Monty AlexanderSunday Night ... CD
Limetree (Germany), 1985. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A nice little set from Monty Alexander – a Sunday Night session recorded with the same group, on the same weekend as his Saturday Night album! Monty Alexander's always great in a trio, but we really love the pianist when he's trying to add a little something extra to the mix – as he does here in a quartet performance that features some nice added percussion from Robert Thomas! The tracks have that warm glow and open flow that Alexander first started bringing to his music in the 70s – with sensitive rhythm work here from Reggie Johnson on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums – but the added percussion really helps things swing at a slightly higher level, giving a gentle kick to some cuts, while Monty's still able to open up with some warmly lyrical lines over the top. Titles include "Old Devil Moon", "Who Cares", "Renewal", "African Bee", "Joyspring", and "More Or Wes". CD

Numero, Late 1970s/1980s/Early 1990s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 32.98
The Numero group dive deeply into the new age underground of the 70s and 80s – moving way past the later, bigger hits on the larger labels – and focusing instead on the kind of homegrown indie material that really hits the right sort of meditative vibe! Sounds within are both acoustic and electric – and you'll recognize a few of the names from other Numero projects – like Iasos or Laraaji – but there's much more work here that goes way deeper, and is presented in the usual Numero sense of sonic exploration – with a hefty booklet of notes that's as dreamy as the music within! Titles include "Night In The Vortex" by David Storrs, "Silent Dream/The Real Dream" by Vernal Equinox, "Sea Of Bliss" by Don Slepian, "Carmel Valley Sunset" by David Casper, "Bethlehem" by Laraaji, "Crystal Cave (Back To Atlantis)" by Upper Astral, "Ocean" by Robert Slap & Suzanne Ghiglia, "Music For Earth Orbit" by Alex Johnson, "Somebodies" by Dervish, "New Snow" by Peter Nothnagle, and "After The Storm" by Georges Boutz. LP, Vinyl record album
(Note: These copies have a very tiny bump on the corner – hardly anything at all, and you might miss it – but we thought we'd mention it, and we're knocking off a few dollars for the bump.)

✨✧ Archie SheppMama Too Tight ... CD
Impulse, 1966. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Growing brilliance from the young Archie Shepp – a record that's not just about Archie's own amazing work on the tenor, but also his keen modern vision as a leader! The combo here is an ensemble that features some of the hippest modernists of the 60s – Roswell Rudd and Grachan Moncur on trombone, Perry Robinson on clarinet, Howard Johnson on tuba, Charlie Haden on bass, and Tommy Turrentine on trumpet – making a rare non-bop appearance here, and further enforcing our already-high estimation of his talents! The style's somewhat in the "new thing" mode of the period, but it's also a bit more tightly arranged too – almost hitting Mingus-like modes for the bigger ensemble – balancing the force of the group together with very free, bold solo impulses from the players. Side one features the extended "Portrait Of Robert Thompson (As A Young Man)" – and side two features "Mama Too Tight", "Theme For Ernie", and "Basheer". CD

✨✧ VariousSoul On Fire – The Detroit Soul Story 1957 to 1977 (3CD set) ... CD
Soul Time (UK), Late 50s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not the complete Detroit soul story, but a set that's even more interesting than that – as the huge package looks at a wealth of lesser-known tracks from the farther reaches of the scene – mostly with a focus on the kinds of underground 60s cuts that made the Motor City so great! A good deal of the work here is from the labels of producer Robert West – who's probably best known for the Lu-Pine label singles, but also worked with other imprints too – a number of which are included here in a package that goes out of its way to present tracks that go way past the usual Motown-styled modes! There's a good deal of group soul work here, and many of the numbers are from the earlier part of the decade, and show a soul scene that still had plenty of grit, despite the later famous Detroit production policy. Also, many of the tracks are presented in a way that features two tracks or more by a single artist in a row – as if you're flipping over both sides of a single – and the box has a huge booklet that really details all the music too! There's 86 tracks in all – including some unissued numbers from the 60s – and the package features work by Ed Robinson, Sax Kari, The Conquerors, The Falcons, Marv Johnson, Tornados, Delores Maxwell, Don Juan & The Vulcans, The Minor Chords, The Rayber Voices, The Knight Hawks, The Fourmost, The Corvells, Gene Martin, Mack Rice, Eddie Floyd, Betty Lavette, Tina Marvel, Just Brothers, Eddie King, The Precisions, Tony & Tyrone, and many others! You might know a few of these tracks – but you'll also find plenty more to discover. CD

✨✧ Lucinda WilliamsRamblin' ... CD
Folkways, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
Classic folk blues and acoustic Americana from Lucinda Williams – her first record for Folkways – recorded at Malaco Studios with just Lucinda's naturally wonderful vocals, 12 string strumming, and 6 string accompaniment by John Grimaudo! Ramblin' finds Lucinda doing passionate, but somehow kind of relaxed renditions of a numbers from blues, folk and traditional canon, numbers by Robert Johnson, Memphis Minnie, Hank Williams, the Carter Family and others. Lucinda was much more celebrated decades later, but nothing she's done works better than the Folkways era for our ears. Includes "Ramblin' On My Mind", "Me And My Chauffer", "Malted Milk Balls", "Disgusted", "Drop Down Daddy", "Jambalaya", "Satisfied Mind" and more. CD

✨✧ Gil Scott-HeronI'm New Here (2LP version) ... LP
XL, 2010. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Heavy, soul-baring lyricism delivered with spiritual resonance and wise authority by Gil Scott-Heron – his first album shot in far too many years, and a direct hit – essential listening for longtime listeners and neophytes alike and a well worthy entry in a legendary career! Scott-Heron is documenting his world as profoundly and poetically as ever here, and the production is built with spare, haunting beats and atmospheric bits of strings, guitar, keys, loose atmospherics and hazy electronics – loosely framing his voice and giving it all the room in needs to carry the mood. Gil sings and speaks with equal authority throughout, and you can hear the years in his voice like never before, giving him the worn edges of the old soul he always evoked. This is a record we're proud to put among his treasured recordings of the 70s and early 80s. Titles include "On Coming From A Broken Home" (Parts 1 & 2), "Your Soul And Mine", "I'll Take Care Of You", "Where Did The Night Go", "Running", "The Crutch" and more, including several interludes that are pretty amazing – captures of conversation that show Gil nearly as charismatic and poetic in "off" moments as he is recording a song. Also includes 2 covers, "Me And The Devil" (the Robert Johnson song) and the title track, Smog/Bill Callahan's "I'm New Here", given a whole new life. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Archie SheppFire Music To Mama Too Tight Revisited ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of crucial albums from Archie Shepp – back to back in a single set! Fire Music is easily one of Archie Shepp's greatest albums, and certainly one of the pivotal points of 60s avant garde jazz! The album features Shepp leading a crack "new thing" line up that includes Ted Curson on trumpet, Marion Brown on alto, Joe Chambers on drums, Reggie Johnson on bass, and the lesser-known Joseph Orange on trombone – all playing in a beautifully poised manner, never too far out and free, but with all the dynamic energy of the best jazz changes of the 60s! There's a vibe here that's similar to some of the Blue Note "new thing" work by players like Grachan Moncur, Jackie McLean, and Tony Williams from the time – but there's a vision that's also wider and deeper, too, given the size of the group and the way they interact. Titles include "Hambone", "Los Olvidados", "Malcolm Malcolm–Semper Malcolm", and an insane cover of "Girl From Ipanema". You can't go wrong with this one – trust us! Mama Too Tight features growing brilliance from the young Archie Shepp – a record that's not just about Archie's own amazing work on the tenor, but also his keen modern vision as a leader! Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Foxy R&B, and a fair bit of soul as well – wonderful work from the previously-untapped Paso and Foxy record labels – headed up by legendary Chicago DJ Richard Stamz! Stamz was a key early force in African-American broadcasting in the Windy City – an important DJ not just in blues and soul, but also a TV figure as well – one who really helped get a heck of a lot of great music started in the early days of soul! This package features some real killers by artists who do a great job of skirting the rough line between blues and soul in Chicago in the 60s – some of whom would record more famously on other labels, like One-Der-Ful, but who really sound great here. The package was put together by the folks who've researched and recounted Stamz colorful life in print – and has a great array of rare music, plus stories of the DJ as well. Titles include "Say You Love Me" by Harold Burrage, "The Buzzard" by Freddie Robinson, "What's The Matter With You Sam" by The Ideals, "Just One More Time" by Loretta Branch, "You Gonna Cry" by Flora D, "I'm Trying" by Lee Shot Williams, "Gittin Along" by Willie Williams with the Howlin Wolf Band, "Goin Home" by Mary Johnson, "Please Love Me" by Harold Burrage, "Romeo Joe (part 1)" by Robert & The Rockin Ravens, and "Garlen's Mambo" by Ze Majestics. ✨✧ Horace Tapscott/Pan Afrikan Peoples ArkestraFlight 17 ... CD
Nimbus, 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious albums ever from pianist Horace Tapscott – a double-length set that has him working with a large lineup of underground musicians from the 70s Los Angeles scene – all united in spirit and power as the Pan-African Peoples Arkestra! Tapscott's piano directs the group strongly – as an extension of the vision that he brought to the late 60s Sonny's Dream album by Sonny Criss – but the music is freer, more spiritual, and often graced with bursts of ensemble energy, balanced by some really tremendous solos from other musicians too! The lineup includes some other key members of the Nimbus Records collective – including Jesse Sharps on saxes and flute, Linda Hill on piano, Adele Sebastian on flute, and Roberto Miranda on bass – and other players include James Andrews and Sabia Matteen on tenor, Archie Johnson and Lester Robertson on trombone, Billy Harris on soprano, Herbert Callies on alto clarinet, and Michael Session on alto. A fantastic set, and one that only tells part of its story with the title – as the set features female composers and artists throughout – including some who would go on to become giants in their field! The album is maybe most noteworthy for presenting some of the first recordings ever of Laurie Anderson – delivering early versions of "Time To Go" and "New York Social Life" – both with help from the great Scott Johnson, who plays guitar, organ, and tambura! But that's just the tip of the iceberg, as there's all sorts of amazing things going on – including electronics from Donald Buchla on "Music Of The Spheres" by Johanna Beyer – plus "Bye Bye Butterfly" by Pauline Oliveros, "World Rhythms" by Annea Lockwood, "Points" by Ruth Anderson, "Appalachian Grove 1" by Laurie Spiegel, and "I Could Sit Here All Day" by Megan Roberts. Milestone/OJC, 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
A classic batch of Bay Area Brazilian grooves – recorded in the sweet breezy electric style of the Fantasy studios, and featuring the vocals of the lovely Flora Purim in the lead! The session's got a great mix of Brazilian and American fusion players – including Airto (of course!), Ron Carter, George Duke, Egberto Gismonti, Alphonso Johnson, Robertinho Silva, Hermeto Pascoal, and Ndugu Leon Chancler. Pascoal's reed work is a very nice treat, especially over the warm keyboards of George Duke. Purim's voice is as wonderful as ever, and the album's got lots of nice numbers, like "Ina's Song", "Andei (I Walked)", "Time's Lie", and "Open Your Eyes You Can Fly". CD

✨✧ Mary Lou WilliamsBlack Christ Of The Andes ... CD
Smithsonian Folkways/Saba, 1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
A landmark album – and one of the best records you'll ever find by Mary Lou Williams! The record's a mixture of jazz and spiritual themes, and it features Mary Lou's piano set in some super-hip jazz arrangements that include players like Grant Green, Budd Johnson, Larry Gales, Melba Liston, Ben Tucker, and Percy Heath. The bass and piano work is amazing, and many tracks have a dark groove that's very subtle, but very compelling. About half the tunes feature hip choral vocalizing – in the mode of some of the Donald Byrd or Max Roach albums from the same time – mostly handled by the group of Howard Roberts. Includes the classic groover "A Grand Nite For Swinging", plus "A Fungus Amongus", "Anima Christi", "Miss DD", "The Devil", "It Ain't Necessarily So", and "My Blue Heaven". Great stuff all around – and even better than we're describing it! CD adds some extra tracks to the original recording, too – with titles that include "Koolbonga", "Forty Five Degree Angle", "Nicole", "Chunka Lunka", and "Praise The Lord". CD
