VariousCongotronics 2 – Buzz N Rumble From The Urb'n Jungle (CD & DVD) ... CD
Crammed/Ziriguiboom, 2006. Used CD & DVD ... $4.99
The brilliant follow up to the first Congotronics album – and a set that goes even deeper than the initial groundbreaking work by Konono! This album follows in a very similar spirit to Konono's Congotronics set – and like that one, focuses on musicians with a unique electro/acoustic approach to African rhythms! Groups on the set all hail from the Kinshasa scene, like Konono, they retro-fit older styles with homemade amplification – in a way that electrifies the grooves, but often with a sound that's highly distorted – creating great fuzzy tones and noises alongside the rhythms! Konono appear on one track in the set, but the real strength comes from these other groups working in a similar mode – as they bring new instruments, sounds, and modes of expression to the format – showing that the style is not just a happy accident, but a powerful new wave of music from the urban African scene! Titles include "Mulume" by Basokin, "Bosamba Ndeke" by Bolia We Ndenge, "Kiwembo" by Sobanza Mimanisa, "Wa Muluendu" by Masanka Sakayia & Kasai Allstars, "Soif Conjugale" by Kisanzi Congo, "La Laboureur" by Masanka Sakai, "Koyile/Nyeka Nyeka" by Kasai Allstars, and "TP Coleur Cafe" by Konono No 1. CD
(Comes with a DVD featuring footage of 6 of the groups on the set!)

✨✧ Lonnie SmithEvolution ... CD
Blue Note, 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
The legendary Lonnie Smith returns to Blue Note Records – on a set that's his first record for the label in many decades, and maybe his greatest album in years! There's a great back-to-basics vibe to the set – one that has Lonnie mostly on Hammond B3, working in hip small groups – with players who include John Ellis on tenor, Joe Lovano on tenor and other saxes, Jonathan Blake on drums, and even some guest piano from Robert Glasper! The music is definitely funky, but in a fresh way from Smith's early Blue Note albums – not retro organ jazz funk, but a 21st Century reworking of the mode – at a level that still has Smith showing off that wonderful sense of flow he developed in his post-Blue Note years, but bringing things back home with a sharper edge. Titles include "Play It Back", "Talk About This", "Afrodesia", "My Favorite Things", "African Suite", and "For Heaven's Sake". CD
