Rob ChapmanPsychedelia & Other Colours (hardcover) ... Book
Faber & Faber (UK), 2015. New Copy ... $4.99 36.00
An incredibly dense book on the psychedelic scene of the 60s – a huge volume that not only looks at an impressive array of music, but also the wider trippy culture, too – but all with a level of text that goes far beyond most of the thinner volumes on the period! Many of the chapter titles refer to key musical texts, but then quickly extrapolate from those moments – soaring out from "I Am The Blackgold Of The Sun", "The Greta Garbo Home For Wayward Boys & Girls", and "Painting With Light" – and looking at psychedelia on both sides of the Atlantic in the 60s, with lots of surprising insights along the way. Despite a very vivid cover, the book itself is all text, no images – a hefty 638 pages, hardcover, and a very deep read! Book

Rob Franken ElectrificationFunctional Stereo Music (Together/Six Seven Eight/Don't Stop/Colours & Images/Absorbed Love/Blue Sky Fingers) (3CD set) ... CD
678 Records (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99
An amazing package of rare work on Fender Rhodes – a 3CD set that brings together six full albums that were recorded in the 70s, but never saw the light of day until vinyl issued in recent years! Pianist Rob Franken is totally great – maybe one of the hippest cats on the Dutch scene of the 70s when it came to the Fender Rhodes! Rob's a master of the instrument here – playing it jazzily, but also with this open flow that's really wonderful – and which really makes the best use of the instrument's potential, and doesn't drown it in too much jamming, which could sometimes be the case with other European musicians who handled the instrument! Instead, Franken lets the space between the notes do as much as the notes themselves – which really keeps things soulful throughout – and although most of the cuts feature an augmented trio, sometimes with added percussion or keyboards – a few of the tracks feature Ferdinand Povel on flute and tenor, and Jiggs Whigham on trombone. But even without the horns, the keys are more than enough – as they step out and soar on a whopping 70 tracks in all – including a few bonus tracks too! CD

Duke, 2013. New Copy ... $5.99 26.95
The future of jazz is now, even if it's in the past – as the editors here bring together a selection of essays that document the forward-thinking movements in jazz from the mid 60s onwards – some of which are only getting full appreciation all these many years later! There's a nice variety of subjects from an equally nice variety of writers – and essays include "Jeanne Lee's Voice" by Eric Porter, "Days Of Bread & Roses" by Mark Ribot, "Experimental Music In The Academy In New York City" by Tamar Barzel, "The Antiquity Of The Avant Garde" by John Szwed, "Black Jazz In The Digital Age" by Greg Tate, and "Ancient To The Future" by members of the AACM, including Nicole Mitchell, Matana Roberts, Don Moye, Wadada Leo Smith, and Roscoe Mitchell. There's also a section on the "Jazz Photography Of Thomas King" – and the whole thing is 312 pages, softcover, with some black and white photographs. Book

Rob JacobsRob Jacobs ... LP
International Anthem, 2015. New Copy ... $11.99 23.99
A really unusual early album on the International Anthem label – proof that the company was tuned into genre-crossing music right from the start! Rob Jacobs is a singer, but one who's not really tied to one particular style – as some tracks have maybe the lyrical focus of rock or folk, while others have Jacobs using his voice as a more creative instrument – like some of the more experimental singers in 70s jazz, particularly in the more avant modes – or maybe even like Meredith Monk! Instrumentation is varied, too – often somewhat intimate, in ways that have the more unusual crestings of the voice getting plenty of room in the forefront – and almost all delivered by Rob himself, in a mix of acoustic or electric styles. Titles include "The Slyman", "Wordless Incantation", "Walking Outside & It's Dark", "Your Sleeves Are Red & Glistening Also", "For Gladys", "Salt Of The Earth", and "Golden Flower". ✨✧ Rob MazurekDesert Encrypts Vol 1 ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99
A really beautiful record from Rob Mazurek – and one of his most different recordings in years! The set's a quartet date, recorded live – and has especially strong input from Kris Davis, who plays both piano and prepared piano – using the acoustic instrument to inflect the music of Mazurek in a really different way! Also great is bassist Ingegbrigt Haker Flaten – always a great presence, but maybe more conventionally swinging at times here than usual, if that's possible. Although the bass may well be driven strongly by the drums of Chad Taylor – a longtime partner of Rob's, but also really showing the growth he's experienced since their more frequent projects from ten to twenty years back. Mazurek himself is almost understated, but in a way that lets the whole group work strongly as a whole – and Rob plays piccolo, trumpet, and modular synth! CD

Rob MazurekLove Waves Ecstatic Charge ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99
An amazing piece of music from Rob Mazurek – and a real testament to the growth as an artist that he's been experiencing in the Marfa scene! The album is all electronic, but has a different vibe than some of Rob's electronic work in Chicago and Brazil – at one level maybe more visual, as it's clearly tied to visual sources – but at another level more structured with a narrative sensibility – so that the progression of sonic elements moves along in a way that really makes sense. At some level, we might even be tempted to call a few of these pieces "songs", although they're still very abstract, and rarely tuneful – just these nicely focused passages created by Mazurek on a modular synth, but in ways that really move past both the regular uses of the instrument, and his more familiar sounds. Titles include "Wave Charge", "Ecstatic", "Love Waves", "Charged Waves", and "Wave Static". CD

Rob MazurekMother Ode ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2014. New Copy ... $7.99 12.99
Rob Mazurek has always been more of a multi-instrumentalist instead of just a cornet player – but on this amazing solo set, he really pushes the boundaries even further – by taking up a huge host of different elements and different sounds! That soaring, spacious horn is still in the lead – a legacy that Rob seems to have inherited from 70s Miles Davis, but taken to even trippier territory – but the record also features flute, electronics, maracas, and bells – as well as weird objects like books, boxes, and apples! Mazurek uses a bit of distortion at times, which really helps unlike things resonate together – and the set's easily some of his most personal, evocative music to date. Titles include "Toward New Light", "Quiet The Thunder Bells", "The Breath Of Life You Gave To Me", "You Were Born With Sun In Your Eyes", and "Toward Enlightenment". CD

Essiebons/Soundway (UK), 1977. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The second album from Ghanaian funk singer, composer and arranger Rob – issued for the first time ever outside of Ghana, thanks to the deep diggers at Soundway! Rob sings in English throughout – and there's a slinky, slow-cooking, kinda strange groove on most of the numbers – a mix of funk with lots of offbeat, oddball touches – of the sort that some folks these days might dub Afro Psych – but which was just pretty darn experimental back in the day! Rhythms are heavy on guitar, bass, and drums – and plenty of offbeat percussion – all topped with some great heavy horns too. The memorable title track is one of the most unique Afro Funk songs you could ever hope to hear – , with dexterous opening horn blasts, clattering bell-like percussion, and undeniably carnal English vocals – and the rest of the album's pretty darn amazing too! Other titles include "Loose Up Yourself" "Not The End", "I've Got To See You Again Lord", "He Shall Live In You", "But You", "Bargain" and "Back On You". LP, Vinyl record album

Really haunting duets from these two California reedman – both playing woodwinds in a variety of formats, but with an especially strong emphasis on saxophones! The tunes have this open, airy quality that's different than most free improvisations – more meditative and spiritual, with an inherent sense of structure – and often these flowing waves of energy that emanate nicely between both musicians. There's a vibe that's almost a bit like some of the more introspective music of the great Bob Downes – but with more of an American sense of soul, as well – and titles include "Wind In The Trees", "Nail In The Wall", "Picture Paintings", "Begin To Look Around", and "Long & Wide Doors". Bold work from saxophonist Rob Brown – a set with some very Ornette-like tones at times, but also a rich sort of energy that's all its own! The group is wonderful here – trumpet from Roy Campbell, bass from William Parker, and drums from Hamid Drake – the last two of whom set up these incredible rhythms for the record – tentative one minute, pulsing forward the next – really driving the horns with a strong sort of inspiration – giving them focus and drive, and really lifting the spirits of the whole set! Brown and Campbell often blow together on the heads, then break out in rich-voiced solos of their own – and in Rob plays both alto sax and flute on the record. Titles include "Blues Thicket", "Legroom", "Dawning", "Trio Unsprung", and "Islands Of Space". CD

Fender Rhodes and vibes – a combination that always sounds fantastic, but which maybe sounds especially great here in a rare 70s session from Dutch keyboard legend Rob Franken! Rob's usually fantastic, no matter what the setting – but here, he's working on a set of spacious grooves that get plenty of great tones and colors from the vibes of Wolfgang Schulter – who works alongside Rob in a groove that's right up there with some of the best MPS funky electric jazz from the early 70s! About half the tracks on the set were written by German pianist Michael Naura – who himself was also doing some great Fender Rhodes work in the 70s – and titles include "Call", "Samba For Sander", "Song For Josef", "Barracuda", "Brown Out", "Concensus", and "Serenade For Myself". Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic meeting of the musical minds – coming together here in a set of live improvisations recorded at a record store in Greece! The setting's an unusual one, and the music is too – sounds that really move past the usual for all three players, but especially David Grubbs and Mats Gustafsson – both of whom seem very comfortable here in some of the sonic territory that we normally hear more from Rob Mazurek! Grubbs' guitar is quite different than on some of his own records – especially the solo acoustic moments – and Mats reminds us that he's not just a hell of a saxophonist, but also a master of many other ways to disturb the flow of air – delivering work here on flute, fluteophone, and live electronics – the last of which is matched with more electronics from Rob Mazurek, who also plays piccolo trumpet and wood flute too. Every song has a different shape and texture, which is a further testament to both the sensitivities of the musicians, and their sympathies with each other – and titles include "Not In A Hall Of Mirrors", "Creep Mission", "City Stones Sleep", and "Goats & Hollers". The funky Rob way is a massive one at that – a new path into Afro Funk modes for the 70s, with a groove that's made this set a collectors classic for decades! The group is tighter than most, yet more skittish too – percussion rattling alongside basslines that have these echoey qualities that go deep and dark, but with more of a soul-based style than some of the psych-influence work from Zimbabwe and other scenes of the time! Spare electronic bits come into play with the keyboards, guitar, drums, and bass – but at a level that's never overdone – just enough to keep things slightly offbeat and unsettling, while Rob himself grooves away in the lead! It's almost impossible to describe in words what makes this set so unique – but one drop of the needle will have you hooked for life – thanks to cuts that include "Funky Rob Way", "Forgive Us All", "Boogie On", "Just One More Time", "More", and "Your Kiss Stole Me Away". ✨✧ Rob MazurekPsychotropic Electric Eel Dreams IV ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An extended electronic piece from Rob Mazurek – one that features no trumpet at all, and just has Rob working on a modular synth, which he uses to rework the sound source of electric eels recorded in Brazil! The approach is fantastic – often as breathy and sound-building as Mazurek's longer pieces in an acoustic setting, but moodier and eerier too – maybe in part because the music was originally created for an installation, but stands here more than strongly enough on its own! It's hard to imagine that eels might even have such qualities, given that they live in such a sound-deadening environment – but Rob's really used their inspiration to create some really great music on his own, further expanding his electronic palette at a time when he's also been giving us some great acoustic sounds. The set features two long pieces – "Psychotropic Electric Eel Dreams IV A" and "Psychotropic Electric Eel Dreams IV B". CD

Rob Schneiderman's name on a record is always a reason for us to pick it up – as he's not only a tight pianist, who can play with plenty of rhythmic soul – he's also a hell of a leader, and always has a great way of putting a group together! That's definitely the case here, as Rob works with Brian Lynch on trumpet, Ralph Moore on tenor, Gerald Cannon on bass, and Pete Van Nostrand on drums – a group who burn nicely, but without ever overstating themselves at all – just the right balance for the excellent array of original tunes brought by Schneiderman to the set! Some numbers have Rob coming down hard on the left end of the keyboard, others are more lyrical and fluid – and together, the songs round things out beautifully – on titles that include "Footloose Freestyle", "Left Coast Lullaby", "The Lion's Tale", "Tailspin", "Tone Twister", and "Windblown". Ropeadope, 2002. Used ... $6.99
An incredible record – far greater than we even expected! The setup is simple: King Britt and his crew remix the tapes from 2001's experimental jazz jam session by a trio of fellow Philadelphians – drummer Ahmir Thompson (The Roots), jazz bassist Christian McBride, and keyboardist Uri Caine. Britt's really blown his top here – taking the original album (great in its own right), and turning it into a set of cosmic grooves that bear almost no relation to the initial work, yet still keep its soulful heart. The depth of the project is stunning – way more than just simple remix tricks, and a whole new level of expression that shows why Philly is fast becoming the music capitol of the 21st Century. Includes work by Rob Yancey, Charlie Dark, Phillip Charles, Oba Funke, Vikter Duplaix, The Randy Weston Experience, DJ Ghe, and Britt himself – with titles that include "South Street", "Paul Edwards The Orange Line (lle lfe)", "(Re)Moved (Oba Funke Far Re-Moved dub)", "Diamond Street", "Philadelphia Experiment (rmx)", "Delaware Avenue", "Miles Hit (Rob Life mix)", "Broad & Cecil B Moore", "Brown Street", and "Groover The III (the theme to massagejawn.com)". A fantastic step in the continuing evolution of the "Chicago Underground" project of trumpeter Rob Mazurek and drummer Chad Taylor – soaring out here in a set that's full of spiritual energy and a level of imagination that even surpasses their classic recordings from years ago! Mazurek blows piccolo trumpet, but also adds in some electronics – and Taylor is mindblowing on drums, playing with a style that's open, but always gently swinging – and matched with some synth bass from Josh Johnson, who also plays organ and piano on the set. The mighty guitarist Jeff Parker is the last member of the group – and like Mazurek, he's really come a long way in the past decade, and the quartet work together here at a level that has us falling in love with the Chicago Underground all over again. Moody at times, but never too loose – and titles include "Orgasm", "Good Days", "Batida", "All The Bells", "Unique Spiral", "Lome", "Westview", and "Strange Wing". CD

Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
One of the strongest jazz albums we've heard from drummer Mike Clark in years – a set that burns right from the start, and really lives up to the heavyweight lineup that includes Donald Harrison on alto, Rob Dixon on tenor, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Antonio Farao on piano, and Christian McBride on bass! The tunes are live, and roll out of the gate with tremendous strength and sympathy between the players – and Farao's piano is an especially strong force next to the bass of McBride – this rich undercurrent that just seems to lift everyone up, and help them find their best voice as they roll into the flow. Dixon and Farao contributed some great original material to the set – and titles include "Of Infinity", "Past Lives", "If We Must Die", "Lucky No 7", and "Black Inside". CD

Trojan (UK), 2007. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A far reaching project from the Subliminal Kid – a batch of remixes, versions and reworkings that are far from subliminal! DJ Spooky takes on the Trojan catalog and cooks up a batch of 21st century versions of the heaviest of the heavy cuts from all over the Jamaican music map! Some of the tracks here are radical re-cuts of the tune, going far past the traditional dub approach and creating entirely new rhythms, while others hew closer to the originals, but still adding a new spin to the proceedings. Spooky's heady approach unifies the whole affair for a new school natty dread party! 14 numbers in all, including "Creation Rebel" by DJ Spooky meets the Mad Professor and Rob Swift, "Mr Brown (rmx)" by Bob Marley, "Revolution Disco Dub" by DJ Spooky meets Tapper Zukie, 2 versions of "Dis Poem Burns Babylon" by Mutabaruka, one with the Observers and the other with the Upsetters, "Under Mi Sensi (rmx)" by Barrington Levy, "Babylon Burning Dub" by DJ Spooky meets the Observers and "Dub Of The Traveller (bonus beats)" by Scientist. Family Of SwedeFamily Album ... CD
Cordial (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $12.99
A long-overdue full length album from Family Of Swede – not a group from Stockholm, but a funky soul combo that worked in Oakland in the late 70s, but only ever managed to issue one single at the time! This set brings together a nice batch of unreleased music by the group – finally giving them a foothold in the legacy of Bay Area soul, and a chance to show off their great talent for both warm harmonies and more grooving rhythms – often done with a mode that's more east coast soul than some of their Cali contemporaries! We actually like the midtempo tracks here best – as the group seems to have a special sort of sparkle in that mode – gently stepping with a sense of warmth and sophistication that's totally top shelf, and which hardly sounds like work that has sat in the can for the past few decades. Titles include "Sad Lonely Feeling (70s version)", "Where Are You", "Living From Day To Day", "Life", "I Got To Move On", "Everybody Must Pay", "The Girl's Alright With Me", "Set You Free (short version)", and "When Tomorrow Comes". A tight little set that's never too wild – given the sharpness that trumpeter Maynard Ferguson can bring to the way he arranges a group! The album's one from a lost point between the two bigger recording moments of Ferguson's career, and has a sound that steps off nicely from his Roulette Records sessions – that same sense of modern recreation of large ensemble modes – with a very strong sense of color and tone, and an inherent rhythmic energy that still never gets in the way of the bolder flourishes of the players! Musicians include Willie Maiden on tenor, Lanny Morgan on alto and flute, Don Rader and Nat Pavone on trumpets, Rob McConnell on valve trombone, and Mike Abene on piano – and titles include "On Green Dolphin Street", "Macarena", "Airegin", "Tinsel", "Three More Foxes", and "This Nite". G UnitBeg For Mercy (Clean LP) ... LP
G Unit/Interscope, 2003. Near Mint- 2LP ... $7.99
We've been fans of 50 since we first heard the brilliant "How To Rob", and nothing about the massive, unbelievable level of popularity he's achieved, or the myriad of underground singles and mixtapes has done has done a damn thing to change our minds about him or his G Unit crew. With much less at stake with this G Unit debut than what was awaiting the Get Rich, Or Die Trying LP, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks and the crew just do what they do here. It's hit and miss, but the best of these kind of carefree, loose, and hell, almost nostalgic ghetto anthems makes for what would be a guilty pleasure – except we don't feel the least bit guilty about it. Includes "Stunts 101", "My Buddy", "I'm So Hood", "Groupie Love", "Footprints", "Eye For An Eye", "Beg For Mercy", "Lay You Down", "Gangsta S***", "I Smell P****" and lots more. Astral Spirits, 2020. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99
A double-length set that showcases the ever-growing, ever-evolving talents of drummer Quin Kirchner – working here in a variety of settings with help from some other great talents on the Chicago scene! Most of these tunes have a core sense of structure – and even when Quin is improvising more freely, he still finds a way to swing – working here on conventional drums, other percussion instruments, and even a bit of kalimba too – alongside a mix of players that includes Nick Broste on trombone, Nate Lepine on tenor and flute, Nick Mazzarella on alto, Jason Stein on bass clarinet, Greg Ward on alto, Rob Clearfield on piano, and Matt Ulery on bass. Many numbers have a spacious, ambitious vibe – almost spiritual jazz, of a quality that really has us respecting Kirchner more than ever – and the double space of the album is really needed to allow this majestic message the room to unfold properly. A brilliant tribute to the youthful talents of Barrington Levy – a set of sweetly soulful numbers that were mostly recorded when Levy was in his late teens! The package is overstuffed with goodness from these key Levy years – music that often moves through the groove with a really laidback vocal, yet still has this sharp bite underneath – that special mix that always made Barrington so great. And although young here, there's still a depth to his vocals that few other older acts can touch – a heartfelt, sometimes heartbreaking quality that really comes through. A really wonderful collection of music from the legendary bassist William Parker – and one that finally brings a light to an under-illuminated side of his talents – his work with different singers over his long and creative career, all collected together here in a great 3CD set! Make no mistake – this isn't a "best of", or anything like that – as a good deal of music appears here for the first time ever, and lots more of the tracks are from albums that have long vanished from the record racks – which makes the whole thing almost like a new album from Parker overall. Players include Parker on bass, Yuko Fujiyama and Eri Yamamoto on piano, Rob Brown on alto, Steve Swell on trombone, and a number of others – including nearly a full disc with music by Parker's Orchestra – and as you'd imagine, the mood and style varies a bit from track to track, but is all wonderfully tied together by Parker's detailed notes inside. Singers include Leena conquest, Ernie Odom, Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay, Lisa Skolov, Ellen Christi, Mola Sylla, Andrea Wolper, Fay Victor, and Omar Payano – and the set is an incredible testimony to Parker's great talents. Dmitry SamarovMusic To My Eyes (hardcover) ... Book
Tortoise Books, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 23.99
A beautiful little book from one of the more inspired creative talents on the Chicago scene – writer/artist Dmitry Samarov, who's always got a talent for getting to the heart of the city – and for being very open about what matters, and why! This book is Dmitry's love letter to the Chicago music scene – and maybe music in general – and the volume mixes both Samarov's drawings and words, as he makes his way through shows, clubs, bars, and other points in the Windy City – all while also stopping to take us further back in time, to sounds that inspired him at an earlier age – all with a voice that's very honest and down to earth, and a bit of a change from the usual rock criticism you might read. The hardcover book looks like a little sketchbook, but it's much bigger than that – over 250 pages, with drawings throughout – covering subjects as wide-ranging as Peter Brotzmann, Neko Case, Mavis Staples, Marc Maron, James Blood Ulmer, David Yow, Handsome Family, Low, The Gories, Silver Jews, Joe Jackson, Rob Mazurek, Eleventh Dream Day, Mekons, Evan Dando, Shellac, Mission Of Burma, and countless others – including some film and literary talents as well. Sublime sounds from the legendary Jonny Teupen – the harpist best known for his freaky sides for MPS, heard here in an earlier set of bossa nova tunes! The approach is quite unique, and really warmly wonderful – Jonny's sweetly lyrical lines on harp, mixed with gentle bossa rhythms, and topped with cool vocals that often have a breezy, scatting sort of sound! Rob Pronk plays piano on the set, and also sings a bit too – and the female vocals are handled by Blanche Birdsong, who's got a nicely sweet sound. The great Shake Keane is also on the album, playing a bit of flugelhorn – although the notes credit him as Leonard Blech – and the whole thing was produced by German groovemeister Berry Lipman! Funky soul from Witchita, Kansas – an unlikely locale, but home to some really great music – courtesy of the Smart brothers, and their ultra-hip club! This wonderful entry in the Eccentric Soul series from Numero really brings that lost scene to life – telling the tale of the brothers, their club, and some of the wickedly funky artists that graced their stage – a host of obscure groups, singers, and instrumentalists who really made Kansas cook, back in the day! The groove here is plenty darn hard – as raw as some of the best funky 45s you might find from points north, warmed up with occasional southern soul elements – and always produced with rough-and-ready vibe that gets to the heart of the grit right away. Fantastic work from two different years of this important German Jazz Festival – material that provides a great live complement to some of the best studio jazz recordings of the late 60s European scene – such as those coming from the MPS label, and some of the record companies in Paris and London! The vibe here is mostly straight, but there are plenty of currents of modern, and maybe just a bit of free – and the set's especially great in illustrating the sort of unique groupings and musical moments that can make the jazz festival scene so rewarding! Material from 1967 includes three long tracks by the group of saxophonist Klaus Doldinger with organist Ingfried Hoffmann; a long performance from a big band led by Kurt Edelhagen, with work from trumpeters Shake Keane and Jimmy Deuchar, tenorists Wilton Gaynair and Karl Drewo, and altoist Derek Humble; four tracks by a quartet led by trumpeter Dusko Goykovich, with Bent Jaedig on tenor; two long improvisations from a group that features Manfred Schoof on trumpet, Gerd Dudek on tenor, Alexander Von Schlippenbach on piano, and Jaki Liebezeit on drums; one track by a quartet with Ted Curson on trumpet and Nick Bridnola on soprano sax; four long cuts by the Clarke Boland Sextet, with Sahib Shihab on flute and baritone, Ake Persson on trombone, and Idrees Sulieman on trumpet; a sweet large group led by organist Ingfried Hoffmann, and a few other hip cuts too. 1968 features work by a sextet led by bassist Peter Trunk, with Shake Keane on flugelhorn, Jiggs Whigham on trombone, and Rob Pronk on piano; four tracks by the Clarke Boland Big Band, with Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor, and Sahib Shihab on baritone; two cuts by the twin tenor group of Hank Mobley and Johnny Griffin; a vocal performance by Jon Hendricks with a Clarke Boland group with Johnny Griffin in the lead; twin trombones from the Slide Hampton and Ake Persson Quintet; hip work from the trio of pianist George Gruntz, bassist Henri Texier, and drummer Daniel Humair; a number of tight tracks from the Maynard Ferguson big band, with Pete King on tenor; and two shorter trio tracks from Joachim Kuhn. The legendary Nat Adderley is definitely in good company here – a group with excellent work on alto from Antonio Hart – a player who comes off in a very different way than the famous alto of Nat's late brother, Cannonball! Antonio seems to open up some nicely dark currents in Adderley's music – underscored by the piano work of Rob Bargard, who can do a great job of shading things in from below – while the whole group moves with great rhythm work from the team of Walter Booker on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Tunes include two great Bargard originals – "Rob's New Tune" and "War Zone" – plus versions of "Rwanda", "Sermonette", "Corcovado", and "Unit Seven". CD

✨✧ G UnitBeg For Mercy ... LP
G Unit/Interscope, 2003. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
✨✧ Abstract OrchestraMadvillain Vol 2 (with bonus download) ... LP
ATA (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great take on the music of Madvillain – that famous collaboration between Madlib & MF Doom – served up here in a mostly instrumental mode that's heavy on funk and jazz! You'll definitely recognize the tunes in the set, but the presentation is very different – almost as if someone's gone back to the music, stripped it down to core samples, then worked those back up again with a new sort of energy! The group's directed by Rob Mitchell – clearly the genius behind the whole project – and solos are by James Russell on tenor and flute, Simon Bobby Beddoe on trumpet, Jim Corry on alto, and George Cooper on piano and keyboards. Titles include "Meat Grinder", "Eye", "Figaro", "Can't Reform Em", "Madmix 3", "Rainbows", "Fire In The Hole", "Rhinestone Cowboy", "Operation Lifesaver", and "Borrowed Time". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Chicago Underground QuartetGood Days (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Astral Spirits, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Barrington Levy/Scientist & Prince Jammy/Viceroys/Tristan PalmaLinval Thompson Trojan Dancehall Albums Collection (Poor Man Style/Scientist & Jammy Strike Back/We Must Unite/Settle Down Girl) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Four Trojan Records albums, all produced by Linval Thompson – and featuring some bonus tracks too! First up is Poor Man Style – a gem of a record from Barrington Levy – done in that laidback, easy-stepping style that always worked perfectly for the singer's vocals! Linval Thompson produced, and he brings in all these cool touches around the edges – early dancehall modes that are nicely understated, and which still maybe resonate more with the roots generation than later crossover hits – a righteous vibe that makes the whole album simmer beautifully all the way through! Titles include "She Is The Best Girl", "Don't Give Up", "Sensimella", "True Love", "Poorman Style", "This Little Boy", "Rob & Gone", "I Can't Wait Too Long", "Man Give Up", and "I Love I Love You". Next is Scientist & Jammy Strike Back – a record in which Scientist and Prince Jammy look an awful lot like Star Wars characters on the cover – but with grooves that are every bit as deep as their other dub classics from the time – completely amazing from conception to execution! If anything, the stars might be the perfect place for the music – given that the sounds here are very open, spacious, and way-out – full of as much echo as attack, at a level that reminds us that the pair are maybe some of the most minimalist of the dub generation! Rhythms are by the Roots Radics, but are always nice and spare – and there's plenty of splash and electro echo to link together the space between the notes – on titles that include "Flash Gordon Meets Luke Skywalker", "Crushing Of The Stormtroopers", "The Princess Takes Her Revenge", "Buck Rogers In The Black Hole", "Death Of Mr Spock", and "Storming The Death Star". Next is We Must Unite – a tremendous album from The Viceroys – a Jamaican vocal trio that we'd rank right up there with The Paragons and Melodians, and who work in this beautiful message-oriented mode next to wicked production from Linval Thompson! The record's got some slight electro-styled touches at the edge – used gently next to slow-tripping rhythms – while the trio step out with these warm harmonies that really bring a lot to the lyrics of the songs – a righteous batch of tracks that include "We Must Unite", "The Intelligence Of Her Mind", "Come Closer My Love", "They Can't Stop Us Now", and "Rising On The Strength Of Jah". Singer Tristan Palma follows in a very similar mode, but as a solo lead – on the well-crafted Settle Down Girl, also produced by Linval Thompson! Titles include "Settle Down Girl", "Run Around Woman", "Losted My Wife", "Don't Make Me Cry", "Come Turn Me On", and "Rosie Bell". CD also features bonus tracks – "If I Didn't Want Your Loving (12" mix)" and "Loving Version" by The Melodians – and "Settle Down Girl (12" mix)", and "Settle Down Girl Version" by Tristan Palma. CD

✨✧ William Parker/In Order To SurviveLive/Shapeshifter ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2019. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
William Parker works here with his excellent In Order To Survive quartet – a fantastic lineup that features Rob Brown on alto sax, Cooper-Moore on piano, and Hamid Drake on drums – a very fluid, very well-matched group who are able to follow Parker in his farthest musical explorations! Tracks are all long, and relatively free – but as with Parker's bass over the decades, there's always this sense of inherent logic that comes through – possibly his strong spirit which unites the players, even indirectly – but also just a proud presence that never seems to let us down. The music was all recorded live on a single night at Shapeshifter Lab in Brooklyn – and titles include "Demons Lining The Halls Of Justice", "Eternity", "In Order To Survive", "Newark", and the long "Eternal Is The Voice Of Love" suite. ✨✧ Steve Swell's Kende DreamsHommage A Bartok ... CD
Silkheart (Switzerland), 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A tribute to Bela Bartok from the great trombonist Steve Swell – but a record that's very much in the spirit of all of the other fantastic records that Steve's been giving us! There's nothing too compositional here – the record is all original music, not versions of Bartok pieces – but the legendary avant classical figure would certainly appreciate the evocative tones and strong use of space from the group – a sublime quintet that also features Rob Brown on alto, Connie Crothers on piano, William Parker on bass, and Chad Taylor on drums! With a lineup like that, it's hard to miss – and these guys really knock it out of the park – on long, moody numbers that include "Roswellian Folk Song", "Lent Oh", "Ultima", "Attack Of The Mikrokosmos", "Bartok Screams", and "After SQ4". Decca/Rural Routes, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great look back at the early years of Ernest Tubb – a set that was recorded at the end of the 50s, and which features Ernest presenting new stereo versions of all his early country classics! The updates are wonderful, and lose nothing at all from the sound of the originals – and backing by the Texas Troubadours is tighter than ever – a perfect understated balance for the unique phrasing that always made Tubb one of the standouts, right from the start! Titles include two dozen classics, without a clunker in the bunch – tracks that include "Walkin The Floor Over You", "There's A Little Bit Of Everything In Texas", "When The World Has Turned You Down", "I'll Get Along Somehow", "Slippin Around", "Don't Rob Another Man's Castle", "Carless Driftin", "Tomorrow Never Comes", "You Nearly Lose Your Mind", "Though The Days Were Only Seven", and "Let's Say Goodbye Like We Said Hello". ✨✧ Greg FoatDreaming Jewels ... CD
Athens Of The North (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The funkiest record in years from the great Greg Foat – a set that moves away from some of the more open, meditative sounds of other recent albums – and has Greg returning to the kind of grooves that first made us fall in love with his music! Foat plays Fender Rhodes throughout – and the album's got lots of great rhythms from the drums of Malcolm Catto and Clark Tracey, and the added percussion of Eric Young – whose congas kick things up fantastically next to the heavy bass of Phillip Achille. There's also some strong horn work throughout too – tenor from Binker Golding, trumpet from Trevor Walker, and both soprano and tenor from Rob Mach – players who are used in individual, spacious ways – and not as the more familiar horn section approach to funk – which skews the whole album much more strongly in a jazz-based direction. Titles include "Eric's Breakdown", "The Door Into Summer", "Kushiro River", "Sapphire Dreams", "Lake Kussharo", and "Not That It Makes Any Difference". CD

Veki (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Hackney Colliery Band really open the doors wide here – more than living up to the promise of the collaborations in the title – as the set features guest work from a range of artists that includes Bugge Wesseltoft, Mulatu Astatke, keyboardist James Taylor, Rob Auton, Angelique Kido, and many others! The core sound of the group still drives most of the tracks – strong rhythms from Olly Blackman and Luke Christie on drums – both very strong forces in the sound – topped with trumpet work from Steve Pretty and the other brass members of the group – but in ways that still allow the guests to dip their special talents into the mix. Christie, Pretty, and Blackman handled most of the arrangements – and titles include "Mm", "Why Yellow", "Netsanet", "Crushing Lactic", "Derashe", "Climbing Up My Own Life Until I Die", "What's Gone Before", and "Ricochet". Bassist Ron McClure's a might generous leader – as he sets the sound up with a really rich vibe right from the start, but also lets his other quartet members really get some time to shine in the spotlight! The album's awash in great tones from Anthony Ferrara on tenor, and Rob Block on piano and guitar – the latter of whom shifts instruments on different tracks, which adds a further level of color palette to the album! Ferrara's especially great – bold, thoughtful, and very creative when he's in the lead – and the group's completed by work from Pete Zimmer on drums. Block, McClure, and Ferrara all contributed a fair bit of original material to the set – and titles include "Deep Sea Urban Planning", "Lucky Sunday", "What's Due", "To Begin", "Mending Ties", "Quiet Life", and "You & The Salt". A beautiful love letter to contemporary Brooklyn – originally commissioned by BAM, as part of a longer piece that included narration, animation, and paintings – but a work that stands more than strongly here on its own! The music has a wonderful mix of themes – sometimes straight, sometimes a bit more abstract, to the point of illustration – played by a shifting lineup of younger musicians who really deliver on the promise of Darcy James Argue's compositions – a group that includes John Ellis on tenor sax, Rob Wilkerson on alto, Ryan Keberle on trombone, Matt Holman on trumpet, Nadje Noordhuis on flugelhorn, and Sebatian Noelle on guitar. ✨✧ Willem Breuker KollektiefA Paris/Summer Music ... CD
Marge (France), 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great Parisian recording from the legendary Willem Breuker – pulled from the most inventive years of his legendary group of Dutch avant musicians! The set captures the maestro at his best – working with a classic lineup of the Kollektief that includes Leo Cuypers on piano and vocals, Maarten Van Norden on saxes, Boy Raayamkers on trumpet, and some great drum work from Rob Verdurmen – all holding together beautifully with the offbeat mix of modern and traditional elements that Breuker used in his music. The sound of the album is surprisingly strong at times – especially on the straighter tracks, which groove along in a rhythmic mode, then break out for some solos that really go to town – and the whole thing's also handled with a fair degree of wit, as you'd expect from Breuker. Titles include "Condizione Niente", "Summer Music", "Wake Up", and "Parabasis". CD

Ariya Astrobeat ArkestraTowards Other Worlds ... CD
First Word (UK), 2012. Used ... $9.99
Not Afrobeat, but Astrobeat – a unique hybrid of older funk modes and contemporary cosmic touches – all served up beautifully by Ariya! The album definitely echoes older modes from the Ethiopian scene of the 70s – particularly the chugging rhythms and tightly vamping instrumentation that you might know from the work of Fela or Tony Allen – but there's also some more 21st Century elements on the keyboards, which have a crackling bit of electricity that goes beyond the usual electric piano used back in the day – and which really helps give the record a different feel. Don't get us wrong – because nothing here is too slick, overproduced, or remix-heavy – the music is definitely Afro Funk at the core, just inflected in some really sweet ways – and served up mostly instrumental, on cuts that include "Blood In The Water", "Turncoat", "Future Ancestors", "New Frontiers", "Towards Other Worlds", and "Old Ground".
