Capitol, 1994. Used ... $2.99
A well-remembered set from Richard Thompson's Capitol years – a record that's awash in that amazing and unique vocal style that only seemed to get better as the decades moved on! Thompson's got this mature quality here that's wonderful – maybe understating some elements that would have been more foregrounded in earlier years – but also completely confident in the way he handles his guitar with all these unusual little sonic traces – subtle currents of darkness that are used perfectly alongside the lyrics, and in way that still has Thompson in territory that nobody else can touch! Titles include "For The Sake Of Mary", "The Way That It Shows", "MGB GT", "Mascara Tears", "Fast Food", "Shane & Dixie", "King Of Bohemia", "Mingus Eyes", and "Beeswing". CD

Richard Thompson is relatively fresh out of Fairport Convention here, and while there are traces of that group in his solo music, it's also very clear that the set is the key to his long legacy to come! Thompson's guitar is much more upfront than before – really finding itself in both an acoustic and electric mode – sometimes blended with folksy instrumentation from the past, but also much more focused with that sonic quality that really befits Thompson's very unusual vocal approach! Titles include "Roll Over Vaughn Williams", "The New St George", "Cold Feet", "Painted Ladies", "Twisted", "Wheely Down", and "The Poor Ditching Boy". CD

✨✧ Richard & Linda ThompsonI Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Island (UK), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first and greatest album together from Richard & Linda Thompson – and easily one of best folk rock records of the 70s – and perhaps any other decade! That's not hyperbole – I Want To See The Bright Lights is so deeply effective, song after song, you're stunned by the end of it! Electric guitars and some fairly heavy drums for this kind of material work with accordion, krummhorn and other British and European folk elements – which makes for a unique vibe. When you pair that with such great original songs – and Linda's and Richard's voices, leading the way – it's purely incredible. Titles include "When I Get To The Border", "We Sing Hallelujah", "The Great Valerio", "The Cavalry Cross", "The End Of The Rainbow", "Down Where The Drunkards Roll", and "The Little Beggar Girl". CD

Lucky ThompsonLucky Strikes ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1964. Used ... $14.99
One of the gems that Lucky Thompson cut on his return to the US in the mid 60s – and one of the few albums from that time that got wide release! The album's a laidback quartet session that has Lucky blowing both tenor and his new love, soprano sax, with a group that includes Hank Jones on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. Thompson's playing is a masterpiece in understatement – with these sly lines, especially on soprano sax, that really set things off beautifully – grabbing you by surprise and holding you rapt, in ways that remind us a bit of Pony Poindexter during the same time. Titles include "Mumba Neua", "Invitation", "Prey Loot", "Fly With The Wind", and "Mid Nite Oil". CD

Dodo MarmarosaDodo's Back! ... CD
Argo/Universal (Japan), 1961. New Copy ... $13.99 About November 25, 2021 (delayed)
A wonderful later album from pianist Dodo Marmarosa – quite possibly his greatest record ever! The set's an obscure "comeback" date recorded in Chicago for Chess in the early 60s – a trio session with Richard Evans on bass and Marshall Thompson on drums – both working very gently behind Marmarosa's lead. Dodo sounds wonderful here – slightly broken down and world-weary, but in a way that makes for quite a change both from his earlier recordings, and from the standard piano session of the time. There's nothing too polished here, and there's always a strong sense of "voice" on the tracks – a quality that speaks volumes with a short amount of effort – and which has really made this one a favorite of ours over the years! Titles include "Tracy's Blues", "Mellow Mood", "On Green Dolphin Street", and "Cottage For Sale". CD

PentanglePentagle – The Albums 1968 to 1972 (Pentangle/Sweet Child/Basket Of Light/Cruel Sister/Reflection/Solomon's Seal – plus bonus tracks) (7CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 7CD ... $64.99
An incredible run of music from a really legendary band – a quintet who were as important to the British folk scene as Fairport Convention – and one who worked with an equally hip sort of vibe! Where that group featured key work from a young Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny, this one features mindblowing guitars from John Renbourn and Bert Jansch – a duo who would already be fantastic enough on their own, but who really open up in the sound of the group – way past their own wonderful albums of just a few years before! Part of the strength of Pentangle likes in the vocals of Jaqui McShee – a singer who's clearly got an ear for jazz, and brings in a strong sense of improvisation and extrapolation – as do both guitarists in the music. The bass is also fantastic – handled by Danny Thompson, who also seems to be a jazzman at heart – given the way he bends and shades things, at a level that no folk group ever would do. Percussionist Terry Cox is the remaining member of the group – nicely understated, and working with Thompson in this way that makes for these cool gentle grooves that Renbourn or Jansch never would have hit on their own. Every record here is a gem – and the set not only includes all six albums (one of which is a double) in these tiny LP-styled sleeves, it also features an insane number of bonus tracks too – and a huge book on the group and their music. 115 tracks in all – including 54 bonus tracks, a number of which are previously unreleased! VariousSeparate Paths Together – An Anthology Of British Male Singer/Songwriters 1965 to 1975 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
Key work from an amazing time in British music – a time when the softer sounds of folk music and harder sounds of rock groups stepped aside to allow a unique hybrid to emerge – the sophisticated singer/songwriter, who had an ability to borrow the best from both genres, yet come up with a spirit that was all his own! You'll recognize some of the names here from their work in other fields – but together, the artists represent a very rich document of this unique moment in music – work that's free from commercial pursuits, and which still feels very fresh and new all these many decades later – thanks to a strong ear for songcraft, and a musical vision that's especially surprising from some of the artists who later went on to crossover fame in the mid 70s. The package features 66 tracks in all, with very detailed notes on the well-chosen array of tracks – titles by artists who include Dave Cousins, Gary Farr, Peter Sarstedt, Wizz Jones, Beau, Meic Stevens, Ian A Anderson, Mike Cooper, Mick Audsley, Clifford T Ward, Richard Thompson, Kevin Ayers, David McWilliams, Al Stewart, Marc Brierley, Al Jones, Keith Riley, Bill Fay, Tony Hazzard, Dave Morgan, Phil Cordell, Ray Dorset, Graham Gouldman, Mike Heron, and many others! ✨✧ Nick DrakeBryter Layter ... CD
Island/Ryko, 1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The second album from the legendary Nick Drake – one of those records we could never ever live without – and a true piece of genius that's been turning on generations of listeners since Nick first recorded it back at the start of the 70s! The format is folksy, but the execution is something else entirely – filled with jazzy phrasing, hypnotic lyrics, and arrangements that really go far beyond any cliches or contemporary work you might expect. The great Joe Boyd produced – and really helps give a strong focus to Nick's vocals and guitar – and the cool mix of added instrumentation – which includes organ and celeste from John Cale, flute and alto from Ray Warleigh, piano from Chris McGregor, and guitar from Richard Thompson. Drake's work is impossible to describe adequately, but if you've ever heard him, you probably stopped dead in your tracks the minute you first caught his voice. We still do the same – and it's a pleasure to have this one in stock! Titles include "Fly", "At The Chime Of A City Clock", "Hazy Jane", "Poor Boy", and "One Of These Things First". CD

Blue Thumb/Big Pink (South Korea), 1970. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very groovy set from guitar genius Gabor Szabo – one that features all those cool tones and elements he'd developed on his late 60s albums for Impulse and Skye Records, given a tighter LA groove here, with almost an A&M Records vibe! There's loads of great solos throughout, played in a combo that also features Lynn Blessing on vibes, Richard Thompson and Nick DeCaro on keyboards, and Sandra Crouch on percussion – all set to some backings handled by DeCaro, who really helps shape the sound of the set! The tunes are a really nice mix of material – and while this might not be Gabor's most way-out album, it's still full of lots of his great groovy guitar – on titles that include "Love Theme From Spartacus", "Country Illusion", "Sombrero Sam", "Lady With Child", "Pretty Girl Why", "Hum A Song", "Magical Connection", and "Fred & Betty". Yard Music (Jamaica), 1975. Good ... Out Of Stock
Essential dub material from the legendary King Tubby – a set that's one of the best of the genre during the classic years – and which stands as a true testament to how great the format can be when handled right! The watchword here is simplicity – as the key elements are almost isolated in little sonic chambers, then set to resonate alongside each other – pulled from rhythms from tracks initially done as vocal productions, but reworked through the mixing talents of Erroll "ET" Thompson and Tubby. Players include Bobby Ellis on trumpet, Richard "Dirty Harry" Hall on tenor, and Augustus Pablo on organ and piano, plus a bit of clarinet. Titles include "Keep On Dubbing", "Stop Them Jah", "Young Generation Dub", "Each One Dub", "555 Dub Street", "Braces Tower Dub", "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown", "Corner Crew Dub", "Say So", "Skanking Dub", and "Frozen Dub". ✨✧ Dudu Pukwana & The SpearsDudu Pukwana & The Spears (180 gram pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Quality/Matsuli (UK), 1969. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Amazing work from South African jazz legend Dudu Pukwana – a rare album from 1969, plus a never-issued set of tracks done for Atlantic Records at the same time! The core album, titled Dudu Pukwana & The Spears, features Dudu on alto, in the company of a lot of familiar players from his roots – Chris McGregor on piano, Mongezi Feza on trumpet, Louis Moholo on drums, Harry Miller on bass, and Jonas Gwangwa on trombone – plus great organ from Bob Stucky, who'd recorded with Pukwana a bit on the London scene of the 60s – and wholes presence really brings in a nice soul jazz vibe! The style is much straighter than the more avant 70s material of all players involved – and definitely has some of that upbeat South African sense of rhythm going on – nicely rollicking, and starting somewhere in the territory of a Hugh Masekela record, then moving into more of a Prestige 60s vibe. Titles include "Kwa Thula", "Joe's Jika", "Pho La", "Yima Mjalo", "Pezulu", "Thulula", and "Half Moon". The second batch of material is presented as an Atlantic Records acetate reproduction – a session produced by Joe Boyd, with more work from McGregor, Miller, Feza, and Moholo – plus the very unusual presence of Richard Thompson on guitar! Bob Stuckey plays organ again on a few numbers, and things are much more complex – stretching out on tunes that include "Pezulu", "Izulu Liyaduduma", "Church Mouse", "Sibuyile", and an "Untitled" number. ✨✧ VariousElectric Muse Revisited – Story Of Folk Into Rock & Beyond (4CD set) ... CD
Good Deeds (UK), 1970s/1980s/2021. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A collection that's way more than just the usual overview of British folk at the start of the 70s – as this package not only shows the huge wave of music that exploded at the time, but then also follows that strand into later years too – to include a number of previously unreleased tracks and rare demo versions as well! The collection is huge, and done in collaboration with a book of the same name – and while it begins with some familiar territory that includes tracks by Shirley Collins, Fairport Convention, Richard & Linda Thompson, Sandy Denny, and Steeleye Span – it soon moves into more obscure early acoustic/electric acts from the UK scene, then follows their evolution as the years go on, and the sound only gets even more underground. The 4CD set features 61 tracks in all – with work from Lizabett Russo, Sharon Shannon, Peter Knight's Gigspanner Band, Jim Moray, Albion Dance Band, Andrew Cronshaw, Battlefield Band, June Tabor, Eliza Carthy, The Levellers, Home Service, Oysterband, Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita, The Rails, Olivia Chaneey, Offa Rex, Imagined Village, and even Billy Bragg! Bethlehem, 1956. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Although the world always remembers Johnny Hartman best for his Impulse recordings with Coltrane, we've always dug some of his earlier stuff – like this album – because the sound's a bit rawer, and the style's got more of a kick! The magical Hartman voice is presented in two great settings – one a small orchestra directed by Frank Hunter, the other an even cooler group headed by Ernie Wilkins – with great horn work from players who include Anthony Ortega, Howard McGhee, Jerome Richardson, and Lucky Thompson! The tracks are familiar, but done with that dusky Hartman style – and titles include "I Could Make You Care", "The Lamp Is Low", "Stella By Starlight", "All Of Me", and a very haunting rendition of "The End Of A Love Affair". CD features 4 bonus tracks too! CD

✨✧ Quincy JonesQuintessential Charts (This Is How I Feel About Jazz/Quintessence) ... LP
ABC, 1956/1961. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A split 70s LP – with two earlier classics! First up is How I Feel About Jazz – an important early album from Quincy Jones! Q's working here in some of his hippest settings of the 50s – scoring longish versions of jazz tunes for groups that include players like Lucky Thompson on tenor, Herbie Mann on flute, Art Farmer on trumpet, Phil Woods and Gene Quill on alto sax, Hank Jones on piano, and even Charles Mingus on bass! As with most Jones albums of the time, Quincy has a way of making a bigger group sound nice and lean – hitting some especially nice edges along with the rhythms, and really showing the way towards a new soulful sound for a bigger band. Titles include a sublime 10 minute version of "Walkin" that kicks off the album with a great soulful groove – plus original tunes "Evening In Paris", "Stockholm Sweetnin", and "Boo's Blues", as well as a version of Cannonball Adderley's "Sermonette". Next is Quintessence – a very soulful set of big band material from Quincy Jones – recorded during that tight early 60s period when his arrangements just couldn't fail! The album's his only session for Impulse, and it's got a slightly deeper style than his work from the time for Mercury – a bit more sophisticated, with nice modern touches that take the tunes in surprising directions. Part of the greatness of the set lies in the players – as the album features work by Curtis Fuller, Thad Jones, Stu Martin, Freddie Hubbard, Patty Brown, Phil Woods, and Jerome Richardson – and titles include "Robot Portrait", "Hard Sock Dance", "The Twitch", and "For Lena & Lennie". Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wealth of rare work from Jamaican studio genius Bunny Striker Lee – unusual cuts and unreleased material – all of it a further testament to his legendary ear for a mindblowing sound! These aren't half-baked cuts, or material that deserved to fall to the cutting room floor – because the style is years ahead of its time, and put together with techniques and styles that are still pretty darn revolutionary after all these many years! Some tracks have a strong vocal presence, others are more instrumental – and in addition to Lee's famous flying cymbals technique, there's lots more going on here too – including some totally cool space age sounds. Unreleased tracks include "Bell Road Rock" by The Aggrovators, "Joe Frazier" by Tommy McCook, "Go Jah Jah Pickney" by Linval Thompson, "No Man Is An Island" by Johnny Clarke & Horace Andy, "Bunny Lee & King Tubby's Dubplate Special" by Cornell Campbell, "Life Of My Own" by The Raver, "Look How Long Nyabinghi Calling You" by Linval Thompson, "King Tubby's Vs Arrows Dubplate" by Cornell Campbell, "Jamaican Fruit Of African Roots" by Lennox Brown & Sheila Richards, "No Babylon Shall Escape In This Time" by Johnny Clarke, and "Every Knee Shall Bow" by Ronnie Davis.
