Little Joe BlueVery Best Of Little Joe Blue ... CD
Ronn/Fuel 2000, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $6.99
Great early work from Little Joe Blue – a wonderful set that shows all the strong promise and soulful power he had at the start! The package brings together formative sides cut by Blue for the Jewel/Paula label – tracks done after his initial Chess recordings, and which show this amazing vocal power all the way through – a way of reaching out and working the twists and turns of a lyric that few of his contemporaries could match! Production is nice and basic – the best you could hope for from the label at the time – and titles include "Peaceful Man", "Standing On The Threshold", "Don't Stop Loving Me", "Shakin Hands With The Judge", "Gonna Walk On", "Sometime Tomorrow", and "Little Joe Blue". CD

✨✧ Ronnie BarronReverend Ether (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Decca/Big Pink (South Korea), 1971. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
One of the few albums ever issued by Ronnie Barron – an artist with a long range of work on the New Orleans scene, ties to Dr John, and even a role in the Woodstock scene of the early 70s – all of which really come through on this well-done set! Barron's got all the roots in his music that you'd guess from that legacy – some Nola moments in the rhythms, and a great ability to add a lot of character to his lyrics – sometimes shifting nicely from track to track, and bringing a lot of funky charm to the whole thing! Titles include "Duke Of Crenshaw", "Happy Happy Happy", "Let It Shine", "Freeway Mama", "Louisiana Flood", and "Don't Let My Husband Catch You". CD

Ronnie BoykinsWill Come Is Now (aka Ronnie Boykins) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
ESP, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 26.99
A rare non-Sun Ra session from bassist Ronnie Boykins! Boykins was one of Ra's most long-term players – a key part of the Arkestra for many years – but on this album, he hits a totally different sound –and one that's somewhat spiritual as well! The group's got a great sax-heavy sound that comes from a trio of reedmen – Monty Waters, Joe Ferguson, and James Vass – handling alto, tenor, soprano, and flute between them – often in a tight line at the head, then breaking out into some wonderfully personal solos – played with such feeling that almost makes us think that Boykins was a much more sensitive musician than he ever got the chance to be with Sun Ra. The tunes have a really beautiful sense of structure and soul – and the reedmen explode beautifully with their work, alongside a remaining lineup that features Daoud Haroom on trombone, Art Lewis on percussion, and George Avaloz on congas. Titles include "Tipping On Heels", "The Third I", "The Will Come, Is Now", "Starlight At The Wonder Inn", and "Demon's Dance". LP, Vinyl record album

Till BronnerThat Summer ... LP
Verve (Germany), 2004. New Copy 2LP ... About July 29, 2022 (delayed)
One of our favorite albums ever from German trumpeter Till Bronner – and one of the few to perfectly balance both his vocal and instrumental talents! The sound here is more jazzy soul than straight trumpet jazz – and Bronner's warmly mellow vocals are cast in some beautiful backings that slink nicely along – never too over the top, never too contemporary soul sounding – but with a really careful balance that's just right for the spacious Bronner approach! We'd rank this one right up there with Till's Chattin With Chet and Blue Eyed Soul albums – and titles include "Bein Green", "Your Way To Say Goodbye", "Antonio's Song", "When Your Lover Has Gone", "Estrada Branca", "So Right So Wrong", and "Rising Star". Clarke Boland Big BandComplete Live Recordings At Ronnie Scott's – Volcano/Rue Chaptal ... CD
MPS/Rearward (Italy), 1969. New Copy ... $18.99 24.98
A large group in a small club – the legendary Clarke Boland Big Band, playing at the home turf of one of their key members – tenorist Ronnie Scott! The set features a very legendary performance by the ensemble – a crack lineup that's easily one of the best ever sported by the CBBB – perfectly mixing American rhythms, and a trans-Atlantic lineup of soloists – all tied together with just the sort of rich arrangements that make the group so great! Things groove right from the get-go – thanks to a rhythm lineup that features Kenny Clarke on drums, and Francy Boland on piano – plus bassist Ron Matthewson, sitting in for the usual Jimmy Woode. The horn players really send things off, though – tight trumpets from Benny Bailey, Idrees Sulieman, and Dusko Goykovich; bold trombones from Ake Persson and Nat Peck; and some searing reed lines from Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor, Derek Humble on alto, Sahib Shihab on baritone, and Tony Coe on both tenor and clarinet. This CD features both the first and second sets at Scotts by the group – albums titled Volcano and Rue Chaptal – with titles that include "Volcano", "Griff's Groove", "Now Hear My Meanin", "Box 703 Washington DC", "Thence We Issued Out Again to See the Stars", "Rue Chaptal", "I Don't Want Nothin From Nobody & I Ain't Giving Nothin Away", "Sax No End", "Minor Blues", and "The Girl & The Turk". Blossom DearieBlossom Time At Ronnie Scott's ... CD
Verve, 1966. Used ... $6.99 8.99
A classic set of jazz vocals by Blossom Dearie, recorded at Ronnie Scott's nightclub when she was living in London during the mid 60s! The set's got a nice intimate feel, and is one of Blossom's best-ever jazz recordings. The record has little of the cocktail sound that marred some of her other releases, and more of the swinging jazz piano and vocals that you find on her best work. Blossom's voice is as unique as always, and the set's got some great groovy numbers, like "I'm Hip", "Once Upon A Summertime", "When In Rome", and "The Shape Of Things". Very nice vibe, with a good live feel and lots of interaction with the audience! CD
(Please note: rear artwork looks fine from the outside but has some glue and wear under the inner tray, a bit of clear tape, and is missing one spine – out of print and priced accordingly.)

Ronnie FosterReboot ... CD
Blue Note, 2022. New Copy ... $11.99 13.99
A long-overdue reboot in the career of keyboardist Ronnie Foster – a player who made some real magic on Blue Note in the 70s, then recorded on a number of other different labels – before stepping away from the studio for more than three decades! This set marks a great Blue Note return for Ronnie, and a strong back-to-basics use of the Hammond too – handled with the care of a long-trained master, but one who's also had plenty of phrasing experience on other keyboards too – which makes the record a nice change from a standard organ jazz outing. The group features plenty of great guitar from Michael O'Neill, drums from either Chris Foster or Jimmy Branley, and Latin percussion on a few tracks too – on titles that include "After Chicago", "Swingin", "Reboot", "J's Dream", "Carlos", and "After Conversation With Nadia" – plus a reworking of the Stevie Wonder classic "Isn't She Lovely". Chico Freeman & Arthur BlytheLuminous – Recorded Live At Ronnie Scott's Club ... CD
Ronnie Scotts (UK), 1989. Used ... $4.99
A great pairing of these two inventive reedmen – recorded in wonderfully warm company at Ronnie Scott's in London, with a fluid, open feel that marks the album as a standout in the 80s work of both players! Freeman's on tenor and soprano, and Blythe is on alto sax – and together, they blow these interwoven lines at the start of most tracks – then break out in free-thinking, soul drenched solos – urged on by the rhythmic work of John Hicks on piano, Donald Pate on bass, Norman Hedman on percussion, and Victor Jones on drums. Hicks brings in a lyrical touch that seems to shape the work of both players – and titles include "Naima's Love Song", "Avotja", "Footprints", "Luminous", and "You Are Too Beautiful". CD

The best of Ronnie Laws' 70s material, plus a few new tracks as well – an album that definitely lives up to its Classic Masters title! The music is awash in both jazz and soul modes – jazz, thanks to Ronnie's well-played solos, which soar out in an amazing blend of new ideas and on-the-money groove – and soul, with production that really helped Laws cross over to big audiences at the time – a blend that's like the best Blue Note jazz funk of the mid 70s! The new cuts include "City Girl" and "(You Are) Paradise" – and some of the classics include Wayne Henderson-produced gems, like "Friends and Strangers", "Saturday Evening", and the big big hit "Always There". Beautiful work from pianist Ronnie Mathews – an artist who never firmly got his due back in the 60s, but who's made some tremendous records in recent years, handled with exquisite care by the Japanese recording scene! This set's got Mathews at his lyrically soulful best – playing in a trio with Walter Booker on bass and Alvin Queen on drums – both of whom give the album a slightly deeper groove and a rhythmic sense that pushes Mathews piano into strong modally leaping lines on the best tunes. Titles include "Blues For Leslie", "Once I Love", "Old Folks", "Blues For Afterglow", and a surprisingly nice take on "MASH". CD

Ronnie Mathews, Roland Alexander, Freddie HubbardRonnie Mathews/Roland Alexander (Doin' The Thang/Pleasure Bent) ... CD
Prestige/New Jazz, 1961/1963. New Copy ... $4.99 18.98
2 lost sides of soul jazz – both of them rare gems on vinyl, and back-to-back here in one nicely priced CD package! Doin The Thang is an excellent bit of lost soul jazz piano work – featuring the highly underrated Ronnie Mathews, with a quartet that includes Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Charles Davis on baritone. The sound is very groovy, and very funky, with a feel that's more like some of the classic Blue Notes from the time than it is like the other Prestige recordings. Mathews' piano playing is perfect, and he grooves with a soulful firey edge, and lays down solos that blow away Hubbard and Davis. Tracks include "The Thang", "Ichi Ban", and "The Orient". Pleasure Bent is one of the few albums ever cut by the incredible tenor player Roland Alexander – an artist who appeared briefly on the scene during the early 60s, and the few recording's he's left us with are the consummate picture of hip soulful playing. This 1961 session features Alexander leading a group that includes Marcus Belgrave on trumpet, Ronnie Matthews on piano, Gene Taylor on bass, and Clarence Stroman on drums – and it's a laidback batch of lyrical tunes, nearly all penned by Alexander. Titles include "I'll Be Around", "Dorman Road", "Lil's Blues", and "Orders To Take Out". CD

Great work from Ronnie McNeir – one of our favorite mellow soul talents of the 70s! "Say You" is a tune that was done in the 60s by The Monitors – but Ronnie's version here is completely different – with a badass slow-stepping funky current that's a perfect counterpoint to his soaring vocals! "I'm Sorry" builds with a great early club groove – that kind of mode that has Ronnie McNeir right up there for Lamont Dozier in terms of 70s soul genius that was years ahead of its time! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Some of the earliest work as a leader from British saxophone legend Ronnie Scott – the first player on the scene in the postwar years who could rival the talents of American musicians on the horn! Scott sounds wonderful here – in material that's all small group combos, different than the larger groups in which he was sometimes lost – and Ronnie really makes the most of his solos, often blowing with a Sonny Stitt-like sense of economy that packs a hell of a lot into a little bit of space – often with a relatively subtle approach. A decade's worth of images from one of the hippest jazz clubs on the planet – London's Ronnie Scott's, which was home to some of the best performances in the city in the 60s! Photographer Freddy Warren was there through much of the decade – almost a fly on the wall for his access to the club and its performers – sometimes captured here onstage, sometimes in more unusual candid moments – mostly in black and white, but with a few color images too! The book has a good bit of text from Brit jazz historian Graham Marsh, and features dozens of wonderful shots – images of Sonny Rollins, Max Roach, Tubby Hayes, Duke Ellington, Yusef Lateef, Ella Fitzgerald, Jeanne Lee, Cannonball Adderley, and many others – even Ronnie himself! One of the all-time keyboard classics of the 70s – a completely different album than any other set from pianist Ronnie Foster – done with this laidback, open-ended groove that was years ahead of its time! The album's in some ways a blueprint for some of our favorite jazz-based hip hop – and although Ronnie's playing organ, on most of the cuts, he handles the instrument more like it's a Fender Rhodes! The set's a masterpiece in funky jazz, done with a sinister, soulful groove – with these amazing rhythms from players who include Gene Bianco on harp, Arthur Jenkins on congas, George Duvivier and Gordon Edwards on bass, Jimmy Johnson on drums, George Devens on vibes, and Gene Bertoncini on guitar – served up with some amazing arrangements from soul maestro Wade Marcus. In & Out (Germany), 2008. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the last recordings ever made by the legendary Johnny Griffin – a live date in honor of Griffin's 80th birthday, and one that shows the tenorist still very much at the top of his game! The group's an all-star lineup – with Roy Hargrove's trumpet and flugelhorn joining Griffin in the frontline – plus piano from David Newton and drums from Billy Cobham. Tracks are often long, and taken in that solo-focused mode you're likely to hear at Ronnie Scotts – although this date is a lot better recorded than some of the live material from the club in earlier years. Titles include "Lester Leaps In", "When We Were One", "Mentor", "The Blues Walk", "Hot Sake", and "The Jamfs Are Coming". CD

✨✧ Yusef LateefLive At Ronnie Scotts – 15th January 1966 ... LP
Gearbox (UK), 1966. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic lost slice of work from reedman Yusef Lateef – a performance recorded at the legendary Ronnie Scott's club in London, with backing from a trio that features the wonderful Stan Tracey! Tracey was a committed modernist who really helped shape the sound of the UK scene at the time – and his pairing here with Lateef is wonderful, as Stan seems to bring out some of the most spiritual, most exotic sounds from the saxphonist – shaping the music with his own creative and angular work on piano. Yusef blows flute, tenor, shenai, and xun – and overall, the whole thing's got a vibe that really takes us back to the brilliance of his late 50s sessions for Savoy – done with the same mix of modernism, exoticism, and soul. Titles include "Song Of Delilah", "Last Night Blues", "Yusef's Mood", "Angel Eyes", and "Blues For The Orient". LP, Vinyl record album

Prodigal, 1975. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great second album by the legendary Ronnie McNeir – one of the 70s' most overlooked soul talents! Like his other albums, this one's got Ronnie in a sweet mellow vibe – with some great songwriting and wicked keyboard work that shows that Ronnie was in total control of the overall sound of his music. The tracks are fragile and personal – but never too indulgent, just sung in an honest soulful voice that's almost without comparison during Ronnie's generation. Includes the singles "Wendy Is Gone" and "Saggitarian Affair", plus "Spirit Of Love", "Now She's Gone", "Baby Come Back Home", and "Give Me A Sign". Also features a number of tracks in which Ronnie plays all the instruments! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bill EvansEvans In England – Live At Ronnie Scotts ... CD
Resonance, 1969. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Bill Evans at the end of the 60s – sounding really wonderful here in a set of unreleased live recordings from London! Bill's got the fantastic Eddie Gomez here on bass – who really gets plenty of space to stretch out on the long tracks that make up most of the set – and Evans himself is very well-recorded, with a strong ear for that sense of tonal color that makes just about every pianistic choice from this period feel so completely unique! Marty Morell is on drums – as ever, a master of understatement, which really lets us fall in love all over again with Gomez and Evans – and the set features 18 tracks all recorded at Ronnie Scott's club in Soho, in December of 1969 – titles that include "So What", "Very Early", "Sugar Plum", "Our Love Is Here To Stay", "Waltz For Debby", "Round Midnight", "Elsa", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Turn Out The Stars", "Goodbye", "Re Person I Knew", and "Two Lonely People". ✨✧ Ronnie MathewsSelena's Dance ... CD
Timeless (Holland), 1988. Used ... Out Of Stock
Ronnie Mathews is a pianist we always love, no matter what the context – but here he's in this extra-great trio with bassist Stafford James, who almost seems to take center stage at times! James' deep, round tone is a perfect match for Mathews' approach to piano – and while Ronnie takes off on lyrical flights at times, Stafford has this grounding that balances things out beautifully – given some extra inspiration by the drums of Tony Reedus, who is the third key member of the trio. The title track alone – "Selena's Dance" – is worth the price of admission, and is this nine minute modal workout that shows everyone at top form. Some other numbers are mellower, but no less captivating – and tunes include "Stella By Starlight", "Blue Bossa", "Fee Fi Fo Fum", and "Body & Soul". CD

Resonance, 1972. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic lost work from Charles Mingus, from a very under-recorded time in his life – the same period in which he gave the world the seminal album Let My Children Hear Music! The setting's a live one – and as on some of Mingus' superb 60s concert sessions, there's a force and fire here that really surpasses the group's energy in the studio – long tracks that are filled with brilliant solo work, and handled by a sextet that includes Bobby Jones on tenor, Charles McPherson on alto, Jon Faddis on trumpet, John Foster on piano, and Roy Brooks on drums – a group with just the kind of young, imaginative horn players that Mingus always used to create a special sort of fire. Titles include the 19 minute "The Man Who Never Sleeps", the 30 minute "Mind Readers Convention In Milano", a 25 minute version of "Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress", and a 20 minute take on "Noddin Ya Head Blue" – plus a 35 minute jam on "Fables Of Faubus" and the shorter "Pops". ✨✧ Bill EvansLive At Ronnie Scott's – With Eddie Gomez & Jack DeJohnette ... CD
Resonance, 1968. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever release of a Bill Evans concert recorded at Ronnie Scotts in London – a place where he cut other work in other years, but maybe not at a level like this! The group is wonderful – Bill's budding relationship with the bassist Eddie Gomez, who was bringing a richness to the Evans piano that even previous players didn't reach – and who was also establishing the bass as as an important voice in the trio as Bill's piano! The drummer is Jack DeJohnette – a player who's just finding his voice in jazz, but a perfect choice for the others here – as the group handles material that includes "Waltz For Debby", "Very Early", "Emily", "Nardis", "Autumn Leaves", "Round Midnight", "Quiet Now", "Stella By Starlight", "Alfie", "Yesterdays", and "Turn Out The Stars". Features a 44 page booklet with previously unreleased photos, a new essay, and interviews with Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette! CD

✨✧ Tubby Hayes & Ronnie ScottJazz Couriers ... LP
Tempo/Jasmine (UK), 1957. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Hard wailing hardbop from one of the greatest players of the postwar European scene – the mighty tenor talent Tubby Hayes, heard hear in the company of his frequent late 50s partner Ronnie Scott! The album's one of the best the pair ever cut together – twin tenors on most tracks, but also a bit of vibes from Hayes as well – used sparingly, but at just the right points to color in some deeper sounds on the set. The rhythm section is great – with Terry Shannon on piano, Phil Bates on bass, Bill Eyden on drums – and trumpeter Jimmy Deuchar joins the quintet on 2 of the album's 8 tracks, making for a somewhat fuller sound at points. Hayes' solos alone are worth the price of admission – as perfectly-crafted as Sonny Rollins at this point in his career – and titles include "Plebus", "On A Misty Night", "Reunion", "Through The Night Roard The Overland Express", "Oh My", "Royal Ascot", and "A Foggy Day". Clifton AndersonBeen Down This Road Before ... CD
Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
Trombonist Clifton Anderson always makes us wait way too long between his albums as a leader – but each of his sets is definitely worth the anticipation, and seems to push Clifton's music forward a fair bit more than before! This album's a gem through and through – all original music, save one Bacharach tune – played with a core group that includes Stephen Scott on piano, Buster Williams on bass and either Ronnie Burrage or Al Foster on drums – but open to a shifting array of players who include Peter Bernstein on guitar, Antoine Roney on soprano and tenor, Rene McLean on tenor, and Victor See Yuen on percussion – players who open things up past Anderson's already-great phrasing on the trombone, which is especially striking on a few tunes that feature some less conventional instrumentation. Titles include "Nana D", "Mission Statement", "TUBC", "Sista Gemini", "Sonny Says", "Been Down This Road Before", and "Mysticancients". CD

70s live material from singer Ernestine Anderson – half from the Concord Jazz Festival, half from a London performance at Ronnie Scott's – hence the title! The first half has this swinging jazz festival vibe – Ernestine really reaching out to win over the crowd with her charms, and backing by a core trio with Hank Jones on piano, occasionally expanded into a bigger ensemble. The London tracks are a bit more intimate, and feature a trio with John Horler on piano – and some especially great phrasing from Anderson. A long-overdue look at the short but fantastic 60s legacy of The Artwoods – one of the coolest, hippest groups of the UK mod scene at the time – able to perfectly balance R&B inspirations and newly groovy styles! The group's named after singer Arthur Wood, brother of the legendary Ronnie Wood – and while we might be tempted to say there's a bit of early Faces/Stones vibe going on here, the group also have a sound that's very much all their own – and which explodes out wonderfully here in a full array of mid 60s music! CD1 features a massive 30 tracks – early singles, acetates, and EPs – as well as a number of cuts from BBC sessions too! CD2 features the full album Art Gallery, plus 11 more BBC session cuts – and CD3 features a full live set recorded in Denmark in 1967, never issued before! You gotta love the confidence in Blakey's title for this one – because even in the late 70s, over 20 years since starting the Jazz Messengers, he was still very much in his prime! The album has him working with a wonderful group that includes Bobby Watson, Curtis Fuller, David Schnitter, and James Williams – plus percussionist Ray Mantilla, added in on a few tracks to give the set a slightly fuller sound. Tracks are long, dynamic, and gorgeous – really stepping out with the warmth and imagination that Blakey never let die during his career – but which seemed to be burning as brightly during this stretch as it was during the few really noteworthy points of earlier years. The set features wonderful early readings of Watson tunes "Time Will Tell" and "To See Her Face" – plus "Kamal", "Jody", "Hawkman", "People Who Laugh", "Ronnie's A Dynamite Lady", and "1978". Ezz-Thetics/Hat Hut (Switzerland), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $16.99
A CD that brings together some important early work from altoist Marion Brown – two long tracks from the sessions for his Quartet album on ESP – and a later album issued only overseas! The set begins with the long tracks "Capricorn Moon" and "Mephistopheles" from Marion Brown Quartet – one of our favorite albums ever on the legendary ESP label – a rhythmic, soulful, early session by Marion Brown – recorded before his own albums on Impulse, but with a similar feel to the best new thing sessions of that label at the time! The group is superb – with Benny Maupin on sax, Alan Shorter on trumpet, Rashied Ali on drums, and Ronnie Boykins on bass, often playing in tandem with Reggie Johnson – for a unique double-pulsing feel that makes for a nice rhythmic thrust. Next are the tracks "Juba Lee" and "Iditus", from the album Juba Lee – brilliant work from Marion Brown – one of his first albums, and a great set of tracks that have a fragile New York avant style – almost ESP, but not as raw, and with the kind of soulful emotion that's always made Brown's work stand out from the rest of his crowd. The group on the album is a septet, with Beaver Harris on drums, Dave Burrell on piano, Bennie Maupin on tenor, Alan Shorter on trumpet, and Grachan Moncour III on trombone. CD

Edwards has a nice gutbuckety tone at times – the qualities you might hear from Hank Crawford or David Newman in the way they blended their sounds – but the overall feel is leaner and cleaner, too – not many cliches, and a kind of straightforward sound that really shows the new inroads that the LA soul jazz scene was making at the time. The set features a shifting lineup – piano from Amos Trice, Joe Castro, and Ronnie Ball – bass from Leroy Vinnegar and Ben Tucker – and drums from Al Levitt and Billy Higgins – on titles that include a whopping batch of originals like "Teddy's Tune", "Tempo De Blues", "Vintage '57", "Sunset Eyes", and "Takin Off". Plus, this CD's got some great notes, excellent packaging, and even includes 3 unreleased bonus cuts! CD

Executive SuiteExecutive Suite 1 ... LP
Polydor, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
A gem of a full-length set from Executive Suite – a Philly quartet who are probably best known for their singles in the 70s, but who really find a great way to open up here in the course of an expanded album! Some of the tracks are nice and long – done in a two-part style that really brings up some of the excellent Sigma Sound backing the group get for their vocals arranged with a nice early approach to Philly club by Patrick Adams, Bobby Martin, and the team of Norman Harris, Ronnie Baker, and Earl Young! The sound rivals some of the more famous Philly productions on Atlantic Records by bigger groups of the mid 70s – and titles include "You Got It (parts 1 & 2)", "When The Fuel Runs Out (parts 1 & 2)", "You Believed In Me (parts 1 & 2)", "I'm A Winner Now", and "Your Love Is Paradise". ✨✧ Norman FeelsNorman Feels (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Just Sunshine/Tidal Waves, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 29.99 On September 30, 2022
Mellow soul, sweeping strings, and sweet electric keys – a stone 70s classic from Norman Feels – one of the greatest soul singers you've never heard before! The album's Norman's first (of two), and is a vastly under-recognized gem – the kind of record that easily stands next to some of the best male sweet soul of the time – and which is awash in some of the best studio touches coming from the Philly or New Jersey scenes of the time. Norman's got a totally righteous voice – one that crackles with Marvin Gaye-like personality, yet which also glides along with the subtler soul of Ronnie McNeir – and he's arranged to perfection here by David Van De Pitte, who slides just the right amount of funk into the bottom of the grooves on the set. Titles include "Everything Is Going Our Way", "Something In Me", "They Said It Couldn't Be Done", "Something About Yo", "Don't", "Yes You Did" and "Today". LP, Vinyl record album

Female SpeciesTale Of My Lost Love ... LP
Numero, Early 70s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A tale of lost love, and lost music too – served up in this never-issued album from a very cool little group – a west coast girl pop outlet with a very dreamy sound! The group was formed by sisters Vicki and Ronnie Gosset, who'd later go on to greater fame as songwriters – but here, along with some female friends, they craft this music that really sparkles strongly, and which should have gotten the group some much bigger fame at the time! The style is a mix of late 60s girl group sounds and some headier 70s touches – including a bit of AOR polish and crossover country hooks in a few spots – but used in this really thoughtful, gentle sort of way – so that the group really retain their own sound throughout. As usual with the Numero Group, this is music you'd never hear otherwise – and titles include "Peace Of Mind", "Baby Buggy", "Bye Bye Bye", "Till The Moon Don't Shine", "Chinchilla Hat", "In The Moonlight", "Here Comes The Night", "Sooner Or Later", "There's A Rainbow", "Explain Why", "Tying The Leaves", and "Tale Of Lost Love". Ella FitzgeraldElla In London ... CD
Pablo/OJC, 1974. Used ... $6.99
Something groovy always happens to Ella Fitzgerald in London – and in the 60s and 70s, the city became home to some of her best post-Verve recordings! This date's a compelling live performance recorded at Ronnie Scotts in 1974 – with backing by a quartet that includes Tommy Flanagan on piano and Joe Pass on guitar – gently grooving behind Ella in a setting that's one of the most relaxed live dates we've ever heard her do. Some of the tunes feature a bit of patter on the introductions – showing the Fitzgerald charm that extended way beyond singing – and titles include "The Man I Love", "Everytime We Say Goodbye", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "You've Got A Friend", "Happy Blues", and "Lemon Drop". Sonny FortuneSound Of Sounds ... CD
Intermusic (Portugal), 1980. New Copy 2CD ... $7.99 14.99
A brilliant set from reedman Sonny Fortune – recorded after his well-known 70s recordings for Atlantic, with a looser, freer sound that's totally great! Fortune returns here to the spiritual quality of his roots – blowing alto, soprano sax, and flute on a double-length set of extended live numbers – each of which stretch out wonderfully, to give Sonny lots of room to solo! The group's a quartet – with Charles Eubanks on piano, Ben Brown on bass, and Ronnie Burrage on drums – and most tracks stretch well past the 10 minute mark, with lots of modal rhythms. Titles include "Sound Of Sounds", "Big Bop Shuffle", "Diabolo", "Turning It Over", "Come In Come Out Of The Rain", "Sunshower", "Paravillion", and "Invitation". CD

✨✧ Frank Foster & The Loud MinorityManhattan Fever (Denon) ... LP
Denon (Japan), 1977. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A real 70s stormer from Frank Foster – recorded with the Loud Minority ensemble used for the Mainstream album of the same name, done in a style that's a bit more straight ahead, yet still plenty darn soulful! Frank's hanging here between the two sides of his career – working in a larger band mode at one level, yet also scoring some charts that are a lot hipper than anything the Basie generation might have imagined! The rhythm section on the set features Mickey Tucker on piano, Earl May on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – augmented by a bit of extra percussion and guitar from time to time, in a way that really makes the tunes skip along nicely. Frank himself is on both soprano and tenor sax – sounding great on the album's title remake of his "Manhattan Fever" – and also stretching out on longer tunes that include Ronnie Matthews' great "Marie Jean", and Frank's originals "Thruway Traffic" and "Four Five Six". Steve GaddGaddabout ... CD
Electric Bird/King (Japan), 1984. Used ... $9.99 11.99
A sweet little album from drummer Steve Gadd – one that will more than make you forgive the title's wordplay on his last name! Steve's drums give the record a nice sort of punch that's sometimes missing from 80s fusion of this nature – a rhythm approach that still has the spontaneous energy of acoustic drums, when so many other fusion dates were using drum programs – great grounding from Gadd, which really helps give the right sort of direction to instrumentation from Richard Tee on keyboards, George Young on tenor and soprano sax, Lew Soloff on trumpet, and Ronnie Cuber on baritone. David Matthews arranged, but the overall vibe is looser than some of his records of the time – and titles include "The Duke", "Montauk Moon", "Gaddabout", "My Little Brother", and "Lucky 13". CD
(Out of print late 90's pressing. Disc has a small Japanese promo sticker.)

Gadd Gang (Steve Gadd)Here & Now ... LP
Columbia, 1988. Sealed ... $11.99 14.99
The Gadd Gang state their presence strongly on the cover and title of this late 80s set – just the kind of confidence you'd expect from a group that includes Steve Gadd on drums, Cornell Dupree on guitar, Richard Tee on keyboards, Ronnie Cuber on baritone, and Eddie Gomez on bass! All musicians have had plenty of jazz experience under their belts by the time of this set – which definitely shows in the way they turn out a set of instrumental fusion numbers based on older soul music classics – mostly tracks you'll know from famous vocal performances, served up here with a tightness that belies their roots. Titles include "I Can't Turn You Loose", "Signed Sealed Delivered", "Soul Serenade", "Tippin", "My Girl/Them Changes", and "A Whiter Shade Of Pale". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mike GibbsJust Ahead ... LP
Polydor (UK), 1972. Near Mint- 2LP ... Just Sold Out!
An ebullient groover from British arranger Mike Gibbs – quite possibly his funkiest album ever, and a great little session recorded live at Ronnie Scotts during a week's residency in 1972! As with other albums from the time, Gibbs is working here with a brilliant array of players who include some of the leading lights of the British jazz rock scene of the period – a lineup that includes Chris Spedding on guitar, Frank Ricotti on vibes, Chris Pyne on trombone, Kenny Wheeler and Harry Becket on trumpets, Ray Warleigh on sax and flute, and Alan Skidmore on soprano and tenor sax – all coming together in a blend of acoustic and electric elements that bristles with fresh imagination, free-thinking solos, and some nicely grooving rhythms. Tracks are all long, and titles include the Gibbs originals "So Long Gone", "Three", "Nowhere", and "Just A Head" – plus versions of "Sing Me Softly Of The Blues", "Grow Your Own", "Country Roads", and "Mother Of The Dead Man". LP, Vinyl record album

Dave GoldHeaven On Their Minds (180 gram pressing – with download) ... LP
My Only Desire (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $12.99 24.99
Unreleased work from the BBC Archives of the 70s – a stunning large group session with a very groovy vibe! Dave Gold isn't as much of a giant as some of the other British leaders of the time – but he's got a wonderful way with the group here, and makes the music move with some of the funky currents that he brought to his work for the KPM Sound Library – where you might know Dave from some key albums! Gold was also working as the leader of the jazzy group on a production of Jesus Christ Superstar – and he has the lineup here take off on a soaring funky version of that show's "Heaven On Their Minds" – a great cut that's worth the price of admission alone, served up with a mix of tenor and flute from Brian Ashe, baritone from Ronnie Ross, electric piano from Cliff Hall, and guitar from John Girvan – amidst a larger group of trumpets, trombones, and alto saxes. Other cuts include the gold originals "O'Connell Street" and "Nostalgia" – both groovy tracks with an MPS big band vibe – plus a version of the Jimmy Webb tune "Pocketful Of Keys".
