Ron GeesinPot-Boilers – Soundtracks To Stephen Dwoskin Films 1966 to 1970 ... LP
Trunk (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $23.99
The great Ron Geesin is a man of many talents – UK studio genius, ace composer, arranger, and more – with ties to worlds that include film music, sound library work, easy listening, and even collaborations with Pink Floyd! The music here is all from films by underground director Stephen Dwoskin – a British filmmaker who was very influenced by the avant film scene in New York – and who, like some of the best of those artists, really saw music as a key component to his overall work! Gavin Bryars later scored some of Dwoskin's 70s efforts – but this set brings together mindblowing music by Geesin – work that, like Ron at his best on other records, is often as experimentally sonic as it is musical – created from elements that are almost impossible to discern, once they get the Geesin touch – and presented here in a long-overdue musical document of five films that have now crumbled to the ashes of time. Selections include "Chinese Checkers", "Alone", "Pot Boiler", "Feet", and "Moment". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousMiniatures 1 & 2 – A Sequence Of Tiny Masterpieces ... CD
Pipe/Cherry Red (UK), 1980. New Copy 2CDs ... $12.99
A great 2CD set – one that brings together two rare installments of this Miniatures series of music, collage, and sound art! First up is the 1979 edition – a really fantastic little record – and one that has a concept that's unlike anything else we can think of! Morgan Fisher presents 51 different "miniatures" – songs that are a minute or less, all stacked up to make a record that's somewhere between the DIY post-punk spirit of the Rough Trade years, and some of the more offbeat, avant work of the electronic/musique concrete generation! The mix of artists is fantastic, and the brevity of the songs means that if there's something you don't like, you'll quickly be in the company of the next song – and Fisher should not only be hailed for the way that he put the whole thing together, but also for the amazing selection of artists – a lineup that includes Kevin Coyne, David Bedford, Fred Frith, Robert Wyatt, John Otway, Quentin Crisp, Michael Nyman, Pete Seeger, David Cunningham, Ron Geesin, Robert Fripp, George Melly, Steve Miller, Lol Coxhill, Neil Innes, Maggie Nicols, Andy Partridge, Stinky Winkles, and many others! CD2 features the installment from the year 2000 – with 61 more pieces, done in a similar spirit, but with a shift in technology – in a lineup that includes contributions from Gavin Bryars, Jan Campion, Robert Fripp, Dissidenten, David Cunningham, Chris Butler, John Paul Jones, Ottmar Liebert, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Trans Global Underground, Jane Siberry, Terry Riley, Hermeto Pascoal, Linton Kwesi Johnson, and many others! ✨✧ VariousLullabies For Catatonics – A Journey Through The British Avant Pop/Art Rock Scene 1967 to 1974 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic little collection – and one that's maybe a lot more fun than you might expect! There's little material that's actually avant, and just a few that might fall into the more boring sides of the art rock spectrum – and instead, the set brings together work from the psych and early prog years by a host of British acts who were really willing to take a chance with their music! There's more than a few big names here, and a few big hits too – but those cuts are mixed with overlooked gems and album tracks that really get at the amazing creative explosion that was happening in British music at the time – a moment when things were sounding so different than just a few years before – but results that were surprisingly groovy and catchy too. As with other box sets on the Grapefruit label, the track selection is superb – and the whole thing comes with song-by-song notes that get at the history and special quality of each number – amidst 79 titles by artists who include Deep Feeling, Open Road, 9:30 Fly, Gnome Street, Matching Mole, Nirvana, Comus, Matching Mole, The Coxhill/Bedford Duo, Spring, The Velvet Frogs, Bachenkel, Third Ear Band, Woody Kern, Genesis, The Riot Squad, Dantalian's Chariot, Mighty Baby, Cressida, Rustic Hinge, Eyes Of Blue, Fuschia, Blonde On Blonde, and Ron Geesin.
