✨✧ Rolling StonesBeggars Banquet ... LP
Decca, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
One of the greatest albums ever from The Rolling Stones – a set that still draws on all the bluesy roots of their best 60s material, yet which also shows a sharper, nastier edge as well! The album shows the tremendous sense of focus and power the Stones had in this crucial late 60s stretch – a bold step forward that would give them some of their most memorable moments ever, launched by this sublime set of tracks that includes "Sympathy For The Devil", "Street Fighting Man", "Dear Doctor", "Parachute Woman", "Prodigal Son", "Factory Girl", and "Stray Cat Blues". Rolling StonesGoats Head Soup ... LP
Rolling Stones, 1973. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A sometimes-overlooked classic from the Rolling Stones – but that's maybe just because it's sometimes obscured in the shadow of Exile On Main Street, the record that immediately preceded it! And while it might be a stretch to some, we like to think of Goat's head as kind of a capper to that double-length set – as the Stones are still working out a fair bit of similar ideas, with an opening ear to some global currents, and with great help from some of their key collaborators too. The set's worth it alone for the classic gut-wrencher "Angie" – and other tracks include "Star Star", "Hide Your Love", "Winter", "Can You Hear The Music", "100 Years Ago", and "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes printed inner sleeve. Cover has a fully unglued bottom seam. Vinyl plays with a few light clicks on both sides.)

Rolling StonesLet It Bleed ... LP
London, 1969. Very Good- ... $24.99
Hard to go wrong with a Stones classic like this one – a record that really has the group hitting their late 60s stride, and coming across with a depth and power that really goes beyond their earlier releases! There's a sinister quality to the record right from the start – thanks to the brooding, haunting power of "Gimmie Shelter" – and the sublime "Monkey Man", which may well be one of our favorite Rolling Stones songs ever! But the whole thing's great – and other tracks include "Love In Vain", "Let It Bleed", "Live With Me", "Midnight Rambler", "Country Honk", and the classic "You Can't Always Get What You Want". ✨✧ Rolling StonesSticky Fingers ... LP
Rolling Stones, 1971. Very Good+ ... $79.99
Landmark work from The Rolling Stones – and a set that may well stand alongside Exile On Main Street for capturing the group at their height! The record's got the Stones very much in their own space – years from just putting a UK spin on American blues – and instead, finding a way to take all their best influences, and fuse them into a nasty, gritty sound that's complete genius all the way through! Yet at the same time, the set also has them more comfortable with rootsy elements too – but returning to styles in ways that are very different than their youth – with a new sort of mature confidence that holds the album together wonderfully. Titles include "Brown Sugar", "Wild Horses", "You Gotta Move", "Can't You Hear Me Knocking", "Bitch", "Sister Morphine", "Dead Flowers", and "I Got The Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Rolling StonesTheir Satanic Majesties Request ... LP
London, 1967. Very Good Gatefold ... $33.99
A record that was initially thought by some as a cheap cash-in on the Sgt Peppers concept – but an album that, to us, really helped set The Rolling Stones free to express themselves in so many new and amazing ways! There's definitely a bit of the hippie vibe to the set at times – such as sitar that might have been unimaginable on a Stones track a few years before – but there's also an explosively creative approach to the album's arrangements and production, creating a kaleidoscope of sounds that only further seems to illuminate the Jagger and Richards genius! Titles include the classic "She's A Rainbow" – plus "Citadel", "2000 Man", "On With The Show", "Sing All This Together", "In Another Land", "The Lantern", and "Gomper". LP, Vinyl record album

CD
(Out of print, 2002 Hybrid SACD pressing – works on regular CD players too!)

✨✧ Rolling StonesGoats Head Soup (2LP deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Rolling Stones, 1973. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
This great 2LP set features a new stereo mix of the entire album on the first disc – and the second features great rare and alternate tracks – including "Heartbreaker (inst)", "Scarlet (with Jimmy Page)", "All The Rage", "Criss Cross", "100 Years Ago (piano demo)", "Dancing With Mr D (inst)", "Hide Your Love", and 1973 Glyn Johns mixes of "Silver Train", "Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)", and "Dancing With Mr D". Andrew Oldham OrchestraRolling Stones Songbook ... CD
Decca (UK), 1966. New Copy ... $8.99
Wonderful easy grooves – from an orchestra leader who couldn't read a note of music! During the 60s, Andrew Oldham was probably best known to the world as the flamboyant manager of the Rolling Stones – but during the same period, or at least the earliest stretch of it, he also headed up his own studio orchestra – working with pop arranger David Whittaker to craft some incredibly groovy albums! This one's the ensemble's fourth and final effort – a magical transformation of familiar Rolling Stones numbers into some sweet easy instrumentals – all asparkle with the best styles of mid 60s Brit easy, served up with orchestrations that run from baroque to breezy! Titles include "Blue Turns To Grey", "You Better Move On", "Heart Of Stone", "Time Is On My Side", "The Last Time", "Theme For A Rolling Stone", and "Tell Me". CD

Screamin' Jay HawkinsWhat That Is ... LP
Philips/Third Man, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99
Screamin Jay Hawkins caught at the height of one of his first "revival" periods – the late 60s, when he was opening for the Rolling Stones, and popping out of the same sort of coffin pictured on the cover! The style of the record takes the older R&B mode of Hawkins' 50s singles, and maybe gives it a bit more of a kick with some of the younger blues generation – but in a way that only seems to open up his music more than before. The album was recorded live in a Hollywood club, where Hawkins was clearly trying out the act that was winning him appeal with the new crowds – and players include Lyle Ritz on bass, Plas Johnson on tenor, Earl Palmer on drums, and even a bit of piano from Grahame Bond. Titles include "Ask Him", "Thing Called Woman", "Dig", "I'm Lonely", "What That Is", "Constipation Blues", and "Feast Of The Mau Mau". LP, Vinyl record album

The rare second album from Clydie King – recorded at a time when she was lending her backing vocals to artists like The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, and Humble Pie – but a set that firmly puts Clydie in the lead! King's got an amazing style of singing – deep and raspy at one moment, with key southern soul roots – yet also totally tight and together, too – with a focus that really shines on the album's more upbeat tracks – groovers that almost have an east coast club vibe at times, quite similar to material that Clydie recorded with the group Brown Sugar! Titles include "Rushing To Meet You", "Loving You Is So Easy", "Steal Your Love Away", "Punish Me", "Our Love Is Special", and "Morning Sun". CD

A big crossover moment for Peter Tosh – a set that was issued on the Rolling Stones own label, with a bit of help from Keith and Mick themselves! But if that makes you worry about some clunky effort that tries to blend rock and reggae, you can put all your fears aside – as the set's got all the soulful charm that made Tosh one of the true giants of the 70s – potentially as influential as Bob Marley, especially at the time – and working with rock-solid help from Sly and Robbie on rhythms, and Mao Chung on lead guitar, Fender Rhodes, and even a bit of moog! Tracks include "You Gotta Walk Don't Look Back", "Pick Myself Up", "Soon Come", "Moses The Prophet", "Stand Firm", "Dem Ha Fe Get A Beatin", and "Creation". CD

Atom (Germany), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic UK soul from PP Arnold – the American soul singer who first started out as an Ikette, but really made her mark in England – thanks to some key support from The Rolling Stones and other 60s rockers! Despite the British nature of the material – mostly recorded for the rock-based Immediate label – and despite the fact that production is by Mick Jagger, Andrew Loog Oldham, and others – the sound here is almost in the best US soul mode of the 60s, with full arrangements and sweeping strings that remind us of some of the strongest New York uptown soul of the mid 60s! 2CD set features 25 tracks in all – all from 1967 and 1968 – including one number with Rod Stewart and one with The Small Faces. Titles include "Speak To Me", "Am I Still Dreaming", "To Love Somebody", "Angel Of The Morning", "Would You Believe", "Life Is But Nothing", "First Cut Is The Deepest", "Everything's Gonna Be Alright", "Come Home Baby", and "Groovy". ✨✧ MetersTrick Bag ... LP
Reprise, 1976. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A sweet Cali set from The Meters – one that loses a bit of their rougher roots, yet still holds onto plenty of funk at the same time! By the mid 70s, the New Orleans soul sound had broken out of the underground, was residing happily in mainstream LA. Allen Toussaint already produced a bucketful of albums for Warner Brothers, and The Meters themselves are working in a crossover territory that has them touring with the Rolling Stones and hitting a whole new range of college-type audiences. The group's smoothed things out considerably, but still manages to funk nicely at the best moments – in a warmer way than during the Josie Records years, but still with a groove that's much deeper than most of their contemporaries. Titles are a much a "trick bag" as the title – with a cover of Earl King's "Trick Bag" that features guest vocals by Earl, a remake of "(Doodle Loop) The World is a Little Bit Under the Weather", one of their best from the Josie days, a cover of "Honky Tonk Woman", which we can only assume was played on tour with The Stones – plus the original cuts "Chug A Lug", "Mister Moon", and "Find Yourself". LP, Vinyl record album

Flicknife/Troubadour, 1983. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
The first magnificent pairing of Nikki Sudden and Dave Kusworth – a set that's issued under Nikki's name, but which has all the magical energy of their Jacobites recordings together! There's an instantly timeless feel going on here – almost an indie punk refiguration of the best ideas of The Rolling Stones and other giants of the years before – but stripped down into a personal quality that's far more moving – and which almost makes you feel like you've stumbled upon some lost demo recordings from unknown friends of Mick and Keith. But that's only part of the picture, too – as the album's got a great sense of variety – including some female vocals at a few points – all to grace a great run of tracks that include "Six Hip Princes", "Gold Painted Nails", "Cathy", "Chelsea Embankment", "The Road Of Broken Dreams", "The Only Boy In Heaven", and "English Girls". Great 2CD edition – features early sessions from May of 1982 – with titles that include different versions of "Out Of Egypt", "Every Girl Cuts Me In Half", "Feels So Right", "Bethlehem Castle", "Cathy", "The Angels Are Calling", and "Missionary Boy". ✨✧ VariousCrawling Up A Hill – A Journey Through The British Blues Boom 1966 to 1971 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD set ... Out Of Stock
A heavy little set that looks at the big rise of blues modes on the UK scene in the late 60s – but one that should be thought of more as the sound of rock in transition, rather than a lavish adherence to American blues modes! In fact, half of these groups are ones that you might not think of as blues-based at all – but who, like the Rolling Stones a few years before, drew heavy inspiration from the guitar giants in the US blues scene – yet quickly took their own music in very different directions, and even different than the Stones. There's a quality here that's almost more like a pre-progressive sound at times, but also an evolution from some of the R&B and soul that the mod scene were into too – and the whole thing captures a really exciting, really revolutionary time in British music – along with a big booklet of notes on all the many groups included. The set list is great – not big hits, but lots of overlooked gems – big groups mixed with smaller, forgotten acts – with 56 tracks by artists who include Icarus, Bloodwyn Pig, Killing Floor, Free, Zany Woodruff Operation, Ten Years After, Duster Bennett, The Deviants, Alexis Korner, Dr K's Blues Band, Mike Cooper, Sam Apple Pie, Black Cat Bones, Siren, Steamhammer, Liverpool Scene, Skid Row, Stack Waddy, Heavy Jelly, Jasper, Christine Perfect, Shakey Vick, Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Love Sculpture, and many others.
