Clifton AndersonBeen Down This Road Before ... CD
Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
Trombonist Clifton Anderson always makes us wait way too long between his albums as a leader – but each of his sets is definitely worth the anticipation, and seems to push Clifton's music forward a fair bit more than before! This album's a gem through and through – all original music, save one Bacharach tune – played with a core group that includes Stephen Scott on piano, Buster Williams on bass and either Ronnie Burrage or Al Foster on drums – but open to a shifting array of players who include Peter Bernstein on guitar, Antoine Roney on soprano and tenor, Rene McLean on tenor, and Victor See Yuen on percussion – players who open things up past Anderson's already-great phrasing on the trombone, which is especially striking on a few tunes that feature some less conventional instrumentation. Titles include "Nana D", "Mission Statement", "TUBC", "Sista Gemini", "Sonny Says", "Been Down This Road Before", and "Mysticancients". CD

Jorge Luis PachecoLockdown ... CD
Ropeadope, 2022. New Copy ... $11.99 13.99
Keyboardist Jorge Luis Pacheco works here mostly in a trio format, but has a way of coming across with a much broader sound – partly through his surprisingly deft command of the keyboard, which you might not expect from his youthful image on the cover – partly through the combination of the instrument with some additional layers of sound – used gently next to the bass of Helmut Reuter and drums of Thomas Hempel. Singer Anna Rabea Pacheco appears on two of the album's eight tracks, but most are instrumental – and titles include "Chan Chan", "705 Y Medio", "Sonnet 18", "To Oscar", "La Conga", and a remake of the Bee Gees classic "How Deep Is Your Love". Eddie PalmieriFull Circle ... CD
Ropeadope/Uprising, 2018. Used ... $11.99
Fantastic work from Eddie Palmieri – sounding here as if he hasn't changed a thing since the 70s! With most artists, that would be a critique – but given that during the 70s, Eddie was constantly ablaze with creative activity, and always pushing his boundaries – we mean that statement as a compliment in the best possible way – because all these many years later, Palmieri is still setting the standard for everything that can be done in Latin jazz, and reminding us that few folks can ever reach the heights to which he's taken us over the years! Eddie's been sneaking a few killer albums on the market over the past decade or so, and this is the latest in that run – completely away from any more commercial inclinations, and done in a burning descarga mode that allows Eddie's piano to really open up in a killer jazz lineup that includes Jimmy Bosch and Conrad Herwig on trombones, Jonathan Powell on trumpet, Louis Fouche on trumpet, Luques Curtis on bass, and Camilo Molina on timbales! Herman Olivera sings lead vocals, but the tracks are long and feature lots of jazzy solos – on titles that include "Paolo Pa Rumba", "Oyelo Que Te Conviene", "Linda Yambu", "Azucar", "Vamanos Pa'L Monte", and "Muneca". Philadelphia ExperimentPhiladelphia Experiment ... LP
Ropeadope, 2001. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $33.99 43.99
A now-legendary set from the Philadelphia underground at the start of the century – a package that reminds us just how much great music has always been going on in the city, often far from the mainstream! This set corrected that fact, by bringing together a trio of three genre-stepping musicians – drummer Questlove, jazz bassist Christian McBride, and keyboardist Uri Caine, who plays some great Fender Rhodes and Hammond B-3 on the set! The core grooves are by the trio, working together in a way that's not that different from the freestyle funk of Medeski, Martin, & Wood back when they used to care a bit more about the groove – and the group's joined on a few tracks by guests, including Pat Martino on guitar, Jon Swana on trumpet, and Larry Gold on cello. The best cuts on the set have a hard beat underneath, warm rolling basslines, and washes of keyboards over the top to keep things nice and sweet. Titles include "The Miles Hit", "Call For All Demons", "Grover", "Ain't It The Truth", "Mister Magic", "Philadelphia Freedom", and "Lesson #4". LP, Vinyl record album

Logan RichardsonBlues People ... CD
Ropeadope, 2018. Used ... $4.99
Logan Richardson's really on fire here – sounding a bit different than any of his previous records, but equally creative overall! The set's got an unusual format – two guitars and electric bass dominate the middle, with heavy drums from Ryan Lee, and these very openly-blown alto parts from Richardson – sometimes as textural waves of sound, sometimes sharp and pointed, and always up to the challenges of the shifting scapes of the styles! There's a fair bit of darkness in the mix – maybe similar to some of the brooding instrumental funk of Meshell N'Degeocello – and the heavy use of guitar might be seen as a nod to the blues roots hinted at by the title – but the overall sound is very different. Titles include "The Settlement", "With You", "Uraban Life", "Pure Change", "Class Wars", "Underground", "Country Boy", "Hunter Of Soul", and "80s Child". CD

Christian ScottChristian Scott Atunde Adjuah – Centennial Trilogy (Ruler Rebel/Diaspora/Emancipation Procrastination) (3CD set) ... CD
Stretch/Ropeadope, 2017. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99 23.98
A trio of fantastic albums from Christian Scott – all packaged together! First up is Ruler Rebel – a fantastic step forward for trumpeter Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah – an artist who takes on a new name with this recording, and a vibrant new sound as well! Scott still plays trumpet, but he also works with some electronics and effects, too – in a group that mixes acoustic elements from piano, flute, and percussion with electric work on Fender Rhodes and guitar – all in a sound that's swirlingly soulful, and as enigmatic as you might expect! The music reaches back to some deeper roots, but reworks the sound completely with lots of contemporary elements – and Scott's trumpet takes on a new sort of majesty in the setting – maybe hitting the promise we first saw in his music years back, but with even more focus here. Titles include "Encryption", "The Coronation Of X A Tunde Adjuah", "The Reckoning", "Ruler Rebel", and "New Orleanian Love Song". Next is Diaspora – a set that has Christian Scott really opening with a new sense of pride and power after adopting the Atunde Adjuah name – and blowing here not just on trumpet, but also "reverse flugelhorn", sirenette, and siren – and also using some sonic architecture to open up and expand his sound! Rhythms are a compelling mix of drum programs and acoustic percussion – peppered with work on alto, Fender Rhodes, bass, guitar, and drums – in this groove that's much more sharp-edged and sonically compelling than most other projects of this nature. Titles include "Lawless", "Our Lady Of New New Orleans", "IDK", "Desire & The Burning Girl", "Completely", "No Love", and "The Walk". Last is Emancipation Proclamation – part of Scott's brilliant trilogy that has him reworking his sound even more than before – using his horn in both acoustic and electric settings, and mixing with bits of funk and deeper musical currents – all at a level that's vaguely in the territory of Don Cherry in the 70s, but served up with a vibe that's very much Christian's own! Rather than be buried in the mix of percussion, Fender Rhodes, and other horns here – Scott seems to be set free, and really opens up with both the space of his solos, and the style of his phrasing – which is even more personal than before. The other players are great, too – a shifting lineup who retain the same bristling energy throughout – on titles that include "Ashes Of Our Forever", "The Emancipation Procrastination", "AvengHer", "Cages", "New Heroes", "Videotape", "The Cypher", "Michele With One L", and "Unrigging November". ✨✧ Lakecia BenjaminPursuance – The Coltranes ... CD
Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The music of the Coltranes – both John and Alice – taken into wonderful directions by saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin – a younger player who clearly feels the influence of the Great One in a very deep way, but isn't about to just offer up a straight copy of the family spiritual legacy! Part of the difference lies in the fact that Lakecia plays alto, not tenor or soprano – but there's also this energy here that's really fresh, too – maybe a more compact take on the ideas of the songs, but also strongly collaborative too – as the record features contributions from so many other great artists – Gary Bartz and Steve Wilson on alto, Meshell Ndegeocello and Reggie Workman on bass, Marc Cary on piano, Brandee Younger on harp, and Georgia Anne Muldrow and Dee Dee Bridgewater on vocals. The lineup changes nicely throughout the album, and there's many flavors of reflection in this Coltrane rainbow – on titles that include "Turiya & Ramakrishna", "Om Shanti", "Alabama", "Acknowledgement", "Liberia", "Central Park West", "Sprial", "Syeeda's Song Flute", and "Pursuance". ✨✧ Christian Scott Atunde AdjuahAxiom – Live At The Blue Note ... LP
Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic chapter in the continuing evolution of trumpeter Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah – a set recorded at the Blue Note in New York, just days before the city had to shut down in 2020 – and a record that maybe carries with it some of the urgency of that moment! Scott's studio records in recent years have really blown us away – but it's maybe even more amazing here to hear him working with the group in this frenzy of colors, tones, and rhythms! In addition to conventional trumpet, Christian blows a reverse flugelhorn, which has an amazing sound – and his group features really intense work on drums from Cory Fonville, whose efforts on the kit seem to set everyone else on fire – a lineup taht features Lawrence Fields on piano and Rhodes, Kris Funn on bass, Weedie Braimah on percussion, and Elena Pinderhughes on flute. The music is tremendous – full of power, life, and message – on titles that include "Diaspora", "The Last Chieftain", "X Adjuah", "Huntress", "Incarnation", "Songs She Never Heard", "Guinnevere", and "Sunrise In Beijing". ✨✧ Ulf Ivarsson & Bill LaswellNammu ... CD
Ropeadope, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The cover's got a really heavy sort of image – of the type that you might have seen on some of the classic Axiom label releases from bassist Bill Laswell many years back – but the approach here is a bit different, and nicely touched by the spirit of the other members of the group! Drummer Ulf Ivarsson co-led the set with Laswell, and plays both acoustic and electric variations of his instrument – in a quintet that also has organ from Per Wiberg, drums from Hux Nettermalm, and baritone, alto, and bass clarinet from Thomas Backman – all players who work in the kind of rumbling territory you'd expect from Laswell – but with some moments that are a bit more open and organic too. Tracks are all quite long – and titles include "Kishar", "Anzang", "Agrun", and "Im Nun". CD

✨✧ Linda SikhakhaneIsambulo ... CD
Ropeadope, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Maybe not the first record from South African saxophonist Linda Sikhakhane, but a set that will definitely put him on the map – and make him one of the rising young stars of his nation's tremendous jazz legacy! Linda blows both tenor and soprano sax here, and has a sense of majesty that's incredible, given his young age – stepping out with a bold vision on a set of all original material that's woven together in a masterful tapestry of soul and sound! Some numbers echo older South African jazz rhythms, while others are more spiritual in presentation – and the blend of modes is wonderful throughout, as Sikhakhane works with players who include Lucca Fries on piano, Fabien Iannone on bass, and Jonas Ruther on drums. Titles include "Isambulo", "Umbhedesho", "Hymn For The Majors", "Gog'uldah", and "Inner Freedom Revisited". CD

✨✧ Eddie PalmieriMi Luz Mayor ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A hard-driving set from the great Eddie Palmieri – and a record that's maybe his strongest salsa effort in years, even though it's still filled with lots of the edgey, jazzy touches he's also brought to his best material in recent decades! The album's got a very strong lead vocal presence – both from Herman Olivera and Gilberto Santa Rosa, both of whom join Eddie's group and provide a strong focus for the ensemble's jazzy performances – with an especially strong sax section that includes work from Craig Handy, Ralph Moore, Gary Smulyan, and Ronnie Cuber! Carlos Santana serves up a few guitar parts on the record – and the group also features work from Jimmy Bosch and Conrad Herwig on trombones, and Brian Lynch and Jonathan Powell on trumpets – amidst plenty of percussion, and strong lead piano from Palmieri. Titles include "Mi Congo", "Chica Ni Lambo", "Abarriba Cumbiaremos", "Sun Sun Babae", "Yo Soy Mulato", "Tremendo Cumban", "Sonando Con Puerto Rico", and "El Resbaloso". CD

✨✧ Brenda Nicole MoorerMarrow ... CD
Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Great work from a really unique singer – a vocalist who's equally well-balanced between jazz and soul, and who uses that balance to great advantage throughout this well-crafted LP! Brenda's vocals and inflection definitely show a strong side of the understanding of the nuances you'd use in jazz – but she also works in tunes that are more soul-based, although still with a nice degree of complexity – instrumentation that changes from track to track, and which has way more going on than just beats and keyboards too. Tracks include "Marrow", "Catch Me Falling", "The Core", "Little Prayer", "Flying Lessons", "Return To Sender", and "Your Light". CD
