A&M, 1976. Sealed Gatefold ... $24.99
A surprising release on A&M for the Revolutionary Ensemble – formerly a much more underground group, but still sounding great here recording for a bigger label! The lineup features Jerome Cooper on piano, bugle, drums, and a variety of percussion instruments – with Sirone on bass and trombone, and Leroy Jenkins on violin, thumb piano, recorder, and small gongs! Titles include "Trio for Trio", "Chinese Rock", and "Ponderous Planets". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousWallahi Le Zein! – Legendary Psychedelic Guitar Music From The Islamic Republic Of Mauritania ... LP
Mississippi, Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
Dig Tuareg guitar? Then you should find plenty here to really expand your listening palette, and in a nicely different way – as these older cuts from Mauritania show a similar use of electric guitar over long-spun rhythms – often cyclical and hypnotic, especially when the musician turns up the fuzz! The Saharan nation really has a way with the guitar – and here, the styles vary nicely, along with the variety of artists included in the set – really expanding our understanding of the music, and in a way that's as groovy as it possibly can be. The set comes with a great booklet of notes – in true Mississippi style – and titles include "Wezin" by Luleide Ould Dendenni, "Banjey" by Kebrouh, "L'Ensijab" by Ateg Ould Syed, "Wezin" by Jeich Ould Chighaly, "Moulana Laa Moulana" by Baba Ould Hembara & Mamma Mint Hembara, "El Horr & Az-Zrag" by Mohammed Cheikh Ould Syed, and "Guelbi Vatimetou" by Mohammed Guitar & Sbeyniat. Amy WinehouseAmy Winehouse At The BBC (3CD set) ... CD
Republic, Mid 2000s. New Copy 3CD ... $27.99 29.98
The career of Amy Winehouse was all too short – and although she gave us a small number of really wonderful albums, a set like this is a really great addition to her catalog! The package features a huge amount recorded on various BBC shows over the years – tracks that show the initial sharply bristling sound of Winehouse during her debut, and her great ability to grow and change – heading towards a maturity that we wish we'd seen develop on more records. A third of the set features a 2007 live set recorded by the BBC at Porchester Hall, a number of others feature appearances on Later With Jools Holland and Hootenanny – and there's a number of other show appearances too. Titles include "Rehab", "In My Bed", "Know You Now", "Tears Dry On Their Own", "Take The Box", "Some Unholy War", "Stronger Than Me", "Teach Me Tonight", "Tenderly", "Love Is A Losing Game", "Valerie", "To Know Him Is To Love Him", "Me & Mr Jones", "Monkey Man", "Addictied", "Best Friends Right", and "I Should Care". A double-length collection of remixes from the first two albums by Amy Winehouse – a set of tracks that take all the funk of the originals, and add in some elements of hip hop and club as well! ✨✧ Fela & Africa 70Coffin For Head Of State/Unknown Soldier (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Knitting Factory, 1979/1980. Used Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Two beautiful albums from one of the most difficult periods of Fela's life. "Coffin For Head Of State (Part 1 & 2)" is a mournful dirge-like track (although not without a good deal of funk), written around the death of Fela's mother from an attack on his Kalakatua Republic. "Unknown Soldier (Part 1 & 2)" tells of that attack, and has a similar mournful quality, mirroring the sadness and trauma of the event. Both tracks are fantastic, and represent a maturity and emotionality that make this time one of the best musical moments of Fela's career! CD

FME (Ken Vandermark)Montage ... CD
Okka Disk, 2006. New Copy 2CD ... $10.99 19.99
A double-disc set that documents the live efforts of the Free Music Ensemble – a power trio featuring Ken Vandermark on reeds, Nat McBride on bass, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums! The style here is very much in the legacy of Vandermark's trio work of years past, especially in association with Scandinavian players – a mix of searingly intense numbers and other more introspective ones – often performances that are focused strongly around sound textures. One CD here features a 2005 Boston show, and the other includes a concert the next day, recorded up in Montreal (some travel schedule there!). Titles include "Exit The Republic", "Drift", "But Only Almost", "False Rabbit", "On A Wire", "Looking At Dutch Stairs", "New Reference", "Ottica", and "Montage". CD

Gang Of FourSolid Gold ... LP
Warner/Matador, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 22.99
A stunning second set from the mighty Gang Of Four – and a record that's got all the power and politics of their famous Entertainment debut! The set's got some wonderfully heavy basslines amidst the scratchy guitar that makes the group so great – but nothing's too polished, certainly not as in their crossover club modes to come – and the call/response vocal style of Andy Gill and Jon King is tremendous – a very fresh way to deliver the message, and one that's still never been matched all these many years later. Titles include "Paralyzed", "What We All Want", "Why Theory", "If I Could Keep It For Myself", "Cheeseburger", "The Republic", "Outside The Trains Don't Run On Time", "In The Ditch", "A Hole In The Wallet", and "He'd Send In The Army". Herbie MannLive At The Whiskey 1969 – Unreleased Masters ... CD
Atlantic/Real Gone, 1969. New Copy 2 CDs ... On October 1, 2021 (delayed)
Never-heard music from one of the hippest groups ever led by flute man Herbie Mann – a killer lineup that includes Roy Ayers on vibes, Sonny Sharrock on guitar, and Steve Marcus on tenor! The tracks here are all previously unreleased – pulled from the same recordings that gave the world the Live At The Whiskey A Go Go album, but much more far-reaching overall – in a way that not only shows the full range of sounds the group could produce, but which also really brings out some individual moments of genius from each player! Roy's vibes are wonderful – with some very bold chromes, but his usual sense of warmth, too – which can make for a striking comparison with the edges in Sharrock's guitar and the soulfulness of Marcus' tenor. Linda Sharrock sings a bit on the record, but most of the album features long, extended jams from a group that also includes Miroslav Vitous on bass and Bruno Carr on drums – on titles that include "Untitled Jam", "Black Woman", "All Blues", "Portait Of Linda In Three Colors All Black", "Chain Of Fools", "Tangier/If I Were A Carpenter", "Scarborough Fair", "Philly Dog", and "Comin Home Baby/Battle Hymn Of The Republic". MiltinhoMi Proprio Yo ... CD
Sonus/Discobertas (Brazil), 1964. New Copy ... $9.99
An unusual album from Brazilian singer Miltinho – one of his few 60s efforts recorded in Spanish, and issued by the Sonus label in the Dominican Republic! Backings are more Latin-styled overall – handled by Pocho Perez with a nice mix of percussion and brass, which underscores the subtle drama in Miltinho's well-crafted vocals! The overall approach is quite different than most mainstream Brazilian work of the time – and titles include "Ninguem", "Teno Un Rinconcito", "Mi Mundo Cayo", "Dos Palabras", "Mujer De Musica", "Esta Noche", and "Despues De Ti". Rocafort (France), 1960s/1970s. New Copy 3 x 7 inch singles ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great collection of work from the Ansonia Records label – a half dozen of the hardest-grooving tracks on the label, most of which have never been on 7" singles before! Ansonia was one of the first independent Latin music companies on the New York scene, and it was also one of the most far-reaching too – an early outlet for new sounds coming from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, but also home to plenty of great Cuban artists, other Central American talents, and some of the up-and-coming giants on the New York scene! You'll get a great dose of all of that here – including some of the Latin soul that Ansonia recorded briefly in the late 60s – and titles include "Boogaloo Para Ti" by Joiseito Mateo, "Do You Want To Be Free" by Gilberto Sextet, "El Mejor Soy Yo" by Frankie Figueroa, "Calefaccion Aqui" by Cortijo, "Vitamina" by Noro Morales, and "A Mi Plin" by Mon Rivera. 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ FelaFela Box Set #5 (Why Black Man Dey Suffer/Noise For Vendor Mouth/Kalakuta Show/Excuse O/Ikoyi Blindness/Original Sufferhead/Overtake Don) (7LP set) ... LP
Knitting Factory, 1970s/1980s. New Copy 7LP Book & Poster ... Out Of Stock
A really great selection – seven fantastic albums by Fela Kuti, all packaged in a single set, with original artwork for every record! First up is Why Black Man Dey Suffer – a smoking lost Afrobeat LP! According to the notes EMI turned this album down when it was recorded in 1971, and we can't imagine what they were thinking. Two lengthy tracks that follow in the Fela template, the awesome title track rolling along at a nice laid back tempo with a prominent Rhodes part keeping the intro moving before the beat drops and the horns come in, while the second number "Ikoyi Mentality Versus Mushin Mentality" picks up the pace a bit, though there's still room for the syncopated percussion, crisp guitar and electric piano chords and bold horn lines to breathe, so they can mesh into an unstoppable groove! Noise For Vendor Mouth features two more long groovers – "Noise For Vendor Mouth" is a mostly instrumental tune about Fela's Kalakuta Republic, and its reputation in Nigeria; and "Mattress" is a rare stab at feminisim, as Fela explains the relation between sexuality and gender in African society. The cut's got a great tripped-out break on the intro, with these mad riffing horns that sound equally cool! Klakuta Show is one of Fela's classics, with the Africa 70 group firmly in place, and Henry Kofi and Tony Allen on percussion, and lots of nice tenor solos. Two long tracks – as you'd expect – and titles are "Kalakuta Show" and "Don't Make Ganran Ganran". The back cover also includes "real picture of police raid on Kalakuta Republic Africa 70 House and Fela's wound after"! Excuse O features two side-long tracks – "Excuse O" is a hard-jamming funky track, with a strange message about social relations; and "Mr Grammarticalogylisationalism Is The Boss" is another attack on education, drawn out over sad, slow, grooves with a building sound that's made even better by some weird instrumentation! On Ikoyi Blindness, Fela and Africa 70 are honed to razor-sharp perfection on this album from 1976! There's some incredible work on tenor sax – especially "Ikoyi Blindness", which begins with incredibly well-wrought solos that show Fela as an incredibly strong jazz-based player. The LP also includes "Gba Mi Leti Ki N'Dolow" – translated as "Slap Me Make I Get Money", an attack on the way that the rich bend the system of justice to their own needs. Next is the vinyl version of Original Sufferhead – with two long tracks, "Original Sufferhead" and "Power Show"! They both have amazing keyboards, with this strange other-worldly sound that makes it feel like Sun Ra has suddenly joined the group. The arrangements are amazingly tight, and a bit more sophisticated than usual. Last is Overtake Don Overtake Overtake – recorded in the late 80s, and probably one of Fela's best from the decade! The cut "Overtake Don Overtake Overtake" is a funky monster – spanning both sides of the record with a choppy drawn-out groove that features a cool spacey electric piano solo, sad wailing sax, and some catchy vocals on the hook. The track's right up there with Fela's best work ever – and the origin of the album makes it tougher to find than some of the older ones! LP, Vinyl record album
