Rico & His BandGet Up Your Foot ... LP
Grover (UK), 2001. New Copy ... $14.99 24.99
Great later work from one of the strongest instrumental voices on the Jamaican scene – trombonist Rico Rodriguez, whose horn was showcased on countless classic sessions with different singers – and on a few key albums of his own! The approach here is great – kind of back to basics, without some of the overdone ska-revival modes that you might be fearing – just simple, no-nonsense rhythms from a small combo – and lots of Rico's trombone work out front! There's a few vocal moments, but the instrument is the main focus – and titles include "Children Of Sanchez", "Fatty Fatty", "Get Up Your Foot", "Latin Expression", "Weep", "House & Family", "Lambs Bread", and "Slim & Slam". Blue Note, 1976. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A major outing from Rico Rodrigues – one of the great Trombonists of the pre-ska era, who continued to lead the way with his horn throughout all the periods Jamaican music would morph through, but maintained a sound rooted in jazz. The group is pretty large, sort of a Jamaican all stars, with names like Sly & Robbie, Skully, and Dirty Harry, and they run through some nice jazzy instrumentals, with a crisp syncopated island rhythm chugging along underneath. 9 tracks, including "Gunga Din", "Lumumba", "Over The Mountain", "Dial Africa" and "This Day". LP, Vinyl record album

Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 40s/Early 50s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful collection of Latin recordings from postwar France – all recorded by Cuban native Filiberto Rico, an artist who moved between Havana and Paris in the early part of his life – and seemed to leave quite a musical legacy in the process! Rico was part of seminal Cuban recordings of the 30s, and definitely has the chops to make his French recordings come across at a level that rivals the music taking place in his homeland at the end of the 40s – but there's also a nice current of American jump blues on some of these numbers too – which almost creates a jukebox mambo sort of vibe – as Latin percussion, rolling piano lines, and well-blown saxophone solos take off alongside the vocals! Singers here include Fermin Lorenzo Jova, Antonio Picallo, Emilio Aarmengol, Doris Marnier, and Carlos Petrel – and titles include "Somos Differentes", "Angelitos Negros", "Se Acabo", "Pajarito", "Tumba", "Tu Felicidad", "Dinorah", "Colibri", "Sabrosura", "La Ola Marina", and "La Television" 36 tracks in all! Kudu, 1976. Very Good+ ... $1.99
Hank Crawford's always been a great saxophonist – but he's also one that sometimes works even more strongly in a bigger group setting – as you'll hear on this 70s Kudu session with funky arranger David Matthews! Dave takes the groove forward from the sound that Hank sometimes had back in the 60s on Atlantic – bringing in a bit more of an electric vibe, but also providing a nice larger ensemble kick – that soulful jazz mode that Crawford first explored with Ray Charles, where he learned to pack plenty into the space of a short solo! Titles include "Funky Rooster", "Tico Rico", "Lady Soul", "Lullaby Of Love", and "Lament". LP, Vinyl record album

Alim (UK), Early 2000s/2019. New Copy ... $11.99
2 sides of classic era Jay Dee circa Welcome 2 Detroit – including a tight Mr. Thing edit! "Rico Suave Bossa Nova" has always been a stunner in the Dilla catalog – as diverse of a beatmaker and producer as he always was, the bossa beat and jazzy piano backdrop on this one stood out then and now. Mr. Thing's edit wisely keeps it in that lively and jazzy wheelhouse while extending it just a bit. "Come Get It" with Elzhi on the mic is straightforward head nodding hip hop, though Dilla's ambitious touches are on full display in the bits of vibe and other chiming atmospherics. 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Lito Barrientos Y Su OrquestaVery Very Well (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Discos Fuentes/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Very very well indeed – a crackling little set from Lito Barrientos, and one that moves through a range of 60s Latin style with a very lively vibe! There's certainly some of the spirit of early Discos Fuentes in the mix – but the record also moves with a wider-ranging spirit, as it leaps from Cuba, to Puerto Rico, to New York – then back again town to Colombia with the groove! Production is great – really bringing out that sharp rhythm that makes Discos Fuentes albums so great – and titles include a very cool mish-mosh of styles on the "Mosaico" track that takes up most of part two – plus other titles that include "Kijis Konar", "Cumbia Costena", "Charanga Pa Gozar", "Cumbia Que Te Vas De Ronda", "Caracol", and "Rubiela". Fania, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
Amazing work from the Spanish Harlem underground of the late 60s! From the title, to the cover, to the beautiful blend of songs, this album perfectly sums up the rich energy and raw power bubbling in the NuYorican scene of the time – effortlessly blending together soul, Latin, jazz, and funk – making the whole thing work perfectly because that's the way it was! These cats didn't know anything about rules – at least not until the big bad older Latin mafia snapped them in place – and the result is a freewheeling album of hard grooving jammers and sweetly emotive soul tunes! Tracks include "Puerto Rico Me Llama", "Make Me Smile", "Es Tu Cosa", "The Prayer", "Aguanta La Lengua", and "Chili Beans". LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie's at the head of a group that also features Arnie Lawrence on alto, Willie Bivens on baritone, Benny Powell on trombone, and Lawrence Rico Henderson on tenor – and although there's a chorus on most tracks, the group really stretches out on a very long instrumental at the end! Bob CorwinBob Corwin Quartet Featuring The Trumpet Of Don Elliott ... LP
Riverside, 1956. Very Good ... $34.99
An early session from trumpeter Don Elliott – one that already has him working as the standout star in the quartet of pianist Bob Corwin! Elliott only plays on 8 of the album's 10 tracks, but his well-crafted trumpet lines really make the album sparkle – almost a Clifford Brown sort of sweetness and fluidity, with a sound that's quite different from some of more gimmicky sessions. Corwin's piano is pretty strong too, but it's clear from the way the session was recorded that the main spotlight's on Don Elliott – and for good reason too! Titles include "My Shining Hour", "Rico Jico Joe", "I Remember You", "Gone With The Wind", "Pony Tail", and "I'll Remember April". LP, Vinyl record album

Vaya/Fania, 1975. Used ... $13.99
A classic collaboration between Celia Cruz and Johnny Pacheco – one that uses the rootsier sounds of Pacheco's tumbao group to further focus the energy of Celia's vocals! The record's got a solid, cohesive feel that makes it easily one of the best Celia Cruz sessions of the 70s – a focus that no doubt comes from the sharp arrangements by Louie Ramirez, Bobby Valentin, Johnny Pacheco, and Papo Lucca – the latter of whom plays piano in Pacheco's group on the record. Charlie Rodriguez plays tres on a number of tracks, further enforcing the roosty element of the music – and titles include "Cuala", "Oriza Eh", "La Sopa En Botella", "No Aguanto Mas", "Rico Changui", and "Ni Hablar". Ghetto BrothersPower/Fuerza ... CD
Salsa International/Everland (Austria), 1972. New Copy ... $14.99
A legendary record from one of the most unique Latin groups of their time! In an early 70s world where many Latin combos were going for class and poise, the Ghetto Brothers moved in another direction entirely – working here with a fair bit of electric guitar alongside more familiar Latin rhythms – all to push along some wonderfully soulful vocals! The record's got a very different feel than most east coast Latin work of the time – one that's a bit like some of the Chicano soul of the west coast, but not nearly as smooth, and with a definite nod towards both funk and singer/songwriter work of the mainstream! The guitar's really upfront in the mix – riffing off at the start of most tracks – and the vocals have a slightly sweet quality, supported by harmonies from the rest of the group at times – making for a wicked blend of modes that's extremely compelling. A record that's as filled with soul and feeling as it is with hard-edge groovers – featuring titles that include "You Say You Are My Friend", "Ghetto Brothers Power", "I Saw A Tear", "Girl From The Mountain", "There Is Something In My Hearth", "Got This Happy Feeling", and "Viva Puerto Rico Libre". Fantastic work from Vin Gordon – who may well be one of the greatest reggae trombonists since the legendary Rico – working here in a very classic style that features plenty of contributions from saxophonist Nat Birchall! Nat's very much in the space of his previous collaboration with Gordon – and also plays piano, bass, and percussion – alongside co-producer Al Breadwinner, who handles drums, guitar, organ, and piano too! The album started as a breakbeat project from Detroit's Jay Dee, but soon morphed into a full-on hip hop album – complete with real instrumentation on Fender Rhodes, trumpet, keyboards, and drums, with lyrics on about half of the tracks. Dome (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $15.99
A tight debut from Lasperanza – aka arranger producer Rico Garofalo, who put together the whole set as a tribute to older jazz, funk, and soul that laid the seeds for his own music in recent years! The record has a vibe that's a bit like that strong UK soul tradition started with Incognito, and carried forth by a number of other artists in recent years – with a really strong vision at the core, handled by a musician who's also a maestro in the studio – who then opens the door to a shifting array of singers who really make the record sparkle with a great sense of variety! Lasperanza has sax or flute solos on most tracks, and seems ready to rise up there with the cream of UK soul labels like Dome or Expansion in recent years – and guest singers include Decosta Boyce, Hannah White, LaAerial, Kayleigh O'Neill, Colette Connor, Keni Stevens, and Izzy Chase. Most tracks are remakes of soulful classics, completely changed up – and titles include "Let's Stay Together", "Give Me The Night", "Kilimanjaro", "Under The Moon & Over The Sky", "Early Morning Love", "Working Day & Night", "In The Mood", and "It Should Have Been You". ✨✧ Los Amigos InvisiblesVenezuelan Zinga Son Vol 1 ... CD
Luaka Bop, 2004. Used ... $5.99
Venezuelan groove from Los Amigos Invisibles – produced by Masters At Work! Kenny Dope and Louie Vega may seem an unlikely match for a Latin, jam-inclined percussion ensemble, but the mix works masterfully! The Amigos don't leave the live instrumentation behind for a house makeover, but what they do come up with is a heady attention to a hynotic groove. In spots, the album kind of sounds like a less self consciously artsy variation on the kind of sounds Moreno Veloso lays down with his combo. On others, like the lightly funky and disco schooled "Una Disco Llena" and "Ease Your Mind" (one of a couple songs sung in English) the MAW trademark shines brightly. Nice stuff – and one of the most appealing, and least pretentious Luaka Bop albums we've heard in a while! Other tracks include "Rico Pa' Goza", "Comodon Johnson", "Venezuelan Zinga Son", "Playa Azul", "Gerundio", "Superf***er" and more! CD

A very groovy set from keyboardist Celso Murilo – a 60s album of organ and piano instrumentals with a really cool groove! The record follows in the best tradition of small combo bossa sessions – mixing together a strongly rhythmic approach that includes percussion by the great Rubens Bassini, plus backing on trumpet, flute, and timbales – all set to the pace of Murilo's sweet lines on the keys! The style's more expansive than 60s work by Walter Wanderley or Ed Lincoln – more open to influences from American Latin music, in addition to the core samba and bossa sounds that inform the work. The whole thing's great – a driving, lively little set that's a delight throughout! George RussellNew York, New York ... LP
Decca, 1958. Very Good+ ... $28.99
A wonderful album from George Russell – and a refreshing change from his overly-academic modernist work! The session's an unusual one – a musical portrait of New York City, performed with an all-star cast that includes John Coltrane, Art Farmer, Bill Evans, Phil Woods, Benny Golson, Max Roach, and Hal McKusick – all working together to paint tones on the tunes that George has crafted to set up his scene of New York in the 50s. Most importantly, though, Jon Hendricks acts as the narrator of the album – talking and scatting in hipster mode, laying out a bit of beat rapportage about the Big Apple, all done in a very cool 50s style that's a bit different from his own vocal work. Titles include "Manhattan", "Big City Blues", "Manhattan-Rico", and "A Helluva Town". LP, Vinyl record album

The album features older Latin, lounge, and jazz styles topped by the unique vocal mode of Karl Zero – who kind of sings and speaks, mostly in French – with a level that makes the whole thing feel a lot more late 50s than you'd guess from the date of the recording – right down to an impeccable production style that makes all the right elements sound just the right way! Cool cuts from 60s Spain – all pulled from a musical moment when the Spanish scene was exploding with the same sort of new female pop energy that was taking place in France and England! Like those more familiar modes of 60s girl pop, the style here is upbeat, groovy, and undeniably powerful – quite a change from some of the bluer, weepier modes of the decade before – and a way of infusing the female voice with new energy through lively arrangements, and great use of jaunty rock styles! Lyrics are in Spanish throughout, but there's a universal appeal to the music that really bridges boundaries – excellent small combo instrumentation, often romping along with a pretty great groove – on titles that include "Creo En Ti" by Rico Durcal, "Corazon Contento" by Marisol, "Si Llegara El Amor" by Rosalia, "Aqui En Mi Nube" by Sonia, "Molino Al Viento" by Los Stop, "Prima O Poi" by Silvana Velsasco, "No Se Por Que" by Massiel, "La Verdad" by Soledad Miranda, "Pon Un Anillo En Mi Dedo" by Las Chic, and "Voy A Pintar Los Paredes Con Tu Nombre" by Los Mismos. Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
A treasure trove of reggae, rocksteady, and blue beat work from the late 60s – all of it originally released under the guidance of producer Dandy – also a reggae artists of his own, with roots in Kingston, and working here with a big impact on the UK scene! The albums here were all originally issued on the Down Town imprint – a small sub label that Trojan Records gave to Dandy for his own projects – which resulted in the two killer compilations Red Red Wine volumes 1 and 2 – a great overview of some of the strongly soul-influenced sounds that were bubbling up in London at the time. Dandy himself is one of the key artists on the collection – and titles include "Move Your Mule", "I'm Your Puppet", "Reggae In Your Jeggae", "Got To Come Back", "Raining In My Heart", and "Can't Get Used To Losing You" by Dandy – plus "Red Red Wine" and "I'm Gonna Give Her All The Love I've Got" by Tony Tribe, "Someday We'll Be Together" and "Love Me Tonight" by Audrey, "Lover's Question" and "Spreading Love" by Gene Rondo, "Lead Them" by Desmond Riley, "Games People Play" by The Israelites, and "Song Byrd" by Lyndon Johns. CD2 begins with the Trojan classic Blow Your Horn by Rico & The Rudies – a classic early album from Rico – the legendary Jamaican trombonist who's gotta be one of the few people who can pose with his instrument and still look pretty badass overall! That quality also comes through in Rico's music – a famous lead trombone sound on countless Jamaican recordings from the ska years onwards – really given some great time here in the spotlight on a set of tunes that soar out with lots of rough rocksteady rhythms! Rico blows strongly and soulfully – on titles that include "Rico's Message", "Niyah Man", "Caribbean Serenade", "Jumping The Gun", "Mighty Dan", "Session Begin", "Biafra", and "Quando Quando" – and the album also features some guest appearances on "The Lion" by Dandy, and on "Muma Muma" by The Israelites. Last up is Your Musical Doctor – a full album with Dandy as the lead singer on his own – with titles that include "Touch Of Poison", "Everybody Loves A Winner", "Gumption Feeling", "Meeting Over Yonder", "Here I Go Again", "Come On Home", and "Run Girl". 2CD set features 51 tracks in all – with a few more bonus tracks too! Essential, 1980s. New Copy ... $11.99 14.98
Way more than the usual 80s grooves – as the set definitely takes the "rare" in its title seriously, and presents a huge amount of cuts that were even new to our boogie-trained ears! The set's not the usual electro soul or post-disco material – and instead, really moves around some great territory in the realm of 80s soul – no hip hop or house, but some wonderful material that comes from a range of indie labels, and never got much exposure at the time! Titles include "Don't Make Me Wait" by Ken Thomas, "Expand Your Mind" by Johnny Davis, "Are You Lonely" by Hipnotic, "I Could Never Love Another Like You" by Joanna Gardner, "Loving Touch" by Quincy Patrick, "Too Much Too Fast" by Verna Brown & Rich Girls, "Think Fast" by Pamela Joy, "No Way To Control It" by Mac Thornhill, "Rough Life In The City" by Grace Rico, "You're Wearing Me Out" by The Sweethearts, "Love Dance" by Lou Volpe, and "Never Too Late" by Julius Brown. Treasure Isle/Doctor Bird (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
Four albums' worth of vintage ska from the Jamaican scene – presented here with a heck of a lot of bonus tracks too! These tracks are the real deal – some of the earliest tracks to be circulated under the name of the new style – and the sorts of songs that just about everyone tried to copy right off the bat, and kept on trying to match for decades more! The work all comes from the magical fingers of Duke Reid, of the Treasure Island label – and there's a fair bit of jazz in the mix too, as these groups are overflowing with talented musicians who were playing straighter jazz just a few years before. The package features the full albums Birth Of Ska, Latin Goes Ska, The Skatalite, and Don Drummond's Greatest Hits – plus 19 more bonus tracks – with work by Duke Reid's All Stars, Don Drummond, Botty & Bonny, Rico Rodriguez, Justin Hinds & The Dominoes, Owen & Leon Silvera, Eric Morris, Roland Alphonso, Clive & Naomi, The Richards Brothers, Baby Brooks, and many others. 58 tracks in all! A hard-driving set from the great Eddie Palmieri – and a record that's maybe his strongest salsa effort in years, even though it's still filled with lots of the edgey, jazzy touches he's also brought to his best material in recent decades! The album's got a very strong lead vocal presence – both from Herman Olivera and Gilberto Santa Rosa, both of whom join Eddie's group and provide a strong focus for the ensemble's jazzy performances – with an especially strong sax section that includes work from Craig Handy, Ralph Moore, Gary Smulyan, and Ronnie Cuber! Carlos Santana serves up a few guitar parts on the record – and the group also features work from Jimmy Bosch and Conrad Herwig on trombones, and Brian Lynch and Jonathan Powell on trumpets – amidst plenty of percussion, and strong lead piano from Palmieri. Titles include "Mi Congo", "Chica Ni Lambo", "Abarriba Cumbiaremos", "Sun Sun Babae", "Yo Soy Mulato", "Tremendo Cumban", "Sonando Con Puerto Rico", and "El Resbaloso". CD

Dub Store (Japan), 1960s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic sounds from the years before reggae became the international sound of Jamaica – music from the island nation's jazz scene, which was at the crossroads of so many different styles of music – jazz from the north, Latin rhythms from Cuba and Puerto Rico, and a fair bit of other Caribbean sounds too – all of which filter through the wonderful collection of music on the set! The title breaks down the different genres featured – but there's often a surprisingly unified feel to the whole record too – one that stands partly as a testament to the musical strengths of all the performers involved! In the days before Trojan and Studio One, Federal Records was an important Jamaican label – and did an especially great job of capturing some of the sounds that were part of that nation's club culture and resorts in the 60s. Titles include "Angelima" and "Like Falling In Love" by Ernest Ranglin, "Profile Cha Cha" and "Rhumbina" by Cecil Lloyd & The Starline Troubadors, "Estrellita" and "I Love Paris" by The Lennie Hibbert Combo, "Tis Wonderful" by Eric Grant, "Linstead Market" by Baba Motta & Ernest Ranglin, "Wheel & Turn Me" by Bertie King, "Go Fife Go" by Count Owen, "Mango Walk" by Bertie King & Ernest Ranglin, "String Of Pearls" by Auldey Williams & His Orchestra, "Solas Market" by Baba Motta, and "Monday Monday" by Winston Turner Quintet. ✨✧ Ghetto BrothersPower/Fuerza ... LP
Salsa International/Everland (Austria), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Some of Ricardo Ray's earliest work – recorded in New York in the mid 60s, after Ray had "arrived" from the Puerto Rico scene! The set's actually got a groove that points the way towards the famous Ray sound of years to come – a style that has traces of older mambo modes, but which also extends out in a bold, proud, pre-salsa style with plenty of great lead vocals from Bobby Cruz. There's some great descarga elements in the mix too – tight rhythms with loads of jazzy instrumentation that really makes the record cook. Highlights include the jazzy "El Mulatu", the slamming descarga "Viva Richie Ray", the "monkey twist" "Brother Ray", and the shing-a-ling number "Mambo Jazz"! LP, Vinyl record album

Joao DonatoDonato Eletrico ... CD
SESCSP (Brazil), 2016. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A glorious return to electric modes for the legendary Joao Donato – a set that has him playing the kind of sweet funky Fender Rhodes lines we love in his 70s work – alongside some Farfisa, Moog, and Clavinet too! Donato definitely takes the "eletrico" in the title seriously – and works in ways that are far more than just a rehash of his older funk – a style that also blends in some cool, cosmic lines that Joao never would have done back in the day, and which honestly makes the whole thing sound like one of his most youthful records in decades. That magical sense of space and sound is still very firmly in place, and serves the master well throughout – and the backing on the set is by a host of younger jazz musicians, with instrumentation that includes tenor, trumpet, vibes, flute, and even some nice use of strings. One of Morricone's first groundbreaking scores for the western – a brilliant batch of tunes composed for The Big Gundown, handled in a way that mixed the typical western guitar-based themes, with some of il maestro's other compulsions, like wordless vocals and isolated instrumentation amidst lush orchestral backdrops. There's barely any "spaghetti" on the plate of this one – just 13 brilliant tracks, including the main title theme, "Run, Man, Run", "The Bullfight", "After The Verdict", 'First Desert", "Cucillo Arrives" and "Normoni Choir". A later Ennio Morricone film score – one done around the turn of this century, and with a nicely understated vibe that marks most of the maestro's music from the previous decade! The score features solo piano and violin – the latter by a few different musicians – but almost always presented with that sense of spaciousness that makes Morricone so great – maybe graced more with the sentimentality of his final years, than some of the darker, atonal styles of the 70s. Nice to know that we've lived past the year 2000 – and have managed to miss the holocaust that Kirk Douglas fought in this late 70s film! The movie's just the kind of overdone thriller that Kirk handled late in his career – but thankfully, the music from Ennio Morricone is much deeper overall – done in that brilliant blend of creepy styles that could make anything come together on the screen, even without any good special effects or dialogue! Some numbers have spooky, spare passages with earthy percussion and woodwinds, others have offbeat strings, some have some light electric elements – and overall, the music is nicely understated, always classy, and years ahead of some of the cheaper horror scoring of the time. Titles include "Holocaust", "Computer", "Slogan", "Jesus", "Il Bene Cattivo", "Serie Di Tre", "Strofa Monodica", and "Telefonata Interrotta". LP, Vinyl record album

Dark brilliance from Ennio Morricone – a great 70s thriller that mixes in some great extra elements with the music! Il Prefetto Di Ferro has a core sound that's very much in keeping with Morricone's approach to crime and cop films – a bit warmer and funkier at times than his horror scores, but also touched here with some slight Mediterranean moments on guitar or flute – little "Sicilian" touches to set the mood of the film, in a way that also creates some nicely exotic touches. The record features some vocals and guitar from Rosa Balestrieri – a new collaborator for Morricone – and titles include "La Mafia", "Omerta", "Canto Di Sicilia", "Siccita", "Morte Di Ferrarello", and "Una Rete Di Protezioni". One of Morricone's most fantastic scores ever! The sound is very subdued and very subtle, but it's got that beautiful Morricone sound. The notes just inch by, one after one, in short, spare passages – and they build up into a tapestry of sweet, yet off-kilter sounds. It's beautiful stuff, and the kind of brilliant compositional work that makes Morricone one of the greatest composers ever! Dagored (Italy), 1970. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest soundtracks ever from the legendary Ennio Morricone – a real standard-setting record that's one of the top choices we go to again and again to illustrate the genius of his music! The score is a fantastic mix of the two best sides of Morricone's work – the kind of light, lilting melodies that are schooled in bossa, but turned loose on their own devices – and the darker, more atonal passages that would come to play more strongly during the 70s. The light wins over the darkness in most of the record – especially the tracks that feature the sublime wordless vocals of Edda Dell'Orso, which swell and fall with the movement of the strings and keyboards. The whole thing's wonderful – and titles include "Le Foto Proibite", "Nel Vuoto", "Intermezzino Pop", "Amor Come Dolore", and "Quelle Foto". LP, Vinyl record album

The main theme is a classic – a haunting, drifting track that really illustrates Morricone's capacity for warmer elements – something that some folks forget, if they only know his horror music and more ambitious work. A dreamy soundtrack for an obscure Rock Hudson film – one that sports some really wonderful music from Ennio Morricone! The music here is occasionally topped with groovy vocals – often sung wordlessly in a "la la la" sort of mode by I Cantori Moderni, and set to instrumentation that's sometimes soft, sometimes swinging – always in the best late 60s Italian mode. At times, there's a slightly more American 60s feel to the soundtrack than some of Morricone's other work – but in a really great way that makes for less dark corners, and brighter instrumental flourishes that really stand out. The main theme repeats often through the album – sometimes with a bit of guitar, sometimes keyboards – all very groovy! LP, Vinyl record album

Dagored (Italy), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A very groovy early soundtrack by Morricone! This one's earlier than many of the reissues we've been stocking – and it's got a groovy sound that's made even groovier by some fab vocal work by I Cantori Moderni, a hip vocalese group that's kind of the Italian version of The Swingle Singers. The group has sung more famously on soundtracks by Armando Trovajoli – but they sound pretty darn great on this one, grooving along wonderfully over some spy-like themes by Morricone – with lots of jazzy changes. The tracklist is structured differently than previous editions, and extends the previous vinyl versions by more than 10 minutes! Titles include "Slalom (Titoli)", "Sestriere", "Una Sera In Albergo", "Un Omicidio Misterioso", "Sperduto A El Cairo I", "Incontro Magico" (Parts I, II & III), "Passeggiata Nella Neve" and more. Film Score Monthly, 1982. Used ... $19.99
An amazing soundtrack from Ennio Morricone – deeply sophisticated sounds, originally done for a very schlocky movie! To be fair, the movie's quite compelling in its own way – a Sam Fuller film about a racist dog – but Morricone's score is something completely different entirely, a warmly melodic batch of music that easily rivals some of his best mellow classics of the Italian scene of the early 70s, as well as some of his more famous work of the decade to come. There's these sweet-stepping string passages that are very light, and blended with a haunting bit of piano or woodwind – occasionally set off by some darker, more atonal moments – but often going back to the warmth in ways you wouldn't expect from the story. Plus, there's this undercurrent of majesty that's really amazing – which really comes out strongly in this expanded Film Score presentation of the material – a whopping 34 tracks ina ll, with titles that include "Chasing Rabbit", "Walking Dog", "Dog's Escape", "Death Of A Dog/End Credits", "The Girl & Her Problems", "Cured Canine", and bonus cuts that include "Inside The Church", "After The Murder (alt)", and "Second Theme The Girl & The Dog". A relatively dramatic score from Ennio Morricone– as you might guess from the military title! Some of the tunes here have a very strong military feel, but others move into surprisingly sweeter territory – that more mainstream side of Morricone's sound, but still pretty great – with full strings swelling up in lush sounds that are very compelling. There's also some subtly spooky sounds on a few of the numbers – the odd instrumental moments that Morricone could sneak in nicely on a score like this – conducted perfectly by orchestra director Bruno Nicolai. Titles include "Theme Of Ali", "Tortures", "Clandestine Marriage", "Battle Of Algiers March", "Sorrow In The Casbah", and "Algiers November 1 1954". LP, Vinyl record album

Ennio Morricone & OthersQuentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Decca/Third Man, 2015. New Copy 2LP ... $16.99 30.00
Director Quentin Tarantino has drawn plenty of inspiration from the music of Ennio Morricone over the years – either using short passages of older Morricone music in his films, or evoking the substance and style of the maestro in the way he uses sounds from other sources too! So it's only fitting that this time around, the pair are finally brought together fully – as Morricone turns out one of his best soundtracks in years for Tarantino's Hateful Eight – a brooding, suspenseful tale that owes plenty to the western generation that first sprung Morricone to global fame! Yet as with most of Ennio's best work, the style here is something that goes far beyond expectation – orchestrations that take on a style completely their own – with instrumental elements that have stronger focus amidst the larger charts, and a sense of mood and color here that's completely sublime. The record is mostly music from Morricone – written for the film – and features a few passages of dialogue from the movie, plus just a few additional tracks by The White Stripes, Roy Orbison, and David Hess. Yet it's more than fair to think of this as a complete score by Morricone – very different than the usual compilation-style soundtracks we've had before from Tarantino. LP, Vinyl record album

GDM/Monte Stella (Italy), 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 26.98
A mid 70s Italian cartoon, but one that features some great soundtrack work from Ennio Morricone and Alessandro Alessandroni – each of whom bring a slightly different feel to the set! Morricone composed the film's main love theme – "Forse Basta" – a beautiful number that has all the compressed, slow-stepping brilliance of some of the maestro's more familiar 70s numbers – somewhat sweet, but with a subtle undercurrent of sadness that's really great too. Alessandroni takes off from this mode with his other work on the set – staying sweet at points, but also really opening up into a range of more playful modes – sometimes funky or fuzzy, sometimes more romping, all in ways that nicely match the action in the cartoon. I Cantori Moderni sing on a few numbers that have a straighter, lyrical sound. 21 tracks in all – including "I Baronetti", "Latino Americana", "Made In USA", "Forse Basta", "Deserto Di Elam", and "Sirtaki Dei Colnnelli". Beat/Dagored (Italy), 1974. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $18.99
Wild work from Ennio Morricone – and not usually the kind of track you'd expect to find on a 7" single! "Il Buio" has all these fast-moving, really sinister violins at the start – almost raging like a swarm of angry hornets – before mellowing out about halfway through, and going for a more familiar Morricone mode! "La Luce" is just the opposite of its title – lots of dark organ lines on an echoey church instrument – very much the kind of theme you'd expect to hear for the Antichrist! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Limited to 500 copies.)

Ennio Morricone/Gruppo Improvvisazione NuovaGli Occhi Freddi Della Paura (aka Cold Eyes Of Fear) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tiger Bay (UK), 1971. Sealed (reissue)... $19.99
A dark and extremely avant garde soundtrack from the great Ennio Morricone – one that's done in collaboration with his own Gruppo Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza – an ensemble with roots in film scoring, but expressions that are more in the mode of 20th century avant! The music is a blend of free improvisation and more straight ahead jazz – with electric guitar, trumpet, violin, and percussion mixed with lots of weird effects and electronics – much more experimental than some of Morricone's more famous soundtracks of the time, and given a nice sense of direction from conductor Bruno Nicolai. The whole thing's incredibly spooky – one of the most turgid scores we've ever heard from the pen of Morricone – and the titles include "Sequita", "Evaporazione", "Dal Sogno E Ritorno", "Folle Folle", and "Notte E Misteri". Esther PhillipsCapricorn Princess ... CD
Kudu/Reel Music, 1976. Used ... $9.99
A pretty amazing set from Esther Phillips – her final album for Kudu – and a beautiful mix of soaring soul sounds from one the most unique, emotionally-inflected soul vocalists of her era! Esther's in prime Kudu mode here – working with jazzy arrangements by David Matthews and Pee Wee Ellis, adding her unique, grit-inflected soul chanteuse vocals to a smoother mix of instrumentation that creates a perfect counterpoint that took her way past her earlier work! There's also a couple of really sweet disco skewed numbers that work incredibly well – with spacier bits of synth and a dancefloor soul bed of percussion and rhythms – and in general, the arrangements are pretty great from track-to-track! Players include Randy Brecker and Mike Brecker on trumpet and tenor sax, Bray Miles on synthesizer, Bobby Lyle on clavinet, Eric Gale on guitar, Joe Farrell on tenor sax and alto flute, percussionist Ralph MacDonald and other excellent name musicians and others bring a grand sweep and sweeter intimacy when the mood requires. Titles include "Magic's In The Air", "A Beautiful Friendship", "Boy I Really Tied One On", "Higher & Higher", and "All The Way Down". CD

Enrico RavaEasy Living ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2004. Used ... $4.99
A nicely mature album from trumpeter Enrico Rava – one that really explores the space between the notes, and which has Rava in the company of a very well-matched quintet! Enrico always had a sense of "less is more" in his horn, right from the start – but that quality only blossomed even more strongly over the course of years – to a point where his leadership seemed to inspire his best contemporaries to find the perfect sort of balance in which to work. That's definitely the case here – on a record that draws subtle, but powerful sounds from a lineup that includes Gianluca Petrella on trombone, Stefano Bollani on piano, Rosario Bonaccorso on bass, and Roberto Gatto on drums. Tracks include the great title reworking of "Easy Living" – plus "Cromosomi", "Hornette & The Drums Thing", "Blancasnow", "Algir Dalbughi", "Drops", and "Traveling Night". CD

Enrico RavaPilgrim & The Stars ... LP
ECM, 1975. Very Good+ ... $11.99
One of Enrico Rava's more over-the-top albums – recorded with a full-on trumpet sound that reminds us a bit of Freddie Hubbard in early CTI years, set into some harder jamming post-Miles arrangements! The backing is by a John Abercrombie on guitar, Palle Danielsoon on bass, and Jon Cristensen on drums – but you'd swear that there's a larger ensemble working away on the record, given the full sound beneath Rava's lofty trumpet solos – yet the set is really just the efforts of this core quartet, working with a surprising amount of dynamism, especially considering the ECM setting. Titles include "Bella", "Pilgrim & The Stars", "Pesce Naufrago", "By The Sea", and "Blancasnow". LP, Vinyl record album

Enrico RavaQuotation Marks ... LP
Japo (Germany), 1976. Near Mint- ... $24.99
One of the richest 70s albums by Enrico Rava – a set scored with a fullness that matches Rava's own bold notes on the trumpet, and which is carried off in a mix of Latin and European themes that are really wonderful! The set's got a sense of ambition that matches work by the Charlie Haden Liberation Orchestra, or Gato Barbieri on his best sides for Impulse – a meeting of musical worlds and ideas that come together magically, and create something far greater than the individual parts! Other artists involved include Jeanne Lee, John Abercrombie, Warren Smith, El Negro Gonzales, and David Horowitz – and titles include "Water Kite", "Quotation Marks", "San Justo", "Sola", "Short Visit To Malena", and "Espejismo Ratonera". ✨✧ Federico BonifaziAutumn Colors Suite ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The "colors" in the title really gets it right – as pianist Federico Bonifazi has a way with a tune that's especially colorful – a quality in his compositions that always has his records really standing out from the rest! Federico's a great leader here, too – but not in an egocentric way – as he always seems more concerned about the overall sound of the group, and gives especially strong placement to the horns – which in this case feature the trumpet of Giampaolo Casati, the tenor of Emanuele Cisi, and trombone of Gianluca Petrella – all players who come together beautifully to illustrate the the colors in the tunes! The rest of the group features Gabriele Evangelista on bass and Alfred Kramer on drums – a combo that really makes the most of Bonifazi's original tunes, which include "Deep", "Against Time", "Soul Music", "Autumn Colors", "Overview", and "Night Of Peace". ✨✧ Ennio MorriconeMorricone Groove – The Kaleidoscope Sound Of Ennio Morricone 1964 to 1977 (180 gram red & yellow marbled vinyl pressing) ... LP
Beatball (Korea), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really beautiful collection of work from Ennio Morricone – one of the greatest soundtrack composers of all time, especially during the period covered in this set! The songs here are from a time when the maestro was effortlessly combining jazz, mod rhythms, rock instrumentation, and other stranger elements – all with a flawless sense of presentation and production that could make even familiar sounds come across in really different ways! The package definitely focuses on the groove promised in the title – but if you know Morricone at all, you'll know that that doesn't mean familiar funk, and instead hits some really mindblowing territory beyond description. Includes work from the films Com Impari Ad Amare Le Donna, Ruba Al Prossimo Tuo, Il Diavolo Nel Cervello, Spasmo, Ad Ogni Costo, Maddaelna, La Dona Invisible, Le Foto Proibite, and other Morricone classics! LP, Vinyl record album
("Sunburst" and "Bloody" colored vinyl pressing – really beautiful, with heavy vinyl and cover!)
