RicoJama Rico (180 gram pressing) ... LP
2 Tone/Chrysalis (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 23.98
An early 80s gem from Rico – one of a few records he did for the 2 Tone label, but in a voice that's every bit as strong as his work in the 70s! 2 Tone was mostly known for its crossover ska releases – albums by The Selecter or Specials – but the label let Rico keep on moving in that instrumental groove from his Jamaican roots – recording with top-shelf players who include Ansell Collins on organ and Chinna Smith on guitar – but also getting a bit of 2 Tone help from Dick Cuthell on flugelhorn and Jerry Dammers on piano and organ. The tunes all have a great laidback vibe – more in a rocksteady instrumental mode than an upbeat ska one – and Titles include "Do The Reload", "Easter Island", "Some Day", "Love and Justice", "Java", "Destroy Them", and "Distant Drums". RicoThat Man Is Forward (180 gram pressing) ... LP
2 Tone/Chrysalis (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 23.98
A classic album from Rico Rodriguez – one of the few cuts who can handle a trombone and make it seem like a totally badass instrument! Yet that's what Rico did, and did beautifully on a string of late 70s and early 80s albums that saw him rising up from early Kingston fame to a whole new scene over in London – which he hits very well here, thanks to some nice 2 Tone Record stylings on the production! Yet the core of the album is pre Jamaica – as Rico blows with rhythms from Sly & Robby, plus organ from Ansell Collins, guitar from Mikey Chung and Chinna Smith, and piano from Winston Wright – on instrumental smokers that include "Stay Out Late", "Red Top", "Ganja", "Easy Snappin", "Fiesta", "Chang Kai Shek", and "That Man Is Forward". Hank CrawfordTico Rico ... LP
Kudu, 1976. Near Mint- ... $5.99
Hank Crawford's always been a great saxophonist – but he's also one that sometimes works even more strongly in a bigger group setting – as you'll hear on this 70s Kudu session with funky arranger David Matthews! Dave takes the groove forward from the sound that Hank sometimes had back in the 60s on Atlantic – bringing in a bit more of an electric vibe, but also providing a nice larger ensemble kick – that soulful jazz mode that Crawford first explored with Ray Charles, where he learned to pack plenty into the space of a short solo! Titles include "Funky Rooster", "Tico Rico", "Lady Soul", "Lullaby Of Love", and "Lament". LP, Vinyl record album

Alim (UK), Early 2000s/2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 sides of classic era Jay Dee circa Welcome 2 Detroit – including a tight Mr. Thing edit! "Rico Suave Bossa Nova" has always been a stunner in the Dilla catalog – as diverse of a beatmaker and producer as he always was, the bossa beat and jazzy piano backdrop on this one stood out then and now. Mr. Thing's edit wisely keeps it in that lively and jazzy wheelhouse while extending it just a bit. "Come Get It" with Elzhi on the mic is straightforward head nodding hip hop, though Dilla's ambitious touches are on full display in the bits of vibe and other chiming atmospherics. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Rare original pressing of this lost album of west coast Latin jazz from the 60s! Benny Velarde was part of the great Latin scene in San Francisco at the end of the 50s and beginning of the 60s – and this album is one of the only ones ever cut under his own name. The record's filled with work by great players like the famous Duran brothers Manuel, Carlos, and Eddie – plus Armando Paoloni, Cliff Anderson, and Pete Escovedo. Pupi Legarreto handled most of the arrangements – and titles include "Jamaicuba", "Canto Guajiro", "Las Guajiras", "Yolanda Pachanga", "Ay Senor", "Assebouco", and "Baila Mi Guaguanco". ✨✧ VariousSaoco Vol 2 – Bomba, Plena, & The Roots Of Salsa In Puerto Rico 1955 to 1967 ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 50s/1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from the Puerto Rican scene of the 60s – a key link between the music of Cuba and New York – and an outlet that became even more important after the fall of Havana! Back in the day, there was steady traffic between San Juan and uptown New York – as styles traded, grooves emerged, and whole worlds of Latin music grew into place in the process – showing a new, youthful style that was especially heavy on percussion – and which often had a much tighter small group approach that was quite a contrast to the bigger orchestras of the previous generation! The Puerto Rican groove was crucial in kicking off the Latin Soul generation, and the salsa one as well – and the music here is from a host of indie labels who really had an ear to the underground in these key years – and came up with plenty of greatness in the process. The double-length package is a great retrospective of these years – and features detailed notes in English and Spanish, lots of great images, and a smoking set of 28 tracks that includes "Que Culpa Tengo Yo" by Chivirico, "La Vieja Voladora" by Chuito El De Bayamon, "Guaracha Y Cha Cha Cha" by Moncho Lena, "Moliendo Cafe" by Cortijo, "Arrabalera" by Tonin Romero, "Muchachita Lozana" by Odilo Gonzalez, "Tras Tres Tragos" by Mario Ortiz, "Dolores" by Joe Cotto, "Candela" by Ramito, "Kijis Konar" by Mon Rivera, and "Que Chevere" by Kito Velez. A treasure trove of 50s and 60s music from Puerto Rico – and a killer compilation centered around the pioneering work of percussionist Rafael Cortijo and singer Ismael Rivera! Essentially, this a blueprint for the global salsa, tropical and Latin scenes to come – and it's invigorating, tightly grooving and wonderful stuff all the way! Wall-to-wall Afro and West Indian-indebted percussion and rhythms, with tight horns and incredible vocals. It's filled pioneering work, but this is hardly a history listen – it's a fun set, and a sprawling one at that! Includes "Cortaron a Elena" by Cortijo (as Canario & Su Grupo con Raful), "En Orbita" by Baltazar Carrero, "Habla Cuembre" by Los Caballeros Del Ritmo, "El Plenero" by Mon Rivera Y Su Orquesta, "Dejalo Que Suba" by by Cortijo (as Canario & Su Grupo con Raful), "Belinda" by Chivirico, "Cucala" by Cortijo Y Su Combo con Ismael Rivera, "Ron Con Coco" by Mon Rivera Y Su Orquesta and more. 30 tracks on 3LPs! Ghetto BrothersPower/Fuerza ... LP
Salsa International/Everland (Austria), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 29.98
A legendary record from one of the most unique Latin groups of their time! In an early 70s world where many Latin combos were going for class and poise, the Ghetto Brothers moved in another direction entirely – working here with a fair bit of electric guitar alongside more familiar Latin rhythms – all to push along some wonderfully soulful vocals! The record's got a very different feel than most east coast Latin work of the time – one that's a bit like some of the Chicano soul of the west coast, but not nearly as smooth, and with a definite nod towards both funk and singer/songwriter work of the mainstream! The guitar's really upfront in the mix – riffing off at the start of most tracks – and the vocals have a slightly sweet quality, supported by harmonies from the rest of the group at times – making for a wicked blend of modes that's extremely compelling. A record that's as filled with soul and feeling as it is with hard-edge groovers – featuring titles that include "You Say You Are My Friend", "Ghetto Brothers Power", "I Saw A Tear", "Girl From The Mountain", "There Is Something In My Hearth", "Got This Happy Feeling", and "Viva Puerto Rico Libre". Vin GordonAfrican Shores ... CD
Tradition Disc (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
Fantastic work from Vin Gordon – who may well be one of the greatest reggae trombonists since the legendary Rico – working here in a very classic style that features plenty of contributions from saxophonist Nat Birchall! Nat's very much in the space of his previous collaboration with Gordon – and also plays piano, bass, and percussion – alongside co-producer Al Breadwinner, who handles drums, guitar, organ, and piano too! Tracks are a mix of echoey, dubby numbers that still have straightforward solo work from Gordon – and others that have maybe a tighter tuneful vibe, but which still fit the strong spirit of the entire session. The quartet also features Stally on baritone and David Fullwood on trumpet – stepping out in all-instrumental splendor, on titles that include "Gusum Peck", "Shucumooku", "Sa La Vie", "African Shores", "Gold Coast Dub", "Styler Man", and "Spill Over" CD

Bunny LeeFull Up – Early Reggae Productions 1968 to 1972 ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 16.98
Mindblowing sounds from the great Bunny Lee – and exactly the kind of collection that makes us love the Pressure Sounds label so much! The track selection is wonderful – and most numbers are balanced in a unique space between reggae and rocksteady, and often have some crucial influences from American soul and funk as well – but they come across with a mode that's very different from more standard reggae, especially the style of the music that would be more codified a few years later. Instead, there's a really rich sense of experimentation here – as Bunny Lee and his All Stars work on instrumental tracks, or alongside other key artists like Delroy Wilson, Rico Rodriguez, Tommy McCook, U Roy, or Winston Williams. Some tunes have amazingly trippy touches – and a few points even mix in some wild moog too – and titles include "Double Attack", "Ivan Itler The Conqueror", "Scarface", "Joe Lewis", "War", "Wet Vision", "When I Get My Freedom", "Smooth & Sorts", and "Death Rides A Horse". Les McCannMcCanna ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1964. Very Good ... $19.99
A great Latin groove from the mighty Les McCann – a smoking set that adds in extra percussion from Willie Correa – who gives the record a sound that's quite a change from the usual McCann groove! The percussion is wonderful throughout – and given that the great Paul Humphrey is already playing drums in the trio, the whole thing's got a rhythmic zest that never lets up – way different than just the usual "with conga" style you'd hear on a Prestige Records piano trio record – and instead a groove that's definitely dedicated to the boldest Latin piano modes of the time! The track list includes a lot of originals, such as "McCanna", "Zulu", "Bastuto Baby", "Shaam-Pu II", and "Narobi Nights" – plus versions of "Que Rico" and "It Had Better Be Tonight". Decca, 1958. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99 34.99
A wonderful album from George Russell – a refreshing change from his overly-academic modernist work – and a brilliant bit of new ideas with some very down to earth expression! The session's an unusual one – a musical portrait of New York City, performed with an all-star cast who really flesh out the ideas in the music – linked together with these fantastic spoken bits by Jon Hendricks – patter about the city and the scene that really make the whole thing come alive! The lineup is virtually a who's who of modern jazz at the moment – John Coltrane and Benny Golson on tenors, Art Farmer on trumpet, Bill Evans on piano, Hal McKusick and Phil Woods on alto, and Max Roach on drums – coming together under some of the clearest leadership that George Russell has ever provided. A second great helping of hip British work from the 80s – all put together by British radio DJ Gary Crowley – whose work on Capitol Radio London kept him quite close to the action at the time! Dub Store (Japan), 1960s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99 32.98
Fantastic sounds from the years before reggae became the international sound of Jamaica – music from the island nation's jazz scene, which was at the crossroads of so many different styles of music – jazz from the north, Latin rhythms from Cuba and Puerto Rico, and a fair bit of other Caribbean sounds too – all of which filter through the wonderful collection of music on the set! The title breaks down the different genres featured – but there's often a surprisingly unified feel to the whole record too – one that stands partly as a testament to the musical strengths of all the performers involved! In the days before Trojan and Studio One, Federal Records was an important Jamaican label – and did an especially great job of capturing some of the sounds that were part of that nation's club culture and resorts in the 60s. Excellent stuff – and possibly the best title in this already great series! Kenny Dope and Little Louie Vega put together this killer set of tracks, and the groove runs from Latin to house to funk to soul to disco and back again! Sounds like a hodge-podge effort, but the MAW team make it work beautifully, and we're stunned at how we barely notice the transition between songs and moods – just more proof of the deep well of influences that Kenny and Louie are able to blend into a whole new sound and style of dancefloor rhythms. Louie's at the helm on CD one – and tracks include "Melting Pot" by Boris Gardner, "Wishing You Were Here" by Blaze, "Je Ka Jo" by Joe Claussel, "Puerto Rico" by Eddie Palmieri, "When You Touch Me" by Taana Gardner, "Troubled Girl" by Karen Ramirez, and "Beau Mot Plage" by Isolee. Kenny's got the heads up on CD two – and that one features great cuts like "Coro Miyare" by Fania All Stars, "Seventh Heaven" by Gwen Guthrie, "Rude Movements" by Sun Palace, "Time Is Running Out" by Doug Carn, "2U 4U" by Slum Village, "Getcho Soul Together (parts 1 & 2)" by Breakestra, "Slowly Surely" by Jill Scott, and "See Line Woman" by Nina Simone. Salsa International/Everland (Austria), 1972. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A cooker of an album from the Colombian scene of the 70s – a set that's much more obscure than most of the work on Discos Fuentes, and which has a really hard-driving salsa vibe! The work reminds us of some of our favorite indie sets from early 70s Puerto Rico – and mixes jazzy flourishes with rootsy percussion – all in a groove that hardly lets up for a minute! A complete killer from the Peruvian scene of the 60s – a set that shows just how special it is when the leadoff descarga track breaks into a searing saxophone solo within the first few seconds! Things don't let up after that – and Al Valdez keeps things moving and grooving at a level that rivals the best of the New York scene of the time – but maybe even more amazing given that he was working in a much smaller setting down south in Lima! Every track is a gem, and the record is rock-solid throughout, with excellent piano, percussion, and just the right use of horns – on titles that include "Dame Tu Carino", "Aprieta", "Guajira Guantanamera", "Tabaquera", "El Columpio", "Pachanga Se Baila Asi", "Que Rico Sabor", and the smoking title cut "Gozando". Born Bad (France), Late 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A whole host of cool Latin tracks from the French West Indies scene of the late 60s – not music that flowed to Guadeloupe or Martinique from Cuba or Puerto Rico – but fresh new sounds that were directly inspired by the boogaloo generation on the New York scene! The tracks here aren't straight Latin Soul – and they're hardly familiar Latin, either – and are instead this wonderful hybrid of elements, including some previous Caribbean modes – all fused into the tighter, shorter burst of energy that was unlocked once Joe Cuba and some of his generation discovered the smaller combo mode of Latin grooving! There's a nicely messed-up criss-crossing of sounds going on here – not the same as, but with similar energy to the Spanish Harlem scene at the time – on cuts that include "Jerk Vide" by David Martial, "Mais Tu Sais" by Dany Play, "Je Voudrais Danser Avec Toi" by Les Bois Sirop, "Sauvagement Sexy" by Gaby Siarras, "Sekirite" by Maurice Alcindor, "Tu Bois Beaucoup" by Le Ry-Co Jazz, "Disque La Raye" by Joby Valente, "Ou Que Di Moin" by Monsieur X, and "Ou Pas Z'Amis En Moin" by Henri Debs. Pressure Drop (UK), 1980s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A deep dive into the big wave of new ska music that exploded in the UK after the early years of punk – music that had clearly been an inspiration to many of the young artists who were coming out of London with a more political vibe, created anew by British groups who helped to give ska and rocksteady a whole new global audience! And sure, in later years the words "ska revival" might make some folks cringe – especially when it spread to these shores – but much of the work here isn't far removed from the original, and some of it even includes earlier artists getting a great second shot – all presented here in a huge 3CD set with dozens of tracks and a big booklet of notes. Features work by Judge Dread, The Specials, Merton Parkas, Laurel Aitken, The Beat, Rimshots, Rico, Wide Boys, Viewers, The RBs, The Odds, Tich Turner's Escalator, Maroon Town, The Loafers, Deltones, Rude Boys, JJ Allstars, Kim Wilde, The Selector, Lambrettas, Tigers, Charlie Parkas, The Gangsters, Arthur Kay's Originals, Bad Manners, Bodysnatchers, and many others. Vampi Soul (Spain), 2009. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Recent genius from the true king of Latin Soul – the mighty Joe Bataan, sounding every bit as great now as he did back in the day! Bataan gets some very hip backing from Los Fulanos – a Barcelona-based combo who help recreate the tight sound of Joe's early grooves from the late 60s, with just a touch of the funk he picked up in the 70s too – a really great blend that helps Bataan breath fresh new life into a range of classics from years back. The set list includes some of our favorite Latin Soul gems from Joe, and both the rhythms and production styles are completely faithful to the originals – but also aren't just simple copycat versions either. After so many years in obscurity, it's great to see Bataan back in action so strongly – cooking it hard and heavy on cuts that include "Latin Soul Square Dance", "Gypsy Woman", "Mestizo", "The Bottle", "Johnny's No Good", "Special Girl", "Subway Joe", "Puerto Rico Me Llama", and "Rap O Clap O 2008". A dozen heavy groovers from the legendary Discos Fuentes – pulled from a time when the Colombian label was really finding its sound and strengths – mixing together older strands of Afro Cuban inspiration with a special vibe that would soon make their scene rival the Latin music power of New York and Puerto Rico! The percussion is pretty darn heavy on most of these tracks – almost a fusion of the rootsier modes of early years with some of the more sophisticated musical elements developed in the small combo years of the New York 60s Latin scene – but also touched with some styles that are completely Colombian, yet still in a formative early moment that's never predictable or commercial at all. The CD is a brilliant mix of soul, jazz, house, and touches of Afro-centric rhythms – crafted in a swirling mix that dips back 30 years into the history of soul, yet still points the way towards a richly positive future – sounding a heck of a lot more "real" than just about anyone else we can think of on the market today, and showing Everett as a burgeoning soul genius – on a par with D'Angelo, Norman Harris, Donnie Hathaway – and, dare we say it, Marvin Gaye. A CD that brings together some important early work from altoist Marion Brown – two long tracks from the sessions for his Quartet album on ESP – and a later album issued only overseas! The set begins with the long tracks "Capricorn Moon" and "Mephistopheles" from Marion Brown Quartet – one of our favorite albums ever on the legendary ESP label – a rhythmic, soulful, early session by Marion Brown – recorded before his own albums on Impulse, but with a similar feel to the best new thing sessions of that label at the time! The group is superb – with Benny Maupin on sax, Alan Shorter on trumpet, Rashied Ali on drums, and Ronnie Boykins on bass, often playing in tandem with Reggie Johnson – for a unique double-pulsing feel that makes for a nice rhythmic thrust. Next are the tracks "Juba Lee" and "Iditus", from the album Juba Lee – brilliant work from Marion Brown – one of his first albums, and a great set of tracks that have a fragile New York avant style – almost ESP, but not as raw, and with the kind of soulful emotion that's always made Brown's work stand out from the rest of his crowd. The group on the album is a septet, with Beaver Harris on drums, Dave Burrell on piano, Bennie Maupin on tenor, Alan Shorter on trumpet, and Grachan Moncour III on trombone. CD

A beautiful set of free-flowing work from Italian pianist Enrico Intra – a set that takes up the space of the entire record, yet maintains a sense of structure and mission throughout! There are freer passages in the work, but the set isn't completely free jazz overall – as Intra has a way of pacing things out and using some more spacious piano lines to bring everyone else into periods of regrouping – masterfully directing a quintet that includes Sergio Fanni on trumpet, Giancarlo Barigozzi on tenor and flute, Carlo Milano on bass, and Carlo Sola on drums! This set has Intra playing piano, but also has all the spacey elements you'd guess from the cover – a very unusual mix of electronic sounds, odd effects, and acoustic piano – the latter of which is sometimes free and very avant, sometimes warmer and more grounded – but always handled with a spirit that's very much Erico's own! There are some moments of very strange percussion – which might well come from the body of the piano itself – and Alex Stangoni provides live electronics on a few of the album's tracks. A very spooky score for this film that's also known in America as "The Cat With Nine Tails" – the second collaboration between Ennio Morricone and noted horror director Dario Argento! The album's a bit different than some of Morricone's other work on horror films – and at times, it almost has qualities that sound more like a western – a spacious mix of light strings and more sparely focused instrumentation – sometimes a bassline, sometimes a bit of flute. Other numbers get a bit more dark and jagged – slightly atonal, with shimmering, shifting styles that create a tremendous amount of tension! The instrumentation includes a number of unusual twists that are not typical of Morricone at the time – and titles include "Cadenze", "Aleatorio", "Cosa Avete Fatto A Solange", "Raccapriccio", "Una Tromba E La Sua Notte", "Fine Di Solange", and "Sottinitesi". Great Morricone music for this legendary Italian western – a film that was first advertised with the line "When you've waited 15 years to a kill a man, it's a shame you can only kill him once!" The music here shows the same sort of determination as that statement – a driving, relentless theme by Morricone, taken to greater heights by the vocal chorus of I Cantori Moderni – who bring a nice sense of drama to the music, and almost underscore some of the darker elements that the maestro would use more heavily in the 70s! And as usual with Ennio, there's lots of weird, unusual elements at play – including oddly-tuned guitar parts, a spooky flute line, and even some subtle sonic modes that we can't figure out at all. The set's famous for its haunting theme – that "wah-wah-wah" melody that led to countless covers and samples over the years – but the whole thing's a lot more complex than just that tune – with lots of the same sense of space and brooding that Morricone brought to his music for Once Upon A Time In The West – with careful use of key instruments on a track by track basis, and these floating lines that almost signaled a whole new way of recording music for a film soundtrack. And yes, there's certainly key western elements like guitar or harmonica – but maybe more striking are all the points at which these obvious tropes disappear – to leave us with those really unique Morricone sounds that go way beyond music! Titles include "Insequimento", "Il Deserto", "Il Bandito Monco", "Fine Di Una Spia", "Marcetta", "Padre Ramirez", and "La Carrozza Dei Fantasmi". LP, Vinyl record album

Ennio MorriconeIl Mio Nome E Nessuno (My Name Is Nobody) ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1973. New Copy ... $19.99 28.98
A wonderfully weird Ennio Morricone score – done for an equally weird western that starred the great Terence Hill in the lead! The movie mixes in a bit of comedy with straight action – and Morricone's music really fits that vibe – with a blend of more familiar classic Morricone western modes with more unusual sounds that really spice things up – with touches that include "squishy" electric keyboards, rolling vocal choruses, whistles, clock ticking, and other odd elements! There's an incredible amount of humor here, and the soundtrack stands as one of Morricone's more mad moments from a time when he was otherwise fairly subtle in his writing – served up with orchestrations conducted by Bruno Nicolai, and some voices from I Cantori Moderni. Titles include "Il Mio Nome E Nessuno", "Uno Strano Barbiere", "Piu Delle Valchirie", and "Con I Migliori Auguri". Expanded edition – with 23 tracks! CD

Digitmovies (Italy), 1978. New Copy ... $34.99
One of the more contemplative 70s soundtracks from Ennio Morricone – almost a step towards the direction he'd take with some of his big international hits of the 80s! The music is often pensive – with some beautiful spare woodwind moments amidst light larger orchestrations – never too lush, and always handled with that spacious quality that makes the maestro so different from so many other composers of his time. The music is for an obscure TV project, far less well-known than some of his others – and the set features the lovely vocal tune "Dove Sei Amore", plus "L'Estate E'Finita", "Si L'Ammuri", and "I Due Prigionieri" – in different variations. Ennio MorriconeL'Avventuriero ... LP
GDM/Goodfellas (Italy), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A beautiful score from maestro Ennio Morricone – on that's got the perfect balance of solo piano and light orchestrations that we love so much in his music! As usual with Morricone, it's not the instruments, but the way that they're presented – the sense of spaciousness in his arrangements, isolation between the sonic elements, and overall production style that makes the whole thing come together in ways that are so completely different from mainstream scoring at the time! Sure, there's a bit of sentiment, and a touch of romance – but never in the more common style of a Hollywood score, and even different than the style that Morricone would use in later decades on his hit soundtracks. A great early gem – with titles that include "L'Avventuriero Pts 1, 2 & 3", "I Rogo Della Strega", "Un Attimo Di Tenerezza", "Paura Dei Ricordi", "Tema Di Peirol", "Il Varo", and "Momenti Serini". One of the darkest, moodiest soundtracks we've ever heard from Ennio Morricone – even in comparison to some of his atonal horror work of the 70s! The vibe here is almost 20th Century avant chamber – a bit like work from Gruppo D'Improvvisazione Nuova, but even more experimental – as odd bits of sound samples are filtered through these dark sonic textures, string parts, and electronics – all with a style that's very musique concrete overall! Tracks are much longer than usual for a soundtrack too – and the record has an experimental greatness that really stands apart from the film. Titles include "Disordini", "Ordini", "Ergastolo", and "Memento". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA/Music Box (France), 1972. New Copy ... $26.99 34.99
A groovy soundtrack to a film we'd love to see – an obscure thriller that starred Henry Fonda and Yul Brynner – and which, like most of the Morricone-scored films of the period, has dropped from cinematic history, even though the wonderful soundtrack lives on! The style of the music runs between the two poles of work from Morricone at the time – with some cuts that are spare, quiet, and very pretty, and others that are fuller, more turgid, and filled with the kind of jagged touches that can make his soundtracks incredibly dark. The main theme – "Il Serpente" – is offered in two great versions, one spare and pretty, the other a bit more driving, but still pretty darn groovy. Other tracks include "Canzone Lontana", "Nadine", "Orazione", "Tema Per Una Donna Sola", and "Parata Militare". This great CD edition features 13 more bonus tracks – which makes for a whopping 72 minutes of music! CD

Sugar/Decca (Italy), 1964. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Fantastic early soundtrack material from Ennio Morricone – penned for one of the "mondo" films of the time – a 1964 shockumentary on the state of Italian youth! As such, it's got lots of short jazzy tunes that run at a pretty fast groove, ostensibly to show the dissipation of the kids as they learn how to party – almost inspired by the realist style of early 60s TV, with a mix of bold themes, and more somber, contemplative ones. I Cantori Moderni sing wordless dreamy vocals on some numbers – and the shorter tracks offer up a very different sound of Morricone than you might expect – one that's more linked to some of his earlier pop productions in Italy – and which really gives you an idea of the depth of his early talents, even before the spaghetti western boom! Titles include "Twist Delle Zitelle", "La City", "Matricole", "Senza Freno", "Le Facce", "Penso A Te", "Bianco E Nero", and "La Prima Volta". Features a whopping 32 tracks in all – lots of unreleased bonus tracks! CD

GDM (Italy), 1974. New Copy Gatefold ... $36.99
A beautifully sensitive Italian police soundtrack from the 70s – one scored by Ennio Morricone with a bit less of the funky bits of other cop scores of the time, and a nice mix of sad-tinged, personal styles! There's a fair bit of key Morricone touches here that resonate with his best other work of the time – spacious, almost stepping rhythms; dramatic isolated instrumentation, including a bit of off-key piano; and some warmer tones that soften some of the best moments, and keep them from being too cold or dark. The drama here is subtle, but effective – and the score's a real lost gem in the catalog of the maestro deserving wider attention! Titles include "Rapimento", "Raptus Omicida", "Milano Odia La Polizi Non Puo Sparare", and "I Conti Ora Tornano". Rare soundtrack work from Ennio Morricone, recorded for an Italian TV series that didn't get any play on this side of the Atlantic! The music has a surprisingly haunting quality, especially for television – almost the darker side of Morricone that you'd hear in the earlier part of the 70s, and less like some of his warmer scores of the time when this one was recorded. Edda Dell'Orso sings quite darkly on a few tracks – really bringing an edge to the music – and there's also a mix of atonal strings and lighter, lilting moments – of the sort we're much more likely to hear in some of Morricone's best cinematic endeavors. Ennio MorriconeQuattro Mosche Di Velluto Grigio – The Four Velvet Flies (crystal vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cinevox (Italy), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
A fantastically dark Morricone score! Morricone originally wrote this material for the film Quattro Mosche Di Velluto Grigio, the third part of Dario Argento's cult terror trilogy – and until the release of this reissue, only 2 of the tracks ever made it to the public, on a rare single issued by Cinevox in 1971. The leadoff track – "4 Mosche Di Vellutto Grigio (titoli)" – is actually a bit funky, with some very heavy drums and cascading fuzzy guitar riffs that sound very nice. Then, the record moves into spookier material – like the cut "Come Un Madrigale", and a number of self-titled themes – all of which feature strange harpsichord work, dark orchestral passages, and some very spooky production work! Fortunately, the score ends on an upbeat note – a hard driving, beat group sounding version of the main theme that's a nice cap to the whole package! LP, Vinyl record album

Ennio MorriconeSenza Movemente ... LP
Quartet (Spain), 1971. New Copy ... $44.99
Beautifully slow-building work from Ennio Morricone – caught right at that near-perfect start of the 70s point when he was a master of understatement and spare musical elements! Many numbers begin with a sound that's often very spare – sliding out of the darkness sometimes with just a whisper, sometimes with a bit more force – woodwinds hidden in the shadows, piano murmuring softly, or strings that slide slowly once, then strike with more force the next time around. There's also a cool whistling bit that snakes through a few of the best tunes – a haunting theme with Alessandroni-type appeal – and the orchestrations for the album were conducted by Bruno Nicolai. The sound isn't as sweetly gliding as you might expect, but it's also not as atonal as other Morricone moments too. Titles include "In Pieno Petto", "Il Movente (2)", "Senza Motivo Apparente", "Ricera", "Ricera (2)", "Sospensione Folle", and "In Pieno Petto (2)". LP, Vinyl record album

Sweetness and darkness – perfectly blended together in this classic mid 70s soundtrack by Ennio Morricone! The main theme of the film – "Bambole" – is one of those Mondo Morricone type numbers that floats along on a gossamy sheen – vocals gliding softly over light woodwinds, stepping rhythms, and a bit of electric harpsichord – all used gently, but beautifully to create a wonderfully groovy little tune. But other numbers on the album are much more tense – strings drawn tighter, and sometimes into more atonal passages – and offset by descending woodwind passages that further underscore the melancholy of the film! Additional instrumentation includes some abstracted and slightly fuzzy guitar – and the whole album beautifully blends the sweet and dark tracks together with a great sense of pacing. A collection of classic horror soundtrack work from Ennio Morricone – mostly early 70s material that represent the maestro at the height of the early giallo genre! The tunes here are often a bit more obtuse, atonal, and abstract than some of Morricone's lighter grooves – and his work for the genre is arguably even more sophisticated and dark than the images on the screen – filled with complicated orchestrations, odd patterns of sound, and really striking instrumental moments. Dark genius from the legendary Ennio Morricone – one of the most important film composers of the 20th Century, and a master in just about any style! The work here represents a shift that Morricone made into darker modes as the 70s approached – sounds that stepped off from some of the moodier moments of his 60s western scores – especially those times when he might abstract the instrumentation, or use some elements borrowed from his experience in the Italian avant garde. These tracks are still tuneful, but also have a moody complexity that's breathtaking – and which would rewrite the rules for Hollywood soundtracks, as well as the Italian scene, for decades to come. The 2LP set features tracks from the films Il Segreto, Copkiller, Le Foto Proibite, Il Trio Infernale, I Sopravvissuti, La Corta Notte Delle Bambole, Citta Violent, Dimensioni Sonore, and Il Serpente – all wrapped up in a beautiful package! A really fantastic score from Ennio Morricone – maybe better this time around than the images on the screen for some of his other westerns of the period – more proof that the maestro was always willing to rise above, and give his best no matter what the setting! The music begins with some already-fantastic elements – mule-like noises that mark the theme and title of the film – carried out with that fantastic sense of western flourish that Morricone could do so well – a use of space in the music that evokes the landscape, even without images to view – as subtle orchestrations mix with occasional guitar, and a fair bit of the sorts of unfamiliar sounds that the maestro was always able to create! Ennio MorriconeUn Uomo Da Rispettare ... LP
CBS (Italy), 1972. Sealed ... $24.99
Great work from Ennio Morricone – a moody soundtrack to an obscure 1972 thriller starring Kirk Douglas – scored by the maestro with some especially inventive touches! Morricone's exploring his use of space quite a bit in this one – opening up the sound slowly, and patiently – so that you can really hear and concentrate on all the unusual sounds he creates – some almost as experimental as his work with Gruppo D'Improvvisazione Nuova, others more in that warmly musical quality you'd know from other soundtracks. The sekectuins are filled with passages of sounds and silence that interweave into each other nicely - and the album's notable for the use of some odd noise effects, too – like strange clickings and scrapings, which are balanced with the album's moodier orchestral scoring. One of Morricone's more subtle scores, and filled with some very memorable moments – on titles that include "18 Pari", "A Florinda", "Colpo Parallelo", "Un Tempo Infinito", and "L'Incarico". Fantastic sounds from Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai – a set of rare albums of more serious music done for RCA – very much in the darker spirit of their recordings with the Gruppo D'Improvvisazione Nuova! The music here is more avant compositional than some of Morricone's lighter soundtrack material – with especially strong work on strings, showing the way that the maestro learned his sense of offbeat tones and phrasings from the 20th Century classical scene, which he then applied famously to some of his horror scores of the time! The music here definitely has qualities that match the spookier soundtrack 70s material from Morricone or Nicolai – especially his move to horror at the time – and as with just about all of his recordings, there's a fair bit of unusual sounds and elements that are extremely hard to peg in terms of their sources. A dark and extremely avant garde soundtrack from the great Ennio Morricone – one that's done in collaboration with his own Gruppo Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza – an ensemble with roots in film scoring, but expressions that are more in the mode of 20th century avant! The music is a blend of free improvisation and more straight ahead jazz – with electric guitar, trumpet, violin, and percussion mixed with lots of weird effects and electronics – much more experimental than some of Morricone's more famous soundtracks of the time, and given a nice sense of direction from conductor Bruno Nicolai. The whole thing's incredibly spooky – one of the most turgid scores we've ever heard from the pen of Morricone – and the titles include "Sequita", "Evaporazione", "Dal Sogno E Ritorno", "Folle Folle", and "Notte E Misteri". Expanded version – with 21 tracks in all! CD

Weirdly wonderful sounds from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – emerging here as a post-folk group who haven't really gone for sunshine pop, but who know how to use both their own harmonies and the strengths of the studio to their best advantage! There's definitely some catchy vocal bits that recall the work of some of their contemporaries – but these guys also had a strong commitment to roots sounds, right from the start – and contribute some surprisingly strong work on mandolin, harmonica, and other instruments that give them a deeper sound than polished California pop! They've also got a time-spanning quality that fits their name and look – 20s dandies into 60s hippies – and titles include "Happy Fat Annie", "Truly Right", "Search The Sky", and "Shadow Dream Song".
