Rolling Stones12 x 5 ... LP
London, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $22.99
Essentially early Stones! 12 X 5 is The Rolling Stones at a very early, hard grooving peak, way back in '64. It's ground breaking stuff, in they they truly pave the way for so much of the soul, blues and R&B loving Anglos to come out of the Brit and US scenes in the months and years to come. It's a covers-heavy set, given that they were just beginning to do doing original material at this early point – and the tracks include the Jagger/Richards penned "Good Times, Bad Times", "Congradulations" and "Grown Up Wrong" – plus "Time Is On My Side", "Around And Around", "2120 South Michigan Avenue", "Susie Q" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

A landmark live set from the Rolling Stones – featuring material from their smoking tour of 1969! London, 1969. Very Good ... $14.99
Hard to go wrong with a Stones classic like this one – a record that really has the group hitting their late 60s stride, and coming across with a depth and power that really goes beyond their earlier releases! There's a sinister quality to the record right from the start – thanks to the brooding, haunting power of "Gimmie Shelter" – and the sublime "Monkey Man", which may well be one of our favorite Rolling Stones songs ever! But the whole thing's great – and other tracks include "Love In Vain", "Let It Bleed", "Live With Me", "Midnight Rambler", "Country Honk", and the classic "You Can't Always Get What You Want". ✨✧ Rolling StonesMiss You/Far Away Eyes ... 12-inch
Rolling Stones, 1978. Very Good+ ... $8.99
A club crossover classic from The Rolling Stones – a track that surprisingly got the group onto the dancefloor in the late 70s, but which still held onto most of their best elements! Although sometimes panned as a cheap disco cash-in effort by some, the tune is actually pretty darn great – a gritty little tune that relies on heavy vamping, rolled-out guitar parts, and one of the catchiest vocal hooks that Mick Jagger had sung in years. Harmonica completes the sound, and the whole thing's got a bluesy undercurrent that's totally great! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Rolling StonesTheir Satanic Majesties Request ... CD
London/Abkco, 1967. Used ... $6.99
A record that was initially thought by some as a cheap cash-in on the Sgt Peppers concept – but an album that, to us, really helped set The Rolling Stones free to express themselves in so many new and amazing ways! There's definitely a bit of the hippie vibe to the set at times – such as sitar that might have been unimaginable on a Stones track a few years before – but there's also an explosively creative approach to the album's arrangements and production, creating a kaleidoscope of sounds that only further seems to illuminate the Jagger and Richards genius! Titles include the classic "She's A Rainbow" – plus "Citadel", "2000 Man", "On With The Show", "Sing All This Together", "In Another Land", "The Lantern", and "Gomper". CD

Rolling Stones, 1983. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A bit of an odd album, but one that showed the Stones were alive and kicking in the 80s. Taking off from the Stones' take on disco from their previous couple of LPs but keeping a nice rough edge on the proceedings, Jagger and Richards turned in what's probably their last great studio LP. 10 tracks in all, including "Undercover Of The Night", "She Was Hot", "Tie You Up (The Pain Of Love)", "Wanna Hold You", "Feel On Baby", 'too Much Blood", "Pretty Beat Up", "All The Way Down" and "It Must Be Hell". Rolling Stones & OthersRolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus (2CD expanded edition) ... CD
Abkco, 1968. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 16.98
A great audio documentary of a really mindblowing film – one that captures the Rolling Stones at that key late 60s point when they were stepping into really sinister territory – playing in a very vivid setting, along with some of their key up-and-coming contemporaries on the scene! The whole thing builds up with the energy of a circus – the Stones are last, and there's a growing mix of performers introduced by various members of the band – really presented in a carnivalesque array, before the lead act comes in and knocks it out of the park. The set features a killer early version of "A Quick One While He's Away" by The Who – maybe one of the high points of the set – plus "Song For Jeffrey" by Jethro Tull, "Whole Lotta Yoko" by Yoko Ono & The Dirty Mac (John Lennon), "Ain't That A Lot Of Love" by Taj Mahal, and "Something Better" by Marianne Faithfull. The Rolling Stones round things out with performances of "Sympathy For The Devil", "Parachute Woman", "Jumpin Jack Flash", "Salt Of The Earth", "No Expectations", and "You Can't Always Get What You Want". Plus, this double-length version has unreleased tracks "Warmup Jam" and "Revolution (rehearsal)" by The Dirty Mac, "Leaving Trunk" and "Corinna" by Taj Mahal, and the odd symphonic works "Ritual Fire Dance" and Mozart's "Sonata In C Major" by Julius Katchen. The Rolling Stones at their rawest, most shambling, sleazy and brilliant – the epic, unimpeachable Exile On Main Street! What can we say about one of the most iconic LPs of all time other than chime in with our agreement that it's one of the greatest rock albums ever! Big choruses come and go, but the easy hooks of earlier and later Stones hits are buried in mud, grit and a sleazy bluesy groove. Titles include "Rocks Off", "Rip This Joint", "Tumbing Dice", "Sweet Virginia", "Loving Cub", "Torn And Frayed", "Let It Loose", "All Down The Line", "Shine A Light", "Soul Survivor" and more. Landmark work from The Rolling Stones – and a set that may well stand alongside Exile On Main Street for capturing the group at their height! The record's got the Stones very much in their own space – years from just putting a UK spin on American blues – and instead, finding a way to take all their best influences, and fuse them into a nasty, gritty sound that's complete genius all the way through! Yet at the same time, the set also has them more comfortable with rootsy elements too – but returning to styles in ways that are very different than their youth – with a new sort of mature confidence that holds the album together wonderfully. Titles include "Brown Sugar", "Wild Horses", "You Gotta Move", "Can't You Hear Me Knocking", "Bitch", "Sister Morphine", "Dead Flowers", and "I Got The Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Wonderful easy grooves – from an orchestra leader who couldn't read a note of music! During the 60s, Andrew Oldham was probably best known to the world as the flamboyant manager of the Rolling Stones – but during the same period, or at least the earliest stretch of it, he also headed up his own studio orchestra – working with pop arranger David Whittaker to craft some incredibly groovy albums! This one's the ensemble's fourth and final effort – a magical transformation of familiar Rolling Stones numbers into some sweet easy instrumentals – all asparkle with the best styles of mid 60s Brit easy, served up with orchestrations that run from baroque to breezy! Titles include "Blue Turns To Grey", "You Better Move On", "Heart Of Stone", "Time Is On My Side", "The Last Time", "Theme For A Rolling Stone", and "Tell Me". CD

During the mid 70s, a number of major label rock stars had their dalliance with reggae, and after inviting him to tour with them, the Stones decided to start releasing Peter Tosh's LPs. This record was the first of Tosh's released by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger on their Rolling Stones label and they guest on a couple of tracks. Despite their presence, the album is a fairly solid roots effort, if a bit uneven, though not quite as radical or grooving as Equal Rights or Legalize It. Tracks include "Pick Myself Up", "Soon Come", "Moses- The Prophets", "Stand Firm", "Dem Ha Fe Get A Beaten", and "Creation". LP, Vinyl record album

Rolling Stones, 1979. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A great late 70s album from former Wailer Tosh, to our ears a good bit better than Bush Doctor, the set that had preceded it. We're guessing that has a lot to do with the smoking Word, Sound & Power band Tosh recruited to deliver the chugging riddims underneath his militant lyrics, which featured Sly & Robbie as the foundation, plus guest that include Sticky and Skully peppering the proceedings with some nice rootical percussion, and backing vocals from the Tamlins and stateside friends Gwen Guthrie, Yvonne Lewis and Brneda White. 9 tracks in all: "Mystic Man", "Recruiting Soldiers", "Can't You See", "Jah She No", "Fight On", "Buk-In-Hamm Palace", "The Day The Dollar Die", "Crystal Ball" and "Rumours Of War". Clydie KingRushing To Meet You ... CD
Tiger Lily/Everland (Austria), 1976. New Copy ... $14.99
The rare second album from Clydie King – recorded at a time when she was lending her backing vocals to artists like The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, and Humble Pie – but a set that firmly puts Clydie in the lead! King's got an amazing style of singing – deep and raspy at one moment, with key southern soul roots – yet also totally tight and together, too – with a focus that really shines on the album's more upbeat tracks – groovers that almost have an east coast club vibe at times, quite similar to material that Clydie recorded with the group Brown Sugar! Titles include "Rushing To Meet You", "Loving You Is So Easy", "Steal Your Love Away", "Punish Me", "Our Love Is Special", and "Morning Sun". CD

✨✧ CharmainesI Idolize You – The Fraternity Recordings 1960 to 1964 ... LP
Fraternity/Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A long-overdue collection of work by this sublime Ohio soul group of the 60s – a trio of lovely ladies with a really tremendous sound! The Charmaines – also known as Gigi & The Charmaines – are hardly the girl group cliche you might think from their sweet name and the image on the cover – and on most of the numbers here, they're hard-rolling at a pace that's somewhere between the best Detroit Northern Soul of the time, and some of the sweeter female soul that was coming out of Chicago at the end of the 60s. This package focuses mostly on the group's Fraternity Records singles, including a few unissued tracks – and titles include "GI Joe (first version)", "I Idolize You", "On The Wagon", "Goodbye Baby Goodbye", "Rockin Pneumonia", "Rockin Old Man", "Where Is The Boy Tonight", "All You Gotta Do", and "What Kind Of Girl" – plus their work with Lonnie Mack on "Money" and "Sticks & Stones", and with Carl Edmondson on "Baby Please Don't Go". ✨✧ Ruth CopelandI Am What I Am (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Invictus/Demon (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A second sublime set from Ruth Copeland – a funky female singer from the Detroit scene of the early 70s, with key ties to the P-Funk universe, and a unique groove that mixes singer/songwriter modes with the fuzzier funkier elements of artists like Betty Davis or Yvonne Fair! There's a bit more emphasis on soul here than the funk of Copeland's previous efforts – but in a way that makes for an even more impressive record overall, especially when you realize that Ruth arranged and produced the whole thing. George Clinton and Eddie Hazel both had a hand in co-writing songs with Copeland – and instrumentation features Hazel on guitar, plus Bernie Worrell on piano – so there's still a key P-Funk link. Titles include the breakbeat track "Suburban Family Lament", the fuzzy stoner funk number "Don't You Wish You Had", and covers of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" and "Play With Fire" – plus "Crying Has Made Me Stronger", "Hare Krishna", and "The Medal". ✨✧ Marianne FaithfullCome & Stay With Me – The UK 45s 1964 to 1969 ... CD
Decca/Abkco, Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wealth of wonderful work from Marianne Faithfull, all pulled from those key early years when she was part of the musical world of Andrew Loog Oldham and the Rolling Stones! Yet right from the start, despite the fact that she sang a few Stones songs on her own (and wrote a few for the group, too) – Marianne was always very much her own singer, and had a way with a song that was quite different than most of the other UK girl pop artists of the time too! Faithfull sometimes has a trill, and always has a sense of darkness on these singles – almost in the territory of the young Nico, but more tuneful and less moody – and superbly set up in just the right sort of arrangements by Mike Leander, David Whitaker, and even the great Jack Nitzsche. CD features all the a and b-sides of these early singles, plus a huge amount of notes – and 22 tracks that include "Morning Sun", "Sister Morphine", "As Tears Go By", "Summer Nights", "The Sha La La Song", "Something Better", "I'd Like To Dial Your Number", "Counting", "That's Right Baby", "Tomorrow's Calling", "This Little Bird", "What Have I Done Wrong", and "Go Away From My World". ✨✧ Rob JovanovicGod Save The Kinks – A Biography ... Book
Aurum (UK), 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A behind-the-scenes look at The Kinks – a group you'll know for their fantastic music of the 60s and 70s, but who also have a much larger tale behind their songs! The book certainly offers up plenty of history on the group, and strong appreciation of their music – but it also opens up the sibling rivalry between Ray and Dave Davies, and the tension in the group that often undermined all the creative success they were having at the time. The Kinks never got the kind of star attention over there that was given to the Rolling Stones, Who, or Beatles – so there's a fair bit here that's new to our eyes – laid out in fast-moving prose that manages to never sound too salacious or exploitative. 330 pages, softcover, with some black and white images.
