Akerblom & ZengerAkerblom & Zenger – Live At Roma Jazz 2015 ... LP
Jazzaggression, 2015. New Copy ... $19.99
A beautifully spiritual set of duets between bassist Teemu Akerblom and saxophonist Mike Zenger – playing together here without any other instrumentation at all! Akerblom sets things up in a modal mode on most numbers – but mellower, without any piano or drums – and Zenger then blows these long, soulful solos on alto sax and flute – the former with a tone that's often quite deep, with a great deal of feeling. Things get slightly more outside and improvised as the set moves on – a shift that gives the whole thing a bit of a loft jazz vibe – and titles include "Peaceful Mornings", "So One Has To Go", "Abstract Blues & The Truth", "Frozen Land", and "Aurajoen Rannoilla". LP, Vinyl record album
(Numbered limited edition of 250!)

✨✧ Yasuhiro KounoRoma In The Rain ... CD
Aketa's Disk/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pianist Yasuhiro Kouno has a really special guest on this record – vibist Masahiro Kanno, who's presence on the record makes the whole thing ring out with a really fantastic sense of joy and life! The vibes often lead the tunes, ringing out strongly next to the piano – and with a lyrical, soulful vibe that's a lot more like the combination of Jack Wilson and Roy Ayers than some of the sleeper vibes/piano modes inspired by Milt Jackson and John Lewis – a quality that's also echoed by the rhythms of the record, which flow nicely from the bass of Terumichi Yamada and drums of Hironobu Fujisawa. All tracks are original, and filled with beautiful tones – titles that include "For B's Smile", "Waltz For Baby", "Roma In The Rain", and "Dancing Dolls". CD

✨✧ Enrico Rava & Joe LovanoRoma ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful pairing of two very distinct jazz talents – trumpeter Enrico Rava and tenorist Joe Lovano – each masters of phrasing, but in very different ways – working here together in a relaxed live setting that really lets them shine! The set was recorded in Rome, with open tracks that have a different feel than they would if ECM had captured the duo in the studio – and support is from a very thoughtful, sensitive trio that features Giovanni Guidi on piano, Dezron Douglas on bass, and Gerald Cleaver on drums – two rhythm players who keep things soulful, but in subtle ways – and a pianist who can punctuate the solos wonderfully, and really keep them moving along. Titles include "Secrets", "Interiors", "Divine Timing", "Spiritual", and "Drum Song". CD

Great Konitz work recorded in Italy – definitely in that "cut above" mode you get with the Horo label! The group features Dave Cliff on guitar, Peter Ind on bass, Al Levitt on drums – and the set features a mix of tunes by Konitz, Tristano, Wayne Marsh, and others. Tracks include "Roma Today", "317 E 32nd Street", "Mimiche", "Background Music", "Blues For Sinesio", "Fools Rush In", "Feather Bed", and "Cerri Three". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Arthur LymanYellow Bird ... LP
Hi Fi, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Sweet exotic sounds from the Arthur Lyman group – heavy on vibes and lots of hip percussion – recorded with a gently swaying feel that recalls the best energy of the Hawaiian scene in the postwar years! The set's one of Lyman's early solo dates – recorded Henry Kaiser Aluminum Dome in Hawaii – which you can almost hear in the way the sounds here resonate, and hang sweetly in air. The tunes are pretty mellow, but in a good way – more sonically sensitive than some more gimmicky, sound effect-heavy exotica – and titles include "Adventures in Paradise", "Andalusia", "Yellow Bird", "Arrivederci Roma", "Sweet & Lovely", "Bamboo Taboo", "Granada", and "Ravel's Bolero". Fire up that console stereo and break out the Tiki glasses! LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1962. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A 3-part soundtrack to this 3-part film that features different segments by Fellini, Visconti, and De Sica. The mode is Italian sex comedy – and the styles used here by Trovajoli and Rota are groovy and whimsical – occasionally touched with jazz or jerk/beat modes, but more in the ornate humoresque mode of early 60s Italian scores. Titles in clude "Riffa Cha Cha", "Twist Della Balera", "Soldi Soldi Soldi", "A Spasso Per Roma", and "Slow Di Pupe". LP, Vinyl record album

Giuliano SorginiZoo Folle/Gli Animali Che Simpatia ... CD
Quartet (Spain), 1974. New Copy ... $24.99
A pair of great soundtracks – back to back on a single CD! First up is Zoo Folle – an incredible lost jazz funk soundtrack by Guiliano Sorgini – one of the best we've been lucky enough to discover in ages – all the more fascinating given the film it was made for! The soundtrack is a wild one for the most part, with a few more elegiac sounding numbers – but weighted heavily overall with feverish percussion, Hammond, Moog and other keys and synths – along with funky flute and bass on the wilder numbers, and more elegant classical guitar and strings on the more meditative ones. It's a fascinating mix of styles considering the subject – a mid 70s documentary expose on the poor conditions suffered by animals in zoos and circuses, made by Riccardo Fellini, the brother cinema legend Federico. Titles include "Mad Town", "Ultima Caccia", "Ambroseli", "Space And Freedom", "Zoo Folle", "Chains", "Red Old Skies", "Slaves", and "Roma Londra Parigi". Gli Animali Che Simpatia is an animal-themed film, scored by Giuliano Sorgini with a set of tracks that are mostly named after different animals in the film – and which seem to have a very different quality as the soundtrack moves from number to number! Sometimes are upbeat and groovy, others more serious and almost melancholy – and titles include "Baboons", "Puppies", "Bears", "Eagles", "Antelopes", "Dolphins", and "Ostrich". CD

Cinevox (Italy), 2018. Used ... $6.99
A pretty cool contemporary group – one who are lucky enough to record for the legendary Cinevox soundtrack label, and who have a sound that definitely matches the vibe of that company's long legacy of music! The style here is very cinematic at times – with some slinky, groovy moments that feel like they're lifted right from 60s or 70s Italian film scores – but there's also a fair bit of vocals, too – lyrics that kind of slide in and out of the music in a nice way, again almost like a vocal tune on a cinematic outing – although a few even feel like some of our favorite British indie work of the early 80s.. Titles include "Cinema Roma", "Love Premiere", "Home Again", "Andromeda", "Berlin", "Stelvio FM", "Dedicato A Una Stella", and "Dust & Flowers". Also includes the bonus tracks "Stelvio (Quei Giorni Insieme)" and "Home Again (vocoder mix)". CD

Far Out (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $13.99
Wonderfully groovy work from Marcos Valle – one of the artists who first inspired us to start a record store many years ago! Marcos is back, and in very soulful formation – working here in a mode that recalls some of his fantastic soul-based sounds in the early 80s – including his great collaborations with the legendary Leon Ware! The tunes are upbeat and funky, but still have all the personal warmth that Valle brings to his music – a special blend that few folks could ever touch, even back in the day – and which, all these many years later, reminds us just how distinct the music of Marcos has always been. Valle sings and plays plenty of great keyboards – and the whole thing was produced and arranged by Daniel Maunick, a perfect partner in crime for Marcos. Titles include "Minha Roma", "Olha Quem Ta Chengado", "Sempre", "Sitancia", "Vou Amanha Saber", "Odisseia", and "Alma". CD

Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1981. New Copy ... $12.99
One of the first true moments of genius from producer Hal Willner – the man who helped open up so many ears to diverse music with projects like these! The album's a tribute to the music of Nino Rota, as used in the films of Federico Fellini – but rather than just be a slavish remake, the set instead has a set of ultra-hip jazz musicians providing their own interpretations of Rota compositions – in a range of formats that's completely breathtaking, and which takes these sublime melodies and transforms them even past their use in the films! The set features fantastic Jaki Byard solo performances of "Amarcord" and "La Strada", solo vibes from Dave Samuels on "La Dolce Vita/Juliet Of The Spirits", the Clarla Bley Big Band performing "8 1/2", solo soprano sax and gong from Steve Lacy on "Roma", David Amram playing "Satyricon", solo Bill Frisell guitar on "Juliet Of The Spirits", a great "La Dolce Vita Suite", with passages by Muhal Richard Abrams and Sharon Freeman, and even a medley of "The White Sheik/I Vitelloni/Il Bidone/Nights Of Cabiria" by arranger William S Fischer with Branford Marsalis and George Adams on saxes, Wynton Marsalis on trumpet, and Kenny Barron on piano. TCB (Switzerland), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $4.99 15.99
A special set of work from the Swiss Radio Days series – a great run of titles that usually features American and European artists recorded live by Swiss Radio – but which this time around features a distinct lineup of all-Swiss soloists, as a really great showcase of that nation's overlooked jazz talents! The set begins with sparkling trumpet lines from Franco Ambrosetti – really stretching out on long tracks that feature support from the Jazz Live Trio of Klaus Koening on piano, Peter Frei on bass, and Peter Schmidlin on drums – on titles that include the original "For Flying Out Proud", and the long "Things We Did Last Summer". Next is a twin-tenor lineup – both Andy Scherrer and Roman Schwaller, blowing on two Schwaller originals – "First Step" and "Ballad For Mal" – both of which have a nicely sharp edge! Next, trumpeter Hans Kennel and tenorist Thomas Grunwald join the Jazz Live Trio – on "Groove Gogam Groove" and "Zumurrud", taken together in one long version. Last up, alto saxophonist Daniel Bourquin joins the trio, which features drums from Pierre Favre instead of Schmidlin – on the originals "Oben Ohne" and "Unten Ohne". CD

Dom recorded this one in America with a blend of Brazilian and New York musicians – creating an incredible sound that's unlike anything else we can think of! We'd place this record next to the best electric work by David Axelrod, the dopest funk on CTI, and a rare few other jazz funk albums from the 70s – and the whole thing's completely sublime all the way through! Includes the spare spacey groover "Dom's Tune", the lively dancer "Cinnamon Flower", the jazzy "Family Talk", a great version of "Ponteio", and a take on Sivuca's "Adeus Maria Fulo" with Joao Donato on electric harpsichord! Hiromasa SuzukiPrimrose ... LP
Union/Le Tres Jazz Club (France), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Warm and wonderful work from pianist Hiromasa Suzuki – a real leading light in the Japanese trio scene of the 70s! The album's got a really wonderful vibe throughout – modes initially informed by a bit of Bill Evans, and maybe some Tommy Flanagan too – recorded with warm tones and a nice sort of sparkle – yet never in a commercial way, just with that clear, clean sound that makes so many Japanese trio dates from this time so great. Suzuki takes off nicely on some tunes, but never goes too far outside – and a few others have a slightly straighter feel – showing his balanced emotion on the keys, as well as his strong compositional abilities, as all tunes here appear to be originals. The trio features Nobuyoshi Ino on bass and Steve Jackson on drums – the latter of whom is especially nice – and titles include "Hornet", "Primrose", "Dis-Charge", "Pincer Attack", "Early Summer", and "Knick Knacks". VariousDoo Wop Soda Shop – Atmospheric & Romantic Harmony Sounds From The 50s & 60s ... CD
Croydon Municipal (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $3.99 13.99
A really unique set of doo wop tracks from the classic years – one that has a slightly different format than some of the others on the market, as you might guess from the cover! These tunes are definitely sweet, but never too pop overall – and the titles all come from an extremely well-chosen batch of singles from a variety of labels and scenes – all to portray that special heartbreaking sound of early group soul – the sort that might well have been the biggest contribution that doo wop made to the legacy of harmony. The cuts on the set often have a slow-stepping, late nite feel – a moody vibe that often tells the tale of love found and love lost, but with vocal inflections that make each of these numbers a special standout on their own. There's 24 whopping tracks in all – with great sound, label scans, and titles that include "Remember" by Dennis & The Explorers, "Looking For You" by The Dukes, "For Your Love" by The Wanderers, "Along My Lonely Way" by The Utopians, "This Paradise" by The Bel-Aires, "Last Night I Dreamed" by The Fiestas, "The Night Is Quiet" by The Vocaleers, "Be Mine" by The Uptones, "Lonely One" by The Ravels, "Baby Be Mine" by The Melo Gents, and "Flames" by The Reminiscents. Buddah, 1976. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A warmly romantic journey from the stellar Norman Connors – but a set that's also got a fair bit of spiritual jazz undercurrents too! Norman's at that perfect Starship point in his career – giving equal space to the vocals and instrumental passages on the record – at a level that perfectly sums up his unique, sophisticated blend of jazz and soul! The sublime Eleanor Mills sings on some key cuts – a singer we love from her earlier New Jersey soul sides – and Prince Phillip Mitchell handles the male leads, with a level of class that even goes beyond his own records. Reeds are handled by Gary Bartz and Pharoah Sanders – both players who bring in a nice sort of depth to the record – and Sanders really sparkles on a remake of his classic "Thembi", taken in a mellow stepping tone, as well as a reading of Gato Barbieri's "Last Tango In Paris". The whole album's wonderful – and other titles include "Once I've Been There", "Romantic Journey", "Destination Moon", "For You Everything", and "You Are Everything". LP, Vinyl record album

A surprisingly compelling album from Michelle Phillips – recorded years after the breakup of The Mamas & The Papas – with a smooth late 70s LA sound that works perfectly for her more mature sexy approach! Jack Nitzsche handled the production and arrangements on most of it, and the album's got more of an edge than you might think from first look or listen – slightly self-reflexive, and less a comeback attempt than an expression of identity finally put on record. Wonderful! Titles include "Aching Kind", "Trashy Rumors", "Let The Music Begin", "Victim Of Romance", "Where's Mine", "Just One Look", "Paid The Price", "Lady Of Fantasy" (the lone track here produced & arranged by John Phillips) and more LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ruby & The RomanticsUltimate Collection Of Ruby & The Romantics ... CD
Marginal, 1960s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from one of the 60s greatest harmony groups ever! Ruby Nash leads a quartet of guys, who do a wonderful job backing up her sweetly soulful vocals – running through a mixture of original songs with a deeply soulful edge, plus a few covers, which the group brings into whole new territory, co-opting them with that same subtle power the group expressed in their first big hit "Our Day Will Come". That gem is included here – along with 29 other tracks, making the package one of the best-ever CD compilations of Ruby's fantastic work! Titles include "The End Of The World", "I'm Afraid", "Day Dreaming", "Two Different Worlds", "I'm Sorry", "Hey There Lonely Boy", "Young Wings Can Fly", "Chances Are", "We'll Meet Again", "Our Everlasting Love", "Dream", and "By The Way". ✨✧ Stanley BlackChristmas Holiday For Romance ... CD
Decca/Real Gone, 1954. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A classic Christmas album of makeout music from British bandleader Stanley Black! It's clear that the guy on the cover has his mind on a lot more than what's under the tree – and after pouring some bubbly, and treating his lady to some diamonds, he's ready to put on the moves – either that, or he's somehow got his teeth stuck in her hair! Regardless of the setting, though, Stanley Black serves up some nicely mellow music for the later hours of Christmas Eve – string-laden readings of Holiday tunes, done up in a nice mix of familiar and original tunes – with titles that include "Dreaming", "Christmas Island", "Santo Natale", "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", "Christmas Alphabet", and "By The Fireside". One of the coolest, grooviest Christmas records we've heard in years – a set that's the first-ever effort from Roman Coppola's Molto Groovy Productions – and which has a mod 60s vibe all the way through! The styles here are steeped in the best Italian soundtrack modes from years back – cool keyboards, fuzzy organ, funky basslines, and lots of offbeat instrumentation that really transforms the tunes – almost as if someone like Piero Umiliani or Ennio Morricone recorded a whole album of Christmas instrumentals! The sound is perfect – even better than you might suspect from the cover – and you can take it from us, as we're not easily fooled by "fake" retro projects – and really tip our hat to these guys for getting the instrumentation, arrangements, and production just right. Most titles are familiar songs, but done in very unusual styles – and tracks include "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", "Joy To The World", "Jingle Bells", "Sleigh Ride", "Feliz Navidad", "Little Drummer Boy", "Silver Bells", and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas". CBS, 1976. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the hardest-jamming Return To Forever albums – recorded with the post-Brazilian lineup that includes Chick Corea on keyboards, Stanley Clarke on bass, Lenny White on percussion, and Al DiMeola on guitars. Corea's very firmly in the lead – stretching out in heavy keyboard romps that really take off into space – propelled by fierce drums from White, heavy bass from Clarke, and a bit of tippling guitar from DiMeola. We kind of miss the subtlety of Airto's percussion, and the beautiful vocals of Flora – but the overall sound's still pretty wonderful and we do like the spaced-out keyboard touches! An unbelievably fantastic album, and perhaps the greatest one that Dom Um Romao ever cut! Dom recorded this set in America with a blend of Brazilian and New York musicians – creating an incredible sound that's unlike anything else we can think of – a rich harmony of Brazilian roots and more creative 70s electric instrumentation – filled with complicated shades, tones, and colors! We'd place this record next to the best electric work by David Axelrod, the dopest funk on CTI, and a rare few other jazz funk albums from the 70s – and the whole thing's completely sublime all the way through! Players include Joao Donato on piano, Dom Salvador on Fender Rhodes, Lloyd McNeil on flute, Mauricio Smith on tenor and soprano sax, Sivuca on organ and guitar, and Joe Beck on electric guitar – and titles include the spare spacey groover "Dom's Tune", the lively dancer "Cinnamon Flower", the jazzy "Family Talk", a great version of "Ponteio", and a take on Sivuca's "Adeus Maria Fulo". Loads of great keyboards here from Hiromasa Suzuki – working in a mode that's somewhere between earlier funky jazz, and the tighter Japanese fusion of the late 70s! The style here is never too smooth, yet Suzuki really manages to blend some great elements together – his own keys, lots of funky rhythms, saxes from Jiro Inagaki, and even a touch of vocals from Kyoko Ishu – used in ways that are relatively spare, and more musical than lyrical – which fits in perfectly with the groove! The feel of the set is like some lost bit of funky jazz from mid 70s Fantasy Records – and titles include "Screwdriver", "Scramble", "Between O & M", "Straight Flash", and "Out Of Focus". Mindbending work from guitarist Daniel Bachman – a player who may well be the John Fahey of the contemporary acoustic generation! Daniel works here mostly in a solo mode – with just a bit of banjo and fiddle at two points on the record – but his richly chromatic approach to the strings of the guitar unlock a whole world of color and sound – a mode that, at one level is rooted in older acoustic traditions – but at another is richly inventive, especially in the way that Bachman unlocks some metallic elements in the strings that bring a sharp edge to his music. A great Ray Barretto album from 1972 – one that beautifully showcases the master percussionist as he effortlessly shifts between Latin soul and 70's salsa styles! The group's nice and lean – with Adalberto Santiago on vocals, Papy Roman on trumpet, Louis Cruz on piano, and the great Andy Gonzalez on bass – a heck of a player whose solid rhythmic pulse was a big part of so many great albums of the time. Two great tracks make the album totally worth owning – "Right On" and "Power", both of are funky Latin soul numbers that are right out of Ray's Hard Hands period! Other tracks are equally great salsa numbers – and titles include "Y Dicen", "Perla Del Sur", and "Oye La Noticia". LP, Vinyl record album

An excellent collection of work from the great John Barry – one that focuses on his famous contributions for the James Bond films – but also includes other soundtrack and instrumental material as well! The set begins with the John Barry Plays 007 record – a brilliant album that not only features some instrumental soundtrack themes, but also includes some great mod Barry instrumentals from the 60s – kind of a nice link to his sophisticated film music, and some of his smaller combo work! Next are two tracks from Elizabeth Taylor In London – "Lovers & Browning", with a recitation by Taylor – plus the jazzy instrumental "The London Waltz". Next are two tracks from Zulu – a colonial period film that starred Michael Caine – followed by 15 more groovy instrumentals that include "Tit Willow Twist", "Hit & Miss", "Easy Beat", "Beat Girl", "The Lolly Theme", "Spinnerree", "Roman Spring Of Mrs Stone", "The Sun's Hooray", and "Saturday's Child". Maestro David Matthews is at the helm for this session – and most numbers have a full backing from players who include some of the best of the CTI/Kudu generation – including Ronnie Foster and Bobby Lyle on keyboards, Joe Farrell on flute, Fred Wesley on trombone, Eric Gale on rhythm guitar, Dave Friedman on vibes, and Steve Gadd on drums – who manages to kick in a nicely funky undercurrent, even on some of the mellower numbers. George's guitar is filled with warmly chromatic hues – gliding away nicely on titles that include the slow funky "Em", plus "Siberian Workout", "Shell Of A Man", "Hold On I'm Coming", "One Rock Don't Make No Boulder", and "Theme From Good King Bad". Great work from Polly Bergen – breathy and beautiful, but still plenty lively throughout – thanks to some backings from Jerry Fielding! The record's got a sound that's a fair bit more modern than some of Bergen's other albums from earlier years – and Fielding's use of bright horns, vibes, and other chromatic elements really helps to give the record a fuller sound next to Polly's dusky vocals. Many titles are familiar, but they're recast in arrangements that have a slightly groovier 60s mode – one that further helps enforce the sound of the set! A set of compositions penned by Roberto and Erasmo Carlos – sung by Maria Bethania in a warmly personal setting! The style here gets away from any of the too-romantic qualities that can sometimes mar presentation of the Carlos' brothers work – and instead, Bethania uses her innate sense of power and drama to give these tunes a subtle edge they might not have in the hands of other singers. Backings are sometimes full, but also in a subtle way – using strings slightly to flesh out other instrumentation that's more prominent in the mix. A set that's hardly background at all – as the tracks here have a lively, forward sort of energy that reminds us of our favorite post-punk experiments from the British and German scenes at the start of the 70s – done with a darkness that really resonates with the album's cover image too! There's hardly any vocals at all on the songs – other than muted, abstracted lyrics that are buried under brooding basslines, echoey drums, and fuzzy work on guitar and keyboards – all with a moody Factory Records sort of vibe – and by that, we mean Factory circa 1980, not the later sunnier years. The rhythm trio is tight, but fluid – and features Bill O'Connell on piano, Kenny Davis on bass, and Donald Edwards on drums – yet to our ears, Bowen's the main star on the record – and we've never heard him sounding so powerfully creative! A set of swinging large group sounds mixed with vocal jazz numbers – all recorded at Poland's Jazz Jamboree festival in 1964! The real highlight here for us is the music of the Gustav Brom Orchestra – that cool Czech ensemble that later recorded some gems for MPS/Saba, but who here are already moving into some of their more modern conceptions – that strong sense of both color and swing that made Brom such an inventive leader. The group perform the tunes "Sonor", "Get Out Of Town", "African Nights", "Romance Of The Sea", and "Deep Water". The set also features some swinging vocal jazz numbers from the great Rita Reys from the Netherlands – working here with the Pim Jacobs Trio, who always provided her with the best sort of sounds – on titles that include "Bluesette", "Willow Weep For Me", "Moonglow", "Speak Low", and "I Get A Kick Out Of You". The lovely and soulful Hadda Brooks was one of the great talents on the LA scene of the postwar years – a vocalist and pianist with a style that blended blues and jazz, in a manner that was like some of her male counterparts on the scene at the time, such as Nat King Cole or Charles Brown. Brooks' fame in the city was great, and even led to a few famous film appearances – but the sophistication of her work often kept it from cracking the charts as strongly as other R&B stars at the time. This excellent album is really the only one she ever issued – a strong set of tunes recorded for Crown/Modern in the 50s. A stunner from Kenny Burrell – one of his most sophisticated and soulful sessions of the 60s! Kenny's working here with the ultra-cool arranger Johnny Pate – best known for his work with Curtis Mayfield, and his 70s soundtrack fame – but a heck of a creative talent when it comes to a jazz session like this! For the record, Pate's created these spare little backdrops – not nearly as full as those penned by Don Sebesky or Claus Ogerman – and with a gentle sort of grooving quality that really pushes Kenny along nicely. Burrell's guitar is very strongly upfront in the mix – working chromatic magic at a level hardly ever matched again on record! Side one features the extended "Asphalt Canyon Suite" – a magnificent tune that's simply sublime – and side two features 5 shorter tracks, "Things Ain't What They Used To Be", "Put A Little Love In Your Heart", "Please Send Me Someone To Love", "Going To Jim & Andy's", and "Sugar Hill". Larry Blackmon's still at the head of the group – singing, drumming, and playing bass throughout – with plenty of support on keyboards and a variety of instruments from an army of session players called in for the record. The style's a bit less on the heavy funk tip of earlier Cameo records, but also steps along nicely in that mellower, midtempo groove that proved to be a great refuge for funk bands as the 80s wore on – a mode that's slightly romantic at times, but always handled with a bit of bounce at the bottom. Mercury (Japan), 1963. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Way more than just the usual snoozer you might expect from Clebanoff – thanks to a good dose of bossa in the mix! The style here is still heavy on the strings, as in the usual Clebanoff mode – but the overall arrangements are also considerably lighter, and trade previous romantic shadings for a breezier Brazilian mode – one that's carried off by lots of lightly snapping percussion at the bottom, and some great instrumental touches on guitar, vibes, and just a bit of flute! In a way, the record's almost a bridge between the older American and European instrumental style of the 50s and some of the new orchestrations that were being penned in Brazil in the 60s – a key early example of that influence on these shores, and featuring tunes that include "Land Of My Land", "Poinciana", "O Passaro", "Jazz Samba", "Mima", and Lalo Schifrin's "Whispering Bossa Nova". ✨✧ Jessi Colter with Waylon JenningsCountry Star Is Born/Leather & Lace ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), 1970/1981. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The first-ever album from Jessi Colter – paired here with a famous duet set with husband Waylon Jennings! First up is A Country Star Is Born – the fantastic debut of Jessi Colter – done at a time when the lady had already hitched up with Waylon Jennings at a personal level, and was also sharing some of his nascent outlaw qualities in her music! In fact, we might make an argument that this album predates some of Jennings' bigger outlaw moments – and also has a similar sort of quality in the early years – with qualities in Colter's voice that are very different than the Nashville mainstream, almost as if she's equally aware of phrasing from female folk singers – set to a very hip batch of tunes from Colter herself (as Miriam Eddy), Harlan Howard, Willie Nelson, and Mickey Newbury. The set includes a duet with Waylon Jennings on "I Ain't The One" – and other titles include "It's Not Easy", "He Called Me Baby", "Too Many Rivers", "Cry Softly", and "If She's Where You Like Livin". Leather & Lace is the first full album of duets between Jessi Colter and Waylon Jennings – two romantic partners who'd been crossing paths on records a few times during the 70s, and finally got the chance to step out in an album of their own! The approach is a bit like some of the other RCA pairings of stars during the 70s, in that sometimes Waylon is mostly in the lead, sometimes Jessi – but you can definitely hear the sympathy that both feel for each other, and the album's most special moments really come when they share the lead together. Titles include "Pastels & Harmony", "You Never Can Tell", "Rainy Seasons", "I'll Be Alright", "You're Not My Same Sweet Baby", "Storms Never Last", and "What's Happened To Blue Eyes". CD

John ColtranePianist's Touch – John Coltrane Plays The Compositions Of Tommy Flanagan & Tadd Dameron (Mating Call/Cats) ... CD
Prestige/Phoenix (Spain), 1956/1957. Used ... $9.99
John Coltrane works here with two strong pianists – both on different sessions from his early years at Prestige! Mating Call is first up – a sublime early set from Coltrane, and one of Tadd Dameron's greatest moments on record ever! The session's a laidback quartet one – with John Simmons on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums, completing the group with Dameron on piano and Trane on tenor – all coming together in a style that's loose, but still quite sharp overall – especially given Coltrane's tremendous tone, which really helps take the record to the next level from the very first moment it comes into the mix! Dameron's piano is strong, but subtle – and his compositions are what really make the record great – tunes that include "Soultrane", "Mating Call", "Romas", "Super Jet", and "On A Misty Night". Cats is a record issued under the name of pianist Tommy Flanagan – one of the best Prestige Records blowing sessions from the late 50s – an all-star sextet effort that features Flanagan on piano, John Coltrane on tenor, Idrees Sulieman on trumpet, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Doug Watkins on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. Tracks are long, and open – and although each player is really at their best on their solos, there's still a sense of group unity that makes the record stand out from other efforts of its type – enough so that it's often cited as a key early entry in the Coltrane catalog. Titles include "Eclypso", "Solacium", "Tommy's Tune", and "Minor Mishap". CD also features the track "How Long Has This Been Going On", which only features the rhythm section, without Coltrane or Sulieman. CD

Norman ConnorsSlewfoot ... LP
Buddah, 1974. Very Good ... $9.99
A really bold step forward for Norman Connors – a set that's still got all the spiritual jazz elements of his roots, but which also adds in some more soul and funk elements too! Jean Carn delivers some wonderful vocals on the record – at a level that's much more like her early Black Jazz recordings with Doug Carn, than her later Philly soul sides – and Connors heads up a killer instrumental group that features reeds from Hubert Laws, Carlos Garnett, and Gary Bartz – plus wicked keyboards from Reggie Lucas and percussion from Dom Um Romao too! The fusion players are all super-sharp – and really make the whole album crackle wonderfully throughout – on a mix of instrumental and vocal tracks that include "Mother Of The Future", "Slew Foot", "Dreams", "Chuka", "Back On The Street", and "Jump Street". LP, Vinyl record album

A cool condensation of the great Slewfoot album – four of the best tracks on a double 7" single! The album's a really bold step forward for Norman Connors – a set that's still got all the spiritual jazz elements of his roots, but which also adds in some more soul and funk elements too! Kenny CoxClap Clap – The Joyful Noise (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Strata/180 Proof, 1974. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99
Amazing lost sounds from Detroit – a previously unissued album from pianist Kenny Cox – best known for his late 60s albums on Blue Note, but working here in a really righteous style, and using a fair bit of Fender Rhodes as well! The album's a lost gem from the Strata label – home to Lyman Woodard's Saturday Night Special album – and there's definitely a side to this record that's shared with that one – a bit more laidback, definitely, but equally soulful, and mixed with spiritual jazz elements that echo the style of Kenny's Tribe Records contemporaries on the Detroit scene. Other players include Charles Moore on flugelhorn, Buzz Jones on soprano sax and flute, Ron English on bass, and Skeets Curry on electric guitar – and in addition to Fender Rhodes, Cox also plays clavinet, mellotron, and Arp as well! The set's got a bit of vocals – from Fito Foster and Nengue Hernandez – but the main focus is instrumental, and the long tracks really have the group spinning out beautifully. Titles include "Clap Clap The Joyful Noise", "Samba De Romance", "Island Song", "Lost My Love", and "Beyond The Dream". LP, Vinyl record album

Joe CubaEl Alma Del Barrio – The Soul Of Spanish Harlem ... CD
Tico, 1964. Used ... $14.99
The Soul of Spanish Harlem – and the upbeat sound of the Joe Cuba Sextet – a hard-to-find album recorded just before the dawn of the classic Latin soul era! This one has been underappreciated for years, which is a shame, because it's got a lot of very nice grooves with that tight Joe Cuba Sextet sound – full snapping percussion and tight rhythms. There's also a few romantic tracks led by keys and a surprisingly warm approach to the vocals, but most of the set is pretty straight ahead Latin! Tracks include "You're Gone", "La Fuga Pal Monte", "Galan, Galan", "Y Sigue", "Solo Por Ti", "Guaguanco Del Jibarito", "Una Nenita", and "El Tapon". CD
(Out of print.)
