Akerblom & ZengerAkerblom & Zenger – Live At Roma Jazz 2015 ... LP
Jazzaggression, 2015. New Copy ... $19.99
A beautifully spiritual set of duets between bassist Teemu Akerblom and saxophonist Mike Zenger – playing together here without any other instrumentation at all! Akerblom sets things up in a modal mode on most numbers – but mellower, without any piano or drums – and Zenger then blows these long, soulful solos on alto sax and flute – the former with a tone that's often quite deep, with a great deal of feeling. Things get slightly more outside and improvised as the set moves on – a shift that gives the whole thing a bit of a loft jazz vibe – and titles include "Peaceful Mornings", "So One Has To Go", "Abstract Blues & The Truth", "Frozen Land", and "Aurajoen Rannoilla". Yasuhiro KounoRoma In The Rain ... CD
Aketa's Disk/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... $24.99
Pianist Yasuhiro Kouno has a really special guest on this record – vibist Masahiro Kanno, who's presence on the record makes the whole thing ring out with a really fantastic sense of joy and life! The vibes often lead the tunes, ringing out strongly next to the piano – and with a lyrical, soulful vibe that's a lot more like the combination of Jack Wilson and Roy Ayers than some of the sleeper vibes/piano modes inspired by Milt Jackson and John Lewis – a quality that's also echoed by the rhythms of the record, which flow nicely from the bass of Terumichi Yamada and drums of Hironobu Fujisawa. All tracks are original, and filled with beautiful tones – titles that include "For B's Smile", "Waltz For Baby", "Roma In The Rain", and "Dancing Dolls". CD

A tasty collection of cuts from Italian 70s police thrillers – written and performed by the likes of Goblin, Stelvio Cipriani, Paolo Vasile, and Franco Bixio. Most of the cuts are lifted from soundtracks that have been reissued on Cinevox on CD – and the overall groove is a mix of guitars, keyboards, and lots of tight funky riffing – the kind of sounds you'd expect to hear behind a fashionable cop in 70s Rome! Titles include "Mark Il Poliziotto", "La Polizia Ha Le Mani Legate", "La Via Della Droga", "Controrapina", "Vai Gorilla", "Trumpet's Flight", "A Pugni Nudi", "Il Giorno Del Cobra", and "Notturno". 13 tracks in all! Argo, 1963. Very Good ... $2.99
Ramsey and the classic trio with Eldee Young and Red Holt – grooving away on a pot luck batch of tunes that includes material from a wide wide variety of sources, all turned into soul jazz magic by the boys! Believe it or not, Ramsey takes tunes like "Andaluza", "Arrividerci Roma", "Loch Lomond", "Nature Boy", and "Sheandoah", and arranges them with a hiply swinging style that makes you forget what they ever sounded like in the first place. Throw in some originals – like "We Blue It Again", "Look A Here", and "Swamp Girl" – and you've got pretty nice batch of tracks! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousAmarcord Nino Rota ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1981. New Copy ... $12.99
One of the first true moments of genius from producer Hal Willner – the man who helped open up so many ears to diverse music with projects like these! The album's a tribute to the music of Nino Rota, as used in the films of Federico Fellini – but rather than just be a slavish remake, the set instead has a set of ultra-hip jazz musicians providing their own interpretations of Rota compositions – in a range of formats that's completely breathtaking, and which takes these sublime melodies and transforms them even past their use in the films! The set features fantastic Jaki Byard solo performances of "Amarcord" and "La Strada", solo vibes from Dave Samuels on "La Dolce Vita/Juliet Of The Spirits", the Clarla Bley Big Band performing "8 1/2", solo soprano sax and gong from Steve Lacy on "Roma", David Amram playing "Satyricon", solo Bill Frisell guitar on "Juliet Of The Spirits", a great "La Dolce Vita Suite", with passages by Muhal Richard Abrams and Sharon Freeman, and even a medley of "The White Sheik/I Vitelloni/Il Bidone/Nights Of Cabiria" by arranger William S Fischer with Branford Marsalis and George Adams on saxes, Wynton Marsalis on trumpet, and Kenny Barron on piano. ✨✧ Dennis FarnonArrivederci, Baby ... LP
RCA, 1966. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A groovy soundtrack to a very campy 60s film that starred Tony Curtis and Zsa Zsa Gabor! The score leads off with a groovy vocal track, "Love Me Longer", which is sung by Vic Damone, and which is very much in that tight throwaway pop style that often showed up in title themes of films like this ("Buena Sera, Mrs. Campbell" is just another example of the sort of track we're talking about.) Lots of the cuts have sort of a light sprightly orchestral sound, with lots of sharp edges, and goofy scoring bits designed to accompany the campier moments in the plot. Farnon's jazz background brings in some nice jazzier touches at other moments, and you will hear the occasional lusty tenor or groovy organ bit. Titles include "Reel Italiano", "Benvenuto A Roma", "At The Cafe Valbonne", "Ballet Of The Bombs", "Highballs At Villa Rienza", "The Last Kiss", and "See Naples & Live". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Marcos ValleSempre ... LP
Far Out (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Wonderfully groovy work from Marcos Valle – one of the artists who first inspired us to start a record store many years ago! Marcos is back, and in very soulful formation – working here in a mode that recalls some of his fantastic soul-based sounds in the early 80s – including his great collaborations with the legendary Leon Ware! The tunes are upbeat and funky, but still have all the personal warmth that Valle brings to his music – a special blend that few folks could ever touch, even back in the day – and which, all these many years later, reminds us just how distinct the music of Marcos has always been. Valle sings and plays plenty of great keyboards – and the whole thing was produced and arranged by Daniel Maunick, a perfect partner in crime for Marcos. Titles include "Minha Roma", "Olha Quem Ta Chengado", "Sempre", "Sitancia", "Vou Amanha Saber", "Odisseia", and "Alma". LP, Vinyl record album

Roman AndrenJuanita & Beyond – Live Studio Sessions ... CD
Ajabu/P-Vine (Japan), 2008. Used ... $11.99
Incredible work from Roman Andren – a genre-defying set that's filled with warmth, soul, and imagination – all recorded live in the studio with a really organic feel! The music's a cross between a few different jazz, Afro, and Latin modes – played by a group that features Roman on Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano, with tenor, flute, trumpet, guitar, and some especially great rhythms – lively percussion that brings a bit of a Latin or Brazilian flavor to the music at points, and pushes the set with some great club jazz energy. There's a bit of vocals on the record too – sung by Susanne Ottebring or Miriam Aida – and Fredrik Kronkvist also plays a bit of guest alto sax too. The whole thing's wonderful – a warmly seductive album that really grabs us from the get-go – filled with wonderful tunes that include "Long Ago & Far Far Away", "Felaflight", "Nawana", "Bumblebee", "Let's Live Forever Love", "It's Nice", and "O Mundo E Seu". A beautiful love letter to their adapted home of America – from harmonicist Gregorie Maret and pianist Romain Collin – joined here by some perfect work from Bill Frisell on guitar, as the leaders' ideas really resonate with some of Frisell's projects in recent years! Clarence Penn plays drums on the session, but the core energy is spun out between the harmonica, guitar, and piano – and Frisell also sifts a bit into banjo in spots, while Collin adds in pump organ, effects, and a Moog Taurus too. The tunes very much live up to the promise of the title – and tracks include "The Sail", "Back Home", "San Luis Obispo", "Small Town", "Still", and a version of "Wichita Lineman". CD

Schema (Italy), 1997. Used ... $14.99
A great groover from Italian pianist Romano Mussolini – a really cool little session that features some key instrumental elements joining his core trio sound! Romano's at the helm on acoustic piano, with support on bass and drums – but the set also features guest guitar, tenor, and added percussion – all of which expand the sound out nicely! There's bits of bossa and Latin jazz percolating throughout the first side of the record – making for a nice change from the usual Mussolini groove – and side two uses the same elements to move into more boppish territory overall, but still with an upbeat and swinging style. Romano's keyboard work is as fluid as ever – and titles include "Versiliana Samba", "Meditation", "Thomas Blues", "Drop Me Off At Harlem", "Confirmation", and "Perdido". CD also features 2 bonus tracks from a Romano Mussolini Quartet – "Foglie Morte" and "Night In Tunisia". CD

An obscure funky fusion album from bassist Tony Newton – with a wild look that grabs you instantly! Tony plays this weird double-bass, and he's pictured with the instrument on the cover – looking like some super-heavy righteous dude that escaped from The Headhunters. The record features loads of spiraling bass solos, laid out over hard funky drums and keyboards. There's not a lot of breakbeats, but the record's got some nice hard fusion with tight changes and strong grooves. Funky tracks include "Groundshaker" and "Supernatural Rebirth" – and other titles include "BC 2 Chant", "Spread A Little Goodness", and "The Devil Walks Among Us". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Oscar PetersonOscar Peterson Collection (In A Romantic Mood/Swinging Brass With The Oscar Peterson Trio) ... LP
Verve, 1955. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold. ... Just Sold Out!
2 classic albums from Oscar Peterson – packaged together in one 70s collection! First up is In a Romantic Mood – a rare "with strings" date! We love Oscar Peterson with strings – a setting he never got to use that often, given the popularity of his famous trio recordings! When Oscar gets set up with strings, he seems to play even more freely than with a combo – let loose from rhythm a bit more than before, and instead focusing strongly on melody – which often comes off with a warmly lyrical feel. This album's a rare entry into the Peterson strings category – a great 50s date with Russ Garcia backing Oscar up – giving the album just the right mix of mellow and modern to match Peterson's magical work on the keys! In a way, the album's a link between two different styles of 50s jazz – some of the warmer string-laden work of the piano mainstream, and some of the sharper sounds of the Verve modern approach to the style – served up here by Oscar in ways that bring both modes together perfectly, with just the right dash of both. Titles include "Laura" and "Tenderly" – both tracks you'd have to have on an album like this – plus "Black Coffee", "Ruby", "Stella By Starlight", "A Sunday Kind Of Love", and "I Thought About You". Next is another unusual set – Swinging Brass With The Oscar Peterson Trio – one of Peterson's few albums with a larger group – featuring some great arrangements from Russ Garcia! Titles include "Blues For Big Scotia", "Con Alma", "Cubano Chant", "OP", and "Little Pea's Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

An amazing little soundtrack that's every bit as groovy as its cover – a great blend of 60s mod and Italian jazz, all in support of the skeleton-costumed master thief Kriminal! This CD represents the first full length presentation of the film's soundtrack – a long-overdue masterpiece that steps off the jazzier modes used in Italian films of the early 60s, touched by some of the more dynamic production and arrangement styles that were creeping in later in the decade – all served up over short, sweet tracks that dance with delight and drama throughout! There's even a bit of the British and American spy modes of the time creeping into the mix – no doubt a way of highlighting the "international crime" reputation of lead character Kriminal. CD features a total of 29 tracks in all, with notes in both English and Italian! CD

One of the hardest-jamming Return To Forever albums – recorded with the post-Brazilian lineup that includes Chick Corea on keyboards, Stanley Clarke on bass, Lenny White on percussion, and Al DiMeola on guitars. Corea's very firmly in the lead – stretching out in heavy keyboard romps that really take off into space – propelled by fierce drums from White, heavy bass from Clarke, and a bit of tippling guitar from DiMeola. We kind of miss the subtlety of Airto's percussion, and the beautiful vocals of Flora – but the overall sound's still pretty wonderful and we do like the spaced-out keyboard touches! ✨✧ Dom Um RomaoDom Um Romao ... LP
Muse, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
An unbelievably fantastic album, and perhaps the greatest one that Dom Um Romao ever cut! Dom recorded this set in America with a blend of Brazilian and New York musicians – creating an incredible sound that's unlike anything else we can think of – a rich harmony of Brazilian roots and more creative 70s electric instrumentation – filled with complicated shades, tones, and colors! We'd place this record next to the best electric work by David Axelrod, the dopest funk on CTI, and a rare few other jazz funk albums from the 70s – and the whole thing's completely sublime all the way through! Players include Joao Donato on piano, Dom Salvador on Fender Rhodes, Lloyd McNeil on flute, Mauricio Smith on tenor and soprano sax, Sivuca on organ and guitar, and Joe Beck on electric guitar – and titles include the spare spacey groover "Dom's Tune", the lively dancer "Cinnamon Flower", the jazzy "Family Talk", a great version of "Ponteio", and a take on Sivuca's "Adeus Maria Fulo". Arista/Cherry Pop (UK), 1980s. New Copy ... $12.99
Dancer and pop soul sensation Jermaine Stewart's bright, thumping and 80s dancefoor R&B that busted out huge on the pop charts for a moment! Jermaine was a dancer on Soul Train and background singer before busting out with some catchy R&B hits and the massive pop smash "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off". It's a fun record, and it's interesting to listen to the very 80s sound all these later, after its time in the dark outdated pop shadows, before it became a celebrated influence of the hippest post millennium DJs. Cultural chin-scratching aside, it's a straight up catchy, appealing album from a very talented Jermaine Stewart. Titles include the huge 80s emblem "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off" plus "Dance Floor", "Jody", "Versatile", "Frantic Romantic", "Don't Ever Leave Me", "Out To Punish", "Give Your Love To Me" and "The Word Is Out". This UK CD on Cherry Pop has 5 bonus tracks: "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off (Special Extended Version)", "Brilliance", "The Word Is Out (West Mix – Extended Mix)", "Jody (Dance Version)" and "Dance Floor (Extended Version)". Hiromasa SuzukiPrimrose ... LP
Union/Le Tres Jazz Club (France), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Warm and wonderful work from pianist Hiromasa Suzuki – a real leading light in the Japanese trio scene of the 70s! The album's got a really wonderful vibe throughout – modes initially informed by a bit of Bill Evans, and maybe some Tommy Flanagan too – recorded with warm tones and a nice sort of sparkle – yet never in a commercial way, just with that clear, clean sound that makes so many Japanese trio dates from this time so great. Suzuki takes off nicely on some tunes, but never goes too far outside – and a few others have a slightly straighter feel – showing his balanced emotion on the keys, as well as his strong compositional abilities, as all tunes here appear to be originals. The trio features Nobuyoshi Ino on bass and Steve Jackson on drums – the latter of whom is especially nice – and titles include "Hornet", "Primrose", "Dis-Charge", "Pincer Attack", "Early Summer", and "Knick Knacks". Soul Note (Italy), 1986. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful session of world jazz – recorded in the 80s, but with a sound that reminds us of some of the best MPS experiments in this mode from the 60s! The range of sounds here is really wide – elements of Indian, Brazilian, and Caribbean music mixed with a European approach to jazz – spun out over four long tracks with a really complicated sort of sound. Instrumentation includes sarod from Vikash Maharaj, tabla from Pandit Prakash Maharaj, steel drums from Rudy Smith, percussion from Dom Um Romao, bandoneon from Luis Di Matteo, vibes from Tom Van Der Geld, bass from David Friesen, and drums from Andrew Cyrille – plus horn work from Conrad Bauer on trombone, and both Lennart Aberg and Bernd Konrad on a range of saxes. Titles include "Fire Fly", "Hinglaj", "To Hear The World In A Grain Of Sand", and "Six Rivers". LP, Vinyl record album

Sunnyside, 2018. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An album of nervous rhythms and angular edges – and a set that seems to make the most of the tonal interplay between the alto of Roman Filiu, the tenor of Dayna Stephens, and trumpet of Ralph Alessi – all painted in these nicely dark colors by the piano of David Virelles! The album finds ways to swing that are quite unconventional – often building up the rhythms in blocks of sound that come as much from the horns as they do from the drums of Craig Weinrib, bass of Matt Brewer, and percussion of Yusnier Sanchez – on a set of Filiu compositions that include "Harina Con Arena", "Choiral", "Danza #5", "Fulcanelli", "Grass", "Imperator", and "For Horns & Bells". Pony Canyon (Japan), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A seminal bit of Japanese rock from the early 70s – performed by a group that included Harumi Hosono, and who has a style that borrows from the best of the LA scene of the late 60s! The tunes are extremely catchy – done in a folksy style that has compressed guitars and spacious production that evoke bits of The Byrds, Graham Parsons, Beau Brummels, late Association, and some of our other favorite work from those magical years. Lyrics are all in Japanese, but sung in a simple and compelling style that somehow makes you forget that fact! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousNikkatsu Roman Porn No Sekai ... CD
Ultra Vybe (Japan), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Japanese porno grooves from the mid 70s – served up in a range of styles that are quite different than their American or European counterparts! There's definitely a "sexy" feel to the music here – one that sometimes comes through with conventional electric funk riffing – but the overall quality of the work is much broader, and often features fuzzy guitar, trippy instrumentation, or other bits that come across as a bit more abrasive than anything you might hear in American porn! And even when things are sweeter and softer, there's still a bit of an edge – a kind of tonal quality to some of these tunes that might be more at home in horror than anything else – even when there's a more straightforward groove going on. Not that we mind, mind you – because the array of styles makes this one way more than just the usual porno groove collection – another incredible entry in the Nikkatsu soundtrack series from Ultra Vybe! Notes and titles are all in Japanese – but we can tell you that the package has some very crazy images. CD

✨✧ Dick FarneyPenumbra Romance ... CD
EMI/Odeon (Brazil), 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful album from this legendary Brazilian singer – and probably one of his best-ever! Farney began his career as a warm romantic vocalist in earlier pop years, but on this great set, he's emerging as a talented jazz singer, on a level with Leny Andrade or Elis Regina. The instrumentation's only a piano trio, and Farney's work on the keys fits perfectly with his moody vocals on tracks like "Este Seu Olhar", "Marina", "Ponto Final", "Uma Loira", and "Perdido De Amor". Four Flies (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
"Properly" has these really fast drums right from the start – maybe electronic, maybe not – although the rest of the groove has a sweet electric vibe – kind of moogy elements that move up and down the scale to match the funkiness of the tune, cut up by a nice bit of funky guitar! There's lots more guitar on the flipside – as "Acromatic" almost feels like an Italian sound library copy of some Meters instrumental – from the funky bassline, to the timing of the groove, to the nicely scratchy guitar! 7-inch, Vinyl record

John Abercrombie/Marc Johnson/Peter ErskineJohn Abercrombie/Marc Johnson/Peter Erskine ... LP
ECM (Germany), 1989. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A nicely varied live set from this trio of key ECM players of the 80s – captured here with the same sense of sound as some of their studio recordings – which must have been something amazing to hear in person! Abercrombie's still very chromatic at this point in his career – playing fluid, colorful lines on guitar – but also using occasional guitar synthesizer passages too – more waves of sound than individual lines, which sounds especially nice next to more driving drums from Peter Erskine! Marc Johnson's ear for space is perfectly tuned for the proceedings – working at a level that's far beyond standard bassmanship – and titles include "Light Beam", "Drum Solo", "Four On One", "Samurai Hee Haw", "Furs On Ice", "Stella By Starlight", and "Innerplay". Cannonball Adderley with Bossa Rio SextetCannonball's Bossa Nova ... CD
Capitol/Riverside, 1962. Used ... $6.99
Cannonball Adderley recorded this nice little groover in 1962, when American musicans were just getting on the bossa tip, and still keeping things pretty authentic. The record was cut in New York with Sergio Mendes' early Bossa Rio group – the legendary Brazilian jazz ensemble that featured Paulo Moura, Dom Um Romao, and Durval Ferreira. The mixture of tight bossa rhythms and Cannon's soulful sax is totally great – and it's only because the Riverside label was folding at the time that the record never got bigger fame. It's here now, though, and the record's a real treat – especially at this price! Includes the cuts "Joyce's Samba", "Clouds", "Minha Saudade", "Corcovado", "Batida Diferentes", and "Sambops". Plus, the CD also features bonus single versions of "Corcovado" and "Clouds"! CD

Airto/DeodatoFingers/Airto & Deodato In Concert ... CD
CTI/Vocalion (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $19.99
CTI Records meets that Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s – served up here on two classic albums! Fingers is one of Airto's greatest records ever – a really hard hitting batch of tracks that mix sharp-edged fusion lines with some earthier Brazilian percussion touches – all in a way that nicely steps off of Airto's first few American releases, and warms the groove up with a nice dose of California soul! Flora Purim joins in here on both vocals and percussion – and the rest of the group features Hugo Fattoruso on keyboards and harmonica, Jorgte Fattoruso on drums, and David Amaro on both electric and acoustic guitars – shifting nicely between both instruments in a way that further underscores the blended vibe of the record! Most of these tracks are Airto classics – like "Tombo in 7/4", "San Francisco River", "Romance Of Death", "Ringers", and "Wind Chant" – and the record has a very sweet CTI production style, but is still rough enough around the edges to keep things nice and real! Deodato In Concert is an excellent little live set from Deodato – hard to believe because the sound's just as tight and funky as his studio albums, and possibly even more interesting because he manages to pull it off equally well in a live setting! The record features percussion by Airto, guitar by John Tropea, and vocals by Flora Purim – and those are just the marquee names of a large and amazing grew of great musicians! All tracks are long and complicated, for very hynotic feel throughout. The funkiest number is "Tropea", which has a nice long 8 minute groove – and the set also features a cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again", plus the tracks "Parana", "Branches", "Baubles, Bangles And Beads" and "Skyscraper". Amazing! CD

Atomic/School DaysDistil ... CD
Okka Disk, 2008. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... $10.99 16.99
An explosive meeting between Atomic and Ken Vandermark's School Days combo – proof that the Chicago/Scandinavia connection is stronger than ever! The double-length performance was recorded at Chicago's Green Mill nightclub, and it features an impressive lineup with Ken Vandermark on baritone sax and bass clarinet, Havard Wiik on piano, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Magnus Broo on trumpet, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, Fredrik Ljungkvist on tenor, Kjell Nordeson on vibes, and Paal Nilssen-Love – all working on very long, open tracks that almost have the feel of some of the best improvising orchestra work from years back. The vibes add a nicely chromatic quality to the work amidst some of the fiercer horn passages – and titles include "Deadline", "Irrational Ceremony", "Visitors", "Andersonville", "Dark Easter", "Fort Funston", "Bunuel At The Cocktail Party", and "Closing Stages".
