T RexElectric Warrior ... CD
A&M, 1971. Used ... $3.99
The early 70s glam masterpiece from T Rex – setting the standard for the sounds to come – and pop landmark status aside, it's probably the best album Bolan, Mickey Finn and the group ever cut! On Electric Warrior, T Rex resurrects the primitive spirit of the seediest rock of their predecessors, with a sound that's loud and anthemic. They hide sax, fluegelhorn and classical-styled strings under loud guitars, making this some of prettiest sleaze of the 70s! Classic! Includes the classics "Jeepster", "Bang A Gong (Get It On)", "Life's A Gas", "Monolith", "Planet Queen, "Girl" and more. CD

Doris Norton really moves out of the sound library shadows with this mid-80s set – a record that's got lots of tight electro-soul grooves – served up with plenty of beats, Roland keyboards, and even a bit of vocoder material as well! Doris works alongside Antonious Rex – who did more of the non-digital side of the record – and the duo create tight tracks in Doris' sound lab that would be right at home in some 80s action soundtrack, and maybe even as beats for the linoleum crowd on the streets! Simon ReynoldsShock & Awe – Glam Rock & Its Legacy From Seventies To The Twenty First Century ... Book
Dey St, 2016. New Copy ... $6.99 18.99
Simon Reynolds has taken on many musical topics over the years – but he really outdoes himself here, in a massive examination of the rise of glam rock in the 70s – providing far more history and context than we ever would have imagined, and tracing its influence for decades after its initial moment! Usually, glam is treated like a flash in the pan – and most books use it as a footnote for its bigger proponents, like David Bowie or T Rex – but Reynolds really digs deep, and situates the musical movement in larger shifts in culture, fashion, and gender – really showing us how these mid-70s sounds opened doors and continued to provide freedom and focus for years to come. The softcover book is a massive 686 pages, with some black and white photos. Book

Fat Possum, Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 20.99
A fantastic love letter to the great Townes Van Zandt – a set that features unreleased material from his genius stretch in the early 70s! The songs here include two new songs, variations on five others by Townes, and some surprising remakes – all done in a very stripped-down mode, with a vibe that's in keeping with his first few classic albums. And despite the fact that these are lost recordings, the sound quality is excellent – beautifully resonant presentation of the amazing vocals and subtle guitar – on tracks that include "Rex's Blues", "All I Need", "The Hills Of Roane County", "Sky Blue", "Blue Ridge Mountains (smoky version)", "Pancho & Lefty", "Silver Ship Of Andilar", "Last Thing On My Mind", and "Dream Spider". VariousDown In The Valley 3 – A Heavy Selection Of Mod Rockers, Garage & Psych Funk Tracks (with bonus download) ... LP
Perfect Toy (Germany), 1960s. New Copy ... $16.99
A really great take on the style of the funky compilation – one that mixes in lots of gritty garagey rock tracks along with a bit of vintage soul! The blend here is surprisingly seamless – as the rocking tracks often have a funky kind of groove, and the soul cuts sometimes have trippier elements in the mix – which makes the whole thing come together with a strongly color-blind sense of sound – even though things are pretty darn soulful throughout! Most numbers are from rare singles, but there's also some unreleased cuts – and very detailed liner notes that shed plenty of light on these very groovy sounds. Titles on volume 3 include "Down By The River" by Sand, "Afterthought" by Heart & Soul, "Sliding" by Enalpria, "Time Past & Present" by Sound Inc, "Pushin" by Milk & Cookies, "Lifeless" by Today's Tomorrow, "Who Cares" by Del Counts, "Louisville Luck" by Gin, "I'll Stop At Nothing" by Billy Gee & Whole Shabang, and "Tribute To Jimi Hendrix" by Rex Swanigan & Fabulous Troubadores. VariousJon Savage's 1965 to 1968 – The High Sixties On 45 ... LP
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99 32.99
A heady dip back into the 60s – all served up by the mighty Jon Savage, who's written plenty on this pivotal time in modern music! The 2LP set is a condensation of the energy that Jon brought to his CD collections on Ace for the years 1965 through 1968 – and it focuses even more strongly on tracks that set the scene for all the changes to come – music that might sometimes seem subtle, but which had a real power to both signal coming change, and make it happen! All the tracks here are from singles – as you'd guess from the title – and tracks include "Rain" by Kak, "Train To Nowhere" by Savoy Brown, "Never Ever" by The Action, "Slim Jenkins' Place" by Booker T & The MGs, "I'm Five Years Ahead Of My Time" by The Third Bardo, "Bad Little Woman" by The Wheel A Ways, "The Other Place" by The Seeds, "Tell Me That You Love Me" by James Brown, "Agent Double O Soul" by Edwin Starr, "Too Many People" by The Leaves, "We Sell Soul" by The Spades, "Incense" by The Anglos, "That's The Way It's Got To Be" by The Poets, "Danse A La Musique" by The French Fries, "Wonderboy" by The Kinks, "Kick Out The Jams (preview pressing)" by MC5, "Hold On" by Sharon Tandy, "At The Third Stroke" by The Picadilly Line, "Sock It To Em JB (part 2)" by Rex Garvin & The Mighty Cravers, and "Help Me Get The Feeling (part 1)" by Ray Sharpe with the King Curtis Orchestra. Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1920s/1930s/Early 40s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A special set of music that focuses on the role of the legendary trumpeters who worked in the band of Fletcher Henderson – musicians who include Louis Armstrong, Rex Stewart, Bobby Stark, Roy Eldridge, Joe Smith, and Tommy Ladnier – all presented here with well-done remastering that offers up their performances with a vibrancy that maybe surpasses other collections of his music! The sonic shift is subtle – these sides never sound too clean or coldly processed – and there's a definite presence of the trumpets, which are sometimes lost in some of the older mixes – in recordings that also feature contributions from Coleman Hawkins on tenor, and vocals from both Bessie Smith and Ethel Waters. The 3CD collection is filled with gems from one of the most important groups in early jazz – 71 tracks in all, with notes in French and English. CD

✨✧ Various500 Atlantic R&B & Soul Singles Vol 3 – 1965/1966 ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1965/1966. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Think you know the sound of Atlantic Records in the 60s? Think again – because this stunning series opens the vault to a huge amount of rare treasures from the legendary label! The package is amazing – and offers up rare tracks that were mostly only issued by Atlantic on singles – including some on the other imprints associated with the company – some by names we never even knew recorded for the label, others by bigger names, but represented here by obscure material that goes way past their hits – and which is ultra cool because of that. There's also a fair bit more deep soul than you might expect from the usual Atlantic mix – tremendous vocals, and often in less hit-heavy modes – which makes the whole thing a great revelation – and just one more reason to bow down and give even more expect to one of the key companies who helped soul music find a home in the 60s. Plus – as if that's not enough – the whole thing comes in a very cool 7" gatefold package – which emphasizes the from-singles nature of the collection. Volume 3 is overflowing with amazing sounds from the heart of the 60s – rare 45rpm tracks by Atlantic stars, Stax artists, and a few lesser-knowns too. Titles include "Hello Stranger" by The Capitols, "Help Me (parts 1 & 2)" by Ray Sharpe, "Long Distance Love" by Ted Taylor, "Lonely Soldier" by Mike Williams, "How Can You Babysit A Man" by Ned Towns, "Keep Looking" by Solomon Bourke, "I'm Sorry" by Fred Lowrey, "Please Uncle Sam" by The Charmels, "Share What You Got" by William Bell, "Reputation" by The Four Shells, "Me & My Baby" by Mary Wells, "Got No One" by The Delcardos, "Weak Spot" by Ruby Johnson, "Good Love Bad Love" by Eddie Floyd, "Bingo" by Ned Towns, "I Had A Dream" by Johnny Taylor, "I Can't Take It" by Ray Sharpe, "You Can't Love Them All" by The Drifters, "Believe It Or Not" by Rex Garvin & The Mighty Cravers, "Patch My Heart" by The Mad Lads, "She's The One I Love" by The Delcardos, "Find Me Somebody" by Bobby Womack, "Hello Stranger" by The Capitols, "So Much Love" by Ben E King, "Help The Bear" by Ted Taylor, and "I Feel A Sin Coming On" by Solomon Burke. ✨✧ VariousNigeria Special – Modern Highlife, Afro Sounds, & Nigerian Blues 1970 to 1976 ... CD
Soundway (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Essential work from the African scene of the 70s – a collection of tracks that goes way beyond the more familiar grooves of Fela Kuti and Manu Dibango! The set may well be the deepest so far we've heard from the always-amazing Soundway Records – a package that digs into a wealth of under-heard music from early 70s Nigeria, all of it beyond simple stylistic definitions and overplayed world music cliches! Many of the grooves here are wonderfully unique – odd fusions of styles that include highlife, jazz, soul, Afrobeat, and other regional influences – sifted and shaken together, and spilled out in the studio with a really fresh sort of feel. Rhythms are at the core of most numbers here, but even those are often unfamiliar – skittish, soulful, and often somewhat playful – and the other instrumentation on the tracks is great too, and often resonates with some of the odd sounds and tunings we love in work on the Ethiopiques series. 2CD set features 26 tracks that include "Okwuke Na Nchekwube" by Celestine Ukwu & His Philosophers National, "Nekwaha Semi Colon" by The Semi Colon, "Osalobua Rekpama" by Sir Victor Owaifo & His Melody Maestros, "Onwu Ama Dike" by St Augustine & His Rovers Dance Band, "Feso Jaiye" by The Sahara All Stars Of Jos, "To Whom It May Concern" by Tunji Oyelana & The Benders, "Akula Owu Onyeara" by The Funkees, "Koma Mosi" by The Harbours Band, "Belema" by Opotopo, "Asiko Mi Ni" by Nigerian Police Force Band, "Alabeke" by Dan Satch & His Atomic 8 Dance Band, "Blak Sound" by Leo Fadaka & The Heroes, "Arraino" by Popular Cooper & His All Beats Band, "Ugali" by Tony Benson Sextet, "Akpaisong" by Etubom Rex Williams & His Nigerian Allstars, "Eguae Oba" by Osayomore Joseph & The Creative 7, "Torri Wowo" by Godwin Ezike & The Ambassadors, "Buroda Mase" by Bola Johnson & His Easy Life Top Beats, "I Want A Break Thru" by The Hykkers, and "Eguae Oba" by Osayomore Joseph & The Creative 7. Atlantic/Lonehill (Spain), 1956/1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
The meeting of two key modern jazz talents in the late 50s third stream of jazz – heard on material pulled from three different Atlantic albums recorded at the Music Inn during 1956! The core of the set features the clarinet of Jimmy Giuffre blowing alongside the Modern Jazz Quartet – in a spacious style that's very much in the spirit of Jimmy's own loosely-crafted groups of the time, and which makes surprisingly gentle use of piano, drums, and vibes next to his own gentle phrasing on clarinet. 2 of the 5 tracks with the MJQ add in Giuffre trio members Jim Hall and Ralph Pena – and titles for all include "A Fugue For Music Inn", "Serenade", "Fun",j "Da Capo", and "Fine". Added to these are 4 more titles that have Giuffre in the shifting company of other all-star players on tunes that take on a more traditional nature overall – longer jamming tracks that feature Rex Stewart, Pee Wee Russell, Teddy Charles, and Herbie Mann on titles that include "Blues In E Flat", "In A Mellotone", "The Quiet Time", and "Body & Soul". The last 3 tracks on the set return us to the Modern Jazz Quartet – working here on their own – on tracks that include "2 Degrees East 3 Degrees West", "Variation No 1 On God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", and "Oh Bess Where's My Bess". Really wonderful work from Don Pullen – solo material, and some of his most soulful sides of the 70s – done in this long-flowing style that's completely sublime! Pullen's really at his best in this format – working in a way that's very free, but never overindulgent or overexpressive in the wrong way – a kind of magical connection between his soul and the piano, with results that are still among some of the greatest in the genre. The title and cover are an homage to the Pacific Jazz label live dates from LA in the 50s – and the music here does a good job of following suit as well! Altoist Bud Shank and trumpeter Shorty Rogers are reunited beautifully in an open-ended live setting – the kind of date that really recalls some of the music Bud, Shorty, and some of their contemporaries recorded many years back – although with perhaps a rhythmic undercurrent here that shows new depths in jazz explored during subsequent decades. A treasure trove of gospel from the New York scene – all recorded for the Revelation Records imprint – a partner label to Bobby Robinson's legendary Fire & Fury labels! Titles include "Saturday Night Stay At Home" and "Megaton" by Suburban Reptiles, "Mysterex" and "True Love" by Scavengers, "Never Been To Borstal" and "She's A Mod" by Terrorways, "Suicide 2" and "I Am A Rabbit" by Proud Scum, "To Love Song" and "Squeeze" by Toy Love, "First In Line" and "True Love" by Marching Girls, and "Hate Me Hate Me" and "Feel So Good" by Spelling Mistakes. ✨✧ Kenneth PatchenKenneth Patchen Reads With Jazz In Canada ... CD
Folkways, 1958. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Kenneth Patchen, like Kenneth Rexroth, was one of the few poets who really understood what it meant to read and write in a jazz idiom – as you'll hear on this excellent set of beatnik jazz tracks! The album features Patchen reading in a great style – angular, cynical, really working the words of his poems perfectly over backings by the Alan Neil Quartet. The poems are set to music written by George Wallington, Charlie Parker, and others – and tracks include "There's A Place", "They Won't Let You In There", "Do I Not Deal With Angels", "Not Many Kingdoms Left", "The Lonesome Boy Blues", "As I Opened The Window", and "A Sight Is Little Altered". CD

✨✧ RC & The GritzAnalog World ... CD
Rexamillon/Ropeadope, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
RC & The Gritz just keep getting better and better with each new record – to the point where they've found a way to fully state their own sound, yet work with a sort of generosity that opens up the door for plenty of great collaborations! That's definitely the case here – as the group has fantastic guest vocals from a lineup that includes Carmen Rodgers, N'Dambi, Devin The Dude, Cure For Paranoia, Mumufresh, Amber Bullock, and Teedra Moses – although honestly, we'd dip our ears in any album just for the seductive keyboards of RC Williams alone! Williams has a great way of working out these bold, bottomy lines over the snapping drums of the combo – very funky, but never forced, and with a very organic groove. Titles include "Hot Pearl C", "3AM", "Fallin In Love", "My Conscience", "White Gloves", "Thickness", "Agitation", and "Lavender Lemonade (rmx)". CD
