Bluke (Luke Vibert & BlueRum13)Sense The Urgency ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
An unusual set of work from the ever-changing Luke Vibert – a collaboration with MC BlueRum13 – whose lyrics provide a great mix with Luke's beats and instrumentation on the album! All those crisp, creative elements that we love from older Vibert records are still very much in the mix – but the focus here is also different, and very fresh – and an equally great way to present the lyrics of BlueRum13 too. The set features a few guest appearances – from DJ SPS, Recyte, Ray Colom, Oz, and FACTS – and the set is divided up into sections devoted to four of the five senses – See, Touch, Hear, and Taste. Tracks include "Golden", "Wait A Minute", "Something Fresh", "Turninitup", "Slide By", "Mother Cuffint Chains", "Matter", "Yesh", "Let's Go", "Machine Gums", "Omnipotent", "Happy Daze", "Flying Mortalmovas", and "Gimme A Sign". Robi BotosOld Soul ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. Used ... $3.99
Robi Botos is a keyboardist with a nice sense of space – one that makes for an inherent sense of groove in his music, even when things are mellow! Robi's not exactly a funk musician, but the record has plenty of currents of that mode – as his own keyboards are blended strongly with the snapping drums of Larnell Lewis and well-timed bass of Mike Downes – then topped off with some mighty nice work on tenor by Seamus Blake! We're not used to hearing Blake in such a setting, which really brings out some of his more soulful elements – and the tenor is a great sharp-edged contrast to some of Botos' warmer lines on piano and keyboards. The set also features guest work from Lionel Loueke's guitar on one track – and titles include "Calhoun Square", "Budapest", "Old Soul", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Praise", "Hope", and "Diamond". CD

Mark De Clive-LoweHeritage II ... CD
Mashibeats/Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 13.98
A beautiful second volume in the Heritage series from keyboard genius Mark De Clive Lowe – and one that we like even more than the first! The music here has the strong spiritual currents of the previous set, but also brings in more of the cosmic, electronic modes that we knew in Mark's initial music – a great blend of jazz with inventive rhythms, wide-ranging keyboard sounds, and even some live electronics – recorded in concert, but with the complexity of a more dynamic studio production! Other players include Teodross Avery on tenor, Josh Johnson on alto, Carlos Nino on percussion, Brando Eugene Owens on bass, and Brandon Combs on drums – and titles include "Isan", "Ryugu Jo", "Bushido II", "Mizugaki", "Mirai No Rekishi", and "O Edo Nihonbashi". Ego MondoEnd Of A Daze ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
A tight blend of hip hop, funk, and soul – served up with a lot of dark currents around the edges, and in a criss-crossing style that reminds us of some of the hipper experiments of this type from the New York downtown scene in years back! There's distortion at the edge, and lots of moody elements in the middle – and the vocals are a mix of sung and spoken, often with a sense of intensity that recalls the urgency of late 80s/early 90s hip hop – but delivered with maybe more of a 21st Century funk sensibility. Titles include "Bloody Leaves", "Same Ole Kings", "Be A Star", "Stranger", "Rad Jams", and "Justice". CD

Lulu FallBetween Two Worlds ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
Lulu Fall has a vocal style that's both urgent and effortlessly flowing – modes that are both underscored nicely by the jazzy instrumentation on the set – music by a core combo that really fits the spirit of the singer's energy, and does a great job of shifting to match her spirit throughout! The tunes often have a way of starting in one direction, then moving in another – and Lulu's clearly out to leave her own mark in contemporary soul, but all without ever pushing things too much or leaning into any simple stylistic gimmicks. Instead, the record's got a vibe that's very individual, and maybe a bit hard to describe – but well worth checking out. Titles include "Now", "She", "Runaway", "Where Are We Going", "Between Two Worlds", "Keep Your Head Up", and "Powerful". CD

Great sounds from Ghost Note – a group that's co-led by a drummer and a keyboardist who also plays more drums – which should give you an idea of the funky nature of the album! There's a fuller group on hand for most of the record – guitar, tenor, alto, flute, and more keyboards – but most numbers seem to start from the rhythms first, then layer on the instrumental elements – avoiding vocals for the most part, although there's some snippets of found spoken bits used throughout the set – mostly as commentary! Kamasi Washington guests on the tune "No More Silence", Karl Denson guests on "Weedie B Good", and other titles include "Swagism", "Dry Rub", "Bawllz", "What's Next", "Funk You Muthafunka", "The Lone Angel", "Trifelife", and "Milkshake". Chance HaydenGet Somethin' ... CD
Ropeadope/Atlanta, 2018. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Tight guitar from Chance Hayden – a player who definitely knows how to get a lot of color and tone out of his instrument, even while picking out a sharp note solo! There's a dexterity in Hayden's style that's clearly inspired by the more proficient blues guitarists in recent generations – but the overall sound here is much more jazz funk, with a core quartet that features keyboards, bass, and drums – all in a nicely lean sound that allows Chance to shine in the spotlight at a level that's a bit like Eddie Roberts (of New Mastersounds fame) on some of his solo sets. Jarrod Lawson provides guest vocals on a great version of the Donny Hathaway tune "Someday We'll All Be Free" – and other tracks include "Hung Up On My Baby", "Get Somethin", "Matrix", "Take The Call", "Kissing My Love", "Many Disguises", and "You Mother You". Greg Hester & FriendsSoul Brother Where Art Thou – A Tribute To James Brown ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Singer Greg Hester pays tribute to the late Godfather – and does so in a nice way that moves things past the usual! There's definitely plenty of funk in the music – and the band also includes some of James' old bandmates too – but Greg's got a nice blue-eyed soul approach, maybe a bit like Van Morrison at times – which makes for a record that's very much his own, rather than a slavish copycat of the legend. Fred Wesley plays plenty of strong trombone leads on the record – and the set also features guest appearances from Ivan Neville, Shana Morrison, Col Bruce Hampton, Caroline Aiken, Jimmy Hall, and others. Titles include "Try Me", "Think", "There Was A Time", "Open The Door", "Lickin Stick", "Soul Power", and "Get Up Offa That Thing". CD

Casimir LiberskiCosmic Liberty ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A very cool little record, and one that maybe shows the better directions that fusion has taken in the 21st Century – still as electric and vibrant as before, but really exploding with new ideas and an especially strong ear for the rhythmic side of the music! By that, we don't mean that the record is funky – but maybe more chunky and cosmic – driving forward with these great blocky keyboard lines from Casimir Liberski, which seem to be heavy on Rhodes – then pushed forward even more with electric bass from Louis De Mieulle and drums from Matt Garstka! This is cosmic electric jazz that's clearly aware of all that came before, but which also soars forward with great energy of its own – the kind of record we hope to be hearing more from Casimir in the future, with titles that include "Strident Laser Shard", "White Lighter", "Violent Absinthe", "Stasis", "Azuwi", and "Cosmic Liberty". Ropeadope, 2018. Used ... $2.99
A fantastic mix of deep soul and funky jazz – but served up with a vibe that's completely contemporary, and which definitely gives these guys a sound that's all their own, right from the start! Iona Vintu is the singer, and she's got this tremendous voice – richly expressive, but never overdone – and very much her own woman, as she weaves her way through the sharp work on alto, tenor, and saxophone by Andrew Gould – who co-wrote all the songs with Vintu, in a lineup that also includes drums, bass, and guitar – used in nicely lean, chunky ways, so that the sax lines and vocals really carry most of the non-rhythmic energy of the tunes. Great stuff throughout – in the best of the Ropeadope tradition – with cuts that include "Sister", "Rise", "On A Darker Moon", "Nearness", "Fly", "Follow", "It's Alright", and "Ring My Bell". CD

Eddie PalmieriFull Circle ... CD
Ropeadope/Uprising, 2018. New Copy ... $11.99 15.98
Fantastic work from Eddie Palmieri – sounding here as if he hasn't changed a thing since the 70s! With most artists, that would be a critique – but given that during the 70s, Eddie was constantly ablaze with creative activity, and always pushing his boundaries – we mean that statement as a compliment in the best possible way – because all these many years later, Palmieri is still setting the standard for everything that can be done in Latin jazz, and reminding us that few folks can ever reach the heights to which he's taken us over the years! Eddie's been sneaking a few killer albums on the market over the past decade or so, and this is the latest in that run – completely away from any more commercial inclinations, and done in a burning descarga mode that allows Eddie's piano to really open up in a killer jazz lineup that includes Jimmy Bosch and Conrad Herwig on trombones, Jonathan Powell on trumpet, Louis Fouche on trumpet, Luques Curtis on bass, and Camilo Molina on timbales! Herman Olivera sings lead vocals, but the tracks are long and feature lots of jazzy solos – on titles that include "Paolo Pa Rumba", "Oyelo Que Te Conviene", "Linda Yambu", "Azucar", "Vamanos Pa'L Monte", and "Muneca". The genius of Eddie Palmieri never seems to dim at all as the years go on – and, if anything, the genius only seems to flower even more – finding new ways of expression that maybe even blow away some of Eddie's classic work from the 60s and 70s! This set is amazing – a fantastically modern refiguring of Latin roots – with elements that stretch back to Palmieri's earliest charanga years and his Latin jazz rebirth, but used in ways that are very different – and very striking throughout! The lineup remains relatively small on most numbers – with very heavy focus on piano, percussion, and bass – but Eddie also makes great use of key guests who include Alfredo De La Fe on violin, Donald Harrison on alto, Ronnie Cuber on baritone, and Joe Locke on vibes. Titles include "Locked In", "Cuervas Y Tumbao", "Wise Bata Blues", "La Cancha", "Augustine Parish", "Life", "Samba Do Suenho", and "Jibarita Y Su Son". LP, Vinyl record album

RC & The Gritz just keep getting better and better with each new record – to the point where they've found a way to fully state their own sound, yet work with a sort of generosity that opens up the door for plenty of great collaborations! That's definitely the case here – as the group has fantastic guest vocals from a lineup that includes Carmen Rodgers, N'Dambi, Devin The Dude, Cure For Paranoia, Mumufresh, Amber Bullock, and Teedra Moses – although honestly, we'd dip our ears in any album just for the seductive keyboards of RC Williams alone! Williams has a great way of working out these bold, bottomy lines over the snapping drums of the combo – very funky, but never forced, and with a very organic groove. Titles include "Hot Pearl C", "3AM", "Fallin In Love", "My Conscience", "White Gloves", "Thickness", "Agitation", and "Lavender Lemonade (rmx)". CD

A nice little record from Jon Regen – a singer who works in a space that's somewhere in between jazz and more familiar singer/songwriter modes – in a legacy that might begin with Ben Sidran in the 70s, and come up to present work by an artist like Jamie Cullum! Regen's got a nicely warm sound in his approach – but not one that's too smooth or commercial – as most of these songs are very understated, and done with a mix of lead piano instrumentation and other touches around the edges – sometimes maybe a bit of stepped-up rhythm, but never in a way that challenges the vocals. Titles include "Hole In My Heart", "Every Night", "Goodnight New York", "New Sensation", "Who Cares If Everybody Else Knows", "Jupiter Calling", and "Higher Ground". CD

Melaza/Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $23.99
David Sanchez kicks off the album's liner notes with a great discussion on the African diaspora and its influence on music – one that's always been strongly felt in David's recordings, but which seems to come through even more strongly here! The record's definitely jazz, but borrows lots of rhythmic conceptions from around the globe – using a fair bit of percussion at the bottom of the sound, which is balanced nicely with strong, soulful tenor lines from Sanchez, waves of color on the guitar from Lage Lund, and a mix of piano and Fender Rhodes from Luis Perdomo! There's some especially great interplay between the angularity of the tenor and the warmer, rounder currents of the guitar – on titles that include "Madigra", "Wave Under Silk", "Mirage", "Fernando's Theme", "Canto", "Land Of The Hills", and "Iwa". We loved the Phoenix album by keyboardist Javier Santiago – and although this set bills itself as if it's a relation to that record, it's more of a completely different effort – but one that's equally fantastic as well! Santiago is a tremendous up-and-coming talent – a hell of a pianist, and also great on Fender Rhodes – working in that sense of rhythm that's been unlocked in the 21st Century by a few key figures in jazz – and which a new generation of players like Javier is taking in some wonderful directions of their own! The core group features really inventive rhythms from Corey Fanville on drums and Zach Brown on bass – and the work features an guest performances on a few tracks each from Dayna Stephens on tenor and soprano, Nir Felder on guitar, and Ben Flacks on soprano and tenor. Titles include "Change Is The Only Constant", "For Unity", "Cedar Avenue", "A Second Chance", "Aries' Peace", "A Day In The Life Of A Tree", "Beautiful Love", and "King Klave's Return". CD

One of the most compelling mixes of steel pans and jazz we've ever heard – played by a group led by percussionist Jonathan Scales, and featuring a number of other differently-tuned steel drums in the mix! The instrumentation just features bass and drums alongside all the pans – which leaves the sound to come almost exclusively from the combined colors and tones of the mighty steel lineup – all used in a way that's much more complex and fluid than some of the simpler projects of this nature, which usually just try to add a bit of swing to a core Caribbean approach. The album is billed as a "concerto" – and titles include "The Man", "The Mouse", "The Mud", "The Mean", "The Maze", and "The Mad". CD

Dred ScottRides Alone ... CD
Ropeadope, 2018. New Copy ... $5.99 14.99
Dred Scott definitely rides alone here – handling all the instrumentation on the record himself, including piano, bass, drums, and percussion – but he does so in a way that really makes you feel as if you're listening to a cohesive group! Through the magic of overdub, Scott spins out these warmly melodic lines that pulsate with plenty of rhythm – in a mode that almost reminds us of the best French trio tradition from a few decades back, but which is completely Dred's own magic. The album feels far from gimmicky – and, if anything, we might think that Scott should have created some fake names for other players, just to help the album stand equally with other piano trio records – which it definitely does from a musical perspective. Titles include "Coal Creek Road", "Gateway", "Consolations", "Flying Bighorn", "Goodbye America", and "Wild Turkeys". CD

A trio of tenorists from the Brooklyn scene – Michael Eaton, Sean Sonderegger, and James Brandon – working here with just the bass of Brad Jones and drums of G Calvin Weston for support! The mix of three horns, bass, and drums is totally great – as the players leap along between rhythm, melody, and individual expressions – in a way that's sometimes got a reed-like take on brass band modes, but which more frequently recalls some of the sax quartet experiments of the 80s, but with more rhythm at the core – maybe no surprise, since the notes have a dedication to Bern Nix, and a quote on harmelodics from Ronald Shannon Jackson! A jazz trio with a very unique sound – one that appears to be rooted in Brazilian music, according to some of the notes in the CD – but which, to our ears, sounds a bit more contemporary and individual to the group! The rhythms are very dynamic – a nice change from more familiar use of piano, bass, and drums – and although some tracks feature added Brazilian percussion, things change up nicely even when that instrumentation is not in the mix – as the three core musicians really have a way of leaping forward strongly with a cohesive pulse – but still with enough space that allows keyboardist David Ryshpan spin out some great solos on his own. Ryshpan also plays Fender Rhodes on four of the album's tracks, and accordion on one more – and titles include "Ancestral", "Pilgrimage Suite", "A Bandeira Do Bruxo", "Moa Vive (parts 1 & 2)", and "Electric Variation". A jaw-dropper from Terrace Martin – the kind of record that sneaks on the market under everyone's ears, but will no doubt be one of those sets we'll all go back to again and again over the years! Martin's got a beautifully fresh take on funky jazz – steeped somewhat in the classic inspiration of the 70s era, but with a distinctly 21st Century execution – with crispy edges, cosmic currents, and a chunky approach to rhythm that makes the whole thing come across with a really subtle sort of power! The album's overflowing with guests – including Robert Glasper, Thundercat, Kamasai Washington, Keyon Harrold, and Laylah Hathaway – but there's also a core energy that's all Terrace's own, with lots of snakey keyboards that weave these magical tonal patterns in a wonderful way. Brilliant, and completely captivating – with tracks that include "Push", "Curly Martin", "Never Enough", "Turkey Taco", "Tribe Called West", "Think Of You", "Bromalia", and "Valdez Off Crenshaw" – a nice remake of the Donny Hathaway classic "Valdez In The Country". Miles has a wonderful way of letting the right sort of spaces fall between the notes – a vibe that takes us back to the best early work by Bobby Lyle or Rodney Franklin – and like both of those musicians, he knows that the best way into a groove is to take things easy, and let the music find itself – which it does wonderfully on the mixture of tunes included in the set. A hard-driving set from the great Eddie Palmieri – and a record that's maybe his strongest salsa effort in years, even though it's still filled with lots of the edgey, jazzy touches he's also brought to his best material in recent decades! The album's got a very strong lead vocal presence – both from Herman Olivera and Gilberto Santa Rosa, both of whom join Eddie's group and provide a strong focus for the ensemble's jazzy performances – with an especially strong sax section that includes work from Craig Handy, Ralph Moore, Gary Smulyan, and Ronnie Cuber! Carlos Santana serves up a few guitar parts on the record – and the group also features work from Jimmy Bosch and Conrad Herwig on trombones, and Brian Lynch and Jonathan Powell on trumpets – amidst plenty of percussion, and strong lead piano from Palmieri. Titles include "Mi Congo", "Chica Ni Lambo", "Abarriba Cumbiaremos", "Sun Sun Babae", "Yo Soy Mulato", "Tremendo Cumban", "Sonando Con Puerto Rico", and "El Resbaloso". CD

✨✧ Royal Krunk OrchestraPyramids – Opus 4 No 2 ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really great work from the Royal Krunk Jazz Orchestra – an album that's much more ambitious and far-reaching than their previous album – with a sense of majesty we never would have expected the last time around! As before, there's no real "krunk" here at all – and instead, the group soar to the skies with a contemporary take on spiritual jazz inspirations – using the pyramids for inspiration in a way that hearkens back at the ancient/future spirit of Earth Wind & Fire – rediscovering a lost sense of legacy and spirit, then moving forward to reclaim a throne of greatness! Maybe that sounds a bit high-handed, but the music is anything but – and instead weaves together trumpets, trombones, and saxes with effortless ease and a real sense of organic energy – flowing with keyboards and percussion that keep things grounded on the planet, while Dionne Farris provides some occasional vocals. Titles include "The Regyptian Blues", "Kabla Khufu", "The Question Of Time", "Black Indian Rain Dance", "Olmec", and "Voyage Of The Pyramid Builders". CD

Melaza/Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really great showcase for the continuing evolution of Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah – a musician who's become so much more than just a straight jazz trumpet with a soulful vibe – as you'll hear on this really compelling set! The music is even more expansive than Christian's recent trilogy for Ropeadope – especially in the rhythms, which are both earthily percussive, and very forward-thinking – kicked up way past standard jazz rhythms, and driven by a heck of a lot of percussion as well – including some from Scott himself! The man also handles a variety of hip horns in addition to his trumpet – including a reverse flugelhorn, and another horn of his own creation – in a group that also features lots more percussion, a bit of piano, and guest vocalists who include Saul Williams, Mike Larry Draw, Chris Turner, and Devan Mayfield. The sound of the record is tough to describe in easy words – but if you loved the recent Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah, you'll find yourself maybe loving this one even more. Titles include "Songs She Never Heard", "Prophesy", "Forever Girl", "The Shared Stories Of Rivals", "I Own The Night", and "Ancestral Recall". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Michael BlakeRed Hook Soul ... CD
Ropeadope, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A funky little record from reedman Michael Blake – dedicated to the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, and served up with just the right sort of gritty style to match! Blake plays mostly tenor on the set, in a combo that has some electric touches on guitar, bass, and keyboards – balanced out with some strong work on drums and percussion at the bottom – all with a groove that echoes some of the best jazz funk styles of the early 70s, but with a leaner, more updated vibe overall! There's a few points where we'd almost swear that Blake was playing a Varitone sax – ala Eddie Harris – and titles include a great remake of "Volunteered Slavery", plus "Red Hook Soul", "The Nitty Gritty", "King Curtis", "Did You Call Her Today", "Everybody Needs Love", and "Video Games". Mashibeats/Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We've loved the music of Mark De Clive-Lowe for many years – and he's really rewarded us with a continuing evolution of his sound and style – to a point where a record like this is nothing that we might have expected over a decade ago! The set's a live jazz performance, but still graced with some of the more cosmic touches from Mark's electronic years – and the keyboardist plays both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes – amidst a group that also includes the great Carlos Nino on percussion, Josh Johnson on alto and flute, Brandon Eugene Owens on bass, and Brandon Combs on drums – a very soulful combo who are more than willing to follow the leader on his spiritual musical journey! And the set's definitely got a spiritual vibe – tracks that spin out with inspiration from De Clive-Lowe's earlier life in Japan – but given a more contemporary, soulful style – really glowing in a way that resonates with the image on the cover. The set also features guest work from Teodross Avery on tenor on two tracks – and titles include "Bushido 1", "Memories Of Nanzenji", "Asa No Yume", "Niten Ichi", "Akatombo", and "Mizugaki". Beautifully bright-toned tenor and soprano sax from Duncan Eagles – given even more of a sense of color by the great use of the guitar of David Preston in the group – a player who often rings out alongside the leader, and really sets things off in a great way! The group's also got leaping, soaring rhythms from Max Luthert on bass and Dave Hamblett on drums – and pianist Matt Robinson does a great job of coming down the middle to deepen the sound and further expand the palette. All tracks are originals by Eagles, recorded in the UK – and titles include "Riad", "Conquistador", "Shimmer", "Taxco", "Cascade", "Midnight Mass", and "Citizen". CD

These are definitely toxic times, and we're happy we've still got the Last Poets on hand to transcend them – especially as the group here sounds maybe better than we've heard them in a long, long time! There's as much music as there is poetry to the record – some of the songforms they explored on their mid 70s work – served up by the core trio of Umar Bin Hussan, Baioun Oyewole, and Baba Donn Babatunde – with a very cool combo that's driven by some excellent basslines from Jamaaladeen Tacuma, who again seems to have found his best setting in quite some time. The record features a few guest poetic contributions – from Ursula Rucker, Malik B, and Wadud Ahmad – and the whole thing is a double-length set that's overflowing with the kind of knowledge we've always expected from the group – with titles that include "For The Millions", "Black Rage", "Soul Reflection", "Heartbeat", "If We Only Knew", "Juju Jimi", "Rain Of Terror", and "Toxic Times". CD

EP/Ropeadope, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Locked On", "Cuervas Y Tumbao", "Wise Bata Blues", "La Cancha", "Augustine Parish", "Life", "Samba Do Sueno", and "Jibarita Y Su Son". CD

Soaring keyboards from this up-and-coming player – an artist who's especially fantastic on Fender Rhodes, which get plenty of space on this excellent album! Javier Phoenix is a jazz musician at the core – yet he's also part of a younger generation we might dub the post-Robert Glasper scene – who are easily open to other ideas, cosmic visions, and just the right currents of soul – while all keeping things strongly in a jazz-based perspective! The rhythms are wonderfully blocky, and sometimes complicated – and in addition to a core tight group, the set also features guest work from Dayna Stephens on tenor and EWI, Nicholas Payton on trumpet, and Ben Flocks on tenor and soprano. Santiago himself plays piano, Fender Rhodes, and other keyboards – plus a touch of trumpet, and even a small dose of vocals. Titles include "River Song", "Abyss Light", "Alive", "Autumn", "Phoenix", "Gaia's Waiting", and "Tomorrow". CD

Trumpeter David Weiss never fails to give us amazing music, no matter what the setting – and here, he's working with his Point Of Departure group – an ultra-hip lineup that features Myron Waldon and JD Allen on tenor sax, each taking on different parts of the record – plus guitar, bass, and drums – as well as a bit of extra Fender Rhodes from Weiss himself! As with some of David's other projects, the music is a look back at the future of modern jazz in the late 60s and early 70s – with a spotlight on amazing compositions by artists like Wayne Shorter, Kenny Cox, Joe Henderson, Tony Williams, Charles Moore, and John McLaughlin – music that was years ahead of its time when written, and which gets even more forward-thinking treatment here by the group. Rhythms are tentative and angular at some points – really allowing for shades of color between the trumpet and tenor – and other points are bolder, and unlock some deeper righteous power in the compositions. Titles include "Sanctuary", "Noh Word", "Two Faced", "Pee Wee", "Gazelle", "The Mystic Knights Of The Sea", and "Sojourn". CD

Aaron Parks is a master of tones here – not just the ones from his own piano and keyboards, which can come spiraling out with effortless ease – but also the sound of the quartet's guitar from Greg Tuohey, which often has its own way of shading things in! The album may well be the most dynamic we've ever heard from Parks – a set that's as focused on his own skills on the keys as it is the overall sound of the music – yet at a level that never has the latter sacrificing the former, that is – having the concept get in the way of the execution. The rest of the group features David Ginyard on bass and Tommy Crane on drums – and titles include "The Trickster", "Professor Strangeweather", "Kid", "Small Planet", "The Fool", "Good Morning", "Rising Mind", "Hearth", and "Mandala". Thiefs are a jazz combo at the core – outfitted with saxes, acoustic bass, and drums – but all three members also use a fair bit of electronics, and do so in a way that opens the door to a range of different voices that help shape the sound of the record! The mode is a bit like some of the more creative jazz-inspired projects coming from the LA scene of late – such as work on the Ropeadope label – and there's definitely some righteous power to the vocals on the set, thanks to contributions from Mike Ladd, Gael Faye, and Guillermo E Brown. Aaron Parks plays piano and keyboard on most of the set – and there's a vibe here that's a bit like his own work too – on titles that include "I Live In Fear", "Anthro", "Pas D'Ici", "Iwbah", "Beat One", and "Anthro".
