Bluke (Luke Vibert & BlueRum13)Sense The Urgency ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $1.99 13.99
An unusual set of work from the ever-changing Luke Vibert – a collaboration with MC BlueRum13 – whose lyrics provide a great mix with Luke's beats and instrumentation on the album! All those crisp, creative elements that we love from older Vibert records are still very much in the mix – but the focus here is also different, and very fresh – and an equally great way to present the lyrics of BlueRum13 too. The set features a few guest appearances – from DJ SPS, Recyte, Ray Colom, Oz, and FACTS – and the set is divided up into sections devoted to four of the five senses – See, Touch, Hear, and Taste. Tracks include "Golden", "Wait A Minute", "Something Fresh", "Turninitup", "Slide By", "Mother Cuffint Chains", "Matter", "Yesh", "Let's Go", "Machine Gums", "Omnipotent", "Happy Daze", "Flying Mortalmovas", and "Gimme A Sign". Robi BotosOld Soul ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $3.99 14.99
Robi Botos is a keyboardist with a nice sense of space – one that makes for an inherent sense of groove in his music, even when things are mellow! Robi's not exactly a funk musician, but the record has plenty of currents of that mode – as his own keyboards are blended strongly with the snapping drums of Larnell Lewis and well-timed bass of Mike Downes – then topped off with some mighty nice work on tenor by Seamus Blake! We're not used to hearing Blake in such a setting, which really brings out some of his more soulful elements – and the tenor is a great sharp-edged contrast to some of Botos' warmer lines on piano and keyboards. The set also features guest work from Lionel Loueke's guitar on one track – and titles include "Calhoun Square", "Budapest", "Old Soul", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Praise", "Hope", and "Diamond". CD

King Britt/Philadelphia ExperimentKing Britt Presents Philadelphia Experiment Remixed ... CD
Ropeadope, 2002. Used ... $6.99
An incredible record – far greater than we even expected! The setup is simple: King Britt and his crew remix the tapes from 2001's experimental jazz jam session by a trio of fellow Philadelphians – drummer Ahmir Thompson (The Roots), jazz bassist Christian McBride, and keyboardist Uri Caine. Britt's really blown his top here – taking the original album (great in its own right), and turning it into a set of cosmic grooves that bear almost no relation to the initial work, yet still keep its soulful heart. The depth of the project is stunning – way more than just simple remix tricks, and a whole new level of expression that shows why Philly is fast becoming the music capitol of the 21st Century. Includes work by Rob Yancey, Charlie Dark, Phillip Charles, Oba Funke, Vikter Duplaix, The Randy Weston Experience, DJ Ghe, and Britt himself – with titles that include "South Street", "Paul Edwards The Orange Line (lle lfe)", "(Re)Moved (Oba Funke Far Re-Moved dub)", "Diamond Street", "Philadelphia Experiment (rmx)", "Delaware Avenue", "Miles Hit (Rob Life mix)", "Broad & Cecil B Moore", "Brown Street", and "Groover The III (the theme to massagejawn.com)". Mark De Clive-Lowe Presents ChurchMark De Clive-Lowe Presents Church ... CD
Mashibeats/Ropeadope, 2014. Used ... $11.99
Mark De Clive-Lowe takes us to church – with a set that's easily his most soulful, spiritual record ever! The album's got a lot more acoustic elements than usual – plenty of jazz elements on tenor, flute, trumpet, and percussion – mixed with Mark's own great Fender Rhodes and other keyboards – some of which shift the sound of the acoustic instruments in the process! The shift is a bit like that taken by Jimi Tenor with his own music in recent years, but the overall sound is still very much in the soaring, cosmic territory we've always loved from Mark – but there's also a much deeper connection to the planet as well. Wonderful throughout – a great step forward for an artist we already love so much – and titles include "Sketch For Miguel", "Now Or Never", "Nova Roda", "The Mission", "Distractions", "Mason's Galaxy", "Imam", and "Sun Up Sun Down". Ropeadope, 2019. Used ... $3.99
A tight blend of hip hop, funk, and soul – served up with a lot of dark currents around the edges, and in a criss-crossing style that reminds us of some of the hipper experiments of this type from the New York downtown scene in years back! There's distortion at the edge, and lots of moody elements in the middle – and the vocals are a mix of sung and spoken, often with a sense of intensity that recalls the urgency of late 80s/early 90s hip hop – but delivered with maybe more of a 21st Century funk sensibility. Chance HaydenGet Somethin' ... CD
Ropeadope/Atlanta, 2018. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
Tight guitar from Chance Hayden – a player who definitely knows how to get a lot of color and tone out of his instrument, even while picking out a sharp note solo! There's a dexterity in Hayden's style that's clearly inspired by the more proficient blues guitarists in recent generations – but the overall sound here is much more jazz funk, with a core quartet that features keyboards, bass, and drums – all in a nicely lean sound that allows Chance to shine in the spotlight at a level that's a bit like Eddie Roberts (of New Mastersounds fame) on some of his solo sets. Jarrod Lawson provides guest vocals on a great version of the Donny Hathaway tune "Someday We'll All Be Free" – and other tracks include "Hung Up On My Baby", "Get Somethin", "Matrix", "Take The Call", "Kissing My Love", "Many Disguises", and "You Mother You". Greg Hester & FriendsSoul Brother Where Art Thou – A Tribute To James Brown ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
Singer Greg Hester pays tribute to the late Godfather – and does so in a nice way that moves things past the usual! There's definitely plenty of funk in the music – and the band also includes some of James' old bandmates too – but Greg's got a nice blue-eyed soul approach, maybe a bit like Van Morrison at times – which makes for a record that's very much his own, rather than a slavish copycat of the legend. Fred Wesley plays plenty of strong trombone leads on the record – and the set also features guest appearances from Ivan Neville, Shana Morrison, Col Bruce Hampton, Caroline Aiken, Jimmy Hall, and others. Titles include "Try Me", "Think", "There Was A Time", "Open The Door", "Lickin Stick", "Soul Power", and "Get Up Offa That Thing". CD

Ropeadope, 2017. Used ... $5.99
The title definitely sums up the vibe of the record – because although Trevor Lawrence is the drummer at the core, he's also clearly a hell of a warm personality, too – with a very welcoming vibe that makes the album's array of musicians and guest artists feel right at home! The set's jazz at the core, but with a strong dose of contemporary soul – maybe a bit in the territory of the Robert Glasper Black Radio projects, but with a vibe that's definitely all Trevor's own! The rhythms are rock-solid, and instrumentation often features some mighty sweet keyboards from Kenneth Crouch, Wow Jones, Tabor Gable, and others – alongside other musicians who include Kamasai Washington on tenor, Maurice Mo Betta Brown and Nico Segal on trumpet, Chelsea Baratz and Terrace Martin on saxes, Teodross Avery on tenor, and Nicholas Payton on trumpet. There's just a bit of vocals on the set – sung by Preston Harris, Jimi James, Donna Missal, and oddly LeAnn Rimes – but the instrumental core is what drives the set – on titles that include "Car Vibe", "B Side", "Bring The Party", "The Guts", "11 & 8", "Lovestoned", "Huh", "Alicia's Song", and "Relationships". A smoking little set from Ramsey Lewis – one that really recalls the best electric years of his 70s recordings – and which also has a much sharper sound than some of the other albums recorded with the Urban Knights! There's plenty of great piano on the record from Ramsey, mixed with keyboards from Tim Gant – and the blend has that warm mix of acoustic and electric that Columbia would feature on some of their more soulful fusion albums of the 70s – and which is never overdone here in the production or arrangements, given that the group is nice and lean – with just Henry Johnson on guitar, Charles Heath on drums, and Joshua Ramos on bass. Keyboardist Jason Miles has a long legacy in jazz – both as a sideman with bigger names, and as a leader on his own – but this set with his Kind Of New group may well be one of his best so far – a sweet batch of electric grooves that goes a long way towards updating older styles of keyboard funk! Miles has a wonderful way of letting the right sort of spaces fall between the notes – a vibe that takes us back to the best early work by Bobby Lyle or Rodney Franklin – and like both of those musicians, he knows that the best way into a groove is to take things easy, and let the music find itself – which it does wonderfully on the mixture of tunes included in the set. The set features work from Reggie Washington, Jay Rodriguez, and Steven Wolf – and titles include "The Other Side Of The World", "Black Magic", "Kathy's Groove", "Wolfdelic", "Kat's Eye", and "Jean Pierre". N'sawa-SaracaAnother Town ... CD
Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy ... $9.99 12.99
The second album from a really great group – the brainchild of keyboardist Yasushi Karasawa, who has a way of putting together his sounds that's very unique! There's a freshness here that reminds us of the excitement we first felt when falling in love with Japanese groups back in the 90s – not that Yasushi Karasawa is in the same territory as Nobukazu Takemura or Jazztronik, but his music has this way of refining itself down from its influences – really separating itself with its execution – still jazz, but maybe more sharply defined from the pack! One of the unusual elements in the album is the presence of Raphael Sebbag from UFO – who doesn't really sing, but provides a bit of voice from time to time – and the rhythms also separate the group from the usual jazz combo, as they're spacious and blocky – not trying for a groove at all, but somehow finding a gentle one in the space between the notes. Karsawa's keys are great – nice and warm, and balanced with raspy tenor from Osdamu Inoue – plus bass from Yoshimasa Otsuka and drums from Yosuke Hase – on titles that include "Vt Vt", "Cross Point", "Another Town", "Preachy", "Dual Butterfly", and "Nepenthes". A nice little record from Jon Regen – a singer who works in a space that's somewhere in between jazz and more familiar singer/songwriter modes – in a legacy that might begin with Ben Sidran in the 70s, and come up to present work by an artist like Jamie Cullum! Regen's got a nicely warm sound in his approach – but not one that's too smooth or commercial – as most of these songs are very understated, and done with a mix of lead piano instrumentation and other touches around the edges – sometimes maybe a bit of stepped-up rhythm, but never in a way that challenges the vocals. Titles include "Hole In My Heart", "Every Night", "Goodnight New York", "New Sensation", "Who Cares If Everybody Else Knows", "Jupiter Calling", and "Higher Ground". CD

Royal Krunk OrchestraPyramids – Opus 4 No 2 ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. Used ... $7.99
Really great work from the Royal Krunk Jazz Orchestra – an album that's much more ambitious and far-reaching than their previous album – with a sense of majesty we never would have expected the last time around! As before, there's no real "krunk" here at all – and instead, the group soar to the skies with a contemporary take on spiritual jazz inspirations – using the pyramids for inspiration in a way that hearkens back at the ancient/future spirit of Earth Wind & Fire – rediscovering a lost sense of legacy and spirit, then moving forward to reclaim a throne of greatness! Maybe that sounds a bit high-handed, but the music is anything but – and instead weaves together trumpets, trombones, and saxes with effortless ease and a real sense of organic energy – flowing with keyboards and percussion that keep things grounded on the planet, while Dionne Farris provides some occasional vocals. Titles include "The Regyptian Blues", "Kabla Khufu", "The Question Of Time", "Black Indian Rain Dance", "Olmec", and "Voyage Of The Pyramid Builders". CD

David Sanchez kicks off the album's liner notes with a great discussion on the African diaspora and its influence on music – one that's always been strongly felt in David's recordings, but which seems to come through even more strongly here! The record's definitely jazz, but borrows lots of rhythmic conceptions from around the globe – using a fair bit of percussion at the bottom of the sound, which is balanced nicely with strong, soulful tenor lines from Sanchez, waves of color on the guitar from Lage Lund, and a mix of piano and Fender Rhodes from Luis Perdomo! There's some especially great interplay between the angularity of the tenor and the warmer, rounder currents of the guitar – on titles that include "Madigra", "Wave Under Silk", "Mirage", "Fernando's Theme", "Canto", "Land Of The Hills", and "Iwa". A jazz trio with a very unique sound – one that appears to be rooted in Brazilian music, according to some of the notes in the CD – but which, to our ears, sounds a bit more contemporary and individual to the group! The rhythms are very dynamic – a nice change from more familiar use of piano, bass, and drums – and although some tracks feature added Brazilian percussion, things change up nicely even when that instrumentation is not in the mix – as the three core musicians really have a way of leaping forward strongly with a cohesive pulse – but still with enough space that allows keyboardist David Ryshpan spin out some great solos on his own. Ryshpan also plays Fender Rhodes on four of the album's tracks, and accordion on one more – and titles include "Ancestral", "Pilgrimage Suite", "A Bandeira Do Bruxo", "Moa Vive (parts 1 & 2)", and "Electric Variation". The album's a real back-to-basics one for Charlie – a return to the sort of small combo grooving that first made him stand out from the pack back in the early 90s. The format is simple – Charlie's unique 8 string guitar solos over a quintet with tenor sax, trombone, chromatic harmonica, and drums – and the feel is like some of the sweetest grooving electric sides from the 70s. The trio here features Charlie on his usual 8 string guitar, plus Derrek Phillips on drums and John Ellis on tenor sax, bass clarinet, Wurlitzer, and melodica – the last of which sounds really great, and works well with Hunter's slinkier lines on the slower tunes. Phillips drumming gets nice and heavy at times, returning an undercurrent of funk to Hunter's work – and titles include "Frontman", "Cueball Bobbin", "Swamba Redux", "Blue Sock", "The Pursuit Package", and "Drop The Rock". We loved the Phoenix album by keyboardist Javier Santiago – and although this set bills itself as if it's a relation to that record, it's more of a completely different effort – but one that's equally fantastic as well! Santiago is a tremendous up-and-coming talent – a hell of a pianist, and also great on Fender Rhodes – working in that sense of rhythm that's been unlocked in the 21st Century by a few key figures in jazz – and which a new generation of players like Javier is taking in some wonderful directions of their own! At the best moments, there's a feel here that's almost like some European fusion outing from the 70s – a groove that's spare, yet full of raw instrumental power. A hard-driving set from the great Eddie Palmieri – and a record that's maybe his strongest salsa effort in years, even though it's still filled with lots of the edgey, jazzy touches he's also brought to his best material in recent decades! The album's got a very strong lead vocal presence – both from Herman Olivera and Gilberto Santa Rosa, both of whom join Eddie's group and provide a strong focus for the ensemble's jazzy performances – with an especially strong sax section that includes work from Craig Handy, Ralph Moore, Gary Smulyan, and Ronnie Cuber! A spacious second set from British/Bahraini trumpeter Yazz Ahmed – a record that features dedications to feminist inspirations on every single track – but which has a soaring, righteous quality that marks Ahmed as an inspirational force of her own! The songs are long, and the music is rich in textural elements – strong trumpet solos from the leader, but also a globe's worth of contributions from other members of the contemporary London scene in which Ahmed's been making waves for the past few years – with a level of expression that maybe matches some of our favorite recent jazz releases on the Brownswood label! If you know the charms of the London scene in recent years, you'll have plenty to love here – and will find yourself adding Yazz to a list of artists to keep your ears on. A very cool little record, and one that maybe shows the better directions that fusion has taken in the 21st Century – still as electric and vibrant as before, but really exploding with new ideas and an especially strong ear for the rhythmic side of the music! By that, we don't mean that the record is funky – but maybe more chunky and cosmic – driving forward with these great blocky keyboard lines from Casimir Liberski, which seem to be heavy on Rhodes – then pushed forward even more with electric bass from Louis De Mieulle and drums from Matt Garstka! This is cosmic electric jazz that's clearly aware of all that came before, but which also soars forward with great energy of its own – the kind of record we hope to be hearing more from Casimir in the future, with titles that include "Strident Laser Shard", "White Lighter", "Violent Absinthe", "Stasis", "Azuwi", and "Cosmic Liberty". The genius of Eddie Palmieri never seems to dim at all as the years go on – and, if anything, the genius only seems to flower even more – finding new ways of expression that maybe even blow away some of Eddie's classic work from the 60s and 70s! This set is amazing – a fantastically modern refiguring of Latin roots – with elements that stretch back to Palmieri's earliest charanga years and his Latin jazz rebirth, but used in ways that are very different – and very striking throughout! A great second chapter to the Little Big album from Aaron Parks – a set that's full of as many great keyboard lines as that one – with Aaron on a mix of acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and other sweet keys – plus vibes as well! And as with that set, the keyboards are balanced by the sharp, raspy tones of Greg Tuohey on guitar – a player who almost gets key-like tones from his instrument at times, using it sparely, and with a nice sense of resonance that really helps shape the mellow grooves of the sound! The rest of the group features David Dinyard on bass and Tommy Crane on drums and percussion – and titles include "My Mistake", "Friendo", "Solace", "Here", "Is Anything Okay", "The Storyteller", "The Shadow & The Self", and "Where Now". ✨✧ Royal Krunk OrchestraPyramids – Opus 4 No 2 ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock

✨✧ Christian Scott Atunde AdjuahChristian Scott Atunde Adjuah – Ancestral Recall ... LP
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really great showcase for the continuing evolution of Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah – a musician who's become so much more than just a straight jazz trumpet with a soulful vibe – as you'll hear on this really compelling set! The music is even more expansive than Christian's recent trilogy for Ropeadope – especially in the rhythms, which are both earthily percussive, and very forward-thinking – kicked up way past standard jazz rhythms, and driven by a heck of a lot of percussion as well – including some from Scott himself! The man also handles a variety of hip horns in addition to his trumpet – including a reverse flugelhorn, and another horn of his own creation – in a group that also features lots more percussion, a bit of piano, and guest vocalists who include Saul Williams, Mike Larry Draw, Chris Turner, and Devan Mayfield. The sound of the record is tough to describe in easy words – but if you loved the recent Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah, you'll find yourself maybe loving this one even more. Titles include "Songs She Never Heard", "Prophesy", "Forever Girl", "The Shared Stories Of Rivals", "I Own The Night", and "Ancestral Recall". LP, Vinyl record album

Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the strongest jazz albums we've heard from drummer Mike Clark in years – a set that burns right from the start, and really lives up to the heavyweight lineup that includes Donald Harrison on alto, Rob Dixon on tenor, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Antonio Farao on piano, and Christian McBride on bass! The tunes are live, and roll out of the gate with tremendous strength and sympathy between the players – and Farao's piano is an especially strong force next to the bass of McBride – this rich undercurrent that just seems to lift everyone up, and help them find their best voice as they roll into the flow. Dixon and Farao contributed some great original material to the set – and titles include "Of Infinity", "Past Lives", "If We Must Die", "Lucky No 7", and "Black Inside". CD

One of the most compelling mixes of steel pans and jazz we've ever heard – played by a group led by percussionist Jonathan Scales, and featuring a number of other differently-tuned steel drums in the mix! The instrumentation just features bass and drums alongside all the pans – which leaves the sound to come almost exclusively from the combined colors and tones of the mighty steel lineup – all used in a way that's much more complex and fluid than some of the simpler projects of this nature, which usually just try to add a bit of swing to a core Caribbean approach. The album is billed as a "concerto" – and titles include "The Man", "The Mouse", "The Mud", "The Mean", "The Maze", and "The Mad". CD

Really great work from this up-and-coming combo – a group who seems like they can spin together neo soul and hip hop better than most of the rest – and who also make great use of some live jazzy instrumentation as well! The set compiles live performances done around the midwest in recent years – but there's a quality to the sound that may well have been done in the studio, such is the focus and tightness of the combo. Marga Marion handles lead vocals, and Rico Sisney is the MC – on titles that include "Thin Line", "Blue", "Get It Right", "Five Twelve", "Paintbrush", "Vibration", "Them Us", and "So Close". CD

Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A trio of tenorists from the Brooklyn scene – Michael Eaton, Sean Sonderegger, and James Brandon – working here with just the bass of Brad Jones and drums of G Calvin Weston for support! The mix of three horns, bass, and drums is totally great – as the players leap along between rhythm, melody, and individual expressions – in a way that's sometimes got a reed-like take on brass band modes, but which more frequently recalls some of the sax quartet experiments of the 80s, but with more rhythm at the core – maybe no surprise, since the notes have a dedication to Bern Nix, and a quote on harmelodics from Ronald Shannon Jackson! Eaton also blows soprano, and Sonderegger bass clarinet – and titles include "The Beat Down", "The Fifth", "Parallax", "Mushi Mushi", "Try Tones", and "Blues For Bern". CD

Jazz & People (France), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Thiefs are a jazz combo at the core – outfitted with saxes, acoustic bass, and drums – but all three members also use a fair bit of electronics, and do so in a way that opens the door to a range of different voices that help shape the sound of the record! The mode is a bit like some of the more creative jazz-inspired projects coming from the LA scene of late – such as work on the Ropeadope label – and there's definitely some righteous power to the vocals on the set, thanks to contributions from Mike Ladd, Gael Faye, and Guillermo E Brown. Aaron Parks plays piano and keyboard on most of the set – and there's a vibe here that's a bit like his own work too – on titles that include "I Live In Fear", "Anthro", "Pas D'Ici", "Iwbah", "Beat One", and "Anthro".
