JD AllenToys/Die Dreaming ... CD
Savant, 2020. New Copy ... $15.99 16.98
Boldly brilliant work from tenor saxophonist JD Allen – a player who's always been great, but who seems to be hitting a whole new side of his powers in recent years! The set continues a trio format explored by Allen on a previous date – and like that one, it's got a wonderfully unfettered feel – just the bass of Ian Kenselaar and drums of Nic Cacioppo setting the stage, while JD soars out in these long, soulful solos – filled with energy and power that we might not have imagined a decade ago, making some of his strongest statements as a leader to date! The set includes a fair bit of original titles, but these are just more like sketches for the open energy of the tenor – on titles that include "Die Dreaming", "Red Label", "Toys", "Elegua", and "You're My Thrill". Tracks are nice and long – with that mix of sharp skills and whimsey that made this period of Gong so unique – and titles include the "Crystal Gnome" and "Radio – Gnome I & II" suites, plus "Mister Pyxie", "Deep In The Sky", "You Can't Kill Me", and "Titicaca". Serge ChaloffBaritone Sax Master – A Proper Introduction To Serge Chaloff ... CD
Proper (UK), Late 40s. Used ... $7.99
Hard-blown baritone from the great Serge Chaloff – one of the greatest jazz players on his instrument, heard here in a set of key late 40s recordings! Serge is perhaps best known for his 2 albums on Captiol – Blue Serge and Boston Blowup – but this collection offers up a great range of earlier 78rpm sessions, recorded for labels that include Motif, Mercer, Keynote, and Savoy – and it stands as a great complement to Capitol sessions. The sides a great progression from swing to bop – and feature Chaloff with players that include Al Cohn, Red Rodney, Allen Eager, Al Haig, George Wallington, Ralph Burns, and Nat Pierce. 22 tracks in all – with titles that include "Blue Serge", "Curbstone Shuffle", "Pennies From Heaven", "Gabardine & Serge", "Serge's Urge", "A Bar A Second", and "We The People". ✨✧ Stan GetzStan Getz (Prestige – early singles/Stan Getz With Cal Tjader) ... CD
Prestige, 1949/1950/1958. Used ... $9.99
A 2LP set that compiles early recordings made by Getz for Prestige – about half of them titles that were issued on early singles, combined with material from the album Stan Getz With Cal Tjader. The early singles feature a few tunes with the "brothers" style sound – Brew Moore, Allen Eager, Zoot Sims, and Al Cohn on tenor with Stan – plus some other quartet sides. The Cal Tjader album is killer record from the late 50s – and one that hints at all the sides Stan would take in later years: his bossa sides, his vibes quartet with Gary Burton, and the playful lyricism of his recordings with Chick Corea. The set was recorded in San Francisco, when Stan had that great bassist Scott LaFaro in his group, and when he was brought into the studio by Fantasy to meet with local talents like Cal Tjader, Eddie Duran, and Vince Guaraldi. Billy Higgins is also added on drums, giving the set a lively songlike sound that's just great. The group works incredibly well together, and it's a shame they only really gelled for this rare non-Verve session. Titles include "Big Bear", "Crow's Nest", "Lady In Red", "Prezervation", "Five Brothers", "Crazy Chords", "Long Island Sound", "My Buddy", and "Ginza Samba". CD

Sun RaContinuation (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Saturn/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1963. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Mindblowing music from Sun Ra & The Arkestra – sounds recorded during the same marathon session that gave the world the records Other Planes Of There, When Sun Comes Out, and When Angels Speak Of Love – but titles that are much more obscure overall! The initial release of the material featured very misleading notes, but the true details of the session are even more impressive – as Ra plays a variety of unusual instruments alongside piano – including the piano strings, space organ, and clavioline – alongside some sublime straight horn work from John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and oboe, Pat Patrick on baritone, Danny Davis on alto and clarinet, Walter Miller on trumpet, Robert Cummings on bass clarinet, and Ali Hasaan on trombone! The lineup here has that raw power the Arkestra first unleashed after their initial move to New York – almost a sense of new freedom in the new environment – even at a time when they weren't clicking on a financial level, but still continued to push forward with new ideas in music! Some passages have this great approach that links the cosmic ideas of the Arkestra with older traditions of jazz soloing – while others reflect the growing concern of the group with new textures and sounds – making for some very impressive elements on both the horns and percussion. The group is completed by Ronnie Boykins on bass, Art Jenkins on space voice and percussion, and Tommy Hunter on drums, percussion, and some mighty nice reverb – and titles include "Biosphere Blues", "Intergalactic Research", "Earth Primitive Earth", "New Planet", and "Continuation To Jupiter Festival". Beautiful 2CD reissue features sublime sounds from the original tapes, remastered – plus a full bonus CD of unreleased tracks that include "Blue York", "Conversation Of The Universe", "Red Planet Mars", "Cosmic Rays/Next Stop Mars", "The Myth", "Meteor Shower", "Infinity", "The Beginning Of", and "Endlessness". Island, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A great slice of New Orleans soul from the 70s – a record that replicates the "Indian" culture in the Mardi Gras scene – and which is most notable for featuring work by The Meters as well! The groove here is kind of Meters-styled funk, mixed with some fuller New Orleans mode – as the core Wild Tchoupitoulas group get a nice kick at the core – which makes their lyrics and calls come off even better than in a live setting! The album also gets kickass production from Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn – and is one of the crowning funk jewels in Toussaint's crown for the 70s. Tracks include "Brother John", "Indian Red", "Hey Hey", "Hey Mama", "Meet De Boys On The Battlefront", and a version of "Hey Pocky Way". LP, Vinyl record album

Red CallenderLowest – The Music Of Red Callender ... LP
Metro, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Given that Red was one of the few tuba players in jazz, this album certainly was "The Lowest" – at least in terms of tone, as Red spends a lot of time rumbling around in bottom notes! The style's less clunky than you might think, though, as the setting is late 50s LA – with chamber-type arrangements that match Red's tuba with more breezy players like Buddy Collette, Bill Pitman, Gerald Wilson, Gerald Wiggins, and Billy Bean – who work with Red in a mode that's almost like some of the Chico Hamilton albums on Pacific Jazz, a mixture of jazz and whimsical instrumention with a tightly arranged and haunting feel. Tracks include "Of Thee I Sing", "The Lowest", "Pickin Pluckin Whistlin & Walkin", "Another Blues", "Volume Too", and "Five Four Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

John CarterDauwhe ... LP
Black Saint (Italy), 1982. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Richly complicated work from reedman John Carter – working here at a level that's a great change from his smaller combo work of the early years! Carter plays clarinet throughout – at the head of an octet with a very cerebral feel – a group who almost bring more of a serious music sort of style into play at times, yet still have enough jazz-based energy in their work too. The approach is a bit like that of Muhal Richard Abrams or Henry Threadgill – but the set also has a definite LA underground bent too, thanks to work by Bobby Bradford on cornet, Red Callender on tuba, James Newton on flutes, Charles Owen on soprano sax, Roberto Miranda on bass, William Jeffrey on drums, and Luis Peralta on waterphone and percussion. Titles include "Dauwhe", "Enter From The East", "Soft Dance", "The Mating Ritual", and "Ode To The Flower Maiden". LP, Vinyl record album

Buddy CollettePolynesia ... LP
Music & Sound/Trunk (UK), Late 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A unique, rare, and wonderful album from reedman Buddy Collette – very different than any of his better-known work of the 50s – and a complex little set that really shows off a whole new side of his talents! The album was issued by a tiny label away from the LA scene – and has Buddy blending jazz and exotica, but at a level that's way hipper than any of the more mainstream bachelor pad records of the period – maybe even pointing the way towards the very cool records that Buddy would cut overseas. The group is great – very hip – with Gerald Wilson on trumpet, Gene Cipriano on reeds, Justin DiTullo on cello, Red Callender on bass and tuba, Earl Palmer on drums, and either Al Viola or Billy Bean on guitar – very versatile jazz musicians who really follow Buddy's lead on the unusual tunes. Colette himself plays flute and a bit of clarinet – and the set also features some cool vocals from singer Marni Nixon. The "Polynesian Suite" features a bit of narration – and other tunes include "Flight", "Gaugin", "Singapore Sling", and "Japanese Suite". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Maynard FergusonMaynard Ferguson Octet ... LP
EmArcy, 1955. Very Good- ... $7.99
Maynard Ferguson's blowing full steam ahead here – working with an octet that's heavy on horn parts, but in a richly creative way! Ferguson nicely shows off some of his best influences from the 50s large group scene in LA – and gets some key help on the record from Bill Holman, who wrote almost all the tracks on the date, and no doubt arranged most of the material too. Holman's horn isn't heard on the set, but other players are equally great – and include Bob Gordon on baritone, Georgie Auld on tenor, Herb Geller on alto, Milt Bernhart on trombone, and Conte Candoli on trumpet – supported by a rhythm section that features Ian Bernhard on piano, Red Callender on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums. As usual for the Emarcy years, Maynard plays a host of instruments – trumpet, bass trumpet, and valve trombone – and titles include "20 Rue De Madrid", "Super G", "Yeah", "What Was Her Name", "My New Flame", and "Inter-Space". A sweetly stepping session of bluesy jazz vocals from Jeannie Cheatham – outwardly a trad-oriented record, but done here with some nice light west coast touches that really capture the best of the Concord groove of the early 80s. There's a gentle swing to the tracks that reminds us of some of the Ernestine Anderson Concord work from the period, and Jeannie plays a bit of piano as well as sings – and is joined by Jimmy on bass trombone, Red Callender on bass and tuba, and Charles McPherson on alto sax. The rhythms have a fluid feel that are especially great for Hubbard's approach – and are handled by Mulgrew Miller on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Carl Allen on drums. Columbia/Get On Down, 1959. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Charles Mingus' true classics – and an essential album in any jazz collection! This 1959 gem was recorded by Mingus at a key point in his career – when he was rising from the jazz underground into the ranks of America's elite jazzmen, penning some of the most challenging work of his career, and working with incredible younger players that interpreted his work with a great deal of fire! The tracks are a bit more tightly arranged than work on some of Mingus' previous work for labels like Atlantic and Bethlehem, but that also gives them a razor-sharp emotional edge that's carried off perfectly by players who include John Handy and Shafi Hadi on alto saxes, Booker Ervin on tenor, Willie Dennis and Jimmy Knepper on trombones, Horace Parlan on piano, and Dannie Richmond on drums. The album is filled with key Mingus classics – like "Better Git It In Your Soul", "Boogie Stop Shuffle", "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", and "Fables of Faubus" – plus "Self Portrait In Three Colors", "Open Letter To Duke", and "Bird Call". This fantastic 2LP set features a bonus album – with 6 tracks never before on vinyl – including "GG Train", "Pedal Point Blues", "Girl Of My Dreams", and alternates of "Better Git It In Your Soul", "Bird Calls", and "Jelly Roll". The title certainly gets it right – as the lovely Juliette Greco was perhaps the most distinct voice on the left bank of Paris in the postwar years – a singer who forever helped transform the sound of chanson, and pave the way for the sexy styles of other singers to come in the 60s! Greco's style here is simple, but powerful – never as overly-emotive as some of her contemporaries, and always presented with an open, honest knowledge of the world's charms and its challenges – which really comes through in the well-selected batch of work for the set. Tracks are from an assortment of rare French EP releases, and the package features 26 titles in all – tracks that include "Accordeon", "Les Feuilles Mortes", "Jolie Mome", "Je Hais Les Dimanches", "Souls Le Ciel De Paris", "Je Suis Comme Je Suis", "C'Etait Bien", "Chanson Pour L'Auvergnat", "La Fete Aux Copains", "Ca Va", "Chandernagor", and "La Fiancee Du Pirate". El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A really great collection of work that sets the scene for the London Underground of the 60s – that heady cultural scene that was about to burst forth and shower the world with a huge range of new music that would influence listeners for decades to come! This package isn't that music – in that most of the artists here are American, mixed with contributions from a few key Brit talents too – and the whole thing works together to showcase the sorts of sounds that were a bit inspiration on the generation that would then inspire many others to come – a mad mix of modern jazz, electronic music, avant classical, groovy vocal, and even some compelling beat/poetry recordings too – all packaged together in an overstuffed 3CD set that makes for a hell of a journey in music! Artists include Ornette Coleman, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Charles Mingus, Daphne Oram, Modern Jazz Quartet, Aldous Huxley, Cecil Taylor, John Cage, Eric Dolphy, Annie Ross, Sun Ra, Gyorgy Ligeti, Allen Ginsberg, Jimmy Smith, Luciano Berio, John Coltrane, Chico Hamilton, Alexis Korner, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Albert Ayler, Joe Harriott, and many others. ✨✧ Bob DoroughMultiplication Rock (colored vinyl pressing) (2019 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Capitol, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Sure, it was silly stuff when we were kids – but once De La Soul sampled "Three Is The Magic Number", this record became one of the most prized in our possession! And thanks to that hip hop reintroduction, we've really fallen in love with the music again over the years – partly because the tunes are all so groovy, and partly because we've really come to know the jazz-based work of composer Bob Dorough! At the time of this set, Dorough was coming off some great work in the 60s – his own rare recordings, music for Spanky & Our Gang, and others – all of which seems to inform these math-based tunes written for Saturday morning TV. The tunes are all pretty darn catchy, and often quite jazzy – and instrumentation often features some great electric piano nestled in alongside the vocals. Dorough sings the lion's share of the work for this album – although Grady Tate sings on two numbers, and Blossom Dearie on one more. Titles include the amazing "Three Is A Magic Number" – plus "Lucky Seven Sampson", "Little Twelve Toes", "Ready Or Not Here I Come", "I Got Six", "Naughty Number Nine", "Figure Eight", and "The Four Legged Zoo". Andy BeyShades Of Bey ... CD
Evidence, 1998. Used ... $4.99
A fantastic comeback moment for the great Andy Bey – a singer who did incredible work in the 60s and 70s – then disappeared from the recording scene for awhile! The set's a compelling batch of jazz vocal tracks that show Andy reinventing himself for a whole new generation of jazz listeners. The backing's by a nice small group that includes Gary Bartz on alto, with whom Andy recorded extensively in the 70s – and other players include Geri Allen on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums. The album includes a haunting reworking of Nick Drake's amazing song "River Man", plus a version of Dori Caymmi's "Like A Lover", Monk's "Straight No Chaser", and the moody "Dark Shadows", which was a page from Earl Coleman's songbook. Jaimeo BrownTranscendence – Work Songs ... CD
Motema, 2016. Used ... $6.99
Drummer Jaimeo Brown returns to the territory of his previous well-received Transcendence album – but shifts the sound slightly here – by mixing in inspiration from older work songs, instead of the gospel elements of the previous set – while creating music that's equally powerful overall! The album features older snippets of sound from Parchman Farm, mixed with some other recordings from Folkways – augmented by contemporary jazz performances by the group – in a way that fits with the mix of eras presented with the image on the cover. Some times are very strongly structured around the older work songs, others bring in new vocal performances, and electrify things a bit more – as Brown plays a bit of electronics, and the group also features Big Yuki and James Francies on keyboards, and Chris Sholar on guitar and more electronics. There's a few ultra-cool tracks that use older Japanese vocals – kind of a shift stylistically, but very compelling – and the rest of the group features JD Allen on tenor, Marcia Miget on flute, and Jaleel Shaw on alto. Titles include "Lazarus", "Mississippi", "Hidden Angel", "Safflower", "For Mama Lucy", "Paterson", "Stonemason", and "The Valley". CD

Adam Cooper & Nile Southern (editors)Chicago 1968 – The Whole World Is Watching (hardcover) ... Book
Hat & Beard, 2018. New Copy ... $34.99 60.00
A beautiful expansion of a famous moment in creative journalism – the famous 1968 issue of Esquire magazine that featured William S Burroughs, Terry Southern, Allen Ginsberg, Jean Genet, and Abbie Hoffman at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago! The results of that tumultuous event have been well-documented – but the special selection of correspondents was very unique – and was also documented heavily by photographer Michael Cooper. Cooper's shots appeared in the large special issue of the magazine in 1968 – but this book expands way past those shots, with dozens more taken at the time – showing the conflict in the street, the literary figures in action, and everything else that was happening at the time. The book includes expanded writings by Southern, too – and has a great balance of text and image, with 130 pages that mix black and white photos with writings. Book

House Of Orange/Bear Family (Germany), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 29.99
The lasting testament of the mighty Geater Davis – a really incredible southern singer with a deep soul sound that few others can match! Although Davis didn't record nearly as much as his contemporaries, he's got a sound that matches or beats them – a raw, raspy quality that's a bit like Bobby Blue Bland, touched with the depth of feeling we love in James Carr, peppered with elements of other Memphis singers – all produced to perfection with a sound that's as classic as anything on Stax or Goldwax. This album is the only full length set that Davis issued back in the day – released on the small label of producer Allen Orange, an overlooked genius in the southern studio scene of the 70s – with production in Little Rock and Birmingham – on titles that include his great 8 minute reading of "For Your Precious Love", plus "Wrapped Up In You", "My Love is So Strong for You", and "Don't Marry a Fool". Dave De Rose Music (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $11.99
Really compelling work from the farther reaches of the UK jazz scene – a series of "agile experiments" from drummer Dave DeRose – who works here with other musicians from the scene in a series of unbridled improvisations! The work was created with two guiding principles – the musicians could not discuss or plan their performance together in advance, and they would also play for a full hour, with no breaks at all! The idea grew out of a series of live performances, but then was captured by Dave in the studio – with results that are as varied as the musicians involved. Some selections are very unusual and almost abstract, others have a more familiar free jazz mode – and the ability of DeRose to shift in these spaces is one of the highlights of the set. The first volume includes performances with John Edwards on bass and Dan Nicholls on electronics; Rory Simmons on trumpet and electronics and George Crowley on saxes and effects; Dan Nicholls on electronics and Karl Vanden Bossche on percussion; Tom Challenger on saxes and Colin Somervell on bass; Sam Crowe on Rhodes and effects and Level Nevill Malcolm on bass; and Dario Rossetti Bonell on guitar and effects. Serge Gainsbourg & Jean Claude VannierLes Chemins De Katmandou ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A lost chapter in the legendary legacy of music from the team of Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier – the pair who created Serge's fantastic Melody Nelson album, and also did the funky soundtracks for the films Cannabis, La Horse, and Sex Shop! This set is every bit as groovy as those classics, but has been lost for years – because the master tapes were reportedly lost, and have only just recently been discovered – which makes the whole thing a 21st Century treasure from these two 60s maestros! The music is great – funky at times, jazzy at others – with elements that include tablas and sitar, funky bass, fuzzy guitar, heavy drums, and sweet clavinet – all used with that mindblowing melange that Vannier could cook up in the studio – so that even some of the familiar elements come out sounding very fresh and new. The film was also issued under the names Road To Kathmandu and The Pleasure Pit – and titles include "Opium Den", "Overdose", "Flower Child", "The Pleasure Pit", "Cache Cache", "Fallen Rainbow", and the tune "Colin Maillard" – a great funky number that's done in both vocal and instrumental versions. A 70s soul jazz classic – one of those albums we go back to again and again over the years for inspiration! The album was one of the first from young reed player Carlos Garnett – and it's virtually a super-session for the time – with a sublime lineup that perfectly blends spiritual jazz with funk and soul touches! The vibe here is incredible – far deeper than even on any of Garnett's other albums of the time – at a level that sounds as beautiful on the mellow cuts as it does on the soaring, spiritual soul jazz anthems that have made the record a classic for years. The record features vocals by Dee Dee Bridgewater and Ayodelle Jenkins – and instrumentation from Charles Sullivan on trumpet, Mauricio Smith on flute, Reggie Lucas on guitar, Norman Connors on drums, Mtume on congas, and Onaje Allen Gumbs on piano – plus Carlos himself on tenor, alto, and soprano sax. Titles include the perennial favorites "Mother of the Future" and "Taurus Woman", two cuts which transformed the global jazz dance scene years back – plus the tracks "Ebonesque", "Black Love", and "Banks of the Nile". A really beautiful little album from Jim Hall – a mid 70s gem that has him recasting his style with a wonderful sound! The album features Hall in a variety of groupings – some quite spare, and featuring only accompaniment from piano (Don Thompson or Tommy Flanagan), drums (Terry Clarke), or vocals (Jane Hall) – while a few other tracks feature Hall in a nice larger group with Flanagan on piano and Art Farmer on trumpet – playing in a warm, compressed sound that's incredibly beautiful. The tunes are all quite fresh – even on the few familiar numbers on the session – and the album's a work of subtle genius that shows why Hall was one of the greatest jazz talents on the guitar during his day! Now Again, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CDs ... $15.99 19.99
Never-issued work from underground Atlanta soul genius Richard Marks – an artist who never got much exposure back in the day, but who kept on producing and recording funky soul nuggets on his own! Marks' later years were covered in a previous set by the Now Again label – and this time around, they dig even deeper into his past – with a whole host of tracks that could have been the stuff of rare funky 45 dreams – had they ever gotten released as 7" singles! Marks clearly has a strong influence from James Brown and his band – and the main instrumentation on most of the combo cuts is guitar, which is used to really whomp down on the rhythms, and enforce the groove in the way that James might have done! There's also some cuts that show Richard hitting some more mellow 70s styles too – almost echoes of Bill Withers, especially when he uses acoustic guitar instead of electric – and there's a few occasional deep soul moments too. Titles include "Never Satisfied", "Crackerjack", "Challenge To A Pretty Woman", "Your Friends", "Trying To Survive", "I'm The Man For You", "It's Been Kinda Hard", "Love Is Gone", "Speak Now", "Simple Carefree Life", and "China Doll (extended)". 2CD set features 36 tracks in all – lots of bonus material! One of the most righteous soul jazz albums of the 70s – a unique session of poetry, percussion, and jazz – put together by the ultra-hip Positive Force! Not to be confused with the soul group of the same name, this combo was a spiritual jazz ensemble – featuring poet Ade Olatunji reciting some of his works, plus additional percussion, piano, bass, and keyboards. The tracks unfold with a simple, easy-going approach that's really beautiful – redemptive, hopeful, and free-thinking – with a great vision for the future, and a keen ear to challenge the status quo. Sun RaAntique Blacks ... LP
Art Yard/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Amazing work from Sun Ra – record that really features a great range of sounds and styles, and a heck of a lot of soul as well! Ra plays some especially nice rocksichord on the set – that freaky, fuzzy keyboard that comes off sounding like a guitar, even though it's played with keys – and there's some spiritual undercurrents to the set that are different than some of Ra's other albums with the instrument – some deeply feeling rhythms and soulful, spiritual expressions that really belie the Space Is The Place generation in which the album was cut. A few recitations imbue the record with a bold sense of poetry, which seems to be carried through strongly in the instrumentation too – especially on John Gilmore's tenor lines, which almost have a Shepp-like quality at points. Other players include Marshal Allen and Danny Davis on alto, Ahk Tal Ebah on trumpet, Clifford Jarvis on drums, and Sly on electric guitar – and titles include "Song No 1", "There Is Change In The Air", "Antique Blacks", "Would I For All That Place", "Ridiculous I & The Cosmos Me", and "This Song Is Dedicated To Nature's God". Saturn/Strut (UK), 1971. New Copy ... On November 13, 2020
An amazing live date from Sun Ra & The Arkestra – recorded in Cairo in 1971, with a very transcendent sound overall! Ra and the group are clearly inspired to be working in the shadow of the pyramids – and their music sometimes has Eastern overtones, a bit in the manner of Salah Ragab – their associate in Egypt – yet at other times, things get quite outside and noisy too! The keyboards are especially wonderful – as Ray plays "tiger organ" and moog, in addition to conventional piano – adding in the electronics with really spacey tones that really push the limits of the music. And some of the reeds really help shape the sound of the songs too – stark and soulful at key moments, but also forceful in formation at others – played by John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on flute and alto, Danny Thompson on baritone and flute, Kwame Hadi on trumpet, Danny Davis on flute and alto, Larry Northington on alto, Eloe Omoe on bass clarinet . The group comes together for a tight reading of "Space Is The Place" – and other titles include "3rd Planet", "Horizon", "Starwatchers", and "Shadow World". LP, Vinyl record album

Sun RaOf Abstract Dreams ... CD
Strut (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $13.99 15.98
A fantastic album from Sun Ra and the Arkestra – one that we'd rank right up there with our favorites on the Saturn Records label! The work here has never been issued, and it's extremely beautiful, too – pulled from a few just-discovered studio sessions done after the group was parting ways with Impulse Records, and mostly recording in a live environment! There's an intimacy to these studio tracks that's a nice difference from some of the more freewheeling live work of the period – moments that almost hearken back to the exotic jazz of the earliest Saturn years of the group, mixed with some other currents that seem to point the way towards the excellent Horo Records material to come – especially in the way Ra is phrasing things on his piano. Most groups are relatively small, and titles include the lovely "Island In The Sun" with Marshall Allen on some great flute; a studio take on "Unmask The Batman", better known from live sets, and a playful tune that hints at the group's work on the Dan & Dale Batman album in the 60s; a spiritual stormer "I'll Wait For You", with great piano from Ra and an excellent tenor solo from John Gilmore; and a take on "New Dawn" with work by Marshall Allen on alto, Elo Umoe on bass clarinet, and Danny Ray Thompson on baritone. The set has that Ellingtonish flourish that crept into much of Ra's work after the mid 80s – handled with an edge that still keeps the sound all his own, but which shows an increasing preoccupation for straighter jazz expression, and well crafted large group arrangements – peppered with a few numbers that are more in the older space-spirit of the group. During the early 70s, Mongo Santamaria moved to Atlantic records – which was a perfect place for him to expand his groove past the hard Latin soul of his Columbia years, into an excellent sound that mixed funk and Latin and soul and jazz! On these two albums, Mongo is still working with his classic arranger – trumpeter Marty Sheller, the man who knew how to pack an incredible amount of power in one tiny groove! Neal Creque joined Mongo on loan from Pucho's group – and he also contributed a lot of nice tracks to the first album, like his classic "Windjammer", plus "Look Away", "The Whistler", and "Mo' Do". Other players are equally nice – and include Roger Glenn, Armando Peraza, Angel Allende, and Sonny Henry. Undisputed TruthCosmic Truth/Higher Than High ... CD
Gordy/Kent (UK), 1975. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 24.98
A pair of late Motown albums from Undisputed Truth – both issued here back to back, as they originally appeared for the label! First up is Cosmic Truth – a fantastic 70s album from Undisputed Truth – and the first to fully feature the new version of the lineup, after the Magictones had been recruited to form the second version of the group! The sound here is even funkier and more guitar-based than before – a fully-realized take on the Norman Whitfield modes that had been brewing up since his late 60s work with The Temptations – almost as tripped-out at times as early 70s Funkadelic – as if Undisputed Truth were being put forth as a Detroit challenge to the George Clinton universe! Production and arrangements are great – very far-reaching at times, with some bigger ideas in the mix – although all the tight funky soul elements that always made these guys so great. Titles include "1990", "Squeeze Me Tease Me", "Earthquake Snake", "Spaced Out", "Lil Red Ridin Hood", "Got To Get Me Some Lovin", and the great cut "UFO's". Higher Than High is a great later Motown effort from the Undisputed Truth – working in a groove that's a bit tighter and more upbeat than before, but still plenty darn great! Norman Whitfield is still very firmly in charge of the group's sound on the record – arranging, producing, and writing most of the cuts on the album – and he's doing a great job of keeping his sound fresh here – not just sticking in the bass-heavy styles of previous years, and instead moving into some fresher territory that has the group continuing to grow nicely. In a way, the whole thing's almost a precursor for the grooves to come on Norman's own Whitfield label – a great batch of well-crafted titles that include "Overload", "Higher Than High", "Poontang", "I Saw YOu When You Met Her", "Help Yourself (second version)", "I'm In The Red Zone", "Boogie Bump Boogie", and "Ma". Little David, 1976. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really brilliant little record from Nat Adderley – one that shows him shaking off the groove gotten from brother Cannonball, and finding some great space all on his own! The setting here is tight and funky – at a level that's a bit more arranged than a small combo soul jazz session, but which still has plenty of sharp edges and bold notes! The groove's a bit like Kudu Records from the time, but less electric overall – and Nat's cornet is featured in a hip combo with John Stubblefield on reeds, Onaje Allen Gumbs on piano and keyboards, and Buddy Williams on drums. There's plenty of great funky riffing in the set, but also some wonderfully laidback grooves that really sparkle with electric piano from Gumbs – and titles include a surprisingly wonderful version of "MASH", plus "Hummin", "Midnight Over Memphis", "The Traveler", "Listen To The Rain", and the Latin-tinged "Amor Sonador". At a time when the group had already conquered the world of the punk rock single – they completely knock it out of the park with a full length set like this – really burning on all cylinders with loads of tight, sharp, hook-heavy tracks – then getting even more inventive and expressive with their guitars, at a level that feels like it's setting the scene for all the UK fuzz to come in the next decade! Titles include their classic "Ever Fallen In Love" – plus "Real World", "Sixteen Again", "ESP", "Walking Distance", Love Is Lies", "Nostalgia", "Late For The Train", "Operators Manual", and "Nothing Left". Pacific Jazz/Capitol, 1954. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the rarest albums on the Pacific Jazz label from the 50s – featuring a side apiece of trio material by pianists Russ Freeman and Richard (aka Dick) Twardzik. Both players were known as accompanists of Chet Baker during his sublime mid 50s run at Pacific Jazz – and although Freeman is well-remembered today as the strong player he always was, Twardzik has quickly fallen into obscurity, due to a young death in the mid 50s – and this album features some of the few tracks he recorded as a leader on his own. Freeman plays with Joe Mondragon on bass and Shelly Manne on drums, and Twardzik plays with Carson Smith and Peter Littman – and titles include "Yellow Tango", "Round Midnight", "Abuquerque Social Swim", "Backfield In Motion", "Bock's Tops", and "Yesterday's Gardenias". Blue Thumb, 1973. Very Good Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The fantastic debut of The Pointer Sisters – an album that's a lot deeper than most of their crossover pop from years to come! At the time of the album's release, the trio were a badass group of female singers on the Bay Area scene – out to redefine the role of the girl group in soul – working not only with righteous power that was a real change from modes of the 60s – but also this trans-temporal quality that had them reaching back with ease for references from decades past, which also includes a surprising amount of jazz! The highlight here is the group's classic funky break version of Allen Toussaint's "Yes We Can Can" – and other titles include "Naked Food", "Wang Dang Doodle", "Sugar", "Pains & Tears", "Jada", "River Boulevard", and "Cloudburst". Buda (France), 1977. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best-remembered Sun Ra albums from the 70s – a really cool little session that features Ra playing the unusual "rocksichord" all the way through! The instrument's a very weird one – kind of like a messed-up electric piano, with lots of cool broken notes and a weird fuzzed-out tone – one that almost feels like a guitar's being fitted into a keyboard, with almost psychedelic results! Ra's use of the rocksichord gives the album a really eerie, outer spacey sound – one that mixes strongly with more familiar jazz lines from John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and flute, Danny Thompson on baritone, and Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet. Titles include "The Mystery Of Two", "Interstellar Low Ways", "Cosmos", "Moonship Journey", "Neo-Project #2", and "Jazz From An Unknown Planet". CD

A classic Arkestra live set from the end of the 80s – beautifully recorded, and put together with a lot more dynamic energy than some of the less professional Sun Ra live dates from the time! The set runs for nearly an hour in length, and tracks are long, but often quite focused – served up with a good deal of soulfulness in both the rhythms and horn work, as well as some of that Ellington-inspired tightness that marked Ra's best later years. Players include Michael Ray, John Gilmore, Tyrone Hill, Marshall Allen, John Gilmore, and Ahmed Abdullah – and titles include "Astro Black", "If You Came From Nowhere Here", "Can You Take It", "Angel Race/I Will Wait For You", "Cosmo Approach Prelude", and "Interstellar Lo-Ways". An excellent set of some fairly out material – performed by Shorter with a group that includes Freddie Hubbard, Grachan Moncur, James Spaulding, Herbie Hancock, and a rare appearance by his brother Alan on flugelhorn! At times, the record builds into a sound that's freer and more challenging than on some of Shorter's other albums from the time – but it does so in more of the "new thing" mode that you'd hear on records from the time by Jackie McLean or Moncur, with an overall sense of purpose that really keeps the message clear. Features all original compositions by the Shorter brothers – and cuts include "Chaos", "Face Of The Deep", "Mephistopheles", and "Genesis". CD

Rare material from the great Lennie Tristano – a host of tracks that sit perfectly with his two landmark albums for Atlantic Records – and which maybe even push the envelope a bit more as well! The material is all from the 50s and early 60s – and is pulled together here in an excellent album that originally appeared on the Japanese market, then got wider circulation – really helping fill in the picture of Tristano's talents, which were often sadly under-represented on record. Highlights include a beautiful solo piece based on an Edgar Allen Poe story – "Descent Into The Maelstrom" – plus the lovely "Dram Paris 1965" and "Image Paris 1965" – plus three more tracks from a 1961 rehearsal, and trio titles with either Sonny Dallas or Peter Ind on bass, and Roy Haynes or Nick Stabulas on drums. Hard talk, and lots of heavy sounds from the great Mal Waldron – heard here in a set that may well be one of his greatest moments of the 70s! The album's a key illustration of Waldron's power on the European scene of the time – and it's noteworthy not just for Mal's bold vision as a leader, but also for key contributions from Steve Lacy on soprano sax and Manfred Schoof on trumpet! Both artists really bring a lot to Waldron's music – filling up the long tracks with voices that are as powerful and righteous as the leader's own – spurred on by some great rhythm work from Isla Eckinger on bass and Allen Blairman on drums. Ebalunga (Austria), 1950s/1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at the untapped musical legacy of Eden Ahbez – the west coast mystic who's best remembered for delivering the song "Nature Boy" to Nat King Cole (legendarily walking in barefooted during a recording session!) – but who also made a range of other great music in the years that followed! Apart from "Nature Boy", and Ahbez's rare Eden's Island album from 1960, most of his other songs have fallen in in the shifting sands of time – but this record does a great job of digging up the best of the bunch, and presents them in a well-documented package that's much better than some of the public domain Eden Ahbez records that have hit the market. Song songs are by Eden, in a range of exotic vocal modes – others are by contemporaries, some in collaboration with Ahbez, some working on their own – and there's a great rante of trcks that icnlude "The Clam Man", "Umgowah", "India", "Child Of Nature", "Anna Was Mine (demo)", "Overcomers Of The World", and "Monterey" by Eden Ahbez – plus "Surfer John" by Nature Boy & Friends, "Wild Boy" by Mort Wise & The Wisemen, "Eden's Island" by Arthur Lyman, "Land Of Love" by Nat King Cole, "Hey Jacque" by Eartha Kitt, and "Palm Springs" by Ray Anthony. We've always wondered why Carter's wonderful avant collaborations with Bobby Bradford were so under-documented for so long, as to our ears they were making clearly the leading lights of the LA new scene. Finally, by the 80s, more recordings seemed to be offered up to them, like this one. Carter was originally commissioned by the New York Shakespeare Festival's "New Jazz at the Public" series to do these pieces. Carter's inspiration for this record was the history of the use of castles on the coast of Ghana during the slave trade in the 16th century. Titles include "Castles Of Ghana", "Evening Prayer", "The Fallen Prince", "Capture", and "Theme Of Desperation". Ibedon/No Business (Lithuania), 1977. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A real lost chapter of 70s genius from reedman John Carter – a set done after his better-known recordings with Bobby Bradford, in a style that's much more spacious overall! The material features a trio – with Carter on both soprano sax and clarinet, both instruments he plays with an incredible dexterity and sensitivity in sound – much looser and more open to sudden shifts of inspiration than his music with Bradford – with accompaniment from Stanley Carter on bass and William Jeffrey on drums and percussion! The style is free, but never indulgently so – and Carter finds this way to always reach for melodic moments even at his most intense – creating the kind of magic that few other musicians might with his instruments. Titles include "Echoes From Rudolph's", "To A Fallen Poppy", "The Last Sunday", "Armin", and "Angles". 2CD set adds in a whole disc of extra material from the trio – with a 19 minute "Echoes From Rudolphs/To A Fallen Poppy", and a very long stretch of different improvised passages! Ogun (UK), 1978/1995. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful double-length package of work from drummer Louis Moholo – a 2CD set that features one record from recent years, and a key classic from the 70s! Spirits Rejoice is one of the strongest 70s statements from ex-Blue Notes drummer Moholo – recorded in the company of fellow expatriots and UK avant jazzers that include Johnny Dyani, Evan Parker, Kenny Wheeler, Nick Evans, Radu Malfatti, and Harry Miller. The album shifts easily between strongly rhythmic passages that show Moholo's roots in the South African jazz scene, and other, freer sections that also illustrate his importance in the European avant scene of the 70s – and overall, the record's got a beautifully soulful quality that guides it well through all of these moments. Titles include "Wedding Hymn", "Khanya Apho Ukhona", "Ithi Gqi", "Amaxesha Osizi", and "You Ain't Gonna Know Me". That record is followed here by 1995's Bra Louis Bra Tebs – a session with a similar style, especially in its use of African-inspired rhythms – but one that also features a different lineup, and some great use of vocals! Francine Luce sings on a number of the album's best tracks – in a style that's almost an avant-tuned approach to vocalese, and which seems to carry echoes of Norma Winstone – a voice that's dreamy one minute, challenging the next – and often used as a key instrument in the combo's lineup of tenor, alto, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums. Titles include "Utshaka", "Maybe Of Cause", "Moegoe", "Sonke", and "Lakutshona Ilanga". CD

One of the most tape-centric entries in this great Lost Reel series – given that the recordings here were pulled from a San Francisco rehearsal by Ra & The Arkestra – and still contain some evidence of the recorder turning on and off! But despite that technical element – which actually creates a nice little window into the way the band worked away from the stage, and focused on certain elements on their own – the music here is still plenty darn great, and offers up a rare glimpse of the group during a short SF residence. The tracks include a few "unidentified titles" – which, according to the notes, are numbers that possibly haven't appeared on other recordings – and players include Ra, John Gilmore, Marshall Allen, Danny Ray Thompson, and James Jackson. 2CD set features titles that include "Dance Of The Living Image", "Sometimes I'm Happy", "Astro Nation", "Hard Hearted Hannah", "Passin Gas", "Sophisticated Lady", "Watusi", and a few of those unidentified titles! A really cool set that looks at the rise of late 50s beatnik culture from a variety of different styles – not just the jazz and poetry that marked that scene's biggest contribution to music – but also the wealth of modes that inspired those years too! The 3CD package features a stunning 57 titles in all – and begins in the late 30s with hard-edged small combo work and jive-heavy vocal tracks – then runs past WWII to include some bebop, R&B, and very cool vocal numbers – before moving into Greenwich Village classic sounds in a mix of spoken word, jazz poetry, and even a bit of folk! A storming mix of R&B, early soul, and rare rockers – all hand-picked by the famous team of Keb Darge and Little Edith! Coney Island is a hell of a place – a refuge for New Yorkers for over 100 years, and still pretty amazing today – with a surprisingly strong legacy that also includes the park's influence on more serious artists over the decades, a legacy that's presented beautifully in this oversize book! The volume's not a glossy presentation of the tourist mecca – but instead a very well-done, well-researched art book – featuring paintings, photographs, film stills, and other images that show the way that Coney Island figured in the larger high art community in and around New York – representations by folks as diverse as Weegee, Woody Allen, Robert Mapplethorpe, Bruce Davidson, Reginald Marsh, and dozens of others. The large book is a monograph for a museum exhibit, but clearly goes far beyond the event – and also features text by Charles Musser, Robin Jaffee Frank, Josh Glick, and others. 286 heavy hardcover pages – with color and black and white images throughout! Birthright/High Jazz (Switzerland), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Stunning sounds from Michael Orr – a singer you might know from his secular work in the duo of Harris & Orr – and who still sounds incredible here in a more spiritual-styled set from the start of the 80s! As with Michael's earlier music, there's a cool, cosmic vibe going on in the instrumentation – jazzy keyboard inflections and a great spacey soul conception that's quite unusual for most records of this vintage, much less the gospel setting that Orr's working in here on the Birthright label! Yet as with the hippest gospel records of the time, the religion is delivered more in a sense of universal spirit – at a level that's more on par with some of the more spiritual jazz and soul releases of the time – a mode that Orr worked in before on his previous albums. Michael plays a fair bit of Fender Rhodes on the record, and sings deeply too – and the vibe here is a lot like the best modern soul moments from Rance Allen and DJ Rogers. Soaring sounds from SBB – an all-instrumental session for Polish Radio, and one that really shows off the more fusion-heavy side of their music! All tracks are nice and long – and there's more of a power trio formation in the group – really freewheeling guitar lines that are certainly inspired by the roots of hard rock, but which get much more open, solo-based expression here – anext to some super-heavy bass and drums! There's a bit of keyboards, too – although used in ways that echo the guitar more than usual for the group – maybe prefacing the way that Geddy Lee's keys might challenge the guitar of Alex Lifeson in years to come. An incredible record by Lenny Tristano – one that features him playing solo piano, but in a way that's so inventive, so creative, so pyrotechnic, that Atlantic Records had to include text on the back cover saying "No use is made of multi-tracking, over-dubbing, or tape-speeding" – just to prove that the whole thing was simply a product of Tristano's legendary prowess on the piano! The album's also one of the last (the last?) that Lennie ever cut – and although many other players are kind of faltering in last sessions like this, Lennie's sounding better than ever – ready to take on a realm of new challenges in the 60s. Inevitable/Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A great little package that finally gives the Liverpool scene its due – especially during a time when many other English cities are credited with helping to shape the sound of modern music! Late 70s Liverpool had little going on since the Beatles and Brit Invasion groups – but the rise of Inevitable Records gave the city a great voice to challenge the other punk and post-punk material of the time – and stood as an important stepping stone for a number of acts who went on to much bigger labels during the 80s! This package brings together all the a- and b-sides of Inevitable, along with replicas of all their cool 45rpm sleeves – important, as the label mostly just issued 7" singles – but with a force that has become legendary over the years. The package features 2CDs that bring together these singles, by groups who include Wah Heat, Dead Or Alive, Modern Eon, Nightmares On Wax, China Crisis, It's Immaterial, Faction, Freeze Frame, The Light, Builders, Box Of Toys, and Venus Adore – plus a full extra CD of Peel Session material from the early 80s by some of the biggest groups in the set! One of the coolest, funkiest records we've ever heard from Dr John – thanks to lots of guest help from The Meters! The vibe here is a bit tighter than some of Mac's previous records – not as trippy as his first few for Atco – but the sound is still nice and sharp, and Allen Toussaint provides production and arrangements with a style that would be right at home on some of his work for the indie Sansu label. Damn great work from Ledisi – an artist who hasn't missed a beat since moving to the majors a few years back – sounding almost funkier than ever before, thanks to some impeccable production and razor-sharp instrumentation! Ledisi's vocals are beyond challenge – old school deep soul we first came to love years back, on her classic indie sets – and this time around, the instrumentation seems even rawer than we remember – as if there's an old school funky combo backing the singer up on some tracks, mixed with other numbers that have some fuller backings, but still really retain their edge. Production is by a crew with some really great ears for this sort of sound – Rex Rideout, Raphael Saadiq, and others – and from the songwriting credits, it's clear that Ledisi's still very much in charge of the overall shape of the album. We've loved Carmen Lundy since the very first time we heard her voice – and that love has only continued to grow over the decades, as she's given us a tremendous run of great records and wonderful music! This time around, Lundy's still strongly in the jazz side of the spectrum, but also brings in a bit of the soul music promised in the title – working in sharp focus on a set of well-penned original tunes that really open up her vocals – most of which feature the legendary Patrice Rushen on keyboards, too! There's an understated brilliance here that really lives up to Lundy's legacy – a way of putting over a tune without every overdoing it – a lesson that's been learned in jazz, but which also has a great impact here in a slightly different setting. Other players on the record include Warren Wolf on vibes, Geri Allen on Fender Rhodes and piano, Darryl Hyall on bass, and Bennie Maupin on soprano sax – and titles include "Grace", "Kindred Spirits", "Life Is A Song In Me", "Soul To Soul", "When Will They Learn", and "Grateful (parts 1 & 2)".
