✨✧ Donna McGheeMake It Last Forever ... LP
Red Greg/We Want Sounds (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A holy grail – and one of the only records ever cut by Donna McGhee, an incredibly soulful club singer who worked with both Patrick Adams and Roy Ayers! This album's her legendary side for the team of Adams and Greg Carmichael – and it's got a sweet and mellow groove that's unlike anything else we can think of. Definitely in the vein of Sylvia Striplin and Pam Todd – but somehow even more soulful and better put together than work by those two singers. The album includes a killer 6 and a half minute version of Donna's classic "It Ain't No Big Thing", plus the tight groover "Mr Blindman", and the cuts "Do As I Do", "I'm A Love Bug", and "Make It Last Forever". Great all the way through – and a rare gem that's worth the price! LP, Vinyl record album

King CrimsonIn The Court Of The Crimson King ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $44.99
An album so heavy, it blew plenty of minds when first released at the end of the 60s! This set's the first-ever utterance from the King Crimson empire – the initial outing of the group, which featured Greg Lake on vocals, and lots of airy, darkly atmospheric guitar from the legendary Robert Fripp! The song structure is quite unusual – and the overall feel is less academically tangled than some of the later records – a feature that makes this album much more sought out by mainstream rockers looking for an intro to the group than some of the later sets. Yet having said that, there's also a pretty amazing approach here – somewhat obtuse, and definitely not looking for any radio edit hits – more just magical musings from a very unique ensemble. Peter Sinfield contributed the lyrics, which are sung by Lake – and Michael Giles handles drums and percussion, while Ian MacDonald plays flute, sax, keyboards, and more. Titles include "Moonchild", "21st Century Schizoid Man", "I Talk To The Wind", "Epitaph", and "Court Of The Crimson King". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousFire Over Babylon – Dread, Peace & Conscious Sounds At Studio One ... CD
Studio One/Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $19.99 26.99
Some of the most righteous sounds ever recorded at the legendary Studio One label in Jamaica – 70s music that marks a time when the company was moving into some of the more thoughtful, meaningful lyrics that rose to prominence during the rasta generation! The shift is no surprise, given that Bob Marley once recorded for Studio One – but by the time of these tracks, Marley had risen to international fame on Island Records – helping to open the door for a huge new audience for the message and the music, which Studio One was only happy to address with great tracks like this! The set's every bit as great as the other collections from the label on Soul Jazz – handled with equally thoughtful track selection and detailed notes, to support an 18 track set that includes "Sufferation" by Trevor Clarke, "I Am A Revolutionist" by Freddie McGregor, "Burning In My Soul" by The Silvertones, "Mr Jolly Man" by Horace Andy, "Things & Time" by Wailing Souls, "Serious Thing" by The Gladiators, "So Many Problems" by The Viceroys, "Inner Peace" by Pablove Black, "Rock But Don't Fall" by Wailing Souls, "Jah Jah Fire" by Devon Russell, and "Give Me Back Me Language & Me Culture" by Im & Count Ossie. VariousStudio One Lovers Rock ... CD
Studio One/Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
A set that offers up a slightly different look at the Studio One label – and at the lovers rock style of reggae that broke big at the end of the 70s! Studio One is often known for its rough-edged early classics – but right from the start, the label had a great ear for soul – which proved a perfect fit for the sorts of mellow steppers that made lovers rock so great! And before you think that "lovers" means "soft" or "commercial" – think again, as these cuts are prime reggae at its best – and often represent a later current that kept the rocksteady vibe going strong, especially with the expressive strengths of the right sort of lead singers of groups serving up the tune. The work here is more down to earth than the headier themes of the roots reggae generation – often very personal in approach – on titles that include "Tumbling Tears (12" disco mix)" by Alton Ellis, "I'll Be Gone" by Horace Andy, "Oh Me Oh My" by Jerry Jones, "Yours Until Tomorrow" by Carlton & The Shoes, "I Hold The Handle" by The Heptones, "Wanna Be Free" by Horace Andy, "Rock All Night" by Billy Cole, "Ghetto Girl" by Sugar Minott, "Soulful Music" by The Invaders, "My Ting A Ling (12" disco mix)" by The Heptones, "I Was Born To Be Loved" by The Righteous Flames, "Truly" by Marcia Griffiths, and "I Don't Know" by Freddie McGregor. Soul Jazz/Studio One (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
An excellent compilation that's very much in the spirit of the 100% Dynamite sets on Soul Jazz! This time, Soul Jazz dig through the vaults of the legendary Studio One catalog – some of the most important reggae and rocksteady ever recorded, virtually all of it produced under the tutelage of Clement "Coxone" Dodd. Much of this material has been floating around over the years, but we'd be hard pressed to think of a better collection of it – especially when considering the excellent fidelity of the set, which is way better than an of Dodd's own reissues of the material. Plus, the folks at Soul Jazz have gone out of their way to put together the tracks as an extremely well-thought out introduction to the music, not just a scattered batch of tunes that happened to be available. The set also includes a recent interview with Clement Dodd, plus loads of great rocksteady and early reggae tracks. Titles include "Surfin" by Ernest Ranglin, "Real Rock" by Sound Dimension, "Feel Like Jumping" by Marcia Griffiths, "Greedy G" by Brentford All Stars, "Village Soul" by Lennie Hibbert, "Ethiopia" by Cedric Brooks, "Crabwalking" by Prince Jazzbo, "Hot Milk" by Jackie Mittoo, "Badder Dan Dem" by Lone Ranger, and "Bobby Bobylon" by Freddy McGregor. ✨✧ Greg WootenMarred for Life! – Defaced Record Covers From The Collection Of Greg Wooten (hardcover) ... Book
J & L Books, 2019. New Copy Book ... Out Of Stock
That's marred for life, not married for life – a very fitting title for this cool book that features strangely-altered record covers that collector Greg Wooten has discovered over the years! Some have a fair bit of new artwork – as in the brilliant Billy May cover on the cover – others are more casual, sometimes slapdash – but together, the images in the book work as a brilliant document of the way that people interact with records at a level that goes way past just listening to music! People own records, and make them part of their landscape – and that sometimes involves transforming the covers with their own touches – either augmenting the original artwork, or inscribing them with a sense of possession, or maybe making some sort of lewd commentary on the image. The book includes dozens of examples of such changed-over covers – all in a well-done hardcover volume, full color throughout! Book

VariousDisco Love 3 – Even More Rare Disco & Soul Uncovered – Compiled By Al Kent ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $9.99 15.99
Plenty of disco love here – a really heartfelt selection of rare club tunes – great little numbers that are as funky and soulful as they are obscure! These aren't the disco hits of the late 70s, but they're also not clunkers that are just rare either – and instead, they're great little tunes that hardly got discovered back in the day – but are brought together here in a wicked collection by collector Al Kent! There's a freshness to the material that takes us way past the obvious – funky basslines, snapping drums, and lots of wonderful keyboards and guitar – all wrapped up in a near-perfect way, and usually set to some smoking vocals too. Many of the cuts here are rare to even our crate-tuned ears – and titles include "Mighty Gents" by The Mighty Gents, "Hungry" by Sandy's Gang, "Oh Baby/Get On Down" by Bo Galigher & TSB, "Something About You" by Moses, "Disco Fever (part 3)" by Rhond Durand, "Disco Music" by Sil Austin, "Hustle On Down (part 3)" by Michael Legrair, "I Want To Be With You" by Gregory Andre & Two Plus Three, "How Long Is Forever" by Frank & James, "Human" by Neo Experience, "Waiting In the Wings" by Marion Javius, and "Is It Wrong" by Magnetic Force. 2CD version features a full mix of all tracks by Al Kent – plus an unmixed CD with 15 individual tracks. An early killer from Johnny Griffin – a stripped-down quartet session for Blue Note, done in a format that really gave him plenty of room to open up! The rhythm section is a powerful trio led by Sonny Clark on piano, and featuring bassist Paul Chambers alongside the obscure drummer Kenny Dennis – but it's Griff's tone and conception that dominates the set – really blowing in a style that combines the soulful and the modern with incredible spontaneity, all wrapped up in a beautiful early Andy Warhol cover! Tracks are all longish, and titles include "The Congregation", "Latin Quarter", "I'm Glad There Is You", and "Main Spring". CD also features the bonus track "I Remember You". CD

Steeplechase (Denmark), 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
Gregory Tardy's turned into a reedman with a great ability for complex soundshapes – these beautiful phrasings and passages from his tenor sax – yet always delivered in a way that never fails to swing with soul! On this excellent set, Tardy and his musical associates paint these lovely pictures in sound – but also find a way to groove in the process – stepping off especially well on Gregory's own original compositions, which are taken in very long, vivid performances! The whole lineup is great – and includes Alex Norris on trumpet and Sam Sadigursky on flute – both players whose lines with Tardy really give the album a lot of color and life – plus Bruce Barth on piano, Sean Conly on bass, and Jaimeo Brown on drums. As always with the Steeplechase label these days, there's a real "something extra" to the record – a special quality to the whole thing that continues to make the label one of the most important indies in jazz. Titles include "Gabriel's Groove", "Chasing After The Wind", "The Evidence Of Things Not Seen", "Companion Of My First Heartbeat", "Dance For Marie Do", and "Ashes". CD

BrahjaBrahja (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RR Gems (Estonia), 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $29.99
Deeply textured jazz from Devin Brahja Waldman – working here in a mix of acoustic and electric modes that's not unlike some of our favorite recent material from Greg Foat – but much more complex overall, and with a stronger spiritual vibe! Waldman handles various saxes, piano, and keyboards – in a lineup that's also heavy on more keys and percussion – but always presented in a way that's layered and cohesive – not as much individual performance within the group, but an overall sound – so that familiar elements are a bit abstracted, even when the songs are tuneful and forward-flowing. There's a few moments that get slightly avant, but most of the work is in darker, moodier territory – and also features guest work from Daniel Carter on soprano sax, Margaret Morris on voice, and Sam Shalabi on guitar. Titles include "Medicine Woman", "Welcom To Wohlom", "Return Of The Good Enemy", "In The Mess", and "Just Passing Through". LP, Vinyl record album

Two tremendous soundtracks from the mighty Francois De Roubaix – easily one of our favorite film composers of all time! Dernier Domicile Connu is wonderful – with a famous theme that mixes stepping strings and funky drums in this really magnificent way – before moving between spare instrumental moments and the return of the great theme – all with that incredible ear for space and sound that made Francois so different than so many of his contemporaries! Une Aller Simple has a few more conventional modes, but still hits all these cool moments too – and lots of that subtle funk that made De Roubaix ahead of his time – great use of electric bass under more standard instruments. Titles include "Jerk Carcerel", "Aspic", "Blues Pour Nicoletta", "La Vitesse La Mort", "Dernier Domicile Connu", "Gregg", "Les Maniaques", "Por Qui Porquoi", and "Jeanne Et Marceau". The story of the beat generation – from a writer who was a key part of the movement, and knew just about anyone who was worth his salt at the time! Allen Ginsberg was the poet whose work helped set first to the beat scene in the late 50s – and was one of the most well-traveled, well-connected members of the movement – which quickly becomes clear here, as you follow Ginsberg through a mix of history and memoir, often peppered with a great deal of quotations from writings of his colleagues – in chapters that look at Jack Kerouac, William S Burroughs, Gregory Corso, Lucien Carr, Neal Cassady, and many others! The book's based on a course that Ginsberg has taught over the years, and is given a stronger sense of structure by editor Bill Morgan – as things spin out over 435 pages in this hardcover edition, which also includes notes on all the works cited throughout. Wide Hive, 2016. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
Not a retrospective of the music of Throttle Elevator Music – as you might mistake from the title – but instead a fresh new album that features the group working tremendously with the mighty Kamasai Washington! Washington isn't just a guest, but a key member of the group – and he really helps to push forward that deepening sound they've developed since their first release – a huge evolution that only gets better when Kamasai's on board. Washington plays tenor on the record, and contributes songs and arrangements – and some of the vibe of the set is maybe a small combo take on territory he explored on The Epic album – proud and righteous, with a very uplifting spirit. Other group members include Erik Jekabson on flugelhorn and trumpet, Ava Mendoza on guitar, Matt Mongtomery on bass and piano, and Thomas McCree on drums – and producer Gregory Howe also contributes songs and arrangements. Light In The Attic, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99 31.98
A look at Memphis soul music that goes way beyond any Stax, Goldwax, or Atlantic Records collections you might own – partly because all of the tracks here are from a time in the city when all those other labels had stopped recording! Memphis is usually remembered for a 60s/early 70s stretch when the city was brimming over with record labels, studios, and top soul talent – but that latter aspect of the scene didn't stop when the record companies went bust – and instead, it just went underground, as lesser-known artists kept on developing great new sounds and styles! As you'd guess from the title, most of the work here is in a modern soul mode – often with rhythms that have a bit of boogie or club in the mix, but also with some of that developing southern soul approach that was maybe more strongly associated with the Malaco label down in Jackson. The scope of music is great, and the set's got very detailed notes on this under-documented time in the history of Memphis soul music – to support a great tracklist that includes "Can We Melt The Ice" by Morris, "You Mean Everything To Me" by Sweet Pearl, "The Doctor" by LA, "Stone Crush On You" by OT Skyes, "What Does It Take To Know A Woman Like You" by Greg Mason, "Always" by Silk Satin & Lace, "Right Thing" by Kick, "Convict Me" by Libra, "Slice Of Heaven" by Cato, "I'm Choosing You" by Magic Morris, "No Seat Dancin" by Frankie Alexander, and "Keep It To Yourself" by Captain Fantastic & Starr Fleet. A soaring batch of disco gems, club cuts, and undiscovered nuggets – all pulled together to make a set that's even better than the first entry in this Disco Wonderland series! DJ Andy Smith and associates bring together a great array of fresh tracks from back in the day – not massive disco hits, but also not the kind of rare gems that maybe never made the cut for a good reason – and instead, the tracks here work together perfectly, and even get a few special mixes along the way by Smith and the crew, which includes a few contemporary cuts that fit perfectly next to the vintage material. Titles include "Get Up & Dance (Bad Bikini re-edit)" by Disco Circus, "You're The Best" by The Emotions, "Heaven" by The Gibson Brothers, "Dreamin" by Greg Henderson, "You Don't Know (Crissy Kybosh rmx)" by Serious Intention, "For The Love Of Money" by Armada Orchestra, "You & I" by Ronnie Jones, "Sweet Dynamite" by Claudja Barry, "Dance Freak" by Chain Reaction, "Night Of My Life" by Full Intention & Nick Reach Up with Jazz Morley, "I'm In Love" by Cela, "Love Don't Come Easy" by New Jersey Connection, "Lost Without You (Andy Smith re-edit)" by Will Sessions & Amp Fiddler, and "Ghetto Disco" by Ted Taylor. 2CD version features one CD of the songs mix, another unmixed! How Do You Are, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredibly cool collection – one that offers up all sorts of weird and wonderful soul music covers of mainstream mellow 70s hits – new versions of the famous tunes that pull them strongly over to the world of R&B, often with results that are better than the original versions! The set is both a great demonstration of how much soul there was lurking in the original AOR productions of the mid 70s, and how strongly those currents could be unlocked even more in the right hands – as you'll hear in these sublime takes on tunes by Hall & Oates, Toto, Seals & Crofts, The Doobie Brothers, and other 70s pop giants. Titles include "Dirty Work" by Pointer Sisters, "Minute By Minute" by Peabo Bryson, "Georgie Porgy" by Side Effect, "He's Gone" by Dee Dee Bridgewater, "Summer Breeze" by Main Ingredient, "Lazy Nina" by Greg Phillinganes, "In The Way" by Brothers Johnson, "This Is It" by Millie Jackson, "Takin It To The Streets" by Quincy Jones, "I Hope You'll Be Very Unhappy Without Me" by Tavares, "God Only Knows" by Betty Lavette, "Let Em In" by Billy Paul, and "A Love Of Your Own" by The Ebonys. Posi tone, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from Michael Dease – a player who seems to get better and better with each new record, and who's clearly becoming one of the top trombonists on the planet! Dease has a dexterity here that's amazing, and an ability to hit a sense of soul that's wonderful too – a quality that's augmented by the organ work on the record from Jim Alfredson, which shows that a trombone can groove equally well as a tenor in the company of a Hammond! Other players include Gregory Tardy on tenor, and Anthony Stanco on trumpet – and a number of tracks have percussion added to the sharp drums of Ulysses Owens Jr, which makes for a mighty nice groove. Most titles are originals – and tunes include "The Next Level", "Climb The Mountain", "Zanderfied", "Lake Toxaway Getaway", "Ritmo De Brevard", and "Word To The Wise". CD

Strata East/Manufactured, 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rare spiritual jazz by reed player Milton Marsh – one of the harder-to-find albums on Strata East – and one of just a couple incredible records to Marsh's name! Obscurity aside, this is prime Strata East – with some sprawling moments in a larger band formation that go just far out enough, but an overall approach that's pretty inside, very much in the label's strong 70s soul jazz tradition. There's a pretty large cast of players in action, including some legendary ones like saxophonist David Ware, percussionist Greg Bandy, Cedric Lawson on piano and others. Titles include "Vonda's Tune", the incredible "Monism" with its spoken word excerpt from Hazrat Inayat Khan's Sufi Message, nicely read by Marsh himself over an amazing mix of soulful strings and tense interplay, plus "Metamorphosis", "Community Music", "Sabotage 3 Preparations" and "Ode to Nzinga". A lost masterpiece! CD

Wide Hive, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Flux & Solder", "Liminality", "Playing The Alleyway", "February Drift", "Subtract Limited", and "Rapid Rotation". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousFeeling High – The Psychedelic Sound Of Memphis ... CD
Big Beat (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An amazing look at the psychedelic scene in late 60s Memphis – music that's really mindblowing for the time, yet which often never got its due – given the stronger mainstream focus on Memphis as a hub for blues and soul! (In other words, had any of these cats hit the Sunset Strip in the late 60s, they would have been huge!) Given that Memphis already had a strong studio scene in place – where some of these musicians worked on other sessions – the recordings here are incredibly advanced – often full of cool production techniques and other little twists and turns – all elements that take already-great fuzzy, freaky, hairy rock and roll – and turn it into something even more incredible by the time it's caught on tape! Most of these names are new to our ears, and the package is definitely a historical treasure trove – as pleasing to our record collectors' sensibilities as the music is to our ears. Sound quality is excellent, and many numbers have not been issued before – titles that include "Eat Me Alive" and "We're In Town" by The Goatdancers, "Crazy Man's Woman" and "Shoo Shoo Shoo Fly" by Greg McCarley, "Blue Music Box" by Changin Tymes, "For Your Love" by the Honey Jug, "Rockin In The Same Old Boat" by Triple X, "Deja Vu" by Judy Bramlett, "Come On Along & Dream" by The Poor Little Rich Kids, "Flying Horse Of Louisiana" by Knowbody Else, "Dancing Girl" by The 1st Century, and "Ticket To Ride" by Mother Roses – plus an advertisement for The Goatdancers too! Gregg AllmanLaid Back ... LP
Capricorn, 1973. Very Good Gatefold ... $11.99
Greg Allman's excellent solo debut – all the more impressive given that it came out just weeks apart from the Allman Brothers' classic Brothers & Sisters – here's a southern rock legend stepping out and showing different sides of his immense talent around the same time his band was also near a creative peak! Greg's uniquely expressive voice is in the spotlight here, on tunes that touch on laid back southern rock, but gospel blues & soul tinged, too, sans guitar heroics for the most part. Includes the eternally great "Midnight Rider", "Queen Of Hearts", "Please Call Home", "Don't Mess Up A Good Thing", a really cool country rock take on "These Days", "Multi-Colored Lady", "All My Friends" and certainly only of the fresher takes "Will The Circle Be Unbroken". Tom ZeEstudando O Pagode – Na Opereta Segregamulher E Amor ... CD
Luaka Bop, 2005. Used ... $3.99
A mighty new effort from the amazing Tom Ze – a wild, heaving stylistic sprawl that's as dense and wonderful as his other recent efforts for Trama – but far more ambitious than anything he's done in many years! If you know anything about Tom Ze, you know that the man's aural art is quite difficult to describe, from the post-Tropicalia heyday to today! This set is a 16 song operatic suite that seems to be a stylistic sibling to his great (and quite rare) Estudando O Samba album from the mid 70s. Tom is taking on Greek mythology and age-old issues of gender oppression here – on an album produced with a sly, sinister groove by Jair Olivera. Incredible stuff – with all of the jerky, pulsating avant funk and leftfield grooves of Tom Ze at his recent best! The tracks are divided into 3 sections (Primero Ato, Segundo Ato and Terciero Ato) and include "Ave Dor Maria", "Estupido Rapaz", "O Amor E Um Rock", "Elaeu", "Para La Do Para", "Prazer Carnal", "Teatro (Dom Quixote)", "A Volta Do Trem Das Onze" and more! ✨✧ Roy BuchananProphet – The Unreleased First Polydor Album (orange & black fire vinyl pressing) (2021 Black Friday Pressing) ... LP
Polydor/Real Gone, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... On November 26, 2021
A fantastic early solo project from guitarist Roy Buchanan – recorded for Polydor at the start of the 70s, but never issued at the time! We're not sure why the label slept on the set, as it's a searing little killer right from the start – done in a gritty mode that's far hipper than some of the other blues rock of the period – never that cliched, with some swampy elements, a few funky touches, and a strong hint of the farther-reaching modes that Buchanan would hit in later years. Roy sings, as does a young Charlie Daniels, who plays second guitar and also wrote many of the tracks – and the set also features some vocals from Joe DiGregorio, and keyboards from Bob Wilson. Titles include "Humbug Down On The River", "Billy Joe Young", "The Story Of Isaac", "Black Autumn", "Funky Junky", "There'll Always Be", "I Desire You", and "Pain". 2CD set also features a March 1971 session, and bonus tracks too – with titles that include "Roy's Bluz", "Shotgun", "Dual Soliloquy", "CC Rider (live)", "Down By The River (live)", "After Hours/The Messiah Will Come Again", and "Sweet Dreams". John DokesTrue Love ... CD
Rondette Jazz, 2019. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A hell of a great record from jazz singer John Dokes – an artist who is up to classic standards of phrasing and swing, but who also works here with a very contemporary sense of arrangement – so much so that the songs here are really transformed by his presentation! Dokes fits into a small but elite group of contemporary jazz singers who really know how to get it done – artists like Milton Suggs, Jazzmeia Horn, or Gregory Porter – really bringing something new to the form that's all their own, but not in a way that trashes all those who went before – a very difficult balancing act, but one that Dokes does superbly here. Part of the credit goes to pianist Steve Einerson, who arranged all of the tracks – played by a quartet that also includes Mark Gross on alto, Alex Claffy on bass, and Lawrence Leathers on drums. Titles include Dokes' original "Cool Enough" – plus great takes on "Nobody Else But Me", "Never Let Me Go", "You Don't Know What Love Is", "You Are Too Beautiful", "Eleanor Rigby", and "Everything Must Change". A really unique record, and one with a very unusual pedigree – as the group features key members of some acts from the Ivory Coast in the late 70s, mixed with various Motown session players in the studio – all in a way that offers up a completely different take on Cali soul from the time! The African artists contribute a lot of vocals and work on kora that's especially beautiful – and the other players are led by Gregg Middleton on bass, who also does all the arrangements – and the combo features Ernie Fields on saxes, Nolan Smith on trumpet, and Fred Wesley on trombone! An unusual album from bassist Michael Formanek, served up in songs of varying length – many quite short, but working together as a whole to really live up to the wide open spaces of the title! Formanek's got a nice bounce in his bass at times, but balances things out with freer runs too – given all these surprisingly sharp edges by the alto and soprano sax of Greg Osby, very different than his later Blue Note years – and colored in with the guitar work of Wayne Krantz and violin of Mark Feldman. Drummer Jeff Hirshfield snaps things into action when needed – and titles include "Wild Dreams", "Coffee Time", "Cloak & Dagger", "The Sage", "Yahoo Justice", "Edge To Edge", "Fantasy Scape", "Outerlude", and "Soul Dancing". Aretha FranklinAmazing Grace ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $59.99
A legendary album – one that has Aretha Franklin returning to her roots in gospel music – but working with all the strength and power that Atlantic Records had to offer! From early years recording as a young voice alongside her father's congregation, Aretha has matured into a hell of a lead singer – and really knocks it out of the park here alongside the mighty James Cleveland, and the Southern California Community Choir! While it might have been nice to record the set back home in Detroit, the California setting for the material works perfectly to elevate Franklin to a special place in the heavens – tying together her heritage in beautiful ways, and making for another great stride forward in her career during the 70s. One of the best ideas ever for a soul music concept album – with titles that include "Mary Don't You Weep", "How I Got Over", "Precious Memories", "Wholy Holy", "Never Grow Old", "Amazing Grace", and Climbing Higher Mountains". Transversales Disques/P-Vine (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... About October 28, 2021
A gem of a record from the legendary Pharoah Sanders – a set that's recorded right at the tail end of his famous years for Impulse Records, and which has all the best qualities of his last few records for that label! The vibe here is a lot like Elevation or Love Is In Us All – a return to warmer, more spiritual modes, with less of the completely outside qualities of Sanders' early 70s material – a great flow, lots of modal energy in the rhythms, and that mix of soul and freedom that reminds us again that Pharoah is one of the founders of the spiritual jazz style! The group features Danny Mixon on piano and organ, Calvin Hill on bass, and Greg Bandy on drums – and the music was all recorded by ORTF Radio, with fantastic fidelity – and this reissue is completely legit, and remastered from the original tapes. Titles include "Love Is Here", "Farrell Tune", "Love is Everywhere", "The Creator Has A Master Plan", and "I Want To Talk About You". CD

Wide Hive, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We certainly hope this isn't the final floor for Throttle Elevator Music, as we've always enjoyed the many sounds the group has given us over the years – styles served up here on a record that's almost a testament to the collaborative growth of the ensemble over the past decade or so, as the album brings together recordings made over various years, with new work added in recently to complete the set! As usual, Gregory Howe is at the core – handling most of the arrangements and overseeing the recording, with equal help from longtime musical partner Matt Montgomery on bass – opening up into a lineup that also includes Kamasi Washington on tenor, Erik Jekabson on trumpet, Kasey Knudsen on alto and tenor, and Mike Blankenship on a bit of Farfisa organ! You can definitely feel Washington's presence when he's on a session, but the overall sound of the record is equally nice – a real evolution of the group's sound from the start, maybe served up in part by the more recent touches added to the mix by Howe. Vintage live material from Greg Sage and The Wipers – played with that special intensity that made them such a crucial link in the American underground scene of the 80s – even if they didn't always get their due until many years later! There's a sound here that's almost a bridge between earlier Cali punk and some of the work that was beginning to emerge on the Homestead Records scene – imbued with a focus and intensity that's helped it stay relevant over the years, while so many of the group's contemporaries were falling into dated politics or gimmicky modes that quickly got old.
