✨✧ Don CherryRelativity Suite (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
JCOA/Klimt (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of Don Cherry's most spiritual, far-reaching projects – a wonderful record that builds both on his key avant work of the 60s, and some of the globally-inspired sounds he was cutting overseas! This date was done in close collaboration with the New York underground of the time – and the large group features work from a rich array of great musicians – including Charles Brackeen on soprano and alto sax, Carlos Ward on alto, Frank Lowe and Dewey Redman on tenors, Charlie Haden on bass, Carla Bley on piano, and Ed Blackwell on drums – working with additional string and percussion players in a sound that's completely sublime! There's a great ear here for unusual sonic twists and turns, yet these are mixed with some deeper organic tones, and some freer jazz passages – all to really ignite a great fire as the set rolls on. Titles include "March Of The Hobbits", "Tantra", "Desireless", "Infinite Gentleness", and "Trans-Love Airways". LP, Vinyl record album

Andrew HillLive At Montreux ... CD
Freedom (Germany), 1975. Used ... $11.99
Solo piano work from Andrew Hill – very different than his Blue Note recordings, but also a return to the avant garde after his more mainstream last session for Blue Note. The record features 4 long tracks – three originals, and a version of Ellington's "Come Sunday" – and they're all snakey and introspective, with an intimate approach to the keys that reminds us of solo Monk of the 60s! Other titles include "Relativity", "Nevertisis", and "Snake Hip Waltz". CD
(Out of print, small cutout notch through spine.)

WitchSalem's Rise ... LP
Eargasm/Gotta Groove, 1985. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
The only full length set issued by this underground Ohio group of the 80s – a group who've clearly learned some of the riffing metal ways of the LA bands of the period, but who make the whole thing come across with a much more homegrown vibe! The lead guitar of Ted George would have been right at home on some early Relativity release, but the rest of the group are more in a Homestead Records vibe – sonically, at least – given that singer Ace Matthews hits some lyrical modes that are right in keeping with the cover image. The mix of modes is really compelling – midwest kids caught between the two poles of the underground – and a reminder that for many folks at the time, metal and punk were often taken in equal doses. Titles include "Salem's Rise", "Hear The Thunder", "Teen Of Darkness", "Poison", "Beckon", "Lady Medusa", and "Will I See You Again". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Andrew HillNefertiti (Inner City) ... LP
East West/Inner City, 1979. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Andrew Hill's best records of the 70s – a soulful trio recording performed with Richard Davis on bass and Roger Blank on drums – and a real return to the glory of his 60s material! Hill's piano still has that fresh angular modern approach of his Blue Note sides – but the bass and drum work on the album ground it a bit more – adding in some additional rhythmic components, and giving the session the spiraling searching mode of some of the other Japanese trio sessions from the time, in the spirit of the best recordings on the East Wind label for which this gem was recorded! Hill wasn't always at his best in the decade, but he definitely shines here on some long, very expressive tracks – with titles that include "Mudflower", "Nefertiti", "Blue Black", and "Relativity". LP, Vinyl record album
(US Inner City pressing. Cover has a cut corner.)
