Rolling StonesAftermath (UK version) (gold SACD pressing) ... CD
London/Abkco, 1966. Used ... $11.99 14.99
A record that's a real step forward for The Rolling Stones – a set that really marks the emergence of the Jagger/Richards team as a songwriting powerhouse for the 60s – and which has the group moving past bluesy roots into some nicely trippier territory at times! Everything from the previous years is still nicely intact – but the band are definitely on the way towards that Stones sound that made them very distinct from other blues-inspired UK acts of their generation – heard here in a mix of classic singles and overlooked LP tracks – more material than the US version! Titles include "Mothers Little Helper", "High & Dry", "Lady Jane", "Stupid Girl", "Under My Thumb", "Out Of Time", and "Flight 505". CD
(Out of print, 2002 hybrid SACD pressing with disc made in Japan – works on regular CD players too!)

Rolling StonesGet Yer Ya Ya's Out – The Rolling Stones In Concert ... LP
London, 1970. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A landmark live set from the Rolling Stones – featuring material from their smoking tour of 1969! The set really captures the Stones at their most nasty – that great turning point when their edge was maybe sharpest of ever, right in the best Let It Bleed mode – but with even more raw energy from the live setting. Titles include "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Love In Vain", "Carol", "Live With Me", "Street Fighting Man", "Sympathy For The Devil", "Little Queenie", "Honky Tonk Women" and "Stray Cat Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label stereo pressing with Sterling stamp. NOTE – Cover has some ring and edge wear and thick fabric tape holding the spine.)

Rolling StonesGoats Head Soup ... LP
Rolling Stones, 1973. Very Good Gatefold ... $14.99
A sometimes-overlooked classic from the Rolling Stones – but that's maybe just because it's sometimes obscured in the shadow of Exile On Main Street, the record that immediately preceded it! And while it might be a stretch to some, we like to think of Goat's head as kind of a capper to that double-length set – as the Stones are still working out a fair bit of similar ideas, with an opening ear to some global currents, and with great help from some of their key collaborators too. The set's worth it alone for the classic gut-wrencher "Angie" – and other tracks include "Star Star", "Hide Your Love", "Winter", "Can You Hear The Music", "100 Years Ago", and "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing with PR suffix. Includes the printed inner sleeve and insert! Cover has a name in pen and light wear.)

✨✧ Rolling StonesLet It Bleed ... LP
London, 1969. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Hard to go wrong with a Stones classic like this one – a record that really has the group hitting their late 60s stride, and coming across with a depth and power that really goes beyond their earlier releases! There's a sinister quality to the record right from the start – thanks to the brooding, haunting power of "Gimmie Shelter" – and the sublime "Monkey Man", which may well be one of our favorite Rolling Stones songs ever! But the whole thing's great – and other tracks include "Love In Vain", "Let It Bleed", "Live With Me", "Midnight Rambler", "Country Honk", and the classic "You Can't Always Get What You Want". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 80s Abkco remaster with large London logo labels. Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

Abkco, 1975. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A 70s album from The Stones, but one with a 60s-looking cover – and for good reason too, as the set features a whole host of unissued gems from their first decade in the studio! The package is a great reminder of how strong the group were at the start – so much so that the set ended up standing quite strongly next to other 70s giants from Mick and Keith. LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing with DFWK etch. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cut corner and ring wear.)

Rolling StonesSticky Fingers ... LP
Rolling Stones, 1971. Very Good+ ... $39.99
Landmark work from The Rolling Stones – and a set that may well stand alongside Exile On Main Street for capturing the group at their height! The record's got the Stones very much in their own space – years from just putting a UK spin on American blues – and instead, finding a way to take all their best influences, and fuse them into a nasty, gritty sound that's complete genius all the way through! Yet at the same time, the set also has them more comfortable with rootsy elements too – but returning to styles in ways that are very different than their youth – with a new sort of mature confidence that holds the album together wonderfully. Titles include "Brown Sugar", "Wild Horses", "You Gotta Move", "Can't You Hear Me Knocking", "Bitch", "Sister Morphine", "Dead Flowers", and "I Got The Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(75 Rockefeller label pressing in the zipper cover. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Vinyl play with a short click on "Knocking". Cover has light wear on the 'buckle' and a tiny peel spot that has been colored in.)

Rolling Stones, 1981. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An album that some thought might mark the final years of The Rolling Stones – as it came out as Mick Jagger was reaching 40 – but one that instead marked a great rebirth of the group and its sound, and set a whole new standard for the group for years to come! The opening lick of the first track, "Start Me Up", has become one of The Stones trademark sonic fingerprints – and the whole thing keeps on moving strong, through titles that include "Hang Fire", "Slave", "Black Limousine", "Worried About You", "Waiting On A Friend", "No Use In Crying", "Tops", and "Little T & A". Rolling StonesTheir Satanic Majesties Request ... LP
London, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $29.99
A record that was initially thought by some as a cheap cash-in on the Sgt Peppers concept – but an album that, to us, really helped set The Rolling Stones free to express themselves in so many new and amazing ways! There's definitely a bit of the hippie vibe to the set at times – such as sitar that might have been unimaginable on a Stones track a few years before – but there's also an explosively creative approach to the album's arrangements and production, creating a kaleidoscope of sounds that only further seems to illuminate the Jagger and Richards genius! Titles include the classic "She's A Rainbow" – plus "Citadel", "2000 Man", "On With The Show", "Sing All This Together", "In Another Land", "The Lantern", and "Gomper". LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram 2018 reissue in a lenticular cover. Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

Rolling Stones, 1983. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A bit of an odd album, but one that showed the Stones were alive and kicking in the 80s. Taking off from the Stones' take on disco from their previous couple of LPs but keeping a nice rough edge on the proceedings, Jagger and Richards turned in what's probably their last great studio LP. 10 tracks in all, including "Undercover Of The Night", "She Was Hot", "Tie You Up (The Pain Of Love)", "Wanna Hold You", "Feel On Baby", 'Too Much Blood", "Pretty Beat Up", "All The Way Down" and "It Must Be Hell". A club crossover classic from The Rolling Stones – a track that surprisingly got the group onto the dancefloor in the late 70s, but which still held onto most of their best elements! Although sometimes panned as a cheap disco cash-in effort by some, the tune is actually pretty darn great – a gritty little tune that relies on heavy vamping, rolled-out guitar parts, and one of the catchiest vocal hooks that Mick Jagger had sung in years. Harmonica completes the sound, and the whole thing's got a bluesy undercurrent that's totally great! 12-inch, Vinyl record

A landmark live set from the Rolling Stones – featuring material from their smoking tour of 1969! Titles include "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Love In Vain", "Carol", "Live With Me", "Street Fighting Man", "Sympathy For The Devil", "Little Queenie", "Honky Tonk Women" and "Stray Cat Blues". CD

CD

Rolling Stones, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD

CD

Essentially early Stones! 12 X 5 is The Rolling Stones at a very early, hard grooving peak, way back in '64. It's ground breaking stuff, in they they truly pave the way for so much of the soul, blues and R&B loving Anglos to come out of the Brit and US scenes in the months and years to come. It's a covers-heavy set, given that they were just beginning to do doing original material at this early point – and the tracks include the Jagger/Richards penned "Good Times, Bad Times", "Congradulations" and "Grown Up Wrong" – plus "Time Is On My Side", "Around And Around", "2120 South Michigan Avenue", "Susie Q" and more. Abkco, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great audio documentary of a really mindblowing film – one that captures the Rolling Stones at that key late 60s point when they were stepping into really sinister territory – playing in a very vivid setting, along with some of their key up-and-coming contemporaries on the scene! The whole thing builds up with the energy of a circus – the Stones are last, and there's a growing mix of performers introduced by various members of the band – really presented in a carnivalesque array, before the lead act comes in and knocks it out of the park. The set features a killer early version of "A Quick One While He's Away" by The Who – maybe one of the high points of the set – plus "Song For Jeffrey" by Jethro Tull, Whole Lotta Yoko" by Yoko Ono & The Dirty Mac (John Lennon), "Ain't That A Lot Of Love" by Taj Mahal, and "Something Better" by Marianne Faithfull. The Rolling Stones round things out with performances of "Sympathy For The Devil", "Parachute Woman", "Jumpin Jack Flash", "Salt Of The Earth", "No Expectations", and "You Can't Always Get What You Want". A legendary night at Chicago's Checkerboard Lounge – a set recorded at a time when the Rolling Stones were in town, and decided to pop down to the south side, and visit the home turf of their blues hero, Muddy Waters! You'll notice that the record bills the performance as Muddy Waters & The Rolling stones – and that's definitely the case here, as the Stones step in almost as Muddy's backing band – allowing Waters to really step out in the lead, while the group remind us that way back in the day, they got their start as a blues-based group first, before finding a style of their own! The set's also filled with guest appearances – including work from Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, and Lefty Dizz – and titles include "Mannish Boy", "Hoochie Coochie Man", "Long Distance Call", "Next Time You See Me", "Champagne & Reefer", "Clouds In My Heart", "One Eyed Woman", and "You Don't Have To Go". Rolling Stones, Late 60s/1971. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Stones member Brian Jones put together this landmark bit of trippiness for the Rolling Stones label. Although the music is largely ethnographic, the whole thing's got this neo-colonialist hipster edge to it – as Brion Gysin wrote the liner notes, Jones wrote an introduction (and included his picture), and the whole thing was made possible by the presence of British junkies in Morrocco. The music is very trippy and trance-like, with lots of pinched reed sounds and haunting throbbing pulsing. Wild stuff, and a cool cross-pollination of cultures. LP, Vinyl record album

Grapefruit (UK), Mid 1960s. New Copy 3CDs ... $29.99 36.99
The grittier side of the UK scene in the mid 60s – a whole host of work by groups who were strongly influenced by American soul, blues, and R&B – but were also really starting to put together sounds that were very much their own! The Rolling Stones were obviously the biggest stars of this moment – but this set digs much deeper, and brings out a fair bit of work that never made it over to our side of the Atlantic – mixed with very early cuts from artists that you might know from much bigger records later on! And while there's definitely a soulful current running through the music, most of these acts are more rock than anything else – although a few important acts also bring in some nice elements of jazz too. The 3CD set has a massive 91 tracks in all – all with great notes inside – and as you might guess from the title reference, The Yardbirds are included in the lineup – next to others who include The Talismen, Shades Of Blue, Mike Cotton Sound, Fuzz, The Iveys, The Hoochie Coochie Men, Original Four-Tunes, Nashville Teens, The Bad Boys, Stylos, Zombies, Art Wood Combo, Remo Four, Toggery Five, The Plebs, Screaming Lord Sutch, Soul Agents, Saxons, The Kinks, Mickey Finn & The Blue Men, Group 5, Shel Naylor, Cops N Robbers, and dozens of others! Reprise, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A sweet Cali set from The Meters – one that loses a bit of their rougher roots, yet still holds onto plenty of funk at the same time! By the mid 70s, the New Orleans soul sound had broken out of the underground, was residing happily in mainstream LA. Allen Toussaint already produced a bucketful of albums for Warner Brothers, and The Meters themselves are working in a crossover territory that has them touring with the Rolling Stones and hitting a whole new range of college-type audiences. The group's smoothed things out considerably, but still manages to funk nicely at the best moments – in a warmer way than during the Josie Records years, but still with a groove that's much deeper than most of their contemporaries. Titles are a much a "trick bag" as the title – with a cover of Earl King's "Trick Bag" that features guest vocals by Earl, a remake of "(Doodle Loop) The World is a Little Bit Under the Weather", one of their best from the Josie days, a cover of "Honky Tonk Woman", which we can only assume was played on tour with The Stones – plus the original cuts "Chug A Lug", "Mister Moon", and "Find Yourself". Earl McGrath looks pretty darn cool on the cover, and from all reports he was a pretty darn cool guy in the 70s too – head of Rolling Stones Records, and friend and confidant to some very hip folks in the music industry! After Earl passed, a closet full of unreleased tapes was discovered at his home – really wonderful material by artists big and small, brought together here in a treasure trove of tracks that give us a whole different look at the 70s! Given the obscurity, most titles are demo recordings with lean instrumentation – but that quality makes the work by big stars even more interesting, and really delivers the best work of the special singer/songwriters that McGrath would always champion. Despite the British nature of this record – and despite the fact that production is by Mick Jagger, Andrew Loog Oldham, and others – the sound here is almost in the best US soul mode of the 60s, with full arrangements and sweeping strings that remind us of some of the strongest New York uptown soul of the mid 60s! Titles include "If You Think You're Groovy", "Born To Be Together", "The First Cut Is The Deepest", "Something Beautiful Happened", "Life Is But Nothing", "Speak To Me", and "Would You Believe". CD also features 3 bonus tracks – including a version of "Come Home Baby" sung as a duet with Rod Stewart! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ruth CopelandI Am What I Am ... LP
Invictus, 1971. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A second sublime set from Ruth Copeland – a funky female singer from the Detroit scene of the early 70s, with key ties to the P-Funk universe, and a unique groove that mixes singer/songwriter modes with the fuzzier funkier elements of artists like Betty Davis or Yvonne Fair! There's a bit more emphasis on soul here than the funk of Copeland's previous efforts – but in a way that makes for an even more impressive record overall, especially when you realize that Ruth arranged and produced the whole thing. George Clinton and Eddie Hazel both had a hand in co-writing songs with Copeland – and instrumentation features Hazel on guitar, plus Bernie Worrell on piano – so there's still a key P-Funk link. Titles include the breakbeat track "Suburban Family Lament", the fuzzy stoner funk number "Don't You Wish You Had", and covers of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" and "Play With Fire" – plus "Crying Has Made Me Stronger", "Hare Krishna", and "The Medal". Deity, 1969. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A pretty great idea for a late 60s rock record – even if the record itself is even better than its idea! The whole concept of the "masked marauders" was that the group was supposedly formed by big rockers of the time – unable to be listed on the cover, because of contractual obligations. And in truth, the set does sound a lot like it could have been lifted from sessions by The Rolling Stones, or Get Back-era Beatles – plus maybe a few other contemporaries too – yet it's all actually the work of some great unknowns, who came up with a sweet gimmick to get the record out there! On its own, the set's a real charmer – and has a mix of rootsy modes and tighter, deeper ideas that's not unlike some of the George Harrison/Phil Spector work – save for those moments when the Marauders are clearly trying to sound a bit more like a big name act. Titles include "I Can't Get No Nookie", "Cow Pie", "Duke Of Earl", "I Am The Japanese Sandman", "Later", "More Or Less Hudson's Bay Again", and "Season Of The Witch". LP, Vinyl record album

Mojo, 2024. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
This issue of Mojo looks at the 30 greatest songs by Steely Dan – a large number, but maybe not big enough – given the greatness of the group! There's also plenty of other classic features – rare photos of the Rolling Stones, and more on Marvin Gaye, The Ramones, Lenny Kravitz, and the Butthole Surfers – plus Stone Roses guitarist John Squire and the mighty Liam Gallagher! The issue also features a bonus CD with 15 tracks from famous northern bands – including James, The Fall, Magazine, Blue Orchids, Inspiral Carpets, and others – plus the usual huge section of Mojo reviews! Stix (France), 2017. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The third volume in this wonderful series – and like the other volumes, a record that really lives up to its name! The groove here mixes together 70s roots in disco and reggae – and comes up with a cool contemporary blend that's mighty nice – held together through top-shelf production from key French talents who include Mato and Patchworks – in a groove that's nicely unified throughout! Many tunes are covers and remakes – the set includes great versions of songs by Herbie Hancock, Rolling Stones, Donna Summer, and others – but all done in these very fresh new ways that are completely unique. Titles include "Feel Like Makin Love" by The Dynamics, "Disco Illusion" by Taggy Matcher, "Melt The Night (Mato reggae rmx)" by Lucas Arruda, "Miss You (ext disco version)" by The Dynamics, "Shake It Dub (ext 12" version)" by 7 Samurai, "Cantaloupe Island" by Taggy Matcher, "Movin In The Right Direction" by Mato, and "Loev To Love You Baby" by Rosemary Martins. LP, Vinyl record album
