down This Road Before", and "Mysticancients". CD

Keyboardist Jason Miles has a long legacy in jazz – both as a sideman with bigger names, and as a leader on his own – but this set with his Kind Of New group may well be one of his best so far – a sweet batch of electric grooves that goes a long way towards updating older styles of keyboard funk! Miles has a wonderful way of letting the right sort of spaces fall between the notes – a vibe that takes us back to the best early work by Bobby Lyle or Rodney Franklin – and like both of those musicians, he knows that the best way into a groove is to take things easy, and let the music find itself – which it does wonderfully on the mixture of tunes included in the set. Really great work from the Royal Krunk Jazz Orchestra – an album that's much more ambitious and far-reaching than their previous album – with a sense of majesty we never would have expected the last time around! As before, there's no real "krunk" here at all – and instead, the group soar to the skies with a contemporary take on spiritual jazz inspirations – using the pyramids for inspiration in a way that hearkens back at the ancient/future spirit of Earth Wind & Fire – rediscovering a lost sense of legacy and spirit, then moving forward to reclaim a throne of greatness! Maybe that sounds a bit high-handed, but the music is anything but – and instead weaves together trumpets, trombones, and saxes with effortless ease and a real sense of organic energy – flowing with keyboards and percussion that keep things grounded on the planet, while Dionne Farris provides some occasional vocals. Titles include "The Regyptian Blues", "Kabla Khufu", "The Question Of Time", "Black Indian Rain Dance", "Olmec", and "Voyage Of The Pyramid Builders". CD

A brilliant record and a big step for Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah, at a point when he truly was stretching out creatively in a big way – seamlessly mixing classic electric jazz influences & modern electronic touches! Scott is on trumpet, his custom sirenette & reverse fluegelhorn, mixing earth-bound sounds and spacey atmosphere throughout – and the band includes Braxton Cook on alto, Lawrence Fields on piano and Rhodes, Corey King on trombone, and Corey Fonville and Joe Dyson Jr on a pretty impressive mix of drums and sampler atmosphere. It starts off strong with "Sunrise In Beijing", an impressive showcase for flautist Elena Pinderhughes, who really helps this one take flight over the spacey & stuttering percussion. Other tracks include "Twin", "Perspectives", "West Of The West", "Liberation Over Gangsterism", "Of A New Cool", "Tantric", "The Last Chieftain" and more. CD

Tight guitar from Chance Hayden – a player who definitely knows how to get a lot of color and tone out of his instrument, even while picking out a sharp note solo! There's a dexterity in Hayden's style that's clearly inspired by the more proficient blues guitarists in recent generations – but the overall sound here is much more jazz funk, with a core quartet that features keyboards, bass, and drums – all in a nicely lean sound that allows Chance to shine in the spotlight at a level that's a bit like Eddie Roberts (of New Mastersounds fame) on some of his solo sets. Jarrod Lawson provides guest vocals on a great version of the Donny Hathaway tune "Someday We'll All Be Free" – and other tracks include "Hung Up On My Baby", "Get Somethin", "Matrix", "Take The Call", "Kissing My Love", "Many Disguises", and "You Mother You". A jazz trio with a very unique sound – one that appears to be rooted in Brazilian music, according to some of the notes in the CD – but which, to our ears, sounds a bit more contemporary and individual to the group! The rhythms are very dynamic – a nice change from more familiar use of piano, bass, and drums – and although some tracks feature added Brazilian percussion, things change up nicely even when that instrumentation is not in the mix – as the three core musicians really have a way of leaping forward strongly with a cohesive pulse – but still with enough space that allows keyboardist David Ryshpan spin out some great solos on his own. The mode is a bit like some of the more creative jazz-inspired projects coming from the LA scene of late – such as work on the Ropeadope label – and there's definitely some righteous power to the vocals on the set, thanks to contributions from Mike Ladd, Gael Faye, and Guillermo E Brown.
